Abstract

In recent neutrino detectors, neutrons produced in neutrino reactions play an important role. Muon capture on oxygen nuclei is one of the processes that produce neutrons in water Cherenkov detectors. We measured neutron multiplicity in the process using cosmic ray muons that stop in the gadolinium-loaded Super-Kamiokande detector. For this measurement, neutron detection efficiency is obtained with the muon capture events followed by gamma rays to be $50.2^{+2.0}_{-2.1}\%$. By fitting the observed multiplicity considering the detection efficiency, we measure neutron multiplicity in muon capture as $P(0)=24\pm3\%$, $P(1)=70^{+3}_{-2}\%$, $P(2)=6.1\pm0.5\%$, $P(3)=0.38\pm0.09\%$. This is the first measurement of the multiplicity of neutrons associated with muon capture without neutron energy threshold.

Abstract

A search for proton decay into $e^+/\mu^+$ and a $\eta$ meson has been performed using data from a 0.373 Mton$\cdot$year exposure (6050.3 live days) of Super-Kamiokande. Compared to previous searches this work introduces an improved model of the intranuclear $\eta$ interaction cross section, resulting in a factor of two reduction in uncertainties from this source and $\sim$10\% increase in signal efficiency. No significant data excess was found above the expected number of atmospheric neutrino background events resulting in no indication of proton decay into either mode. Lower limits on the proton partial lifetime of $1.4\times\mathrm{10^{34}~years}$ for $p\rightarrow e^+\eta$ and $7.3\times\mathrm{10^{33}~years}$ for $p\rightarrow \mu^+\eta$ at the 90$\%$ C.L. were set. These limits are around 1.5 times longer than our previous study and are the most stringent to date.

Abstract

The Super-Kamiokande and T2K collaborations present a joint measurement of neutrino oscillation parameters from their atmospheric and beam neutrino data. It uses a common interaction model for events overlapping in neutrino energy and correlated detector systematic uncertainties between the two datasets, which are found to be compatible. Using 3244.4 days of atmospheric data and a beam exposure of $19.7(16.3) \times 10^{20}$ protons on target in (anti)neutrino mode, the analysis finds a 1.9$\sigma$ exclusion of CP-conservation (defined as $J_{CP}=0$) and a preference for the normal mass ordering., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

We present the results of the charge ratio ($R$) and polarization ($P^{\mu}_{0}$) measurements using the decay electron events collected from 2008 September to 2022 June by the Super-Kamiokande detector. Because of its underground location and long operation, we performed high precision measurements by accumulating cosmic-ray muons. We measured the muon charge ratio to be $R=1.32 \pm 0.02$ $(\mathrm{stat.}{+}\mathrm{syst.})$ at $E_{\mu}\cos \theta_{\mathrm{Zenith}}=0.7^{+0.3}_{-0.2}$ $\mathrm{TeV}$, where $E_{\mu}$ is the muon energy and $\theta_{\mathrm{Zenith}}$ is the zenith angle of incoming cosmic-ray muons. This result is consistent with the Honda flux model while this suggests a tension with the $\pi K$ model of $1.9\sigma$. We also measured the muon polarization at the production location to be $P^{\mu}_{0}=0.52 \pm 0.02$ $(\mathrm{stat.}{+}\mathrm{syst.})$ at the muon momentum of $0.9^{+0.6}_{-0.1}$ $\mathrm{TeV}/c$ at the surface of the mountain; this also suggests a tension with the Honda flux model of $1.5\sigma$. This is the most precise measurement ever to experimentally determine the cosmic-ray muon polarization near $1~\mathrm{TeV}/c$. Abstract

The first loading of gadolinium (Gd) into Super-Kamiokande in 2020 was successful, and the neutron capture efficiency on Gd reached 50\%. To further increase the Gd neutron capture efficiency to 75\%, 26.1 tons of $\rm Gd_2(\rm SO_4)_3\cdot \rm 8H_2O$ was additionally loaded into Super-Kamiokande (SK) from May 31 to July 4, 2022. As the amount of loaded $\rm Gd_2(\rm SO_4)_3\cdot \rm 8H_2O$ was doubled compared to the first loading, the capacity of the powder dissolving system was doubled. We also developed new batches of gadolinium sulfate with even further reduced radioactive impurities. In addition, a more efficient screening method was devised and implemented to evaluate these new batches of $\rm Gd_2(\rm SO_4)_3\cdot \rm 8H_2O$. Following the second loading, the Gd concentration in SK was measured to be $333.5\pm2.5$ ppm via an Atomic Absorption Spectrometer (AAS). From the mean neutron capture time constant of neutrons from an Am/Be calibration source, the Gd concentration was independently measured to be 332.7 $\pm$ 6.8(sys.) $\pm$ 1.1(stat.) ppm, consistent with the AAS result. Furthermore, during the loading the Gd concentration was monitored continually using the capture time constant of each spallation neutron produced by cosmic-ray muons,and the final neutron capture efficiency was shown to become 1.5 times higher than that of the first loaded phase, as expected., Comment: 34 pages, 13 figures, submitted to Nuclear Inst. and Methods in Physics Research, A

Abstract

We have developed a photon detection system for muonic X-ray spectroscopy. The detector system consists of high-purity germanium detectors with BGO Compton suppressors. The signals from the detectors are readout with a digital acquisition system. The absolute energy accuracy, energy and timing resolutions, photo-peak efficiency, the performance of the Compton suppressor, and high count rate durability are studied with standard $\gamma$-ray sources and in-beam experiment using $^{27}\mathrm{Al}(p, \gamma){}^{28}\mathrm{Si}$ resonance reaction. The detection system was demonstrated at Paul Scherrer Institute. A calibration method for a photon detector at a muon facility using muonic X-rays of $^{197}$Au and $^{209}$Bi is proposed.

Type I allergic reactions to MSG have not previously been reported. Our patient, a 21-year-old woman, was 14 years old when she first noticed swelling of her tongue (but no oral itching, diarrhea, or abdominal pain) after eating various snack foods. Current skin prick testing elicited a weak positive reaction to MSG. We then performed an oral challenge test during which our patient ingested potato snacks. Subsequent histology showed telangiectasia of the buccal mucosa, interstitial edema in the subepithelial submucosa, and mast cell infiltration. Oral mucosal challenge tests using sodium glutamate confirmed oral swelling in this patient. This report is the first to confirm a case of type 1 allergy to MSG by combining pathology findings with the results of challenge testing.Keywords: food additive, mast cell, monosodium glutamate, food allergy

Infection with the Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is a rare cause of liver injury, and the behavior of HEV in patients with PD is unclear. Since patients undergoing dialysis are frequently polypharmatic, liver injury caused by HEV infection may be misdiagnosed as drug-induced liver injury.Case Presentation: A 61-year-old woman with PD developed abrupt elevation of blood transaminase levels on a routine outpatient session. Since the patient has been receiving tolvaptan as the only new medication, we suspected tolvaptan induced liver injury. In further investigating the cause of liver injury, the blood screening test was found to be positive for HEV-IgA. The patient was diagnosed with HEV infection, and had a self-limited course.Conclusion: When encountered with patients developing liver injury during PD, HEV infection should be included in the differential diagnosis.Keywords: peritoneal dialysis, hepatitis E virus, HEV infection, liver injury

Physical activity was assessed using a 3-axis accelerometer. Dyspnea upon exertion was investigated using a 3-minute step test.Results: The Japanese version of the MDP was obtained and validated linguistically. Air-hunger was significantly associated with total calories from walking (r = − 0.47, p < 0.05), while anxiety and depression were significantly correlated with both the amount and intensity of physical activity (r = − 0.49, p < 0.05, and r = − 0.46, p < 0.05, respectively).Conclusion: The Japanese version of the MDP was suggested to reflect both pulmonary functions, ventilatory response during exercise, and intensity and amount of physical activity in patients with COPD.Keywords: dyspnea, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, multidimension, physical activity

Abstract

A comprehensive study of the organic chemistry and mineralogy of an ultracarbonaceous micrometeorite (UCAMM D05IB80) collected from near the Dome Fuji Station, Antarctica, was carried out to understand the genetic relationship among organic materials, silicates, and water. The micrometeorite is composed of a dense aggregate of ∼5 µm-sized hollow ellipsoidal organic material containing submicrometer-sized phases such as glass with embedded metal and sulfides (GEMS) and mineral grains. There is a wide area of organic material (∼15 × 15 μm) in its interior. Low-Ca pyroxene is much more abundant than olivine and shows various Mg/(Mg + Fe) ratios ranging from ∼1.0 to 0.78, which is common to previous works on UCAMMs. By contrast, GEMS grains in this UCAMM have unusual chemical compositions. They are depleted in both Mg and S, which suggests that these elements were leached out from the GEMS grains during very weak aqueous alteration, without the formation of phyllosilicates. The organic materials have two textures—smooth and globular with an irregular outline—and these are composed of imine, nitrile and/or aromatic nitrogen heterocycles, and amide. The ratio of nitrogen to carbon (N/C) in the smooth region of the organics is ∼0.15, which is five times higher than that of insoluble organic macromolecules in types 1 and 2 carbonaceous chondritic meteorites. In addition, the UCAMM organic materials are soluble in epoxy and are thus hydrophilic; this polar nature indicates that they are very primitive. The surface of the material is coated with an inorganic layer, a few nanometers thick, that consists of C, O, Si, S, and Fe. Sulfur is also contained in the interior, implying the presence of organosulfur moieties. There are no isotopic anomalies of D, 13C, or 15N in the organic material. Interstellar photochemistry alone would not be sufficient to explain the N/C ratio of the UCAMM organics; therefore, we suggest that a very small amount of fluid on a comet must have been necessary for the formation of the UCAMM. The GEMS grains depleted in Mg and S in the UCAMM prove a very weak degree of aqueous alteration; weaker than that of carbonaceous chondrites. Short-duration weak alteration probably caused by planetesimal shock locally melted cometary ice grains and released water that dissolved the organics; the fluid would likely have not mobilized because of the very low thermal conductivity of the porous icy body. This event allowed the formation of the large organic puddle of the UCAMM, as well as organic matter sulfurization, formation of thin membrane-like layers of minerals, and deformation of organic nanoglobules.

Although the association between lower limb ulcer and peritonitis in patients undergoing PD is unclear, based on our clinical experience and the clinical importance of the complications in patients undergoing PD, we hypothesized that lower limb ulcer is associated with peritonitis in patients on PD.Patients and Methods: In this single center, retrospective cohort study, we studied 87 patients who started undergoing PD at our hospital from April 2015 to March 2020. We compared these 8 patients with lower limb ulcer with the other 79 patients without lower limb ulcer. We compared between the patients in the objection period of this study about peritonitis using Log rank test, and used the unpaired t-test and Fisher’s exact test to compare the clinical factors between the two groups. Moreover, we used univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses to study the association of PD-related peritonitis with the clinical factors.Results: The period developed first peritonitis of the patients on PD with lower limb ulcer was significant shorter than those without lower limb ulcer in Log rank test (P = 0.011). The Fisher’s exact test and unpaired t-test showed that the difference in the prevalence of PD-related peritonitis (P = 0.009), peritonitis/patient years (P = 0.036), the BMI (P = 0.007) and icodextrin (P = 0.001) were significant. Lower limb ulcer had significant associations with peritonitis in patients on PD in both univariate [odds ratio (OR) 8.461, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.854– 45.60, P = 0.006] and multivariate [OR 7.169, 95% CI 1.519– 39.480, P = 0.013] logistic regression analysis.Conclusion: In conclusion, lower limb ulcer may be associated with peritonitis in patients undergoing PD. The article discusses a case study of an 80-year-old Japanese woman with rheumatoid arthritis who tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 and experienced prolonged shedding of the virus while on methotrexate (MTX) treatment. The patient's antigen levels fluctuated, and the virus isolated was identified as Omicron BA-5. The study suggests that MTX treatment may have delayed the clearance of SARS-CoV-2, emphasizing the need for clinicians to carefully balance the risks and benefits of DMARD therapy in infected patients. The patients with NS due to minimal change disease (MCD) are often difficult to control effective circulating plasma volume, causes acute kidney injury (AKI), and when diuretics are not effective and the respiratory condition of patients worsens, patients require acute renal replacement therapy (ARRT). The effectiveness of LDL-A is not only reduction of serum low-density lipoprotein but also various other benefits. LDL-A might have improved renal hemodynamics by reducing vasoconstrictive eicosanoids and contributed to the therapeutic effect of antiproteinuric drugs such as corticosteroids. We treated a 49-year-old Japanese woman and a 71-year-old Japanese man with AKI caused by NS due to MCD, who required ARRT. Although these patients received ARRT and corticosteroids, their AKI and MCD did not improve sufficiently. We initiated LDL-A treatment for these patients as an additional treatment modality, because their total serum cholesterol levels were high at the time of admission. After the additional LDL-A treatment, both patients were able to discontinue ARRT, because NS and AKI in both patients were improved sufficiently. It is possible that early additional LDL-A is effective for patients with AKI and NS due to MCD who require ARRT, and may help patients discontinue ARRT because of the effect of LDL-A such as improving hypercoagulability and renal hemodynamics and contributing to the therapeutic effect of corticosteroids.Keywords: low-density lipoprotein apheresis, minimal change disease, nephrotic syndrome, acute kidney injury, acute renal replacement therapy

Abstract

The X-ray energy spectra and Normalized Power Spectral Densities (NPSDs) of an X-ray nova, GS 2000+25, were investigated. The X-ray energy spectra of the source consist of two components: a hard component, which can be represented by a power-law, and an ultra-soft component, represented by radiation from an optically-thick accretion disk (the disk component). In a model in which the power-law component is the Compton-scattered radiation, it is found that the temperature of the incident blackbody radiation to the Compton cloud decrease from 0.8 keV to 0.2 keV according to the decay of the intensity, which coincides with that of the inner accretion disk. When the source changed from the high-state to the low-state, both the photon index of the power-law component (or Compton y-parameter) and the NPSD of the hard component dramatically changed as did GS 1124-683. That is, the photon index changed from 2.2--2.6 to 1.7--1.8 and the absolute values of the NPSDs at 0.3 Hz of the hard component in the low-state became about 10-times larger than those of the hard component in the high-state.
