We investigated the performance of a flight model of the position-sensitive tissue-equivalent proportional chamber (PS-TEPC) by irradiating with heavy-ion beams prior to launch to the International Space Station. The flight model operated stably with an effective gas gain of 1000 under a sealed gas. This gain was almost consistent with the effective gas gain under a gas flow. Energies of H, C, Si and Fe beams measured using the PS-TEPC flight model agreed well with calculations using the SRIM2008 code. Energy resolutions of 9.7% and 3.8% were obtained for the C and Fe beams, respectively. The uncertainties in dose equivalents were estimated to be better than 30% assuming both the theoretical model and best-fit function of linear energy transfer and referring to previously reported integrated dose fractions for an actual spacecraft. These features of the flight model satisfy the National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements criteria for space dosimeters.

Beam tests were performed for a Micro Pixel Chamber (m-PIC) with a detection volume of 10 x 10 x 10 cm3 to investigate the response to heavy ions. The three dimensional tracks of carbon, silicon, and iron beams were successfully observed and their track lengths were measured. Additionally, Linear Energy Transfer (LET) distributions of each ion were obtained, and the mean LET values were consistent with the theoretical calculation of mass stopping power within an error of ~10%. This detector is a candidate for an ideal dosimeter in space.

We started to develop a new space dosimeter named 'Position Sensitive Tissue Equivalent Proportional Counter (PS-TEPC)' with tissue equivalency and position sensitivity. This detector consists of the Micro Pixel Chamber (micro-PIC) which is a kind of the micro-pattern gas detector. The scintillating fiber camera is a type of three-dimensional track detector. Using this camera, we can observe the scintillation track produced along the path of a charged particle, and from its scintillation yield can determine the linear energy transfer (LET) distribution of the charged particle. Such observations are also possible for recoil (charged) particles produced by fast neutrons. From these data, we can estimate the LET distribution of individual charged particles or that of recoil particles produced by neutrons; and finally, we can estimate the dose equivalent due to charged particles and/or fast neutrons. For use as a dosimeter for fast neutrons produced by the interaction between cosmic-ray particles and wall materials of a manned spaceship in space, a 52 mm cubic scintillating fiber camera with a 75 mm diameter gated-image intensifier with a maximum counting rate of 30 Hz was constructed. The dosimeter consists of a stack of scintillation fibers with a sensitive volume of 52 mm x 52 mm x 52 mm and a 75 mm diameter image intensifier for readout from the scintillation fibers. The scintillation yields were measured for high-energy heavy ions such as carbon and argon ions. An energy resolution of 12 percent full-width half-maximum (FWHM) was obtained for penetrated argon ions of 650 MeV/n. The space environment which must be considered in the spacecraft design can be classified into five categories: vacuum, neutral gas, plasma, radiation, and micrometeoroid/orbital debris. The radiation is placed in it as the important environment because it has a large effect on the lifetime of the satellite and affects health of crew member. Experiments have been performed to measure the response of the silicon-based linear energy transfer (LET) spectrometer (RRMD-III) to protons with energies ranging from 1 to 70 MeV. The beam energies incident upon RRMD-III were obtained using plastic polycarbonate degraders with mono-energetic proton beams that were extracted at 70, 40 and 25 MeV from a cyclotron. The energy loss in the degraders never exceed 70% of the incident energy in order that the energy spread of the emerging protons created by straggling and scattering effects could be sppressed. Estimates of the LET were influenced by the asymmetric energy distribution of the degraded beam. Protons with energies less than 12.2 MeV did not reach the second Si detector in RRMD-III and were not measured. Measured values of LET were within +-7% of the expected value for incident particles was computed using a lookup table listing LET vs E, and a simple stopping power formula for a particle with charge Z and energy Er, where Er is the energy of the stopping particle measured in the second Si detector.

It is essential to evaluate the radiation risk for astronaut in space. The development of a new space dosimeter named 'Position Sensitive Tissue Equivalent Proportional Counter' (PS-TEPC) is started. This detector has good properties of both exiting dosimeters such as TEPC in NASA and Real-time Radiation Monitoring Device-3 (RRMD-3) based on a Si telescope. Gamma-ray spectrometers enable one to detect insensible radiation quantitatively. People unfamiliar to science, however, find it difficult to read results through data of the detectors often. This situation results in their indifference to radiation, though it is of great importance these days. We developed perceptible detectors of gamma-ray spectrometers, in which data of radiation are represented by glittering lights, beautiful tones, Morse code and whack-a-mole games. We held exhibition of the detector in SCIENCE AGORA 2013, and supplied opportunities for nonprofessional people to understand existence of the environmental radiation.
