Terellia ermolenkoi Korneyev, 1985 (Figs 19–26) Material examined. Armenia, Gegharkunik Prov., western coast of Sevan Lake, between Noratus Vill. and Eranos Vill., among rocks, 4 females and 4 males reared on 10.IV.2022 from capitula of Psephellus sp. collected on 25.VII.2021, D. Evstigneev leg. Comments. Larvae of this species develop on the same Psephellus sp. as larvae of Urophora sevanensis sp. nov. Terellia ermolenkoi was originally described by V. Korneyev (1985) from Azerbaijan, based on one male collected by Ermolenko. This species was reported from Armenia (Zarghani et al., 2016) and from the Caucasus in Russia: the Beshtau Mountain in the Stavropol’ Territory, the Jamagat Valley near Teberda in the Republic of Karachay-Cherkessia (Zarghani et al., 2016), and the Lagonaki Plateau in the Republic of Adygea (Shcherbakov, 2017). A description of females and redescription of males of this species was provided in the paper cited above (Zarghani et al., 2016). These authors found that larvae of T. ermolenkoi develop in the capitula of various species of the genus Psephellus. The morphological details of T. ermolenkoi are illustrated in Figs 19–26. The shape, position and colour elements of the scutal pattern (= scutal marks) are illustrated for the first time (Figs 23, 24). Distribution. D i a g n o s i s. This species can be differentiated from all other known species of Terellia by its dark brown wing pattern (fig. 1, e) of four widely connected crossbands resembling the Greek letters Π and Λ or inverted Latin letters V and U also fused along vein M 4 (= CuA 1), by the structure of the glans of the phallus (paired filaments of acrophallus, no bulged juxta at base of apicodorsal rod — figs 2, a–b) in combination with the striate patterns of the eye (fig. 1, f) and thoracic pleuron (figs 1, a–b, f–g). It is similar to the other species of the serratulae species group except in wing pattern; the other species all have entirely hyaline or slightly infuscated wings. Terellia ptilostemi appears to be most closely related to Terellia sabroskyi Freidberg which has the same host plant genus Ptilostemon, a darkened wing apex, dark bordered crossveins r-m and dm-m (= dm-cu) (pale brown in T. sabroskyi and black in T. ptilostemi), all setae (except postoculars) dark brown to black, the notopleuron and middle part of the proepisternum and anepisternum (at anterior spiracle level) brown, and oviscape moderately long (longer than tergites 4–6 combined in T. sabroskyi and slightly longer than tergites 3–6 in T. ptilostemi). D e s c r i p t i o n. H e a d pale yellowish, subshining, length: height: width ratio = 1.0: 1.0: 1.42, with FLagellomere 1, palp and proboscis yellow, ocellar triangle and arista brown to black, occiput with brown markings. Setae dark brown to black, looking paler in oblique light; postocular, postvertical and postocular setae white. Gena 0.3× as high as compound eye, brown setulose. Occiput ventrally white setulose. Palp brown setulose. Compound eye of live or freshly killed FLies greenish to red with purple horizontal band. Thorax. Mesonotum FLattened, scutum 1.3× as long as wide (measured between bases of notopleural setae), with lyrate black pattern almost reaching scuto-scutellar suture and postero-medial yellow triangle posterior to level of dorsocenral setae (fig. 1, c); dorsal part of postpronotal lobe, notopleuron and supra-alar area brown to black;ventral part of postpronotal lobe and dorsal margin of anepisternum creamy white; anepimeron and anepisternum at level of anterior spiracle brownish yellow to brown, ventral part of anepisternum and anepimeron usually yellow or with narrow creamy submedial stripe; katepisternum dorsally and meron creamy white to pale yellow, katepisternum with large triangular black spot ventromedially; postalar wall and posterior corner of anatergite black (figs 1, a–b, f–g). Scutellum FLattened, subtriangular, yellow except antero-ventral corners. Subscutellum brownish; mediotergite black, finely microtrichose laterally, with shiny patch medially. Legs yellow, with brownish tarsi, setae and setulae brown to black. Wing (figs 1, a–b, e–g) with 4 dark brown crossbands; cell bc and bases of cells bm and cua (= cup) yellowish, humeral vein bordered by brown spot; most of costal cell dark grey or brownish continuing into subbasal crossband extending from cell c across veins bm-m and section of vein CuA closing cell cua; discal band connected to subbasal band in pterostigma and cells r 1 and r 2+3 posterior of it covering crossvein r-m and extended to vein M 4 (= CuA 1) or occasionally narrowly interrupted in cell dm, connected to subapical band along vein M 4; subapical band reaching from apical part of cell r 1 across crossvein dm-m (= dm-cu) to posterior margin of wing at apex of vein M 4; widely fused to apical band in cells r 1 and r 2+3, apical band extended to apex of vein M 1. Hyaline incision between discal and subapical crossbands as wide as subapical crossband along vein R 4+5, reaching posteriorly to middle of cell dm. Halter whitish to yellowish. Abdomen (figs 1, b–c, f–g) yellow to brown, tergites 3–5(– 6 in female) each with two pairs of large subtriangular black spots at anterior margin; syntergite 1+2 usually with more or less distinct submedial pair of brown spots; tergite 5 of male with lateroapical black spots widely separated from laterobasal spots. Syntergite 1+2 entirely white setulose, tergites 3–5(– 6 in ♀) white setulose with medial areas of black setulae, these medial areas narrow in females and wider in males; tergite 5 of male mostly black setulose on posteromedial part, anterolaterally narrowly white setulose. Marginal setae on tergites 4–5(– 6 in ♀) mostly black. Tergite 5 of male 1.5 × as long as tergites 3 and 4 combined. Terminalia. Male (figs 2, a–b). Lateral surstylus with moderately long setulae, but without conspicuous marginal microtrichia. Phallus with glans very similar to that in T. serratulae (Linnaeus, 1758) with well developed basal ligula and inner dentate sclerite, narrow and moderately long paired filaments of acrophallus and moderately sclerotized apicodorsal rod without conspicuous bulged juxta at its base. Female. Oviscape (figs 1, c–d): FLattened triangular, yellow, black setulose, with black apex and pair of large triangular black anterolateral spots dorsally, sometimes fused forming entire black spot on anterior two-thirds and apex, and only brownish yellow at mid-length. Oviscape dorsally almost as long as tergites 3–6 combined and twice as long as costal cell. Eversible membrane (fig. 2, c) with moderately short taeniae and almost uniformly blunt subrectangular scales. Aculeus (fig. 2, d–e) 8.3–8.4× as long as wide, with long and narrow cercal unit: distance between ventral lobes (8th sterites) and apex 3× as long as width at level of apices of ventral lobes. Two tuberculate, conspicuously twisted spermathecae; spermathecal duct moderately long without transverse striation (fig. 2, f). Measurements [ mean, (min–max), mm]: Body length Ơ = 4.79 (4.5–5.08), wing length Ơ = 3.68 (3.46–3.9); body length ♀ = 6.22 (6.05–6.4), wing length ♀ = 4.3 (4.16–4.45), oviscape length, dorsally = 1.44 (1.33–1.56), oviscape length, ventrally (OLV) = 1.87 (1.83– 1.92), aculeus length (AL) = 1.77 (1.65–1.89); costal cell length (C2) = 0.8 (0.78–0.82); OLV/ C2 = 2.24 (2.14–2.34); AL/C2 = 2.2 (2.11–2.30). Third instar larva: length 5.74 (5.37–6.12), width 2.56 (2.5–2.62). Biology and host plants. Larvae (fig. 3) feed in the FLower heads of Ptilostemon rhiphaeus (Pau & Font Quer) Greuter (Asteraceae: Cardueae) growing in the limestone mountain ridge (fig. 2) at altitudes of 900–1800 m (fig. 4). One to three larvae were observed in each FLower head. The third instar larvae or prepupae overwinter and pupate in the FLower heads. First generation adults emerged in the laboratory from April 26 to May 20, 2020 and possibly somewhat later in nature. Adult FLies were collected by sweeping on the same plants from April to May and apparently mate and oviposit until June. Second generation larvae feed in FLower heads in July and pupate by the end of July and beginning of August. Second generation adults emerge and oviposit in August; larvae feed in August–September and then hibernate. Four endemic species of the genus Ptilostemon are known from North Africa; three are Moroccan endemics, and one is a Moroccan-Algerian endemic (Fennane et al., 1999). E t y m o l o g y. This new species is named for its host plant genus, Ptilostemon; the name is a noun in genitive case.

Terellia oasis (Hering, 1938) is closely related to T. vectensis (Collin, 1937) from Great Britain and to T. pseudovirens (Hering, 1940) from the Near East and South-Eastern Europe, which sometimes are considered to be synonyms, differing from each other by the host plants, as well as wing and abdominal patterns, but not by the structure of male and female genitalia. Terellia amberboae group of species Diagnosis. Species of the amberboae group are superficially similar to T. serratulae (Linnaeus, 1758) in having pointed flagellomere 1, hyaline wing and mainly white setulose abdomen, differing from that species by anteriorly narrowed head (in profile), produced facial carina, apically acute first flagellomere, and light yellow setae of head and body without black spots at their bases. Species of the amberboae group can be differentiated from all other species of the genus by the combination of the first flagellomere sharply pointed apicodorsally; wing with 1���3 large yellow or brown spots distally of vein R1 apex; mesonotum with wide black anteromedial and 2 narrowly separated posterolateral vittae, and no dark spots at the bases of any mesonotal setae; abdominal tergites shining yellow, each with 1 medial pair of rows of shining black spots, but no lateral spots; posterolateral margin of male tergite 5 entirely yellow. By the discovery of the two new species, a new group, namely the amberboae group of species is established here. Its position within the genus Terellia remains unclear. It is possibly either related to the serratulae or virens groups of species (sharing light yellow setose and white setulose abdomen), or with the virens +megalopyge +colon cluster (sharing association with Centaurea and other Centaureineae), or even appearing as basal lineage to both of them, showing no unequivocal evidences in phylogenetic analyses based on morphological (Korneyev, 1999) or molecular data (V. Flagellomere 1 with convex dorsal margin (Figs. 2, 3). Palp pale yellow, moderately long and narrow, mostly with yellow and 2���5 brown setae at apex; not extending beyond oral cavity. Thorax (Fig. 1): scutum with black lyrate pattern, white microtrichose, lateral postsutural vittae separated; central mark posteriorly reaching dorsocentral setae; one postsutural dorsocentral seta aligned with postsutural supra-alar setae, presutural dorsocentral setae not developed; no black shining spots at bases of setae; pleura light yellow with orange stripe and black to red triangular mark on katepisternum in male and unicolorous yellow with brown or reddish mark on katepisternum in female; pleura sparsely microtrichose; postpronotum and dorsal portion of anepisternum densely and moderately long white setulose; scutellum bright shining yellow, without black spots, with 2 pairs of subequal setae and 7���9 white marginal setulae; bases of scutellar setae in yellow field; mediottergite black, microtrichose laterally. Legs orange-yellow, fore femur with two rows of posterodorsal brownish-yellow setae and one row of white posteroventral setae. Amberboa sp. (V. Korneyev leg.) (SIZK). Description. Head (Fig. 9): shape generally as described for T. amberboae; HR = 1: 1.1: 1.6; genal height / eye height ratio 0.25. Peristomal setulae white, not spread anterio-dorsally beyond vibrissal edge, shorter than 0.5 of distance between genal and lower margin of gena; setulae anterior to genal seta short, yellow, subequal to peristomal; occipital setae white. Flagellomere 1 with convex dorsal margin. Palp pale yellow, moderately short, narrow. Thorax (Figs. 8, 11) as described for T. amberboae. Legs (Fig. 8) as described for T. amberboae, orange-yellow, fore femur with two rows of posterodorsal yellow setae and one row of white posteroventral setae. Wing: hyaline with pattern consisting of yellow pterostigma, and two brown spots in cell r1, (Fig. 10); distal section of vein M 1.75 times as long as section between crossveins r-m and dm-cu; cell bcu (=cup) with short posteroapical lobe not reaching level of bm-cu crossvein. WL ♀ = 4.7 mm. Abdomen: yellow; all tergites white setulose, with yellow or brownish-yellow marginal setae; tergites 3���6 each with 2 large black spots mediobasally wider than yellow area between them. Female terminalia (not dissected): aculeus apically acute, as in T. amberboae (Fig. 12); AL = 1.25 mm; AL/ C2 = 1.1. Male unknown. Host plant unknown. Discussion. This species is closely related to T. amberboae in having an acute aculeus, differing from it by the smaller dark brown spots on wing (large and pale yellow in T. amberboae). Etymology. A host choice experiment was carried out to determine the host range of some potential biological control agents of yellow starthistle (Centaurea solstitialis), a Mediterranean plant which has become a serious rangeland weed in western USA. This paper describes the results of that experiment and discusses its taxonomic implications. The experiment confirmed the extreme host specificity of some species. However, two reputedly polyphagous species, Acanthiophilus helianthi (Rossi) and Urophora quadrifasciata (Meigen), attacked a narrower range of hosts than expected. The results of this and similar host choice experiments are discussed and it is concluded that this sort of anomaly can be caused by the existence of host races, unrecognized sibling species, or by varieties of plants naturally resistant to attack. These complex patterns of host relationship highlight the need to interpret host catalogue data cautiously, as they oversimplify complex biological systems. The identity of one species reared in the experiment, Terellia luteola (Wiedemann), is discussed; a key is presented for its separation from other Terellia species, and it is removed from synonymy with T. colon (Meigen).

The Terellia virens group includes eight species of uniformly greenish flies with white setulose abdomens and hyaline wings, variable in the characters of the male and female terminalia. Three new species are described and illustrated: Terellia freidbergi sp. n. from Middle and Near East, from flower heads of Centaurea behen L., T. ivannikovi V. Korneyev et Evstigneev, sp. n. from European Russia, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, breeding in flower heads of Ce. chartolepis Greuter, and T. whitei V.?Korneyev et Mohamadzade, sp. n. reared from flower heads of Cousinia spp. in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan and Iran. Illustrated diagnoses or redescriptions of other species and a key to the species of Terellia with hyaline wings and white setulose abdominal tergites are given. Description. Head (Fig. 2). All part of head yellow except ocellar triangle brown to black. Antenna yellow, scape with six to eight blackish setulae at dorso-apical margin; first flagellomere light yellow, 1.8 times as long as wide and distinctly rounded apicodorsally; arista very short pubescent, yellow at base and black in its slender part. Proboscis capitate with brown setulae. Three frontal and two orbital setae present. Postocular and postgenal setae white and genal yellowish; Subvibrissal setae black. Thorax. Yellow in ground color. Scutum with black lyrate pattern, densely covered by white microtrichia and three pairs of shining black spots: one pair at suture and 2 pairs bases of dorsocentral and prescutellar acrostichal setae. Pleuron yellow; only triangular mark on katepisternum and meron black, obscured by gray microtrichia; scutellum yellow; subscutellum and mediotergite black. All setae on thorax yellowish brown. Scutellum with 2 pairs of black setae (apical 0.7 as long as basal one), slightly convex, without dark spots. Halter yellow. Legs completely yellow, without modifications; fore femur with 10 long yellow posterior and 4 brownish ventral setae; setulae brownish. Wing (Fig. 1). Hyaline with pattern of 4 well developed yellow to brownish crossbands, in general, similar to T. tarbinskiorum Korneyev 2006; wing base and alula yellowish; subbasal crossband reaching from costal cell to A 1 +CuA 2 vein. Discal crossband complete, crossing wing from pterostigma through r-m crossvein into cua 1 cell. Preapical band complete, reaching to posterior margin. Subbasal and discal crossbands fused in r 1 cell; preapical and apical crossbands widely separated: hyaline interval between them along R 2 + 3 vein as wide as preapical crossband. Setae on dorsal side of vein R 1 without gap at Sc apex level. Vein R 4 + 5 bare. Abdomen. General color dark yellow; setulae mostly white, black on posteromedial portion of male tergite 5. Tergites 4���6 in female with two pairs of black spots at anterior margin and tergite 3 with only one pair of such spots. Tergites 4���5 in male with two pairs of spots and tergite 3 with only one pair of spots at anterior margin. In addition, tergite 5 with one pair of posterior spots. Marginal setae on female tergites 5���6 pale brown; tergite 5 of male 0.3 times as long as abdomen. Male terminalia. Epandrium and hypandrium as in other species of this group. Glans as in Fig. 5, large, with wide tubular base of acrophallus and rather long apical semitubular lobes, wall of preputium sclerotized only dorsally. Female terminalia. Oviscape yellow, about as long as preceding 3 abdominal tergites. Aculeus (Figs. 3���4) rather bluntly pointed, its apex 1.3 times as long as wide, with 3 pairs of subapical trichoid sensilla and pair of rather large campaniform sensilla. Aculeus length/width ratio = 4.2. Two papillose spermathecae as in T. tarbinskiorum. Measurements. WL 3 = 2.8���3.7 mm (average 3.2); WL �� = 3���3.8 mm; (average 3.6); AL = 0.7���0.9 mm (average 0.75); AL/C 2 = 0.7���0.9 (average 0.76) (n = 5). Discussion. Terellia korneyevorum sp. nov. is very similar to two other species of this group in male and female genitalia structure differing mainly by wing pattern details. In T. korneyevorum sp. nov., the apical and preapical crossbands are separated at anterior margin of the wing and discal and preapical crossbands are narrower compared to the other two species. These characters are constant in the type specimens collected in geographically distant Yazd and Kurdistan provinces of Iran showing no intermediate conditions. Etymology. Terellia korneyevorum sp. nov., reared from flower heads of Echinops spp. is described from Iran. It is similar to T. tarbinskiorum Korneyev and T. bushi Korneyev in its mesonotum pattern and male genitalia structure, differing by its narrow, widely separated preapical and apical crossbands. The three species are separated from the quadratula group of species to form a new group; the diagnosis of the tarbinskiorum group of species is given. All the species of this group share presence of three pairs of black shining spots on the scutum, one on the transverse suture, one at the dorsocentral and one at prescutellar acrostichal seta base. They also share such a pattern with the species of Orellia Robineau-Desvoidy 1830, differing by the structure of male genitalia and different host plants. A key to the species of tarbinskiorum group is given.
