Abstract

In recent years, the scientific community has called for improvements in the credibility, robustness, and reproducibility of research, characterized by increased interest and promotion of open and transparent research practices. While progress has been positive, there is a lack of consideration about how this approach can be embedded into undergraduate and postgraduate research training. Specifically, a critical overview of the literature which investigates how integrating open and reproducible science may influence student outcomes is needed. In this paper, we provide the first critical review of literature surrounding the integration of open and reproducible scholarship into teaching and learning and its associated outcomes in students. Our review highlighted how embedding open and reproducible scholarship appears to be associated with (1) students’ scientific literacies (i.e., students’ understanding of open research, consumption of science, and the development of transferable skills); (2) student engagement (i.e., motivation and engagement with learning, collaboration, and engagement in open research), and (3) students’ attitudes towards science (i.e., trust in science and confidence in research findings). However, our review also identified a need for more robust and rigorous methods within pedagogical research, including more interventional and experimental evaluations of teaching practice. We discuss implications for teaching and learning scholarship.

Abstract

This large, international dataset contains survey responses from N = 12,570 students from 100 universities in 35 countries, collected in 21 languages. We measured anxieties (statistics, mathematics, test, trait, social interaction, performance, creativity, intolerance of uncertainty, and fear of negative evaluation), self-efficacy, persistence, and the cognitive reflection test, and collected demographics, previous mathematics grades, self-reported and official statistics grades, and statistics module details. Data reuse potential is broad, including testing links between anxieties and statistics/mathematics education factors, and examining instruments’ psychometric properties across different languages and contexts.

Abstract

In recent years, the scientific community has called for improvements in the credibility, robustness and reproducibility of research, characterized by increased interest and promotion of open and transparent research practices. While progress has been positive, there is a lack of consideration about how this approach can be embedded into undergraduate and postgraduate research training. Specifically, a critical overview of the literature which investigates how integrating open and reproducible science may influence student outcomes is needed. In this paper, we provide the first critical review of literature surrounding the integration of open and reproducible scholarship into teaching and learning and its associated outcomes in students. Our review highlighted how embedding open and reproducible scholarship appears to be associated with (i) students' scientific literacies (i.e. students’ understanding of open research, consumption of science and the development of transferable skills); (ii) student engagement (i.e. motivation and engagement with learning, collaboration and engagement in open research) and (iii) students' attitudes towards science (i.e. trust in science and confidence in research findings). However, our review also identified a need for more robust and rigorous methods within pedagogical research, including more interventional and experimental evaluations of teaching practice. We discuss implications for teaching and learning scholarship.

Abstract

This is a pre-registration (before data collection) of a mixed methods questionnaire which seeks to examine the experience of UK-based psychology PhD students with open science. All participants will be asked about their perception of QRPs, their perception of significant and non-significant findings, and their perception of statistical practices such as power analysis and reporting effect sizes. Participants will then be filtered by awareness of open science, and those who have heard of it will be asked to qualitatively describe open science, identify any open science practices that they engage with, and discuss their experiences with open science such as supervisor attitudes, the costs and benefits of open science as a PhD student, and any personal barriers they have faced. Due to the exploratory nature of this research, no power analysis has been used to establish a sample size. The intention is to capture 500+ psychology PhD students in the UK to try and provide a large proportional sample of the population. Participants will be recruited via opportunity sampling using methods such as social media, mailing lists and word of mouth. Data analysis will be exploratory, although an analysis plan will be made based on simulated data before the actual data is downloaded and analysed to guide analysis. Qualitative analysis will take the form of content or thematic analysis depending on data richness for each free-text question.

Abstract

Summary: Pre-registration of a pilot study that examines differences between maths and statistics anxieties at the beginning and end of a statistics course for postgraduate maths education students to explore the nature of the underlying construct(s). Background: Recent research indicated that >98% of an undergraduate psychology student sample scored similarly on maths anxiety measures to statistics anxiety measures (Terry and Field, 2021; https://osf.io/8jk5v/). One explanation for this finding is that statistics anxiety and maths anxiety share an underlying construct. However, it is unclear whether this underlying construct is something unique to maths and statistics (e.g. numerical anxiety). If it is, then we would expect postgraduate maths education students (who should be lower in math anxiety to psychology students) to also be low in statistics anxiety. Anecdotal reports from course instructors suggest this may not be the case. The present project aims to test this empirically.

Abstract

In recent years, the scientific community has called for improvements in the credibility, robustness and reproducibility of research, characterized by increased interest and promotion of open and transparent research practices. While progress has been positive, there is a lack of consideration about how this approach can be embedded into undergraduate and postgraduate research training. Specifically, a critical overview of the literature which investigates how integrating open and reproducible science may influence student outcomes is needed. In this paper, we provide the first critical review of literature surrounding the integration of open and reproducible scholarship into teaching and learning and its associated outcomes in students. Our review highlighted how embedding open and reproducible scholarship appears to be associated with (i) students’ scientific literacies (i.e. students’ understanding of open research, consumption of science and the development of transferable skills); (ii) student engagement (i.e. motivation and engagement with learning, collaboration and engagement in open research) and (iii) students’ attitudes towards science (i.e. trust in science and confidence in research findings). However, our review also identified a need for more robust and rigorous methods within pedagogical research, including more interventional and experimental evaluations of teaching practice. We discuss implications for teaching and learning scholarship.

Abstract

Open scholarship has transformed research, and introduced a host of new terms in the lexicon of researchers. The ‘Framework for Open and Reproducible Research Teaching’ (FORRT) community presents a crowdsourced glossary of open scholarship terms to facilitate education and effective communication between experts and newcomers.
