1. Stellar s-process neutron capture cross section of Ce isotopes

Abstract

Stellar abundances of cerium are of high current interest based both on observations and theoretical models, especially with regard to the neutron--magic $^{140}$Ce isotope. A large discrepancy of $s-$process stellar models relative to cerium abundance observed in globular clusters was highlighted, pointing to possible uncertainties in experimental nuclear reaction rates. In this work, the stellar neutron capture cross section of the stable cerium isotopes $^{136}$Ce, $^{138}$Ce, $^{140}$Ce, and $^{142}$Ce, were re-measured. A $^{nat}$Ce sample was irradiated with quasi-Maxwellian neutrons at $kT = 34.2$ keV using the $^{7}$Li($p,n$) reaction. The neutron field with an intensity of $3-5 \times 10^{10}$ n/s was produced by irradiating the liquid-lithium target (LiLiT) with a mA proton beam at an energy (1.92 MeV) just above the threshold at Soreq Applied Research Accelerator Facility (SARAF). The activities of the $^{nat}$Ce neutron capture products were measured using a shielded High Purity Germanium detector. Cross sections were extracted relative to that of the $^{197}$Au(n,$\gamma$) reaction and the Maxwellian-averaged cross section (MACS) of the Ce isotopes were derived. The MACS values extracted from this experiment are generally consistent with previous measurements and show for $^{140}$Ce a value $\approx 15$\% smaller than most recent experimental values., Comment: 9 pages, 12 figures. Abstract

The stable gallium isotopes, $^{69,71}$Ga, are mostly produced by the weak slow ($s$) process in massive stars. We report here on measurements of astrophysically-relevant neutron capture cross sections of the $^{69,71}$Ga$(n,\gamma)$ reactions. The experiments were performed by the activation technique using a high-intensity ($3-5\times10^{10}$ n/s), quasi-Maxwellian neutron beam that closely mimics conditions of stellar $s$-process nucleosynthesis at $kT \approx$ 40 keV. The neutron field was produced by a mA proton beam at $E_p=1925$ keV (beam power of 2-3 kW) from the Soreq Applied Research Accelerator Facility (SARAF), bombarding the Liquid-Lithium Target (LiLiT). A 473 mg sample of Ga$_2$O$_3$ of natural isotopic composition was activated in the LiLiT neutron field and the activities of $^{70,72}$Ga were measured by decay counting via $\gamma$-spectrometry with a high-purity germanium detector. The Maxwellian-averaged cross sections at $kT$ = 30 keV of $^{69}$Ga and $^{71}$Ga determined in this work are 136(8) mb and 105(7) mb, respectively, in good agreement with previous experimental values. Astrophysical implications of the measurements are discussed.

Abstract

The $^{36}$Ar$(n,\gamma)^{37}$Ar ($t_{1/2}$ = 35 d) and $^{38}$Ar$(n,\gamma)^{39}$Ar (269 y) reactions were studied for the first time with a quasi-Maxwellian ($kT \sim 47$ keV) neutron flux for Maxwellian Average Cross Section (MACS) measurements at stellar energies. Gas samples were irradiated at the high-intensity Soreq applied research accelerator facility-liquid-lithium target neutron source and the $^{37}$Ar/$^{36}$Ar and $^{39}$Ar/$^{38}$Ar ratios in the activated samples were determined by accelerator mass spectrometry at the ATLAS facility (Argonne National Laboratory). The $^{37}$Ar activity was also measured by low-level counting at the University of Bern. Experimental MACS of $^{36}$Ar and $^{38}$Ar, corrected to the standard 30 keV thermal energy, are 1.9(3) mb and 1.3(2) mb, respectively, differing from the theoretical and evaluated values published to date by up to an order of magnitude. The neutron capture cross sections of $^{36,38}$Ar are relevant to the stellar nucleosynthesis of light neutron-rich nuclides; the two experimental values are shown to affect the calculated mass fraction of nuclides in the region A=36-48 during the weak $s$-process. The new production cross sections have implications also for the use of $^{37}$Ar and $^{39}$Ar as environmental tracers in the atmosphere and hydrosphere., Comment: 18 pages + Supp. Mat. Abstract

A high-power Liquid-Lithium Target (LiLiT) was used for the first time for neutron production via the thick-target 7Li(p,n)7Be reaction and quantitative determination of neutron capture cross sections. Bombarded with a 1-2 mA proton beam at 1.92 MeV from the Soreq Applied Research Accelerator Facility (SARAF), the setup yields a 30-keV quasi-Maxwellian neutron spectrum with an intensity of 3-5e10 n/s, more than one order of magnitude larger than present near-threshold 7Li(p,n) neutron sources. The setup was used here to determine the 30-keV Maxwellian averaged cross section (MACS) of 94Zr and 96Zr as 28.0+-0.6 mb and 12.4+-0.5 mb respectively, based on activation measurements. The precision of the cross section determinations results both from the high neutron yield and from detailed simulations of the entire experimental setup. We plan to extend our experimental studies to low-abundance and radioactive targets. In addition, we show here that the setup yields intense high-energy (17.6 and 14.6 MeV) prompt capture gamma-rays from the 7Li(p,gamma)8Be reaction with yields of ~3e8 gammas/s/mA and ~4e8 gammas/s/mA, respectively, evidenced by the 90Zr(gamma,n)89Zr photonuclear reaction., Comment: 20 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

The cross-section of the thermal neutron capture 41Ar(n,γ)42Ar(t1/2=32.9 y) reaction was measured by irradiating a 40Ar sample at the high-flux reactor of Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL) Grenoble, France. The signature of the two-neutron capture has been observed by measuring the growth curve and identifying the 1524.6 keV γ-lines of the shorter-lived 42K(12.4 h) β− daughter of 42Ar. Our preliminary value of the 41Ar(n,γ)42Ar thermal cross section is 240(80) mb at 25.3 meV. For the first time, direct counting of 42Ar was performed using the ultra-high sensitivity technique of noble gas accelerator mass spectrometry (NOGAMS) at Argonne National Laboratory, USA.

We plan to investigate neutron-induced reactions on 40Ar, namely the 40Ar(n, 2n)39Ar(t1/2 =268 y), the 40Ar(n, γ)41Ar(110 min) and the potential rapid two-neutron capture reaction 40Ar(2n, γ)42Ar(33 y) in an Ar-loaded DT capsule. The chemical inertness of noble gas Ar enables reliable collection of the reaction products.

Abstract

A compact Liquid-Lithium Target (LiLiT) was built and tested with a high-power electron gun at Soreq Nuclear Research Center. The lithium target, to be bombarded by the high-intensity proton beam of the Soreq Applied Research Accelerator Facility (SARAF), will constitute an intense source of neutrons produced by the 7Li(p,n)7Be reaction for nuclear astrophysics research and as a pilot setup for accelerator-based Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT). The liquid-lithium jet target acts both as neutron-producing target and beam dump by removing the beam thermal power (>5 kW, >1 MW/cm3) with fast transport. The target was designed based on a thermal model, accompanied by a detailed calculation of the 7Li(p,n) neutron yield, energy distribution and angular distribution. Liquid lithium is circulated through the target loop at ~200oC and generates a stable 1.5 mm-thick film flowing at a velocity up to 7 m/s onto a concave supporting wall. Electron beam irradiation demonstrated that the liquid-lithium target can dissipate electron power areal densities of > 4 kW/cm2 and volume power density of ~ 2 MW/cm3 at a lithium flow of ~4 m/s while maintaining stable temperature and vacuum conditions. We describe here the technique of Noble-Gas Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (NOGAMS) to be used for ultra-sensitive detection of the long-lived 39Ar and 42Ar at Argonne National Laboratory. A 42Ar(33 y) sample was produced via the slow two-neutron capture reaction 40Ar(2n, gamma)42Ar in a high thermal-neutron flux irradiation. 39Ar and for the first time 42Ar atoms were directly detected in the abundance range 10^-12 -- 10^-13 . The present sensitivity of 42Ar detection is of the order of 104 atoms.

Abstract

Neutron capture cross sections are among the main inputs for nucleosynthesis network calculations. Although well known for the majority of the stable isotopes, this quantity is still unknown for most of the unstable isotopes of interest. A recent collaboration between ILL, PSI, U. Sevilla and IFIC aims at producing the isotopes of interest at ILL, preparing suitable targets at PSI, and measuring their capture cross sections at facilities such as n_TOF/CERN, LiLiT and the Budapest Research Reactor (BRR). This work is focused on the description of the different beams and techniques and shows some highlights of the preliminary results of the capture measurements on 171Tm, 147Pm and 204Tl, along with the future plans for 79Se and 163Ho.

Abstract

The neutron capture cross section of several key unstable isotopes acting as branching points in the s-process are crucial for stellar nucleosynthesis studies, but they are very challenging to measure due to the difficult production of sufficient sample material, the high activity of the resulting samples, and the actual (n,γ) measurement, for which high neutron fluxes and effective background rejection capabilities are required. As part of a new program to measure some of these important branching points, radioactive targets of 147Pm and 171Tm have been produced by irradiation of stable isotopes at the ILL high flux reactor. Neutron capture on 146Nd and 170Er at the reactor was followed by beta decay and the resulting matrix was purified via radiochemical separation at PSI. The radioactive targets have been used for time-of-flight measurements at the CERN n_TOF facility using the 19 and 185 m beam lines during 2014 and 2015. The capture cascades were detected using a set of four C6D6 scintillators, allowing to observe the associated neutron capture resonances. The results presented in this work are the first ever determination of the resonance capture cross section of 147Pm and 171Tm. Activation experiments on the same 147Pm and 171Tm targets with a high-intensity 30 keV quasi-Maxwellian flux of neutrons will be performed using the SARAF accelerator and the Liquid-Lithium Target (LiLiT) in order to extract the corresponding Maxwellian Average Cross Section (MACS). The status of these experiments and preliminary results will be presented and discussed as well.

Abstract

We present a detailed account of neutron capture experiments of astrophysical relevance on 78,80,84,86Kr (n ,γ ) reactions at the border between weak and main s process. The experiments were performed with quasi-Maxwellian neutrons from the Liquid-Lithium Target (LiLiT) and the mA-proton beam at 1.93 MeV (2-3 kW) of the Soreq Applied Research Accelerator Facility (SARAF). The setup yields high-intensity ≈40 keV quasi-Maxwellian neutrons (3-5 ×1010 n /s) closely reproducing the conditions of s -process stellar nucleosynthesis. A sample of 100 mg of atmospheric, pre-nuclear-age Kr gas contained in a Ti spherical shell was activated in the LiLiT neutron field. The abundances of long-lived Kr isotopes (81,85 gKr) were measured by atom counting via atom trap trace analysis (ATTA) at Argonne National Laboratory and low-level counting (LLC) at University of Bern. This work is the first measurement of a nuclear cross section using atom counting via ATTA. The activities of short-lived Kr isotopes (79,85 m,87Kr) were measured by γ -decay counting with a high-purity germanium detector. Maxwellian-averaged cross sections for s -process thermal energies are extracted. By comparison to reference values, our nucleosynthesis network calculations show that the experimental cross sections have a strong impact on calculated abundances of krypton and neighboring nuclides, in some cases improving agreement between theory and observations.

The unstable Tm 171 (t1 /2=1.92 yr ) is part of the branching around mass A ∼170 but its neutron capture cross section as a function of the neutron energy is not known to date. In this work, following the production for the first time of more than 5 mg of Tm 171 at the high-flux reactor Institut Laue-Langevin in France, a sample was produced at the Paul Scherrer Institute in Switzerland. Two complementary experiments were carried out at the neutron time-of-flight facility (n _TOF ) at CERN in Switzerland and at the SARAF liquid lithium target facility at Soreq Nuclear Research Center in Israel by time of flight and activation, respectively. The result of the time-of-flight experiment consists of the first ever set of resonance parameters and the corresponding average resonance parameters, allowing us to make an estimation of the Maxwellian-averaged cross sections (MACS) by extrapolation. The activation measurement provides a direct and more precise measurement of the MACS at 30 keV: 384(40) mb, with which the estimation from the n _TOF data agree at the limit of 1 standard deviation. This value is 2.6 times lower than the JEFF-3.3 and ENDF/B-VIII evaluations, 25% lower than that of the Bao et al. compilation, and 1.6 times larger than the value recommended in the KADoNiS (v1) database, based on the only previous experiment. Our result affects the nucleosynthesis at the A ∼170 branching, namely, the Yb 171 abundance increases in the material lost by asymptotic giant branch stars, providing a better match to the available pre-solar SiC grain measurements compared to the calculations based on the current JEFF-3.3 model-based evaluation.

40. The -process in the Nd-Pm-Sm region: Neutron activation of Pm

Abstract

The Nd-Pm-Sm branching is of interest for the study of the s-process, related to the production of heavy elements in stars. As $^{148}$Sm and $^{150}$Sm are s-only isotopes, the understanding of the branching allows constraining the s-process neutron density. In this context the key physics input needed is the cross section of the three unstable nuclides in the region: $^{147}$Nd (10.98 d half-life), $^{147}$Pm (2.62 yr) and $^{148}$Pm (5.37 d). This paper reports on the activation measurement of $^{147}$Pm, the longest-lived of the three nuclides. The cross section measurement has been carried out by activation at the SARAF LiLiT facility using a 56(2) μg target. Compared to the single previous measurement of $^{147}$Pm, the measurement presented herein benefits from a target 2000 times more massive. The resulting Maxwellian Averaged Cross Section (MACS) to the ground and metastable states in $^{148}$Pm are 469(50) mb and 357(27) mb. These values are 41% higher (to the ground state) and 15% lower (to the metastable state) than the values reported so far, leading however to a total cross section of 826(107) mb consistent within uncertainties with the previous result and hence leaving unchanged the previous calculation of the s-process neutron density.

Abstract

The nuclide ³⁵Cl can act as a minor "neutron poison" in the stellar slow neutron capture process. Neutron activation combined with accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) was applied to measure the (n,gamma) cross section of ³⁵Cl for neutron spectra simulating Maxwell-Boltzmann distributions of kT ~30 keV and 40 keV, respectively. The neutron activations were performed at the Karlsruhe Van de Graaff accelerator and at the superconducting linear accelerator of the Soreq Applied Research Accelerator Facility utilizing the ⁷L(p,n)⁷Be reaction. AMS measurements of the irradiated samples were performed at the 3 MV Vienna Environmental Research Accelerator, the 6 MV tandem accelerator at the Dresden AMS facility, and the 14 UD tandem accelerator of the Australian National University in Canberra. Our method is independent of previous measurements. For an energy of kT=30 keV, we report a Maxwellian averaged cross sections of 8.33(32) mb. Using this new value in stellar isotopic abundance calculations, minor changes for the abundances of ³⁵Cl, ³⁶Cl and ³⁶S are derived.

46. Stellar 30-keV neutron capture in 94, 96Zr and the Zr90(γ,n)Zr89 photonuclear reaction with a high-power liquid-lithium target

Abstract

A high-power Liquid-Lithium Target (LiLiT) was used for the first time for neutron production via the thick-target Li7(p,n)Be7 reaction and quantitative determination of neutron capture cross sections. Bombarded with a 1–2 mA proton beam at 1.92 MeV from the Soreq Applied Research Accelerator Facility (SARAF), the setup yields a 30-keV quasi-Maxwellian neutron spectrum with an intensity of 3– 5×1010 n/s , more than one order of magnitude larger than present near-threshold Li7(p,n) neutron sources. The setup was used here to determine the 30-keV Maxwellian averaged cross section (MACS) of 94 Zr and 96 Zr as 28.0±0.6 mb and 12.4±0.5 mb respectively, based on activation measurements. The precision of the cross section determinations results both from the high neutron yield and from detailed simulations of the entire experimental setup. We plan to extend our experimental studies to low-abundance and radioactive targets. In addition, we show here that the setup yields intense high-energy (17.6 and 14.6 MeV) prompt capture γ rays from the Li7(p,γ)Be8 reaction with yields of ∼3×108γs−1mA−1 and ∼4×108γs−1mA−1 , respectively, evidenced by the Zr90(γ,n)Zr89 photonuclear reaction.
