Abstract

The Spin Physics Detector collaboration proposes to install a universal detector in the second interaction point of the NICA collider under construction (JINR, Dubna) to study the spin structure of the proton and deuteron and other spin-related phenomena using a unique possibility to operate with polarized proton and deuteron beams at a collision energy up to 27 GeV and a luminosity up to $10^{32}$ cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$. As the main goal, the experiment aims to provide access to the gluon TMD PDFs in the proton and deuteron, as well as the gluon transversity distribution and tensor PDFs in the deuteron, via the measurement of specific single and double spin asymmetries using different complementary probes such as charmonia, open charm, and prompt photon production processes. Other polarized and unpolarized physics is possible, especially at the first stage of NICA operation with reduced luminosity and collision energy of the proton and ion beams. This document is dedicated exclusively to technical issues of the SPD setup construction.

11. High Rate Studies of the ATLAS sTGC Detector and Optimization of the Filter Circuit on the Input of the Front-End Amplifier

Abstract

The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN is expected to be upgraded to the High-Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) by 2029 and achieve instantaneous luminosity around 5 - 7.5 $\times$ 10$^{34}$cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$. This represents a more than 3-4 fold increase in the instantaneous luminosity compared to what has been achieved in Run 2. The New Small Wheel (NSW) upgrade is designed to be able to operate efficiently in this high background rate environment. In this article, we summarize multiple performance studies of the small-strip Thin Gap Chamber (sTGC) at high rate using nearly final front-end electronics. We demonstrate that the efficiency versus rate distribution can be well described by an exponential decay with electronics dead-time being the primary cause of loss of efficiency at high rate. We then demonstrate several methods that can decrease the electronics dead-time and therefore minimize efficiency loss. One such method is to install either a pi-network input filter or pull-up resistor to minimize the charge input into the amplifier. We optimized the pi-network capacitance and pull-up resistor resistance using the results from our measurements. The results shown here were not only critical to finalizing the components on the front-end board, but also are critical for setting the optimal operating parameters of the sTGC detector and electronics in the ATLAS cavern., Comment: to be submitted

Abstract

Dark photons are hypothetical massive vector particles that could mix with ordinary photons. The simplest theoretical model is fully characterised by only two parameters: the mass of the dark photon m$_{\gamma^{\mathrm{D}}}$ and its mixing parameter with the photon, $\varepsilon$. The sensitivity of the SHiP detector is reviewed for dark photons in the mass range between 0.002 and 10 GeV. Different production mechanisms are simulated, with the dark photons decaying to pairs of visible fermions, including both leptons and quarks. Exclusion contours are presented and compared with those of past experiments. The SHiP detector is expected to have a unique sensitivity for m$_{\gamma^{\mathrm{D}}}$ ranging between 0.8 and 3.3$^{+0.2}_{-0.5}$ GeV, and $\varepsilon^2$ ranging between $10^{-11}$ and $10^{-17}$.

Abstract

This paper discusses the issues with liquidity that inhibit adoption of so-called wrapped tokens, i.e. digital assets issued in one blockchain ecosystem (origin) with representation in other blockchain networks (destination), and an incentive model and a governance mechanism for solving these issues are suggested. The proposed liquidity model called Graviton can be implemented both within the framework of a single destination chain, or as a blockchain-agnostic solution combining various blockchain platforms together and providing liquidity to wrapped tokens in each of them. This model does not depend on how cross-chain transfer gateways are implemented, and can work with both centralized gates and bridges, or decentralized trustless gateways, as well as gateways based on oracle networks and threshold signatures.

Abstract

We propose to build and operate a detector that, for the first time, will measure the process $pp\to\nu X$ at the LHC and search for feebly interacting particles (FIPs) in an unexplored domain. The TI18 tunnel has been identified as a suitable site to perform these measurements due to very low machine-induced background. The detector will be off-axis with respect to the ATLAS interaction point (IP1) and, given the pseudo-rapidity range accessible, the corresponding neutrinos will mostly come from charm decays: the proposed experiment will thus make the first test of the heavy flavour production in a pseudo-rapidity range that is not accessible by the current LHC detectors. In order to efficiently reconstruct neutrino interactions and identify their flavour, the detector will combine in the target region nuclear emulsion technology with scintillating fibre tracking layers and it will adopt a muon identification system based on scintillating bars that will also play the role of a hadronic calorimeter. The time of flight measurement will be achieved thanks to a dedicated timing detector. The detector will be a small-scale prototype of the scattering and neutrino detector (SND) of the SHiP experiment: the operation of this detector will provide an important test of the neutrino reconstruction in a high occupancy environment., Comment: Letter of Intent

Abstract

This work is dedicated to the study of a technique for hadron identification in the TeV momentum range, based on the simultaneous measurement of the energies and of the emission angles of the Transition Radiation (TR) X-rays with respect to the radiating particles. A detector setup has been built and tested with particles in a wide range of Lorentz factors (from about $10^3$ to about $4 \times 10^4$ crossing different types of radiators. Abstract

Operating conditions and challenging demands of present and future accelerator experiments result in new requirements on detector systems. There are many ongoing activities aimed to develop new technologies and to improve the properties of detectors based on existing technologies. Our work is dedicated to development of Transition Radiation Detectors (TRD) suitable for different applications. In this paper results obtained in beam tests at SPS accelerator at CERN with the TRD prototype based on straw technology are presented. TRD performance was studied as a function of thickness of the transition radiation radiator and working gas mixture pressure.

Abstract

Towards the end of LHC Run1, gas leaks were observed in some parts of the Transition Radiation Tracker (TRT) of ATLAS. Due to these leaks, primary Xenon based gas mixture was replaced with Argon based mixture in various parts. Test-beam studies with a dedicated Transition Radiation Detector (TRD) prototype were carried out in 2015 in order to understand transition radiation performance with mixtures based on Argon and Krypton. Abstract

A new general purpose fixed target facility is proposed at the CERN SPS accelerator which is aimed at exploring the domain of hidden particles and make measurements with tau neutrinos. Hidden particles are predicted by a large number of models beyond the Standard Model. The high intensity of the SPS 400~GeV beam allows probing a wide variety of models containing light long-lived exotic particles with masses below ${\cal O}$(10)~GeV/c$^2$, including very weakly interacting low-energy SUSY states. The experimental programme of the proposed facility is capable of being extended in the future, e.g. to include direct searches for Dark Matter and Lepton Flavour Violation., Comment: Technical Proposal

Abstract

The article discusses the relevance of increasing the sowing qualities of forest seeds. The results of studies on the influence of humic preparations on the sowing qualities of the European spruce (Picea abies) are presented. The positive effect of the studied humic preparations on the germinative energy and germinating ability of seeds was noted. The best effect is obtained when processing seeds which have reduced sowing qualities. The dependence of germinating ability of seeds on duration of soaking in the working solution of humic preparations and the content of the active substance in them has been established. The best indicators of germinating ability and germinative energy were noted when the seeds were soaked for 20 hours in a humic preparation with a humic acid content of 9.9 g/l. Abstract

Materials in which charge and spin degrees of freedom interact strongly offer applications known as spintronics. Following a remarkable success of metallic spintronics based on the giant-magnetoresistive effect, tremendous efforts have been invested into the less developed semiconductor spintronics, in particular, with the aim to produce three-terminal spintronic devices, e.g. spin transistors. One of the most important prerequisites for such a technology is an effective injection of spin-polarized carriers from a ferromagnetic semiconductor into a nonmagnetic semiconductor, preferably one of those currently used for industrial applications such as Si - a workhorse of modern electronics. Ferromagnetic semiconductor EuO is long believed to be the best candidate for integration of magnetic semiconductor with Si. Although EuO proved to offer optimal conditions for effective spin injection into silicon and in spite of considerable efforts, the direct epitaxial stabilization of stoichiometric EuO thin films on Si without any buffer layer has not been demonstrated to date. Here we report a new technique for control of EuO/Si interface on submonolayer level which may have general implications for the growth of functional oxides on Si. Using this technique we solve a long-standing problem of direct epitaxial growth on silicon of thin EuO films which exhibit structural and magnetic properties of EuO bulk material.
