Tetrachloroethylene (PCE) is a widely utilized volatile chemical in industrial applications, including dry cleaning and metal degreasing. Exposure to PCE potentially presents a significant health risk to workers as well as communities near contamination sites. Adverse health effects arise not only from PCE, but also from PCE degradation products, such as trichloroethylene (TCE) and vinyl chloride (VC). PCE, TCE, and VC can contaminate water, soil, and air, leading to exposure through multiple pathways, including inhalation, ingestion, and dermal contact. This study focused on a community setting in Martinsville, Indiana, a working-class Midwestern community in the United States, where extensive PCE contamination has occurred due to multiple contamination sites (referring to 'plumes'), including a Superfund site. Utilizing proton transfer reaction time-of-flight mass spectrometry (PTR-TOF-MS), PCE, TCE, and VC concentrations were measured in the exhaled breath of 73 residents from both within and outside the plume areas. PCE was detected in 66 samples, TCE in 26 samples, and VC in 68 samples. Our results revealed a significant positive correlation between the concentrations of these compounds in exhaled breath and indoor air (Pearson correlation coefficients: PCE = 0.75, TCE = 0.71, and VC = 0.89). This study confirms the presence of PCE and its degradation products in exhaled breath in a community exposure investigation, demonstrating the potential of using exhaled breath analysis in monitoring exposure to environmental contaminants. Significant challenges remain for the remediation of chlorinated-solvent plumes in groundwater, such as trichloroethene (TCE) and tetrachloroethene (PCE). A novel slow-release permanganate gel (SRP-G) technique may show promise for the in-situ treatment (remediation) of chlorinated contaminant plumes in groundwater. A series of laboratory experiments were conducted to characterize the primary physical factors that influence SRP-G gelation processes to optimize SRP-G performance for plume treatment. Specifically, experiments were conducted to quantify gel zeta potential, particle size distribution, and viscosity to determine SRP-G gelation characteristics and processes. These experiments tested various concentrations of two SRP-G amendment solutions (NaMnO 4 and KMnO 4 ) prepared with 30-wt.% and 50-wt.% colloidal silica to determine such influences on zeta potential, particle size distribution, and viscosity. The results of this study show that SRP-G solutions with low zeta potential and relatively high pH favor more rapid SRP-G gelation. The concomitant interaction of the predominantly negatively charged colloidal silica particles and the positively charged dissociated cations (Na + and K + ) in the SRP-G solution had the effect of stabilizing charge imbalance via attraction of particles and thereby inducing a greater influence on the gelation process. Gel particle size distribution and changes in viscosity had a significant influence on SRP-G solution gelation. The addition of permanganate (NaMnO 4 or KMnO 4 ) increased the average particle size distribution and the viscosity of the SRP-G solution and decreased the overall gelation time. SRP-G amendments (NaMnO 4 or KMnO 4 ) prepared with 50-wt.% colloidal silica showed more effective gelation (and reduced gelation time) compared to SRP-G amendments prepared with 30-wt.% colloidal silica. This study aims to develop and validate a comprehensive method for assessing ecological disturbances in groundwater ecosystems caused by tetrachloroethylene (PCE) contamination, utilizing flow cytometry (FCM) fingerprint approach. We hypothesized that the ecological disturbance resulting from PCE contamination would exhibit 'press disturbance', persisting over extended periods, and inducing notable phenotypic differences in the microbial community compared to undisturbed groundwater. We collected 40 groundwater samples from industrial district with a history of over twenty years of PCE contamination, along with 56 control groundwater from the national surveillance groundwater system. FCM revealed significant alterations in the phenotypic diversity of microbial communities in PCE-contaminated groundwater, particularly during the dry season. The presence of specific dechlorinating bacteria (Dehalococcoides, Dehalogenimonas, and Geobacter) and their syntrophic partners was identified as an indicator of contamination. Phenotypic diversity measures provided clearer and more direct reflections of contamination impact compared to taxonomic diversity measures. This study establishes FCM fingerprinting as a simple, robust, and accurate method for evaluating ecological disturbances, with potential applications in early warning systems and continuous monitoring of groundwater contamination. The residual amount of halogenated solvents in olive oil is an important indicator of its quality. The National Olive Oil Quality Standard GB/T 23347-2021 states that the residual amount of individual halogenated solvents in olive oil should be ≤0.1 mg/kg and that the total residual amount of halogenated solvents should be ≤0.2 mg/kg. COI/T.20/Doc. No. 8-1990, which was published by the International Olive Council, describes the standard method used for the determination of halogenated solvents in olive oil. Unfortunately, this method is cumbersome, has poor repeatability and low automation, and is unsuitable for the detection and analysis of residual halogenated solvents in large quantities of olive oil. At present, no national standard method for determining residual halogenated solvents in olive oil is available in China. Thus, developing simple, efficient, accurate, and stable methods for the determination of residual halogenated solvents in olive oil is imperative. In this paper, a method based on automatic headspace gas chromatography was established for the determination of residual halogenated solvents, namely, chloroform, carbon tetrachloride, 1,1,1-trichloroethane, dibromochloromethane, tetrachloroethylene, and bromoform, in olive oil. The samples were processed as follows. After mixing, 2.00 g (accurate to 0.01 g) of the olive oil sample was added into a 20 mL headspace injection bottle and immediately sealed for headspace gas chromatography analysis. Blank virgin olive oil was used to prepare a standard working solution and the external standard method for quantification. The solvents used in the preparation of halogenated solvent standard intermediates were investigated and methanol was selected as a replacement for N , N -dimethylacetamide to prepare a halogenated solvent standard intermediate owing to its safety. The effects of different injection times (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 s), equilibration temperatures (60, 70, 80, 90, 100, 110, 120 ℃), and equilibration times (4, 5, 8, 10, 20, 30, 40 min) of the headspace sampler on the detection of the residual amounts of the six halogenated solvents were investigated. The optimal injection time and equilibration temperature were 3 s and 90 ℃, respectively. The method demonstrated good analytical performance for the six halogenated solvents when the equilibration time was 30 min. A methodological study was conducted on the optimized method, and the results showed that the six halogenated solvents exhibited good linear relationships in the range of 0.002-0.200 mg/kg, with correlation coefficients of ≥0.9991. The limits of detection (LODs) and quantification (LOQs) of 1,1,1-trichloroethane and bromoform were 0.0006 and 0.002 mg/kg, respectively. The LODs and LOQs of chloroform, carbon tetrachloride, dibromochloromethane, and tetrachloroethylene were 0.0003 and 0.001 mg/kg, respectively. The average recoveries under different spiked levels were 85.53%-115.93%, and the relative standard deviations ( n =6) were 1.11%-8.48%. The established method was used to analyze 13 olive oil samples available in the market. Although no halogenated solvents were detected in these samples, a limited number of samples does not represent all olive oils. Hence, monitoring residual halogenated solvents in olive oil remains necessary for its safe consumption. The LOQs of the method for the six halogenated solvents were significantly lower than that of the COI/T.20/Doc. No. 8-1990 standard method (0.02 mg/kg). In addition, the developed method can be conducted under short operation times with high precision and degree of automation as well as good accuracy. Thus, the proposed method is suitable for the determination and analysis of the residues of the six halogenated solvents in large batches of olive oil samples.

Background: The involvement of Perchloroethylene (PCE) in the development of autoimmune diseases has been reported. However, few studies investigated immunotoxicity in PCE-exposed workers., Objective: To study changes in the oxidative stress and cytokine profile of young female dry-cleaning workers exposed to PCE., Methods: Thirty-eight exposed workers and 38 unexposed controls were recruited. All the participants were young nonsmoker females. Individual interviews were conducted by a physician. Blood samples were collected and hematological tests were performed by an automated Coulter Counter. Plasma PCE levels were determined using gas chromatography/flame ionization detection. Plasma total antioxidant capacity (TAC), Catalase (CAT), Superoxide dismutase (SOD), and Malondialdehyde (MDA) levels were measured using the colorimetric method. The levels of plasma cytokines interleukin-1β (IL-1β), IL-2, IL-4, IL-6, IL-8, tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and interferon-γ (IFN-γ) were measured by commercially kits., Results: The levels of plasma PCE averaged 561±96 ng/ml in the exposed group compared with 1.3±0.5 ng/ml in the controls. The hematological tests failed to find abnormalities in the exposed workers. Exposed workers presented significantly increased plasma levels of MDA, SOD and CAT. There were no significant differences between the two groups for level of plasma TAC. Significantly increased plasma IL-1β and TNF-α and decreased IL-2 and IL-8 levels were seen in the exposed workers. There were no significant differences between the two groups for IL-4, IL-6, and IFN-γ., Conclusion: PCE exposure resulted in changed cytokine profile in dry-cleaning workers, suggesting the potential immunotoxicity of PCE at low exposure levels.

Background: The laundry and dry cleaning industries are critical for maintaining cleanliness and hygiene in our daily lives. However, they have also been identified as sources of hazardous chemical exposure for workers, leading to potentially severe health implications. Despite mounting evidence that solvents like perchloroethylene and trichloroethylene are carcinogenic, they remain commonly used in the industry. Additionally, while alternative solvents are increasingly being utilized in response to indications of adverse health and environmental effects, there remains a significant gap in our understanding of the potential risks associated with exposure to these new agents., Methods: This study aims to identify gaps in the literature concerning worker exposure to contemporary toxic chemicals in the laundry and dry cleaning industry and their associated carcinogenic risks. A scoping review of peer-reviewed publications from 2012 to 2022 was conducted to achieve this objective, focusing on studies that detailed chemical exposures, sampling methods, and workers within the laundry and dry cleaning sector., Results: In this scoping review, 12 relevant papers were assessed. A majority (66%) examined perchloroethylene exposure, with one notable finding revealing that biomarkers from dry cleaners had significant micronuclei frequency and DNA damage, even when exposed to PCE at levels below occupational exposure limits. Similarly, another study supported these results, finding an increase in early DNA damage among exposed workers. Separate studies on TCE and benzene presented varied exposure levels and health risks, raising concern due to their IARC Group 1 carcinogen classification. Information on alternative solvents was limited, highlighting gaps in health outcome data, exposure guidelines, and carcinogenic classifications., Conclusion: Research on health outcomes, specifically carcinogenicity from solvent exposure in dry cleaning, is limited, with 66% of studies not monitoring health implications, particularly for emerging solvents. Further, findings indicated potential DNA damage from perchloroethylene, even below set occupational limits, emphasizing the need to reevaluate safety limits. As alternative solvents like butylal and high-flashpoint hydrocarbons become more prevalent, investigations into the effects of their exposure are necessary to safeguard workers' health. There are clear indoor air pollution sources of trichloroethylene and tetrachloroethylene. A large number of epidemiological evidence has confirmed their carcinogenic toxicity and non-carcinogenic toxicity. Several countries and international organizations have paid attention to indoor air trichloroethylene and tetrachloroethylene. It has been also assessed that there should be certain potential health risk of indoor air trichloroethylene and tetrachloroethylene in China. Based on the latest research results of health risk assessment of indoor air trichloroethylene and tetrachloroethylene, the "Standards for indoor air quality (GB/T 18883-2022)" added trichloroethylene and tetrachloroethylene as indicators. The index limit of trichloroethylene is 6 μg/m 3 for an 8-hour average concentration. The index limit of tetrachloroethylene is 120 μg/m 3 for an 8-hour average concentration. The technical contents related to the determination of the standard limits of trichloroethylene and tetrachloroethylene in indoor air were analyzed and discussed, including the sources, the exposure, the health effects, the determination of the limit values, and the recommendations for standard implementation. It also proposed recommendations for the implementation of"Standards for indoor air quality (GB/T 18883-2022)".

Fractional wettability is common in the dense non-aqueous phase liquids (DNAPL) contaminated sites. However, it is still unclear how fractional wettability affects surfactant-enhanced DNAPL immiscible mobilization in saturated porous media. The macro-contact angle of the fractional wettability media was measured. The results of column experiments showed that the entrapped tetrachloroethene (PCE) saturations after sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS) flooding were lower in the media where NAPL-wet sand was present compared with those in water-wet media. In the media which contained 25% octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS)-treated sand, the entrapped PCE saturations decreased to the minimum, and the decrease was much larger in fine sand media. The SDBS-enhanced PCE recoveries were jointly affected by fractional wettability, particle size, and interfacial tension (IFT). When NAPL-wet sand was present and SDBS concentration was just 0.125 g⋅L -1 , the SDBS-enhanced PCE recoveries increased significantly. As the SDBS concentration continues to increase to 0.5 g⋅L -1 , they only increased slightly. In the fine sand media, the SDBS-enhanced PCE recoveries were higher, and they increased more obviously with the increase of NAPL-wet sand fractions. The influence weight of fractional wettability on SDBS-enhanced PCE recoveries was the largest (47.09%) under the experimental conditions. These findings indicate that it is important to consider fractional wettability characteristics when establishing a DNAPL immiscible mobilization strategy, because it is not sufficient to consider only IFT reduction, especially in media with finer pore structures., (© 2022. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are a group of organic compounds that have a molecular structure containing carbon and their chemical properties allow them to be easily converted to steam and gas and remain for a long period of time and have diverse effects on the environment. The purpose of this study is determination of the concentration of VOCs such as alachlor, anthracene, benzene, bromoform, chloroform, heptachlor, isophorone, tetrachloroethylene, γ -chlordane, toluene, etc. in water matrices. The results showed that among studies conducted on VOCs, the concentration of tetrachloroethylene, m,p-xylene, and toluene were at the top in water matrices, and the lowest average concentrations were found in chloroform, anthracene, and butyl benzyl phthalate. In terms of VOC concentrations in water matrices, China was the most polluted country. Moreover, the data analysis indicated that China was the only country with carcinogenic risk. Rationale: The recent development of reliable GC/qMS methods for δ 37 Cl compound-specific stable isotope analysis (CSIA) paves the way for dual carbon-chlorine isotope analysis of chlorinated ethenes and thus allows deeper insights into underlying transformation processes/mechanisms. A two-point calibration is indispensable for the precise and correct conversion of raw data to the international δ 37 Cl SMOC scale. The currently available calibration standards for tetrachloroethylene (PCE) span only a very narrow range from -2.52‰ (EIL2) to +0.29‰ (EIL1), which is considerably smaller than observed δ 37 Cl isotope enrichment in (bio-)transformation studies (up to 12‰)., Methods: We describe the preparation and evaluation of a new 37 Cl-enriched PCE standard to avoid bias in δ 37 Cl CSIA arising from extrapolation beyond the calibration range. The preparation comprised: (i) partial PCE reduction by zero-valent zinc in a system of PCE, ethanol (initial volume ratio 3/5) and trace amounts of water followed by (ii) liquid-liquid extraction and (iii) a subsequent fractional distillation to purify the 37 Cl-enriched PCE., Results: The obtained PCE (PCE enriched ) showed a purity of 98.8% (mole fraction) and a δ 37 Cl SMOC value of +10.8 ± 0.5‰. The evaluation of an experimental dataset with and without extrapolation showed no significant variation., Conclusions: The new PCE standard (PCE enriched ) expands the calibration range to 13.3‰ (previously 2.8‰) and thus prevents potential bias introduced by extrapolation beyond the calibration range., (© 2022 The Authors. The structural stability of novel ζ-arsenene nanotubes (ζ-AsNT) is studied based on the density functional theory framework and is used as a base material for the detection of trichloroethylene and tetrachloroethylene vapours. The formation energy of ζ-AsNT is found to be -4.321 eV/atom and the energy band gap is 0.304 eV. Besides, the changes in the electronic properties of ζ-AsNT are explored with regard to the projected density of states, charge transfer, and electron density difference. The bandgap energy decreases for hollow site orientation to 0.205 and 0.204 eV for trichloroethylene and tetrachloroethylene vapours and increases for the valley and top site orientations. The adsorption energies were maximum for the valley site orientation of target molecules onto ζ-AsNT (01.165 and -1.513 eV for trichloroethylene and tetrachloroethylene, respectively). Moreover, the target vapours trichloroethylene and tetrachloroethylene are physisorbed on ζ-AsNT enabling the recycling of base substrate for continuous operation. The average energy gap changes vary from 18 to 32.9% depending on adsorption sites. The variation in the average energy gap owing to adsorption of trichloroethylene and tetrachloroethylene indicates the chemo-sensing nature of ζ-AsNT. Colloidal biliquid aphron (CBLA) is a strong density modifier for dense nonaqueous phase liquids (DNAPLs). However, the underlying mechanisms responsible for density modification and displacement is not yet clear. Here, a series of batch column and sandbox experiments were conducted to achieve substantial removal and irreversible density reduction of tetrachloroethylene (PCE). The mass of PCE retained in the column and sandbox was less than 1% under suitable injection conditions, and the density of PCE in the effluent was less than that of water (fluctuated in the range of 0.74-0.96 g/cm 3 ). The displacement process was controlled by the high viscosity ratio of CBLA to PCE (52.3). The emulsified and dissolved phase of PCE formed after reaction with CBLA, and the light nonaqueous phase liquid (LNAPL) phase formed after injecting demulsifier solution. The phase analysis played a significant role in monitoring the changes in concentration and density of PCE. The density-modification displacement technique using CBLA reduced the mass of residual PCE by a factor of 165 compared to surfactant flushing, and there was no risk of downward migration of PCE. Introduction: Previous research has observed relationships between higher prenatal exposure to air pollutants and neurodevelopmental and academic outcomes later in childhood. Identifying intermediate outcomes mediating this relationship would inform prevention and intervention efforts. We aimed to investigate if previously observed associations between prenatal exposure to common urban air pollutants, diesel and perchloroethylene, and performance on third grade standardized tests were mediated through increased risk of preterm birth., Methods: Data from the 1994-1998 birth cohorts within the New York City Longitudinal Study of Early Development were included in this analysis. Exposure was determined by linking the mother's residence at the time of delivery to the U.S. EPA's 1996 National Air Toxic Assessment of estimated ambient concentrations of diesel and perchloroethylene. Children's third grade standardized math and language tests were used as the markers for academic achievement. Missing data on covariates were imputed, while participants with missing information on gestational age and test scores were excluded. Linear regression models and causal mediation analysis were used to examine potential mediation by preterm birth., Results: In total, 187,723 and 196,122 participants were included in language and math analyses, respectively. Children with exposure to the fourth quartile of diesel or perchloroethylene had approximately 0.03 (95%CI: 0.02, 0.04) lower math z-scores when compared to individuals with exposure in the first quartile, although there was no consistent decreasing trend in math z-scores over increasing quartiles of diesel or perchloroethylene. We did not find evidence of mediation by preterm birth or exposure-mediator interaction in our models., Conclusion: We did not find evidence that observed relationships between exposure to common urban air pollutants and test z-scores in childhood were mediated through an increased risk of preterm birth. Evaluation of the compounds and metabolites, and studying their side effects in the workplace is essential. This study was designed to evaluate the exposure of dry  cleaning workers to perchloroethylene (PEC), and its liver and kidney damage, and oxidative stress in B-lymphocytes isolated from the workers. Blood samples were evaluated for liver (alanine transaminase [ALT] and aspartate transaminase [AST]) and kidney (BUN and creatinine) markers. For measurement of PEC, exhaled, personal, and ambient air samples were collected and analyzed gas chromatography (GC-FID) through the NIOSH 1003 and 3704 methods. Also, the parameters of oxidative stress including the level of reactive oxygen species (ROS), glutathione (GSH), oxidized glutathione (GSSG), and lipid peroxidation (LPO) in B-lymphocytes were evaluated. The results showed that the levels of liver enzymes ALT and AST in dry cleaning workers are higher than in the control group. The personal exposure levels and exhaled air concentration of PEC in dry cleaning workers were above the recommended national occupational exposure limits (OELs) and the biological exposure index (BEI). The levels of ROS, LPO, and GSSG in B-lymphocytes from the dry cleaning workers are higher than the control group, and the levels of GSH in dry cleaning workers are lower. Martinsville, Indiana overlays four groundwater contamination plumes, including a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)-designated Superfund site. The primary contaminants are tetrachloroethylene (PCE), trichloroethylene (TCE), and other volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Martinsville represents many similar communities facing the challenge of groundwater and soil contamination and vapor intrusion, where residents are often frustrated by the lack of help in understanding and addressing the problem. The objective of this study was to evaluate PCE in exhaled breath to identify and quantify exposure to PCE and to explore the extent and level of PCE exposure among community residents. We measured chlorinated VOCs in exhaled breath samples from 38 healthy individuals who lived either in a contamination area or outside any plume area. We also measured VOCs in indoor air and tap water samples collected from 10 homes. PCE was detected in all exhaled breath samples (mean: 6.6 μg/m 3 ; range: 1.9-44 μg/m 3 ) and tap water samples (mean: 0.74 μg/L; range: 0.39-0.92 μg/L). PCE was detected in six of nine (66%) homes with air concentrations ranging from 1.6 to 70 μg/m 3 , exceeding the EPA action level of 42 μg/m 3 . We did not detect TCE or any other chlorinated VOCs in these samples. PCE exposure occurred among individuals living on the EPA Superfund site, as well as among those living on other plume sites and those living outside any known plumes. Preventive measures should focus on identifying highly exposed groups and reducing their exposures, followed by addressing moderately elevated exposures in the community. Background: Communities in Cape Cod, Massachusetts were exposed to tetrachloroethylene (PCE) through contaminated drinking water from 1969 to 1983. PCE exposure during adulthood has well-established neurotoxic effects; however, long-term impacts stemming from early life exposure, especially adverse effects on sleep quality, are not well understood., Methods: The present analysis was based on data from the Cape Cod Health Study, a retrospective cohort study of the long-term neurotoxic impacts of early-life exposure to PCE-contaminated drinking water. Exposure to PCE-contaminated water was estimated using a validated leaching and transport model. Measures of sleep quality were obtained from self-administered questionnaires. Generalized estimating equations were used to generate risk ratios and 95% confidence intervals to estimate the association between early-life PCE exposure and sleep quality among 604 participants., Results: Compared to unexposed participants, any PCE exposure during early life was associated with 1.57 times the risk of reporting breathing pauses during sleep (95% CI 0.92-2.68). Low-level exposure to PCE was associated with 1.50 times the risk of reporting sleep apnea or other sleep disorders (95% CI 0.78-2.89), while high levels of exposure had comparable risk compared to no exposure (RR = 0.94, 95% CI 0.50-1.79). Weak or no associations were observed for other sleep quality outcomes. In stratified analyses participants with mental illness and/or substance use disorder had increased risk ratios for short sleep duration associated with PCE exposure., Conclusion: These findings suggest that early-life exposure to PCE may be associated with a moderate increase in the risk of reporting breathing pauses during sleep in adulthood and that a history of mental illness and/or substance use disorder may exacerbate the risk of short sleep duration., (© 2022. A site in mid-western Sweden contaminated with chlorinated solvents originating from a previous dry cleaning facility, was investigated using conventional groundwater analysis combined with compound-specific isotope data of carbon, microbial DNA analysis, and geoelectrical tomography techniques. We show the value of this multidisciplinary approach, as the different results supported each interpretation, and show where natural degradation occurs at the site. The zone where natural degradation occurred was identified in the transition between two geological units, where the change in hydraulic conductivity may have facilitated biofilm formation and microbial activity. This observation was confirmed by all methods and the examination of the impact of geological conditions on the biotransformation process was facilitated by the unique combination of the applied methods. There is thus significant benefit from deploying an extended array of methods for these investigations, with the potential to reduce costs involved in remediation of contaminated sediment and groundwater.

This work focuses on the development of electro-absorption and photoelectro-absorption technologies to treat gases produced by a synthetic waste containing the highly volatile perchloroethylene (PCE). To do this, a packed absorption column coupled with a UV lamp and an undivided electrooxidation cell was used. Firstly, it was confirmed that the absorption in a packed column is a viable method to achieve retention of PCE into an absorbent-electrolyte liquid. It was observed that PCE does not only absorb but it was also transformed into phosgene and other by-products. Later, it was confirmed that the electro-absorption process influenced the PCE degradation, favoring the transformation of phosgene into final products. Opposite to what is expected, carbon dioxide is not the main product obtained, but carbon tetrachloride and trichloroacetic acid. Both species are also hazardous but their higher solubility in water opens possibilities for a successful and more environmental-friendly removal. The coupling with UV-irradiation has a negative impact on the degradation of phosgene. Finally, a reaction mechanism was proposed for the degradation of PCE based on the experimental observations. Results were not as expected during the planning of the experimental work but it is important to take in mind that PCE decomposition occurs in wet conditions, regardless of the applied technology, and this work is a first approach to try to solve the treatment problems associated to PCE gaseous waste flows in a realistic way.

Background: Between 1968 and 1983, public drinking water supplies of Cape Cod, Massachusetts were contaminated with the chlorinated solvent tetrachloroethylene (PCE). We previously found an affinity for risk-taking behaviors, including the use of illicit drugs, following prenatal and early childhood exposure to PCE. Using newly collected data, we investigated the risk of non-medical use of prescription drugs (NMUPD) following prenatal and early childhood PCE exposure., Methods: Participants were identified from a retrospective cohort study ("Cape Cod Health Study") via cross-matching birth certificates and water system data. The original self-administered questionnaire gathered data on demographics, work and medical history, and alcohol and illicit drug use from 618 individuals (363 exposed and 255 unexposed). The follow-up survey added questions on non-medical use of prescription pain relievers, tranquilizers, stimulants and sedatives. A validated leaching and transport model was used to estimate exposure to PCE exposure in drinking water., Results: There was a wide distribution of cumulative prenatal and early childhood PCE exposure levels (range: 0.04 g-3722.2 g). PCE exposed subjects had a 1.92-fold increase in risk of any non-medical use of prescription drugs [Adjusted RR: 1.92, (95% CI: 1.31, 2.83)]. Furthermore, the association followed a dose-response relationship where the risk of NMUPD was higher for those exposed to PCE levels greater than or equal the median level versus those exposed to levels less than the median [Adjusted RR: 2.05 (95% CI: 1.34, 3.15) vs. 1.83 (95% CI: 1.20, 2.79) (p-value for trend < 0.01)]. Additionally, we found moderate increases in risk by level of non-medical use (any non-medical use, non-medical use of 1 or more categories of prescription drugs, or 2+ categories) as well as by category of drug for pain relivers, stimulants and tranquilizers., Conclusion: We found that prenatal and early childhood exposure to PCE was associated with a moderate increase in the risk of NMUPD. Exposed subjects had dose-related increased risks of NMUPD of pain relievers, tranquilizers, and stimulants. This study has a number of limitations and is the first to report this association. Chlorinated volatile organic compounds, such as tetrachloroethylene (PCE), are the most commonly detected toxic contaminants in groundwater. In this study, the performance of PCE removal by a microbial consortium combined with nZVI modified by layered double hydroxide (nZVI-LDH) was evaluated. The enriched PCE-degrading consortium consisted of 44.49% Clostridium and other potential PCE degraders, and 0.5-2.5 mg/L PCE was completely biodegraded within 4 days. The characterization of nZVI-LDH indicated that LDH was coated on the surfaces of nZVI particles with an increased surface area. The PCE removal kinetics by nZVI-LDH was well described by a second-order model, and the removal rate constant of nZVI-LDH was 0.12 L h/mg, higher than that of native nZVI (0.02 L h/mg). Interestingly, the presence of Cu 2+ improved the removal efficiency of PCE by nZVI-LDH, owing to its role as a catalyst or medium for charge transfer during reduction. Removal of PCE was enhanced by coupling the PCE-degrading consortium and nZVI-LDH. The initial removal of PCE was mainly dominated by the abiotic degradation and adsorption of nZVI-LDH, and biodegradation then played a major role in the exhaustion of nZVI-LDH. Electrochemical removal of chlorinated ethenes in groundwater plumes may potentially overcome some of the challenges faced by current remediation technologies. So far, studies have been conducted in simplified settings of synthetic groundwater and inert porous matrices. This study is a stepwise investigation of the influence of field-extracted groundwater, sandy sediment and groundwater aquifer temperatures on the removal of an aged partially degraded contamination of tetrachloroethylene (PCE) at a typical groundwater flow rate. The aim is to assess the potential for applying electrochemistry at contaminated sites. At a constant current of 120 mA, pH and conductivity were unaffected downgradient the electrochemical zone. Major groundwater species were reduced and oxidized. Some minerals deposited, others dissolved. Hydrogen peroxide, a strong oxidant, was formed in levels up to 5 mg L -1 with a limited distribution into the sandy sediment. Trichloromethane was formed, supposedly by oxidation of organic matter in the sandy sediment in the presence of chloride. The more realistic the settings, the higher the PCE removal, bringing concentrations down to 7.8 ± 2.3 μg L -1 . A complete removal of trichloroethylene and cis-1,2-dichloroethylene was obtained. Chlorinated solvents like trichloroethylene (TCE) and tetrachloroethylene (PCE) are prevalent groundwater contaminants being detected more than half of the Superfund Sites. They are introduced into the subsurface due to improper disposal of hazardous wastes containing these chlorinated dense non-aqueous phase liquids (DNAPL). DNAPL wastes sink in the subsurface and form pools on clay layers. Further transport into the underlying clay layer is dominated by diffusion due to the low permeability of these soils and results in accumulation of contaminants therein overtime through diffusion. However, field evidence reported that mass storage of solvents in such zones was higher than what can be attributed to simple diffusion. To evaluate this finding, mass storage of TCE in a hypothetical aquitard after 30 years of diffusion was calculated. The diffusion coefficient reported in the field study resulted in mass storage of 137.7 g in this hypothetical aquitard whereas the mass calculated using the measured diffusion coefficient of TCE from pure solvent into water-saturated clayey soil was 25-65% of it (35.0-89.4 g). The calculated mass storage was even lower (8.2 g) if the measured diffusion coefficient of TCE from DNAPL waste into waste-contacted soil was used. So, mass of TCE accumulated through sole diffusion was not able to explain the one observed in the field. This excess mass in the field might be the mass of DNAPL entered into the cracks which were reported to form in clay layers as a result of the direct contact between water saturated clay and DNAPL waste. Mass of TCE in the cracks was calculated using reported average crack size and an assumed crack depth, and it appeared that cracks filled with DNAPL could increase the stored mass up to a minimum of 334 g which could easily account for the enhanced mass storage observed in the field., Competing Interests: Declaration of Competing Interest None, (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier B.V. In Japan, the use of methanol, trichloroethylene, and tetrachloroethylene in aerosol household products is banned under the Act on the Control of Household Products Containing Harmful Substances. As the official analytical methods for testing for these substances have not been revised for over 35 years, several issues have been pointed out. Thus, we developed a new method to revise the official method in our previous study. In this study, validation of the proposed method for detecting the target substances was conducted using two aerosol-product samples (A and B), which contained methanol, trichloroethylene, and tetrachloroethylene. Sample A comprised regulated values of these compounds, while sample B comprised one-tenth of the regulated amounts. They also contained several volatile compounds that served as interfering substances. Subsequently, the samples were analyzed using head space/gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, and it was confirmed that the three target substances were separated from the other chemicals on chromatograms. Validation tests were conducted at seven laboratories to evaluate the proposed method using the prepared samples. In one laboratory, the recovery of trichloroethylene and tetrachloroethylene in sample B was slightly higher at 120%, while the recoveries obtained from the other tests were between 70% and 120%. Relative standard deviation at each laboratory was less than 10%. Furthermore, the relative standard deviations between the validation tests with respect to each chemical were less than 15%. Therefore, the method validated in this study was considered to be effective as a revised method for testing for methanol, trichloroethylene, and trichloroethylene in household aerosol products.

Two of the most prevalent Superfund-site contaminants are carcinogenic solvents PCE (perchloroethylene) and TCE (trichloroethylene). Because their cleanup is difficult and costly, remediators have repeatedly falsified site-cleanup data, as Tetra Tech apparently did recently in San Francisco. Especially for difficult-to-remediate toxins, this paper hypothesizes that scientific misrepresentations occur in toxic-site assessments, before remediation even begins. To begin to test this hypothesis, the paper (1) defines scientific-data audits (assessing whether published conclusions contradict source data), (2) performs a preliminary scientific-data audit of toxic-site assessments by consultants Ninyo and Moore for developer Trammell Crow. Trammel Crow wants to build 550 apartments on an unremediated Pasadena, California site - once a premier US Navy weapons-testing/development facility. The paper (3) examines four key Ninyo-and-Moore conclusions, that removing only localized metals-hotspots will (3.1) remediate TCE/PCE; (3.2) leave low levels of them; (3.3) clean the northern half of soil, making it usable for grading, and (3.4) ensure site residents have lifetime cancer risks no greater than 1 in 3,000. The paper (4) shows that source data contradict all four conclusions. After summarizing the benefits of routine, independent, scientific-data audits (RISDA), the paper (5) argues that, if these results are generalizable, RISDA might help prevent questionable toxic-site assessments, especially those of expensive-to-remediate toxins like PCE/TCE.

ISCO using activated sodium persulphate is a widely used technology for treating chlorinated solvent source zones. In sensitive areas, however, high groundwater sulphate concentrations following treatment may be a drawback. In situ biogeochemical transformation, a technology that degrades contaminants via reduced iron minerals formed by microbial activity, offers a potential solution for such sites, the bioreduction of sulphate and production of iron sulphides that abiotically degrade chlorinated ethenes acting as a secondary technology following ISCO. This study assesses this approach in the field using hydrochemical and molecular tools, solid phase analysis and geochemical modelling. Following a neutralisation and bioaugmentation, favourable conditions for iron- and sulphate-reducers were created, resulting in a remarkable increase in their relative abundance. The abundance of dechlorinating bacteria (Dehalococcoides mccartyi, Dehalobacter sp. and Desulfitobacterium spp.) remained low throughout this process. Recent data suggest a general trend in decreased occupational exposure to perchlorethylene (PCE) in the dry-cleaning sector. The aims of this study were to confirm this trend to lower exposure levels in a group of Italian dry cleaners and to evaluate the current occupational PCE exposure in these works using noninvasive biological indices. Environmental exposure was assessed by personal sampling in 60 operators working in 21 dry cleaning shops in North Italy. PCE in the exhaled alveolar air (PCE alv ), urinary concentration of PCE and of trichloroacetic acid (TCA) (PCE u and TCA u respectively), were measured as biological exposure indices. Median PCE environmental concentration in the whole sample was 10.6 mg/m 3 (i.e., less than the 25% of the levels measured in the same area in a previous study). All values were less than 10% of the occupational limits. PCE u measured in samples collected at the end of the work shift resulted the biological markers having the strongest correlation with environmental PCE (r = 0.81). PCE alv also resulted in a high correlation (r = 0.66), while a lower correlation was found for TCA u measured at the end shift (r = 0.32). According to our results, PCE u can be proposed as a valid, noninvasive, and easily reliable exposure index to evaluate PCE exposure at the low levels currently observed in dry cleaners, therefore representing a promising alternative to invasive blood sample collections needed to determine PCE blood concentration.

The degradation of trichloroethylene (TCE) and tetrachloroethylene (PCE), in incubations where ammonium was oxidized while iron was being reduced indicates that these compounds can be degraded during the Feammox process by Acidimicrobiaceae sp. A6 (ATCC, PTA-122488). None of these compounds were degraded in incubations to which no ammonium was added, indicating that they were degraded during the oxidation of ammonium. Degradation of TCE and PCE (ranging between 32% and 55%) was observed in incubations with a pure Acidimicrobiaceae sp. A6 culture as well as an Acidimicrobiaceae sp. A6 enrichment culture over a 2-week period. In addition to these batch studies, a column study, with a 5-h hydraulic residence time, was conducted contrasting the degradation of TCE in iron-rich soil columns that were either seeded with a pure or an enrichment culture of Acidimicrobiaceae sp. A6 to achieve ammonium oxidation under iron reduction, and a control column that was initially not seeded and later seeded with Geobacter metallireducens. While there was ∼22% TCE removal in the columns seeded with Acidimicrobiaceae sp. A6, there was no removal in the unseeded column or the column seeded with G. metallireducens which was being operated under iron reducing conditions. Feammox is an anoxic process that requires acidic conditions. Hence, these results indicate that this process might be harnessed where other bioremediation strategies are difficult, since many require neutral or alkaline conditions, and supplying ammonium to an anoxic aquifer is relatively easy, since there are not many processes that will oxidize ammonium in the absence of dissolved oxygen., (Copyright © 2019 The Authors. The bioremediation potential of an aquifer contaminated with tetrachloroethene (PCE) was assessed by combining hydrogeochemical data of the site, microcosm studies, metabolites concentrations, compound specific-stable carbon isotope analysis and the identification of selected reductive dechlorination biomarker genes. The characterization of the site through 10 monitoring wells evidenced that leaked PCE was transformed to TCE and cis-DCE via hydrogenolysis. Carbon isotopic mass balance of chlorinated ethenes pointed to two distinct sources of contamination and discarded relevant alternate degradation pathways in the aquifer. Application of specific-genus primers targeting Dehalococcoides mccartyi species and the vinyl chloride-to-ethene reductive dehalogenase vcrA indicated the presence of autochthonous bacteria capable of the complete dechlorination of PCE. The observed cis-DCE stall was consistent with the aquifer geochemistry (positive redox potentials; presence of dissolved oxygen, nitrate, and sulphate; absence of ferrous iron), which was thermodynamically favourable to dechlorinate highly chlorinated ethenes but required lower redox potentials to evolve beyond cis-DCE to the innocuous end product ethene. Accordingly, the addition of lactate or a mixture of ethanol plus methanol as electron donor sources in parallel field-derived anoxic microcosms accelerated dechlorination of PCE and passed cis-DCE up to ethene, unlike the controls (without amendments, representative of field natural attenuation). Lactate fermentation produced acetate at near-stoichiometric amounts. Background: Residents of Massachusetts and Rhode Island were exposed to tetrachloroethylene-contaminated drinking water from 1968 through the early 1990s when it leached from the vinyl lining of asbestos cement water distribution pipes. While occupational exposure to solvents during pregnancy has consistently been linked to an increased risk of certain birth defects, mixed results have been observed for environmental sources of exposure, including contaminated drinking water. The present case-control study was undertaken to examine further the association between prenatal exposure to tetrachloroethylene-contaminated drinking water and the risk of central nervous system defects, oral clefts and hypospadias., Methods: Cases were comprised of live- and stillborn infants delivered between 1968 and 1995 to mothers who resided in 28 Massachusetts and Rhode Island cities and towns with some PCE-contaminated water supplies. Infants with central nervous system defects (N = 268), oral clefts (N = 112) and hypospadias (N = 94) were included. Controls were randomly selected live-born, non-malformed infants who were delivered during the same period and geographic area as cases (N = 771). Vital records and self-administered questionnaires were used to gather identifying information, birth defect diagnoses, and other relevant data. PCE exposure during the first trimester was estimated using water distribution system modeling software that incorporated a leaching and transport model. Prenatal PCE exposure was dichotomized as "high" or "low" exposure at the level corresponding to an estimated average concentration of 40 μg/L, the criterion for remediation when PCE contamination was discovered in 1980., Results: Mothers with "high" levels of exposure to PCE-contaminated drinking water during the first trimester (> 40 μg/L) had increased odds of having a child with spina bifida (OR: 2.0, 95% CI: 0.8-5.4), cleft lip with or without cleft palate (OR: 3.8, 95% CI: 1.2-12.3) and hypospadias (OR: 2.1, 95% CI:0.5-8.3). No increases in the odds of other defects were observed in relation to "high" exposure levels., Conclusions: The results of the present study suggest that mothers with "high" PCE exposure levels during the first trimester have increased odds of having a child with spina bifida, cleft lip with or without cleft palate, and hypospadias. These findings support several prior studies that observed an increased risk of selected birth defects following prenatal exposure to solvents in occupational and environmental settings. Even though PCE contamination from vinyl lined pipes was remediated many years ago, it remains a widespread contaminant across the U.S and so environmental regulations must be guided by a precautionary perspective that safeguards pregnant women and their offspring.

Background: Perchloroethylene (PERC) is a widely spread cleaning solvent, used in nearly all dry-cleaning facilities. It has been declared as "probable human carcinogen" by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) due to its hazardous and toxic effects on human health. The study aimed at assessing the exposure of PERC among dry-cleaning workers at four different dry-cleaning facilities in the UAE., Methods: The four dry-cleaning facilities, using PERC in one of the cities of the UAE, were selected. Draeger perchloroethylene 10/b detector tubes along with a Draeger accuro pump were used to estimate the levels of PERC exposure in three main selected positions in each of the facilities., Results: The results showed that the second selected position had the highest amounts of PERC exposure above the international and local standards in 3 out of 4 selected facilities. The workers at position 2, who were not using any of the provided personal protective equipment, were at the highest risk of developing PERC-related health problems., Conclusion: It is important to install local exhaust ventilation systems and monitoring devices of PERC concentrations in these facilities, along with raising the awareness of workers about the health effects of PERC and the importance of using personal protective equipment (PPE) while performing their job.

After the injection of Carbo-Iron® into an aquifer contaminated with tetrachloroethene (PCE), combined chemical and microbiological contaminant degradation processes were found in a long-term study of the field site in Lower Saxony (Germany). The applied composite material Carbo-Iron, which consists of colloidal activated carbon and embedded nanoscale zero-valent iron (ZVI) structures, functioned as intended: accumulating the pollutants and promoting their reductive dechlorination. Furthermore, the particles decreased the redox potential of the groundwater due to their reaction with oxygen and to the ZVI-corrosion-induced formation of molecular hydrogen up to 190 days after the injection, the latter promoting sulphate-reducing conditions. The emergence of cis-dichloroethene (cis-DCE), which was only found in trace quantities before the injection of Carbo-Iron, together with the presence of organisms related to Sulfospirillum multivorans, Desulfitobacterium spp. and Dehalococcoides mccartyi, indicate that Carbo-Iron is also able to support microbial degradation of PCE. However, cis-DCE did not accumulate in the present case study, although it is often observed at sites with active microbial dechlorination. The results of compound-specific isotope analysis in combination with pyrosequencing data suggested the oxidative degradation of cis-DCE by an organism related to Polaromonas sp. strain JS666. Consequently, the formation of the carcinogenic degradation intermediate vinyl chloride was circumvented. Overall, the moderate and slow change of environmental conditions mediated by Carbo-Iron not only supported organohalide-respiring bacteria, but also created the basis for a subsequent microbial oxidation step., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier B.V. The streambed point velocity probe (SBPVP) measures in situ groundwater velocities at the groundwater-surface water interface without reliance on hydraulic conductivity, porosity, or hydraulic gradient information. The tool operates on the basis of a mini-tracer test that occurs on the probe surface. The SBPVP was used in a meander of the Grindsted Å (stream), Denmark, to determine the distribution of flow through the streambed. These data were used to calculate the contaminant mass discharge of chlorinated ethenes into the stream. SBPVP data were compared with velocities estimated from hydraulic head and temperature gradient data collected at similar scales. Spatial relationships of water flow through the streambed were found to be similar by all three methods, and indicated a heterogeneous pattern of groundwater-surface water exchange. The magnitudes of estimated flow varied to a greater degree. It was found that pollutants enter the stream in localized regions of high flow which do not always correspond to the locations of highest pollutant concentration. The results show the combined influence of flow and concentration on contaminant discharge and illustrate the advantages of adopting a flux-based approach to risk assessment at the groundwater-surface water interface. Chlorinated ethene mass discharges, expressed in PCE equivalents, were determined to be up to 444 kg/yr (with SBPVP data) which compared well with independent estimates of mass discharge up to 438 kg/yr (with mini-piezometer data from the streambed) and up to 372 kg/yr crossing a control plane on the streambank (as determined in a previous, independent study)., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier B.V. Human exposure to volatile organic compounds (VOCs) via vapor intrusion (VI) is an emerging public health concern with notable detrimental impacts on public health. Phytoforensics, plant sampling to semi-quantitatively delineate subsurface contamination, provides a potential non-invasive screening approach to detect VI potential, and plant sampling is effective and also time- and cost-efficient. Existing VI assessment methods are time- and resource-intensive, invasive, and require access into residential and commercial buildings to drill holes through basement slabs to install sampling ports or require substantial equipment to install groundwater or soil vapor sampling outside the home. Tree-core samples collected in 2 days at the PCE Southeast Contamination Site in York, Nebraska were analyzed for tetrachloroethene (PCE) and results demonstrated positive correlations with groundwater, soil, soil-gas, sub-slab, and indoor-air samples collected over a 2-year period. Because tree-core samples were not collocated with other samples, interpolated surfaces of PCE concentrations were estimated so that comparisons could be made between pairs of data. Results indicate moderate to high correlation with average indoor-air and sub-slab PCE concentrations over long periods of time (months to years) to an interpolated tree-core PCE concentration surface, with Spearman's correlation coefficients (ρ) ranging from 0.31 to 0.53 that are comparable to the pairwise correlation between sub-slab and indoor-air PCE concentrations (ρ = 0.55, n = 89). Strong correlations between soil-gas, sub-slab, and indoor-air PCE concentrations and an interpolated tree-core PCE concentration surface indicate that trees are valid indicators of potential VI and human exposure to subsurface environment pollutants. The rapid and non-invasive nature of tree sampling are notable advantages: even with less than 60 trees in the vicinity of the source area, roughly 12 hours of tree-core sampling with minimal equipment at the PCE Southeast Contamination Site was sufficient to delineate vapor intrusion potential in the study area and offered comparable delineation to traditional sub-slab sampling performed at 140 properties over a period of approximately 2 years.

The evaluation of groundwater contaminant e.g. tetrachloroethene (PCE) degradation processes requires complete quantification of and pathway analysis of the groundwater contaminant under investigation. For example the reduction of PCE concentrations in the groundwater by unknown dissolution and/or sorption processes will impede interpretation of the fate and behaviour of such contaminants. In the present study PCE dissolution and sorption processes during anaerobic microbial degradation of chlorinated ethenes were investigated. For this purpose, microcosms were prepared using sediment samples from a PCE-contaminated aquifer, which in previous studies had demonstrated anaerobic organohalide respiration of PCE. Solid/water distribution coefficients (k d ) of PCE were determined and validated by loss-on-ignition (LOI) and PCE sorption experiments. The determined k d magnitudes indicated methodological congruency, yielding values for sediment samples within a range of 1.15±0.02 to 5.93±0.34L·kg -1 . The microcosm experiment showed lower PCE concentrations than expected, based on spiked PCE and observed anaerobic microbial degradation processes. Nevertheless the amount of PCE spike added was completely recovered albeit in the form of lower chlorinated metabolites. A delay due to dissolution processes was not responsible for this phenomenon. Sorption to sediments could only partially explain the reduction of PCE in the water phase. Mercury is a contaminant of global concern due to its harmful effects on human health and for the detrimental consequences of its release in the environment. Sources of liquid elemental mercury are usually anthropogenic, such as chlor-alkali plants. To date insight into the infiltration behaviour of liquid elemental mercury in the subsurface is lacking, although this is critical for assessing both characterization and remediation approaches for mercury DNAPL contaminated sites. Therefore, in this study the infiltration behaviour of elemental mercury in fully and partially water saturated systems was investigated using column experiments. The properties affecting the constitutive relations governing the infiltration behaviour of liquid Hg 0 , and PCE for comparison, were determined using P c (S) experiments with different granular porous media (glass beads and sands) for different two- and three-phase configurations. Results showed that, in water saturated porous media, elemental mercury, as PCE, acted as a non-wetting fluid. The required entry head for elemental mercury was higher (from about 5 to 7 times). However, due to the almost tenfold higher density of mercury, the required NAPL entry heads of 6.19cm and 12.51cm for mercury to infiltrate were 37.5% to 20.7% lower than for PCE for the same porous media. Although Leverett scaling was able to reproduce the natural tendency of Hg 0 to be more prone than PCE to infiltrate in water saturated porous media, it considerably underestimated Hg 0 infiltration capacity in comparison with the experimental results. In the partially water saturated system, in contrast with PCE, elemental mercury also acted as a nonwetting fluid, therefore having to overcome an entry head to infiltrate. The required Hg 0 entry heads (10.45 and 15.74cm) were considerably higher (68.9% and 25.8%) than for the water saturated porous systems. Furthermore, in the partially water saturated systems, experiments showed that elemental mercury displaced both air and water, depending on the initial water distribution within the pores. This indicates that the conventional wettability hierarchy, in which the NAPL has an intermediate wetting state between the air and the water phases, is not valid for liquid elemental mercury. Therefore, for future modelling of elemental mercury DNAPL infiltration behaviour in variably water saturated porous media, a different formulation of the governing constitutive relations will be required., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier B.V. Tetrachloroethylene (PCE) is among the most ubiquitous chlorinated compounds found in groundwater contamination. Its chlorinated degradation by-products remain highly toxic. In this study, an anaerobic/aerobic permeable reactive barrier system consisting of four different functional layers was designed to remediate PCE-contaminated groundwater. The first (oxygen capture) layer maintained the dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration at < 1.35 mg/L in influent supplied to the second (anaerobic) layer. The third (oxygen-releasing) layer maintained DO concentration at > 11.3 mg/L within influent supplied to the fourth (aerobic) layer. The results show that 99% of PCE was removed, mostly within the second layer (anaerobic). Furthermore, the toxic by-products trichloroethylene (TCE), dichloroethylene (DCE), and vinyl chloride (VC) were further degraded by 98, 90, and 92%, respectively, in layer 4 (aerobic). Thus, the designed anaerobic/aerobic permeable reactive barrier system could control both PCE and its degradation by-products, showing great potential as an efficient remediation alternative for the in situ treatment of PCE-contaminated groundwater.

This paper shows the use of exhaled air as a biomonitoring method to assess perchloroethylene (PERC) environmental and occupational exposure. A sensitive, fast, and solvent free analytical method was developed to determine PERC in ambient and exhaled air of individuals occupationally exposed. The developed method used cold fiber solid phase microextraction (CF-SPME) as the sampling technique, and a standard permeation method to simulation of air matrix. The analysis were conducted by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (GC/MS). The methods were validated and were found to be precise, linear and sensitive for environmental and biological monitoring. The developed methods were applied to twenty-seven sampling points spread across Belo Horizonte city, Brazil, twenty four dry cleaners, an electroplating industry, a research laboratory, and an automotive paint preparation shop. The results of ambient air analyses ranging from 14.0 to 3205.0µgm -3 with median concentration of 599.0µgm -3 . Furthermore, sampling of exhaled air of individuals occupationally exposed presented results ranging from 6.0 to 2635.0µgm -3 with median concentration of 325.0µgm -3 . The strong correlation observed between ambient and exhaled air (r =0.930) demonstrates that exhaled air is a suitable biomarker for evaluating occupational exposure to PERC., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier Inc. Objectives: Trichloroethylene, a chlorinated solvent widely used for metal degreasing, is classified by the International Agency for Research on Cancer as a kidney carcinogen. Other chlorinated solvents are suspected carcinogens, most notably the cleaning solvent perchloroethylene, although it is unclear whether they are associated with kidney cancer. We investigated kidney cancer associations with occupational exposure to 6 chlorinated solvents (trichloroethylene, perchloroethylene, 1,1,1-trichloroethane, carbon tetrachloride, chloroform, and methylene chloride) within a case-control study using detailed exposure assessment methods., Methods: Cases (n=1217) and controls (n=1235) provided information on their occupational histories and, for selected occupations, on tasks involving potential exposure to chlorinated solvents through job-specific interview modules. Using this information, an industrial hygienist assessed potential exposure to each solvent. We computed ORs and 95% CIs for different exposure metrics, with unexposed participants as the referent group., Results: 1,1,1-trichloroethane, carbon tetrachloride, chloroform, and methylene chloride were not associated with kidney cancer. Among jobs with high exposure intensity, high cumulative hours exposed to perchloroethylene was associated with increased risk, both overall (third tertile vs unexposed: OR 3.1, 95% CI 1.3 to 7.4) and after excluding participants with ≥50% exposure probability for trichloroethylene (OR 3.0, 95% CI 0.99 to 9.0). A non-significant association with high cumulative hours exposed to trichloroethylene was observed (OR 1.7, 95% CI 0.8 to 3.8)., Conclusions: In this study, high exposure to perchloroethylene was associated with kidney cancer, independent of trichloroethylene. Perchloroethylene (PERC) is a compound commonly used as a solvent in dry cleaning, despite its severe health and environmental impacts. In recent times chemicals such as hydrocarbons, GreenEarth(®), acetal and liquid carbon dioxide have emerged as less damaging substitutes for PERC, and an even more sustainable water-based wet cleaning process has been developed. We employed a systematic review approach to provide a comprehensive overview of the existing research evidence in the area of sustainable and safe apparel cleaning methods and care. Our review describes traditional professional dry cleaning methods, as well as those that utilise solvents other than PERC, and their ecological attributes. In addition, the new professional wet cleaning process is discussed. Finally, we address the health hazards of the various solvents used in dry cleaning and state-of-the-art solvent residue trace analysis techniques., (Copyright © 2016 Elsevier Ltd. Thermal tetrachloroethene (PCE) remediation by steam injection in a sandy aquifer led to the release of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) from aquifer sediments resulting in more reduced redox conditions, accelerated PCE biodegradation, and changes in microbial populations. These changes were documented by comparing data collected prior to the remediation event and eight years later. Based on the premise that dual C-Cl isotope slopes reflect ongoing degradation pathways, the slopes associated with PCE and TCE suggest the predominance of biotic reductive dechlorination near the source area. PCE was the predominant chlorinated ethene near the source area prior to thermal treatment. After thermal treatment, cDCE became predominant. The biotic contribution to these changes was supported by the presence of Dehalococcoides sp. DNA (Dhc) and Dhc targeted rRNA close to the source area. In contrast, dual C-Cl isotope analysis together with the almost absent VC (13)C depletion in comparison to cDCE (13)C depletion suggested that cDCE was subject to abiotic degradation due to the presence of pyrite, possible surface-bound iron (II) or reduced iron sulphides in the downgradient part of the plume. This interpretation is supported by the relative lack of Dhc in the downgradient part of the plume. The results of this study show that thermal remediation can enhance the biodegradation of chlorinated ethenes, and that this effect can be traced to the mobilisation of DOC due to steam injection. This, in turn, results in more reduced redox conditions which favor active reductive dechlorination and/or may lead to a series of redox reactions which may consecutively trigger biotically induced abiotic degradation. Finally, this study illustrates the valuable complementary application of compound-specific isotopic analysis combined with molecular biology tools to evaluate which biogeochemical processes are taking place in an aquifer contaminated with chlorinated ethenes., (Copyright © 2016 Elsevier B.V. In the transition zone between aquifers and basal aquitards, the perchloroethene pools at an early time in their evolution are more recalcitrant than those elsewhere in the aquifer. The aim of this study is to demonstrate that the biodegradation of chloroethenes from aged pools (i.e., pools after decades of continuous groundwater flushing and dissolution) of perchloroethene is favored in the transition zone. A field site was selected where an aged pool exists at the bottom of a transition zone. Two boreholes were drilled to obtain sediment and groundwater samples to perform chemical, isotopic, molecular, and clone library analyses and microcosm experiments. The main results were as follows: (i) the transition zone is characterized by a high microbial richness; (ii) reductively dechlorinating microorganisms are present and partial reductive dechlorination coexists with denitrification, Fe and Mn reduction, and sulfate reduction; (iii) reductively dechlorinating microorganisms were also present in the zone of the aged pool; (v) the high concentrations of perchloroethene in this zone resulted in a decrease in microbial richness; (vi) however, the presence of fermenting microorganisms supplying electrons for the reductively dechlorinating microorganisms prevented the reductive dechlorination to be inhibited. These findings suggest that biostimulation and/or bioaugmentation could be applied to promote complete reductive dechlorination and to enhance the dissolution of more nonaqueous phase liquids (DNAPL).

Unlabelled: The objective of this research was to determine if prenatal exposure to two common urban air pollutants, diesel and perchloroethylene, affects children's 3rd grade standardized test scores in mathematics and English language arts (ELA). Exposure estimates consisted of annual average ambient concentrations of diesel particulate matter and perchloroethylene obtained from the Environmental Protection Agency's 1996 National Air Toxics Assessment for the residential census tract at birth. Outcome data consisted of linked birth and educational records for 201,559 singleton, non-anomalous children born between 1994 and 1998 who attended New York City public schools. Quantile regression models were used to estimate the effects of these exposures on multiple points within the continuous distribution of standardized test scores. Modified Poisson regression models were used to calculate risk ratios (RR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) of failing to meet curricula standards, an indicator derived from test scores. Models were adjusted for a number of maternal, neighborhood and childhood factors. Results showed that math scores were approximately 6% of a standard deviation lower for children exposed to the highest levels of both pollutants as compared to children with low levels of both pollutants. Children exposed to high levels of both pollutants also had the largest risk of failing to meet math test standards when compared to children with low levels of exposure to the pollutants (RR 1.10 95%CI 1.07,1.12 RR high perchloroethylene only 1.03 95%CI 1.00,1.06; RR high diesel PM only 1.02 95%CI 0.99,1.06). There was no association observed between exposure to the pollutants and failing to meet ELA standards. This study provides preliminary evidence of associations between prenatal exposure to urban air pollutants and lower academic outcomes. Chlorinated compounds pose environmental concerns due to their toxicity and wide distribution in several matrices. Microorganisms specialized in leading anaerobic reductive dechlorination (RD) processes, including Dehalococcoides mccartyi (Dhc), are able to reduce chlorinated compounds to harmless products or to less toxic forms. Here we report the first detailed study dealing with the RD potential of heavy polluted marine sediment by evaluating the biodegradation kinetics together with the composition, dynamics and activity of indigenous microbial population. A microcosm study was conducted under strictly anaerobic conditions on marine sediment collected near the marine coast of Sarno river mouth, one of the most polluted river in Europe. Tetrachloroethene (PCE), used as model pollutant, was completely converted to ethene within 150 days at reductive dechlorination rate equal to 0.016 meq L(-1) d(-1). Consecutive spikes of PCE allowed increasing the degradation kinetics up to 0.1 meq L(-1)d(-1) within 20 days. Strictly anaerobiosis and repeated spikes of PCE stimulated the growth of indigenous Dhc cells (growth yield of ~7.0 E + 07 Dhc cells per μM Cl(-1) released). Dhc strains carrying the reductive dehalogenase genes tceA and vcrA were detected in the original marine sediment and their number increased during the treatment as demonstrated by the high level of tceA expression at the end of the microcosm study (2.41 E + 05 tceA gene transcripts g(-1)). Notably, the structure of the microbial communities was fully described by Catalysed Reporter Deposition Fluorescence In Situ Hybridization (CARD-FISH) as wells as the dynamics of the dechlorinating bacteria during the microcosms operation. Interestingly, a direct role of Dhc cells was ascertained suggesting the existence of strains adapted at salinity conditions. Additionally, non-Dhc Chloroflexi were retrieved in the original sediment and were kept stable over time suggesting their likely flanking role of the RD process., (Copyright © 2015 Elsevier B.V. Equilibrated vapor concentrations at 25°C of the tetrachloroethylene-chlorobenzene system were obtained in the presence of air to establish a method for estimating vapor concentrations in work environments where multicomponent organic solvents are used. The experimental data were correlated by introducing activity coefficients calculated by the UNIFAC (Universal Quasichemical Functional Group Activity Coefficient) model. There were four interaction parameters between groups in this solution system, and three had already been determined.However, the fourth parameter--the interaction parameter between ACCl and Cl-(C=C) groups--remains unknown. Therefore, this parameter was determined by a nonlinear least-squares method to obtain the best fit for the experimental data. The calculated values were found to be in good agreement with the experimental values.

Long-term monitoring of the content of perchloroethylene (PCE) in a river ecosystem affected by groundwater contamination was performed at a site in the Czech Republic. The quality of surface water was monitored quarterly between 1994 and 2013, and fish were collected from the affected ecosystem to analyse the content of PCE in their tissue in 1998, 2011 and 2012. Concentrations of PCE (9-140 μg/kg) in the tissue of fish collected from the contaminated part of the river were elevated compared to the part of the river unaffected by the contamination (ND to 5 μg/kg PCE). The quality of surface water has improved as a result of groundwater remediation during the evaluated period. Before the remedial action, PCE concentrations ranged from 30 to 95 μg/L (1994-1997). Following commencement of remedial activities in September 1997, a decrease in the content of PCE in the surface water to 7.3 μg/L (1998) and further to 1 μg/L (2011) and 1.1 μg/L (2012) led to a progressive decrease in the average concentration of PCE in the fish muscle tissue from 79 μg/kg (1998) to 24 (2011) and 30 μg/kg (2012), respectively. It was determined that the bioconcentration of PCE does not have a linear dependence because the decrease in contamination in the fish muscle tissue is not directly proportional to the decrease in contamination in the river water. The observed average bioconcentration factors were 24 and 28 for the lower concentrations of PCE and 11 for the higher concentrations of PCE in the river. In terms of age, length and weight of the collected fish, weight had the greatest significance for bioconcentration, followed by the length, with age being evaluated as a less significant factor.

To investigate the effects of soil structure, soil organic carbon (SOC), minerals, initial tetrachloroethylene (PCE) concentration (C0), and ionic strength (Ci) on PCE sorption-desorption, six types of soil were adopted as adsorbents, including two types of natural soil and four types of soil with most of the "soft carbon" pre-treated by H2O2 or with all SOC removed from the original soil by 600 °C ignition. The results showed that all of the sorption-desorption isotherms of PCE were non-linear within the experimental range, and the H2O2-treated samples exhibited higher non-linear sorption isotherms than those of the original soils. The hysteresis index of PCE sorption to original soil is less pronounced than that of the H2O2-treated and 600 °C-heated samples due to the entrapment of sorbate molecules in the "hard carbon" domain, together with the meso- and microporous structures within the 600 °C-heated samples. Both SOC and minerals have impacts on the sorption-desorption of PCE, and the sorption-desorption contribution rate of minerals increased with decreasing SOC content. C0 has almost no influence on the sorption to minerals of the soils, but the contribution rate of minerals decreased with increasing C0 in the desorption stage. As a result of the salting-out effect, PCE sorption capacity was increased by increasing Ci, especially when Ci ≥ 0.1 M. Moreover, desorption increased and hysteresis weakened with increasing Ci, except for the 600 °C-heated samples. Background: Tetrachloroethene (PCE) is a common environmental and occupational contaminant and an acknowledged neurotoxicant. From 1968 through 1983, widespread contamination of public drinking water supplies with PCE occurred in the Cape Cod region of Massachusetts. The source of the contamination was a vinyl liner applied to the inner surface of water distribution pipes., Objectives: A retrospective cohort study (the Cape Cod Health Study) was undertaken to examine possible health consequences of early-life exposure to PCE-contaminated drinking water. This review describes the study methods and findings regarding the effects of prenatal and childhood exposure on neurologic outcomes during early adulthood, including vision, neuropsychological functioning, brain structure, risky behaviors, and mental illness. The review also describes the strengths and challenges of conducting population-based epidemiologic research in this unique setting., Methods: Participants were identified by cross-matching birth certificates and water system data. Information on health outcomes and confounding variables was collected from self-administered surveys (n = 1689), neuropsychological tests (n = 63), vision examinations (n = 63), and magnetic resonance imaging (n = 42). Early-life exposure to PCE was estimated using a leaching and transport model. The data analysis compared the occurrence of each health outcome among individuals with prenatal and early childhood PCE exposure to unexposed individuals while considering the effect of confounding variables., Findings: The study found evidence that early-life exposure to PCE-contaminated drinking water has long-term neurotoxic effects. The strongest associations were seen with illicit drug use, bipolar disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder. Key strengths of the study were availability of historical data on affected water systems, a relatively high exposure prevalence and wide range of exposure levels, and little confounding. Challenges arose mainly from the historical nature of the exposure assessments., Conclusions: The Cape Cod Health Study demonstrates how scientists can take advantage of unique "natural experiments" to learn about the health effects of environmental pollution. This body of work has improved our understanding of the long-term health effects of early-life exposure to this common environmental contaminant and will help risk assessors and policymakers ensure that drinking water supplies in the United States are safe for vulnerable populations., (Copyright © 2016 The Authors. The main aim of this study was to determine the sorption and biodegradation parameters of trichloroethene (TCE) and tetrachloroethene (PCE) as input data required for their fate and transport modelling in a Quaternary sandy aquifer. Sorption was determined based on batch and column experiments, while biodegradation was investigated using the compound-specific isotope analysis (CSIA). The aquifer materials medium (soil 1) to fine (soil 2) sands and groundwater samples came from the representative profile of the contaminated site (south-east Poland). The sorption isotherms were approximately linear (TCE, soil 1, K d = 0.0016; PCE, soil 1, K d = 0.0051; PCE, soil 2, K d = 0.0069) except for one case in which the best fitting was for the Langmuir isotherm (TCE, soil 2, K f = 0.6493 and S max = 0.0145). The results indicate low retardation coefficients (R) of TCE and PCE; however, somewhat lower values were obtained in batch compared to column experiments. In the column experiments with the presence of both contaminants, TCE influenced sorption of PCE, so that the R values for both compounds were almost two times higher. Non-significant differences in isotope compositions of TCE and PCE measured in the observation points (δ(13)C values within the range of -23.6 ÷ -24.3‰ and -26.3 ÷-27.7‰, respectively) indicate that biodegradation apparently is not an important process contributing to the natural attenuation of these contaminants in the studied sandy aquifer.

The migration and distribution of dense non-aqueous phase liquid (DNAFL) in subsurtace are attectea ny many factors. We selected PCE as the substitute contaminant, and performed several well-controlled two-dimensional sandbox experiments to investigate the effect of flow velocity on DNAPL infiltration and redistribution. Light transmission method (LTM) was used to monitor the transport process of DNAPL in the sandbox and quantitatively measure DNAPL saturation. The spatial moments based on measured DNAPL saturation were used to describe the average spatial behavior of DNAPL plume at various times. Experimental results showed a strong correlation between results obtained by LTM and the known amounts of DNAPL added into the sandbox (R2 >0.98). The LTM accurately reflected the infiltration and redistribution processes. The results of DNAPL saturation and first moment (mass center) showed that the increased velocity promoted not only lateral but also vertical migration, leading to an inclined percolation path. Also vertical migration reacted more sensitive to flow velocity. The second moment (spread variance) showed that the increased velocity promoted lateral and vertical spread, increasing the pollution scope. The histogram of DNAPL saturation showed a unimodal distribution at low flow velocity, but showed a bimodal distribution at lager flow velocity, and the distance between two peaks became higher with the increasing flow velocity.
