This report describes a rare case of absence of the celiac trunk, which was encountered in a Japanese female cadaver in the dissecting room at Kurume University School of Medicine in 1993. In this case, the left gastric, the splenic, the common hepatic and the superior mesenteric arteries arose independently in that order from the abdominal aorta. In addition, the left aberrant hepatic artery arose from the left gastric artery. This anomalous case belongs to type 5 (Typus primitivus) of Morita's classification (1935), and is the fifth case of this kind of vascular variation to be reported in Japan.

Recently, large-capacity power stations have been built far from load centers with long-distance transmission lines. Therefore, if a fault occurs at the line, generators in the large-capacity power station may lose synchronism from the remaining generators [1, 3]. To prevent an extension of loss of synchronism to other generators, fast shedding of some generators is an effective measure. The following methods have been proposed so far: A method [3] based on energy function approach; and a method [2] which estimates and predicts the relative swing among generators using data measured on-line at each generator and proposes shedding some generators for stabilization. This method requires a large communication network for an exchange of data between power stations. This paper presents a new stabilizing method and a newly developed stabilizing control system which does not require a large communication network because it utilizes generator output, voltage and current measured on-line in the vicinity of the large-capacity power station. Using these measured data, the system estimates and predicts the relative swing between generators in the large-capacity power station and the remaining generators. Finally, the number of generators to be shed for stabilization is decided and shedding is performed. Configuration and characteristics of the developed stabilizing control system are shown. The validity of this method is confirmed by simulation and testing using an artificial power system.

There are many problems concerned with the management of giant cell tumors (GCT) of the sacrum. Three cases of sacral GCT were treated by curettage, followed by irradiation or chemotherapy. Reconstruction involving sacro-iliac fusion was done in two cases. Two patients were able to walk without support, while the other needed a crutch.Complications included amenorrhea in two patients due to irradiation, skin erosion in one, foot drop in one, and bladder dysfunction in one. Post-operative irradiation was considered one therapy for managing sacral GCT.

A series of 92 cases of cartilagenous exostosis were reviewed in regard to problems of heredity, malignant transformation, and surgical techniques for malformation of the forehand. Of 92 cases, 57 solitary were and 35 multiple. Most patients at first consultation were in their second decade.Prevalent lesions were the wrist and knee regions. Heredity, which appeared to be autosomal dominant, was found in six patients among 35 cases with multiple lesions. Malignant transformation was found in only two cases. Malformation of the forearm seemed to be treated well by lengthening of the ulna.

We report our investigations into the detailed pathogenesis of cervical spondylotic radiculopathy from examining the anatomical morphology of the cervical spine in 111 cadavers, and the spinal cord in 5 cadavers. At the facet joints, most of the superior articular processes at C4 and C5 were located anterior from the posterior margin of the vertebral body, while most of the superior articular processes at C3 and C7 were located posterior from the posterior margin of the vertebral body. Examination of the nerve roots derived from the spinal cord, revealed that the motor roots at C4, C5, C6, and C7 were derved from the spinal cord with significantly more width than the C8 motor root. Also, sensory roots derived from the spinal cord with a smaller width than motor roots. We postulate that main causes for cervical spondylotic radiculopathy are these morphological differences at the level of the cervical spine.

This paper describes the recently developed microprocessor-based stabilizing control equipment for survival of isolated mid-city power system having heavy load and large shunt capacitance (Underground cables) of TOKYO ELECTRIC POWER COMPANY (TEPCO). The active power balance and voltage stabilizing control scheme is realized by high-speed control of the 66KV load feeders, shunt reactors, shunt capacitors and 275KV & 154KV underground transmission cables dispersed in the power system.
