Abstract : Proverbs play a crucial role in enhancing cultural understanding and communication, particularly in the context of language learning. This paper explores the significance of French proverbs in the teaching and learning of French at Barekese Senior High School, Ghana. Proverbs, being deeply rooted in culture, provide insights into values, beliefs, and social attitudes, making language learning more relatable and engaging. French is rich in proverbs, and incorporating them into lessons can simplify complex linguistic concepts while fostering a deeper understanding of both language and culture. The study examines how French proverbs can improve students' communication skills, enrich their vocabulary, and enhance their oral competence. By engaging students in creative activities using proverbs, the learning experience becomes more interactive and enjoyable. The research involved 125 students and four French teachers, utilizing questionnaires, interviews, and lesson observations to gather data. Findings indicate that French teachers seldom use proverbs in class, despite their potential to make lessons more effective and interesting. The study suggests integrating French proverbs into the curriculum to facilitate better learning outcomes. Teachers are encouraged to employ proverbs in diverse classroom activities, such as grouping proverbs by theme and using them to teach grammar. The inclusion of French proverbs not only promotes cultural awareness but also makes language lessons more accessible and enjoyable for students. Abstract Background Viral diseases of sweet potatoes are causing severe crop losses worldwide. More than 30 viruses have been identified to infect sweet potatoes among which the sweet potato latent virus (SPLV), sweet potato mild speckling virus (SPMSV), sweet potato virus G (SPVG) and sweet potato virus 2 (SPV2) have been recognized as distinct species of the genus Potyvirus in the family Potyviridae. The sweet potato virus 2 (SPV2) is a primary pathogen affecting sweet potato crops. Methods In this study, we detected an SPV2 isolate (named SPV2-LN) in Ipomoea nil in China. The complete genomic sequence of SPV2-LN was obtained using sequencing of small RNAs, RT-PCR, and RACE amplification. The codon usage, phylogeny, recombination analysis and selective pressure analysis were assessed on the SPV2-LN genome. Results The complete genome of SPV2-LN consisted of 10,606 nt (GenBank No. OR842902), encoding 3425 amino acids. There were 28 codons in the SPV2-LN genome with a relative synonymous codon usage (RSCU) value greater than 1, of which 21 end in A/U. Among the 12 proteins of SPV2, P3 and P3N-PIPO exhibited the highest variability in their amino acid sequences, while P1 was the most conserved, with an amino acid sequence identity of 87-95.3%. The phylogenetic analysis showed that 21 SPV2 isolates were clustered into four groups, and SPV2-LN was clustered together with isolate yu-17-47 (MK778808) in group IV. Recombination analysis indicated no major recombination sites in SPV2-LN. Selective pressure analysis showed d N/d S of the 12 proteins of SPV2 were less than 1, indicating that all were undergoing negative selection, except for P1N-PISPO. Conclusion This study identified a sweet potato virus, SPV2-LN, in Ipomoea nil. Sequence identities and genome analysis showed high similarity between our isolate and a Chinese isolate, yu-17-47, isolated from sweet potato. These results will provide a theoretical basis for understanding the genetic evolution and viral spread of SPV2.

Contemporary discussions about the application of artificial intelligence in newsrooms are commonplace because of the unique opportunities it presents for news media. This study investigated the intricate relationship between journalism and AI with the broad research question: How are journalists adopting AI technologies and what challenges and opportunities do such technologies present to them? Eighteen journalists practising in Ghana and South Africa were interviewed through qualitative research techniques. Transcribed interview data were analysed thematically using the data analysis method proposed by Charmaz. The findings were that most newsrooms in the two countries have not formally incorporated AI tools into newsroom practices. However, journalists use AI tools at their discretion in a non-complex manner, such as transcription, research, generating story ideas, and fact-checking. Practical limitations to the formal integration of AI technology into newsroom operations include cost, language barrier, and aversion to change. Although participants recognised the advantages of employing AI for newsroom tasks, they were also concerned about the ethical quandaries of misinformation, improper attribution, and intellectual property. Participants also thought that fact-checking and mindfulness regarding ethical usage might increase ethical AI usage in newsrooms. This study adds an important perspective on AI’s role in African journalism, addressing the obstacles and ethics concerns.

Since the pre-colonial period to the post-colonial era, public health administration has been intertwined with several issues ranging from the inadequacy of public health facilities and health workers, improper settlement planning, insanitary conditions, inadequate laws, their implementation and enforcement of same. Using a qualitative approach of research, the study focused on the historical interpretation of the challenges and effects of public health administration on health workers and patients in Ghana. This empirical study focused on responses from workers in the Accident and Emergency Department of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH), Ghana. The study teased out information from expert informants to make useful generalizations to shape public health administration in relation to similar facilities in Ghana and elsewhere in Africa. Among other things, it also studies how reported sicknesses and or medical cases such as COVID-19 and the management of same at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital in contemporary times. Again, based on the empirical responses, the study provided empirical prescriptions to help improve public health administration in health facilities in Ghana, which has wider ramifications for related facilities on the African continent. Attention and resources should not only be given to clinical care, to the neglect of public health. Efforts should cut across every sector of healthcare and fully equip the office of public health administration to do a more efficient work. There is also the need to make inferences from the various past challenges and effects of public health administration in the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital and Ghana at large to know how to deal with similar challenges emanating from the day to day running of Ghana’s health institutions including the required preparednes to deal with epidemics and pandemics at the local and national levels.

Historically, and in recent times, efforts have been to understand, predict, analyze, and quantify floods and their impacts in various countries of the globe. Although recent scientific advances have introduced approaches to assessing the risks presented by flooding, little studies have been carried out in the Sunyani Municipality of Ghana for generating a pluvial flood-risk and vulnerability map for risk identification, resilience, emergency preparedness, and urban spatial planning. In this study, five parameters that influence both pluvial and fluvial flooding were assessed to map flood-prone areas within the Sunyani Municipality. These are precipitation, drainage density, LULC, elevation, and slope, which were integrated in GIS. Using an AHP, weights were assigned to each parameter based on its level of influence on flooding. The findings reveal that 21.32 % of the Sunyani Municipality lies within a highly flood-prone area, 39.65 % in a flood-prone area, while 28.06 % and 10.97 % in slightly flood-prone and not flood-prone areas respectively. Built-up areas close to watersheds with lower elevations and larger drainage density are the places that are highly flood-prone. Some towns within the highly flood-prone and flood-prone areas are Abesim, Newtown, Nkwarbeng, Baakoniaba, Kootokrom, and Penkwase. Highly valued infrastructure such as schools, churches, and hospitals have also been found within these highly flood-prone areas. These findings can aid the government and relevant stakeholders in disaster risk management to be better informed, and to effectively plan and prevent flood challenges in the Sunyani Municipality. Moreover, urban spatial planners in the study setting can consider incorporating the flood hazard maps generated from this study into their spatial plans for proactive physical developments.

Abstract Background Within the sub-Saharan African region, there is a growing concern for sexual and reproductive health and rights communication, and more particularly, for adolescents. Given the existing barriers associated with face-to-face access, the need to use digital media to access information and services has become desirable and imperative, especially so due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, in sub-Saharan Africa, a synthesis of evidence that informs adolescents’ digital media engagements for sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) communication is limited. This systematic review therefore aims to examine and synthesize evidence on use of digital media for sexual and reproductive health and rights communication by adolescents in sub-Saharan Africa. Methods A search for peer-reviewed articles will be conducted in PubMed, ScienceDirect, Scopus, Embase, Web of Science, PsychINFO and Google Scholar with emphasis on those published between 2000 and 2023. Only observational and qualitative studies will be included. Quality assessment of included articles will be done using standardized checklists from the Joanna Briggs Institute. Both descriptive and narrative summaries will be used to appraise evidence from included studies. Discussion This review will be essential in providing information on the types of digital media adolescents use, the various SRHR issues they use this platform to address and their reasons for using it and associated challenges. It will also contribute to the advocacy for the inclusion of these technologies in the teaching and learning, provision of and access to SRHR information and services by teachers, public health providers and peer educators in the subregion. Terson's syndrome occurs as a result of intraocular hemorrhage associated with intracranial hemorrhage, but was formerly used to describe vitreous hemorrhage associated with Aneurysmal Subarachnoid Hemorrhage (SAH). We present a case of a 36-year-old woman who was not a known hypertensive but presented with a sudden onset of loss of vision in both eyes and a few hours later became deeply unconscious. A computed tomography (CT) scan of the head revealed massive intracerebral hemorrhage with intraventricular extension secondary to severe hypertension and bilateral acute retinal hemorrhages due to the acute rise in intracranial pressure and the recently described ocular glymphatic system provides a novel perspective on the pathophysiology. A diagnosis of Terson's syndrome was made but unfortunately, her clinical condition deteriorated and she expired a few hours after the CT scan. Terson's syndrome is usually associated with poor clinical outcomes from increased intracranial pressure. Implication for clinical practice is that radiologists should critically examine the orbits during imaging for retinal hemorrhage in the setting of severe intracranial hemorrhage for the necessary ophthalmological and neurosurgical interventions to be made since most patients present with sudden onset of loss of vision.

Congenital humeroradial synostosis (CHRS) is a rare musculoskeletal condition that significantly affects the mobility of the elbow joint. They occur in various types and forms depending on the types and numbers of bones involved at the elbow. CHRS may present with elbow deformity and limitation of function. Appropriate timely diagnosis and counseling are required since CHRS is mostly managed conservatively according to literature and may prevent avoidable fractures of the radius from attempts by parents to straighten the flexed fixed elbow and finally offer adequate time for delayed surgical intervention which is usually ineffective and unhelpful.

Abstract Background In sub-Saharan African cities, more than half of the population lives in informal settlements. These settlements are close to smoky dumpsites, industrial plants, and polluted roads. Furthermore, polluting fuels remain their primary sources of energy for cooking and heating. Despite evidence linking smoke and its components to anaemia, none of these studies were conducted on populations living in urban informal settlements. This study investigated the risks of anemia/mean Haemoglobin (HB) levels in an informal settlement in Accra, Ghana. Exposure to smoke was examined across various sources, encompassing residences, neighborhoods, and workplaces. Methods The study was a facility-based cross-sectional design among residents at Chorkor, an informal settlement in the Greater Accra region of Ghana. A questionnaire was administered at a community hospital during an interview to gather data on sources of smoke exposure in the household, in the neighbourhood, and in the workplace. A phlebotomist collected blood samples from the participants after the interview to assess their anaemia status. Results The population (n = 320) had a high prevalence of anemia, with 49.1% of people fitting the WHO’s definition of anemia, while the average HB level was 12.6 ± 2.1 g/dL. Anemia was associated with the number of different types of waste burnt simultaneously [(1 or 2: prevalence ratio (PR): 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.14, 0.99–1.28: 3+: 1.16, 1.01–1.63, p-for-trend = 0.0082)], fuel stacking [(mixed stacking: 1.27, 1.07–1.20: dirty stacking:1.65, 1.19–2.25, p-for-trend = 0.0062)], and involvement in fish smoking (1.22, 0.99–1.06). However, the lower limit of the CIs for number of different forms of garbage burned simultaneously and engagement in fish smoking included unity. Reduced mean HB levels were associated with the number of different types of waste burnt simultaneously [(1 or 2: regression coefficient (β): 95% confidence interval (CI), -0.01, -0.97- -0.99: 3+: -0.14, -0.77- -0.05)], current smoker [(yes, almost daily: -1.40, -2.01- -0.79: yes, at least once a month: -1.14, -1.79- -0.48)], Second-Hand-Smoking (SHS) (yes, almost daily: -0.77, -1.30- -0.21), fuel stacking [(mixed stacking-0.93, -1.33–0.21: dirty stacking-1.04, -1.60- -0.48)], any smoke exposure indicator in the neighbourhood (-0.84, -1.43- -0.25), living close to a major road (-0.62, -1.09- -0.49), and fish smoking (-0.41,-0.93- -0.12). Conclusion Although the cross-sectional design precludes causality, smoke exposure was associated with mean HB levels and anaemia among populations living in informal settlements.

This study compared the total phenolic content, antioxidant activity, and antimicrobial activity of ripe and unripe Ghanaian habanero pepper (Capsicum chinense) against some selected foodborne pathogens. The total phenolic content (TPC) of the pepper extracts was determined using the Folin-Ciocalteu method, while the radical scavenging potential of the pepper extracts was assessed using the DPPH and ABTS assays. Determination of minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC), combinatory effects with standard antimicrobial agents, and inhibition of biofilm formation were used to assess the antimicrobial activity of the pepper extracts. The results showed that the ripe pepper extract outperformed the unripe pepper extract in terms of TPC and radical scavenging potential. The TPC values of 1004.52 µgGAE/g and 1362.79 µgGAE/g were obtained for unripe pepper and ripe pepper extract, respectively. DPPH and ABTS free radical scavenging potential were 28.80 % and 91.32 % for unripe extracts and 34.27 % and 92.96 % for ripe pepper extract. In addition, varying degrees of MIC and MBC were obtained for both the unripe and ripe pepper extracts against test organisms. Combinatory effects with antimicrobial agents and antibiofilm formation activity varied for both pepper extracts. In conclusion, the use of pepper in food preparation could help reduce the menace of foodborne diseases.

PURPOSEBreast cancer is the leading type of cancer diagnosed and the second leading cause of cancer-related death in Ghana. Mammography and ultrasound have proven benefits in the early detection of breast cancer. This study evaluates mammography, breast ultrasound, and radiology work force availability throughout Ghana.METHODSA survey was administered to all hospitals in Ghana from November 2020 to October 2021. Mammography, breast ultrasound services, and the number of radiologists were assessed. For mammography, the number performed per month, cost incurred by the patient, where images were read, and how long it took to receive reports were also assessed. Health Facilities Regulatory Authority records on diagnostic centers were obtained to identify additional in-country breast imaging services.RESULTSThree hundred and twenty-eight of 346 hospitals participated in the survey (95%). Only 21 hospitals reported on-site mammography. One hospital reported performing >100 mammographies per month. The average cost to the patient ranged from 100 to 500 Cedis ($17-87 US dollars [USD]), although three hospitals performed mammography at no cost. An additional 10 mammography machines were identified at diagnostic centers throughout the country, with 41.3% of the female population living within 1 hour of mammography services. There were 135 hospital-based breast ultrasound services identified with 69.5% of the female population living within 1 hour of these services. There were an additional 190 ultrasound machines at diagnostic centers. There were 96 in-country radiologists identified.CONCLUSIONAlthough there is limited availability and utilization of mammography in Ghana, there is more readily available ultrasonography. A focus on increasing breast cancer early diagnostic capabilities with breast ultrasound should be prioritized in addition to further expansion of the radiology workforce.

Yaws, caused by Treponema pallidum ssp. pertenue, remains a significant public health concern in tropical regions of West Africa and the South Pacific, primarily affecting children in remote areas with limited access to hygiene and sanitation. In this study, conducted in three endemic countries of West Africa where yaws remains a significant public health concern (Ghana, Cameroon, and Côte d'Ivoire), we aimed to assess the knowledge, attitudes, and practices related to yaws among community members, community health workers (CHWs), and traditional healers. The study revealed variations in the perception of causes of yaws among community members: the majority or participants in Ghana attributed yaws to germs (60.2%); in Cameroon the most reported form of transmission was contact with or drinking infected water sources (44.6%); and in Côte d'Ivoire both of these answers were also the most prevalent (60.3% germs and 93.% water sources). A substantial proportion of participants in Côte d'Ivoire also associated yaws with witchcraft and divine punishment (44.8%). Only a small proportion of individuals in Ghana and Côte d'Ivoire correctly identified contact with an infected person as a form of transmission (11.9% and 20.7%, respectively) and less than half in Cameroon (42.6%), although more than 98% of all participants reported avoidance behaviours towards yaws infected people due to fear of getting infected. Most participants expressed a preference for seeking care at hospitals (49.2%, 60.6%, 86.2%) or health care professionals including doctors and nurses (58.5%, 41,5% and 17.2%) if they were diagnosed with yaws, although a quarter of participants in Côte d'Ivoire also sought support from traditional healers. The CHWs interviewed were generally well-trained on yaws causes and treatment options, although they often reported low availability of treatment and diagnostic tests for yaws. Our findings underscore the need for community education, awareness campaigns, ongoing CHW training, and improved access to yaws treatment and diagnostic resources. The data also suggest that collaboration with traditional healers, who usually hold a highly esteemed position in the society, such as giving training on yaws causes and transmission or exchanging knowledge on treatment options, could be beneficial in certain regions, particularly in Côte d'Ivoire.

PURPOSEProstate cancer disproportionately affects men of African descent, yet their representation in tissue-based studies is limited. This multinational, multicenter pilot study aims to establish the groundwork for collaborative research on prostate cancer in sub-Saharan Africa.METHODSThe Men of African Descent and Carcinoma of the Prostate network formed a pathologist working group representing eight institutions in five African countries. Formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded prostate tissue specimens were collected from Senegal, Nigeria, and Ghana. Histology slides were produced and digitally scanned. A central genitourinary pathologist (P.L.) and eight African general pathologists reviewed anonymized digital whole-slide images for International Society of Urological Pathology grade groups and other pathologic parameters. Discrepancies were re-evaluated, and consensus grading was assigned. A virtual training seminar on prostate cancer grading was followed by a second assessment on a subcohort of the same tissue set.RESULTSOf 134 tissue blocks, 133 had evaluable tissue; 13 lacked cancer evidence, and four were of insufficient quality. Post-training, interobserver agreement for grade groups improved to 56%, with a median Cohen's quadratic weighted kappa of 0.83 (mean, 0.74), compared with an initial 46% agreement and a quadratic weighted kappa of 0.77. Interobserver agreement between African pathologist groups was 40%, with a quadratic weighted kappa of 0.66 (95% CI, 0.51 to 0.76). African pathologists tended to overgrade (36%) more frequently than undergrade (18%) compared with the reference genitourinary pathologist. Interobserver variability tended to worsen with a decrease in tissue quality.CONCLUSIONTissue-based studies on prostate cancer in men of African descent are essential for a better understanding of this common disease. Standardized tissue handling protocols are crucial to ensure good tissue quality and data. The use of digital slide imaging can enhance collaboration among pathologists in multinational, multicenter studies.

In this technological era of the Internet becoming the backbone for achieving educational success, the development of social media is an asset for the academic development of students in tertiary institutions. The logit model was used to determine the dynamics of social media on the academic performance of students in private tertiary institutions in Ghana. The Statistical Package for Social Sciences and STATA were the tools employed for coding and analysis. Questionnaires were created using Google forms and administered to 900 participants. The results revealed that hours spent by students at the library have reduced drastically. It is worth noting that whether students spend less or more time on social media, their academic performance worsened. This situation was explained by students spending more time on social media for networking and not for academic purposes. Two reasons can be given for such poor performance, that is, whether students are just not able to use the social media platforms to their advantage or the platforms do not provide relevant information that can meet their academic needs. Therefore, the study concluded that Information and Communication Technology can have a lot of benefits if well managed and integrated but also on condition that a clear online policy must be established to check the conduct of students.

Abstract Background Persons with albinism face challenges to their wellbeing, safety, and security, ranging from vision impairment and skin cancer to stigma and discrimination. In some regions, they also face human rights atrocities including mutilation and murder. Research on human rights and albinism is a relatively new field that has gained momentum since the United Nations appointment of an Independent Expert on the enjoyment of human rights by persons with albinism. In this paper, we present the results of a mixed methods study undertaken to identify priorities for research, advocacy, and policy on albinism and human rights. Methods The first component was a synthesis of peer-reviewed and grey literatures at the nexus of albinism, spiritual/cultural beliefs and practices, and human rights. We then conducted a priority-setting survey, informed by Delphi methods, on extant knowledge-practice gaps and research, advocacy, and policy priorities. Inclusion criteria included demonstrated expertise in the field (e.g., peer-reviewed publications, funded research), membership on national or international associations, or advocacy (civil society organizations) of more than 2 years in albinism and human rights. Thereafter, we gathered leading researchers, policy-makers, and civil society stakeholders for a Roundtable to gain consensus on these priorities. Results Access to skin and vision care, and education were not deemed high priority for research, likely because the evidence supporting the need for these is well established. However, they were priorities for advocacy and policy: what is needed is mobilization of this evidence through advocacy and implementation of such services (policy). Other social determinants of health (rurality, poverty, and gender equality) are present as subtext in the findings, more so than priorities for research, advocacy, or policy, despite their preponderance in the lives of persons with albinism. Research was prioritized on stigma and discrimination; advocacy; and witchcraft, but with some differentiation between Global North and Global South priorities. Priorities for research, advocacy, and policy vary in keeping with the explanatory frameworks at play, including how harmful practices and witchcraft are viewed. Conclusions The lived experience of albinism is profoundly shaped by the social determinants of health (SDOH). Threats to the security and well-being of persons with albinism should be viewed through a human rights lens that encompasses the explanatory frameworks at play.

Abstract In high-income countries, mosaic chromosomal alterations in peripheral blood leukocytes are associated with an elevated risk of adverse health outcomes, including hematologic malignancies. We investigate mosaic chromosomal alterations in sub-Saharan Africa among 931 children with Burkitt lymphoma, an aggressive lymphoma commonly characterized by immunoglobulin-MYC chromosomal rearrangements, 3822 Burkitt lymphoma-free children, and 674 cancer-free men from Ghana. We find autosomal and X chromosome mosaic chromosomal alterations in 3.4% and 1.7% of Burkitt lymphoma-free children, and 8.4% and 3.7% of children with Burkitt lymphoma (P-values = 5.7×10−11 and 3.74×10−2, respectively). Autosomal mosaic chromosomal alterations are detected in 14.0% of Ghanaian men and increase with age. Mosaic chromosomal alterations in Burkitt lymphoma cases include gains on chromosomes 1q and 8, the latter spanning MYC, while mosaic chromosomal alterations in Burkitt lymphoma-free children include copy-neutral loss of heterozygosity on chromosomes 10, 14, and 16. Our results highlight mosaic chromosomal alterations in sub-Saharan African populations as a promising area of research.

ABSTRACTAnnona muricata L. (soursop fruit) is a seasonal plant with bio-geographical distribution in tropical and subtropical climates. This study evaluated the proximate, phenolic, and antioxidant properties of different parts of soursop fruit. The influence of oven and solar drying on phenolic and antioxidant activities of extracts (pulp, seed, and peel) were assessed. Proximate analysis on different parts of the soursop fruit showed the pulp to have high carbohydrate (32.9% ± 0.3) and moisture (19.1% ± 1.0). The seeds however contained higher crude fat (37.5% ± 1.2) and protein (25.0% ± 0.1) contents. Total phenolic content of the seeds (8.7 mgGAE g−1 ± 0.1) was higher than that of the pulp and the peel (8.6 mgGAE g−1 ± 0.1). The solar-dried fruit parts demonstrated superior antioxidant activity to the oven-dried parts. Extracts from the solar-dried soursop fruit samples, especially the seed, can serve as useful therapeutic ingredient for diet supplementation and could also be exploited for its high oil and protein contents.

Dietary habits are developed through a combination of biological, environmental, socioeconomic, and psychosocial factors. However, these dietary habits can also be influenced by access and education. College undergraduate years are important for the development of life skills including the ability to select nutritious meals. This is of vital importance for students who are from communities that are classified as food deserts and food swamps, where positive nutrition behaviors may not be supported. The purpose of this pilot study was to assess the food options at two minority serving institutions in New Jersey to determine the amount of healthy options available. A content analysis was completed by assessing the menus of the selected dining services at the respective institutions and determining their health impact. Twenty-seven food establishments were analyzed. The food locations were categorized into healthy dining (7.4%), unhealthy dining (14.8%), healthy fast food (7.4%), unhealthy fast food (40.7%), healthy café (3.7%), unhealthy café (18.5%), healthy prepackaged (0%), and unhealthy prepackaged (7.4%). Healthy eateries made up 18.5% and unhealthy eateries made up 81.4% of the food offerings. This significant difference in healthy compared to unhealthy offerings is a call to action to improve food choices on the campuses of minority serving institutions. Chronic diseases continue to impact people of younger ages and contribute to health disparities. Colleges have a unique opportunity to positively influence the lifestyle behaviors that can decrease these chronic disease rates. Future studies should investigate the food options at minority serving institutions throughout the United States.

Abstract Background and Aim Goiter is a major source of morbidity in the world, especially in the developing world, where dietary iodine deficiency, a known cause of this condition, is endemic. The diagnosis is mostly by ultrasonography (USG) scan, which can give anatomical, pathological, and functional information for the management of goiter. This study aimed to determine the commonest ultrasound findings of goiter in Ghana. Method The records of all 213 patients with goiter diagnosed by USG scan over a 5‐year period were retrieved. Data collected were sociodemographics, ultrasound features, thyroid nodules diameter, and Thyroid Imaging Reporting and Data System (TI‐RADS) scores, which were analyzed using GNU PSPP, version 1.2.0‐3. χ2 and two‐tailed independent samples t‐test were also employed, with p ≤ 0.05. Results A total of 213 patients with goiter diagnosed by USG scan were obtained over the study period. The mean age of the participants was 50.01 ± 17.27 years, with an age range of 16−92 years and females constituting the majority (82.16%). The commonest ultrasound features were well‐defined solid nodules. The lesion sites for most patients were the whole thyroid (28.17%), both lobes (24.41%), and the right lobe (20.19%). The mean difference in sizes of cysts and solid nodules among genders was 0.26 (CI: −0.14 to 0.67, p = 0.20) and 0.12 (CI: −0.43 to 0.66, p = 0.67), respectively. The TI‐RADS score featured TI‐RADS 4 (36.62%), TI‐RADS 1 (28.17%), TI‐RADS 3 (25.82%), TI‐RADS 5 (5.16%), and TI‐RADS 2 (4.23%). Vikil 20 is an herbal formula produced in Ghana and is widely marketed as a product to boost immunity as well as for general well-being. However, the pharmacological effect of this herbal preparation has not been proven scientifically. Therefore, this study was aimed at investigating the antioxidative as well as the anti-prostate cancer effects of the product. To assess the antioxidative effect of Vikil 20 , the DPPH and ABTS activities were investigated. The total phenolic content was investigated using the Folin-Ciocalteu method. The cytotoxic effect of Vikil 20 against prostate cancer (PC-3) cells as well as normal (RAW 264.7) cells was investigated using the MTT assay whereas its anti-metastatic effect was analyzed using the cell migration assay. The effect of Vikil 20 on cell adhesion was analyzed via the cell adhesion assay whereas its effect on TNF-α secretion was investigated using a TNF-α detection kit. Vikil 20 demonstrated significant antioxidant effects by suppressing 57.61% and 92.88% respectively of DPPH and ABTS radicals at 1000 µg/mL with total phenolic contents of 140.45 mg GAE/g. Vikil 20 suppressed the proliferation of PC-3 cells by reducing the number of viable cells to 49.5% while sparing the RAW, 264.7 cells. Further, Vikil 20 significantly suppressed both cellular migration and adhesion of prostate cancer cells. Finally, suppression of cellular migration and adhesion is associated with a reduction in TNF-α secretion by PC-3 cells. Taken together, Vikil 20 was found to possess significant antioxidant and anti-prostate cancer effects in vitro.

Abstract Background Respectful, dignified care is a human right for all women that impacts skilled birth attendance and outcomes. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of respectful maternity care (RMC) provided at caesarean deliveries in a Ghanaian referral hospital and determine associated factors influencing care provision. We sought to elucidate RMC prevalence and drivers specific to the caesarean experience, to promote rights‐based, patient‐centred caesarean delivery care. Methods A cross‐sectional study was conducted from June to November 2022, among women who delivered via caesarean section at the hospital. Interviews of participants were conducted using structured questionnaires, capturing respondents' sociodemographic and obstetric features and perceptions of RMC. Objectives: To understand the pattern of hysterosalpingographic (HSG) findings and annual trends among Ghanaian women with infertility over a five-year period. Methods: We retrospectively evaluated the hospital medical records of women with infertility who underwent HSG at a major tertiary center in Ghana between January 2018 and December 2022. The data was statistically analyzed. Results: The subjects comprised of 2324 Ghanaian women diagnosed with clinical infertility. HSG identified 1685 (72.5%) with primary infertility and they were also younger women with a mean age of 32.2±4.5 years. The remaining 639 (27.5%) women had secondary infertility and were older (34.2±5.3 years; p < 0.001). Primary infertility rate decreased with increasing age (p < 0.001). Bilateral tubal blockage was seen in 701 (41.6%) women with primary infertility and 365 (57.1%) women with secondary infertility. Hydrosalpinx was present in 236 (10.2%) women, fimbrial adhesions in 444 (19.1%), Asherman’s syndrome in four (0.2%), and bilateral beaded tubes/tubercular salpingitis in five (0.2%). HSG was unable to detect infertility-related abnormalities in 513 (22.1%) women despite their clinical infertility. The majority of patients (1502; 64.6%) had tubal blockage: bilateral in 1066 (45.9%) and unilateral in 436 (18.8%). Conclusions: Infertility rates among Ghanaian women increased at an accelerating rate over the years. Primary infertility was significantly more prevalent among younger women. Tubal and cervical abnormalities were the most prevalent HSG findings.

Abstract Background Haemoglobin SC (HbSC) is a common form of sickle cell disease (SCD), especially among individuals of West African ancestry. Persons with HbSC disease suffer from the same clinical complications and reduced quality of life that affect those with sickle cell anaemia (HbSS/Sβ0). Retrospective anecdotal data suggest short-term safety and benefits of hydroxyurea for treating HbSC, yet rigorous prospective data are lacking regarding optimal dosing, clinical and laboratory effects, long-term safety and benefits, and appropriate endpoints to monitor. Prospective Investigation of Variables as Outcomes for Treatment (PIVOT) was designed with three aims: (1) to measure the toxicities of hydroxyurea treatment on laboratory parameters, (2) to assess the effects of hydroxyurea treatment on sickle-related clinical and laboratory parameters, and (3) to identify study endpoints suitable for a future definitive phase III trial of hydroxyurea treatment of HbSC disease. Methods PIVOT is a randomised, placebo-controlled, double blind clinical trial of hydroxyurea. Approximately 120 children and 120 adults ages 5–50 years with HbSC disease will be enrolled, screened for 2 months, and then randomised 1:1 to once-daily oral hydroxyurea or placebo. Study treatment will be prescribed initially at 20 ± 5 mg/kg/day with an opportunity to escalate the dose twice over the first 6 months. After 12 months of blinded study treatment, all participants will be offered open-label hydroxyurea for up to 4 years. Safety outcomes include treatment-related cytopenias, whole blood viscosity, and adverse events. Efficacy outcomes include a variety of laboratory and clinical parameters over the first 12 months of randomised treatment, including changes in haemoglobin and fetal haemoglobin, intracranial arterial velocities measured by transcranial Doppler ultrasound, cerebral oxygenation using near infrared spectrometry, spleen volume and kidney size by ultrasound, proteinuria, and retinal imaging. Exploratory outcomes include functional erythrocyte analyses with ektacytometry for red blood cell deformability and point-of-sickling, patient-reported outcomes using the PROMIS questionnaire, and 6-min walk test. Discussion For children and adults with HbSC disease, PIVOT will determine the safety of hydroxyurea and identify measurable changes in laboratory and clinical parameters, suitable for future prospective testing in a definitive multi-centre phase III clinical trial. The nine-member CLC gene family of Cl− chloride-transporting membrane proteins is divided into plasma membrane-localized Cl− channels and endo-/lysosomal Cl−/H+ antiporters. Accessory proteins have been identified for ClC-K and ClC-2 channels and for the lysosomal ClC-7, but not the other CLCs. Here, we identified TMEM9 Domain Family Member B (TMEM9B), a single-span type I transmembrane protein of unknown function, to strongly interact with the neuronal endosomal ClC-3 and ClC-4 transporters. Co-expression of TMEM9B with ClC-3 or ClC-4 dramatically reduced transporter activity in Xenopus oocytes and transfected HEK cells. For ClC-3, TMEM9B also induced a slow component in the kinetics of the activation time course, suggesting direct interaction. Currents mediated by ClC-7 were hardly affected by TMEM9B, and ClC-1 currents were only slightly reduced, demonstrating specific interaction with ClC-3 and ClC-4. We obtained strong evidence for direct interaction by detecting significant Förster Resonance Energy Transfer (FRET), exploiting fluorescence lifetime microscopy-based (FLIM-FRET) techniques between TMEM9B and ClC-3 and ClC-4, but hardly any FRET with ClC-1 or ClC-7. The discovery of TMEM9B as a novel interaction partner of ClC-3 and ClC-4 might have important implications for the physiological role of these transporters in neuronal endosomal homeostasis and for a better understanding of the pathological mechanisms in CLCN3- and CLCN4-related pathological conditions.

Abstract The association between fatty acids and prostate cancer remains poorly explored in African-descent populations. Here, we analyze 24 circulating fatty acids in 2934 men, including 1431 prostate cancer cases and 1503 population controls from Ghana and the United States, using CLIA-certified mass spectrometry-based assays. We investigate their associations with population groups (Ghanaian, African American, European American men), lifestyle factors, the fatty acid desaturase (FADS) genetic locus, and prostate cancer. Blood levels of circulating fatty acids vary significantly between the three population groups, particularly trans, omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. FADS1/2 germline genetic variants and lifestyle factors explain some of the variation in fatty acid levels, with the FADS1/2 locus showing population-specific associations, suggesting differences in their control by germline genetic factors. All trans fatty acids, namely elaidic, palmitelaidic, and linoelaidic acids, associated with an increase in the odds of developing prostate cancer, independent of ancestry, geographic location, or potential confounders.

This study provides a general observation of the status of naturally occurring radioactive materials (NORMs) distribution in mining and industrial areas of Ghana in order to establish regional and national data on NORMs. The study includes data on radioactivity concentrations of U-238, Th-232, and K-40 in soils and for water concentrations of Ra-226, Th-228, and K-40 from various mining, oil, and gas communities, as well as water sources used for crop farming and farmlands. The average activity concentrations of U-238, Th-232, and K-40 in the soil samples were found to be 59 ± 16 Bq/kg, 48 ± 15 Bq/kg, and 286 ± 57 Bq/kg, respectively. The average concentration of Ra-226, Th-228, and K-40 in the water samples were found to be 1.62 ± 0.33 Bq/L, 2.08 ± 0.53 Bq/L, and 22.36 ± 3.44 Bq/L, respectively. The estimated average annual effective doses from external and internal exposure pathways in soil and water samples were 0.09 mSv/y and 0.54 mSv/y, respectively. The total annual effective dose resulting from both exposure pathways was calculated to be 0.63 mSv/y, which is below the 1 mSv/y dose limit recommended by the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) for controlling public radiation exposure. Based on the radiological hazard indices, the majority of the soil samples were found to be suitable as building materials as their respective indices were below the limits except for two sample locations and the sludge and scale samples. The average Excess Lifetime Cancer Risk (ELCR) value of the water samples was 1.6 times greater than the recommended value of 1.16 × 10−3, presenting a relatively higher risk to the public of developing cancer. No significant regional differences in the levels of radioactive elements. The regression models demonstrate strong interrelationships between the studied elements, with high R-squared values suggesting a predictable nature of one element’s concentration based on others.

Aedes aegypti is an important vector of arboviral diseases including dengue and yellow fever. Despite the wide distribution of this mosquito species, there are limited data on the ecology of Ae. aegypti in Ghana. In this study, we report on the oviposition preference and the larval life tables of Ae. aegypti mosquitoes in Accra, Ghana. The oviposition preference of the mosquitoes to three habitat types (car tyres, drums and bowls) was measured by setting up ovitraps. We recorded the presence and abundance of larvae every 3 days. Two-hour-old Ae. aegypti larvae were introduced and raised in three habitat types to undertake larval life tables. The number of surviving larvae at each developmental stage was recorded daily until they emerged as adults. After extensive advocacy and lobbying by the media, human rights campaigners, and civil society organisations (CSOs), Ghana’s Right to Information (RTI) Act (Act 989) became law in 2019 and went into effect in January 2020. The Act sets out the procedures for access to information held by Ghanaian public institutions, with oversight by the Right to Information Commission (RTIC). The purpose of this study was to explore the dynamics of initial implementation of the law, in the years 2020-22, and to identify potential obstacles to optimal execution during that initial period. The core research data was collected via semi-structured interviews, between April and August 2022, with 10 individuals possessing deep knowledge of the Act and its implementation dynamics. This interview data was qualitatively analysed, through the lenses of the principal–agent conceptual model and the objectives of the Act, in order to determine the key themes emerging from the data. It was found that realisation of the Act’s objectives was being hampered to some extent by a lack of public awareness, and to a more substantial extent by bureaucratic blockages resulting from a mix of entrenched administrative culture and a lack of knowledge of the requirements of the Act. Based on these findings, the author recommends improved public education by the RTIC in cooperation with CSOs; strong RTIC engagement with public institutions to ensure a sufficient number of fully trained information officers (IOs); continued CSO cooperation with the Ministry of Information towards ensuring optimal implementation of the Act; CSO monitoring of the work of the RTIC; and CSO support for information access applications by journalists and other civil society actors.

Résumé : Cette étude analyse l’enseignement de l’expression orale en français langue étrangère (FLE) dans les lycées ghanéens. L’étude évalue l’efficacité des pratiques pédagogiques, explore les perceptions des apprenants et identifie les défis rencontrés dans le développement des compétences en communication orale. Les résultats mettent en lumière des disparités significatives entre les méthodes d’enseignement et les besoins des apprenants. Des recommandations sont faites, notamment en matière de développement professionnel des enseignants, d’immersion linguistique, d’accès aux ressources en français, de diversification des approches pédagogiques et de création d’environnements d’apprentissage favorables. Cette étude offre un aperçu de l’état actuel de l’enseignement du FLE au Ghana et suggère des pistes d’amélioration, ouvrant ainsi la voie à de futures recherches dans ce domaine crucial de l’éducation linguistique dans le contexte ghanéen. This study sought to use the self-reporting method of survey as well as key informant interviews to investigate the depth and spread of the problem. A total of 115 respondents took part in the survey. Additionally, eight interviews were conducted with key stakeholders. The study found that the most common infraction was verbal abuse. Colleagues, police, political fanatics, politicians, security operatives and government officials, were among the top perpetrators of safety violations against journalists. A sizeable portion (albeit fewer) were dissatisfied with their workplace safety provisions and minimal confidence in the concern of their employers for their well-being. About half of respondents indicated their media organisations did not make provisions for safety gear for covering potentially dangerous beats. Many of the respondents thought that the posture, attitude and actions of key state actors, law enforcement agencies as well as their own association (GJA) concerning their safety were unsatisfactory. The study recommends that the government ensures the security and safety of journalists and media organizations. Media organizations must ensure a safe and toxic-free work environment through codes of practice, policies, and enforcement; and journalists become familiar with the various types of safety breaches and corrective measures that can be taken.

Abstract: Nurses experience varied forms of work-related stress with Covid 19 being one of the major causes of stress among frontline nurses. This study aims to explore the challenges faced by frontline nurses when caring for covid-19 patients at the Ga East Hospital which is one of the main Covid referral centers in the country. A qualitative exploratory research design was employed to explore the lived experiences of nurses at the frontline using a semi-structured interview guide with probes to conduct in-depth face-face interviews. Data was tape-recorded and transcribed verbatim and analyzed using content analysis. The sample size was 38. Two (2) themes and nine (9) sub-themes were generated from the analysis of this study. Participants in this study brought to bear their responsibilities as frontline nurses and the difficulties faced whilst discharging their duties. It is also interesting to know that the frontline nurses did not experience any shortage of logistics however, some challenges identified included Difficulty using personal protective clothing, fear of getting infected, and challenges with transportation Frontline nurses had varied roles when caring for Covid 19 patients, however, several challenges are experienced whilst ensuring this, hence measures should be put in place to overcome these challenges to facilitate the smooth discharging of duties as frontline nurses.
