• Premise of the study: Several recent waves of interest in leaf architecture have shown an expanding range of approaches and applications across a number of disciplines. Despite this increased interest, examination of existing archives of cleared and mounted leaves shows that current methods for mounting, in particular, yield unsatisfactory results and deterioration of samples over relatively short periods. Although techniques for clearing and staining leaves are numerous, published techniques for mounting leaves are scarce. • Methods and Results: Here we present a complete protocol and recommendations for clearing, staining, and imaging leaves, and, most importantly, a method to permanently mount cleared leaves. • Conclusions: The mounting protocol is faster than other methods, inexpensive, and straightforward; moreover, it yields clear and permanent samples that can easily be imaged, scanned, and stored. Specimens mounted with this method preserve well, with leaves that were mounted more than 35 years ago showing no signs of bubbling or discoloration.

This work aimed to describe the foliar anatomy of seven species of Eucalyptus, emphasizing the characterization of secretory structures and the chemical nature of the compounds secreted and /or present in the leaves. Anatomical characterization and histochemical evaluation to determine the nature and localization of the secondary compounds were carried out in fully expanded leaves, according to standard methodology. Anatomical differences were verified among the species studied, especially in E. pyrocarpa. Sub-epidermal cavities were the only secretory structures found in the seven species studied, with higher density in E. pellita and lower in E. pilularis. The following compounds were histochemically detected: lipophilic compounds, specifically lipids of the essential or resin-oil type and sesquiterpene lactones found in the lumen of the cavities of the seven species; and hydrophilic compounds, of the phenolic compound type found in the mesophyll of all the species studied and on the epidermis of some of them. The results confirmed the complexity of the product secreted by the cavities, stressing the homogeneous histochemistry nature of these compounds among the species. However, the phenolic compounds results may be an indication of important variations in adaptations and ecological relations, since they show differences among the species. Objetivou-se com o presente trabalho descrever a anatomia foliar de sete espécies de Eucalyptus, com ênfase na caracterização de estruturas secretoras e da natureza química dos compostos secretados e/ou presentes no limbo foliar. A caracterização anatômica e a avaliação histoquímica para determinação da natureza e localização dos compostos secundários foram realizadas em folhas totalmente expandidas segundo metodologia usual. Houve diferenças anatômicas entre as espécies estudadas, especialmente em E. pyrocarpo. Cavidades subepidérmicas foram as únicas estruturas secretoras encontradas nas sete espécies, com maior densidade em E. pellita e menor em E. pillularis. Foram detectados histoquimicamente os seguintes compostos: lipofílicos, especificamente lipídios do tipo óleo essencial ou óleo-resina e lactonas sesquiterpénicas encontradas no lúmen das cavidades das sete espécies; e hidrofílicos, do tipo compostos fenólicos encontrados no mesofilo de todas as espécies estudadas e na epiderme de algumas delas. Não foram detectados alcalóides, polissacarídeos e proteínas totais. Os resultados confirmam a complexidade do produto secretado pelas cavidades, enfatizando a homogeneidade quanto à natureza destes compostos entre as espécies. Entretanto, os resultados quanto aos compostos fenólicos podem ser um indicativo de variações importantes nas adaptações e relações ecológicas, uma vez que demonstraram diferenças entre as espécies.

Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior There is no agreement regarding the taxonomic organization of the Flacourtiaceae and the theme is not emphasized in the literature, since there is a lack of taxonomic studies on this family. Several authors point out the close relationship between the families Flacourtiaceae and Salicaceae. Numerous families of plants have members with medicinal uses, standing out among them the Flacourtiaceae, mainly the genera Casearia and Carpotroche. Extensive investigations have emphasized the therapeutic properties of Casearia species related with compounds secreted by specialized structures in the leaves. The study of the chemical composition of secretory products together with anatomic studies of secretory structures can contribute to understand the role and function of these products in the plant, besides being an important component for taxonomic evaluations. Considering the importance of anatomy as subsidy for taxonomy, family data are fundamental to elucidate taxonomic problems. The objectives of this work were to characterize anatomically leaves of Abatia, Banara, Carpotroche, Casearia, Prockia and Xylosma species occurring in forest fragments of Zona da Mata - Minas Gerais and to evaluate the importance of anatomical characters for species identification; to characterize anatomical and histochemically secretory structures present in leaves of Prockia crucis and Casearia decandra, correlating with the chemical composition of the product secreted by the former; to describe the micromorphology and anatomy of Prockia crucis secretory glands. Leaves of members of the genera Abatia, Banara, Carpotroche, Casearia, Prockia and Xylosma were collected from three forest fragments in the municipality of Viçosa (MG) and from an altitude field in the Serra do Brigadeiro State Park (MG) and subjected to usual techniques used in plant anatomy. Casearia decandra and Prockia crucis were also histochemically tested. Eleven species were anatomically described, giving emphasis on their differences and similarities. In this work, it was possible to confirm some unifying characters for the families Flacourtiaceae and Salicaceae such as the presence of salicoid leaf teeth, simple unbranched unicellular trichomes, branched multicellular trichomes, brachyparacitic stomata, secondary growth of the petiole, crystal abundance, collateral and arch-shaped vascular system at the midrib, dorsiventral mesophyll and sclerenchyma accompanying the bundles. The anatomic studies carried out on Flacourtiaceae species demonstrated that leaf anatomy can provide data to assist in the family taxonomy, at both generic and specific levels. The secretory system of C. decandra consists of ducts and cavities dispersed on the leaf lamina and petiole and idioblasts present in the vascular tissues, cortical parenchyma of the midrib and in the palisade parenchyma. The ducts are distributed in the cortical parenchyma of the rib and continue in this same region of the petiole. In the mesophyll there are numerous cavities in the subepidermic layer or distributed in the interface between the palisade and spongy parenchyma. Lipophilic and hydrophilic substances were detected, confirming oil-resin lipids within ducts and cavities, and phenolic compounds, of the tannin type, within idioblasts and parenchyma. Alkaloids, polysaccharides and proteins were not detected. This work reported the presence of ducts and cavities for the genus Casearia. Histochemical tests confirm the secretory product complexity, besides indicating fundamental tissues such as sites of synthesis and/or accumulation of phenolic compounds. Fructose, glucose and sucrose were detected in the product of secretory structures of Prockia cruces, with sugar concentration being 49.6% of the total secretory product. Glands were identified as extrafloral nectaries (EFNs), which is the first report of their presence in the genus. The produced nectar has a high energy value. EFNs occur in the basal and marginal regions of the leaf, they are sessile, circular and have a central concavity. The epidermis covering the concavity is secretory, unistratified, forming a palisade layer of cells that reacted strongly positively after staining with Schiff s reagent and Xylidine Ponceau, confirming neutral polysaccharides and proteins, respectively. The nectary parenchyma presented cells with granular cytoplasm that reacted to the test for phenolic compounds. This parenchyma is interrupted by vascular extensions which ramify. The development of nectaries begins very early, in the leaf primordiums of the apical meristem, being totally differentiated in the expanding leaves. Due to their similarity with the salicoid leaf teeth present in Populus and Salix, it is suggested that such clades are phylogenetically close. Não existe consenso quanto à organização taxonômica das Flacourtiaceae e na literatura o assunto é pouco enfatizado, pois são escassos os trabalhos de revisão taxonômica realizados. Diversos autores ressaltam a íntima relação entre a família Flacourtiaceae e a Salicaceae. Numerosas são as famílias de plantas com representantes medicinais, destacando-se, entre elas, a Flacourtiaceae, principalmente os gêneros Casearia e Carpotroche. Extensivas investigações têm enfatizado as propriedades terapêuticas das espécies de Casearia, propriedades estas relacionadas com compostos secretados por estruturas especializadas presentes nas folhas. O estudo da composição química do material secretado pelas estruturas secretoras, juntamente com a anatomia dessas estruturas, pode contribuir para a compreensão do exato papel e da função do produto secretado para a planta, além de poder ser um componente importante para as avaliações taxonômicas. Considerando a importância da anatomia como subsídio para a taxonomia, dados sobre a família são fundamentais para auxiliar na elucidação dos problemas taxonômicos. Este trabalho teve como objetivos: caracterizar anatomicamente as folhas de espécies de Abatia, Banara, Carpotroche, Casearia, Prockia e Xylosma ocorrentes em fragmentos florestais da Zona da Mata de Minas Gerais e avaliar a importância dos caracteres anatômicos como subsídio para a identificação das espécies; caracterizar anatômica e histoquimicamente as estruturas secretoras que ocorrem nas folhas de Prockia crucis e Casearia decandra; correlacionando com a composição química do produto secretado pela primeira espécie citada; descrever a micromorfologia e anatomia das glândulas secretoras de Prockia crucis. Folhas de representantes dos gêneros Abatia, Banara, Carpotroche, Casearia, Prockia e Xylosma foram coletadas em três fragmentos florestais do município de Viçosa (MG) e num campo de altitude no Parque Estadual da Serra do Brigadeiro (MG), e submetidos à técnicas usuais em anatomia vegetal, sendo Casearia decandra e Prockia crucis submetidas à testes histoquímicos. Foram descritas anatomicamente onze espécies, ressaltando-se as diferenças e semelhanças entre as mesmas. Neste trabalho foi possível constatar alguns caracteres que podem agir de forma unificadora para a família Flacourtiaceae e a Salicaceae: presença do dente salicóide, tricomas simples unicelulares e não ramificados, tricomas multicelulares e ramificados, estômatos braquiparacíticos, crescimento secundário no pecíolo, abundância de cristais, sistema vascular colateral e em forma de arco na nervura mediana, mesofilo dorsiventral e esclerênquima acompanhando os feixes. Os estudos anatômicos feitos nas espécies de Flacourtiaceae demonstraram que a anatomia foliar pode fornecer dados para auxiliar na taxonomia da família, tanto a nível genérico como específico. O sistema secretor de C. decandra é composto por ductos e cavidades dispersos pela lâmina foliar e pecíolo, e por idioblastos presentes nos tecidos vasculares, parênquima cortical da nervura mediana e no parênquima paliçádico. Os ductos encontram-se distribuídos no parênquima cortical da nervura e possuem continuidade nesta mesma região do pecíolo. No mesofilo existem numerosas cavidades com localização subepidérmica ou distribuídas na interface do parênquima paliçádico com o lacunoso. Detectaram-se substâncias lipofílicas e hidrofílicas, evidenciando lipídios do tipo óleo-resina nos ductos e cavidades, e compostos fenólicos do tipo tanino nos idioblastos e no parênquima. Não foram detectados alcalóides, polissacarídeos e proteínas. Este trabalho relatou a presença de ductos e cavidades para o gênero Casearia. Os testes histoquímicos confirmam a complexidade do secretado, além de indicar tecidos fundamentais como sítios de síntese e/ou acúmulo de compostos fenólicos. Na secreção das estruturas secretoras de Prockia crucis foram detectadas frutose, glicose e sacarose e a concentração de açúcares equivale a 49,6% do total do secretado. As glândulas foram identificadas como nectários extraflorais (NEFs), sendo esse o primeiro relato da sua presença para o gênero. O néctar produzido possui alto valor energético. Os NEFs ocorrem nas regiões basais e marginais da folha, são sésseis, circulares e com uma concavidade central. A epiderme que recobre a concavidade é secretora, uniestratificada, formando uma paliçada de células que reagiram fortemente ao Reativo de Schiff e ao Xilidine Ponceau, evidenciando polissacarídeos neutros e proteínas, respectivamente. O parênquima nectarífero possui algumas células com citoplasma granuloso que reagiram ao teste para compostos fenólicos. Esse parênquima é interrompido pelas extensões vasculares que se ramificam. O desenvolvimento dos nectários se inicia muito precocemente, já nos primórdios foliares do meristema apical, estando totalmente diferenciado em folhas ainda em expansão. Devido à sua similaridade com os dentes salicóides presentes em Populus e Salix, sugere-se que tais clados sejam próximos filogeneticamente.

Spondias dulcis Forst. F. vem recebendo atenção especial por secretar uma goma que possui ação medicinal. Em outras espécies de Anacardiaceae, a maioria dos estudos sobre as estruturas secretoras refere-se à ultra-estrutura e desenvolvimento dos ductos, existindo poucas informações quanto à natureza química do secretado. O objetivo do presente trabalho foi caracterizar estrutural e histoquimicamente o sistema secretor do caule de S. dulcis. Amostras do caule jovem de plantas com 45 dias de idade foram submetidas às técnicas usuais em anatomia vegetal e a testes histoquímicos. O sistema secretor de S. dulcis apresenta ductos e idioblastos. Os ductos, muito longos, encontram-se associados ao floema e na medula, enquanto os idioblastos ocorrem no córtex e, também, associados ao floema. Os ductos apresentam um epitélio secretor unisseriado, formado por células cuneiformes a tabulares, de paredes delgadas, citoplasma denso e núcleo volumoso com nucléolo proeminente. Nos ductos associados ao floema, observam-se, externamente ao epitélio, duas a três camadas de células parenquimáticas, achatadas e dispostas radialmente, formando uma bainha. Os testes histoquímicos evidenciaram a presença de taninos nos idioblastos corticais. A secreção dos ductos é constituída, em sua maioria, por óleos essenciais, polissacarídeos e compostos fenólicos (provavelmente agliconas flavonóicas), o que permite caracterizá-la como uma gomorresina. Special attention is given to Spondias dulcis Forst. F. for its ability to secrete a gum with medicinal properties. In other species of Anacardiaceae, most of the studies report the ultrastructure and development of the ducts, being scarce data about the chemical composition of secretory products. The aim of this work is to study the anatomy of the secretory system of S. dulcis and characterize by histochemistry the secretion produced. Stems of plants with 45 days old were study by conventional plant anatomy methods. The main classes of secretion chemical compounds were characterized in situ by histochemical tests. The secretory system of S. dulcis consists in very elongate ducts and idioblasts. The ducts are associated to the phloem and in the pith, and the idioblasts occur near the phloem and in the cortex. Ducts are formed by a secretory epithelium of cuneiform to flattened cells, with thin walls, dense cytoplasm and large nuclei with prominent nucleoli. The ducts associated with phloem have, in addition to epithelium, two to three layers of flattened parenchyma cells arranged in a circle forming a sheath. The histochemical tests reveal the presence of tannins in the cortical idioblasts. The secretion of the ducts is mainly constituted by essential oils, polysaccharides and phenolic compounds (probably flavonoid aglycones), which led us to say that is a gum-resin.

Orientadora: Prof.ª Dr.ª Káthia Socorro Mathias Mourão Coorientador: Prof. Dr. Orlando Cavalari de Paula Tese (doutorado em Biologia Comparada) - Universidade Estadual de Maringá, 2019 Discussões taxonômicas e filogenéticas a respeito dos representantes de Myrteae são registradas na literatura desde muito tempo, e continuam crescendo, uma vez que os recursos usados para elucidar questões relacionadas à tribo são cada vez mais amplos e consistentes. Características anatômicas, principalmente dos órgãos reprodutivos, têm sido utilizadas na análise evolutiva e na delimitação da família como um todo, mostrando-se promissoras para o auxílio das determinações sobre as circunscrições dos grupos. Assim, o trabalho aqui apresentado teve como objetivo descrever a anatomia floral e a origem do gineceu em espécies da tribo, pertencentes a diferentes grupos, avaliando e apontando caracteres relevantes que possam contribuir com as discussões taxonômicas e filogenéticas. Botões e flores foram obtidos de coletas próprias ou dos herbários do Museu Botânico Municipal de Curitiba e da Universidade Estadual de Maringá e submetidos ao processo de reversão de herborização, para então serem analisados em microscópio ótico de luz. Os resultados observados e discutidos com os dados da literatura evidenciam algumas características promissoras para estudos filogenéticos: locais de inserção dos óvulos, número de carpelos, presença de compitum ininterrupto, tipo de arranjo dos feixes calibrosos do ovário e vascularização do perianto, assim como para estudos sistemáticos: estrutura das bractéolas, estrutura do mesofilo e quantidade de feixes calibrosos no ovário, tipo de tecido de transmissão e quantidade de feixes no estilete e ausência de cavidade secretora na antera. Os dados obtidos, quando comparados com aqueles da literatura, quanto à distribuição dos feixes calibrosos apresentaram divergências, devido à ausência de padronização durante a análise e a presença dos feixes invertidos, independente das espécies, aponta que o ovário ínfero é de origem receptacular Taxonomic and phylogenetic discussions regarding Myrteae representatives have been recorded in the literature for a long time, and continue to grow, since that the resources used to elucidate tribe-related issues are increasingly broad and consistent. Anatomical characteristics, especially of the reproductive organs, have been used in the evolutionary analysis and delimitation of the family as a whole, showing promising for the determination of the group's circumscriptions. Thus, the present work aimed to describe the floral anatomy and the origin of gynoecium in species of the tribe belonging to different groups, evaluating and pointing out relevant characters that may contribute to the taxonomic and phylogenetic discussions. Buds and flowers were obtained from their own collections or from the herbariums of the Municipal Botanical Museum of Curitiba and Universidade Estadual de Maringá and submitted to the herborization reversion process, to be analyzed under optical light microscopy. The results observed and discussed with the data described in the literature show some promising characteristics for phylogenetic studies: ovule insertion sites, number of carpels, presence of uninterrupted compitum, type of arrangement of the ovary caliber bundles and perianth's vascularization, as well as in systematic studies: structure of the bracts, mesophyll structure and number of calibrous bundles in the ovary, type of transmission tissue and number of bundles in the style and absence of secretory cavity in the anther. The data obtained, when compared with those of the literature, regarding the distribution of the calibrated bundles presented divergences, due to the absence of standardization during the analysis and the presence of inverted bundles, independent of the species, indicates that the inferior ovary has a receptacular origin

Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior Casearia Jacq. é um dos maiores gêneros de Salicaceae com aproximadamente 180 espécies, das quais 50 ocorrem no Brasil, distribuídas em diferentes formações vegetacionais, sendo 21 endêmicas. Apesar das descrições taxonômicas relatarem a ocorrência de pontos e traços translúcidos nas lâminas foliares e glândulas nos ápices nos dentes marginais, estudos anatômicos caracterizando as estruturas secretoras são escassos. Os pontos e traços translúcidos foram descritos como cavidades e ductos em apenas seis espécies. O tipo de estrutura secretora tem sido utilizado, com sucesso, como marcador morfológico para estabelecimento de parentescos, bem como auxiliando o esclarecimento de problemas taxonômicos. Adicionalmente, a elucidação dos sítios de síntese/acúmulo de compostos, assim como a identificação da natureza química da secreção, podem corroborar os estudos fitoquímicos, indicando os locais responsáveis pela produção dos compostos secundários de interesse medicinal. Este trabalho teve os seguintes objetivos: (1) Identificar as estruturas secretoras que correspondem aos pontos e traços translúcidos das folhas das espécies de Casearia e verificar se presença, o tipo e a posição destas variam entre as espécies; (2) Caracterizar anatomicamente as glândulas dos ápices dos dentes marginais das espécies de Casearia; (3) Identificar os locais de síntese e/ou acúmulo de compostos secundários responsáveis pelas propriedades medicinais de C. sylvestris, espécie amplamente utilizada na medicina popular, e identificar a natureza química da secreção; (4) Elucidar os mecanismos de produção e eliminação das secreções produzidas nas diferentes estruturas secretoras de C. sylvestris. Em relação à descrição da presença de pontos e traços translúcidos na lâmina foliar, foi possível confirmar a correlação entre os mesmos com cavidades e ductos, respectivamente. Tais estruturas estavam presentes em 41 das 45 espécies analisadas. As três espécies da seção Piparea (C. commersoniana, C. javitensis e C. spruceana) estudadas, bem como C. eichleriana, não apresentam cavidades e ductos, o que sugere uma revisão do posicionamento destas espécies. Também foi possível estabelecer padrões de distribuição das cavidades/ductos no gênero. Os dados anatômicos possibilitaram identificar os sítios de síntese e/ou acúmulo dos compostos secundários de C. sylvestris. A localização, estrutura anatômica, atividade secretora precoce e a natureza polissacarídica/proteica da secreção, permitem reconhecer as glândulas associadas aos dentes marginais das folhas de Casearia como coléteres do tipo padrão. A secreção produzida pelos mesmos tem sido relacionada com a proteção de meristemas e órgãos em desenvolvimento, lubrificando e protegendo contra a dessecação e/ou contra o ataque de patógenos. Os dados ultraestruturais das diferentes estruturas permitiram compreender o papel das organelas nos processos de síntese, possibilitando correlacionar a ultraestrutura com a natureza química dos produtos secretados. Casearia Jacq. is one of the largest genera in Salicaceae, with ca. 180 species, among them 50 occur in Brazil in some vegetation types, 21 of them are endemic. Despite that taxonomic descriptions have reported the occurrence of pellucid–punctuations or –lines on the leaf blade and the glands at the apex of marginal leaf teeth, anatomical studies characterizing secretory structures, are scarce. Only for six species the pellucid– punctuations and pellucid–lines have been anatomically reported as cavities and ducts, respectivelly. The type of secretory structure has been successfully used as a morphological characters to establish relationships as well as to clarify taxonomic problems. In additional, elucidating the sites of synthesis/accumulation of compounds, as well as identifying the chemical nature of the secretion, may aid phytochemical studies by indicating the specific sites responsible for the production of secondary metabolites in medicinal plants. This work aimed to: (1) Identify the secretory structures that correspond to the pellucid–punctuations and –lines on leaves of Casearia species and verify whether the presence, type and position of these structures vary among species; (2) Anatomically characterize the glands at the apex of the marginal leaf teeth in Casearia species; (3) Identify the sites of synthesis and/or accumulation of the secondary metabolites responsible for the medicinal properties of C. sylvestris, a widely used species in folk medicine, as well as identify the chemical nature of the secretion; and (4) Elucidate the mechanisms of production and exudation of the secretions produced by the different secretory structures in leaves of C. sylvestris. The correlation of pellucid–punctuations and –lines on the leaf blade with cavities and ducts, respectively, was confirmed. These structures were present in 41 of the 45 analyzed species. C. commersoniana, C. javitensis, C. spruceana (the three studied species from section Piparea) and C. eichleriana do not have cavities or ducts, which suggests the need for a revision of the taxonomical positioning of these species. Distribution patterns of cavities and ducts in the genera were also established. The anatomical data allowed the identification of the sites of synthesis and/or accumulation of the secondary metabolites in C. sylvestris. The placement, anatomical structure, precocious secretory activity and the polysaccharide/protein prodution allow recognize the glands associated with the marginal leaf teeth in Casearia as standard-type colleters. Colleter secretion has been suggested to be related with the protection of apical meristems and developing organs, by lubricating them and thus protecting them against desiccation, and/or also protecting them against pathogen. The ultrastructural data on the different secretory structures allowed the comprehension of the role played by organelles on the synthesis processes, thus it was possible to stablish correlation between the ultrastructure with the chemical nature of the secreted products.

Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico This work aimed to characterize the foliar anatomy of 16 species belonging to 3 genera of the Malpighiaceae family found in Paraopeba s FLONA (MG) pointing out characters which may subsidize the genera delimitation, contributing by this way to the identification of species and construction of a dichotomous identification key used to identify taxa which includes the anatomic characters. The analyzed material was collected in the Paraopeba s FLONA and voucher material is kept at the VIC Herbarium at the Federal University of Vicosa MG, Brazil. Specimen samples from voucher material kept in herbariums at the Federal University of Brasilia (UB), University of Sao Paulo (SPF) and Rio de Janeiro Botanic Garden (RB) were used. The taxonomically characters considered to be the most import and that were used in the identification key for the Malpighiaceae species were: the presence and location of glands; presence of phloem in the medular region of the midvein; type of mesophyll; presence and type of trichomes; presence, quantity and disposition of the accessory bundles in the petiole. It was also possible to indicate promising characters for taxonomic and phylogenetic future studies in the Malpighiaceae family, especially for Banisteriopsis, Byrsonima e Heteropterys which belong to this family. O presente estudo teve como objetivo caracterizar a anatomia foliar de 16 espécies incluídas em 3 gêneros da família Malpighiaceae encontradas na FLONA de Paraopeba (MG) indicando caracteres que possam subsidiar a delimitação dos gêneros, contribuindo para identificar as espécies e elaborar uma chave dicotômica para identificação dos táxons utilizando os caracteres anatômicos. O material analisado foi coletado na FLONA de Paraopeba (MG) e estava depositado no herbário VIC da Universidade Federal de Viçosa. Foram também obtidas amostras de espécimes em exsicatas depositadas nos herbários da Universidade de Brasília (UB), Universidade de São Paulo (SPF) e Jardim Botânico do Rio de Janeiro (RB). Os caracteres considerados mais importantes taxonomicamente e que foram utilizados na chave de identificação das espécies de Malpighiaceae foram: presença e localização de glândulas; presença de floema na região medular na nervura mediana; tipo de mesofilo; presença e tipo de tricomas; presença, quantidade e disposição dos feixes acessórios no pecíolo. Foi possível ainda indicar caracteres promissores para futuros estudos taxonômicos e filogenéticos da família Malpighiaceae, em especial para os representantes de Banisteriopsis, Byrsonima e Heteropterys.
