The brain derived‐neurotrophic factor (BDNF) Val66Met polymorphism causes functional changes in BDNF, and is associated with obesity and some psychiatric disorders, but its relationship to health‐related quality of life (HRQoL) remains unknown. This study examined, in youth with obesity, whether carriers of the BDNF Val66met polymorphism Met‐alleles (A/A or G/A) differed from noncarriers (G/G) on HRQoL. The participants were 187 adolescents with obesity. Ninety‐nine youth were carriers of the homozygous Val/Val (G/G) alleles, and 88 were carriers of the Val/Met (G/A) or Met/Met (A/A) alleles. Blood samples were drawn in the morning after an overnight fast for genotyping. HRQoL was measured using the Pediatric‐Quality of Life core version. Compared to carriers of the Val66Met Val (G/G) alleles, carriers of the Met‐Alleles reported significantly higher physical –HRQoL (p = 0.02), school‐related HRQoL, (p = 0.05), social‐related HRQoL (p = 0.05), and total HRQoL (p = 0.03), and a trend for Psychosocial‐HRQoL. Research is needed to confirm our findings and determine whether carriers of the BDNF Val66Met homozygous Val (G/G) alleles may be at risk of diminished HRQoL, information that can influence interventions in a high‐risk population of inactive youth with obesity. The present study investigates whether the way Black young adults constructed their narratives regarding the stressful events of the COVID‐19 pandemic and the black lives matter (BLM) protests related to adjustment over time. A two‐wave mixed prospective and retrospective longitudinal study was conducted in July and December 2020 and included a total of 90 Black young adults. Narrative reports were collected at baseline to determine the psychological interpretations of the two events and were coded based on affect disclosure. Both time points examined adjustment to the COVID‐19 pandemic and the BLM protests as well as the extent to which the basic psychological needs for autonomy, relatedness, and competence were affected. Our results showed that disclosure of high arousal negative affect in narratives at baseline was associated with better adjustment over time. Additionally, results of process analyses showed that satisfaction of the basic psychological need for autonomy (e.g., feelings of personal agency, choice, and volition) mediated the association between narratives and adjustment. These results suggest that engaging in disclosure of high arousal negative affect may be associated with heightening adjustment because it enhances individuals' autonomy, perhaps resulting in a beneficial integration of the events into their broader life narratives. These findings highlight the potential of well‐constructed narratives to impact adjustment over time and have implications for clinical practice to support Racialized communities during unprecedented events. Background and Hypothesis: In response to Health Canada's March 2020 directive, patients on clozapine for over 12 months were allowed to extend hematological testing intervals from 4 to 8 weeks during the COVID-19 pandemic. We hypothesized that this change would not affect the timely detection of hematological abnormalities in patients with severe mental illness., Study Design: A chart review was conducted of patients at the Royal Ottawa who were prescribed clozapine from March 2019 to March 2021. We analyzed clinical and hematological data from electronic health records and Clozaril Support and Assistance Network database to compare occurrences of hematological abnormalities [leukopenia (white blood cell count <3.5 × 109/L) and agranulocytosis (absolute neutrophil count <0.5 × 109/L)] from March 17, 2020 to March 16, 2021, between standard and extended monitoring protocols using binomial logistic and zero-inflated negative binomial regressions., Study Results: Of 621 patients, 196 were on extended blood monitoring, and 425 followed standard blood monitoring. Clozapine dose did not differ between groups (standard: 370 ± 201 mg; extended: 352 ± 172 mg; P = .14, ds = 0.10). Clozapine treatment duration up to March 2021 was 12.6 ± 8.3 years, with the extended group (10 ± 7.9 years) having a significantly (P < .01, ds = 0.50) shorter duration than the standard (14 ± 8.2 years). Extended monitoring did not significantly impact likelihood of detecting hematological abnormalities (OR = 0.83, 95% CI [0.58,1.41], P = .55) after controlling for age, sex, total bloodwork, and other psychotropics associated with neutrophil counts (ie, valproate, olanzapine).
