Abstract

Intercropping with legumes makes efficient use of land and other resources, resulting in lower production costs. The reported work evaluates the effect of crop intensification in garden peas grown under a natural farming system in which pea was intercropped with radish, coriander, spinach and fenugreek. This experiment was conducted during the rabi season 2021-2022 in the Department of Vegetable Science, College of Horticulture, Dr Yashwant Singh Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Nauni, Solan (HP). The result revealed that garden pea cv. 'Pb-89' intercropped with radish and fenugreek under natural farming system produced maximum crop equivalent yield (174.17 q ha-1) with net returns of Rs. 396214 ha-1 and B:C ratio of 3.14 followed by the treatment in which pea intercropped with radish and spinach having with crop equivalent yield of 170.50 q ha-1, net returns of Rs. 382806 ha-1 and B:C ratio of 2.97 in comparison to control (Sole crop of pea: RDF @ Urea 55 kg ha-1 + SSP 375 kg ha-1 + MOP 100 kg ha-1 + FYM @ 200 q ha-1). However, the land equivalent ratio was found to be maximum (1.93) under treatment T6 followed by T11 with LER of 1.72 and minimum LER was recorded under T2 i.e., 0.87. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

32. Prevalence of Synchronous ESCN in Head and Neck Cancer: A Single-Institution Perspective.

Abstract

Objectives: The primary objective was to determine the prevalence of synchronous esophageal squamous cell carcinoma in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) patients. The secondary objective was to determine risk factors for the development of synchronous esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCN).Study Design: Cross sectional observation study.Methods: A prospective cross sectional, observational study on consecutive 300 newly diagnosed oral cavity, oropharynx, hypopharynx, and laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma patients who underwent trans-nasal esophageal endoscopy with white light imaging and narrow band imaging.Results: Among 300 patients, index HNSCCs were located in the oral cavity (n = 154, 51.3%), oropharynx (n = 63, 21%), larynx (n = 53, 17.7%), and hypopharynx (n = 30, 10%). The prevalence of synchronous ESCN was 2.7% (n = 8), including four low-grade, two high-grade dysplasia, and two squamous cell carcinomas. On logistic regression analysis, moderate to heavy alcohol consumption (OR 8.7, P = .01) and primary HNSCC involving supraglottis [(OR 12.5, P = .02) were risk factors for synchronous ESCN. The association of pyriform sinus carcinoma and synchronous ESCN was of borderline significance (P = .054, OR 10.92).Conclusion: The prevalence of synchronous ESCN in HNSCC was 2.7%. Routine trans-nasal esophagoscopy should be performed in all newly diagnosed patients with carcinoma of the supraglottis and pyriform sinus, and those with consumption of moderate to heavy alcohol for the screening of synchronous ESCN.Level Of Evidence: 2b Laryngoscope, 131:E807-E814, 2021. Abstract

Introduction: Tardive dyskinesia is a serious motor disorder of the orofacial region, resulting from chronic neuroleptic treatment of schizophrenia. Candesartan (AT1 antagonist) and lisinopril (ACE inhibitor) has been reported to possess antioxidant and neuroprotective effects. The present study is designed to investigate the effect of candesartan and lisinopril on haloperidol-induced orofacial dyskinesia and oxidative damage in rats.Materials and Methods: Tardive dyskinesia was induced by administering haloperidol (1 mg/kg i.p.) and concomitantly treated with candesartan (3 and 5 mg/kg p.o.) and lisinopril (10 and 15 mg/kg p.o.) for 3 weeks in male Wistar rats. Various behavioral parameters were assessed on days 0, 7, 14 and 21 and biochemical parameters were estimated at day 22.Results: Chronic administration of haloperidol significantly increased stereotypic behaviors in rats, which were significantly improved by administration of candesartan and lisinopril. Chronic administration of haloperidol significantly increased oxidative stress and neuro-inflammation in the striatum region of the rat's brain. Co-administration of candesartan and lisinopril significantly attenuated the oxidative damage and neuro-inflammation in the haloperidol-treated rat.Conclusions: The present study supports the therapeutic use of candesartan and lisinopril in the treatment of typical antipsychotic-induced orofacial dyskinesia and possible antioxidant and neuro-inflammatory mechanisms.
