The present study investigates the impact of meaningful input on L2 learners’ vocabulary use and their fluency in oral performance (immediate and repeat tasks), as well as whether the effects are mediated by learners’ prior vocabulary knowledge and working memory. Ninety university students learning English as a foreign language were randomly assigned to one of three groups: input (N = 29), input repetition (N = 32), and no-input (i.e., baseline group) (N = 29). The input group watched L2 videos prior to performing an immediate oral task, whereas the input repetition group watched the same videos not only before but also after the immediate oral task. The no-input group only performed the oral tasks without watching the videos. The three groups repeated the same oral task after two days. Results did not show a significant effect of task repetition, input, and input repetition on learners’ lexical use and fluency. However, the fluency and lexical complexity in learners’ L2 speech can be predicted by their receptive vocabulary knowledge and working memory capacity to some extent.

To identify profiles of acute traumatic brain injury (TBI) severity and relate profiles to functional and well-being outcomes.Acute inpatient rehabilitation and general community settings.Three hundred and seventy-nine individuals with moderate-severe TBI participating in the Traumatic Brain Injury Model Systems.Longitudinal observational study.At discharge-length of stay, Functional Independence Measure (FIM), and Disability Rating Scale (DRS). One-year post-injury-Glasgow Outcome Scale-Extended (GOS-E), FIM, and Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS).Latent profile analysis (LPA) was used to identify subgroups with similar patterns across 12 indicators of acute injury severity, including duration of posttraumatic amnesia, Glasgow Coma Scale, time to follow commands, and head CT variables. LPA identified 4 latent classes, least to most severe TBI (Class 1: n = 75, 20.3%; Class 2: n = 124, 33.5%; Class 3: n = 144, 38.9%; Class 4: n = 27, 7.3%); younger age, lower education, rural residence, injury in motor vehicle accidents, and earlier injury years were associated with worse acute severity. Latent classes were related to outcomes. Compared with Class 1, hospital stays were longer, FIM scores lower, and DRS scores larger at discharge among individuals in Class 3 and Class 4 (all P s.01). One-year post-injury, GOS-E and FIM scores were significantly lower among individuals in Class 3 and Class 4 than those in Class 1 ( P s.01). SWLS scores were lower only among individuals in Class 3 ( P = .036) compared with Class 1; other comparisons relative to Class 1 were not significant.Meaningful profiles of TBI severity can be identified from acute injury characteristics and may suggest etiologies, like injury in motor vehicle accidents, and premorbid characteristics, including younger age, rural residence, and lower education, that heighten risk for worse injuries. Improving classification may help focus on those at elevated risk for severe injury and inform clinical management and prognosis.

Thai Nguyen University of Technology was established under the Decree No. 31/CP/1994 of the Government along with the establishment of Thai Nguyen University of Technology on the basis of the predecessor branch of Polytechnic University in Thai Nguyen Iron and Steel area. The current training scale of the University is about 8,000 students of all training levels with 21 undergraduate training programs and 07 master's degree programs. In the face of changes in domestic and international situations, the University has jointly adopted new countermeasures in which digital transformation is an important content and solution in development. This article generalizes the basic issues of digital transformation in education, the current situation of this issue at the Thai Nguyen University of Technology today with pointing out the achieved results and difficulties in the implementation. From there, the author proposes some solutions to promote the digital transformation movement in education at the University. This study investigated the impact of synchronous computer-mediated communication (SCMC) mode and familiarity with partners on learner engagement in second-language task-based interaction, and whether learner engagement is linked to subsequent joint-written-text quality. Ninety-eight Vietnamese learners of English were assigned into (±) familiar groups and performed a picture-sequencing tasks in two SCMC modes (i.e., video and text chat). Scores of 3 types of learner engagement (cognitive, social, and emotional) were compared across the conditions. Results showed that scores of all engagement types in the video chat were significantly higher than in the text chat. Familiar dyads also showed higher engagement than unfamiliar peers during the interaction. Learners reported different reasons for their preferences of video chat over text chat. Language-related episodes, semantically engaged talk, and mutual help as measures of learner engagement were predictive of the subsequent text quality. The results contribute to the general understanding of the characteristics of video and text chat and their impact on learner engagement and text quality.

Background Despite differing underlying pathophysiology, type 1 and type 2 myocardial infarction share many of the same diagnostic criteria and can be challenging to differentiate in clinical practice. Correctly differentiating type 1 from type 2 myocardial infarction is important because they are managed differently. The aim of this study was to compare the patterns of rise of cardiac troponin (cTn) and creatine kinase MB (CK-MB) in type 1 and type 2 myocardial infarction. Methods We analyzed retrospective data on 200 patients with myocardial infarction (97 with type 1, 103 with type 2), excluding patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction. The percentage rise from trough to peak values and the ratio of the peak to the upper limit of normal (RULN) were calculated for both cardiac troponin T (cTnT) and CK-MB. The ratio of peak cTnT to peak CK-MB was also calculated before and after adjusting for sex, glomerular filtration rate (GFR), and infarct size. Results Type 1 myocardial infarction tended to be larger than type 2 myocardial infarction, with a significantly higher mean percentage rise for both cTnT and CK-MB as well as higher mean RULN (207 vs 86 for cTnT, P = 0.02; 9 vs 4 for CK-MB, P = 0.002). There was a trend toward a higher rise of cTnT than CK-MB in type 2 compared with type 1 myocardial infarction, as demonstrated by the ratio of peak cTnT to peak CK-MB (0.09 in type 2 myocardial infarction vs 0.06 in type 1 myocardial infarction, P = 0.06). This difference persisted after adjusting for sex, GFR, and infarct size (P = 0.05). Conclusion Both cTnT and CK-MB rise higher in type 1 than in type 2 myocardial infarction. Meanwhile, cTnT tends to rise out of proportion to CK-MB in type 2 myocardial infarction. These patterns may have considerable implications for the differentiation and subsequent treatment of patients with type 1 versus type 2 myocardial infarction.

The article clarifies the provisions of the Civil law and the conditions giving rise to this liability. This paper reports on a quasi-experimental study that explored the differential effects of input- and output-based tasks on L2 vocabulary learning. The study adopted a pretest- posttest within-participants design, with sixty Vietnamese EFL university students. Participants in the experimental group completed four input and four output tasks in an online learning environment. The target items (ten single words and ten compounds) were counterbalanced across the tasks. The study measured vocabulary gains at four levels of sensitivity: spontaneous use of the target items, form recall, meaning recall and meaning recognition. The analyses showed that the input-based tasks resulted in higher vocabulary gains at the meaning recall level, whereas the output-based tasks resulted in better scores at the form recall level. No difference was found in the spontaneous use and meaning recognition tests., Cet article rend compte d'une étude quasi expérimentale qui a exploré les effets différentiels des tâches basées sur les entrées et les sorties sur l'apprentissage du vocabulaire L2. L'étude a adopté une conception intra-participants prétest-post-test, avec soixante étudiants universitaires vietnamiens EFL. Les participants du groupe expérimental ont effectué quatre tâches d'entrée et quatre tâches de sortie dans un environnement d'apprentissage en ligne. Les éléments cibles (dix mots simples et dix composés) ont été contrebalancés entre les tâches. L'étude a mesuré les gains de vocabulaire à quatre niveaux de sensibilité : utilisation spontanée des éléments cibles, rappel de forme, rappel de sens et reconnaissance de sens. Les analyses ont montré que les tâches basées sur les entrées entraînaient des gains de vocabulaire plus élevés au niveau du rappel de sens, tandis que les tâches basées sur les sorties entraînaient de meilleurs scores au niveau du rappel de forme. Aucune différence n'a été trouvée dans les tests d'utilisation spontanée et de reconnaissance de sens.

This study investigated the effects of synchronous computer-mediated communication (SCMC) mode and interlocutor familiarity on frequency and characteristics of peer feedback in L2 interaction. Fifty dyads of EFL learners were equally assigned into familiar (+/-) groups and performed an interactive task in two SCMC modes (text/video-chats). After their interactions, they were interviewed individually about the impact of SCMC mode and interlocutor familiarity on the provision of feedback. Learners’ text/video-chats were coded for feedback frequency and characteristics (e.g., type, linguistic focus, accuracy, and modified output). Results show that more instances of feedback were observed in the video- than text-chats; however, interlocutor familiarity did not affect the amount of feedback. Despite differences in types, feedback’s linguistic focus and accuracy, frequency and characteristics of modified output were relatively similar between two SCMC modes. Content-based analyses of the interviews revealed that learners attributed the differences in feedback occurrence to various characteristics of the SCMC modes rather than interlocutor unfamiliarity. The results suggest greater benefits of the video-chat over the text-chat in promoting peer feedback and emphasize the importance of establishing a positive relationship among learners during L2 SCMC interaction.

Importance Left atrial appendage occlusion (LAAO) has emerged as an alternative to anticoagulation for select patients with atrial fibrillation; however, women have been underrepresented in clinical trials of LAAO, and sex-specific subanalyses are limited. Objective To evaluate the sex differences in the baseline characteristics of patients undergoing LAAO implant and in the in-hospital outcomes after LAAO implant. Design, Setting, and Participants A total of 49 357 patients in the National Cardiovascular Data Registry LAAO Registry undergoing LAAO with the Watchman device between January 1, 2016, and June 30, 2019, were included in this study. Exposure Female or male sex. Main Outcomes and Measures The primary outcomes were aborted or canceled procedure, major adverse event, any adverse event, prolonged hospital stay longer than 1 day, and death. Unadjusted and multivariable adjusted logistic regression analyses were performed to assess sex differences in in-hospital adverse events. Results In this cohort study of 49 357 patients (mean [SD] age, 76.1 [8.0] years), 20 388 women (41.3%) and 28 969 (58.7%) men underwent LAAO. Compared with men, women were older and had a higher prevalence of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation, prior stroke, and uncontrolled hypertension but a lower prevalence of congestive heart failure, diabetes, and coronary artery disease. After multivariable adjustment, there were no differences in aborted or canceled procedures between women and men (613 [3.0%] vs 851 [2.9%]; odds ratio [OR] 1.01, 95% CI, 0.90-1.13). In this chapter, memetic strategies are analyzed for the Steiner tree problem in graphs as a classic network design problem. Steiner tree problems can model a wide range of real-life problems from fault recovery in wireless sensor networks through Web API recommendation systems. The Steiner tree problem is considered as a generalized minimum spanning tree problem. Whilst the objective function of the minimum spanning tree problems is to find the minimum-total-weight subset of edges that connects all the nodes, the Steiner tree problem does not include all the nodes. However, it still has the same objective function. It should be noted that this problem requires a subset of nodes, called terminals, to be connected and the rest of the nodes are optional for being included. The problem, unlike the minimum spanning tree, is NP-Complete, and hence necessitates the design of a hybrid metaheuristic as an appropriate solution strategy. We analyze memetic strategies, based on effective integration of different local search procedures into a genetic algorithm for tackling this very interesting problem. Computational experiments have been reported on evaluating the impact of individual components of the procedure and it is demonstrated that the proposed strategy is both effective and robust.

This experimental study explores the differential effects of spoken input-based and output-based tasks on vocabulary knowledge. The study also investigates whether such tasks result in more learning gains than exposure to input-only (no subsequent task). The study employed a pretest-posttest design with two groups: an experimental group (n = 32) who completed both input- and output-based tasks in a counterbalanced way and a comparison group (n = 12) who were only exposed to L2 input. Vocabulary gains were measured at three levels of sensitivity: oral spontaneous use, oral form recall and meaning recall. The findings showed that participants who were only exposed to L2 input learned significantly fewer words than participants who completed the input-based and output-based tasks. No difference in learning gains was found between the input-based and output-based tasks.

Introduction: Left atrial appendage occlusion (LAAO) has emerged as an alternative to anticoagulation in select patients with atrial fibrillation (AF), however women are underrepresented in trial data and sex-specific sub analyses are limited. Hypothesis: Women will be more likely than men to experience adverse events following left atrial appendage occlusion (LAAO) procedure. Methods: Using the National Cardiovascular Data Registry LAAO Registry, patients undergoing Watchman implantation between January 2016 and December 2018 were included. Unadjusted and multivariable adjusted logistic regression analyses were performed to assess the association between gender and in-hospital outcomes, including any complication, major adverse events (pericardial effusion, major bleeding, stroke, and device embolization), hospital stay > 1 day, and mortality. Results: A total of 20,388 (41.3%) women and 28,969 (58.7%) men underwent Watchman implantation. Compared with male patients, women were older (76.5 vs 75.8 years, p1 day (OR 1.46, 95% CI 1.38 - 1.54, p Conclusion: Women have a significantly higher risk than men of in-hospital adverse events and mortality following Watchman implantation. Further examination of the risk-benefit relationship of LAAO in women is warranted.

Background: Laboratory staff is at higher risk of infection owing to the handling and testing of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patient samples. Reviewing the existing risk assessment and improving risk management are essential for preventing laboratory acquired infections (LAIs) related to Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) testing during the COVID-19 epidemic. We present herein the steps taken to prevent LAIs related to SARS-CoV-2 testing in a tertiary care hospital in Vietnam. Methods: A SARS-CoV-2-focused risk assessment exercise was conducted for laboratory processes and workflow. Risk management strategies, including engineering, administrative and operations control procedures, were established. Standard operating procedure (SOP), staff training, COVID-19 symptom reporting, enhanced cleaning and decontamination, and inventory monitoring protocols were implemented. Sample reception and results reported from February 1, 2020 to September 17, 2020 were documented. Results: Based on risk assessment, a risk management strategy for SARS-CoV-2 testing was developed. This strategy includes the use of dedicated facility, instrument, and cold chain units for testing; SOPs; training (testing, decontamination and cleaning staff); the introduction of biosafety level (BSL)2+ laboratory practices; enhanced cleaning protocols for testing; and the assigning of additional staff for testing and safety system implementation. In total, 38,377 (daily mean and range: 166; 3 – 2,377) samples were received, including 301 (0.8%) samples that were rejected. The turnaround time (median ± standard deviation (SD)) was 3.54 ± 2.97 days. Altogether, 32 staff members were involved with SARS-CoV-2 testing and biosafety management, and there were no reports of COVID-19 symptoms among them. Conclusion: For epidemics and outbreak diagnostics, risk assessment and risk management strategies are important for the prevention of LAIs. Clear instruction on revised risk management protocols, necessary training, and leadership in risk management strategy implementation are essential.

The present study examined the effects of input, input repetition and individual differences (i.e., prior vocabulary knowledge and working memory) on L2 learners’ incidental lexical mining in an immediate and a repeat oral task. Ninety participants were allocated to three groups: input (n = 32), input repetition (n = 29), and no input (n = 29). The input group was exposed to input before performing an immediate oral task, whereas the input repetition group was exposed to input before and after performing the immediate oral task. The no input group only performed the oral task without input exposure. Three groups repeated the same oral task after two days. Lexical mining was measured as the number of words and formulaic sequences shared between the oral tasks and the input text. The findings showed that the participants could mine both single words and formulaic sequences in the immediate and the repeat oral task. Yet, while the number of shared words in the repeat oral task was the same as in the immediate oral task, the number of shared formulaic sequences was lower. There was no effect of input repetition on lexical mining in the repeat oral task. This paper examines the effects of trade openness and economic growth on CO2 emission using a theoretical trade model. The theoretical results indicate that an increase in trade openness intensifies environmental degradation, while an increase in imports may result in advancement of technology that has positive effect on environmental quality, implying a possible existence of the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC). This paper explores these findings using panel data framework based on annual data from Asian developing countries (1986-2013). The empirical results show that trade openness and economic growth intensify CO2 emission. However, the results do not validate the EKC.

SummaryBackground In many developing countries, including Vietnam, little is known about job satisfaction among lower level-health staff. The purpose of this study was to assess job satisfaction and its determinants among district hospital health staff. Methods In a cross-sectional quantitative study, 128 health staff from a rural district hospital in Northern Vietnam were approached for data collection. Regression techniques were adopted to assess factors associated with several types of job satisfaction. Results Overall job satisfaction was moderately high, ranging from 69% to 91%. Across all dimensions, health workers showed their highest satisfaction with co-worker relationships, while, in comparison, it was much lower for their supervisor's style and relationship. However, they claimed their lowest satisfaction with compensation and benefits. In final multivariate models, females and those satisfied with knowledge, skills and job performance were most likely to be satisfied with relationships with co-workers. Staff who were married, received a low pay, who were not satisfied with supervisor style and relationships and who were not satisfied with staff training, development opportunities were least likely to be satisfied with compensation and benefits. Conclusions The study findings highlight an important need for designing an intervention program that considers organizational factors. Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
