The article provides a concise overview of the International Scientific Conference “English Studies in the Third Millennium: New Approaches and Development Trends,” held at the Belarusian State University on October 3–5, 2024 in Minsk, Belarus. The conference brought together over 100 scholars, educators, and researchers from Belarus, Russia, and Oman, representing a wide range of academic institutions. The event, organized by the Belarusian State University, the Institute of Linguistics of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and the Moscow State Linguistic University, aimed to explore contemporary trends in theoretical and applied linguistics through the lens of interdisciplinary approaches such as cognitive linguistics, digital linguistics, intercultural communication, and multimodal studies. The conference featured plenary and sectional sessions, with presentations by leading experts in the field who discussed topics ranging from discourse analysis and linguistic narratives to the role of language in cultural identity and conflict resolution. Researchers also addressed emerging issues in English studies, such as the impact of globalization on linguistic norms, the functional dynamics of English language units, and the interconnection of language and culture. Beyond academic exchange, the conference facilitated cultural and professional networking, emphasizing the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration in addressing the challenges of modern linguistics.

In the first quarter of the XXI century, world-modeling has been actively discussed in the theory of literature, text studies and discourse studies. The concept of world-modeling in linguistics significantly differs from that in literary studies, which determines the relevance of this research. The paper aims to review the publications by Russian scholars that raise the problems of world-modeling in communication, to highlight the dominant tendencies of research within the framework of the cognitive-discursive paradigm and to discuss their theoretical potential. The sample consists of 334 publications retrieved from eLibrary database. The paper argues that due to the influence of the dominant paradigm in linguistics, an independent cognitive and discursive trend of world-modeling research is being developed in Russia, and is becoming more specific, which leads to the emergence of discrete areas of research that accumulate their own system of concepts. The paper discusses the research potential of lingua-cognitive, conceptual, functional, axiological, semantic, stylistic, lingua-ideological, cognitive and pragmatic trends. The author argues that the logic of the development of discrete trends is determined by the inter-paradigm interaction, thanks to which knowledge about the representation of the world in communication is built on general paradigmatic principles as well as the achievements of particular disciplines. The paper concludes by drawing attention to the lingua-cultural, socio-semiotic, lingua-personological and psycholinguistic research traends observed in some recent publications. The interdisciplinary nature of modern linguistics makes it possible to combine several perspectives of the world-modeling analysis. The results of the study can contribute to the further development of the cognitive and discursive world-modeling theory in linguistics and social studies.

In this article, I briefly explore how theoretical linguistics and philosophy are interconnected. I focus on three possibilities, and argue that the fields are most harmonious when utilised in critical reflection of a particular target, a format officially adopted in Theoretical Linguistics since 2002. In one of his main works, The Philosophy of Grammar (1924), Otto Jespersen develops his syntactic theory known as the “theory of three ranks”. Until now, however, few if any have tackled the work to which this theory refers as its source of inspiration: a relatively minor contribution by Swedish military and language scholar Klas Teodor Gustaf Keyser, the Afhandling om svenska språket [Treatise on the Swedish language] (1875). We argue that formal linguistic theory, properly extended, can provide a unifying framework for diverse phenomena beyond traditional linguistic objects. We display applications to pictorial meanings, visual narratives, music, dance, animal communication, and, more abstractly, to logical and non-logical concepts in the 'language of thought' and reasoning. In many of these cases, a careful analysis reveals that classic linguistic notions are pervasive across these domains, such as for instance the constituency (or grouping) core principle of syntax, the use of logical variables (for object tracking), or the variety of inference types investigated in semantics/pragmatics. The aim of this overview is to show how the application of formal linguistic concepts and methodology to non-linguistic objects yields non-trivial insights, thus opening the possibility of a general, precise theory of signs. La explicación del sistema verbal del español en los materiales didácticos, entre los que se incluyen las gramáticas, sigue multitud de enfoques y de técnicas. Para hacer referencia a las formas canónicas cantaría o habría cantado, encontramos en estas gramáticas multitud de etiquetas o denominaciones (condicional simple, condicional imperfecto, potencial…; antepospretérito, condicional compuesto, condicional pasado…). Entre los usos de estas formas verbales (suposición, cortesía, etc.) también se encuentra sinonimia en la terminología empleada. Este artículo analiza empíricamente la terminología usada para hacer referencia a las formas verbales en -ría, así como a sus valores, en un corpus de 30 gramáticas de español como lengua extranjera. Para ello, se sigue un enfoque cuantitativo. Los resultados sugieren multiplicidad de denominaciones y valores: es posible hallar cierta coherencia en la conceptualización de la forma verbal desde la terminología empleada y una preponderancia de los valores no prototípicos frente a los prototípicos.

In recent years, the intersection of psycholinguistics, neurolinguistics, and theoretical linguistics has gained considerable attention in studies on the cognitive science of language. However, a significant gap still persists between advanced theoretical models and current experimental research capabilities. The article contains the results of analysis of viable trajectories of optimizing the linguistic scientific workflow using contemporary applied linguistics methodology, corpus analysis methods and natural language processing techniques. The author provides practical recommendations for choosing and using modern free and open source linguistic software in various theoretical and applied linguistic studies. An extended classification of linguistic software is provided, on the basis of functionality, cross-platform compatibility, free licensing, and open source model of release. Recommendations are given for the best practices of integrating the corpus management, lexicographic, machine and computer-aided translation, and phonetic software, as well as programming languages with support for natural language processing algorithms, into the linguistic scientific workflow. General purpose software which can be used as an optimizing factor in the linguist’s workflow is also discussed. The article is topical due to the active processes of integrating digital technologies in science in the recent years, introduction of applied methods of research in the context of studies in the theory of language, and the imminent merge of theoretical and applied linguistics in a single scientific specialty according to the classification of the Russian Higher Attestation commission. The scientific novelty of the research is seen in the complex and systematic approach to the problem of analysis of the linguistic scientific workflow in the context of free and open source software which does not require commercial licensing. Another innovative element of the research is the extended definition of the term “linguistic software”, which includes not only the software meant strictly for solving problems in the sphere of studying languages and speech, but also general purpose software that can serve as an aid in preparing and editing reports containing the results of linguistic scientific research.

Research in the field of language dates back to the thousands years ago, but the influence of the English language on "Applied Linguistics" in its modern sense is the biggest factor in its development and inception. However, it is difficult to define precisely when applied linguistics became an autonomous science. In the 1950s, it is known that applied linguistics has been an indispensable part of general linguistics, or it has been named as theoretical linguistics since the 1950s. During that period, applied linguists efforts were mainly confined to the fields of language learning, teaching, and testing. Nothing else seemed to be the applied linguistics. However, much progress was made in the subjects covered by it. Probably as part of their field, it was considered normal for applied linguists to focus on education issues in the past. Applied linguists, however, began to believe in the course of time that they should do more than teaching languages or doing research. Therefore, applied linguistics has come to a level at which it can no more be accepted as a sub-branch of linguistics. Rather, applied linguistics, including theoretical linguistics, is a multidisciplinary field applying the information obtained from a number of disciplines in an attempt to understand the language, society and their problems. Thereafter, a number of new branches of science appeared in this field, including sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, neurolinguistics, and computational linguistics. Despite this great development in applied linguistics, applied linguists are still reluctant to enter into many fields that can achieve a development in human societies. The purpose of this research is to explore the most important delicacies of this relatively modern field and to clarify its concept, its origin and the stations where it could reach in the future. The substantial uptick in research on heritage languages over the past three decades has enhanced our understanding of the development of bilingual grammars throughout the lifespan. This interest has been accompanied by a noticeable increase of experimental work, often combined with some degree of formal rigor. Exclusively and predominantly formal research on these languages—especially studies whose empirical focus centers on moribund heritage varieties—occasionally encounters criticism, due primarily to a lack of understanding of the methodology and objectives of this body of research as a whole. The purpose of this positional essay is to once again elucidate with clarity the motivation and importance of formal linguistic research on these languages, providing a fruitful path forward for continued work in this well-established field of linguistic inquiry.

This paper presents an overall picture of the linguistic studies carried out at the Istituto di Glottologia of the University of Pisa, from the middle of the 20th century to the present day. Tristano Bolelli is regarded as the leading figure of the Pisan studies. He worked from an early age to develop linguistic research at the University of Pisa with an original and broad vision, and an eye toward the future. Bolelli taught three generations of linguists in Pisa, whose profiles are synthetically drawn here with reference to their main research areas. Over time, the Pisan linguistic studies have shown both continuity in the study of historical change in Indo-European languages together with the deepening of topics connected to the different theoretical frameworks which have recently emerged. Those who trained in Pisa, and have subsequently become University Professors, adopted Bolelli’s scientific approach, characterised by a great meth- odological rigour, a true hallmark of the Pisan linguistic studies. Additionally, the breadth of the Pisan scholars’ research fields clearly demonstrates the other distinctive feature of Linguistics in Pisa: great freedom in making choices. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper highlights the importance of the distinction between general linguistics (the study of Human Language) and particular linguistics (the study of individual languages), which is often neglected. The term "theoretical linguistics" is often used as if it entailed general claims. But I note that (unless one studies non-conventional aspects of language, e.g. reaction times in psycholinguistics) one must study universals if one wants to make general claims. These universals can be of the Greenbergian type, based on grammatical descriptions of the speakers' social conventions, or they can be based on the natural-kinds programme, where linguists try to describe mental grammars as made up of universal building blocks of an innate grammar blueprint. The natural-kinds programme is incompatible with Chomsky's claims about Darwin's Problem, but it is indispensable for a general linguistics in the generative tradition. The Greenbergian programme, by contrast, can make use of framework-free descriptions because its comparisons are based on independently defined universal yardsticks. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Teaching grammar has always constituted a major part of language education in curricula around the world, although it has also been heavily debated. Most of the debate on grammar teaching focused on the rationales for teaching it, rather than on the linguistic content that should be taught. At the same time, there appears to be a renewed interest in restoring the bond between linguistic theory and grammar education. Previous research has suggested that it would be highly desirable to gain a clearer picture of this content. Which concepts are being discussed in the literature on grammar education, and to what extent are these compatible with modern linguistics, in other words: is the literature on grammar teaching up-to-date? This systematic literature review is the first to dive into these questions. Results indicate: (1) most of the concepts in the literature on grammar teaching are from traditional grammar. To a limited extent, there are also concepts from modern linguistic theory that are being discussed, but mostly implicitly; (2) most concepts are not being motivated because they are meaningful in modern theoretical linguistics, but because they reflect traditional classroom practices and policy. It can consequently be concluded that education on linguistic analysis is not up-to-date, which potentially has severe consequences: implementing insights from modern linguistics is likely to provide students with deeper insights, and teachers with a better equipped pedagogy. The fundamental change in language research, which started with Saussure in the early twentieth century and led to the establishment of modern linguistics, restricted the said research within the so-called central part of language, i. e., the language system, without taking into consideration anything that was conceived as external to language as an autonomous system. In terms of its clearly-defined theoretical structure and subject, modern linguistics once again became an influential leading discipline in the humanities and social sciences. It achieved a great deal, but its achievements took place at the cost of isolating language from its environment and excluding the user of language and the context in which language is used from the scope of linguistic analysis. Although this stance has long been criticized by scholars who prefer to see language within a more extended context, it has generally been ignored by mainstream linguists who dominate linguistic circles. However, in the last few decades of the twentieth century, significant changes have taken place in linguistic studies. These changes have brought about a new era, the era of ″post-modern linguistics″, in which the theoretical foundations of modern linguistics are problematized and the way language is viewed and investigated is profoundly renewed. This article is written in a narrative form describing the linguistic change from modernism to postmodernism and in the course of this review it will become clear in which research perspective the two main linguistics directions (theoretical and applied) are located: disciplinary interdisciplinary and transdisiplinary? In other words what is the object of linguistics research?

The article approaches a current issue of great interest for both the theoretical and the applied linguistics. It is about the report between the properties expressed by an adjective or adverb during the act of comparison, which report has been seen as unified by traditional grammar and presented therefore undifferentiated. They were called the grammatical category of comparative or simply as comparative degree. Lately, the linguists have added the concept of intensity parallel with the comparative degree. This has led to the identification of two grammatical categories: the comparative degree and the intensity without a clear delineation to be made between them. My article reflects the current situation in Romanian grammar. The firsts to talk about intensity and in a Romanian grammar were Vladimir Robu and Iorgu Iordan in their Contemporary Romanian Language, (Didactic and Pedagogic Publishing House, Bucharest, 1978). The idea was taken up in other grammar books, such as the first and second volume of the Romanian Grammar, The Word and The Statement (Romanian Academy Publishing House, Bucharest, 2005) and The Basic Romanian Grammar (Encyclopedic Universe Publishing, Bucharest, 2010). Both books led to a different solution than the one proposed by Vladimir Robu. The information contained in this article is intended as a database for a wide analysis of an interesting issue in Romanian grammar today.

Laboratory sentences in the era of quantitative linguistics This paper briefly compares an early (1996) and a later (2010) article that I published in Nederlandse Taalkunde, concentrating on the different methodologies underlying the two papers: A formal theoretical in-depth analysis of one idiolect in the first paper and a large-scale quantitative and theoretical approach in the second. It is argued that the two methods make different contributions and are both necessary to develop a theory of (im-)possible syntactic structures in natural language. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article talks about an incorporation of quantitative data into linguistic research. The topics addressed include effects of an incorporation on the relationship between data-based and theoretical approaches to language science, an information on the non-empirical linguistics; and details on the branches of linguistics comprising descriptive, typological, and formal.

The article serves as a preface to the present collection of articles, which are based on conference papers on "Quantitative turn in linguistics - what about theory?". It discusses why the question has arisen and how a multitude of linguistic theories may impact our understanding of methods. Some essential theoretical concepts and their backgrounds are explained. There follows a detailed description of two examples of how a concept born in the framework of a certain theory has spread, thus acquiring an important role in the choice of method.
