Transdisciplinary approaches to the notions of “the contemporary” and “contemporaneity” Futures of the Contemporary explores different notions and manifestations of “the contemporary” in music, visual arts, art theory, and philosophy. In particular, the authors in this collection of essays scrutinise the role of artistic research in critical and creative expressions of contemporaneity. When distinguished from “the contemporaneous” of a given historical time, “the contemporary” becomes a crucial concept, promoting or excluding objects and practices according to their ability to diagnose previously unnoticed aspects of the present. In this sense, the contemporary gains a critical function, involving particular modes of relating to history and one’s own time. Written by major experts from fields such as music performance, composition, art theory, visual arts, art history, critical studies, and philosophy, this book offers challenging perspectives on contemporary art practices, the temporality of artistic works and phenomena, and new modes of problematising the production of art and its public apprehension. Music, the Market, and the Marvellous examines féerie, the French fairy play, in the last third of the 19th century. Contrary to received wisdom, the fin de siècle did not mark the decline of féerie. Instead, the period witnessed a renewal of the genre, with two major developments: composerly féerie and scientific féerie, pioneered by Jacques Offenbach and Jules Verne, respectively. The book retraces the transformations of the genre, considering féerie with original music alongside féerie with pre-existing music, supernatural féerie alongside scientific féerie, new féeries alongside revivals of classic féeries, with film féerie looming on the horizon. Fin-de-siècle féerie is probably one of the purest 19th-century examples of a thoroughly commercial art form, where economic forces (the market) shaped the aesthetic result (the marvellous). This is why the evolution of féerie is inseparable from the evolution of the Parisian theatre industry—with the emergence of a new business model—which in turn is inseparable from the evolution of the urban geography of Paris in the age of Haussmannisation and World’s Fairs. In addition to recovering a forgotten repertoire, this study provides an invitation to rethink generic taxonomies of Parisian theatre (introducing the concepts of theatre with music, operettisation, and féerisation) and proposes the ‘total artwork of the present’ as a way to account for those products of 19th-century commercial theatre to which Romantic assumptions about authorship and the ontology of the work of art do not apply.

This book presents an examination of the applied music studio as part of higher education. Applied music studios are where students learn an instrument or voice in one-to-one settings with high-level musician teachers. This book reconceptualizes this teaching model within higher education, and it provides a critical lens, seated in current research provided by a diverse and highly influential set of researcher authors. It provides expert suggestions for improved teaching and learning practices in the applied music studio for readers who may be teachers themselves. It may also provide direction for leaders, directors, and department chairs who oversee the quality of applied music studio settings in the respective higher education units. The key feature of this book is that each chapter will explore new and relevant research, bringing new knowledge to the reader. Each chapter will also suggest relevant applied music studio practices and opportunities based on this targeted research literature. The primary audience for this book would be applied music studio teachers who engage in teaching within the applied music studio, offering suggestions for higher education and private teaching. Giuseppe Tartini (1692–1770) made history both as an outstanding composer and as an exceptional music theorist. Especially after he began to devote himself to speculative reflections of music, Tartini seems to have been searching for harmony between music theory (which he studied in depth, even reaching back to ancient concepts of music) and musical practice (his daily routine as composer and violinist at St Anthony’s Basilica in Padua and as violin teacher). The present 2nd volume of the series focuses on both Tartini’s musical language and his theoretical deliberations.

Menschen, Musiken, Objekte und Ideen wanderten kontinuierlich über den Ozean – und zwar in beide Richtungen. Die Beiträger*innen nehmen sowohl transatlantische Musikkarrieren und Handelswege als auch den Transfer von kulturellen und ästhetischen Vorstellungen in den Blick. Sie widmen sich außerdem den Räumen, in denen das transatlantische Musikleben verhandelt wurde – von Konzert- und Theaterbühnen über Musikgeschäfte und Salons bis hin zu Privathäusern und anderen Kontakträumen.

Die Dimension des Künstlerischen ist bisher kaum Gegenstand musikpädagogischer Reflexion. Trotzdem ist sie, wie Matthias Handschick und Wolfgang Lessing nachweisen, für die Initiierung und Moderation gestalterischer Prozesse von erheblicher Bedeutung. Anhand von vier kooperativen Kompositionsprojekten an Schulen zeigen sie, wie um Kriterien und Konzeptionalisierungen des Künstlerischen gerungen wird und sich bestehende Vorstellungen dabei verändern und schärfen. Dabei stellt sich heraus: Als inneres Gravitationszentrum, das musikpädagogisches Handeln nachhaltig prägt, lässt sich das Künstlerische kaum durch alternative Konstrukte ersetzen – auch dort nicht, wo es sich einer konsensfähigen Bestimmung entzieht.

Drawing on the author's four decades of experience as a concert oboist, this open access book studies a number of foundational issues in the philosophy of music, such as musical meaning and expression, musical ontology and the existence of the musical work, the relation between music and language, and the phenomenology of music. The book surveys the development of Western classical music from the Baroque era through to the 20th century, both from the perspective of contemporary Lithuanian philosophers such as Girnius, Maceina, Šliogeris, and Jackūnas, and 20th century European philosophy. In addition to discussing key questions in the philosophy of music, the book also analyses technical musical terms such as articulation, phrasing, and rhythm.

Rāgs Around the Clock is a rich and vibrant compendium for the discovery and study of North Indian classical music. The theory and practice of rāg are explored through two interlinked resources: a handbook of essays and analyses offering technical, historical, cultural and aesthetic perspectives; and two online albums – Rāg samay cakra and Twilight Rāgs from North India – featuring khayāl singer Vijay Rajput and accompanists. Extracts from the albums are also embedded into the text to enhance learning and understanding. In der öffentlichen Rede, in politisch-populistischen Debatten und in massenmedialen Berichten ist »Parallelgesellschaft« ein seit Jahren viel strapazierter Begriff. Mit seiner Geschichte politischer Instrumentalisierung geht die Gefahr von Affirmation gesellschaftlicher Ungleichheitsverhältnisse einher. Die Beiträge des Bandes setzen sich im Kontext populärer Musik mit parallel bestehenden, scheinbar unverbundenen Strukturen, Begriffen und Konzepten auseinander. Soundscapes are a key aspect in video games. Addrich Mauch presents a new set of methods for ethnomusicological field research and game sound analysis in game spaces. He aims to explore how gameworlds are created, manipulated, and experienced through sound and music. Fictional worlds in video games can be seen as worlds within worlds, mirroring what is outside and therefore be called heterotopias – real sites that are in relation to all other cultural, social, and physical sites of our society. Interaction is an essential aspect in describing those gameworlds; visual and auditory channels work together in supporting the gameplay as the primary feature of communication in video games. Mauch’s proposed theory provides deeper insights of the coded constant conversation between player and computer, demonstrated on the fieldwork studies and analysis of »Horizon Zero Dawn« (Guerilla Games 2017), »Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order« (Respawn Entertainment 2019) and »Assassin’s Creed Valhalla« (Ubisoft 2020).

The emergence of Linearity at the beginning of the 20th century represents a remarkable but yet rarely dealt with phenomenon in music history. Two main protagonists of the time were Ernst Kurth (Bern) and Sergei Taneev (Moscow), whose counterpoint theories formed the basis for the work of numerous musicians of the time. Although concerning the same subject, both theories show fundamental differences, in music-theoretical as well as in music-aesthetic respect. It turns out that these different philosophies are reflected in numerous works by composers such as Ernst Křenek, Artur Schnabel, Alexander Scriabin and Nikolaj Metner., Das Aufkommen linearer Strömungen zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts stellt ein bemerkenswertes und bislang wenig beschriebenes Phänomen der Musikgeschichte dar. Zwei Hauptprotagonisten waren Ernst Kurth (Bern) und Sergej Taneev (Moskau), deren Kontrapunkttheorien Grundlagenwerke für das Wirken zahlreicher Musikschaffender der Zeit bildeten. Obwohl denselben Gegenstand betreffend, weisen beide Theorien fundamentale Unterschiede auf, in musiktheoretischer wie in musikästhetischer Hinsicht. Es stellt sich heraus, dass diese unterschiedlichen Philosophien sich in zahlreichen Werken von Komponisten wie Ernst Křenek, Artur Schnabel, Alexander Skrjabin und Nikolaj Metner widerspiegeln.

The cultural practices of hip-hop have been among people's favorite forms of popular culture for decades. Due to this popularity, rap, breaking, graffiti, beatboxing and other practices have entered the field of education. At the intersection of hip-hop and music education, scholars, artists, and educators cooperate in this volume to investigate topics such as representations of gangsta rap in school textbooks, the possibilities and limits of working with hip-hop in an intersectional critical music pedagogy context, and the reflection of hip-hop artists on their work in music education institutions. In addition, the contributors provide ideas for how research and theory can be transferred and applied to music educational practice.

There are strong links between music and mathematics dating back to Pythagoras and beyond. This book draws together the two disciplines outlining the key methods and concepts that underpin the subjects from one of the earliest uses of a musical cryptogram to computer music in the twenty-first century. Maths and Music is divided into sections, each one exploring a different mathematical aspect of music: rhythm; symmetry; scales; form and structure; and finally some musical curiosities. Musical examples are taken from across the world, from ancient and medieval music through to popular music of the twenty-first century. Psychology of Music is a flourishing area of research in the Western Balkans. However, much of its findings and insights have remained relatively unknown outside the region. Psychological Perspectives on Musical Experiences and Skills features recent research from the Western Balkans, foregrounding its specific topics, methods, and influences, and bringing it into productive conversation with complementary research from Western Europe and further afield. The essays in this collection investigate the psychology of listening and performance and their relevance to music practice. Employing a range of research methodologies, they address divergent themes, from a cross-cultural understanding of aesthetic experiences and innovations to attract new audiences, to developmental perspectives on musical growth and the challenges of mastering performance skills. Authors reflect independently and collaboratively on how these psychological processes are shaped by the different traditions and geopolitical conditions inside and outside the Western Balkans. Baltic Musics Beyond the Post-Soviet is a collection of essays and conversations bringing together different generations of scholars and artists to advance critical conversations in Baltic cultural studies from the position of music and sound. The book focuses on chronologies and imaginaries emerging as the post-Soviet – always once occupied, once colonized – is decentred in Baltic musical life and scholarship, particularly within generations less impacted by direct experiences of Soviet occupation and coloniality (including non-Baltic researchers and artists). With contributions from scholars in music studies, comparative literature, and sociology, performers, and composers, this book revisits archives and musical media, rethinks historiographic and ethnographic practices, and repositions the work of creation and performance. In thinking beyond the post-Soviet, this book offers alternative accounts of sounds marking the Baltic musical past and compelling accounts of the Baltic musical present.

During the past fifty years Schenkerian theory has been adopted as the main method for analysing tonal music. This book questions the value of Schenker’s «tonal analysis» for musical description and interpretation, and discusses its relations to «generative» theory and «implicational» analysis – taking into account its links with linguistic syntax and the perception of tonal closure. It is observed how auxiliary theoretical concepts transform the music so as to pave the way for preordained tonal structures. Alternative readings of the music examples are provided.

The first study of this volume looks for reminiscences of Dies Irae in Chopin’s works. A great number of allusions and affinities are found in the preludes as well as in Chopin’s output. The study also yields insights into Chopin’s composition method. These intertextual findings are used in an attempt to establish the extra-musical content of the Second Ballade. Five preludes – A minor, E minor, B minor, A major and C minor – are closely examined, using diverse analytical approaches. A primary concern is to critically assess previous readings, and Schenkerian ones in particular. An analysis of the initial right-hand passage of the F-minor étude from Méthode brings up matters of idiomatic and ontology.

Der mexikanische Narco-Rap entstand im Jahr 2008 innerhalb des Drogenkriegs in den Städten entlang der US-amerikanischen Grenze. Gleichzeitig wird er vom organisierten Verbrechen zu Propagandazwecken instrumentalisiert, wodurch er sich von anderen Rap-Genres abhebt. Christiane M. Goßen zeigt, wie durch diese Instrumentalisierung im Narco-Rap aus einer ungewöhnlichen Perspektive soziale und existenzielle Räume, Imaginarien und urbane Identitäten inklusive bestimmter Rollenerfüllungen (re-)präsentiert werden. Der Solothurner Komponist Hermann Meier (1906–2002) strebte nach einer ständigen Erneuerung seiner Musiksprache: Abseits der Zentren der Avantgarde fand er um 1950 zu einem eigenen seriellen Verfahren, er explorierte Klangflächen und vertiefte im Spätwerk seine elektronischen Visionen. Die Orientierung an der Kunst Piet Mondrians, Sophie Taeuber-Arps und Paul Klees sowie ein eigenes Arbeitsverfahren mit großformatigen Verlaufsdiagrammen zielten auf eine «abstrakte» oder «geometrische Musik». Deren Bildlichkeit wird anhand der nachgelassenen Skizzen und Schaffensdokumente erstmals im historischen Kontext, in ihrer Operativität und im Zusammenspiel mit anderen kompositionsästhetischen Orientierungen gedeutet.

What does an earthquake in Agadir have to do with a Japanese science fiction film? What sound do stones have? And what do we learn about environmental pollution by listening to the agar agar algae? Drawing on critical sound studies, ethnographic research, and artistic practice, this book offers multivoiced narratives about acoustic practices in Morocco. Gilles Aubry‘s research on the sonic dimensions of our environment, ranges from animal, plant, and mineral voices to ritual practices and technological infrastructures. The Arabic word for these voices in the physical but also in the technological sense is sawt. In collaborations with local musicians, artists and scientists, Aubry explores in experimental settings listening as the basis of „sonic pluralism“. The dense descriptions of the multidisciplinary research are complemented by series of photographies. Via QR codes, the text is linked to audiovisual essays and compositions by the artist. The layout of the book takes up this close linking of digital and analog materials.

Singing the Land: Hebrew Music and Early Zionism in America examines the proliferation and use of popular Hebrew Zionist music amongst American Jewry during the first half of the twentieth century. This music—one part in a greater process of instilling diasporic Zionism in American Jewish communities—represents an early and underexplored means of fostering mainstream American Jewish engagement with the Jewish state and Hebrew national culture as they emerged after Israel declared its independence in 1948. This evolutionary process brought Zionism from being an often-polemical notion in American Judaism at the turn of the twentieth century to a mainstream component of American Jewish life by 1948. Hebrew music ultimately emerged as an important means through which many American Jews physically participated in or ‘performed’ aspects of Zionism and Hebrew national culture from afar. Exploring the history, events, contexts, and tensions that comprised what may be termed the ‘Zionization’ of American Jewry during the first half of the twentieth century, Eli Sperling analyzes primary sources within the historical contexts of Zionist national development and American Jewish life. Singing the Land offers insights into how and why musical frameworks were central to catalyzing American Jewry’s support of the Zionist cause by the 1940s, parallel to firm commitments to their American locale and national identities. The proliferation of this widespread American Jewish-Zionist embrace was achieved through a variety of educational, religious, economic, and political efforts, and Hebrew music was a thread consistent among them all.

Based on the 149 works listed in Renate Grasberger's older catalogue of works, the new catalogue has been expanded to over 300 works, including autograph sketches, study materials, copies and arrangements. A novelty of the new catalogue of works is the inclusion of polyphonic music incipits, in the case of multi-part works also for the beginning of each section., Ausgehend von den 149 Werken, die im älteren Werkverzeichnis von Renate Grasberger gelistet sind, wurde das neue Verzeichnis auf über 300 Werke erweitert, wobei auch autographe Skizzen, Studienmaterialien, Abschriften und Bearbeitungen Berücksichtigung finden.
