Conversion disorder—called functional neurological symptom disorder in the DSM-5—has roots that trace back to antiquity. The term conversion, originating from psychoanalysis, signifies the appearance of physical symptoms as an effort to resolve or convey unconscious and distressing intrapsychic conflicts— "converting" them from manifesting in the mind to manifesting in the body. Despite efforts made in elucidating the neurobiological etiologies of functional neurological symptom disorder, a psychodynamic lens remains indispensable in understanding the patient. This article presents two patients who developed functional neurological symptom disorder, one after a COVID-19 vaccination and one in the context of long COVID. A discussion follows on the intrapersonal, interpersonal, and systemic etiological factors that predispose, precipitate, and perpetuate COVID-related functional neurological symptom disorder. We elaborate on psychodynamic psychological processes and conflicts that may unfold between patients with COVID-related functional neurological symptom disorder and their health care providers. We also share suggestions on how a consultation-liaison psychiatry team may offer support to the primary treating team to facilitate a therapeutic space within which patients with COVID-related functional neurological symptom disorder may recover. Objectives: To identify how quality and design of streets impacts urban stress. Background: Few studies have comprehensively addressed environmental factors affecting stress in urban public spaces. However, a remarkable portion of our everyday life is spent in public spaces, particularly streets. Method: This study seeks to evaluate the effect of three types of streets as major public spaces on stress. These include a street with the dominance of green spaces (A), a motorist-oriented street (B), and a pedestrian street (C). For this purpose, we selected a group of participants (n = 16) aged 20-30, with an equal number of men and women who were generally healthy and had normal stress levels. Participants were asked to wear an electroencephalogram (EEG) headset, walk different streets, and answer the Perceived Restorativeness Scale (PRS) and urban design qualities questionnaires. Results: According to the results, participants experienced the highest stress in street type B and the lowest in type A. Conclusions: Green space and vegetation, a sense of security, privacy and coziness, climatic comfort, and safety of space had the most positive effect on stress reduction. Whereas noise pollution, vehicle traffic, and crowdedness were the most critical factors of stress. Finally, our findings suggest that the component of green space has a more significant effect on stress reduction compared with the elimination of vehicle traffic. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background and purpose: The physical environment of the hospital includes elements and components that improve the quality of the treatment environment and also reduce the stress of the patients. Therefore, this research aims to improve the environmental quality of treatment spaces with the approach of reducing patients' stress. Materials and methods: Based on the research approach, descriptive-analytical has been done. The selection of the research sample in the General Surgery Department (Imam Reza Birjand Hospital) is considered. To collect data, a questionnaire (patient, patient's companion, doctor and staff) was used to prioritize the variables. The validity of the questionnaire was checked by 3Smart PLS software, and the reliability was measured by Cronbach's alpha. Then the collected data was analyzed in SPSS 26 software. Results: The results of this study showed that the prioritization of different criteria from the physical factors of the indoor environment of therapeutic spaces including: convenience, flexibility, nature, light, color, fresh air, sound, texture, furniture arrangement, works of art, and scent are different. It is meaningful. Based on the Kruskal-Wallis test, the most significant difference in the patient's stress reduction priority is the criteria of color, material and texture, fresh air, scent. Based on the Yeoman-Whitney test, gender has a significant difference in the variables of scent, color and fresh air. Conclusion: The results of the research identified that flexibility, convenience, nature, according to the descriptive statistics, have the most influence in reducing the stress of the patients from the perspective of all the participant. Design solutions with the approach of reducing patient stress in medical centers are presented based on the significance of most variables.

Psychodynamic psychiatric practice during the COVID-19 pandemic has required most clinicians to conduct treatment online or by telephone. The result is a natural experiment that appears to endorse the efficacy of distance therapy. Consequently, the brick-and-mortar consulting room is no longer the presumptive therapeutic space for the conduct of psychodynamic psychiatric or other treatment approaches. The therapeutic space is reconceived as the place or medium intended for treatment and is distinguished from both the therapeutic relationship and conduct of treatment that occurs within that space. How different therapeutic spaces impact treatment is discussed with specific application to psychodynamic psychiatry and virtual venues. The "digital object" becomes a new presence; the patient's freedom to disclose mental contents is retained though empathic attunement is diminished; a shift in power dynamics may occur; timing of sessions gains greater precision in the online environment. Since the 1990s, New Zealand mental health policy has shifted from a focus on the management of symptoms and risk to the recovery of psychological, social, cultural, and physical well‐being. Despite a vision for recovery‐oriented services being integrated within national and regional policies, there is growing concern that barriers to recovery‐oriented service provision continue to exist. Such barriers include the attitudes, skills, and knowledge of front‐line staff, as well as system issues. This study explored the experience and meaning of recovery‐oriented practice for 10 nurses working in an acute inpatient mental health service. A phenomenological and hermeneutic lens was used to explore the nurses' experience of working in a recovery‐focused manner alongside service users. Stories of practice were collected from participants through open‐ended conversational interviews. Transcribed narratives were analysed to explore taken‐for‐granted aspects of working in acute mental health care and to uncover the meaning of being recovery‐oriented in this setting. Findings revealed that although the experience and meaning of recovery‐focused care varied among nurses, there were common elements in the practice accounts. The accounts highlighted the nurses' role in creating different therapeutic spaces to promote safety, relational commitment, and healing for service users. However, the nurses faced challenges to recovery‐oriented care within the team hierarchical culture and the broader service systems. The nurses were, at times, fearless in advocating for service users and recognized that this was essential for developing recovery‐focused services. Introduction: Telehealth refers to health care information that is delivered through a variety of media rather than through face-to-face meetings between patients and providers. In light of the recent worldwide COVID-19 pandemic, counseling and therapy have been profoundly and irrevocably affected by social distancing and isolation. This led to challenging therapists to find creative ways of intervention, especially in the humanistic-experiential methods. Objectives: The objective of this paper is to highlight an optimal way of therapeutic work in an experiential-unifying manner during the COVID-19 pandemic and lockdown. Methods: The main methods used are online counseling and the experiential-unifying psychotherapeutic approach. Thus, we adapted the experiential method to online work, in which the therapist and client were connected only through the screens in front of them. Results: Two case studies reveal the effectiveness of experiential work (including gestalt techniques or symbolic and expressive creative techniques) in telehealth conditions. Thus, online counseling offers the possibility to create an adequate therapeutic framework in which the therapeutic relationship is not affected. COVID-19, Black Lives Matter, and financial and political turmoil have uprooted our sense of personal and collective safety and predictability. Analysts are faced with professional and personal challenges, as well as a charge to help make sense of this new normal. This reflective piece focuses on the author's thoughts on a wounded and bleeding temenos. She grapples with the new reality of analysis carried out via technology (e.g. Zoom or telehealth). The article interweaves personal experiences with theoretical and professional reflections on two Jewish myths that relate to creating temenos or sacred space in the face of ancient disasters. Specifically, she discusses Choni HaMagel, a first-century BCE Jewish scholar and miracle-maker who prays for relief from a drought from inside a sacred circle. She also tells the tale of four Chassidic Rebbes who face crisis from a sacred space in the forest. The author frames this piece with two personal and numinous dreams dreamt during the pandemic; one offering scenes of destruction and one offering hope for a future transformation. Research highlights that recovery from substance use is a process facilitated by relational factors, resources and therapeutic practices embedded in places conducive to recovery. However, the accessibility of such resources for those with complex needs, and the therapeutic potential of peer-led spaces needs contextualizing in both time and place. We examined the characteristics of a social space employing a noninterventionist peer-led approach for active alcohol users. Individuals prioritized the management of everyday life over recovery, especially abstinence. This space acted as a replacement "jigsaw"; interrupting the temporal, spatial and social aspects of active use. BACKGROUND: In recent years, among managers and designers of health-care spaces, there has been a growing tendency to move toward hospital design by combining patient perceptions and expectations of the physical environment of the care area. The main idea of this study was to present a conceptual model of hospital architecture in our country with a patient-centered approach based on some factors that were affecting the sense of place. This model determined the architectural features of treatment spaces from a patient's lived experience that could have a positive mental effect on patients as well. The main question of the research was how to adapt the objective perception to the patient's mental perception to create a sense of place in the hospital space? MATERIALS AND METHODS: This research was qualitative with a phenomenological approach, conducted between July and December 2020. Purposeful sampling consisted of 23 patients, 13 males in the male surgery unit and 10 females in the gynecology unit, who were interviewed in-depth. They were hospitalized for at least 3 days in two hospitals (Dr. Pirooz in Lahijan and Ghaem in Rasht). The data were analyzed by the Colaizzi method. RESULTS: The results consisted of 530 primary codes, 57 subthemes, and 7 main themes. The main themes were hospital location, access to hospital, hospital identity, hospital dependency, hospital attachment, human interactions in the hospital, and hospital evaluation. CONCLUSION: The hospital form guided the patient, and the hospital function directed and obviated the patient's needs. The healing environment and human interactions with it caused the patient to be satisfied with the hospital environment.

This article draws on a study of palliative care group work, developed by the researcher and inspired by the Asklepian healing temples in Ancient Greece (Kelly, 2017). Using intuitive inquiry, which incorporates hermeneutic, heuristic, and transpersonal elements, this study explores the nature of the therapeutic space in palliative care groups that work in and with nature, using imagery, ritual, and bodywork. From archival material and interview data, five final lenses emerged that were considered integral to creating a healing space and environment, and which were inherently interconnected. Separated only for the clarity of discussion, these themes were named as pilgrimage, place, nature, imagination, and presence. This article highlights the resonance between the intuitive inquiry and the research topic, which utilizes imagery, bodywork, and ritual as ways of knowing and experiencing the world. In particular, the discussion incorporates the embodied use of a memory theater as a vehicle for exploration and insight and Marie Angelo's (2005) invitation to allow images to speak in research. This approach offers an opportunity to develop a broader, deeper, more expansive exploration, with embodied imagination an integral part of the process. Intuitive inquiry's five iterative cycles provided a rigorous framework, which engendered a deeper understanding of the researcher's practice in end-of-life care, with implications for practice and education, and contributed to the exploration of creative and embodied experiences as authentic and legitimate ways of knowing in research. Background: Elements of the built environment can impact on an occupant's frame of mind, their interaction with other occupants and their physiological state. It is anticipated that counselling spaces will have some influence on clients' thoughts, feelings and behaviours and potentially affect the therapeutic process. Aim: To examine clients' experiences and perspectives of counselling room design, with the aim of identifying what they considered to be an "ideal" counselling room. Method: A descriptive qualitative design was employed to examine 15 clients' perspectives of counselling spaces. Semi‐structured interviews and a previously unused method of model design, in which participants created and recreated models of counselling rooms, were used to encourage participants to express their views of these spaces. Findings: Thematic analysis revealed an interaction between physical–spatial features and clients' thoughts and feelings. The driving force behind clients' design preferences was the desire for a sense of physical and emotional comfort, which was achieved by creating a welcoming, relaxed and homely environment that promoted a sense of safety and security. Moreover, an association between clients' opinions of the counsellor and the space in which they were counselled was revealed. Implications: The design and layout of counselling rooms affect clients, particularly women who are feeling vulnerable. While we cannot create a space that fulfils every client's needs, we believe that clients should be included in the decision‐making process to promote their sense of safety and comfort because this impacts on the therapeutic practice. Background and Aim: Cancer is one of the stressful problems of humans life. The concept of cancer will included a complex problems such as cancer pain, physical and psychological, social, and cultural pains. The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between the physical environment of hospital and quality of life in cancer patients. Materials and Methods: In this mixed study (qualitative – quantitative), 60 cancer patients referred to Imam Khomeini hospital of Ardabil and Shahid Beheshti hospital of Hamadan in 2013 were selected randomly. The data were collected by interview and observation and using the SL-36 quality of life questionnaire and also structured questionnaires was used. Results: The analysis confirmed that images of natural scenes and artificial plants in hospital rooms increase the quality of life. See watching the outside plant, even outside the room, increase the quality of life. Conclusion: This study confirms the quality of life increasing properties of natural elements in healthcare environment.

In the social sciences, there is increasing interest in spatial practices and the meaning of places. The meaning of the psychotherapeutic room and its boundaries has traditionally been underlined in psychodynamic practice. In this study we investigated how clinical psychologists, working from different perspectives and with varying interventions and populations understand and use the consulting room. Five clinical psychologists were interviewed about how they perceive and use consulting rooms. The interviews were analysed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. The participants understood the consulting room as a logistic unit but also as a welcoming place for relational encounters and sensed that spatial stability was important for their capacity to be fully attentive to their clients. Moreover, technological booking systems could hinder clinical work. The results were understood with respect to Winnicott's theories of transitional space and holding. In sum, the importance of the room does not seem to be of concern exclusively to psychodynamic psychologists. On the contrary, it seems as if psychologists working with varying interventions and from different perspectives emphasise stable and personal consulting rooms that permit them to adapt to the needs of the clients, be attentive, and avoid disturbances. This paper introduces a concept the authors refer to as private enactments. While the majority of the relational literature has focused on the more dramatic enactments in treatment, private enactments emerge as the therapist becomes aware through reveries and personal associations that she is facing a parallel struggle with the patient, one shaped by the unfolding relational unconscious cocreated in treatment. These moments are private in the sense that the therapist experiences them internally after a period of sustained, often confusing private reflection during moments of clinical impasse. The authors elucidate this process with two cases with traumatized patients that highlight how the eventual resolution of private enactments offered new perspective on the clinical stalemate, novel understanding that evolved into constructive interventions after both authors became aware of shared, dissociated conflicts involving threads of trauma and loss, leading further to mutual reparation. Far from being dramatic moments acted out between therapist and patient, or far from simply involving unresolved emotional conflicts in the therapist, the cases of help illustrate how these subtle, often unnoticed musings operating sub rosa can highlight a shared, cocreated struggle that if identified can provide new insight and relief from impasse, so that we change as our patients change by metabolizing our private associations. Place attachment is defined as a place in which people feel emotionally connected to, as well as the emotional and psychological connection that forms between people and their important places (Scannell & Gifford, 2010). Place attachment has not been applied to the concept of therapeutic space, yet the overlap in these two concepts is significant for counselors. The spatial aspects of therapeutic intervention receive marginal attention in the practice and discourse of therapeutic professions. Currently, influenced by the classic Freudian tradition, the central therapeutic space of social workers and psychologists is the agency and the office. Despite the fact that models of home therapy have been developed over the years, its practice has remained marginal in the professional discourse. This article introduces the concept of intervention in a real-life context as a theoretical and practical framework for work with people in poverty that takes place outside the agency. The article is based on a qualitative study that examined the ongoing experiences of nine women who participated in an intervention programme based on the poverty-aware social work paradigm. The findings revealed that intervention in a real-life context takes place in four major realms: the home space, in which meetings were held regularly; the utilisation-of-rights space; the emergency space; and the professional-friendly space. The discussion sheds light on intervention in a real-life context as a means to practise the psychodynamic concept of holding in working with people who live in poverty. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: The physical spaces in which we conduct psychotherapy are an important yet underacknowledged aspect of psychotherapeutic work. Although a few contemporary publications have provided suggestions for the creation of welcoming, comfortable, and efficient practice spaces, considerations of what it means to transform a room into a therapeutic space have remained largely absent from recent literature. This paper reviews the existing literature on this subject and describes the ways in which the therapist's office is intimately tied to several processes of the therapy itself, by way of creating an adaptive environment that is able to meet the needs of both therapist and client over the course of their work together. El presente artículo se propone analizar tres espacios representativos de la trilogía de Esther Tusquets — la casa, el cuerpo femenino y el mar — con el objetivo de poner de manifiesto su carácter terapéutico y, con ello, la relevancia del elemento espacial para el universo ficcional de la autora. Se trata de unos espacios íntimamente ligados a los procesos de rehabilitación interior de unos personajes en crisis, razón por la cual ostentarán no solo una dimensión física, sino también una simbólica. En virtud de todo esto, las casas, el cuerpo femenino y el mar sobrepasan la condición de meros continentes para convertirse en unos lugares terapéuticos que cumplen la función primordial de Refugio. The present essay attempts to analyze three representative spaces from Esther Tusquets’s trilogy — the home, the female body and the sea —, aiming to emphasize their therapeutic character and, by this, the relevance of the spatial element within the fictional universe of the author. As we will point out, these spaces are in close connection with the inner rehabilitation processes of some characters in a difficult situation, which is why they have not only a physical dimension, but also a symbolic one. By virtue of this fact, the home, the female body and the sea go beyond the condition of simple continents and become therapeutic centres which fulfill the main role of a Refuge. In a pilot project, members of a community garden explored how they might provide better end-of-life support for their regional community. As part of the project, a literature review was undertaken to investigate the nexus between community gardens and end-of-life experiences (including grief and bereavement) in academic research. This article documents the findings of that review. The authors discovered there is little academic material that focuses specifically on community gardens and end-of-life experiences, but nonetheless the two subjects were seen to intersect. Background: Family-friendly spaces for children and families to visit inpatient mental health units are recommended in international mental health guidelines as one way to provide service delivery that is responsive to the needs of parent-consumers and families. There is a lack of evidence on the implementation of family-friendly spaces or Family Rooms. This study aimed to explore the development, role, and function of Family Rooms in four mental health inpatient units in a local health district in NSW Australia. Methods: An exploratory descriptive design using multiple data sources was employed. Methods included Family Room usage and parental status data over a 12 week period, an open-ended questionnaire, and semi-structured interviews with 20 nurses. Results: Available parental status data indicated that between 8-14 % of inpatients were parents of dependent children under 18. Family Room usage was multipurpose and used specifically for children & families 29 % of the time. As spaces in the units, Family Rooms were perceived as acknowledging of the importance of family, and providing comfortable, secure spaces for parent-consumers and their children and family to maintain connections. Units did not have local policies or guidelines on the development, maintenance, and/or use of the rooms. Conclusions: Despite long-standing recognition of the need to identify consumers' parental status, there remains a lack of systematic processes for identifying parents in mental health inpatient services nationally. Family Rooms as spaces within inpatient units acknowledge the importance of families and are a step towards provision of family-focused mental health care. Abstract: Proteins are involved in almost every action of every organism by interacting with other small molecules including drugs. Computationally predicting the drug–protein interactions is particularly important in speeding up the process of developing novel drugs. To borrow the information from existing drug–protein interactions, we need to define the similarity among proteins and the similarity among drugs. Usually these similarities are defined based on one single data source and many methods have been proposed. However, the availability of many genomic and chemogenomic data sources allows us to integrate these useful data sources to improve the predictions. Thus a great challenge is how to integrate these heterogeneous data sources. Here, we propose a kernel-based method to predict drug–protein interactions by integrating multiple types of data. Specially, we collect drug pharmacological and therapeutic effects, drug chemical structures, and protein genomic information to characterize the drug–target interactions, then integrate them by a kernel function within a support vector machine (SVM)-based predictor. With this data fusion technology, we establish the drug–protein interactions from a collections of data sources. Our new method is validated on four classes of drug target proteins, including enzymes, ion channels (ICs), G-protein couple receptors (GPCRs), and nuclear receptors (NRs). We find that every single data source is predictive and integration of different data sources allows the improvement of accuracy, i.e., data integration can uncover more experimentally observed drug–target interactions upon the same levels of false positive rate than single data source based methods. The functional annotation analysis indicates that our new predictions are worthy of future experimental validation. Background: This paper critiques the model for non-verbal communication referred to as SOLER (which stands for: "Sit squarely"; "Open posture"; "Lean towards the other"; "Eye contact; "Relax"). It has been approximately thirty years since Egan (1975) introduced his acronym SOLER as an aid for teaching and learning about non-verbal communication. Aim: There is evidence that the SOLER framework has been widely used in nurse education with little published critical appraisal. A new acronym that might be appropriate for non-verbal communication skills training and education is proposed and this is SURETY (which stands for "Sit at an angle"; "Uncross legs and arms"; "Relax"; "Eye contact"; "Touch"; "Your intuition"). The new model: The proposed model advances the SOLER model by including the use of touch and the importance of individual intuition is emphasised. The project described in this article addresses the therapeutic use of physical space in an outpatient counseling facility. It was theorized that an improved facility environment could be used as a practice tool when working with a vulnerable population. The authors undertook the project with limited time and finances. The process of the change project is discussed in detail in an attempt to encourage other counseling facilities and social service agencies to consider such an effort. Related literature from varied fields is reviewed. The article also relays client and staff feedback regarding the redecorated space and addresses design considerations such as the relative strengths and drawbacks to involving clients and staff in the process. The article offers a psychosocial analysis of the construction of Muslim identities. It argues that identities are socially constructed by a complex of negotiation and are showed on a matrix of social relationships. Psychoanalytic concepts are drawn upon to show how the external world can structure the internal world and sense of self. However, Muslim youth are contesting socially demonizing discourses by self-defining and asserting their own identities.

The importance of the temenos as a metaphor to conceptualize therapeutic containment is discussed. Jung drew the analogy between the consulting room and the temenos, at the centre of the Greek Temple as a sacred and inviolate place where the analysand might encounter the Self. Although Jung believed that whether called or not, the gods would appear, under certain conditions, patients may experience 'temenos lost', the loss of the holding function of the analytic space. Two cases are presented in which temenos issues played a central role. In one case, an unorthodox method was used to preserve the analytic container during the absence of the analyst and in the other, the impact of an extra-analytical encounter had a dramatic effect on the holding function of the temenos. A discussion is presented of the appropriate circumstances in which analysts may deviate from traditional analytic practice in order to preserve the temenos and transform a 'temenos lost' into a 'temenos regained'. Background: In recent years, among managers and designers of health-care spaces, there has been a growing tendency to move toward hospital design by combining patient perceptions and expectations of the physical environment of the care area. The main idea of this study was to present a conceptual model of hospital architecture in our country with a patient-centered approach based on some factors that were affecting the sense of place. This model determined the architectural features of treatment spaces from a patient's lived experience that could have a positive mental effect on patients as well. The main question of the research was how to adapt the objective perception to the patient's mental perception to create a sense of place in the hospital space?, Materials and Methods: This research was qualitative with a phenomenological approach, conducted between July and December 2020. Purposeful sampling consisted of 23 patients, 13 males in the male surgery unit and 10 females in the gynecology unit, who were interviewed in-depth. They were hospitalized for at least 3 days in two hospitals (Dr. Pirooz in Lahijan and Ghaem in Rasht). The data were analyzed by the Colaizzi method., Results: The results consisted of 530 primary codes, 57 subthemes, and 7 main themes. The main themes were hospital location, access to hospital, hospital identity, hospital dependency, hospital attachment, human interactions in the hospital, and hospital evaluation., Conclusion: The hospital form guided the patient, and the hospital function directed and obviated the patient's needs. This paper describes an Experience-based Co-design (EBCD) project that aimed to increase patient activity within an acute stroke unit. We apply the concept of liminality to explore ways in which the EBCD process, a form of Participatory Action Research, may dilute or even dissolve social hierarchies and challenge assumptions about practices and constraints in this care setting, thereby opening up possibilities for transformation that enhances the therapeutic value of the space for patients and care providers alike. By occasioning a liminal phase of possibility for change, the work of one co-design group explored in detail here suggests that, in this process, the sociomaterial interactions involving patients, family members, staff, and the physical space are refashioned and re-inscribed in transformed 'emplaced' relationships of care.
