Search

The study of interaction between electromagnetism and elementary particles is a long-standing topic in physics. Likewise, the connection between particle physics and emergent phenomena in condensed matter physics is a recurring theme and condensed matter physics has often provided a platform for investigating the interplay between particles and fields in cases that have not been observed in high-energy physics, so far. Here, using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we provide a new example of this by visualizing the electronic structure of a noncentrosymmetric magnetic Weyl semimetal candidate NdAlSi in both the paramagnetic and ferrimagnetic states. We observe surface Fermi arcs and bulk Weyl fermion dispersion as well as the regulation of Weyl fermions by ferrimagnetism. Our results establish NdAlSi as a magnetic Weyl semimetal and provide the first experimental observation of ferrimagnetic regulation of Weyl fermions in condensed matter., 19 pages, 4 figures

Protected and spin-polarized transport channels are the hallmark of topological insulators, coming along with an intrinsic strong spin-orbit coupling. Here we identified such corresponding chiral states in epitaxially grown zigzag graphene nanoribbons (zz-GNRs), albeit with an extremely weak spin-orbit interaction. While the bulk of the monolayer zz-GNR is fully suspended across a SiC facet, the lower edge merges into the SiC(0001) substrate and reveals a surface state at the Fermi energy, which is extended along the edge and splits in energy toward the bulk. All of the spectroscopic details are precisely described within a tight binding model incorporating a Haldane term and strain effects. The concomitant breaking of time-reversal symmetry without the application of external magnetic fields is supported by ballistic transport revealing a conduction of G = e2/h.

The recently discovered AV3Sb5 (A=K, Rb, Cs) family, possessing V kagome nets, has received considerable attention due to the topological electronic structure and intriguing correlated phenomena, including an exotic charge density wave (CDW) and superconductivity. Detailed electronic structure studies are essential to unravel the characteristics and origin of the CDW as well as its interplay with superconductivity. Here, we present angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements for CsV3Sb5 at multiple temperatures and photon energies to reveal the nature of the CDW from an electronic structure perspective. We present evidence for a three-dimensional (3D) CDW order. In the process we also pinpoint a surface state attributed to a Cs terminated surface. This state was previously attributed to band folding band due to a CDW along the c direction or a quantum well state from quantum confinement. The CDW expected 2-fold lattice reconstruction along c axis is observed to be a quadrupling of the unit cell, thus for the first time directly demonstrating the 3D nature of the CDW from the electronic structure perspective. Moreover, this 3D CDW configuration originates from two distinct types of distortions in adjacent kagome layers. These present results not only provide key insights into the nature of the unconventional CDW in CsV3Sb5 but also provides an important reference for further studies on the relationship between the CDW and superconductivity., 19 pages, 4 figures

We present a combined experimental and theoretical study of the two-dimensional electron states at the iridium-silicide surface of the antiferromagnet GdIr2Si2 above and below the Neel temperature. Using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) we find a significant spin-orbit splitting of the surface states in the paramagnetic phase. By means of ab initio density-functional-theory (DFT) calculations we establish that the surface electron states that reside in the projected band gap around the M¯ point exhibit very different spin structures which are governed by the conventional and the cubic Rashba effect. The latter is reflected in a triple spin winding, i.e., the surface electron spin reveals three complete rotations upon moving once around the constant energy contours. Below the Neel temperature, our ARPES measurements show an intricate photoemission intensity picture characteristic of a complex magnetic domain structure. The orientation of the domains, however, can be clarified from a comparative analysis of the ARPES data and their DFT modeling. To characterize a single magnetic domain picture, we resort to the calculations and scrutinize the interplay of the Rashba spin-orbit coupling field with the in-plane exchange field, provided by the ferromagnetically ordered 4f moments of the near-surface Gd layer. Graphene pn-junctions offer a rich portfolio of intriguing physical phenomena. They stand as the potential building blocks for a broad spectrum of future technologies, ranging from electronic lenses analogous to metamaterials in optics, to high-performance photodetectors important for a variety of optoelectronic applications. The production of graphene pn-junctions and their precise structuring at the nanoscale remains to be a challenge. In this work, a scalable method for fabricating periodic nanoarrays of graphene pn-junctions on a technologically viable semiconducting SiC substrate is introduced. Via H-intercalation, 1D confined armchair graphene nanoribbons are transformed into a single 2D graphene sheet rolling over 6H-SiC mesa structures. Due to the different surface terminations of the basal and vicinal SiC planes constituting the mesa structures, different types of charge carriers are locally induced into the graphene layer. Using angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy, the electronic band structure of the two graphene regions are selectively measured, finding two symmetrically doped phases with p-type being located on the basal planes and n-type on the facets. The results demonstrate that through a careful structuring of the substrate, combined with H-intercalation, integrated networks of graphene pn-junctions could be engineered at the nanoscale, paving the way for the realization of novel optoelectronic device concepts. The interplay between spin–orbit coupling and structural inversion symmetry breaking in solids has generated much interest due to the nontrivial spin and magnetic textures which can result. Such studies are typically focused on systems where large atomic number elements lead to strong spin–orbit coupling, in turn rendering electronic correlations weak. In contrast, here we investigate the temperature-dependent electronic structure of [Formula: see text] , a [Formula: see text] oxide metal for which both correlations and spin–orbit coupling are pronounced and in which octahedral tilts and rotations combine to mediate both global and local inversion symmetry-breaking polar distortions. Our angle-resolved photoemission measurements reveal the destruction of a large hole-like Fermi surface upon cooling through a coupled structural and spin-reorientation transition at 48 K, accompanied by a sudden onset of quasiparticle coherence. We demonstrate how these result from band hybridization mediated by a hidden Rashba-type spin–orbit coupling. This is enabled by the bulk structural distortions and unlocked when the spin reorients perpendicular to the local symmetry-breaking potential at the Ru sites. We argue that the electronic energy gain associated with the band hybridization is actually the key driver for the phase transition, reflecting a delicate interplay between spin–orbit coupling and strong electronic correlations and revealing a route to control magnetic ordering in solids.

Polar distortions in solids give rise to the well-known functionality of switchable macroscopic polarisation in ferroelectrics and, when combined with strong spin-orbit coupling, can mediate giant spin splittings of electronic states. While typically found in insulators, ferroelectric-like distortions can remain robust against increasing itineracy, giving rise to so-called "polar metals". Here, we investigate the temperature-dependent electronic structure of Ca$_3$Ru$_2$O$_7$, a correlated oxide metal in which octahedral tilts and rotations combine to mediate pronounced polar distortions. Our angle-resolved photoemission measurements reveal the destruction of a large hole-like Fermi surface upon cooling through a coupled structural and spin-reorientation transition at 48 K, accompanied by a sudden onset of quasiparticle coherence. The downscaling of silicon-based structures and proto-devices has now reached the single atom scale, representing an important milestone for the development of a silicon-based quantum computer. One especially notable platform for atomic scale device fabrication is the so-called SiP delta-layer, consisting of an ultra dense and sharp layer of dopants within a semiconductor host. Whilst several alternatives exist, phosphorus dopants in silicon have drawn the most interest, and it is on this platform that many quantum proto-devices have been successfully demonstrated. Motivated by this, both calculations and experiments have been dedicated to understanding the electronic structure of the SiP delta-layer platform. In this work, we use high resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) to reveal the structure of the electronic states which exist because of the high dopant density of the SiP delta-layer. In contrast to published theoretical work, we resolve three distinct bands, the most occupied of which shows a large anisotropy and significant deviation from simple parabolic behaviour. We investigate the possible origins of this fine structure, and conclude that it is primarily a consequence of the dielectric constant being large (ca. double that of bulk Si). Incorporating this factor into tight binding calculations leads to a major revision of band structure; specifically, the existence of a third band, the separation of the bands, and the departure from purely parabolic behaviour. The ability to define an off state in logic electronics is the key ingredient that is impossible to fulfill using a conventional pristine graphene layer, due to the absence of an electronic bandgap. For years, this property has been the missing element for incorporating graphene into next-generation field effect transistors. In this work, we grow high-quality armchair graphene nanoribbons on the sidewalls of 6H-SiC mesa structures. Angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES) and scanning tunneling spectroscopy measurements reveal the development of a width-dependent semiconducting gap driven by quantum confinement effects. Furthermore, ARPES demonstrates an ideal one-dimensional electronic behavior that is realized in a graphene-based environment, consisting of well-resolved subbands, dispersing and non-dispersing along and across the ribbons respectively. Our experimental findings, coupled with theoretical tight-binding calculations, set the grounds for a deeper exploration of quantum confinement phenomena and may open intriguing avenues for new low-power electronics., Here, the authors investigate armchair graphene nanoribbons by angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy, and show the development of a width-dependent semiconducting gap driven by quantum confinement effects, and an ideal one-dimensional electronic behaviour.

The growth of Bi on both the In-terminated (A) face and the As-terminated (B) face of InAs(1 1 1) has been investigated by low-energy electron diffraction, scanning tunnelling microscopy, and photoelectron spectroscopy using synchrotron radiation. The changes upon Bi deposition of the In 4d and Bi 5d 5/2 photoelectron signals allow to get a comprehensive picture of the Bi/InAs(1 1 1) interface. From the early stage the Bi growth on the A face is epitaxial, contrary to that on the B face that proceeds via the formation of islands. Angle-resolved photoelectron spectra show that the electronic structure of a Bi deposit of ≈10 bi-layers on the A face is identical to that of bulk Bi, while more than ≈30 bi-layers are needed for the B face. Both bulk and surface electronic states observed are well accounted for by fully relativistic ab initio calculations performed using the one-step model of photoemission. These calculations are used to analyse the dichroic photoemission data recorded in the vicinity of the Fermi level around the Γ ¯ point of the Brillouin zone.

The calculated electronic band structure of graphene is relatively simple, with a Fermi surface consisting only of six Dirac cones in the first Brillouin zone-one at each (K) over bar. In contrast, angle-resolved photoemission measurements of graphene grown on SiC(0001) often show six satellite Dirac cones surrounding each primary Dirac cone. Recent studies have reported two further Dirac cones along the (Gamma) over bar-(K) over bar line, and argue that these are not photoelectron diffraction artifacts but real bands deriving from a modulation of the ionic potential in the graphene layer. Here we present measurements using linearly polarized synchrotron light which show all of these replicas as well as several additional ones. Using information obtained from dark corridor orientations and angular warping, we demonstrate that all but one of these additional features-including those previously assigned as real initial-state bands-are possible to explain by simple final-state photoelectron diffraction.

The linewidths of the electronic bands originating from the electron-phonon coupling in graphene are analyzed based on model tight-binding calculations and experimental angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) data. Our calculations confirm the prediction that the high-energy optical phonons provide the most essential contribution to the phonon-induced linewidth of the two upper occupied $\sigma$ bands near the $\bar{\Gamma}$-point. For larger binding energies of these bands, as well as for the $\pi$ band, we find evidence for a substantial lifetime broadening from interband scattering $\pi \rightarrow \sigma$ and $\sigma \rightarrow \pi$, respectively, driven by the out-of-plane ZA acoustic phonons. The essential features of the calculated $\sigma$ band linewidths are in agreement with recent published ARPES data [F. Mazzola et al., Phys.~Rev.~B. 95, 075430 (2017)] and of the $\pi$ band linewidth with ARPES data presented here., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

The 'double Dirac cone' 2D topological interface states found on the (001) faces of topological crystalline insulators such as Pb$_{1-x}$Sn$_{x}$Se feature degeneracies located away from time reversal invariant momenta, and are a manifestation of both mirror symmetry protection and valley interactions. Similar shifted degeneracies in 1D interface states have been highlighted as a potential basis for a topological transistor, but realizing such a device will require a detailed understanding of the intervalley physics involved. In addition, the operation of this or similar devices outside of ultra-high vacuum will require encapsulation, and the consequences of this for the topological interface state must be understood. Here we address both topics for the case of 2D surface states using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. We examine bulk Pb$_{1-x}$Sn$_{x}$Se(001) crystals overgrown with PbSe, realizing trivial/topological heterostructures. We demonstrate that the valley interaction that splits the two Dirac cones at each $\bar{X}$ is extremely sensitive to atomic-scale details of the surface, exhibiting non-monotonic changes as PbSe deposition proceeds. This includes an apparent total collapse of the splitting for sub-monolayer coverage, eliminating the Lifshitz transition. For a large overlayer thickness we observe quantized PbSe states, possibly reflecting a symmetry confinement mechanism at the buried topological interface.

Porphyrins bearing a single bioconjugatable group and a single water-solubilization motif in a trans-AB-architecture (with no other substituents) provide a compact design of value for studies in diverse disciplines. Established synthetic methods have been employed to prepare four new free base porphyrins and one Mn ( III ) chelate. The hydrophilic motif includes 4-N-methylpyridinium, 2,4,6-tris(carboxymethoxy)phenyl, 2,6-bis(phosphonomethoxy)phenyl, and carboxy; the bioconjugatable unit includes carboxy, maleimido, and N-hydroxysuccinimido (NHS) ester. Bioconjugation experiments with a protected porphyrin-diphosphate or unprotected porphyrin-diphosphonate were examined in organic solution or water, respectively. Both approaches were employed to conjugate to the ε-amino group of Lys11 in AcKPV- NH 2, a tripeptide fragment [ Ac -α-MSH(11-13)- NH 2] of melanocyte stimulating hormone, yielding porphyrin-peptide conjugates.

A comprehensive understanding of spin-polarized photoemission is crucial for accessing the electronic structure of spin-orbit coupled materials. Yet, the impact of the final state in the photoemission process on the photoelectron spin has been difficult to assess in these systems. We present experiments for the spin-orbit split states in a Bi-Ag surface alloy showing that the alteration of the final state with energy may cause a complete reversal of the photoelectron spin polarization. We explain the effect on the basis of ab initio one-step photoemission theory and describe how it originates from linear dichroism in the angular distribution of photoelectrons. Our analysis shows that the modulated photoelectron spin polarization reflects the intrinsic spin density of the surface state being sampled differently depending on the final state, and it indicates linear dichroism as a natural probe of spin-orbit coupling at surfaces., New manuscript with a changed interpretation and theoretical description of the experimental results

First-principles studies of the electron-phonon coupling in graphene predict a high coupling strength for the $\sigma$ band with $\lambda$ values of up to 0.9. Near the top of the $\sigma$ band, $\lambda$ is found to be $\approx 0.7$. This value is consistent with the recently observed kinks in the $\sigma$ band dispersion by angle-resolved photoemission. While the photoemission intensity from the $\sigma$ band is strongly influenced by matrix elements due to sub-lattice interference, these effects differ significantly for data taken in the first and neighboring Brillouin zones. This can be exploited to disentangle the influence of matrix elements and electron-phonon coupling. A rigorous analysis of the experimentally determined complex self-energy using Kramers-Kronig transformations further supports the assignment of the observed kinks to strong electron-phonon coupling and yields a coupling constant of $0.6(1)$, in excellent agreement with the calculations., Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures

Transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are renowned for their rich and varied properties. They range from metals and superconductors to strongly spin-orbit-coupled semiconductors and charge-density-wave systems, with their single-layer variants one of the most prominent current examples of two-dimensional materials beyond graphene. Their varied ground states largely depend on the transition metal d-electron-derived electronic states, on which the vast majority of attention has been concentrated to date. Here, we focus on the chalcogen-derived states. From density-functional theory calculations together with spin- and angle- resolved photoemission, we find that these generically host type-II three-dimensional bulk Dirac fermions as well as ladders of topological surface states and surface resonances. We demonstrate how these naturally arise within a single p-orbital manifold as a general consequence of a trigonal crystal field, and as such can be expected across a large number of compounds. Already, we demonstrate their existence in six separate TMDs, opening routes to tune, and ultimately exploit, their topological physics., 10 pages, 4 figures

A series of four stable synthetic bacteriochlorins was tested in vitro in HeLa cells for their potential in photodynamic therapy (PDT). The parent bacteriochlorin (BC), dicyano derivative (NC)(2)BC and corresponding zinc chelate (NC)(2)BC-Zn and palladium chelate (NC)(2)BC-Pd were studied. Direct dilution of a solution of bacteriochlorin in an organic solvent (N,N-dimethylacetamide) into serum-containing medium was compared with the dilution of bacteriochlorin in Cremophor EL (CrEL; polyoxyethylene glycerol triricinoleate) micelles into the same medium. CrEL generally reduced aggregation (as indicated by absorption and fluorescence) and increased activity up to tenfold (depending on bacteriochlorin), although it decreased cellular uptake. The order of PDT activity against HeLa human cancer cells after 24 h incubation and illumination with 10 J cm(-2) of near-infrared (NIR) light is (NC)(2)BC-Pd (LD(50)=25 nM) > (NC)(2)BC > (NC)(2)BC-Zn ≈ BC. Subcellular localization was determined to be in the endoplasmic reticulum, mitochondria and lysosomes, depending on the bacteriochlorin. (NC)(2)BC-Pd showed PDT-mediated damage to mitochondria and lysosomes, and the greatest production of hydroxyl radicals as determined using a hydroxyphenylfluorescein probe. The incorporation of cyano substituents provides an excellent motif for the enhancement of the photoactivity and photostability of bacteriochlorins as PDT photosensitizers.

The discovery of topological insulators (TIs), materials with bulk band gaps and protected cross-gap surface states, in compounds such as Bi2Se3 has generated much interest in identifying topological surface states (TSSs) in other classes of materials. In particular, recent theory calculations suggest that TSSs may be found in half-Heusler ternary compounds. If experimentally realizable, this would provide a materials platform for entirely new heterostructure spintronic devices that make use of the structurally-identical but electronically-varied nature of Heusler compounds. Here, we show the presence of a TSS in epitaxially grown thin films of the half-Heusler compound PtLuSb. Spin and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), complemented by theoretical calculations, reveals a surface state with linear dispersion and a helical tangential spin texture consistent with previous predictions. The topological crystalline insulator tin telluride is known to host superconductivity when doped with indium (Sn$_{1-x}$In$_{x}$Te), and for low indium contents ($x=0.04$) it is known that the topological surface states are preserved. Here we present the growth, characterization and angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy analysis of samples with much heavier In doping (up to $x\approx0.4$), a regime where the superconducting temperature is increased nearly fourfold. We demonstrate that despite strong p-type doping, Dirac-like surface states persist.

Topological insulators are a novel class of quantum materials in which time-reversal symmetry, relativistic (spin-orbit) effects and an inverted band structure result in electronic metallic states on the surfaces of bulk crystals. These helical states exhibit a Dirac-like energy dispersion across the bulk bandgap, and they are topologically protected. Recent theoretical proposals have suggested the existence of topological crystalline insulators, a novel class of topological insulators in which crystalline symmetry replaces the role of time-reversal symmetry in topological protection [1,2]. In this study, we show that the narrow-gap semiconductor Pb(1-x)Sn(x)Se is a topological crystalline insulator for x=0.23. Temperature-dependent magnetotransport measurements and angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy demonstrate that the material undergoes a temperature-driven topological phase transition from a trivial insulator to a topological crystalline insulator. These experimental findings add a new class to the family of topological insulators. Advances in chlorin synthetic chemistry now enable the de novo preparation of diverse chlorin-containing molecular architectures. Five distinct molecular designs have been explored here, including hydrophobic bioconjugatable (oxo)chlorins; a hydrophilic bioconjugatable chlorin; a trans-ethynyl/iodochlorin building block; a set of chlorins bearing electron-rich (methoxy, dimethylamino, methylthio) groups at the 3-position; and a set of ten 3,13-disubstituted chlorins chiefly bearing groups with extended π-moieties. Altogether 23 new chlorins (17 targets, 6 intermediates) have been prepared. The challenge associated with molecular designs that encompass the combination of "hydrophilic, bioconjugatable and wavelength-tunable" chiefly resides in the nature of the hydrophilic unit.
