We consider the surface pressure of a colloid-laden liquid interface. As micron-sized particles of suitable wettability can be irreversibly bound to the liquid interface on experimental timescales, we use the canonical ensemble to derive an expression for the surface pressure of a colloid-laden interface. We use this expression to show that adsorption of particles with only hard-core interactions has a negligible effect on surface pressures from typical Langmuir-trough measurements. Moreover, we show that Langmuir-trough measurements cannot be used to extract typical interparticle potentials. Finally, we argue that the dependence of measured surface pressure on surface fraction can be explained by particle coordination number at low to intermediate particle surface fractions. At high surface fractions, where the particles are jammed and cannot easily rearrange, contact-line sliding and/or deformations of the liquid interface at the length scale of the particles play a pivotal role., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures

Bicontinuous Pickering emulsions (bijels) are a physically interesting class of soft materials with many potential applications including catalysis, microfluidics and tissue engineering. They are created by arresting the spinodal decomposition of a partially-miscible liquid with a (jammed) layer of interfacial colloids. Porosity $L$ (average interfacial separation) of the bijel is controlled by varying the radius ($r$) and volume fraction ($\phi$) of the colloids ($L \propto r/\phi$). However, to optimize the bijel structure with respect to other parameters, e.g. quench rate, characterizing by $L$ alone is insufficient. Hence, we have used confocal microscopy and X-ray CT to characterize a range of bijels in terms of local and area-averaged interfacial curvatures. In addition, the curvatures of bijels have been monitored as a function of time, which has revealed an intriguing evolution up to 60 minutes after bijel formation, contrary to previous understanding., Comment: 9 pages, 9 figures plus Supplementary Information of 6 pages, 1 table, 4 figures

We present a method for incorporating image-charge effects into the description of charge transport through molecular devices. A simple model allows us to calculate the adjustment of the transport levels, due to the polarization of the electrodes as charge is added to and removed from the molecule. For this, we use the charge distributions of the molecule between two metal electrodes in several charge states, rather than in gas phase, as obtained from a density-functional theory-based transport code. This enables us to efficiently model level shifts and gap renormalization caused by image-charge effects, which are essential for understanding molecular transport experiments. We apply the method to benzene di-amine molecules and compare our results with the standard approach based on gas phase charges. Finally, we give a detailed account of the application of our approach to porphyrin-derivative devices recently studied experimentally by Perrin et al. [Nat. Nanotechnol. 8, 282 (2013)], which demonstrates the importance of accounting for image-charge effects when modeling transport through molecular junctions.

It is understood that molecular conjugation plays an important role in charge transport through single-molecule junctions. Here, we investigate electron transport through an anthraquinone based single-molecule three-terminal device. With the use of an electric-field induced by a gate electrode, the molecule is reduced resulting into a ten-fold increase in the off-resonant differential conductance. Theoretical calculations link the change in differential conductance to a reduction-induced change in conjugation, thereby lifting destructive interference of transport pathways., Comment: Nano Letters (2015)

Quantum interference (QI) effects in molecular junctions may be used to obtain large thermoelectric responses. We study the electrical conductance G and the thermoelec- tric response of a series of molecules featuring a quinoid core using density functional theory (DFT), as well as a semi-empirical interacting model Hamiltonian describing the {\pi}-system of the molecule which we treat in the GW approximation. Molecules with a quinoid type structure are shown to have two distinct destructive QI features close to the frontier orbital energies. These manifest themselves as two dips in the transmission, that remain separated, even when either electron donating or withdraw- ing side groups are added. We find that the position of the dips in the transmission and the frontier molecular levels can be chemically controlled by varying the electron donating or withdrawing character of the side groups as well as the conjugation length inside the molecule. This feature results in a very high thermoelectric power factor S^2G and figure of merit ZT, where S is the Seebeck coefficient, making quinoid type molecules potential candidates for efficient thermoelectric devices., Comment: 22 pages, 11 figures

We demonstrate that the formation of bicontinuous emulsions stabilized by interfacial particles (bijels) is more robust when nanoparticles rather than microparticles are used. Emulsification via spinodal demixing in the presence of nearly neutrally wetting particles is induced by rapid heating. Using confocal microscopy, we show that nanospheres allow successful bijel formation at heating rates two orders of magnitude slower than is possible with microspheres. In order to explain our results, we introduce the concept of mechanical leeway i.e. nanoparticles benefit from a smaller driving force towards disruptive curvature. Finally, we suggest that leeway mechanisms may benefit any formulation in which challenges arise due to tight restrictions on a pivotal parameter, but where the restrictions can be relaxed by rationally changing the value of a more accessible parameter., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures

The characteristics of molecular electronic devices are critically determined by metal-organic interfaces, which influence the arrangement of the orbital levels that participate in charge transport. Studies on self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) show (molecule-dependent) level shifts as well as transport-gap renormalization, suggesting that polarization effects in the metal substrate play a key role in the level alignment with respect to the metal's Fermi energy. Here, we provide direct evidence for an electrode-induced gap renormalization in single-molecule junctions. We study charge transport in single porphyrin-type molecules using electrically gateable break junctions. In this set-up, the position of the occupied and unoccupied levels can be followed in situ and with simultaneous mechanical control. When increasing the electrode separation, we observe a substantial increase in the transport gap with level shifts as high as several hundreds of meV for displacements of a few \aa ngstroms. Analysis of this large and tunable gap renormalization with image-charge calculations based on atomic charges obtained from density functional theory confirms and clarifies the dominant role of image-charge effects in single-molecule junctions.

Transport properties of molecular junctions are notoriously expensive to calculate with ab initio methods, primarily due to the semi-infinite electrodes. This has led to the introduction of different approximation schemes for the electrodes. For the most popular metals used in experiments, such as gold, the wide-band limit (WBL) is a particularly efficient choice. In this paper we investigate the performance of different WBL schemes relative to more sophisticated approaches including the fully self-consistent non-equilibrium Green's function (NEGF) method. We find reasonably good agreement between all schemes for systems in which the molecule (and not the metal-molecule interface) dominates the transport properties. Moreover, our implementation of the WBL requires negligible computational effort compared to the ground state DFT calculation of a molecular junction. We also present a new approximate but efficient scheme for calculating transport with a finite bias. Provided the voltage drop occurs primarily inside the molecule, this method provides results in reasonable agreement with fully self-consistent calculations.

We present a novel implementation of the first-principles approach to molecular charge transport using the non-equilibrium Green's function formalism in combination with the ADF/BAND periodic band-structure DFT code, together with results for several example systems. As a proof of concept, we first discuss transport calculations on 1D chains of Li and Al atoms. We then present a detailed study of BDT and archetypal molecular wires from the OPE-family, sandwiched between 3D Au contacts, comparing well with results from the literature. Our implementation further allows us to make a comparison of 3D contacts with and without periodic boundary conditions, the latter being particularly useful for modeling the needle-shaped contacts used in break-junction experiments.

Intermediate Scattering Functions (ISF's) are measured for colloidal hard sphere systems using both Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS) and X-ray Photon Correlation Spectroscopy (XPCS). We compare the techniques, and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each. Both techniques agree in the overlapping range of scattering vectors. We investigate the scaling behaviour found by Segre and Pusey [1] but challenged by Lurio et al. [2]. We observe a scaling behaviour over several decades in time but not in the long time regime. Moreover, we do not observe long time diffusive regimes at scattering vectors away from the peak of the structure factor and so question the existence of a long time diffusion coefficients at these scattering vectors., Comment: 21 pages, 11 figures
