Last year, we reported a perturbative theory of the Casimir-Lifshitz torque between planar biaxially anisotropic materials in the retarded limit [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 120}, 131601 (2018)], which is applied here to study the change of sign and magnitude of the torque with separation distance in biaxial black phosphorus having excess charge carriers. The study is carried out both in vacuum as well as in a background fluid medium. The presence of extra charge carriers and that of an intervening fluid medium are both found to promote enhancement of the magnitude of the torque between identical slabs. The degree of enhancement of the magnitude of torque increases not only with an increased carrier concentration but also with separation distance. In the non-identical case when different planes of anisotropic black phosphorus face each other, owing to the non-monotonic characteristic of the sign-reversal effect of the torque, the enhancement by carrier addition and intervening medium also becomes non-monotonic with distance. In the presence of a background medium, the non-monotonic degree of enhancement of the torque with distance is observed even between identical slabs.

Recently, the premelting and formation of ice due to the Casimir-Lifshitz interaction, proposed in early 1990s by Elbaum and Schick [Phys. Rev. Lett. 66, 1713-1716 (1991)], have been generalized to diverse practical scenarios, yielding novel physical intuitions and possibilities of application for those phenomena. The properties of materials, in particular, the electrical permittivity and permeability, exert significant influences on the Casimir-Cifshitz energies and forces, and hence on the corresponding premelting and formation of ice. To address these influences in detail and explore the resulting physics, here we revisit and extend the analyses of previous work, with both the dielectric data utilized there and the latest dielectric functions for ice and cold water. While our previous results are rederived, an error there has also been spotted. For the four-layer cases considered by some of us, the existence of stable configurations depending on the initial conditions has been confirmed, and different types of stability corresponding to minima of the Casimir-Lifshitz free energy are demonstrated. As the new dielectric functions for ice and cold water deviate considerably from those used by Elbaum and Schick, their vital impacts on three- and four-layer configurations are therefore being reconsidered.

Dispersion forces such as van der Waals forces between two microscopic particles, the Casimir--Polder forces between a particle and a macroscopic object or the Casimir force between two dielectric objects are well studied in vacuum. However, in realistic situations the interacting objects are often embedded in an environmental medium. Such a solvent influences the induced dipole interaction. With the framework of macroscopic quantum electrodynamics, these interactions are mediated via an exchange of virtual photons. Via this method the impact of a homogeneous solvent medium can be expressed as local-field corrections leading to excess polarisabilities which have previously been derived for hard boundary conditions. In order to develop a more realistic description, we investigate on a one-dimensional analog system illustrating the influence of a continuous dielectric profile.

We present a theory for Casimir--Polder forces acting on greenhouse gas molecules dissolved in a thin water film. Such a nanosized film has recently been predicted to arise on th surface of melting ice as stabilized by repulsive Lifshitz forces. We show that different models for the effective polarizability of greenhouse gas molecules in water lead to different predictions for how Casimir--Polder forces influence the extraction of CH$_4$ and CO$_2$ molecules from the melting ice surface. In the most intricate model of a finite-sized molecule inside a cavity, dispersion potentials push the methane molecules towards the ice surface whereas the carbon dioxide typically will be attracted towards the closest interface (ice or air). Previous models for effective polarizability had suggested that CO$_2$ would also be pushed towards the ice surface. Release of greenhouse gas molecules from the surface of melting ice can potentially influence climate greenhouse effects.

The Casimir-Lifshitz torque between two biaxially polarizable anisotropic planar slabs is shown to exhibit a non-trivial sign-reversal in its rotational sense. The critical distance $a_c$ between the slabs that marks this reversal is characterized by the frequency $\omega_c\!\sim \!c/2a_c$ at which the in-planar polarizabilities along the two principal axes are equal. The two materials seek to align their principal axes of polarizabilities in one direction below $a_c$, while above $a_c$ their axes try to align rotated perpendicular relative to their previous minimum energy orientation. The sign-reversal disappears in the nonretarded limit. Our perturbative result, derived for the case when the differences in the relative polarizabilities are small, matches excellently with the exact theory for uniaxial materials. Theories for the effective polarisability of a small particle in a medium are presented using different levels of approximation: we consider the virtual cavity, real cavity and the hard-sphere models as well as a continuous interpolation of the latter two. We present the respective hard-sphere and cavity radii as obtained from density-functional simulations as well as the resulting effective polarisabilities at discrete Matsubara frequencies. This enables us to account for macroscopic media in van der Waals interactions between molecules in water and their Casimir-Polder interaction with an interface.

At air-water interfaces, the Lifshitz interaction by itself does not promote ice growth. On the contrary, we find that the Lifshitz force promotes the growth of an ice film, up to 1-8 nm thickness, near silica-water interfaces at the triple point of water. This is achieved in a system where the combined effect of the retardation and the zero frequency mode influences the short-range interactions at low temperatures, contrary to common understanding. Cancellation between the positive and negative contributions in the Lifshitz spectral function is reversed in silica with high porosity. We study the effect of salts on the thickness of wetting films on melting ice and interactions acting on CO$_2$ bubble near ice-water and vapor-water interfaces. Governing mechanisms are the Lifshitz and the double-layer interactions in the respective three-layer geometries. We demonstrate that the latter depend on the Casimir--Polder interaction of the salt ions dissolved in water with the respective ice, vapour and CO$_2$ interfaces, as calculated using different models for their effective polarizability in water. Significant variation in the predicted thickness of the equilibrium water film is observed for different salt ions and when using different models for the ions' polarizabilities. We find that CO$_2$ bubbles are attracted towards ice-water interface and repelled from the vapor-water interface

Premelting of ice within pores in earth materials is shown to depend on the presence of vapor layers. For thick vapor layers between ice and pore surfaces, a nanosized water sheet can be formed due to repulsive Lifshitz forces. In the absence of vapor layers, ice is inhibited from melting near pore surfaces. In between these limits, we find an enhancement of the water film thickness in silica and alumina pores. In the presence of metallic surface patches in the pore, the Lifshitz forces can dramatically widen the water film thickness, with potential complete melting of the ice surface., Comment: 7 pages, 8 figures

In order to understand why carbon dioxide (CO$_2$) and methane (CH$_4$) molecules interact differently with surfaces, we investigate the Casimir-Polder energy of a linearly polarizable CO$_2$ molecule and an isotropically polarizable CH$_4$ molecule in front of an atomically thin gold film and an amorphous silica slab. We quantitatively analyze how the anisotropy in the polarizability of the molecule influences the van der Waals contribution to the binding energy of the molecule.

Some open questions exist with fluctuation-induced forces between extended dipoles. Conventional intuition derives from large-separation perturbative approximations to dispersion force theory. Here we present a full non-perturbative theory. In addition we discuss how one can take into account finite dipole size corrections. We go beyond the approximate series-expansions used in the dispersion theory of finite size atoms. We demonstrate that a correct, and non-perturbative, theory dramatically alters the dispersion selfenergies of atoms. The non-perturbed theory gives as much as 100% corrections compared to the traditional series expanded theory for the smaller noble gas atoms., Comment: 3 pages, no figures, 1 table

The Casimir-Polder force is an important long range interaction involved in adsorption and desorption of molecules in fluids. We explore Casimir-Polder interactions between methane molecules in water, and between a molecule in water near SiO2 and hexane surfaces. Inclusion of the finite molecular size in the expression for the Casimir-Polder energy leads to estimates of the dispersion contribution to the binding energies between molecules and between one molecule and a planar surface., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

A non-expanded theory is used for dispersion potentials between atoms and ions dissolved in a medium. The first-order dispersion interaction between two atoms in an excited state must account for the fact that the two atoms are coupled via the electromagnetic field and must include effects from background media, retardation and finite size. We show that finite-size corrections when two particles are close change the dispersion interactions in water by several orders of magnitude. We consider as four illustrative examples helium atoms, krypton atoms, phosphate ions, and iodide ions. We demonstrate that, due to large cancellation effects, retardation dominates the interaction for helium atom pairs in an isotropic excited state down to the very small atom-atom separations where finite-size corrections are also important, Comment: 5 pages, 6 figures
