The first determination of doubly-charmed isospin-0 coupled-channel $DD^\ast-D^\ast D^\ast$ scattering amplitudes from lattice QCD is presented. The finite-volume spectrum is computed for three lattice volumes with a light-quark mass corresponding to $m_\pi\approx 391$ MeV and is used to extract the scattering amplitudes in $J^P = 1^+$ via the L\"{u}scher quantization condition. By analytically continuing the scattering amplitudes to complex energies, a $T_{cc}$ pole corresponding to a virtual bound state is found below $DD^\ast$ threshold. We also find a second pole, $T_{cc}^\prime$, corresponding to a resonance pole below the kinematically closed $D^\ast D^\ast$ channel, to which it has a strong coupling. A non-zero coupling is robustly found between the $S$-wave $D D^\ast$ and $D^\ast D^\ast$ channels producing a clear cusp in the $D D^\ast$ amplitude at the $D^\ast D^\ast$ threshold energy. This suggests that the experimental $T_{cc}^\prime$ should be observable in $D D^\ast$ and $D^\ast D^\ast$ final states at ongoing experiments.

Elastic $S-$wave scattering of a charm meson with a light pseudoscalar meson in $J^P =0^+$ is investigated in the flavour $\bar{\mathbf{3}}$, $\mathbf{6}$ and $\overline{\mathbf{15}}$ sectors at the $SU(3)_f$ flavour point using lattice QCD, working on three volumes with $m_{\pi} \approx 700$ MeV. Large bases of interpolating operators are employed to extract finite-volume spectra, which are subsequently used with the L\"uscher method to provide constraints on infinite-volume scattering amplitudes. Examining the singularities of the amplitudes, the $S-$wave amplitude in the flavour $\bar{\mathbf{3}}$ sector is found to contain a deeply bound state, strongly coupled to elastic threshold, corresponding to the $J^P = 0^+$ $D_{s0}^*(2317)$. In the exotic flavour $\mathbf{6}$ sector a virtual bound state is found at $\sqrt{s_{\rm{pole}}} = 2510 - 2610$ MeV, roughly $40-140$ MeV below threshold, whereas the $\overline{\mathbf{15}}$ channel shows weak repulsion., Comment: 41 pages, 15 figures, small changes to match published version

In order to explore the spectrum of hidden-charm scalar and tensor resonances, we study meson-meson scattering with $J^{PC}=0^{++}, 2^{++}$ in the charmonium energy region using lattice QCD. Employing a light-quark mass corresponding to $m_\pi \approx 391$ MeV, we determine coupled-channel scattering amplitudes up to around 4100 MeV considering all kinematically relevant channels consisting of a pair of open-charm mesons or a charmonium meson with a light meson. A single isolated scalar resonance near 4000 MeV is found with large couplings to $D\bar{D}$, $D_s \bar{D}_s$ and the kinematically closed $D^* \bar{D}^*$ channel. A single tensor resonance at a similar mass couples strongly to $D\bar{D}$, $D\bar{D}^*$ and $D^* \bar{D}^*$. We compare the extracted resonances to contemporary experimental candidate states, previous lattice results and theoretical modeling. In contrast to several other studies, we do not find any significant feature in the scalar amplitudes between the ground state $\chi_{c0}(1P)$ and the resonance found around 4000 MeV., Comment: 55 pages, 36 figures

We determine $J^{PC}=0^{++}$ and $2^{++}$ hadron-hadron scattering amplitudes in the charmonium energy region up to 4100 MeV using lattice QCD, a first-principles approach to QCD. Working at $m_\pi\approx 391$ MeV, more than 200 finite-volume energy levels are computed and these are used in extensions of the L\"uscher formalism to determine infinite-volume coupled-channel scattering amplitudes. We find that this energy region contains a single $\chi_{c0}$ and a single $\chi_{c2}$ resonance. Both are found as pole singularities on the closest unphysical Riemann sheet, just below 4000 MeV with widths around 70 MeV. The largest couplings are to kinematically-closed $D^* \bar{D}^*$ channels in $S$-wave, and couplings to several decay channels consisting of pairs of open-charm mesons are found to be large and significant in both cases. Above the ground state $\chi_{c0}$, no other scalar bound-states or near-$D\bar{D}$ threshold resonances are found, in contrast to several theoretical and experimental studies., Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures

The coupling of various charmonium mesons to a photon is studied using lattice QCD, giving access to radiative form factors and transitions, and probing the mesons' structure. Methods are developed which allow the robust determination of amplitudes, including those involving an excited state as well as multiple form factors, for a range of kinematics. These are applied in dynamical lattice QCD calculations using the distillation technique to compute the underlying three-point correlation functions. Form factors and amplitudes involving the low-lying charmonia, $\eta_c$, $J/\psi$, $\chi_{c0}$ and $\eta_c'$, are calculated, demonstrating the methods and providing the first dynamical lattice QCD results for some quantities., Comment: 39 pages, 15 figures, small changes to match published version

The status and prospects for investigations of exotic and conventional hadrons with lattice QCD are discussed. The majority of hadrons decay strongly via one or multiple decay-channels, including most of the experimentally discovered exotic hadrons. Despite this difficult challenge, the properties of several hadronic resonances have been determined within lattice QCD. Isospin-1/2 $D\pi$ scattering amplitudes are computed using lattice QCD, working in a single volume of approximately $(3.6\; \mathrm{fm})^3$ and with a light quark mass corresponding to $m_\pi\approx239$ MeV. The spectrum of the elastic $D\pi$ energy region is computed yielding 20 energy levels. Using the L\"uscher finite-volume quantisation condition, these energies are translated into constraints on the infinite-volume scattering amplitudes and hence enable us to map out the energy dependence of elastic $D\pi$ scattering. By analytically continuing a range of scattering amplitudes, a $D_0^\ast$ resonance pole is consistently found strongly coupled to the $S$-wave $D\pi$ channel, with a mass $m\approx 2200$ MeV and a width $\Gamma\approx400$ MeV. Combined with earlier work investigating the $D_{s0}^\ast$, and $D_0^\ast$ with heavier light quarks, similar couplings between each of these scalar states and their relevant meson-meson scattering channels are determined. The mass of the $D_0^\ast$ is consistently found well below that of the $D_{s0}^\ast$, in contrast to the currently reported experimental result., Comment: 40 pages, 15 figures. We present the first determination of the hadronic decays of the lightest exotic $J^{PC}=1^{-+}$ resonance in lattice QCD. Working with SU(3) flavor symmetry, where the up, down and strange quark masses approximately match the physical strange-quark mass giving $m_\pi \sim 700$ MeV, we compute finite-volume spectra on six lattice volumes which constrain a scattering system featuring eight coupled channels. Analytically continuing the scattering amplitudes into the complex energy plane, we find a pole singularity corresponding to a narrow resonance which shows relatively weak coupling to the open pseudoscalar--pseudoscalar, vector--pseudoscalar and vector--vector decay channels, but large couplings to at least one kinematically-closed axial-vector--pseudoscalar channel. Attempting a simple extrapolation of the couplings to physical light-quark mass suggests a broad $\pi_1$ resonance decaying dominantly through the $b_1 \pi$ mode with much smaller decays into $f_1 \pi$, $\rho \pi$, $\eta' \pi$ and $\eta \pi$. A large total width is potentially in agreement with the experimental $\pi_1(1564)$ candidate state, observed in $\eta \pi$, $\eta' \pi$, which we suggest may be heavily suppressed decay channels., Comment: 33 pages, 20 figures, small changes to match published version

Focusing on three-pion states with maximal isospin ($\pi^+\pi^+\pi^+$), we present the first non-perturbative determination of an energy-dependent three-hadron scattering amplitude from first-principles QCD. The calculation combines finite-volume three-hadron energies, extracted using numerical lattice QCD, with a relativistic finite-volume formalism, required to interpret the results. To fully implement the latter, we also solve integral equations that relate an intermediate three-body K matrix to the physical three-hadron scattering amplitude. Elastic scattering amplitudes for $I=0$ $DK$ and $I=0,1$ $D\bar{K}$ are computed in $S$, $P$ and $D$ partial waves using lattice QCD with light-quark masses corresponding to $m_\pi = 239$ MeV and $m_\pi = 391$ MeV. The $S$-waves contain interesting features including a near-threshold $J^P=0^+$ bound state in $I=0$ $DK$, corresponding to the $D_{s0}^\ast(2317)$, with an effect that is clearly visible above threshold, and suggestions of a $0^+$ virtual bound state in $I=0$ $D\bar{K}$. The $S$-wave $I=1$ $D\bar{K}$ amplitude is found to be weakly repulsive. The computed finite-volume spectra also contain a deeply-bound $D^\ast$ vector resonance, but negligibly small $P$-wave $DK$ interactions are observed in the energy region considered; the $P$ and $D$-wave $D\bar{K}$ amplitudes are also small. The quark model was formulated in 1964 to classify mesons as bound states made of a quark-antiquark pair, and baryons as bound states made of three quarks. For a long time all known mesons and baryons could be classified within this scheme. Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD), however, in principle also allows the existence of more complex structures, generically called exotic hadrons or simply exotics. These include four-quark hadrons (tetraquarks and hadronic molecules), five-quark hadrons (pentaquarks) and states with active gluonic degrees of freedom (hybrids), and even states of pure glue (glueballs). Exotic hadrons have been systematically searched for in numerous experiments for many years. Remarkably, in the past fifteen years, many new hadrons that do not exhibit the expected properties of ordinary (not exotic) hadrons have been discovered in the quarkonium spectrum. These hadrons are collectively known as $XYZ$ states. Some of them, like the charged states, are undoubtedly exotic. Parallel to the experimental progress, the last decades have also witnessed an enormous theoretical effort to reach a theoretical understanding of the $XYZ$ states. Theoretical approaches include not only phenomenological extensions of the quark model to exotics, but also modern non-relativistic effective field theories and lattice QCD calculations. The present work aims at reviewing the rapid progress in the field of exotic $XYZ$ hadrons over the past few years both in experiments and theory. We present the first lattice QCD calculation of coupled $\pi\omega$ and $\pi\phi$ scattering, incorporating coupled $S$ and $D$-wave $\pi\omega$ in $J^P=1^+$. Finite-volume spectra in three volumes are determined via a variational analysis of matrices of two-point correlation functions, computed using large bases of operators resembling single-meson, two-meson and three-meson structures, with the light-quark mass corresponding to a pion mass of $m_\pi \approx 391$ MeV. Utilizing the relationship between the discrete spectrum of finite-volume energies and infinite-volume scattering amplitudes, we find a narrow axial-vector resonance ($J^{PC}=1^{+-}$), the analogue of the $b_1$ meson, with mass $m_{R}\approx1380$ MeV and width $\Gamma_{R}\approx 91$ MeV. The resonance is found to couple dominantly to $S$-wave $\pi\omega$, with a much-suppressed coupling to $D$-wave $\pi\omega$, and a negligible coupling to $\pi\phi$ consistent with the `OZI rule'. No resonant behavior is observed in $\pi\phi$, indicating the absence of a putative low-mass $Z_s$ analogue of the $Z_c$ claimed in $\pi J/\psi$. In order to minimally present the contents of a unitary three-channel scattering matrix, we introduce an $n$-channel generalization of the traditional two-channel Stapp parameterization.

We present a determination of the isospin-1/2 elastic $\pi K$ scattering amplitudes in S and P partial waves using lattice Quantum Chromodynamics. The amplitudes, constrained for a large number of real-valued energy points, are obtained as a function of light-quark mass, corresponding to four pion masses between 200 and 400 MeV. Below the first inelastic threshold, the P-wave scattering amplitude is dominated by a single pole singularity that evolves from being a stable bound-state at the highest quark mass into a narrow resonance that broadens as the pion and kaon masses are reduced. As in experiment, the S-wave amplitude does not exhibit an obviously resonant behavior, but instead shows a slow rise from threshold, which is not inconsistent with the presence of a $\kappa$/$K_0^\star(700)$-like resonance at the considered quark masses. As has been found in analyses of experimental scattering data, simple analytic continuations into the complex energy plane of precisely-determined lattice QCD amplitudes on the real energy axis are not sufficient to model-independently determine the existence and properties of this state. The spectra and amplitudes we present will serve as an input for increasingly elaborate amplitude analysis techniques that implement more of the analytic structure expected at complex energies., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures

We present the first determination of $\rho \pi$ scattering, incorporating dynamically-coupled partial-waves, using lattice QCD, a first-principles numerical approach to QCD. Considering the case of isospin-2 $\rho \pi$, we calculate partial-wave amplitudes with $J \le 3$ and determine the degree of dynamical mixing between the coupled $S$ and $D$-wave channels with $J^P=1^+$. The analysis makes use of the relationship between scattering amplitudes and the discrete spectrum of states in the finite volume lattice. Constraints on the scattering amplitudes are provided by over one hundred energy levels computed on two lattice volumes at various overall momenta and in several irreducible representations of the relevant symmetry groups. The spectra follow from variational analyses of matrices of correlations functions computed with large bases of meson-meson operators. Calculations are performed with degenerate light and strange quarks tuned to the physical strange quark mass so that $m_\pi \sim 700$ MeV, ensuring that the $\rho$ is stable against strong decay. This work demonstrates the successful application of techniques, opening the door to calculations of scattering processes that incorporate the effects of dynamically-coupled partial-waves, including those involving resonances or bound states., Comment: Minor changes to match the published version

We present a general class of operators resembling compact tetraquarks which have a range of colour-flavour-spin structures, transform irreducibly under the symmetries of the lattice and respect other relevant symmetries. These constructions are demonstrated in lattice QCD calculations with light quarks corresponding to $m_\pi =$ 391 MeV. Using the distillation framework, correlation functions involving large bases of meson-meson and tetraquark operators are computed in the isospin-1 hidden-charm and doubly-charmed sectors, and finite-volume spectra are extracted with the variational method. We find the spectra are insensitive to the addition of tetraquark operators to the bases of meson-meson operators. For the first time, through using diverse bases of meson-meson operators, the multiple energy levels associated with meson-meson levels which would be degenerate in the non-interacting limit are extracted reliably. The number of energy levels in each spectrum is found to be equal to the number of expected non-interacting meson-meson levels in the energy region considered and the majority of energies lie close to the non-interacting levels. We present preliminary calculations towards radiative transitions in charmonium using anisotropic $N_f = 2 + 1$ dynamical ensembles generated by the Hadron Spectrum Collaboration. With the use of newer technologies we aim to investigate transitions between states, including potential exotic charmonium states, lying higher in the spectrum than in previous studies. A crucial ingredient in this work is the use of variationally optimised interpolating operators which allow for a reliable determination of the three-point correlation functions needed. In this investigation, we examine how the precision of energy spectra and scattering phase shifts, extracted in lattice QCD, depend upon the degree of distillation type smearing. We use the variational method to extract energy spectra for the isospin-1, $J^{PC}=1^{--}$ channel and use the L\"{u}scher method to compute scattering amplitudes, relevant for the $\rho$ resonance, in $\pi\pi$ elastic scattering. Optimised interpolating operators for a single ground state pion are constructed and these are used to construct two pion operators. Calculations are performed on an anisotropic lattice with a pion mass of $m_\pi=236$ MeV. We present highly-excited charmonium, $D_s$ and $D$ meson spectra from dynamical lattice QCD calculations with light quarks corresponding to $M_{\pi} \sim 240$ MeV and compare these to previous results with $M_{\pi} \sim 400$ MeV. Utilising the distillation framework, large bases of carefully constructed interpolating operators and a variational procedure, we extract and reliably identify the continuum spin of an extensive set of excited mesons. We present the first lattice QCD study of coupled-channel $D\pi$, $D\eta$ and $D_{s}\bar{K}$ scattering in isospin-1/2 in three partial waves. Using distillation, we compute matrices of correlation functions with bases of operators capable of resolving both meson and meson-meson contributions to the spectrum. These correlation matrices are analysed using a variational approach to extract the finite-volume energy eigenstates. Utilising L\"uscher's method and its extensions, we constrain scattering amplitudes in $S$, $P$ and $D$-wave as a function of energy. By analytically continuing the scattering amplitudes to complex energies, we investigate the $S$-matrix singularities. Working at $m_\pi \approx 391$ MeV, we find a pole corresponding to a $J^{P} = 0^{+}$ near-threshold bound state with a large coupling to $D\pi$. We also find a deeply bound $J^{P} = 1^{-}$ state, and evidence for a $J^{P} = 2^{+}$ narrow resonance coupled predominantly to $D\pi$. Elastic $D\pi$ scattering in the isospin-$3/2$ channel is studied and we find a weakly repulsive interaction in $S$-wave.

We present a determination of the $P$-wave $\pi\pi\to\pi\gamma^\star$ transition amplitude from lattice quantum chromodynamics. Matrix elements of the vector current in a finite-volume are extracted from three-point correlation functions, and from these we determine the infinite-volume amplitude using a generalization of the Lellouch-L\"uscher formalism. We determine the amplitude for a range of discrete values of the $\pi\pi$ energy and virtuality of the photon, and observe the expected dynamical enhancement due to the $\rho$ resonance. Describing the energy dependence of the amplitude, we are able to analytically continue into the complex energy plane and from the residue at the $\rho$ pole extract the $\rho\to \pi \gamma^\star$ transition form factor. This calculation, at $m_\pi\approx 400$ MeV, is the first to determine the form factor of an unstable hadron within a first principles approach to QCD., Comment: 20 pages, 16 figures, 3 tables

We present the first ab initio calculation of a radiative transition of a hadronic resonance within quantum chromodynamics (QCD). We compute the amplitude for $\pi\pi \to \pi\gamma^\star$, as a function of the energy of the $\pi\pi$ pair and the virtuality of the photon, in the kinematic regime where $\pi\pi$ couples strongly to the unstable $\rho$ resonance. This exploratory calculation is performed using a lattice discretization of QCD with quark masses corresponding to $m_\pi \approx 400$~MeV. We obtain a description of the energy dependence of the transition amplitude, constrained at 48 kinematic points, that we can analytically continue to the $\rho$ pole and identify from its residue the $\rho \to \pi\gamma^\star$ form factor., Comment: V2, version accepted for publication in PRL. We determine elastic and coupled-channel amplitudes for isospin-1 meson-meson scattering in $P$-wave, by calculating correlation functions using lattice QCD with light quark masses such that $m_\pi = 236$ MeV in a cubic volume of $\sim (4 \,\mathrm{fm})^3$. Variational analyses of large matrices of correlation functions computed using operator constructions resembling $\pi\pi$, $K\overline{K}$ and $q\bar{q}$, in several moving frames and several lattice irreducible representations, leads to discrete energy spectra from which scattering amplitudes are extracted. In the elastic $\pi\pi$ scattering region we obtain a detailed energy-dependence for the phase-shift, corresponding to a $\rho$ resonance, and we extend the analysis into the coupled-channel $K\overline{K}$ region for the first time, finding a small coupling between the channels., Comment: matches published version, minor typos corrected

Coupled-channel $\pi K$ and $\eta K$ scattering amplitudes are determined by studying the finite-volume energy spectra obtained from dynamical lattice QCD calculations. Using a large basis of interpolating operators, including both those resembling a $q\bar{q}$ construction and those resembling a pair of mesons with relative momentum, a reliable excited-state spectrum can be obtained. Working at ${m_\pi=391\,\mathrm{MeV}}$, we find a gradual increase in the $J^P=0^+$ $\pi K$ phase-shift which may be identified with a broad scalar resonance that couples strongly to $\pi K$ and weakly to $\eta K$. The low-energy behavior of this amplitude suggests a virtual bound-state that may be related to the $\kappa$ resonance. A bound state with $J^P=1^-$ is found very close to the $\pi K$ threshold energy, whose coupling to the $\pi K$ channel is compatible with that of the experimental $K^\star(892)$. Evidence is found for a narrow resonance in $J^P=2^+$. Isospin--3/2 $\pi K$ scattering is also studied and non-resonant phase-shifts spanning the whole elastic scattering region are obtained., Comment: 32 pages, 27 figures - replaced to better match version appearing in PRD. Using first-principles calculation within Quantum Chromodynamics, we are able to determine a pattern of strangeness=1 resonances which appear as complex singularities within coupled $\pi K$, $\eta K$ scattering amplitudes. We make use of numerical computation in the lattice discretized approach to the quantum field theory with light quark masses corresponding to $m_\pi \sim 400\, \textrm{MeV}$ and at a single lattice spacing. The energy dependence of scattering amplitudes is extracted through their relationship to the discrete spectrum in a finite-volume, which we map out in unprecedented detail., Comment: V3: version accepted for publication in PRL. We present highly excited spectra of charmonium, charm-light and charm-strange mesons using the dynamical anisotropic lattices of the Hadron Spectrum Collaboration. The use of novel techniques has allowed us to extract these spectra with a high degree of statistical precision, while also enabling us to observe states as high as spin-4, states with exotic quantum numbers and candidate gluonic excitations. We discuss the phenomenology of these spectra, and also present preliminary results of D{\pi} scattering considering only the lowest partial wave in the isospin-3/2 channel., Comment: Lattice 2013 proceedings, 7 pages

We report on the extraction of an excited spectrum of isoscalar mesons using lattice QCD. Calculations on several lattice volumes are performed with a range of light quark masses corresponding to pion masses down to about 400 MeV. The distillation method enables us to evaluate the required disconnected contributions with high statistical precision for a large number of meson interpolating fields. We find relatively little mixing between light and strange in most JPC channels; one notable exception is the pseudoscalar sector where the approximate SU(3)F octet, singlet structure of the {\eta}, {\eta}' is reproduced. We extract exotic JPC states, identified as hybrid mesons in which an excited gluonic field is coupled to a color-octet qqbar pair, along with non-exotic hybrid mesons embedded in a qqbar-like spectrum.

We present spectra of highly excited D and Ds mesons up to around 3.8 GeV determined using dynamical lattice QCD. We employ novel computational techniques and the variational method with a large basis of carefully constructed operators in order to extract and reliably identify the continuum spin of an extensive set of excited states. These include states with high spin and states identified as having an explicit gluonic contribution. Calculations were performed on two volumes, both with a pion mass of approximately 400 MeV, achieving a high statistical precision for both ground and excited states. We discuss our results in light of experimental observations, comment on the phenomenological implications and identify the lightest `supermultiplet' of hybrid mesons in each sector., Comment: 26 pages, 10 figures

We present highly excited spectra of charm-light and charm-strange mesons from dynamical lattice QCD. Our calculations are performed on anisotropic $N_{f} = 2+1$ dynamical ensembles generated by the Hadron Spectrum Collaboration. The use of novel techniques and a large basis of interpolating operators have allowed us to extract these spectra to a high degree of statistical precision, extract states of high spin and observe candidate hybrid mesons. We determine the energy-dependent amplitude for elastic {\pi}{\pi} P-wave scattering in isospin-1 by computing part of the discrete energy spectrum of QCD in finite cubic boxes. We observe a rapidly rising phase shift that can be well described by a single {\rho} resonance. The spectrum is obtained from hadron correlators computed using lattice QCD with light quark masses corresponding to m{\pi} ~ 400 MeV. Variational analyses are performed with large bases of hadron interpolating fields including, as well as fermion bilinears that resemble q-qbar constructions, also operators that resemble pairs of pions with definite relative and total momentum. We compute the spectrum for a range of center-of-mass momenta and in various irreducible representations of the relevant symmetry group. Hence we determine more than thirty values of the isospin-1 P-wave scattering phase shift in the elastic region, mapping out its energy dependence in unprecedented detail., Comment: V2: Corrected a bug in code that previously lead to incorrect normalization of certain correlation functions. We present a spectrum of highly excited charmonium mesons up to around 4.5 GeV calculated using dynamical lattice QCD. Employing novel computational techniques and the variational method with a large basis of carefully constructed operators, we extract and reliably identify the continuum spin of an extensive set of excited states, states with exotic quantum numbers (0+-, 1-+, 2+-) and states with high spin. Calculations are performed on two lattice volumes with pion mass approximately 400 MeV and the mass determinations have high statistical precision even for excited states. We discuss the results in light of experimental observations, identify the lightest 'supermultiplet' of hybrid mesons and comment on the phenomenological implications of the spectrum of exotic mesons., Comment: 33 pages, 17 figures; v2: minor changes to reflect published version

The isospin-2 pi pi system provides a useful testing ground for determining elastic hadron scattering parameters from finite-volume spectra obtained using lattice QCD computations. A reliable determination of the excited state spectrum of two pions in a cubic box follows from variational analysis of correlator matrices constructed using a large basis of operators. A general operator construction is presented which respects the symmetries of a multi-hadron system in flight. This is applied to the case of pi pi and allows for the determination of the scattering phase-shifts at a large number of kinematic points, in both S-wave and D-wave, within the elastic region. The technique is demonstrated with a calculation at a pion mass of 396 MeV, where the elastic scattering is found to be well described by a scattering length parameterisation., Comment: Tables of little-group CGCs in ancillary file; v2: minor changes to reflect published version

Motivated by the desire to construct meson-meson operators of definite relative momentum in order to study resonances in lattice QCD, we present a set of single-meson interpolating fields at non-zero momentum that respect the reduced symmetry of a cubic lattice in a finite cubic volume. These operators follow from the subduction of operators of definite helicity into irreducible representations of the appropriate little groups. We show their effectiveness in explicit computations where we find that the spectrum of states interpolated by these operators is close to diagonal in helicity, admitting a description in terms of single-meson states of identified J^{PC}. The variationally determined optimal superpositions of the operators for each state give rapid relaxation in Euclidean time to that state, ideal for the construction of meson-meson operators and for the evaluation of matrix elements at finite momentum., Comment: 25 pages, 14 figures; v2: minor changes to reflect journal version

We extract to high statistical precision an excited spectrum of single-particle isoscalar mesons using lattice QCD, including states of high spin and, for the first time, light exotic JPC isoscalars. The use of a novel quark field construction has enabled us to overcome the long-standing challenge of efficiently including quark-annihilation contributions. Hidden-flavor mixing angles are extracted and while most states are found to be close to ideally flavor mixed, there are examples of large mixing in the pseudoscalar and axial sectors in line with experiment. Finite-volume lattice QCD calculations offer the possibility of extracting resonance parameters from the energy-dependent elastic phase-shift computed using the Luescher technique. In this letter, as a trial of the method, we report on the extraction of the non-resonant phase-shift for S and D-wave pi-pi isospin-2 scattering from dynamical lattice QCD computations. We define a variational basis of operators resembling pairs of pions of definite relative momentum and extract a spectrum of excited states that maps to phase-shifts at a set of discrete scattering momenta. Computations are performed with pion masses between 400 and 520 MeV on multiple spatial volumes. We observe no significant quark mass dependence in the phase-shifts extracted which are in reasonable agreement with the available experimental data at low momentum., Comment: 5 pages, updated to reflect published version

We present a detailed description of the extraction of the highly excited isovector meson spectrum on dynamical anisotropic lattices using a new quark-field construction algorithm and a large variational basis of operators. With careful operator construction, the combination of these techniques is used to identify the continuum spin of extracted states reliably, overcoming the reduced rotational symmetry of the cubic lattice. Excited states, states with exotic quantum numbers (0+-, 1-+ and 2+-) and states of high spin are resolved, including, for the first time in a lattice QCD calculation, spin-four states. The determinations of the spectrum of isovector mesons and kaons are performed on dynamical lattices with two volumes and with pion masses down to ~ 400 MeV, with statistical precision typically at or below 1% even for highly excited states., Comment: 26 pages, 26 figures

Pion exchange in S-wave between hadrons that are themselves in a relative S-wave is shown to shift energies by hundreds of MeV, leading to deeply bound quasi-molecular states. In the case of charmed mesons $D^*,D_1$ a spectroscopy arises consistent with enigmatic charmonium states observed above 4 GeV in $e^+e^-$ annihilation. A possible explanation of $Y(4260)\to \psi\pi\pi$ and $Y(4360) \to \psi'\pi\pi$ is found. We give results for all isospin and charge-conjugation combinations, and comment on flavor exotic doubly charmed states and bottomonium analogs. A search in $D\bar{D}3\pi$ is recommended to test this hypothesis. An exotic $1^{-+}$ is predicted to occur in the vicinity of the $Y$(4260)., Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures and 5 tables
