1. Attitudes of Vocational Educators Toward Change

Abstract

(Purpose) The purpose of this study was to determine whether there was a difference between the perceptions of district vocational directors and high school building administrators concerning the willingness of vocational educators to make changes in their programs. (Methodology) A mailed survey was sent to 67 district directors of vocational education and the 431 high school principals in the 67 Florida school districts. The survey instrument was designed in two parts. The first section required ratings of vocational educators' stages of planning, development, and implementation of innovative instructional strategies and innovative program initiatives. The items reflected the seven innovations that members of the Florida Department of Education agreed were those that were being promoted for adoption in Florida high schools. The items for the second part of the instrument were based on the dimensions of the Attitude toward Change conceptual framework. A return rate of 68.8 percent was obtained. Data analysis was accomplished using a t-test to determine whether there was a significant difference between the mean ratings given to the vocational educators by the vocational directors and the principals of the high schools where the programs were housed. (Results) The means for each item on the instrument as well as the means for each scale score was explored to determine the level of the adoption of the innovation or the extent to which the respondent groups reported that vocational educators had positive or negative attitudes toward change. (Conclusions) The data indicate that both administrative groups believe that the vocational educators have a positive attitude toward change and have made substantial progress in implementing changes that have been promoted by the Florida Department of Education. Both of these administrative groups see vocational educators as having a positive attitude toward planning, implementing, and maintaining programs after changes have been made with the Principal group being more positive than the Vocational Director group. This raises the question of whether vocational educators are more critical of other vocational educators than are non-vocational administrators. It follows then that the image that the general public has of vocational educators as being out of date and not wanting to change could be a result of this internal criticism. (Recommendations) It is suggested that a study be done to answer the question as to whether vocational programs are up to date and whether appropriate research is being conducted to determine what changes need to be made in the programs. 5. Mental Health and Functional Outcomes of Maternal and Adolescent Reports of Adolescent Depressive Symptoms

Abstract

Objective: To assess the value of maternal and self-ratings of adolescent depression by investigating the extent to which these reports predicted a range of mental health and functional outcomes 4 years later. The potential influence of mother's own depressed mood on her ratings of adolescent depression and suicidal ideation on adolescent outcome was also tested. Method: A longitudinal population-based study of 842 adolescents ages 11 to 16 at the baseline assessment and 15 to 20 at follow-up (62% retention). Results: Both mother- and adolescent-rated depressive symptoms predicted future depression, antisocial behavior, impairment, health service use, and regular tobacco use in the adolescent. The odds ratios obtained for maternal and adolescent ratings of depressive symptoms as predictors of future psychopathology were not significantly different. Mothers' own depressive symptoms were not significantly associated with adolescent depression, health service use, or substance use at follow-up. Depression that was accompanied by adolescent-rated suicidal thoughts was significantly more strongly associated with impairment at follow-up than depression alone. Conclusions: It is possible to obtain clinically useful information on adolescent depression from the child's mother. However, information on suicidal ideation was rarely endorsed by mothers, suggesting that maternal report of adolescent suicidal thoughts shows less sensitivity than adolescent report. 6. Constructing Vocational and Technical College Student Persistence Models.

Abstract

Data from 1,243 vocational-technical college freshmen in Taiwan were used to construct a primary persistence model of 8 significant predictors (first-semester grade point average, gender, entrance examination, major, social integration, gym grade, occupational guidance, parent education, academic remediation); a secondary model added second-semester grade point average. 8. Baseline Data for Teacher Education. Final Report.

Abstract

The major purposes of this study were to (1) develop baseline data relative to the supply of and demand for vocational and technical education personnel by program area, level, and area of the State; (2) identify the availability of inservice and preservice programs for vocational and technical education personnel, and (3) analyze any discrepancies which may exist between the need for and the availability of programs including any unwarranted duplication of training efforts. Data was collected (through surveys) from public secondary schools; district directors of vocational education; community colleges regarding personnel recruitment policy, hiring policy, sources of personnel; preservice and inservice teacher education programs; and the utilization of teacher education institutions. Results showed that with one important exception, supply and demand for vocational and technical education personnel in Florida are fairly well balanced, and that current productivity of teacher education institutions in Florida is not creating an oversupply of vocational and technical teachers. The health and public service program area proved to be the one serious exception to the general finding of equilibrium between supply and demand forces. The study also indicated that (a) inservice programs are not distributed in proportion to vocational teaching personnel, (b) most inservice activities are of a professional rather than technical nature, (c) most inservice activities were offered for more than one vocational program area, and (d) funding for inservice activities was not equally distributed throughout the State. 9. A Developmental Study of the Mediating Effects of Locus of Control on Career Maturity.

Abstract

This study was designed to study the effect of locus of control on the career maturity of a cross-section of age groups. The effects of race and sex were also studied. The Career Development Responsibility Scale (Thomas, l974), the Career Maturity Inventory Attitude Scale (Crites, 1973), and a measure of socioeconomic status were employed to collect the data. The latter variable was used as a covariable. The analysis of covariance produced significant main effects for race and locus of control. The mean maturity score was significantly greater for whites. Externals were significantly less mature in their career attitudes. (Author)

10. The Effects of Sex, Occupational Choice and Career Development Responsibility on the Career Maturity of Ninth-Grade Students.

Abstract

This study investigated the effects of sex, status of occupational choice, and career development responsibility on the career maturity of ninth-grade students from an urban, industrial, integrated community. The instruments used were the Career Maturity Inventory (Crites), and the Career Development Responsibility (CDR) scale (Thomas). Results showed that the main effects of occupational choice and levels of the CDR scale were significant. Students who were able to state an occupational choice had more mature career attitudes than those who were undecided. Although the main effect of sex was nonsignificant, the interaction between sex and CDR levels approached significance suggesting that sex and level of career development responsibility may have differential effects on the development of mature career attitudes. 11. A Measure of Career Development Responsibility.

Abstract

The Career Development Responsibility scale was designed to measure the extent to which students feel that reinforcement in terms of success in preparation-acquisition performance situations in a career are considered to be contingent on the student's own behavior. The 30-item instrument was written so that two items represent each cell of a 3x5 matrix, the dimensions of which are career choice attitude and career choice competency of the Crites (1973) vocational maturity model. The response mode was a choice between an internal and external response. Content-and criterion-related validity were established. A measure of internal consistency was employed to establish reliability. (Author)

12. Underlying Constructs of Locus of Control of Reinforcement.

Abstract

This study investigates the underlying constructs of two instruments which purport to measure the locus of control of reinforcement variable. Instruments used were the IAR and the Career Development Responsibility Scale (CDR). Principal components analyses were computed separately for each instrument from the intercorrelation matrix of the items of the respective instruments. Data were obtained from a cross-sectional student group of ninth graders. The study provides evidence that instruments designed to measure locus of control in domains other than academic achievement serve to increase the number of dimensions. Intercorrelations of the factor score derived from the IAR and CDR are sufficiently low as to question whether or not they are, in fact, measuring the same construct. Developers of locus of control instruments should be aware that the balance of situations and sources of control items will affect the scores obtained from the instrument, and thus the relationship with other similar instruments. 15. Barriers to Entry into Non-Traditional Occupations for Women: A Study to Determine the Ability to Discriminate among Groups.

Abstract

The purpose of the study reported in this speech was to ascertain whether perceived barriers to entering nontraditional occupations as measured by a barriers-to-entry survey could be employed to accurately discriminate among women's consideration of a nontraditional occupation. Using a stratified random sample of 500 women (51% response) living in a moderately large Southeastern city who were employed in traditional occupations of nursing, teaching, and secretarial work, the two-part survey sought to discriminate among women who had given little, serious, or no consideration to entering a nontraditional occupation. Results of the survey indicate that membership in these deterrent groups can be identified on the basis of perceived barriers. Specifically, the findings lend support to two assumptions: (1) the greater the consideration a woman gives to nontraditional occupations, the more she will be deterred and the more helpless she learns to feel; (2) women discover that the role of female is considered more important than a career role, even when entering a nontraditional field. 16. Impact of an Educational Program Designed to Assist Women Overcome the Deterrents to Entering Non-Traditional Occupations.

Abstract

A study determined whether a short-term educational program could be used to help women overcome personal-social barriers to entry into non-traditional occupational preparation programs. Twenty women from each of three community/junior colleges were surveyed using the Survey of Women's Attitudes about Careers (which was also used for posttesting) to determine what the barriers were. A treatment program, based on survey findings, was designed and delivered. The treatment program, which addressed decision making, goal setting, self-knowledge, and awareness of career opportunities, was intended to assist women in overcoming barriers for entry into nontraditional employment and to encourage them to become self-directed in their career development. Posttests and follow-up interviews were used to assess the program's impact by considering (1) changes made by participants as a result of specific goals, (2) application to and problems encountered in apprenticeship and training programs, and (3) degree of support from family and friends. It was concluded that the program did have some impact in assisting women to enter nontraditional occupations by helping them set career goals and change stereotypical attitudes. Participants also reported feeling less deterrence from potential barriers and having more control over their career development. (YLB)

17. Overcoming Personal-Social Barriers to Entry into Non-Traditional Occupational Preparation Programs. A Final Report.

Abstract

This report describes a research project which (1) assessed personal-social barriers to female entry into non-traditional jobs, (2) developed a treatment program to assist women in overcoming those barriers, and (3) determined program impact. A project overview, the first of four major sections, precedes a survey on barriers (section 2). Following a literature reivew concentrating on the areas of stereotyping of occupations and barriers to women's entry, the methodology and results of the study are presented: population identification and selection (teachers, secretaries, and nurses who had considered but not pursued a male-dominated occupation), instrumentation, data tables, survey instrument efficiency, and deterent identification. Survey materials are appended. Section 3 presents an educational program with the topics: pursuing a non-traditional occupation, interference, career decision making, self-assessment, career requirements, planning for acquisition of job skills, job entry, and coping on the job. Designed for self-directed study or workshops, the course consists of eight units with objectives, text, exercises, and references. (All printed instructional materials are included.) The final section includes a literature review on the outcomes of related programs and analysis of assessment data on the program. 18. A Study to Determine the Impact of Basic Skills and Functional Literacy Requirements on Meeting the Vocational Needs of Secondary Students. Final Report, July 1, 1979-June 30, 1981.

Abstract

A study was conducted to assess the impact of the Florida State Student Assessment Test (FSSAT) (Functional Literacy Test) on the enrollment in secondary-level vocational education courses. The 67 school districts in Florida were grouped according to population density into three levels of urbanization (low, medium, and high). Ten percent of the public high schools in each level of urbanization were randomly selected to participate in the study. Intact twelfth grade classes were randomly selected, and students in these classes were divided into vocational and nonvocational education groups. These students and county vocational education directors, vocational education teachers, and principals were surveyed. Contrary to the beliefs of vocational educators, vocational education enrollments increased. Disproportionate enrollment trends did exist; that is, while secondary-level vocational enrollments increased in Florida, total secondary-level enrollment declined. Very few students were deterred from enrolling in vocational courses because of the requirement to be remediated in order to pass the FSSAT. However, a substantial proportion of vocational students who failed the FSSAT did not re-enroll in vocational education courses. The overall effectiveness of the remedial practices was found to be low. It was recommended that (1) systematic, standardized remedial efforts be made; (2) procedures for measuring effectiveness of remedial practices be established; and (3) the reasons that students who failed the FSSAT did not re-enroll in vocational courses be studied. 19. A Study to Identify the Unique Criteria and Standards Needed for the Development of Successful Bilingual Vocational Programs. Part 2: Cultural Barriers. Final Report, from March 1, 1980 to June 30, 1981.

Abstract

A Florida study identified cultural barriers that may impede students of different cultures from learning in vocational classrooms. One questionnaire was mailed to 15 subjects outside Florida and used as an interview format for 35 personnel of Florida bilingual vocational programs. These participants who were monolingual or bilingual with students from cultures other than their own identified cultural barriers. A second questionnaire was administered to 21 bilingual instructors of students of similar background who indicated their belief as to validity of the identified barriers. Barriers identified as valid included: unrealistic expectations of what school provides; greater differences between individuals than between groups; conflicts due to different beliefs relating to differences in color, ethnic background, social status, religion; instructor belief that all students should adapt to "Anglo" culture; teacher expectations not understood by students; no translators for teachers who do not know target language; students discouraged by lack of understanding who become disruptive; students who see themselves as dumb when they do not remember what they learned the previous day; student responses based on culture that cause teacher to think student is stupid; and students' trying to adapt new and conflicting values, losing respect for family values, or resenting new values. 20. A Study to Identify the Unique Criteria and Standards Needed for the Development of Successful Bilingual Vocational Programs. Part 1: Evaluation Component. Final Report, from March 1, 1980 to June 30, 1981.

Abstract

A study was conducted to develop a process evaluation model for Bilingual Vocational Programs (BVPs) in Florida. Literature was reviewed that concerned state evaluation of general, vocational, and bilingual vocational education. This information and information from interviews and correspondence on these areas were used to develop a questionnaire that identified the additional needs of BVPs as compared with traditional vocational education programs. The questionnaire was also designed to identify standards and criteria, which, when met, would indicate that effective bilingual/vocational education (BVE) and/or vocational education for the limited English proficiency students was being provided. New York City BVP instructors and administrators participated in the pilot test of the Bilingual Vocational Instructional Program Review Component (BVIPRC) which contained those standards and criteria identified. Based on the Vocational Education Instructional Program Review, the BVIPRC includes a self evaluation component and on-site review. (A copy of the BVIPRC is provided.) The revised BVIPRC was field tested with BVE personnel in Florida. A total of 69 BVE staff participated in the study--35 completed the questionnaire and pilot tested the BVIPRC, 34 participated in BVIPRC field testing and evaluation. 21. Identification of Strategies to Increase Retention of Disadvantaged Students in Nontraditional Programs in Florida. Manual.

Abstract

This manual is designed to assist school personnel in their efforts to increase the number of women and nontraditional students who are recruited into and retained in nontraditional occupational preparation programs. Discussed first are the nature and scope of the problem of retaining disadvantaged students in nontraditional vocational programs, the barriers faced by nontraditional students, and general procedures for planning nontraditional vocational program recruitment and retention strategies. The remaining four chapters of the guide are devoted to recruitment, counseling, training and pretraining, and placement strategies that are targeted at increasing retention of disadvantaged students in nontraditional vocational programs in Florida. Each of these chapters consists of a series of strategy sheets that contain a strategy objective, a discussion of the strategy, procedures for its implementation, personnel and budget requirements for effective use, and instructions for evaluating the strategy. 22. Identification of Strategies to Increase Retention of Disadvantaged Students in Nontraditional Programs in Florida. Final Report from July 1, 1982 to June 30, 1983.

Abstract

A study identified strategies for increasing the retention of disadvantaged students in nontraditional programs in Florida. The first phase of the study consisted of a review of literature concerning working women, the earnings gap between men and women, barriers to enrollment in nontraditional programs, and recruitment and retention strategies. During the next phase of the study, researchers interviewed teachers, counselors, and administrators at three vocational-technical centers, four community colleges, and five high schools, all in Florida, that were identified as having a high percentage of nontraditional students. In addition, they administered surveys to 465 students enrolled in program areas at these 12 institutions. Based on their analysis of the information obtained from these interviews and from the survey, the researchers identified a series of recruitment, counseling, training, pretraining, placement, and follow-up strategies that appeared successful in the 12 schools examined. As a further validation measure, a cross-tabulation was made between the items included in the student survey form and the context of the strategies. After thus establishing the validity of the strategies, the researchers incorporated the strategies into a manual on strategies for increasing the retention of disadvantaged students in nontraditional vocational programs in Florida. 23. Development of a Facility Determination Model for Competency-Based Vocational Education Programs in the State of Florida. Final Report. From July 1, 1980 to June 30, 1983.

Abstract

A project was undertaken to design and field test a facility development model for competency-based vocational education programs in Florida. During the first phase of the project, the researchers conducted an in-depth case study of programs and facilities in which successful competency-based technical education programs had been conducted. Next, an analysis was made of the discrepancies between the findings of the case study and the current standards for programs and facilities. After identifying program and facility standards for selected vocational and technical education programs, the researchers developed a model for establishing standards for competency-based programs. The model provided for identification of what is to be taught, how it will be taught, what is needed to teach the programs, and how much space is needed. The final step in the model entails an evaluation of the space required for the program. Based on the field tests of the model in architectural drafting, automotive mechanics, and licensed practical nursing programs, the researchers recommended using a computer to assist in implementing the assessment model and revising the model to include more detailed provisions for assessing the need for instructional materials. 24. Linkage between Vocationally Trained Participants and Industry Registered Apprenticeship Programs: A Study of Barriers and Facilitators. Final Report.

Abstract

The study described in this report was conducted to identify the barriers and facilitators to establishing a system of linkages between vocational education and apprenticeship programs. Following an extensive review of literature that showed various barriers to linkages and described some facilitating steps, data were collected through an initial open-ended interview and later through a structured questionnaire that was developed from the responses given to interview items. Forty-six people in vocational education and apprenticeship administration were interviewed, and the resultant survey was mailed to a sample of 288 persons--vocational education personnel and administrators, apprenticeship administrators, and apprenticeship instructors. A total of 106 surveys (38 percent) were returned. The results of the questionnaire contributed information regarding priorities for effecting successful linkage arrangements and suggested efficient, effective, and attainable mechanisms for addressing potential sources of conflict. Some of the barriers cited by respondents were (1) existing organizational practices and procedures, (2) lack of domain consensus, (3) personnel attitudes and perceptions, and (4) lack of communication and awareness. Steps to address these barriers were suggested by respondents. Their ideas are summarized in a manual on implementation of linkages between vocational education and apprenticeships that was produced by this project. (KC)

25. Linkage between Vocationally Trained Participants and Industry Registered Apprenticeship Programs: An Implementation Manual.

Abstract

This manual was developed to provide assistance to persons in registered apprenticeships and vocational education who wish to form a link between these two institutions. It offers a procedure that can be adapted to meet local conditions. The major sections of the manual define linkage, describe when linkage is likely to occur, list the possible benefits, enumerate the conditions that facilitate linkage, describe how to develop a linkage plan, provide suggestions on how to implement linkage plans, and describe an evaluation process. (This structure was selected for the manual so that those considering entering into a linkage agreement could establish what they deem are necessary ingredients for a linkage plan, as well as weigh the possible costs and benefits of entering into such an agreement, before making initial contacts with the agency with which linkage is proposed.) In addition, the manual provides assistance in making important first contacts so that the conditions that facilitate linkage can be maximized. Procedures for determination of the content of the linkage agreement and the development of the process to accomplish the activities also are provided. Finally, suggestions about how to carry out and evaluate the planned activities are provided. Sample forms for a linkage arrangement are offered in appendixes to the manual. (KC)

26. Metropolitan Programs in Applied Biological and Agricultural Occupations; A Need and Attitude Study. Final Report.

Abstract

To establish the feasibility of implementing applied biological and agricultural occupations programs in the metropolitan area of Chicago, four populations were surveyed by means of mailed questionnaires or interest inventories to determine: (1) the employment opportunities in the applied biological and agricultural industries, (2) the interests and attitudes of students, (3) the attitudes of school administrators, and (4) the attitudes and willingness of teachers to teach courses in applied biological and agricultural occupations. The procedures utilized to select the population, instrumentation, data, results, and conclusions are presented separately for each of the four populations. Some major conclusions were: (1) Administrators and teachers have generally positive attitudes toward the development of applied biological and agricultural programs, (2) Many teachers and administrators felt that not enough students are interested in these occupations, (3) Student interest in the applied biological and agricultural areas compared favorably with industrial and health occupations but not with business and office as personal and public service occupations, and (4) Ample job opportunities exist to merit the implementation of programs in applied biology and agriculture. 27. Educational Program Development for the Rural Disadvantaged. Research Report.

Abstract

As part of a far-reaching research project on educational needs of the rural disadvantaged, this phase of the Rural Education Disadvantaged Youth Project (Project REDY) dealt with the development and evaluation of a vocationally-oriented family-centered educational program. The model program, which was field-tested at a single site, focused upon: (1) youth and their career choices, (2) family financial management, and (3) improvement of family income. 28. Evaluation of an Educational Program for the Rural Disadvantaged. Research Report.

Abstract

The objective of this phase of the Rural Education Disadvantaged Youth Project (Project REDY) was to evaluate the model vocationally-oriented educational program that was developed in an earlier phase of the research. This educational program focused upon (1) youth and career choices, (2) family financial management, and (3) improvement of family income. Based upon pre- and posttest data for a control group and an experimental group and upon data gathered from standardized instruments, interview schedules, and school records, results included information pertaining to: (1) family residence, (2) financial assistance, (3) characteristics of adults, (4) situation and goals of children, (5) parental desires for their children, (6) the home environment, and (7) leisure time activities. One major conclusion of the study was that a local school teacher can conduct an effective family-centered vocationally-oriented education program which will produce significant changes in the attitudes and situations of severely disadvantaged rural family members. 29. Attitudes of Metropolitan Chicago Administrators Toward Applied Biological and Agricultural Occupations Programs.

Abstract

The attitudes of administrators in a metropolitan area toward starting programs in applied and agricultural occupations and other vocational areas were studied in order to determine their willingness in promoting the programs. The sample consisted of 120 school administrators from the city of Chicago and contiguous suburbs. Data were collected using an opinionnaire consisting of 41 items with a 5-point scale provided for the response. Analyses were used to compare the attitudes of the suburban and city administrators toward the various areas of vocational education, and to determine the frequency with which the administrators responded to the various response categories for each item on the instrument. It was concluded that: (1) Schools in the area can be identified in which administrative staff are receptive to the development of vocational programs, (2) Administrators have a generally positive attitude toward the development of programs in agriculture, and (3) Additional information regarding applied biological and agricultural occupations should be supplied to the administrators. 30. Attitudes of Suburban Chicago Teachers Toward Applied Biological and Agricultural Occupations Programs.

Abstract

The attitudes of teachers in a metropolitan area toward starting programs in applied biological and agricultural occupations and other vocational areas were studied in order to establish a base line of attitudes with which program implementation must start. Specific objectives were to: (1) determine the attitude of teachers toward offering such programs, (2) ascertain to what degree the teachers are prepared to teach such courses, (3) determine the willingness of teachers to become competent in teaching the courses, and (4) determine the willingness of teachers to teach the courses. The sample population was drawn from the target population of all secondary schools in the city of Chicago and the contiguous suburbs. Date were collected through an opinionnaire which was distributed by officials within the schools. Of the 661 teachers who received an opinionnaire, 273 completed and returned the instrument. The attitude of the teachers was very favorable, approximately one-fourth of the respondents indicated that they would be willing to help establish such a program, and some felt that they were competent to teach in each of the various areas. 31. Employment Opportunities in Applied Biological and Agricultural Occupations in the Metropolitan Area of Chicago.

Abstract

Based on questionnaire data collected from a sample of employers, this phase of a larger research project ascertained employment opportunities in the area of applied biological and agricultural occupations in the metropolitan area of Chicago. Specific fields of business surveyed by stratified random sample were animal care, animal health care, arboriculture, floriculture, golf course related, landscaping, nursery and lawn care, small engine sales and service, and recreation. The data were analyzed by summing the number of job opportunities in each job title and projecting the data from the sample to estimate its total job opportunities in the population. A major conclusion of the study was that ample job opportunities exist in the Chicago area to merit the implementation of vocational programs in applied biological and agricultural occupations. (JS)

32. Vocational Interest of Students in the Suburban Area of Chicago.

Abstract

A random sample of 60 ninth grade students from each of four schools in suburban areas of Chicago was obtained to ascertain student interest in vocational education, more specifically in applied biological and agricultural occupations, by means of a Career Interest Inventory. Mean item scores were obtained in order to make a comparison between scales on the Inventory. Interest in applied biographical and agricultural occupations compared favorably with industrial and health-oriented occupations. Implementation of a program in applied biological and agricultural occupations was deemed feasible because more than 10 percent of the students expressed interest in animal science, agribusiness, plant science, forestry, agricultural mechanics, and agricultural resources. Courses common to several areas should be developed, taking into account high interest in occupational areas involving forests, air, water, and recreation. Student interest in related business and office occupations was strong for most areas of specialization on the Inventory. Tables display the data. (AG)

34. The Effects of Social Position, Race, and Sex on Work Values of Ninth Grade Students.

Abstract

This study investigated the effect of social class, race, and sex on the work values of ninth-grade students in a large metropolitan area. Measures of work values were obtained using Super's (1970) Work Values Inventory. Results indicated that race and sex have differential effects on the development of work values. Significant differences between black and white students appeared for the variables of associates, altruism, variety, and intellectual stimulation. Males and females varied on creativity and altruism. Where signficant differences appeared between blacks and whites, white students in all cases expressed greater value for each of the work value constructs. In general, black females of low social position scored low on the work values scales. (Author/RS)

35. Renewal of Currently Employed Teachers as Teachers of Applied Biological and Agricultural Occupations. Final Report.

Abstract

A workshop of interested science teachers from the metropolitan area of Illinois sought to increase their awareness of the career opportunities for their students in the biological and agricultural occupations that exist locally. The main purpose of the project was to establish programs in the metropolitan areas designed to match the interests of students with the needs of business/industry in these occupational fields. Employed methodological procedures included: (1) designing and conducting appropriate workshops, (2) evaluating their effectiveness, and (3) recruiting participants. Some 62 teachers from secondary schools in Chicago were involved in the eleven 3-hour sessions. Participant proposals and questionnaire responses provided the evaluation data from which findings and conclusions were generated. Most of the participants indicated they would be initiating new programs or including some aspect of applied biological occupations in their existing programs and expressed a need to acquire appropriate occupational technical knowledge and skills. Abstract

The cardinal objective of Project REDY was the development of a vocationally oriented, family centered educational program in a depressed rural area. However, before a workable educational program could be developed, the status quo of severely disadvantaged rural families had to be ascertained. In order to do this, the "Minnesota Survey of Opinion" was given to a random sample of 31 heads of household identified as being socially or economically disadvantaged and to 82 heads of households representing a cross-section of the population in a southern Illinois county. Scores were obtained on general adjustment (degree to which a person has adjusted to his environment) and total morale (assessment including attitudes toward personal inferiority, family, law, conservatism, and education). A general adjustment score was arrived at by comparing the negative and positive responses of the other 2 variables. Results indicated that the severely disadvantaged families had a significantly lower morale and poorer general adjustment than did the sample of the total population of families in the same geographic area. Abstract

Developed as part of a project designed to provide a synthesis of the literature and practice relating to the career education of disadvantaged students, this review is intended to inform teachers about research and techniques for motivating disadvantaged students. Section I discusses the nature of motivation and describes the basic human needs that motivate individuals, including psychological needs, love needs, safety needs, esteem needs, self-actualization needs, and the desire to know and understand. Section II offers an overview of research relating to such basic motivation constructs as self concept, locus of control of reinforcement, aspirations, and self-actualization. Motivating techniques such as the use of rewards and successes, feedback and reinforcement, setting goals, and creative thinking are explored and evaluated in Section III. Some conclusions drawn from this review were: (1) A major portion of the motivation research is directed toward ascertaining the global self-concept of the disadvantaged student; (2) Changing the locus of control of reinforcement from external to internal appears to be a primary objective of career educators; and (3) The development of sub-goals to achieve a long-range aspiration is more effective than are long-range goals. Abstract

There has been much speculation about a possible association between the social and built environment and health, but the empirical evidence is still elusive. The social and built environments are best seen as contextual concepts but they are usually estimated as an aggregation of individual compositional measures, such as perceptions on trust or the desirability to live in an area. If these aggregated compositional measures were valid measures, one would expect that they would evince correlations at higher levels of data collection (e.g., neighbourhood). The aims of this paper are: (1) to investigate the factor structure of a self-administered questionnaire measuring individual perceptions of trust, social participation, social cohesion, social control, and the built environment; (2) to investigate variation in these factors at higher than the individual level (households and postcodes) in order to assess if these constructs reflect some contextual effect; and (3) to study the association between mental health, as measured by the General Health Questionnaire-12 (GHQ-12), and these derived factors. A cross-sectional household survey was undertaken during May-August 2001 in a district of South Wales with a population of 140,000. We found that factor analysis grouped our questions in factors similar to the theoretical ones we had previously envisaged. We also found that approximately one-third of the variance for neighbourhood quality and 10% for social control was explained at postcode (neighbourhood) level after adjusting for individual variables, thus suggesting that some of our compositional measures capture contextual characteristics of the built and social environment. After adjusting for individual variables, trust and social cohesion, two key social capital components were the only factors to show statistically significant associations with GHQ-12 scores. However, these factors also showed little variation at postcode levels, suggesting a stronger individual determination. We conclude that our results provide some evidence in support of an association between mental health (GHQ-12 scores) and perceptions of social capital, but less support for the contextual nature of social capital.
