Previously, we modelled the X-ray spectra of the narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy IRAS 13224$-$3809 using a disc reflection model with a fixed electron density of $10^{15}$ cm$^{-3}$. An additional blackbody component was required to fit the soft X-ray excess below 2 keV. In this work, we analyse simultaneously five flux-resolved XMM-Newton spectra of this source comprising data collected over 2 Ms. A disc reflection model with an electron density of $n_{\rm e}\approx10^{20}$ cm$^{-3}$ and an iron abundance of $Z_{\rm Fe}=3.2\pm0.5Z_{\odot}$ is used to fit the broad-band spectra of this source. No additional component is required to fit the soft excess. Our best-fit model provides consistent measurements of black hole spin and disc inclination angle as in previous models where a low disc density was assumed. In the end, we calculate the average illumination distance between the corona and the reflection region in the disc of IRAS 13224$-$3809 based on best-fit density and ionisation parameters, which changes from 0.43$\sqrt{f_{\rm AD}/f_{\rm INF}}$ $r_{\rm g}$ in the lowest flux state to 1.71$\sqrt{f_{\rm AD}/f_{\rm INF}}$ $r_{\rm g}$ in the highest flux state assuming a black hole mass of $2\times10^{6}M_{\odot}$. $f_{\rm AD}/f_{\rm INF}$ is the ratio between the flux of the coronal emission that reaches the accretion disc and infinity. This ratio depends on the geometry of the coronal region in IRAS 13224$-$3809. So we only discuss its value based on the simple `lamp-post' model, although detailed modelling of the disc emissivity profile of IRAS 13224$-$3809 is required in future to reveal the exact geometry of the corona., Comment: 17 pages, 15 figures including appendices; accepted for publication in MNRAS

The Athena X-ray Integral Unit (X-IFU) is the high resolution X-ray spectrometer, studied since 2015 for flying in the mid-30s on the Athena space X-ray Observatory, a versatile observatory designed to address the Hot and Energetic Universe science theme, selected in November 2013 by the Survey Science Committee. Based on a large format array of Transition Edge Sensors (TES), it aims to provide spatially resolved X-ray spectroscopy, with a spectral resolution of 2.5 eV (up to 7 keV) over an hexagonal field of view of 5 arc minutes (equivalent diameter). The X-IFU entered its System Requirement Review (SRR) in June 2022, at about the same time when ESA called for an overall X-IFU redesign (including the X-IFU cryostat and the cooling chain), due to an unanticipated cost overrun of Athena. In this paper, after illustrating the breakthrough capabilities of the X-IFU, we describe the instrument as presented at its SRR, browsing through all the subsystems and associated requirements. We then show the instrument budgets, with a particular emphasis on the anticipated budgets of some of its key performance parameters. Finally we briefly discuss on the ongoing key technology demonstration activities, the calibration and the activities foreseen in the X-IFU Instrument Science Center, and touch on communication and outreach activities, the consortium organisation, and finally on the life cycle assessment of X-IFU aiming at minimising the environmental footprint, associated with the development of the instrument. Thanks to the studies conducted so far on X-IFU, it is expected that along the design-to-cost exercise requested by ESA, the X-IFU will maintain flagship capabilities in spatially resolved high resolution X-ray spectroscopy, enabling most of the original X-IFU related scientific objectives of the Athena mission to be retained. We present a new release of the RELTRANS model to fit the complex cross-spectrum of accreting black holes as a function of energy. The model accounts for continuum lags and reverberation lags self-consistently in order to consider the widest possible range of X-ray variability timescales. We introduce a more self-consistent treatment of the reverberation lags, accounting for how the time variations of the illuminating flux change the ionisation level of the accretion disc. This process varies the shape of the reflection spectrum in time causing an additional source of lags besides the light crossing delay. We also consider electron densities in the accretion disc up to $10^{20}$ cm$^{-3}$, which are found in most of the stellar mass black holes and in some AGN. These high densities increase the amplitude of the reverberation lags below $1$ keV since the reflection flux enhances in the same energy range. In addition, we investigate the properties of hard lags produced by variations in the power-law index of the continuum spectrum, which can be interpreted as due to roughly $3\%$ variability in the corona's optical depth and temperature. As a test case, we simultaneously fit the lag energy spectra in a wide range of Fourier frequency for the black hole candidate MAXI J1820+070 observed with NICER. The best fit shows how the reverberation lags contribute even at the longer timescales where the hard lags are important. This proves the importance of modelling these two lags together and self-consistently in order to constrain the parameters of the system., Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present the first high signal-to-noise broadband X-ray spectrum of the radio-quiet type-2 Seyfert ESO 033-G002, combining data from $XMM$-$Newton$ and $NuSTAR$. The nuclear X-ray spectrum is complex, showing evidence for both neutral and ionised absorption, as well as reflection from both the accretion disc and more distant material, but our broadband coverage allows us to disentangle all of these different components. The total neutral column during this epoch is $N_{\rm{H}} \sim 5-6 \times 10^{22}$ cm$^{-2}$, consistent with the optical classification of ESO 033-G002 as a type-2 Seyfert but not so large as to prevent us from robustly determining the properties of the innermost accretion flow. The ionised absorption - dominated by lines from Fe XXV and Fe XXVI - reveals a moderately rapid outflow ($v_{\rm{out}} \sim 5400$ km s$^{-1}$) which has a column comparable to the neutral absorption. We find the disc reflection from the innermost regions to be extreme, with a reflection fraction of $R_{\rm{frac}} \sim 5$. This requires strong gravitational lightbending and, in turn, both an extremely compact corona (within $\sim$2 $R_{\rm{G}}$ of the black hole) and a rapidly rotating black hole ($a^* > 0.96$). Despite this tight size constraint, with a temperature of $kT_{\rm{e}} = 40-70$ keV the X-ray corona in ESO 033-G002 appears similar to other AGN in terms of its placement in the compactness-temperature plane, consistent with sitting close to the limit determined by runaway pair production. Finally, combining X-ray spectroscopy, timing and updated optical spectroscopy, we also estimate the mass of the black hole to be $\log[M_{\rm{BH}} / M_{\odot}] \sim 7.0 - 7.5$., 15 pages, 8 figures; published in MNRAS

SS433 is the only Galactic binary system known to persistently accrete at highly super-critical (or hyper-critical) rates, similar to those in tidal disruption events, and likely needed to explain the rapid growth of those very high redshift quasars containing massive SMBHs. Probing the inner regions of SS433 in the X-rays is crucial to understanding this system, and super-critical accretion in general, but is highly challenging due to obscuration by the surrounding wind, driven from the accretion flow. NuSTAR observed SS433 in the hard X-ray band across multiple phases of its 162 day super-orbital precession period. Spectral-timing tools allow us to infer that the hard X-ray emission from the inner regions is likely being scattered towards us by the walls of the wind-cone. By comparing to numerical models, we determine an intrinsic X-ray luminosity of $\ge$ 2$\times$10$^{37}$ erg/s and that, if viewed face on, we would infer an apparent luminosity of $>$ 1$\times$10$^{39}$ erg/s, confirming SS433's long-suspected nature as an ultraluminous X-ray source (ULX). We present the discovery of a narrow, $\sim 100$s lag due to atomic processes occurring in outflowing material travelling at least 0.14-0.29c, which matches absorption lines seen in ULXs and -- in the future -- will allow us to map a super-critical outflow for the first time., 14 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Novae are caused by runaway thermonuclear burning in the hydrogen-rich envelopes of accreting white dwarfs, which results in the envelope to expand rapidly and to eject most of its mass. For more than 30 years, nova theory has predicted the existence of a "fireball" phase following directly the runaway fusion, which should be observable as a short, bright, and soft X-ray flash before the nova becomes visible in the optical. Here we present the unequivocal detection of an extremely bright and very soft X-ray flash of the classical Galactic nova YZ Reticuli 11 hours prior to its 9 mag optical brightening. No X-ray source was detected 4 hours before and after the event, constraining the duration of the flash to shorter than 8 hours. In agreement with theoretical predictions, the source's spectral shape is consistent with a black body of $3.27^{+0.11}_{-0.33}\times 10^5$ K ($28.2^{+0.9}_{-2.8}$ eV), or a white dwarf atmosphere, radiating at the Eddington luminosity, with a photosphere that is only slightly larger than a typical white dwarf. This detection of the expanding white dwarf photosphere before the ejection of the envelope provides the last link of the predicted photospheric lightcurve evolution and opens a new window to measure the total nova energetics., Comment: Published in Nature on 11 May 2022

We present an analysis of the NuSTAR and Swift spectra of the black hole candidate MAXI J1813-095 in a failed-transition outburst in 2018. The NuSTAR observations show evidence of reflected emission from the inner region of the accretion disc. By modelling the reflection component in the spectra, we find a disc inner radius of $R_{\rm in}, 9 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

The discovery of neutron stars powering several ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) raises important questions about the nature of the underlying population. In this paper we build on previous work studying simulated populations by incorporating a model where the emission originates from a precessing, geometrically beamed wind-cone, created by a super-critical inflow. We obtain estimates -- independent of the prescription for the precession period of the wind -- for the relative number of ULXs that are potentially visible (persistent or transient) for a range of underlying factors such as the relative abundance of black holes or neutron stars within the population, maximum precessional angle, and LMXB duty cycle. We make initial comparisons to existing data using a catalogue compiled from XMM-Newton. Finally, based on estimates for the precession period, we determine how the eROSITA all-sky survey (eRASS) will be able to constrain the underlying demographic., 14 pages, 8 Figures, Accepted submission MNRAS

Relativistic reflection features are commonly observed in the X-ray spectra of accreting black holes. In the presence of high quality data and with the correct astrophysical model, X-ray reflection spectroscopy can be quite a powerful tool to probe the strong gravity region, study the morphology of the accreting matter, measure black hole spins, and possibly test Einstein's theory of general relativity in the strong field regime. In the last decade, there has been significant progress in the development of the analysis of these features, thanks to more sophisticated astrophysical models and new observational facilities. Here we review the state-of-the-art in relativistic reflection modeling, listing assumptions and simplifications that may affect, at some level, the final measurements and may be investigated better in the future. We review black hole spin measurements and the most recent efforts to use X-ray reflection spectroscopy for testing fundamental physics., 64 pages, 23 figures. The blazar Mrk 421 shows frequent, short flares in the TeV energy regime. Due to the fast nature of such episodes, we often fail to obtain sufficient simultaneous information about flux variations in several energy bands. To overcome this lack of multi-wavelength (MWL) coverage, especially for the pre- and post-flare periods, we have set up a monitoring program with the FACT telescope (TeV energies) and the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory (X-rays). On 2019 June 9, Mrk 421 showed a TeV outburst reaching a flux level of more than two times the flux of the Crab Nebula at TeV energies. We acquired simultaneous data in the X-rays with additional observations by XMM-Newton and INTEGRAL. For the first time, we can study a TeV blazar in outburst taking advantage of highly sensitive X-ray data from XMM-Newton and INTEGRAL combined. Our dataset is complemented by pointed radio observations by Effelsberg at GHz frequencies. [Context] The eROSITA Final Equatorial Depth Survey (eFEDS), observed with eROSITA ahead of its planned 4-yr all-sky survey, is the largest contiguous-field X-ray survey at present. It yielded a large sample of X-ray sources with very rich multiband photometric and spectroscopic coverage., [Aims] We present here the eFEDS active galactic nuclei (AGN) catalog and the eROSITA X-ray spectral properties of the eFEDS sources., [Methods] Using a Bayesian method, we performed a systematic X-ray spectral analysis for all the eFEDS sources. We adopted multiple spectral models, including single-component power-law or hot-plasma models and double-component models of a power law plus soft excess. We investigated the capacity of eROSITA X-ray spectra for constraining AGN spectral shapes through a detailed analysis of the posterior parameter probability distribution functions. Hierarchical Bayesian modeling was used to recover the spectral parameter distribution of the sample. The source fluxes and luminosities were measured from the posterior of the spectral fitting., [Results] The eFEDS AGN catalog (22 079 sources) comprises ~80% of the eFEDS point sources. Despite a large number of faint sources, our spectral fitting provides reasonable measurements of spectral shapes and intrinsic luminosities for a majority of the sources. Because of sample selection bias, this AGN catalog is dominated by X-ray unobscured sources, with an obscured (logNH > 21.5) fraction of 8%; the power-law emission of the hot corona is also relatively soft, with a typical slope of 2.0. For type-I AGN, the X-ray emission is well correlated with the UV emission with the usual anticorrelation between the X-ray to UV spectral slope αOX and the UV luminosity. We present developments in the simulation of transition-edge sensor (TES) microcalorimeters under AC bias for the purpose of detector studies. The presented model extends the TES differential equation system by describing the TES as a resistively shunted junction, using the Josephson equations instead of a parametrized resistance. To demonstrate the performance of this model, we compare simulated and measured IV curves of a pixel characterized for the Athena X-ray Integral Field Unit and showcase the signal generated by a simulated X-ray pulse.

We present the publicly available model \textsc{reltrans} that calculates the light-crossing delays and energy shifts experienced by X-ray photons originally emitted close to the black hole when they reflect from the accretion disk and are scattered into our line-of-sight, accounting for all general relativistic effects. Our model is fast and flexible enough to be simultaneously fit to the observed energy-dependent cross-spectrum for a large range of Fourier frequencies, as well as to the time-averaged spectrum. This not only enables better geometric constraints than only modelling the relativistically broadened reflection features in the time-averaged spectrum, but additionally enables constraints on the mass of supermassive black holes in active galactic nuclei and stellar-mass black holes in X-ray binaries. We include a self-consistently calculated radial profile of the disk ionization parameter and properly account for the effect that the telescope response has on the predicted time lags. We find that a number of previous spectral analyses have measured artificially low source heights due to not accounting for the former effect and that timing analyses have been affected by the latter. In particular, the magnitude of the soft lags in active galactic nuclei may have been under-estimated, and the magnitude of lags attributed to thermal reverberation in X-ray binaries may have been over-estimated. We fit \textsc{reltrans} to the lag-energy spectrum of the Seyfert galaxy Mrk 335, resulting in a best fitting black hole mass that is smaller than previous optical reverberation measurements ($\sim 7$ million compared with $\sim14-26$ million $M_\odot$)., Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 24 pages, 17 figures. Fibre print-through on the surfaces of composites emerges as a consequence of the heterogeneous mix of matrix and reinforcing fibres and is one of the obvious surface imperfections that differentiates them from conventional materials. Visible surfaces in the body shell of vehicles demand high Class A requirements without any surface imperfections. Currently, fibre print-through on glossy painted surfaces is evaluated subjectively by human auditors. An overreliance on subjective human evaluation has arisen due to a lack of methods and parameters for characterising this phenomenon. To understand which characteristics are responsible for human perception and to determine suitable parameters for the evaluation of print-through effects, the subjective perception of 25 participants measured by multidimensional scaling is correlated to a fitted parameter regarding fibre print-through and conventional parameters such as long- or shortwave, or the arithmetic mean R a . The comparison of various characteristics of fibre print-through to coated aluminium enables a limiting value to be set based on perception.

We analyze 5 epochs of NICER data of the black hole X-ray binary MAXI J1820+070 during the bright hard-to-soft state transition in its 2018 outburst with both reflection spectroscopy and Fourier-resolved timing analysis. We confirm the previous discovery of reverberation lags in the hard state, and find that the frequency range where the (soft) reverberation lag dominates decreases with the reverberation lag amplitude increasing during the transition, suggesting an increasing X-ray emitting region, possibly due to an expanding corona. By jointly fitting the lag-energy spectra in a number of broad frequency ranges with the reverberation model reltrans, we find the increase in reverberation lag is best described by an increase in the X-ray coronal height. This result, along with the finding that the corona contracts in the hard state, suggests a close relationship between spatial extent of the X-ray corona and the radio jet. We find the corona expansion (as probed by reverberation) precedes a radio flare by ~5 days, which may suggest that the hard-to-soft transition is marked by the corona expanding vertically and launching a jet knot that propagates along the jet stream at relativistic velocities., 16 pages, 10 figures, accepted to be published in ApJL

eROSITA (extended ROentgen Survey with an Imaging Telescope Array) is the primary instrument on the Spectrum-Roentgen-Gamma (SRG) mission, which was successfully launched on July 13, 2019, from the Baikonour cosmodrome. After the commissioning of the instrument and a subsequent calibration and performance verification phase, eROSITA started a survey of the entire sky on December 13, 2019. By the end of 2023, eight complete scans of the celestial sphere will have been performed, each lasting six months. At the end of this program, the eROSITA all-sky survey in the soft X-ray band (0.2--2.3\,keV) will be about 25 times more sensitive than the ROSAT All-Sky Survey, while in the hard band (2.3--8\,keV) it will provide the first ever true imaging survey of the sky. The eROSITA design driving science is the detection of large samples of galaxy clusters up to redshifts $z>1$ in order to study the large-scale structure of the universe and test cosmological models including Dark Energy. In addition, eROSITA is expected to yield a sample of a few million AGNs, including obscured objects, revolutionizing our view of the evolution of supermassive black holes. The survey will also provide new insights into a wide range of astrophysical phenomena, including X-ray binaries, active stars, and diffuse emission within the Galaxy. Results from early observations, some of which are presented here, confirm that the performance of the instrument is able to fulfil its scientific promise. The eROSITA X-ray telescope on board the Spectrum-Roentgen-Gamma (SRG) satellite has started to detect new X-ray sources over the full sky at an unprecedented rate. Understanding the performance and selection function of the source detection is important for the subsequent scientific analysis of the eROSITA catalogs. Through simulations, we test and optimize the eROSITA source detection procedures, and we characterize the detected catalog quantitatively. Taking the eROSITA Final Equatorial-Depth Survey (eFEDS) as an example, we ran extensive photon-event simulations based on our best knowledge of the instrument characteristics, the background spectrum, and the population of astronomical X-ray sources. We introduce a method of analyzing source detection completeness, purity, and efficiency based on the origin of each photon. According to the source detection efficiency measured in the simulation, we chose a two-pronged strategy to build eROSITA X-ray catalogs, creating a main catalog using only the most sensitive band (0.2-2.3 keV) and an independent hard-band-selected catalog using multiband detection in a range up to 5 keV. Because our mock data are highly representative of the real eFEDS data, we used the mock catalogs to measure the completeness and purity of the eFEDS catalogs as a function of multiple parameters, such as detection likelihood, flux, and luminosity. These measurements provide a basis for choosing the eFEDS catalog selection thresholds. The mock catalogs (available with this paper) can be used to construct the selection function of active galactic nuclei and galaxy clusters. 12 pags., 4 figs., Large effect pigments, widely used in various fields of industrial applications, produce characteristic visual textures known as sparkle and graininess, which need to be quantified by objective or subjective methods. The development of preliminary measurement scales for sparkle and graininess, whose recommendation is now under discussion in the International Commission on Illumination (CIE), is described in this article. These scales are absolute, linear and traceable to standards of optical radiation metrology. The main purpose of this article is to justify the convenience of adopting these preliminary measurements scales, showing clear evidence that they correlate well with subjective evaluations. We propose the development of X-ray interferometry (XRI), to reveal the universe at high energies with ultra-high spatial resolution. With baselines which can be accommodated on a single spacecraft, XRI can reach 100 $\mu$as resolution at 10 \AA (1.2 keV) and 20 $\mu$as at 2 \AA (6 keV), enabling imaging and imaging-spectroscopy of (for example) X-ray coronae of nearby accreting supermassive black holes (SMBH) and the SMBH `shadow'; SMBH accretion flows and outflows; X-ray binary winds and orbits; stellar coronae within ~100 pc and many exoplanets which transit across them. For sufficiently luminous sources XRI will resolve sub-pc scales across the entire observable universe, revealing accreting binary SMBHs and enabling trigonometric measurements of the Hubble constant with X-ray light echoes from quasars or explosive transients. A multi-spacecraft `constellation' interferometer would resolve well below 1 $\mu$as, enabling SMBH event horizons to be resolved in many active galaxies and the detailed study of the effects of strong field gravity on the dynamics and emission from accreting gas close to the black hole., Comment: White Paper submitted in response to ESA's Voyage 2050 call

After 34 years, the black-hole candidate EXO 1846-031 went into outburst again in 2019. We investigate its spectral properties in the hard intermediate and the soft states with NuSTAR and Insight-HXMT. A reflection component has been detected in the two spectral states but possibly originating from different illumination spectra: in the intermediate state, the illuminating source is attributed to a hard coronal component, which has been commonly observed in other X-ray binaries, whereas in the soft state the reflection is probably produced by the disk self-irradiation. Both cases support EXO 1846-031 as a low inclination system of ~40 degrees. An absorption line is clearly detected at ~7.2 keV in the hard intermediate state, corresponding to a highly ionized disk wind (log {\xi} > 6.1) with a velocity up to 0.06c. Meanwhile, quasi-simultaneous radio emissions have been detected before and after the X-rays, implying the co-existence of disk winds and jets in this system. Additionally, the observed wind in this source is potentially driven by magnetic forces. The absorption line disappeared in the soft state and a narrow emission line appeared at ~6.7 keV on top of the reflection component, which may be evidence for disk winds, but data with the higher spectral resolution are required to examine this., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

We present the analysis of X-ray observations of the black hole binary 4U~1630$-$47 using relativistic reflection spectroscopy. We use archival data from the RXTE, Swift, and NuSTAR observatories, taken during different outbursts of the source between $1998$ and $2015$. Our modeling includes two relatively new advances in modern reflection codes: high-density disks, and returning thermal disk radiation. Accretion disks around stellar-mass black holes are expected to have densities well above the standard value assumed in traditional reflection models (i.e., $n_{\rm e}\sim10^{15}~{\rm cm^{-3}}$). New high-density reflection models have important implications in the determination of disk truncation (i.e., the disk inner radius). This is because one must retain self-consistency in the irradiating flux and corresponding disk ionization state, which is a function of disk density and system geometry. We find the disk density is $n_{\rm e}\ge10^{20}~{\rm cm^{-3}}$ across all spectral states. This density, combined with our constraints on the ionization state of the material, implies an irradiating flux impinging on the disk that is consistent with the expected theoretical estimates. Returning thermal disk radiation -- the fraction of disk photons which bend back to the disk producing additional reflection components -- is expected predominantly in the soft state. We show that returning radiation models indeed provide a better fit to the soft state data, reinforcing previous results which show that in the soft state the irradiating continuum may be blackbody emission from the disk itself., Comment: 20 pages, 6 figures, 6 tables, Accepted by ApJ

The Spectroscopy Focusing Array (SFA) onboard the enhanced X-ray Timing and Polarimetry (eXTP) observatory consists of 9 modules, each comprising a Wolter type I telescope with a field of view (FOV) around 16 arcminutes and a focal plane silicon drift detector (SDD) with 19 hexagonal pixels. Due to the large size of each individual SDD pixel (each pixel corresponds to an area of ∼ 3.6 arcminutes in diameter) and the limited pixel number, SFA can not obtain a real image of the observed region like many other X-ray imaging telescopes. Thus, contamination from nearby bright sources needs to be considered when we study the properties of the target source. We simulate such contaminations using the SIXTE simulator. In this paper we present the results by taking observations of the millisecond pulsar PSR J0437–4715 as an example, and discuss the cases for contamination on background or target source respectively.

At low redshifts, the observed baryonic density falls far short of the total number of baryons predicted. Cosmological simulations suggest that these baryons reside in filamentary gas structures, known as the warm-hot intergalactic medium (WHIM). As a result of the high temperatures of these filaments, the matter is highly ionised such that it absorbs and emits far-UV and soft X-ray photons. Athena, the proposed European Space Agency X-ray observatory, aims to detect the `missing' baryons in the WHIM up to redshifts of $z=1$ through absorption in active galactic nuclei and gamma-ray burst afterglow spectra, allowing for the study of the evolution of these large-scale structures of the Universe. This work simulates WHIM filaments in the spectra of GRB X-ray afterglows with Athena using the SImulation of X-ray TElescopes (SIXTE) framework. We investigate the feasibility of their detection with the X-IFU instrument, through O VII ($E=573$ eV) and O VIII ($E=674$ eV) absorption features, for a range of equivalent widths imprinted onto GRB afterglow spectra of observed starting fluxes ranging between $10^{-12}$ and $10^{-10}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$, in the 0.3-10 keV energy band. The analyses of X-IFU spectra by blind line search show that Athena will be able to detect O VII-O VIII absorption pairs with EW$_\mathrm{O VII} > 0.13$ eV and EW$_\mathrm{O VIII} > 0.09$ eV for afterglows with $F>2 \times 10^{-11}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$. This allows for the detection of $\approx$ 45-137 O VII-O VIII absorbers during the four-year mission lifetime. The work shows that to obtain an O VII-O VIII detection of high statistical significance, the local hydrogen column density should be limited at $N_\mathrm{H}, Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

X-ray reflection spectroscopy is a powerful tool for probing the strong gravity region of black holes and can be used for testing general relativity in the strong field regime. Simplifications of the available relativistic reflection models limit the capability of performing accurate measurements of the properties of black holes. In this paper, we present an extension of the model RELXILL_NK in which the accretion disk has a finite thickness rather than being infinitesimally thin. We employ the accretion disk geometry proposed by Taylor & Reynolds (2018) and we construct relativistic reflection models for different values of the mass accretion rate of the black hole. We apply the new model to high quality Suzaku data of the X-ray binary GRS 1915+105 to explore the impact of the thickness of the disk on tests of the Kerr metric., 19 pages, 14 figures. v2: refereed version

Signatures of X-ray reprocessing (reflection) out of an accretion disk are commonly observed in the high-energy spectrum of accreting black holes, and can be used to probe the strong gravity region around these objects. In this paper, we extend previous work in the literature and we employ a full emission model for relativistic reflection in non-Kerr spacetime to demonstrate an approach that tests the Kerr black hole hypothesis. We analyze a composite spectrum obtained with the Proportional Counter Array in the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE), of the stellar-mass black hole GX 339-4 in its brightest hard state. With a remarkable sensitivity of ~0.1% and 40 million counts in the 3-45 keV band to capture the faint features in the reflection spectrum, we demonstrate that it is possible with existing data and an adequate model to place constraints on the black hole spin $a_*$ and the deformation parameter that quantifies the departure from the Kerr metric. Our measurement obtained with the best fit model, which should be regarded as principally a proof of concept, is $a_*=0.92^{+0.07}_{-0.12}$ and $\alpha_{13}=-0.76^{+0.78}_{-0.60}$ with a 90% confidence level and is consistent with the hypothesis that the compact object in GX 339-4 is a Kerr black hole. We also discuss how the physical model choice and the emissivity profile adopted could make an impact on the constraints of $\alpha_{13}$ and spin. We explore the accretion properties of the black hole X-ray binary \j1550\ during its outbursts in 1998/99 and 2000. We model the disk, corona, and reflection components of X-ray spectra taken with the {\it Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer} (\rxte), using the {\tt relxill} suite of reflection models. The key result of our modeling is that the reflection spectrum in the very soft state is best explained by disk self-irradiation, i.e., photons from the inner disk are bent by the strong gravity of the black hole, and reflected off the disk surface. This is the first known detection of thermal disk radiation reflecting off the inner disk. There is also an apparent absorption line at $\sim6.9$ keV which may be evidence of an ionized disk wind. The coronal electron temperature ($kT_{\rm e}$) is, as expected, lower in the brighter outburst of 1998/99, explained qualitatively by more efficient coronal cooling due to irradiating disk photons. The disk inner radius is consistent with being within a few times the innermost stable circular orbit (ISCO) throughout the bright-hard-to-soft states (10s of $r_{\rm g}$ in gravitational units). The disk inclination is low during the hard state, disagreeing with the binary inclination value, and very close to $90^{\circ}$ in the soft state, recovering to a lower value when adopting a blackbody spectrum as the irradiating continuum., 21 pages, 13 figures, accepted by ApJ

International audience; The X-ray Integral Field Unit (X-IFU) will operate an array of more than 3000 Transition Edge Sensor pixels at 90 mK with an unprecedented energy resolution of 2.5 eV at 7 keV. In space, primary cosmic rays and secondary particles produced in the instrument structure will continuously deposit energy on the detector wafer and induce fluctuations on the pixels’ thermal bath. We have investigated through simulations of the X-IFU readout chain how these fluctuations eventually influence the energy measurement of X-ray photons. Realistic timelines of thermal bath fluc-tuations at different positions in the array are generated as a function of a thermal model and the expected distribution of the deposited energy of the charged particles. These are then used to model the TES response to these thermal perturbations and their influence on the onboard energy reconstruction process. Overall, we show that with adequate heatsinking, the main energy resolution degradation effect remains minimal and within the associated resolution allocation of 0.2 eV. We further study how a dedicated triggering algorithm could be put in place to flag the rarer large thermal events
