Abstract In this study, we set out to develop a new social vulnerability index (SVI). In doing so, we suggest some conceptual improvements that can be made to existing methodical approaches to assessing social vulnerability. To make the entanglement of socio-spatial inequalities visible, we are conducting a small-scale study on heterogeneous urban development in the city of Hamburg, Germany. This kind of high-resolution analysis was not previously available, but is increasingly requested by political decision makers. We can thus show hot spots of social vulnerability (SV) in Hamburg, considering the effects of social welfare, education, and age. In doing so, we defined SV as a contextual concept that follows the recent shift in discourse in line with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s (IPCC) concepts of risk and vulnerability. Our SVI consists of two subcomponents: sensitivity and coping capacity. Populated areas of Hamburg were identified using satellite information and merged with the social data units of the city. Areas with high SVI are distributed over the entire city, notably in the district of Harburg and the Reiherstieg quarter in Wilhelmsburg near the Elbe, as well as in the densely populated inner city areas of Eimsbüttel and St. Pauli. As a map at a detailed scale, our SVI can be a useful tool to identify areas where the population is most vulnerable to climate-related hazards. We conclude that an enhanced understanding of urban social vulnerability is a prerequisite for urban risk management and urban resilience planning.

For multi-level systems in hot atomic vapors the interplay between the Doppler shift due to atomic motion and the wavenumber mismatch between driving laser fields strongly influences transmission and absorption properties of the atomic medium. In a three-level atomic ladder-system, Doppler broadening limits the visibility of electromagnetically-induced transparency (EIT) when the probe and control fields are co-propagating, while EIT is recovered under the opposite condition of counter-propagating geometry and $k_\mathrm{p} \lt k_\mathrm{c}$ , with $k_\mathrm{p}$ and $k_\mathrm{c}$ being the wavenumbers of the probe and control fields, respectively. This effect has been studied and experimentally demonstrated as an efficient mechanism to realize non-reciprocal probe light transmission, which may enable applications as magnetic-field free optical isolators. Here, we describe the basics of this effect and discuss a simple picture for the underlying mechanism. We illustrate how the non-reciprocity scales with wavelength mismatch and show how to experimentally demonstrate the effect in a simple Rydberg-EIT system using thermal Rubidium atoms.

Optical interfaces with subwavelength patterns make it possible to manipulate light waves beyond the typical capabilities of ordinary optical media. Subwavelength arrays of ultracold atoms enable such transformations at very low photon losses. Here, we show how the coupling of light to more than a single atomic array can expand these perspectives into the domain of quantum nonlinear optics. While a single array transmits and reflects light in a highly coherent but largely linear fashion, the combination of two arrays is found to induce strong photon-photon interactions that can convert an incoming classical beam into strongly correlated photonic states. Such quantum metasurfaces open up new possibilities for coherently generating and manipulating nonclassical light, and exploring quantum many-body phenomena in two-dimensional systems of strongly interacting photons.

Arrays of highly excited Rydberg atoms can be used as powerful quantum simulation platforms. Here, we introduce an approach that makes it possible to implement fully controllable effective spin interactions in such systems. We show that optical Rydberg dressing with multicolor laser fields opens up distinct interaction channels that enable complete site-selective control of the induced interactions and favorable scaling with respect to decoherence. We apply this method to generate synthetic gauge fields for Rydberg excitations where the effective magnetic flux can be manipulated at the single-plaquette level by simply varying the phase of the local dressing field. The system can be mapped to a highly anisotropic Heisenberg model, and the resulting spin interaction opens the door for explorations of topological phenomena with nonlocal density interactions. A remarkable consequence of the interaction is the emergence of topologically protected long-range doublons, which exhibit strongly correlated motion in a chiral and robust manner.

Previous research showed the existence of Rydberg excitons with large principle quantum numbers in Cu2O. Here, by using two-color pump-probe optical spectroscopy, the authors demonstrate the generation and control of long-range correlations between these giant Rydberg excitons, leading to exciton blockade.

Here, the authors show the formation of exciton-polaritons with enhanced nonlinear response using excited excitonic Rydberg states in monolayer WSe2 embedded in a microcavity.

Considering light-mediated long-range interactions between cold atoms in a magneto-optical trap (MOT), we present numerical evidence of a nonequilibrium steady state (NESS) for sufficiently large number of atoms (>108). This state manifests itself as the appearance of an anisotropic distribution of velocity when a MOT approaches the threshold beyond which self-oscillating instabilities occur. Our three-dimensional (3D) spatiotemporal model with nonlocal spatial dependencies stemming from the interatomic interactions has recently been compared successfully to predict different instability thresholds and regimes in experiments with rubidium atoms. The behavior of the NESS is studied as a function of the main MOT parameters, including its spatiotemporal characteristics.

Spectroscopic and interferometric measurements complement each other in extracting the fundamental properties of quantum many-body systems. While spectroscopy provides precise measurements of equilibrated energies, interferometry can elucidate the dynamical evolution of the system. For an impurity immersed in a bosonic medium, both are equally important for understanding the quasiparticle physics of the Bose polaron. Here, we compare the interferometric and spectroscopic timescales to the underlying dynamical regimes of the impurity dynamics and the polaron lifetime, highlighting the capability of the interferometric approach to clearly resolve polaron dynamics. In particular, interferometric measurements of the coherence amplitude at strong interactions reveal faster quantum dynamics at large repulsive interaction strengths than at unitarity. These observations are in excellent agreement with a short-time theoretical prediction including both the continuum and the attractive polaron branch. For longer times, qualitative agreement with a many-body theoretical prediction which includes both branches is obtained. Moreover, the polaron energy is extracted from interferometric measurements of the observed phase velocity in agreement with previous spectroscopic results from weak to strong attractive interactions. Finally, the phase evolution allows for the measurement of an energetic equilibration timescale, describing the initial approach of the phase velocity to the polaron energy. Theoretically, this is shown to lie within the regime of universal dynamics revealing a fast initial evolution towards the formation of polarons. Our results give a comprehensive picture of the many-body physics governing the Bose polaron and thus validates the quasiparticle framework for further studies.

The scattering between light and individual saturable quantum emitters can induce strong optical nonlinearities and correlations between individual light quanta. Typically, this leads to an effective attraction that can generate exotic bound states of photons, which form quantum mechanical precursors of optical solitons, as found in many optical media. Here, we study the propagation of light through an optical waveguide that is chirally coupled to three-level quantum emitters. We show that the additional laser coupling to a third emitter state not only enables control of the properties of the bound state but can even eliminate it entirely. This makes it possible to turn an otherwise focusing nonlinearity into a repulsive photon-photon interaction. We demonstrate this emerging photon-photon repulsion by analyzing the quantum dynamics of multiple photons in large emitter arrays and reveal a dynamical fragmentation of incident uncorrelated light fields and self-ordering into regular trains of single photons. These striking effects expand the rich physics of waveguide quantum electrodynamics into the domain of repulsive photons and establish a conceptually simple platform to explore optical self-organization phenomena at the quantum level. We discuss implementations of this setting in cold-atom experiments and propose an approach based on arrays of mesoscopic Rydberg-atom ensembles.

We investigate the interaction of weak light fields with two-dimensional lattices of atoms with high lying atomic Rydberg states. This system features different interactions that act on disparate length scales, from zero-range defect scattering of atomic excitations and finite-range dipole exchange processes to long-range Rydberg-state interactions, which span the entire array and can block multiple Rydberg excitations. Analyzing their interplay, we identify conditions that yield a nonlinear quantum mirror which coherently splits incident fields into correlated photon-pairs in a single transverse mode, while transmitting single photons unaffected. In particular, we find strong anti-bunching of the transmitted light with equal-time pair correlations that decrease exponentially with an increasing range of the Rydberg blockade. Such strong photon-photon interactions in the absence of photon losses open up promising avenues for the generation and manipulation of quantum light, and the exploration of many-body phenomena with interacting photons.

Strong optical nonlinearities in polariton systems open up experiments on quantum-correlated states of light. Here, Walther et al. study Rydberg excitons inside a cavity and show how enhanced nonlinearities could be achieved in such systems.

Abstract A submarine hydrothermal fluid discharge structure in Akureyri Bay, Eyjafjörður region, Iceland, was investigated by means of structural, geochemical, and mineralogical methods. Thermal and chemical gradients between the hydrothermal fluid and the subarctic seawater lead to an ongoing mineral precipitation. This process builds up hydrothermal chimneys of dozens of meters in height and they are still growing. The structural analysis reveals an internal stratification of the mineral precipitates at various scales from sub-micrometers to several decimeters. This stratification indicates random changes in the depositional system during the formation of the hydrothermal cones. Some mineral layers are characterized by a dominance of Si, Mg, and O. In contrast, others are dominated by Ca and O. However, the results of XRD analysis proved that the material consists mainly of a trioctahedral phyllosilicate of the smectite group, presumably saponite or stevensite. Additionally, aragonite and hisingerite could be present. The material is built up of numerous parallel tubes, which act as conductors in the hydrothermal chimneys. Consequently, a large amount of available pore space with pore volumes of up to 6 mm3 was detected in the sample by the porosity analysis.

The treatment of end-of-life vehicles generates large amounts of automobile shredder residue (ASR), a potential source of recycled metals. Reliable measurement methods are required to determine the composition of ASR and evaluate the resource potential. We reported on research undertaken to investigate bias and variability in the process of measuring trace metals in ASR. Two primary samples of shredder light fraction (SLF) underwent extensive physical sample preparation and chemical analysis. The samples were spiked to control random variations and systematic effects during physical sample preparation. Chemical analysis was conducted using wavelength-dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (WD-XRF), a fully validated wet-chemical analysis, and a wet-chemical analysis representing an “in-house” lab procedure. Physical sample preparation introduced deviations up to a factor of 2, likely due to preferential losses and heterogeneity. Deviations for WD-XRF measurements of elements were in the range +100%/−50%. In-house chemical analysis produced results that were in good agreement with validated results for Al, Fe and Sn, but led to biased results or high variability for Cd, Dy, La, Nd, Pb, Pd, Pt and Sb. To improve the chemical analysis of trace metals in SLF, we recommended reducing particle size to less than 0.1 mm before chemical analysis and using a larger number of repeated digestions.

From the current perspectives of urban health and environmental justice research, health is the result of a combination of individual, social and environmental factors. Yet, there are only few attempts to determine their joint influence on health and well-being. Grounded in debates surrounding conceptual models and based on a data set compiled for the city of Hamburg, this paper aims to provide insights into the most important variables influencing urban health. Theoretically, we are primarily referring to the conceptual model of health-related urban well-being (UrbWellth), which systemizes urban influences in four sectors. The systematization of the conceptual model is empirically confirmed by a principal component analysis: the factors derived from the data correspond well with the deductively derived model. Additionally, a multiple linear regression analysis was used to identify the most important variables influencing the participant’s self-rated health (SRH): rating of one’s social network, rating of neighborhood air quality, rating of neighborhood health infrastructure, heat stress (day/outdoors), cold stress (night/indoors). When controlling for age, income and smoking behavior, these variables explain 12% of the variance of SRH. Thus, these results support the concept of UrbWellth empirically. Finally, the study design helped to identify hotspots with negative impact on SRH within the research areas.

Coherent many-body quantum dynamics lies at the heart of quantum simulation and quantum computation. Both require coherent evolution in the exponentially large Hilbert space of an interacting many-body system. To date, trapped ions have defined the state of the art in terms of achievable coherence times in interacting spin chains. Here, we establish an alternative platform by reporting on the observation of coherent, fully interaction-driven quantum revivals of the magnetization in Rydberg-dressed Ising spin chains of atoms trapped in an optical lattice. We identify partial many-body revivals at up to about ten times the characteristic time scale set by the interactions. At the same time, single-site-resolved correlation measurements link the magnetization dynamics with interspin correlations appearing at different distances during the evolution. These results mark an enabling step towards the implementation of Rydberg-atom-based quantum annealers, quantum simulations of higher-dimensional complex magnetic Hamiltonians, and itinerant long-range interacting quantum matter.

Segmentation is one of the most important parts of medical image analysis. Manual segmentation is very cumbersome, time-consuming, and prone to inter-observer variability. Fully automatic segmentation approaches require a large amount of labeled training data and may fail in difficult or abnormal cases. In this work, we propose a new method for 2D segmentation of individual slices and 3D interpolation of the segmented slices. The Smart Brush functionality quickly segments the region of interest in a few 2D slices. Given these annotated slices, our adapted formulation of Hermite radial basis functions reconstructs the 3D surface. Effective interactions with less number of equations accelerate the performance and, therefore, a real-time and an intuitive, interactive segmentation of 3D objects can be supported effectively. The proposed method is evaluated on 12 clinical 3D magnetic resonance imaging data sets and are compared to gold standard annotations of the left ventricle from a clinical expert. The automatic evaluation of the 2D Smart Brush resulted in an average Dice coefficient of 0.88 ± 0.09 for the individual slices. For the 3D interpolation using Hermite radial basis functions, an average Dice coefficient of 0.94 ± 0.02 is achieved.

Coupling photons to Rydberg excitations in a cold atomic gas yields unprecedentedly large optical nonlinearities at the level of individual light quanta. Here, the basic mechanism exploits the strong interactions between Rydberg atoms to block the formation of nearby dark-state polaritons. However, the dissipation associated with this mechanism ultimately limits the performance of many practical applications. In this work, we propose a new approach to strong photon interactions via a largely coherent mechanism at drastically suppressed photon losses. Rather than a polariton blockade, it is based on an interaction-induced conversion between distinct types of dark-state polaritons with different propagation characteristics. We outline a specific implementation of this approach and show that it permits us to turn a single photon into an effective mirror with a robust and continuously tunable reflection phase. We describe potential applications, including a detailed discussion of achievable operational fidelities.

Due to a constant immigration of young people (students, apprentices and young employees) cities developing prosperously, like Hamburg, Germany, seem to be not affected by consequences of demographic change like population ageing in the first place. A small-scale analysis of the demographic change within the city shows, that the monofunctional residential areas in the suburban districts are not positively affected by the immigration. The population in these areas shows, in contrast, a significant concentration of older people. This development will become increasingly important for urban planning practice and urban policy in the near future.

We study the phase diagram of a two-dimensional assembly of bosons interacting via a soft-core repulsive pair potential of varying strength, and compare it to that of the equivalent system in which particles are regarded as distinguishable. We show that quantum-mechanical exchanges stabilize a ‘cluster crystal’ phase in a wider region of parameter space than predicted by calculations in which exchanges are neglected. This physical effect is diametrically opposite to that which takes place in hard-core Bose systems such as ^4 He, wherein exchanges strengthen the fluid phase. This is underlain in the cluster crystal phase of soft-core bosons by the free energy gain associated with the formation of local Bose–Einstein condensates.
