Search

NGC 3311 is the central galaxy of the Hydra I galaxy cluster. It has a hot interstellar medium and hosts a central dust lane with emission lines. These dust lanes are frequent in elliptical galaxies, but the case of NGC 3311 might be particularly interesting for problems of dust lifetime and the role of cool gas in the central parts. We aim to use archival HST images and MUSE data to investigate the central dust structure of NGC 3311. We used the tool PyParadise to model the stellar population and extract the emission lines. The HST/ACS colour map reveals the known dust structures, but also blue spots, which are places of strong line emission. A dusty 'mini-jet' emanates from the centre. The distribution of the emission line gas matches the dust silhouette almost exactly. Close to the brightest Halpha emission, the ratio [NII]/Halpha resembles that of HII-regions; in the outer parts, [NII] gets stronger and is similar to LINER-like spectra. The gas kinematics is consistent with that of a rotating disc. The Doppler shifts of the strongest line emissions, which indicate the areas of highest star formation activity, smoothly fit into the disc symmetry. The metallicity is supersolar. The presence of neutral gas is indicated by the fit residuals of the stellar NaI D absorption line, which we interpret as interstellar absorption. We estimate the mass of the neutral gas to be of the order of the X-ray mass. The dynamical mass infers a stellar population of intermediate age, whose globular clusters have already been identified. Our findings can be harmonised in a scenario in which the star formation is triggered by the accretion of cold gas onto a pre-existing gas/dust disc or ring. An intriguing silhouette of a small dust patch can be seen against the disk of the S0 galaxy NGC 3269 in the Antlia cluster in optical images. The images do not provide any clue as to whether the patch is a local Jupiter mass-scale cloudlet or a large extragalactic dust complex. We aim to resolve the nature of this object: is it a small Galactic cloudlet or an extragalactic dust complex? ALMA and APEX spectroscopy and Gemini GMOS long-slit spectroscopy were used to measure the velocity of the patch and the NGC 3269 disk radial velocity curve. A weak 16$\pm$2.5 km/s wide $^{12}$CO (2-1) T$_{MB}$ 19$\pm$2.5 mK line in a 2.0" by 2.12" beam associated with the object was detected with ALMA. The observed heliocentric velocity, V$_r$,hel = 3878$\pm$5.0km/s, immediately establishes the extragalactic nature of the object. The patch velocity is consistent with the velocity of the nucleus of NGC 3269, but not with the radial velocity of the NGC 3269 disk of the galaxy at its position. The $\sim$4" angular size of the patch corresponds to a linear size of $\sim$1 kpc at the galaxy's Hubble distance of (d/50.7 Mpc)$^2$ Msun, while the attenuation derived from the optical spectrum implies a dust mass of $\sim$2.6x10$^4$ (d/50.7 Mpc)$^2$ Msun. The derived attenuation ratio A'$_B$/(A'$_B$-A'$_R$) of 1.6$\pm$0.11 is substantially lower than the corresponding value for the mean Milky Way extinction curve for point sources (2.3). We established the extragalactic nature of the patch, but its origin remains elusive. The isolated elliptical (IE) NGC 7796 is accompanied by an interesting early-type dwarf galaxy, named NGC7796-DW1. It exhibits a tidal tail, very boxy isophotes, and multiple nuclei or regions (A, B, and C) that are bluer than the bulk population of the galaxy, indicating a younger age. These properties are suggestive of a dwarf-dwarf merger remnant. We use the Multi-Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) at the VLT to investigate NGC 7796-DW1. We extract characteristic spectra to which we apply the STARLIGHT population synthesis software to obtain ages and metallicities of the various population components of the galaxy. The galaxy's main body is old and metal-poor. A surprising result is the extended line emission in the galaxy, forming a ring-like structure with a projected diameter of 2.2 kpc. The line ratios fall into the regime of HII-regions, although OB-stellar populations cannot be identified by spectral signatures. Nucleus A is a relatively old (7 Gyr or older) and metal-poor super star cluster, most probably the nucleus of the dwarf, now displaced. The star-forming regions B and C show younger and distinctly more metal-rich components. The emission line ratios of regions B and C indicate an almost solar oxygen abundance, if compared with radiation models of HII regions. NGC7796-DW1 occupies a particular role in the group of transition-type galaxies with respect to its origin and current evolutionary state, being the companion of an IE. The dwarf-dwarf merger scenario is excluded because of the missing metal-rich merger component. A viable alternative is gas accretion from a reservoir of cold, metal-rich gas. NGC7796 has to provide this gas within its X-ray bright halo. As illustrated by NGC7796-DW1, cold accretion may be a general solution to the problem of extended star formation histories in transition dwarf galaxies. We present the first dynamical study of the globular cluster system of NGC 4636. This giant elliptical galaxy is claimed to be extremely dark matter dominated, according to X-ray observations. Using the VLT with FORS2/MXU, we obtained velocities for 174 globular clusters. The clusters have projected galactocentric distances in the range 4 to 70 kpc, the overwhelming majority lie within 30 kpc. We find some indication for a rotation of the red (metal-rich) clusters about the minor axis. Out to a radius of 30 kpc, we find a roughly constant projected velocity dispersion for the blue clusters of ~200 km/s. The red clusters exhibit a distinctly different behavior: at a radius of about 13 kpc, the velocity dispersion drops by ~50 km/s to about 170 km/s which then remains constant out to a radius of 30 kpc. Using only the blue clusters as dynamical tracers, we perform Jeans-analyses for different assumptions of the orbital anisotropy. Depending on the anisotropy and the adopted M/L-values, we find that the dark matter fraction within one effective radius can vary between 20% and 50% with most a probable range between 20% and 30%. A main source of uncertainty is the ambiguity of the velocity dispersion in the outermost bin. Although the dark halo mass still cannot be strongly constrained, NGC 4636 does not seem to be extremely dark matter dominated. Context. The present literature does not give a satisfactory answer to the question about the nature of the "Antlia galaxy cluster". Aims. The radial velocities of galaxies found in the region around the giant ellipticals NGC 3258/3268 range from about 1000 km s-1 to 4000 km s-1. We characterise this region and its possible kinematical and population substructure. Methods. We have obtained VLT-VIMOS multi-object spectra of the galaxy population in the inner part of the Antlia cluster and measure radial velocities for 45 potential members. We supplement our galaxy sample with literature data, ending up with 105 galaxy velocities. Results. We find a large radial velocity dispersion for the entire sample as reported in previous papers. However, we find three groups at about 1900 km s-1, 2800 km s-1, and 3700 km s-1, which we interpret as differences in the recession velocities rather than peculiar velocities. Conclusions. The light of the merger remnant NGC 1316 is dominated by old and intermediate-age stars. The only sign of current star formation in this big galaxy is the HII region SH2, an isolated star cluster complex with a ring-like morphology and an estimated age of 0.1 Gyr at a galactocentric distance of about 35 kpc. A nearby intermediate-age globular cluster, surrounded by weak line emission and a few more young star clusters, is kinematically associated. The origin of this complex is enigmatic. The nebular emission lines permit a metallicity determination which can discriminate between a dwarf galaxy or other possible precursors. We used the Integrated Field Unit of the VIMOS instrument at the Very Large Telescope of the European Southern Observatory to study the morphology, kinematics, and metallicity employing line maps, velocity maps, and line diagnostics of a few characteristic spectra. The line ratios of different spectra vary, indicating highly structured HII regions, but define a locus of uniform metallicity. The strong-line diagnostic diagrams and empirical calibrations point to a nearly solar or even super-solar oxygen abundance. The velocity dispersion of the gas is highest in the region offset from the bright clusters. Star formation may be active on a low level. There is evidence for a large-scale disk-like structure in the region of SH2, which would make the similar radial velocity of the nearby globular cluster easier to understand. The high metallicity does not fit to a dwarf galaxy as progenitor. We favour the scenario of a free-floating gaseous complex having its origin in the merger 2 Gyr ago. Over a long period the densities increased secularly until finally the threshold for star formation was reached. Context. There is strong evidence that globular cluster systems (GCSs) of massive galaxies are largely assembled by infall/accretion processes. Therefore, we expect the GCSs of isolated elliptical galaxies to be poor. Although not completely isolated, NGC 7507 is a massive field elliptical galaxy with an apparently very low dark matter content. Aims. We determine the richness, the colour distribution, and the structural properties of the GCS of NGC 7507. Methods. We performed wide-field Washington photometry with data obtained with the MOSAIC II camera at the 4m-Blanco telescope (CTIO, Chile). Results. The GCS is very poor with SN ≈ 0.6. We identify three subpopulations with peaks at (C - T1) colours of 1.21, 1.42, and 1.72. The bluest population may represent the old, metal-poor component. This interpretation is supported by its shallow density profile. The red population is more concentrated, resembling the galaxy light. The intermediate-colour population is strongly peaked in colour, and we interpret this population as the signature of a starburst whose age depends on the metallicity, but should be quite old, since no signatures of a merger are identifiable. In addition, we find a main sequence in the stellar foreground population, which we attribute to the Sagittarius dwarf tidal stream. Conclusions. Globular clusters (GCs) are tracers of the gravitational potential of their host galaxies. Moreover, their kinematic properties may provide clues for understanding the formation of GC systems and their host galaxies. We use the largest set of GC velocities obtained so far of any elliptical galaxy to revise and extend the previous investigations (Richtler et al. 2004) of the dynamics of NGC 1399, the central dominant galaxy of the nearby Fornax cluster of galaxies. The GC velocities are used to study the kinematics, their relation with population properties, and the dark matter halo of NGC 1399. We have obtained 477 new medium-resolution spectra (of these, 292 are spectra from 265 individual GCs, 241 of which are not in the previous data set). with the VLT FORS 2 and Gemini South GMOS multi-object spectrographs. We revise velocities for the old spectra and measure velocities for the new spectra, using the same templates to obtain an homogeneously treated data set. Our entire sample now comprises velocities for almost 700 GCs with projected galactocentric radii between 6 and 100 kpc. In addition, we use velocities of GCs at larger distances published elsewhere. Combining the kinematic data with wide-field photometric Washington data, we study the kinematics of the metal-poor and metal-rich subpopulations. We discuss in detail the velocity dispersions of subsamples and perform spherical Jeans modelling. The most important results are: the red GCs resemble the stellar field population of NGC 1399 in the region of overlap. The blue GCs behave kinematically more erratic. Both subpopulations are kinematically distinct and do not show a smooth transition. It is not possible to find a common dark halo which reproduces simultaneously the properties of both red and blue GCs. Some velocities of blue GCs are only to be explained by orbits with very large apogalactic distances, thus indicating a contamination with GCs which belong to the entire Fornax cluster rather than to NGC 1399. Also, stripped GCs from nearby elliptical galaxies, particularly NGC 1404, may contaminate the blue sample.We argue in favour of a scenario in which the majority of the blue cluster population has been accreted during the assembly of the Fornax cluster. The red cluster population shares the dynamical history of the galaxy itself. Therefore we recommend to use a dark halo based on the red GCs alone.The dark halo which fits best is marginally less massive than the halo quoted previously. The comparison with X-ray analyses is satisfactory in the inner regions, but without showing evidence for a transition from a galaxy to a cluster halo, as suggested by X-ray work., Facultad de Ciencias Astronómicas y Geofísicas

Context: Central galaxies in galaxy clusters may be key discriminants in the competition between the cold dark matter (CDM) paradigm and modified Newtonian dynamics (MOND). Aims: We investigate the dark halo of NGC 1399, the central galaxy of the Fornax cluster, out to a galactocentric distance of 80 kpc. Methods: The data base consists of 656 radial velocities of globular clusters obtained with MXU/VLT and GMOS/Gemini, which is the largest sample so far for any galaxy. We performed a Jeans analysis for a non-rotating isotropic model. Results: An NFW halo with the parameters rs = 50 kpc and gs = 0.0065 M⊙/pc3 provides a good description of our data, fitting well to the X-ray mass. More massive halos are also permitted that agree with the mass of the Fornax cluster as derived from galaxy velocities. We compare this halo with the expected MOND models under isotropy and find that additional dark matter on the order of the stellar mass is needed to get agreement. A fully radial infinite globular cluster system would be needed to change this conclusion. Conclusions: Regarding CDM, we cannot draw firm conclusions. To really constrain a cluster wide halo, more data covering a larger radius are necessary. Aims. We investigate whether the globular clusters (GCs) in the recently published sample of GCs in the Fornax cluster by Bergond and coworkers are indeed intra-cluster objects. Methods. We combine their catalogue of radial velocity measurements with our CTIO MOSAIC photometry in the Washington system and analyse the relation of metal-poor and metal-rich GCs with their host galaxies. Results. The metal-rich GCs appear to be kinematically associated with their respective host galaxies. The vast majority of the metal-poor GCs found in between the galaxies of the Fornax cluster have velocities that are consistent with their being members of the very extended NGC 1399 GC system. We find that when the sample is restricted to the most accurate velocity measurements, the GC velocity dispersion profile can be described with a mass model derived for the NGC 1399 GC system, within 80kpc. We identify one "vagrant" GC whose radial velocity suggests that it is not bound to any galaxy unless its orbit has a very large apogalactic distance., Facultad de Ciencias Astronómicas y Geofísicas

We present first results from an HST/ACS imaging survey of stars and star clusters in five nearby spiral galaxies. This contribution concentrates on NGC 1313, a highly distorted late-type barred spiral. We compare the field star and cluster formation histories in our three ACS pointings for this galaxy. We present a Washington C and Kron-Cousins R photometric study of the globular cluster system of NGC 1399, the central galaxy of the Fornax cluster. A large areal coverage of 1 square degree around NGC 1399 is achieved with three adjoining fields of the MOSAIC II Imager at the CTIO 4-m telescope. Working on such a large field, we can perform the first indicative determination of the total size of the NGC 1399 globular cluster system. The estimated angular extent, measured from the NGC 1399 centre and up to a limiting radius where the areal density of blue globular clusters falls to 30 per cent of the background level, is 45 +/- 5 arcmin, which corresponds to 220 - 275 kpc at the Fornax distance. The bimodal colour distribution of this globular cluster system, as well as the different radial distribution of blue and red clusters, up to these large distances from the parent galaxy, are confirmed. The azimuthal globular cluster distribution exhibits asymmetries that might be understood in terms of tidal stripping of globulars from NGC 1387, a nearby galaxy. The good agreement between the areal density profile of blue clusters and a projected dark-matter NFW density profile is emphasized., 9 pages, 9 figures. Accepted for publication in A&A

During an analysis of optical spectra of 80 young star clusters in several nearby spiral galaxies, [O III] and [N II] emission lines were noted in some cases. Three of these emission line sources are identified as likely planetary nebula (PN) candidates and may represent a rare opportunity to study PNe whose progenitor stars are known to be of intermediate masses. This paper presents and discusses basic properties of the PN candidates and their host clusters. Based on the observed emission line fluxes, the excitation parameters and luminosities of the nebulae are derived. This allows a crude placement of the central stars in two of the objects on the H-R diagram, and their temperatures and luminosities are found to be consistent with post-AGB model tracks for a central star mass of about 0.60 Msun. Host cluster ages and masses are estimated from broad-band colours and by comparison with model SSP spectra. One of the host clusters has an age of 32-65 Myrs, corresponding to a main sequence turn-off mass of M(TO) = 6.6-9.0 Msun. For the other cluster the age is 282-407 Myrs, corresponding to M(TO) = 3.2-3.6 Msun. By estimating the number of stars evolving off the main sequence per year, a total of 6 PNe are expected in our full sample of 80 clusters for aPN lifetime of 10000 years. The factor of two disagreement with the actual observed number may be due, among other things, to uncertainties in PN lifetimes. It is interesting to note that all three PN candidates are associated with clusters which are more diffuse than average. While PNe have previously been found in some old globular clusters, the candidates identified here are among the first identified in young star clusters., Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures. We have investigated a number of globular cluster candidates from a recent wide-field study by Harris et al. (2004a) of the giant elliptical galaxy NGC 5128. We used the Magellan I telescope + MagIC camera under excellent seeing (0.3"-0.6") and obtained very high resolution images for a sample of 44 candidates. Our images allow us to study the light profiles of the likely clusters. This is the first ground-based study of structural parameters for globular clusters outside the Local Group. We compare the psf-deconvolved profiles with King models and derive structural parameters, ellipticities and surface brightnesses. In general, our clusters are similar in size, ellipticity, core radius and central surface brightness to their counterparts in other galaxies, in particular those in NGC 5128 observed with HST by Harris et al. (2002). However, they extend to higher ellipticities and larger half-light radii than their Galactic counterparts. Combining our results with those of Harris et al. fills in the gaps previously existing in $r_h - M_V$ parameter space and indicates that any substantial difference between presumed distinct cluster types in this diagram, including for example the Faint Fuzzies of Larsen & Brodie (2000) and the `extended, luminous' M31 clusters of Huxor et al. (2005) is now removed and that clusters form a continuum in this diagram. Indeed, this continuum now extends to the realm of the Ultra Compact Dwarfs. We have carried out additional analysis to quantify the contamination by background galaxies. This shows that, although galaxies cannot be easily told apart from clusters in some of the structural diagrams, the combination of excellent image quality and Washington photometry should limit the contamination to roughly 10% of the population of cluster candidates., 14 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

We present 8 bright globular clusters and/or objects of less familiar nature which we found in the course of scrutinizing the globular cluster system of NGC 1399. These objects are morphologically striking, either by their sizes or by other structural properties. Some of them may be candidates for stripped dwarf galaxy nuclei, emphasizing the possible role of accretion in the NGC 1399 cluster system. They are all highly interesting targets for further deep spectroscopy or HST-imaging. Since these objects have been found within an area of only 42 arcmin**2, we expect many more still to be detected in a full census of the NGC 1399 cluster system., 6 pages, 3 figures, accepted by A&A (Research Note)

Young star clusters with masses well in excess of 100.000 Msun have been observed not only in merger galaxies and large-scale starbursts, but also in fairly normal, undisturbed spiral and irregular galaxies. Here we present virial mass estimates for a sample of 7 such clusters and show that the derived mass-to-light ratios are consistent with "normal" Kroupa-type stellar mass distributions.

We study the kinematics and dynamics of the globular cluster system of NGC 1399, the brightest elliptical galaxy near the center of the Fornax cluster of galaxies. The observational data consists of medium-resolution spectra, obtained at the Very Large Telescope with FORS2 and the Mask Exchange Unit (MXU). Our sample comprises 468 radial velocities in the magnitude range 20 < mR < 23. This is the largest sample of globular cluster velocities around any galaxy obtained so far. Typical velocity uncertainties are 50 km s-1, significantly improving on earlier samples. The radial range is 2′ < r < 9′, corresponding to 11 kpc to 50 kpc of galactocentric distance. The shape of the velocity distribution of the sample is compatible with being a Gaussian distribution. However, under moderate error selection, a slight asymmetry is visible between high and low radial velocities. We find bright clusters with radial velocities below 800 km s-1, while they are not found at the corresponding high-velocity side above 2000 km s-1. There is the possibility that unbound clusters and/or objects in the foreground contaminate the NGC 1399 cluster sample. Under strong error selection, practically no objects are found with velocities lower than 800 km s-1 or higher than 2000 km s-1. Since the extreme velocities influence the velocity dispersion considerably, uncertainty regarding the exact value of the dispersion remains. With the above velocity limits, we derive a projected velocity dispersion for the total sample of 274 ± 9 km s-1 which within the uncertainties remains constant over the entire radial range. Without any velocity restriction, it increases to 325 km s-1. Guided by the bimodal color distribution of clusters, we distinguish between red clusters (C-R > 1.6) and blue clusters (C-R < 1.6), and find velocity dispersions for these groups of 255 ± 13 and 291 ± 14 km s-1, respectively, again radially constant. Any possible rotation of either of these cluster populations is below the detection limit, with the exception of a weak signature of rotation for the blue clusters more distant than 6′. Spherical models point to a circular velocity of 419 ± 30 km s-1, assuming isotropy for the red clusters. This value is constant out to 40 kpc. The inferred dark halo potential can be well represented by a logarithmic potential. A halo of the NFW type also provides a good fit to the observations. The orbital structure of the clusters can only be weakly constrained. It is consistent with isotropy for the red clusters and a slight tangential bias for the blue clusters. Some mass profiles derived from X-ray analyses do not agree with a constant circular velocity within our radial range, irrespective of its exact value. Interpreting the extreme low radial velocities as space velocities of bound clusters near their pericentric distances would require an extension of the cluster system of at least 200 kpc. Radial velocities of 468 globular clusters around NGC 1399, the central galaxy in the Fornax cluster, have been obtained with FORS2 and the Mask Exchange Unit (MXU) at the ESO Very Large Telescope. This is the largest sample of globular cluster velocities around any galaxy obtained so far. The mean velocity uncertainty is 50 km s-1. This data sample is accurate and large enough to be used in studies of the mass distribution of NGC 1399 and the properties of its globular cluster system. Here we describe the observations and the reduction procedure, and we discuss the uncertainties of the resulting velocities. The complete sample of cluster velocities that is used in a dynamical study of NGC 1399 is tabulated. We have studied the Globular Cluster System of the merger galaxy NGC 1316 in Fornax, using CCD BVI photometry. A clear bimodality is not detected from the broadband colours. However, dividing the sample into red (presumably metal- rich) and blue (metal-poor) subpopulations at B-I=1.75, we find that they follow strikingly different angular distributions. The red clusters show a strong correlation with the galaxy elongation, but the blue ones are circularly distributed. No systematic difference is seen in their radial profile and both are equally concentrated. We derive an astonishingly low Specific Frequency for NGC 1316 of only Sn=0.9, which confirms with a larger field a previous finding by Grillmair et al. (1999). Assuming a "normal" Sn of ~4 for early-type galaxies, we use stellar population synthesis models to estimate in 2 Gyr the age of this galaxy, if an intermediate-age population were to explain the low Sn we observe. This value agrees with the luminosity-weighted mean age of NGC 1316 derived by Kuntschner & Davies (1998) and Mackie & Fabbiano (1998). By fitting t5 functions to the Globular Cluster Luminosity Function (GCLF), we derived the following turnover magnitudes: B=24.69 +/- 0.15, V=23.87 +/- 0.20 and I=22.72 +/- 0.14. They confirm that NGC 1316, in spite of its outlying location, is at the same distance as the core of the Fornax cluster., 16 pages, 22 Postscript figures. We present a distance to NGC 4527, the host galaxy of the type Ia SN 1991T, measured by surface brightness fluctuations. This supernova has been labelled ``peculiar'' both on the grounds of its spectroscopic behaviour and its apparent overluminosity with respect to other supernovae. The distance modulus to NGC 4527 and thus to SN 1991T is 30.26+-0.09.
