We report the discovery of a new example of the rare class of highly magnetized, rapidly rotating, helium enhanced, early B stars that produce anomalously wide hydrogen emission due to a centrifugal magnetosphere (CM). The star is Trumpler 16-26, a B1.5 V member of the Trumpler 16 open cluster. A CM was initially suspected based on hydrogen Brackett series emission observed in SDSS/APOGEE H-band spectra. Similar to the other stars of this type, the emission was highly variable and at all times remarkable due to the extreme velocity separations of the double peaks (up to 1300 km s−1.) Another clue lay in the TESS light curve, which shows two irregular eclipses per cycle when phased with the likely 0.971 8115-d rotation period, similar to the behaviour of the well-known CM host star σ Ori E. To confirm a strong magnetic field and rotation-phase-locked variability, we initiated a follow-up campaign consisting of optical spectropolarimetry and spectroscopy. The associated data revealed a longitudinal magnetic field varying between −3.1 and +1.6 kG with the period found from photometry. The optical spectra confirmed rapid rotation (v sin i = 195 km s−1), surface helium enhancement, and wide, variable hydrogen emission. Tr16-26 is thus confirmed as the 20th known, the fourth most rapidly rotating, and the faintest CM host star yet discovered. With a projected dipole magnetic field strength of Bd > 11 kG, Tr16-26 is also among the most magnetic CM stars.

Because many classical Be stars may owe their nature to mass and angular-momentum transfer in a close binary, the present masses, temperatures, and radii of their components are of high interest for comparison to stellar evolution models. Kappa Dra is a 61.5-day single-lined binary with a B6 IIIe primary. With the CHARA Array instruments MIRC/MIRC-X and MYSTIC, we detected the secondary at (approximately photospheric) flux ratios of 1.49 +- 0.10% and 1.63 +- 0.09% in the H and K band, respectively. From a large and diverse optical spectroscopic database only the radial velocity curve of the Be star could be extracted. However, employing the parallaxes from Hipparcos and Gaia, which agree within their nominal 1-sigma errors, we could derive the total mass and found component masses of 3.65 +- 0.48 Msun and 0.426 +- 0.043 Msun for the Be star and the companion, respectively. Previous cross-correlation of the observed far-UV spectrum with sdO spectral model templates had not detected a companion belonging to the hot O-type subdwarf (sdO) population known from ~20 earlier-type Be stars. Guided by our full 3D orbital solution, we found a strong cross-correlation signal for a stripped subdwarf B-type companion (far-UV flux ratio of 2.3 +- 0.5%), enabling the first firm characterization of such a star, and making kappa Dra the first mid- to late-type Be star with a directly-observed subdwarf companion., Comment: Accepted to ApJ. Time series of spectroscopic, speckle-interferometric, and optical long-baseline-interferometric observations confirm that $\nu$ Gem is a hierarchical triple system. It consists of an inner binary composed of two B-type stars and an outer classical Be star. Several photospheric spectral lines of the inner components were disentangled, revealing two stars with very different rotational broadening ($\sim$260 and $\sim$140 kms$^{-1}$, respectively), while the photospheric lines of the Be star remain undetected. From the combined spectroscopic and astrometric orbital solution it is not possible to unambiguously cross-identify the inner astrometric components with the spectroscopic components. In the preferred solution based on modeling of the disentangled line profiles, the inner binary is composed of two stars with nearly identical masses of 3.3 M$_\odot$ and the more rapidly rotating star is the fainter one. These two stars are in a marginally elliptical orbit ($e$ = 0.06) about each other with a period of 53.8 d. The third star also has a mass of 3.3 M$_\odot$ and follows a more eccentric ($e$ = 0.24) orbit with a period of 19.1 yr. The two orbits are co-directional and, at inclinations of 79$^{\circ}$ and 76$^{\circ}$ of the inner and the outer orbit, respectively, about coplanar. No astrometric or spectroscopic evidence could be found that the Be star itself is double. The system appears dynamically stable and not subject to eccentric Lidov-Kozai oscillations. After disentangling, the spectra of the components of the inner binary do not exhibit peculiarities that would be indicative of past interactions. In photometry of $\gamma$ Cas (B0.5 IVe) from the SMEI and BRITE-Constellation satellites, indications of low-order non-radial pulsation have recently been found, which would establish an important commonality with the class of classical Be stars at large. New photometry with the TESS satellite has detected three frequency groups near 1.0 ($g1$), 2.4 ($g2$), and 5.1 ($g3$) d$^{-1}$, respectively. Some individual frequencies are nearly harmonics or combination frequencies but not exactly so. Frequency groups are known from roughly three quarters of all classical Be stars and also from pulsations of $\beta$ Cep, SPB, and $\gamma$ Dor stars and, therefore, firmly establish $\gamma$ Cas as a non-radial pulsator. The total power in each frequency group is variable. An isolated feature exists at 7.57 d$^{-1}$ and, together with the strongest peaks in the second and third groups ordered by increasing frequency ($g2$ and $g3$), is the only one detected in all three TESS sectors. The former long-term 0.82 d$^{-1}$ variability would fall into $g1$ and has not returned at a significant level, questioning its attribution to rotational modulation. Low-frequency stochastic variability is a dominant feature of the TESS light curve, possibly caused by internal gravity waves excited at the core-envelope interface. These are known to be efficient at transporting angular momentum outward, and may also drive the oscillations that constitute $g1$ and $g2$. The hard X-ray flux of $\gamma$ Cas is the only remaining major property that distinguishes this star from the class of classical Be stars., Comment: 19 pages, 11 figures. To be published in MNRAS

The observed emission lines of Be stars originate from a circumstellar Keplerian disk that are generally well explained by the Viscous Decretion Disk model. In an earlier work we performed the modeling of the full light curve of the bright Be star $\omega$ CMa (Ghoreyshi et al. 2018) with the 1-D time-dependent hydrodynamics code SINGLEBE and the Monte Carlo radiative-transfer code HDUST. We used the V -band light curve that probes the inner disk through four disk formation and dissipation cycles. This new study compares predictions of the same set of model parameters with time-resolved photometry from the near UV through the mid-infrared, comprehensive series of optical spectra, and optical broad-band polarimetry, that overall represent a larger volume of the disk. Qualitatively, the models reproduce the trends in the observed data due to the growth and decay of the disk. However, quantitative differences exist, e.g., an overprediction of the flux increasing with wavelength, too slow decreases in Balmer emission-line strength that are too slow during disk dissipation, and the discrepancy between the range of polarimetric data and the model. We find that a larger value of the viscosity parameter alone, or a truncated disk by a companion star, reduces these discrepancies by increasing the dissipation rate in the outer regions of the disk., Comment: 25 pages, 19 figures

Following the arrival of MATISSE, the second-generation of VLTI instrumentation is now complete and was simultaneously enhanced by a major facility upgrade including the NAOMI Adaptive Optics on the Auxiliary Telescopes. On the Unit Telescopes, significant efforts were also made to improve the injection stability into VLTI instruments. On top of GRAVITY's own evolution, its fringe tracker is now being used to allow coherent integrations on MATISSE (the so-called GRA4MAT project). Meanwhile, operations also evolved to be more flexible and make the most of an extended observing parameter space. In this context, we present an overview of the current VLTI performances. Finally, we will report on on-going improvements such as the extension of the longest baselines.

Rapidly rotating B-type stars with gaseous mass-loss disks in Keplerian rotation are common central objects in X-Ray binaries. These disks are physically well understood in the framework of the viscous decretion disk, and their typical parameters have been established for a large number of single Be stars in the recent years. According to the current observational evidence, the Be stars and disks found in BeXRBs are well within the boundaries known from single Be stars, i.e., they are normal Be stars. New results have also been obtained on the orbital disk truncation and other tidal effects of the companion objects on the disk.

The tidal interaction of a Be star with a binary companion forms two spiral arms that cause orbital modulation of the Be disc structure. The aim of this work is to identify observables in which this modulation is apparent. The structure of a Be disc in a coplanar circular binary system is computed with a smoothed-particle hydrodynamics code, and a radiation transfer code calculates the spectral energy distribution. Line depolarisation was confirmed, with polarisation profiles nearly reverse to emission-line profiles. The continuum flux maximizes for pole-on discs, but photometric variability maximizes for edge-on discs. The linear polarisation exhibits one or two maxima per orbital cycle. While polarisation variability in visible passbands is important only at low inclinations, infrared bands may demonstrate high orbital variability even at large inclinations. More evident is the modulation in the polarisation angle (PA) for low inclinations. The latter can be used to track azimuthal asymmetries for pole-on discs, where the spectroscopic variability in the violet-to-red (V/R) emission-component ratio disappears. PA reversals coincide with phases where V/R=1, tracking lines of sight directed towards regions where the approaching and receding arms overlap. Continuum flux and polarisation are mostly in phase for neighbouring wavelength regions. It is suggested that studies of non-symmetric discs distorted by tidal forces from a secondary star may be used to study disc variabilities of other origins., Comment: 20 pages, 19 figures; accepted for publication in MNRAS

We find that the emission-line object OGLEJ005039.05-725751.4, a member of the cluster OGLE-CL SMC 64, exhibits a peculiar light curve pattern repeating with a recurrence time of 141.45 days. The light curve resembles periodic outbursts with a duty cycle of 20%. A second long cycle of 2500 days is also detected in the photometric data set. Two X-SHOOTER spectra obtained at minimum and maximum reveal a Be star dominating at minimum light resembling the Classical Be star 48 Lib. The larger Hα emission, the stronger Na D absorption and the appearance of emission in the infrared Ca II triplet at maximum, might indicate periodic mass transfer in a complex binary system., Facultad de Ciencias Astronómicas y Geofísicas, Instituto de Astrofísica de La Plata

The near-infrared GRAVITY instrument has become a fully operational spectro-imager, while expanding its capability to support astrometry of the key Galactic Centre science. The mid-infrared MATISSE instrument has just arrived on Paranal and is starting its commissioning phase. NAOMI, the new adaptive optics for the Auxiliary Telescopes, is about to leave Europe for an installation in the fall of 2018. Meanwhile, the interferometer infrastructure has continuously improved in performance, in term of transmission and vibrations, when used with both the Unit Telescopes and Auxiliary Telescopes. These are the highlights of the last two years of the VLTI 2nd generation upgrade started in 2015.

MATISSE is the 2 nd generation mid-infrared instrument designed to combine four VLTI telescopes in the L, M and N spectral bands. It’s commissioning in Paranal is in progress since March 2018 and should continue until the middle of 2019. Here we report, in June 2018, the commissioning plan, tools and the preliminary results of the first two commissioning runs in MATISSE that show that the instrument is already fully operational with a sensitivity well beyond its specification. The quality of the measurements, as they obtained by the current observing procedures and delivered by the current pipeline are already good enough for a broad range of science observations. However, our results remain quite preliminary and they will be quite substantially improved by the work in progress in instrument calibration, observing procedures optimization and data processing updates.

Be stars are main-sequence massive stars with emission features in their spectrum, which originates in circumstellar gaseous discs. Even though the viscous decretion disc (VDD) model can satisfactorily explain most observations, two important physical ingredients, namely the magnitude of the viscosity ($\alpha$) and the disk mass injection rate, remain poorly constrained. The light curves of Be stars that undergo events of disc formation and dissipation offer an opportunity to constrain these quantities. A pipeline was developed to model these events that uses a grid of synthetic light curves, computed from coupled hydrodynamic and radiative transfer calculations. A sample of 54 Be stars from the OGLE survey of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) was selected for this study. Because of the way our sample was selected (bright stars with clear disc events), it likely represents the densest discs in the SMC. Like their siblings in the Galaxy, the mass of the disc in the SMC increases with the stellar mass. The typical mass and angular momentum loss rates associated with the disk events are of the order of $\sim$$10^{-10}\, M_\odot\,\mathrm{yr^{-1}}$ and $\sim$$5\times 10^{36}\, \mathrm{g\, cm^{2}\, s^{-2}}$, respectively. The values of $\alpha$ found in this work are typically of a few tenths, consistent with recent results in the literature and with the ones found in dwarf novae, but larger than current theory predicts. Considering the sample as a whole, the viscosity parameter is roughly two times larger at build-up ($\left\langle\alpha_\mathrm{bu}\right\rangle = 0.63$) than at dissipation ($\left\langle\alpha_\mathrm{d}\right\rangle = 0.26$). Further work is necessary to verify whether this trend is real or a result of some of the model assumptions.

The first results of radiative transfer calculations on decretion discs of binary Be stars are presented. A smoothed particle hydrodynamics code computes the structure of Be discs in coplanar circular binary systems for a range of orbital and disc parameters. The resulting disc configuration consists of two spiral arms, and can be given as input into a Monte Carlo code, which calculates the radiative transfer along the line of sight for various observational coordinates. Making use of the property of steady disc structure in coplanar circular binaries, observables are computed as functions of the orbital phase. Orbital-phase series of line profiles are given for selected parameter sets under various viewing angles, to allow comparison with observations. Flat-topped profiles with and without superimposed multiple structures are reproduced, showing, for example, that triple-peaked profiles do not have to be necessarily associated with warped discs and misaligned binaries. It is demonstrated that binary tidal effects give rise to phase-locked variability of the violet-to-red (V/R) ratio of hydrogen emission lines. The V/R ratio exhibits two maxima per cycle; in certain cases those maxima are equal, leading to a clear new V/R cycle every half orbital period. Context. Be stars are physically complex systems that continue to challenge theory to understand their rapid rotation, complex variability and decretion disks. $\gamma$ Cassiopeiae ($\gamma$ Cas) is one such star but is even more curious because of its unexplained hard thermal X-ray emission. Aims. We aim to examine the optical variability of $\gamma$ Cas and thereby to shed more light on its puzzling behaviour. Methods. Three hundred twenty-one archival H$\alpha$ spectra from 2006 to 2017 are analysed to search for frequencies corresponding to the 203.5 day orbit of the companion. Space photometry from the SMEI satellite from 2003 to 2011 and the BRITE-Constellation of nano-satellites between 2015 and 2019 is investigated in the period range from a couple of hours to a few days. Results. The orbital period of the companion of 203.5 days is confirmed with independent measurements from the structure of the H$\alpha$ line emission. A strong blue/red asymmetry in the amplitude distribution across the H$\alpha$ emission line could hint at a spiral structure in the decretion disk. With the space photometry, the known frequency of 0.82 d$^{-1}$ is confirmed in data from the early 2000s. A higher frequency of 2.48 d$^{-1}$ is present in the data from 2015 to 2019 and possibly also in the early 2000s. A third frequency at 1.25 d$^{-1}$ is proposed to exist in both SMEI and BRITE data. The only explanation covering all three rapid variations seems to be nonradial pulsation. The two higher frequencies are incompatible with rotation., Comment: 13 pages, 12 figures. Context. The structure of the inner parts of Be star disks (20 stellar radii) is well explained by the viscous decretion disk (VDD) model, which is able to reproduce the observable properties of most of the objects studied so far. The outer parts, on the ther hand, are not observationally well-explored, as they are observable only at radio wavelengths. A steepening of the spectral slope somewhere between infrared and radio wavelengths was reported for several Be stars that were previously detected in the radio, but a convincing physical explanation for this trend has not yet been provided. Aims. We test the VDD model predictions for the extended parts of a sample of six Be disks that have been observed in the radio to address the question of whether the observed turndown in the spectral energy distribution (SED) can be explained in the framework of the VDD model, including recent theoretical development for truncated Be disks in binary systems. Methods. We combine new multi-wavelength radio observations from the Karl. G. Jansky Very Large Array (JVLA) and Atacama Pathfinder Experiment (APEX) with previously published radio data and archival SED measurements at ultraviolet, visual, and infrared wavelengths. The density structure of the disks, including their outer parts, is constrained by radiative transfer modeling of the observed spectrum using VDD model predictions. In the VDD model we include the presumed effects of possible tidal influence from faint binary companions. Results. For 5 out of 6 studied stars, the observed SED shows strong signs of SED turndown between far-IR and radio wavelengths. A VDD model that extends to large distances closely reproduces the observed SEDs up to far IR wavelengths, but fails to reproduce the radio SED. ... Context: [abbreviated] Aims: Kepler data of three known Be stars are re-visited to establish their pulsational nature and assess the properties of additional, non-pulsational variations. The three program stars turned out to be one inactive Be star, one active, continuously outbursting Be star, and one Be star transiting from a non-outbursting into an outbursting phase, thus forming an excellent sample to distill properties of Be stars in the various phases of their life-cycle. Methods: [abbreviated] Results: The short-term photometric variability of Be stars must be disentangled into a stellar and a circumstellar part. The stellar part is on the whole not different from what is seen in non-Be stars. However, some of the observed phenomena might be to be due to resonant mode coupling, a mechanism not typically considered for B-type stars. Short-term circumstellar variability comes in the form of either a group of relatively well-defined, short-lived frequencies during outbursts, which are called \v{S}tefl frequencies, and broad bumps in the power spectra, indicating aperiodic variability on a time scale similar to typical low-order $g$-mode pulsation frequencies, rather than true periodicity. Conclusions: From a stellar pulsation perspective, Be stars are rapidly rotating SPB stars, that is they pulsate in low order $g$-modes, even if the rapid rotation can project the observed frequencies into the traditional high-order $p$-mode regime above about 4 c/d. However, when a circumstellar disk is present, Be star power spectra are complicated by both cyclic, or periodic, and aperiodic circumstellar phenomena, possibly even dominating the power spectrum., Comment: Accepted by Astronomy and Astrophysics

ESO is undertaking a large upgrade of the infrastructure on Cerro Paranal in order to integrate the 2nd generation of interferometric instruments Gravity and MATISSE, and increase its performance. This upgrade started mid 2014 with the construction of a service station for the Auxiliary Telescopes and will end with the implementation of the adaptive optics system for the Auxiliary telescope (NAOMI) in 2018. This upgrade has an impact on the infrastructure of the VLTI, as well as its sub-systems and scientific instruments.

X-ray surveys of the Carina nebula have revealed a few hard and luminous sources associated with early-type stars. Such unusual characteristics for the high-energy emission may be related to magnetically-confined winds. To search for the presence of magnetic fields in these objects, we performed a limited spectropolarimetric survey using the FORS instrument. The multi-object mode was used, so that a total of 21 OB stars could be investigated during a one-night-long run. A magnetic field was detected in two objects of the sample, with a 6 sigma significance; Tr16-22 and 13. Such a detection was expected for Tr16-22, as its X-ray emission is too bright, variable and hard, compared to other late-type O or O+OB systems. It is more surprising for Tr16-13, a poorly known star which so far has never shown any peculiar characteristics. Subsequent monitoring is now needed to ascertain the physical properties of these objects and enable a full modelling of their magnetic atmospheres and winds.

Prompted by peculiar spectroscopic variability observed in SDSS/APOGEE $H$-band spectra, we monitored the Be star HD 55606 using optical spectroscopy and found that it is an exotic double-lined spectroscopic binary (SB2) consisting of a Be star and a hot, compact companion that is probably an OB subdwarf (sdOB) star. Motion of the sdOB star is traced by its impact on the strong He~I lines, observed as radial velocity ($V_{r}$) variable, double-peaked emission profiles with narrow central absorption cores. Weak He II 4686 {\AA} absorption associated with the companion star is detected in most spectra. Use of the emission peaks of low-ionization emission lines to trace the Be star $V_{r}$ and the He I lines to trace the companion star $V_{r}$ yields a circular orbital solution with a 93.8-day period and masses of $M_{\rm Be}=6.2$ $M_{\rm \odot}$ and $M_{\rm sdOB}=0.9$ $M_{\rm \odot}$ in the case of $i=80^{\circ}$. HD 55606 exhibits a variety of phase-locked variability, including the development of shell lines twice per orbit. The shell phases coincide with variation in the double emission peak separations, and both forms of variability are likely caused by a two-armed spiral density perturbation in the Be disk. The intensity ratios of the double emission peaks are also phase-locked, possibly indicating heating by the sdOB star of the side of the Be disk facing it. HD 55606 is a new member of the growing sample of Be+sdOB binaries, in which the Be star's rapid rotation and ability to form a disk can be attributed to past mass transfer.

Among the emission-line stars, the classical Be stars known for their extreme properties are remarkable. The Be stars are B-type main sequence stars that have displayed at least once in their life emission lines in their spectrum. Beyond this phenomenological approach some progresses were made on the understanding of this class of stars. With high-technology techniques (interferometry, adaptive optics, multi-objects spectroscopy, spectropolarimetry, high-resolution photometry, etc) from different instruments and space mission such as the VLTI, CHARA, FLAMES, ESPADONS-NARVAL, COROT, MOST, SPITZER, etc, some discoveries were performed allowing to constrain the modeling of the Be stars stellar evolution but also their circumstellar decretion disks. In particular, the confrontation between theory and observations about the effects of the stellar formation and evolution on the main sequence, the metallicity, the magnetic fields, the stellar pulsations, the rotational velocity, and the binarity (including the X-rays binaries) on the Be phenomenon appearance is discussed. The disks observations and the efforts made on their modeling is mentioned. As the life of a star does not finish at the end of the main sequence, we also mention their stellar evolution post main sequence including the gamma-ray bursts. Finally, the different new results and remaining questions about the main physical properties of the Be stars are summarized and possible ways of investigations proposed. The recent and future facilities (XSHOOTER, ALMA, E-ELT, TMT, GMT, JWST, GAIA, etc) and their instruments that may help to improve the knowledge of Be stars are also briefly introduced.

Identifying seven activities and activity-carrying properties and nine classes of Active OB Stars, the OB Star Activity Matrix is constructed to map the parameter space. On its basis, the occurrence and appearance of the main activities are described as a function of stellar class. Attention is also paid to selected combinations of activities with classes of Active OB Stars. Current issues are identified and suggestions are developed for future work and strategies.

Doppler imaging of early-type magnetic stars is the most advanced method to interpret their line profile variations. DI allows us to study directly a complex interplay between chemical spots, magnetic fields, and the mass loss. Here we outline the general principles of the surface mapping of stars, discuss adaption of this technique to early-type stars and present several recent examples of the abundance and magnetic mapping performed for rapidly rotating early-B stars. In particular, we present the first Doppler images for the very fast rotating He-rich star HR 7355 and a reconstruction of magnetic field for the well-known Bp star σ Ori E. We also present new magnetic maps for the He-strong star HD 37776, which possesses one of the most complex magnetic field topologies among the upper main sequence stars.

We summarize the discussion held after the session on periodic variations and asteroseismology. The session not only included seven talks, but as well thirty excellent posters were shown. It was impossible to summarize all these in the available frame of a discussion, and so this work focuses on very few sub-topics only mentioned in the actual discussion session. These topics were the relation of pulsation and turbulence, pulsation in close binaries, the observed photometric variability, the connection of pulsations and outburst, and bipolar flows.

Context. Luminous blue variables (LBVs) are rare massive stars with very high luminosity. They are characterized by strong photo-metric and spectroscopic variability related to transient eruptions. The mechanisms at the origin of these eruptions is not well known. In addition, their formation is still problematic and the presence of a companion could help to explain how they form. Aims. This article presents a study of seven LBVs (about 20% of the known Galactic population), some Wolf-Rayet stars, and massive binaries. We probe the environments that surround these massive stars with near-, mid-, and far-infrared images, investigating potential nebula/shells and the companion stars. Methods. To investigate large spatial scales, we used seeing-limited and near diffraction-limited adaptive optics images to obtain a differential diagnostic on the presence of circumstellar matter and to determine their extent. From those images, we also looked for the presence of binary companions on a wide orbit. Once a companion was detected, its gravitational binding to the central star was tested. Tests include the chance projection probability, the proper motion estimates with multi-epoch observations, flux ratio, and star separations. Results. We find that two out of seven of LBVs may have a wide orbit companion. Most of the LBVs display a large circumstellar envelope or several shells. In particular, HD168625, known for its rings, possesses several shells with possibly a large cold shell at the edge of which the rings are formed. Be stars are surrounded by outflowing circumstellar matter structured in the form of decretion discs. They are often members of binary systems, where it is expected that the decretion disc interacts both radiatively and gravitationally with the companion. In this work we study how various orbital (period, mass ratio and eccentricity) and disc (viscosity) parameters affect the disc structure in coplanar systems. We simulate such binaries with the use of a smoothed particle hydrodynamics code. The main effects of the secondary on the disc are its truncation and the accumulation of material inwards of truncation. We find two cases with respect to the effects of eccentricity: (i) In circular or nearly circular prograde orbits, the disc maintains a rotating, constant in shape, configuration, which is locked to the orbital phase. The disc is smaller in size, more elongated and more massive for low viscosity parameter, small orbital separation and/or high mass ratio. (ii) Highly eccentric orbits are more complex, with the disc structure and total mass strongly dependent on the orbital phase and the distance to the secondary. We also study the effects of binarity in the disc continuum emission. Since the infrared and radio SED are sensitive to the disc size and density slope, the truncation and matter accumulation result in considerable modifications in the emergent spectrum. We conclude that binarity can serve as an explanation for the variability exhibited in observations of Be stars, and that our model can be used to detect invisible companions., Comment: 15 pages, 30 figures

Recent results for classical Be stars are reviewed and links to general astrophysics are presented. Classical Be stars are B-type stars close to the main sequence that exhibit line emission over the photospheric spectrum. The excess is attributed to a circumstellar gaseous component that is commonly accepted to be in the form of an equatorial disk. Since 1988, when the last such review was published, major progress has been made. The geometry and kinematics of the circumstellar environment can be best explained by a rotationally supported relatively thin disk with very little outflow, consistent with interferometric observations. The presence of short-term periodic variability is restricted to the earlier type Be stars. This variation for at least some of these objects has been shown to be due to nonradial pulsation. For at least one star, evidence for a magnetic field has been observed. The mechanisms responsible for the production and dynamics of the circumstellar gas are still not constrained. Observations of nonradial pulsation beating phenomena connected to outbursts point toward a relevance of pulsation, but this mechanism cannot be generalized. Either the evidence that Be stars do not form a homogeneous group with respect to disk formation is growing or the short-term periodic variability is less important than previously thought. The statistics of Be stars investigated in open clusters of the Milky Way and the Magellanic Clouds has reopened the question of the evolutionary status of Be stars. The central B star is a fast rotator, although theoretical developments have revived the question of how high rotational rates are, so the commonly quoted mean value of about 70%-80% of the critical velocity may just be a lower limit. Be stars are in a unique position to make contributions to several important branches of stellar physics, e.g., asymmetric mass-loss processes, stellar angular momentum distribution evolution, astroseismology, and magnetic field evolution.

We have spectroscopically monitored the galactic Luminous Blue Variable HD 160529 and obtained an extensive high-resolution data set that covers the years 1991 to 2002. During this period, the star evolved from an extended photometric minimum phase towards a new visual maximum. In several observing seasons, we covered up to four months with almost daily spectra. Our spectra typically cover most of the visual spectral range with a high spectral resolution (about 20,000 or more). This allows us to investigate the variability in many lines and on many time scales from days to years. We find a correlation between the photospheric HeI lines and the brightness of the star, both on a time scale of months and on a time scale of years. The short-term variations are smaller and do not follow the long-term trend, strongly suggesting different physical mechanisms. Metal lines also show both short-term and long-term variations in strength and also a long-term trend in radial velocity. Most of the line-profile variations can be attributed to changing strengths of lines. Propagating features in the line profiles are rarely observed. This paper presents the recent changes undergone by the Science Operations department of the ESO Paranal Observatory. This revised science operations model, named SciOps2, aims at improving operations efficiency and quality of the data delivered to our community of users. The changes regarding the new department structure, its staffing, and the distribution of tasks and responsibilities, are described in details, as well as the measured impact of these changes.

Here we present the results of the 6th biennial optical interferometry imaging beauty contest. Taking advantage of a unique opportunity, the red supergiant VY CMa and the Mira variable R Car were observed in the astronomical H-band with three 4-telescope configurations of the VLTI-AT array using the PIONIER instrument. The community was invited to participate in the subsequent image reconstruction and interpretation phases of the project. Ten groups submitted entries to the beauty contest, and we found reasonable consistency between images obtained from independent workers using quite different algorithms. We also found that significant differences existed between the submitted images, much greater than in past beauty contests that were all based on simulated data. A novel crowd-sourcing" method allowed consensus median images to be constructed, filtering likely artifacts and retaining real features." We definitively detect strong spots on the surfaces of both stars as well as distinct circumstellar shells of emission (likely water/CO) around R Car. In a close contest, Joel Sanchez (IAA-CSIC/Spain) was named the winner of the 2014 interferometric imaging beauty contest. This process has shown that new comers" can use publicly-available imaging software to interpret VLTI/PIONIER imaging data, as long as sufficient observations are taken to have complete uv coverage { a luxury that is often missing. We urge proposers to request adequate observing nights to collect sufficient data for imaging and for time allocation committees to recognise the importance of uv coverage for reliable interpretation of interferometric data. We believe that the result of the proposed broad international project will contribute to inspiring trust in the image reconstruction processes in optical interferometry.

Optical and IR spectra, optical to sub-mm photometry, visual imaging polarimetry, and IR high-resolution spectro-interferometry are being used to monitor the new outburst of 28 CMa, which started in 2008 and so far closely resembles previous ones. First modeling based on viscous decretion and focused on constraining the disk viscosity parameter, α, is presented.

We observed a sample of several southern Be stars from 1995 to 1997 typically for several months in each season using our spectrograph HEROS. One of these stars, μ Cen, was found to be in the process of continued gradual recovery of the Hydrogen emitting disk which had been lost from 1977-1989. During the monitoring period numerous line emission outbursts were observed. A generalized pattern of an outburst cycle is derived from observations of different circumstellar lines at times of various levels of emission from the disk. Relative quiescence in which mostly periodic varaibiltiy is seen, rapid decreases of emission (precursor), outburst, and subsequent relaxation can be distinguished as the main constituing phases, even though there are distinct differences between different groups of spectral lines. Based on this empirical phenomenology, a schematic picture of the associated ejection of matter into a near-stellar orbit is sketched and similarities between μ Cen and other stars will be outlined.

Early-B hypergiants belong to the most luminous stars in the Universe. They are characterized by high mass-loss rates (Ṁ ≈ 10−5Mʘyr−1) and low terminal wind velocities (v∞ʘ400 kms−1) implying very dense winds. They represent a short-lived evolutionary phase and are of particular interest for evolutionary theories of massive stars with mass loss. Due to their high luminosity they play a key role in connection with the “wind momentum - luminosity relation”. Among the main interesting characteristics of early-B hypergiants are the various kinds of photometric and spectroscopic variations. In several recent campaigns our group has performed extensive high dispersion spectroscopy of galactic early-B hypergiants with our fiber-fed echelle spectrograph FLASH/HEROS at the ESO-50 cm telescope. The main outcome was that their dense winds behave hydrodynamically differently to the less luminous supergiants of comparable spectral type. Outwardly accelerated propagating discrete absorption components of the P Cyg-type lines are the typical features rather than rotationally modulated line profile variations. These discrete absorptions could be traced in different spectral lines from photospheric velocities up to 75% of the terminal velocity. The stellar absorption lines show a pulsation-like radial velocity variability pattern lasting up to two weeks as the typical time scale. The radius variations connected with this pulsation-like motions are correlated with the emission height of the P Cyg-type profiles.

The meeting of the Working Group on Active B-type Stars consisted of a business meeting followed by a scientific meeting containing invited and contributed talks. The titles of the talks and their presenters are listed below. We plan to publish a series of articles containing summaries of these talks in Issue No. 39 of the Be Star Newsletter.

We present the latest update of the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope interferometer (VLTI). The operations of VLTI have greatly improved in the past years: reduction of the execution time; better offering of telescopes configurations; improvements on AMBER limiting magnitudes; study of polarization effects and control for single mode fibres; fringe tracking real time data, etc. We present some of these improvements and also quantify the operational improvements using a performance metric. We take the opportunity of the first decade of operations to reflect on the VLTI community which is analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. Be stars exhibit variability for a great number of observables. Putting the pieces together of the disk dynamics is not an easy task and requires arduous modeling before achieving a good fit of the observational data. In order to guide the modeling process and make it more efficient, it is very instructive to investigate reference dynamical cases. This paper focuses on continuum polarimetric quantities and is the second of a series that aims to demonstrate the capacity of deriving the dynamical history and fundamental parameters of a classical Be star through the follow-up of various observables. After a detailed study of the different opacities at play in the formation of polarized spectra, we investigate predictions of polarimetric observables in the continuum for different dynamical scenarios. Our models are based on a coupling of a hydrodynamic viscous decretion simulations in a disk and a 3-D non-LTE radiative transfer code. Introducing the polarization color diagram (PCD), we show that certain combinations of polarimetric observables exhibit features that are characteristic of a mass loss history. This diagram also enables to estimate fundamental parameters such as the inclination angle, the disk density scale and the $\alpha$ viscous diffusion parameter. We present the PCD as a powerful diagnosis tool to track the dynamical phases of a Be star such as disk building-up, dissipation, periodic and episodic outbursts. In the past decade, a consensus has emerged regarding the nature of classical Be stars: They are very rapidly rotating main sequence B stars, which, through a still unknown, but increasingly constrained process, form an outwardly diffusing gaseous, dust-free Keplerian disk. In this work, first the definition of Be stars is contrasted to similar classes, and common observables obtained for Be stars are introduced and the respective formation mechanisms explained. We then review the current state of knowledge concerning the central stars as non-radially pulsating objects and non-magnetic stars, as far as it concerns large scale, i.e., mostly dipolar, global fields. Localized, weak magnetic fields remain possible, but are as of yet unproven. The Be phenomenon, linked with one or more mass ejection processes, acts on top of a rotation rate of about 75% of critical or above. The properties of the process can be well constrained, leaving only few options, most importantly, but not exclusively, non-radial pulsation and small scale magnetic fields. Of these, it is well possible that all are realized: In different stars, different processes may be acting. Once the material has been lifted into Keplerian orbit, memory of the details of the ejection process is lost, and the material is governed by viscosity. The disks are fairly well understood in the theoretical framework of the viscous decretion disk model. This is not only true for the disk structure, but as well for its variability, both cyclic and secular. Be binaries are reviewed under the aspect of the various types of interactions a companion can have with the circumstellar disk. The Luminous Blue Variable (LBV) R71 is currently undergoing an eruption, which differs photometrically and spectroscopically from its last outburst in the 1970s. Valuable information on the physics of LBV eruptions can be gained by analyzing the spectral evolution during this eruption and by comparing R71's present appearance to its previous outburst and its quiescent state. Here we present the first spectra of an ongoing monitoring program with VLT/X-shooter and compare them to archival VLT/UVES and MPG/ESO-2.2m/FEROS spectra from 2002-2011. The discussed data include pre-eruption spectra in 2002 and 2005, a spectrum of the transitionary phase between quiescent and eruptive state in 2007, and spectra of the eruption in 2011-2012. The 2011-2012 spectra are dominated by strong neutral and singly ionized metal absorption lines likely formed in a large "pseudo-photosphere." We find an unusually low apparent temperature of R71 of only ~6650 K; the star resembles a late F supergiant. R71's visual lightcurve had a maximum in 2012 with mV ~ 8.7 mag. Given the uncertainty in the extinction towards R71, this corresponds to a bolometric luminosity of -9.8 mag to -10.3 mag. R71's 2011-2012 spectra do not show H I and Fe II P Cyg profiles, which were present during its last outburst in the 1970s and which are normally observed during LBV outbursts. The rise in R71's visual magnitude and the low apparent temperature of its pseudo-photosphere during the current eruption are unprecedented for this star. R71 most likely increased its bolometric luminosity by 0.4-1.3 mag compared to its quiescent state. The very low temperature of its pseudo-photosphere implies a very high-mass loss rate, a factor of 1000 higher than during the quiescence state. To this date ψ Per is the only classical Be star that was angularly resolved in radio (by the VLA at λ = 2 cm). Gaussian fit to the azimuthally averaged visibility data indicates a disk size (FWHM) of ~500 stellar radii (Dougherty & Taylor 1992). Recently, we obtained new multi-band cm flux density measurements of ψ Per from the enhanced VLA. We modeled the observed spectral energy distribution (SED) covering the interval from ultraviolet to radio using the Monte Carlo radiative transfer code HDUST (Carciofi & Bjorkman 2006). An SED turndown, that occurs between far-IR and radio wavelengths, is explained by a truncated viscous decretion disk (VDD), although the shallow slope of the radio SED suggests that the disk is not simply cut off, as is assumed in our model. The best-fit size of a truncated disk derived from the modeling of the radio SED is 100+5−15 stellar radii, which is in striking contrast with the result of Dougherty & Taylor (1992). The reasons for this discrepancy are under investigation.

Luminous blue variables (LBVs) are massive stars caught in a post-main sequence phase, during which they lose a significant amount of mass. Since, on one hand, it is thought that the majority of massive stars are close binaries that will interact during their lifetime, and on the other, the most dramatic example of an LBV, η Car, is a binary, it would be useful to find other binary LBVs. We present here interferometric observations of the LBV HR Car done with the AMBER and PIONIER instruments attached to ESO's Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI). Our observations, spanning two years, clearly reveal that HR Car is a binary star. It is not yet possible to fully constrain the orbit, and the orbital period may lie between a few years and several hundred years. We derive a radius for the primary in the system and possibly also resolve the companion. The luminosity ratio in the H-band between the two components is changing with time, going from about 6 to 9. We also tentatively detect the presence of some background flux which remained at the 2% level until January 2016, but then increased to 6% in April 2016. Our AMBER results show that the emission line-forming region of Brγ is more extended than the continuum-emitting region as seen by PIONIER and may indicate some wind-wind interaction. Most importantly, we constrain the total masses of both components, with the most likely range being 33.6 MȮ and 45 MȮ. Our results show that the LBV HR Car is possibly an η Car analog binary system with smaller masses, with variable components, and further monitoring of this object is definitively called for., SCOPUS: ar.j, info:eu-repo/semantics/published

Be stars possess gaseous circumstellar decretion disks, which are well described using standard $\alpha$-disk theory. The Be star 28 CMa recently underwent a long outburst followed by a long period of quiescence, during which the disk dissipated. Here we present the first time-dependent models of the dissipation of a viscous decretion disk. By modeling the rate of decline of the V-band excess, we determine that the viscosity parameter $\alpha=1.0\pm0.2$, corresponding to a mass injection rate $\dot{M}=(3.5\pm 1.3) \times 10^{-8}\ M_\sun\,\mathrm{yr}^{-1}$. Such a large value of $\alpha$ suggests that the origin of the turbulent viscosity is an instability in the disk whose growth is limited by shock dissipation. The mass injection rate is more than an order of magnitude larger than the wind mass loss rate inferred from UV observations, implying that the mass injection mechanism most likely is not the stellar wind, but some other mechanism., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ Letters

Be star phenomenology is strongly associated with their viscous circumstellar disks. Recently, models became available for the temporal evolution of these disks when subject to variable mass ejection rates. In this contribution we will discuss how these dynamical disk models, modeled with the radiative transfer code HDUST, can be used for constraining fundamental disk parameters, such as the α viscosity parameter, and we will report on an ongoing effort to model light curves of a large number of stars.

Near-IR photometry of η Car since 1972 revealed a long-term trend towards hotter temperatures and a cycloidal behavior of its near-IR colors around periastron passages. Both effects are likely triggered by the companion. We used VLTI AMBER observations from 2004–2014 to investigate η Car's variabilities in the near-IR.

BI108 is a luminous variable star in the Large Magellanic Cloud classified B1II. The variability consists of two resonant periods (3:2), of which only one is orbital, however. PUCHEROS is a high resolution optical Echelle spectrograph designed for the 50 cm telescope located at the Pontificia Universidad Cat´olica de Chile (PUC) observatory of Santa Martina. With a resolution about 20,000, PUCHEROS is an ideal instrument to study bright and variable objects, our driving science case is the study of bright early type stars. Using a fiber optic to bring the light from the telescope to the instrument, it can be located in a gravity invariant, temperature stabilized location, allowing precise long-term stability. PUCHEROS will be a valuable tool both for research and didactics at the graduate and undergraduate level. In this work we present the optical and mechanical design of the spectrograph as well as the first laboratory tests.

The ESO Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI) offers access to the four 8-m Unit Telescopes (UT) and the four 1.8-m Auxiliary Telescopes (AT) of the Paranal Observatory located in the Atacama Desert in northern Chile. The two VLTI instruments, MIDI and AMBER deliver regular scientific results. In parallel to the operation, the instruments developments are pursued, and new modes are studied and commissioned to offer a wider range of scientific possibilities to the community. New configurations of the ATs array are discussed with the science users of the VLTI and implemented to optimize the scientific return. The monitoring and improvement of the different systems of the VLTI is a continuous work. The PRIMA instrument, bringing astrometry capability to the VLTI and phase referencing to the instruments has been successfully installed and the commissioning is ongoing. The possibility for visiting instruments has been opened to the VLTI facility.

The ESO Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI) offers access to the four 8 m Unit Telescopes (UT) and the four 1.8 m Auxiliary Telescopes (AT) of the Paranal Observatory located in the Atacama Desert in northern Chile. The fourth AT has been delivered to operation in December 2006, increasing the flexibility and simultaneous baselines access of the VLTI. Regular science operations are now carried on with the two VLTI instruments, AMBER and MIDI. The FINITO fringe tracker is now used for both visitor and service observations with ATs and will be offered on UTs in October 2008, bringing thus the fringe tracking facility to VLTI instruments. In parallel to science observations, technical periods are also dedicated to the characterization of the VLTI environment, upgrades of the existing systems, and development of new facilities. We will describe the current status of the VLTI and prospects on future evolution.
