Consumption of different food groups is linked to a range of health outcomes. It is essential to integrate the most reliable evidence regarding intake of different food groups and risk of mortality to optimize dietary guidance. Our aim is to systematically and comprehensively assess the associations between the consumption of various food groups and all-cause mortality. The food groups under consideration include edible grains (refined and whole grains), fruits, vegetables, nuts, legumes, fish and fish products, eggs, dairy products/milk, meat and meat products (including processed meat, unprocessed red and white meat), sugar-sweetened beverages, and added sugars. We present these associations with high versus low consumption and per serving comparisons. We comprehensively and systematically reviewed a search in Medline, Embase, Web of Science, and Epistemonikos (PROSPERO: CRD42024498035), identifying 41 meta-analyses involving over a million participants, many of which showed significant heterogeneity. Of the 41 studies, 18 were rated high quality, 8 moderate quality, 5 low quality, and 10 critically low quality according to AMSTAR-2 assessments. Our findings revealed that higher consumption of nuts, whole grains, fruits, vegetables and fish was associated with lower mortality rates, both in high versus low comparisons and per serving analyses. Similarly, we observed favorable outcomes for legumes and white meat in high versus low comparisons. Conversely, high intakes of red and processed meats, as well as sugar-sweetened beverages, were linked to higher all-cause mortality. Background/objectives: Dietary choices play an essential role in energy balance and weight gain. This systematic umbrella review investigates the association between the intake of various food groups (whole grains, refined grains, fruits, vegetables, nuts, legumes, fish, eggs, total dairy, red meat, white meat, processed meat, added sugar, and sugar-sweetened beverages) and their associations to the risk of obesity and being overweight., Methods: We systematically searched Medline, Embase, Web of Science, and Epistemonikos for systematic reviews and meta-analyses. A total of 2925 articles were screened, and 13 articles were included in our analysis., Results: For each food group, data included a mean of 166,100 participants and 36,760 cases, ranging from 19,885 participants and 7183 cases for red meat to 520,331 participants and 91,256 cases for nuts. Heterogeneity was high for most of the food groups except for whole grains and sugar-sweetened beverages. The quality of the most comprehensive meta-analyses was high for all food groups, except for processed meats, which was of low quality. High intakes of whole grains, legumes, nuts, and fruits are associated with a reduced risk of overweight and obesity. In contrast, high intakes of red meat and sugar-sweetened beverages are associated with increased risk of overweight and obesity. No significant results were found for the remaining food groups, and no meta-analysis was found for fish, eggs, white meat, and added sugars., Conclusions: Diets rich in whole grains, legumes, nuts, and fruits are associated with a lower risk of developing obesity and being overweight. In contrast, diets high in red meat and sugar-sweetened beverages are associated with an increased risk of overweight and obesity.

Introduction: In 2012, the estimated global prevalence of pre-diabetes was 280 million, and the prevalence is expected to rise to 400 million by 2030. Oat-based foods are a good source of beta-glucans, which have been shown to lower postprandial blood glucose. Studies to evaluate the effectiveness of the long-term intake of beta-glucan-enriched bread as part of a habitual diet among individuals with pre-diabetes are needed. Therefore, we designed a multicentre intervention study in adults with pre-diabetes to investigate the effects of consumption of an oat-derived beta-glucan-enriched bread as part of a normal diet on glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c) in comparison to consumption of whole-grain wheat bread., Methods and Analysis: The CarbHealth trial is a multicentre double-blind randomised controlled 16-week dietary intervention trial in participants 40-70 years of age with a body mass index of ≥27 kg/m 2 and HbA1c of 35-50 mmol/mol. The study is conducted at four universities located in Norway, Sweden and Germany and uses intervention breads specifically designed for the trial by Nofima AS. The aim is to recruit 250 participants. The primary outcome is the difference in HbA1c between the intervention and the control groups. The main analysis will include intervention group, study centre and baseline HbA1c as independent variables in an analysis of covariance model., Ethics and Dissemination: The study protocol was approved by respective ethical authorities in participating countries. Objective: Patients with short bowel syndrome (SBS) and colon in continuity have better adaptation potential compared with patients with jejunostomy. Adaptation may involve enhanced postprandial secretion of the enteroendocrine hormones glucagon-like peptide (GLP)-1 and GLP-2 which are normally degraded by dipeptidyl peptidase (DPP)-4. Nevertheless, some patients with SBS with colon in continuity suffer from high-volume faecal excretions and have been shown to benefit from treatment with GLP-2. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate efficacy of sitagliptin, a DPP-4 inhibitor, on reducing faecal excretions in this patient group., Design: In an open-label, case series, proof-of-concept pilot study, 100 mg oral sitagliptin was given two times per day for 8 weeks to patients with SBS with ≥50% colon in continuity with or without the need for parenteral support (PS). To assess intestinal function, metabolic balance studies were done at baseline and following 8 weeks of treatment., Results: Of the 10 patients planned for enrolment, 8 patients were included; 7 patients completed the study. Although postprandial endogenous GLP-2 concentrations increased by 49 hours×pmol/L (39, 105; p=0.018) (median (min, max)), sitagliptin did not significantly reduce median faecal wet weight (-174 g/day (-1510, 675; p=0.176)) or increase intestinal wet weight absorption. However, heterogeneity in the treatment effect was observed: intestinal wet weight absorption increased in all four patients with intestinal failure. One patient achieved a reduction in PS by 500 mL per administration day., Conclusion: Following this negative, small pilot study, larger, placebo-controlled, studies are needed to establish the therapeutic potential of DPP-4 inhibition in patients with SBS., Competing Interests: Competing interests: JJH has received speaker honoraria from MSD.
