Research describing superconducting magnets for an electromagnetic space launch assist catapult is presented. Superconducting magnets are proposed as the primary suspension for this system because of their ability to permit high clearances between track and vehicle.

Research is presented describing how the cost of large warm-bore superconducting quadrupoles used in the magnetic imaging systems of accelerators is estimated. Results show that cost estimate is influenced by the magnet's aperture, length, and gradient.

The achievements of the US Home Team and International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor collaboration for the CS model coil program are investigated.

The design and fabrication techniques for the ITER magnets are supported by the ITER Model Coil Program which focuses on component development and performance verification. The key component of the magnet system is the high current capacity (45 - 60 kA), [Nb.sub.3]Sn, cable-in-conduit conductor, which is now being fabricated under a staged development program. The integrated design features and performance of the 13 T Toroidal Field coils and Central Solenoid will be verified in the Model Coil Program. This paper describes the status of the structural and construction features of the model coils and the test facilities for the model coils at JAERI (Naka) and FZK (Karlsruhe).

The superconducting coil systems for the International Thermonuclear Test Reactor (ITER) will consist of 24 toroidal Field (TF) coils at 488 tonnes each, a central solenoid (CS) at 964 tonnes, and an external poloidal field coil set of 6 coils, the largest of which has a diameter of 30 m. The TF and CS coils will operate at a maximum field at the windings of 13 T and will use [Nb.sub.3]Sn conductor in cable-in-conduit form. The TF coils and the CS are layer wound. The design features of each of these systems are described.

The engineering design of an ignition scale fusion reactor is underway with worldwide participation. The project is located at three sites & carried out by people seconded as Joint Central Team members. Technical support is provided by four Home Teams. The superconducting coils for the system will require about 1600 tonnes of [Nb.sub.3]Sn strand and will be the largest ever built. The features of the magnet designs and of the R&D program that is underway are described.

A comparison between niobium titanium and Nb3Sn cable-in-conduit conductors (CICC) was carried out at 8 K. The study was conducted to verify the required operating temperature, critical current density and energy margin of superconducting coils used in magnetically levitated transport systems for levitation and propulsion purposes. The results demonstrated the superiority of the Nb3Sn CICC over other conductors.
