Abstract

Fractured surfaces carry unique details that can provide an accurate quantitative comparison to support comparative forensic analysis of those fractured surfaces. In this study, a statistical analysis comparison protocol was applied to a set of 3D topological images of fractured surface pairs and their replicas to provide confidence in the quantitative statistical comparison between fractured items and their replicas. A set of 10 fractured stainless steel samples was fractured from the same metal rod under controlled conditions and were cast using a standard forensic casting technique. Six 3D topological maps with 50% overlap were acquired for each fractured pair. Spectral analysis was utilized to identify the correlation between topological surface features at different length scales of the surface topology. We selected two frequency bands over the critical wavelength (which is greater than two-grain diameters) for statistical comparison. Our statistical model utilized a matrix-variate-$t$ distribution that accounts for the image-overlap to model the match and non-match population densities. A decision rule was developed to identify the probability of matched and unmatched pairs of surfaces. The proposed methodology correctly classified the fractured steel surfaces and their replicas with a posterior probability of match exceeding 99.96%. Moreover, the replication technique shows the potential to accurately replicate fracture surface topological details with a wavelength greater than 20$\mu$m, which far exceeds the range for comparison of most metallic alloys of 50-200$\mu$m. Abstract

Fractured metal fragments with rough and irregular surfaces are often found at crime scenes. Current forensic practice visually inspects the complex jagged trajectory of fractured surfaces to recognize a ``match'' using comparative microscopy and physical pattern analysis. We developed a novel computational framework, utilizing the basic concepts of fracture mechanics and statistical analysis to provide quantitative match analysis for match probability and error rates. The framework employs the statistics of fracture surfaces to become non-self-affine with unique roughness characteristics at relevant microscopic length scale, dictated by the intrinsic material resistance to fracture and its microstructure. At such a scale, which was found to be greater than two grain-size or micro-feature-size, we establish that the material intrinsic properties, microstructure, and exposure history to external forces on an evidence fragment have the premise of uniqueness, which quantitatively describes the microscopic features on the fracture surface for forensic comparisons. The methodology utilizes 3D spectral analysis of overlapping topological images of the fracture surface and classifies specimens with very high accuracy using statistical learning. Cross correlations of image-pairs in two frequency ranges are used to develop matrix variate statistical models for the distributions among matching and non-matching pairs of images, and provides a decision rule for identifying matches and determining error rates. A set of thirty eight different fracture surfaces of steel articles were correctly classified. Abstract

We introduce CatSIM, a new similarity metric for binary and multinary two- and three-dimensional images and volumes. CatSIM uses a structural similarity image quality paradigm and is robust to small perturbations in location so that structures in similar, but not entirely overlapping, regions of two images are rated higher than using simple matching. The metric can also compare arbitrary regions inside images. Abstract

The complex jagged trajectory of fractured surfaces of two pieces of forensic evidence is used to recognize a "match" by using comparative microscopy and tactile pattern analysis. The material intrinsic properties and microstructures, as well as the exposure history of external forces on a fragment of forensic evidence have the premise of uniqueness at a relevant microscopic length scale (about 2–3 grains for cleavage fracture), wherein the statistics of the fracture surface become non-self-affine. We utilize these unique features to quantitatively describe the microscopic aspects of fracture surfaces for forensic comparisons, employing spectral analysis of the topography mapped by three-dimensional microscopy. Multivariate statistical learning tools are used to classify articles and result in near-perfect identification of a "match" and "non-match" among candidate forensic specimens. The framework has the potential for forensic application across a broad range of fractured materials and toolmarks, of diverse texture and mechanical properties. Abstract

This paper examines the cultivation of artistic sensibility and its impact on the art therapy process and product in a community mental health center. Artistic sensibility embodies the sense of self as an artist through the integration of artistic and aesthetic attributes of self and other. The formation of a gallery to exhibit patient art was found to promote empowerment by embracing the patients as artists and by reframing identities, roles, and self-defining experiences. In the gallery model of art therapy, artistic sensibility extends the studio experience of the process to the art product, strengthens the creative process, and de-stigmatizes mental illness. 35. The ecology and control of Culicoides : potential vectors of bluetongue and African horse sickness in Northern Ireland

Abstract

Culicoides midges are important haematophagous insects. Their principal significance is as vectors of> 75 diseases worldwide. Surveillance over a four-year period using Onderstepoort UV-light traps, found that Culicoides Obsolelus and Pulicaris groups dominated the species assemblage in Northern Ireland, at 74.8% and 20.7% of the total catch, respectively. Should a Culicoides vectored disease be introduced into Northern Ireland during the vector active period (early April to mid December), there are ample potential vectors to enable disease transmission. Principal Component Analysis of habitats surrunding trap locations confirmed that Culicoides abundance was positively correlated to characteristics of a livestock-rearing farm, whilst negatively correlated to arable and non-vegetated land. There was no significant difference between numbers pf Obsoletus Culicoides trapped outdoors or within cattle housing. However, fewer Pulicaris group Culicoides were captured in indoor compared to outdoor traps. Obsoletus group Culicoides breed mostly in cattle dung, whilst most Pulicaris group emerged from sheep dung. Cattle slurry and on-farm middens were also identified as suitable breeding sites for Obsoletus group Culicoides, although emergence from these substrates was sporadic. Culicoides alighting on farm livestock were mostly Obsoletus and Pulicaris groups, representing 92.0% and 7.7% of all Culicoides captured, respectively. Pulicaris group Culicoides had an intrinsic attraction to sheep when compared with cattle on a per liveweight basis. However, there was no evidence to suggest that Obsoletus group Culicoides fed preferentially on cattle over sheep, suggesting that this group is prone to opportunistic host seeking behaviour. Visual cues played a significant role in the host seeking behaviour of Obsoletus group Culicoides, with white and clear traps more attractive than yellow or blue.
