11. GPC: A Calibration of Normal Paraffins by Carbon Number

Abstract

Normal hydrocarbons have been used to calibrate GPC columns and to determine the relationship between 1) boiling point and carbon number, 2) boiling point and elution volume. A limited number of branched hydrocarbons were also studied to determine the effect and magnitude of structural change on GPC data. A brief quantitation study was undertaken to determine response factors for the normal hydrocarbons. The results of these studies are being used in an attempt to develop a GPC based procedure for the determination of boiling range distribution of petroleum fractions.
