The DLF AIG Content Reuse Working Group is developing tools and documentation to better assess the reuse of digital objects. This is particularly of relevance to GLAMR practitioners since there are no established definitions, standards, or common practices for the assessment of digital object reuse. This presentation will focus on two deliverables: a set of reuse assessment data collection Recommended Practices and Ethical Guidelines for assessing reuse. Presenters will provide an overview of the Recommended Practices and associated tools that practitioners can utilize to collect reuse assessment data. They will introduce the Ethical Guidelines and discuss how practitioners can use them to develop more considerate assessment practices for understanding the reuse of the collections they steward. The Guidelines aim to examine the social and political overtures of those working in and impacted by GLAMR environments, and the importance of aligning ethics, values, and accountability in the work process from which future peers draw. Presenters will conclude the talk by articulating how the Recommended Practices and Ethical Guidelines begin to address the lack of standards and common practices for assessing reuse as well as by situating these outputs in the IMLS-funded project "Digital Content Reuse Assessment Framework Toolkit."

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to present conceptual definitions for digital object use and reuse. Typically, assessment of digital repository content struggles to go beyond traditional usage metrics such as clicks, views or downloads. This is problematic for galleries, libraries, archives, museums and repositories (GLAMR) practitioners because use assessment does not tell a nuanced story of how users engage with digital content and objects.Design/methodology/approach: This paper reviews prior research and literature aimed at defining use and reuse of digital content in GLAMR contexts and builds off of this group���s previous research to devise a new model for defining use and reuse called the use-reuse matrix. Findings: This paper presents the use-reuse matrix, which visually represents eight categories and numerous examples of use and reuse. Additionally, the paper explores the concept of ���permeability��� and its bearing on the matrix. It concludes with the next steps for future research and application in the development of the Digital Content Reuse Assessment Framework Toolkit (D-CRAFT). Practical implications: The authors developed this model and definitions to inform D-CRAFT, an Institute of Museum and Library Services National Leadership Grant project. This toolkit is being developed to help practitioners assess reuse at their own institutions. This presentation explores the complexities of measuring the impact of use vs. reuse among cultural heritage and knowledge organizations (including but not limited to museums, libraries, archives, data repositories, and historical societies). It will provide an overview of the project team's evolving definitions for use and reuse, informed by their work with the Measuring Reuse project. These definitions help delineate the differences between reuse and use, thus setting the stage to help information professionals determine which use cases should be considered use or reuse and developing more detailed and relevant assessments of the impact of digital collections. The speakers will apply the new definitions to specific use cases to show their utility and value and suggest how these efforts will lead to more informed assessment methods of digital library materials.

The University of Houston (UH) Libraries, in partnership and consultation with numerous institutions, was awarded an IMLS National Leadership/Project Grant to support the creation of the Bridge2Hyku (B2H) Toolkit. Contents migration from proprietary systems to open source repositories remains a barrier for many institutions due to lack of tools, tutorials, and documentation. The B2H Toolkit, which includes migration strategies and use cases as well as tools for transitioning from CONTENTdm to Hyku, acts as a comprehensive resource to facilitate the repository migration process. This presentation will start with background information on the ecosystems, workflows, and tools, collectively known as the Bayou City Digital Asset Management System (BCDAMS), implemented at the UH Libraries. The presenters will then move to the key phases that make up the IMLS funded B2H Toolkit project plan. The presenters will also discuss how the project engages and strengthens the open source Samvera Community (formerly Hydra Community) around Hyku by leveraging our collective expertise through strategic collaboration. They will finally discuss sustainability and promotion of the B2H toolkit.

The first step of the Developing a Framework for Measuring Reuse of Digital Objects project involved a survey identifying how cultural heritage organizations currently assess digital library reuse, barriers to assessing reuse, and community priorities for potential solutions and next steps.
