2. Moving to Opportunity: Student Trajectories in the Post-Bologna University System in Denmark

Abstract

This paper examines whether the implementation of the Bologna bachelor's + master's structure has been followed by an increase of university students from under-represented groups, and whether the Bologna structure has been accompanied by new forms of student mobility between Danish university institutions. Looking at student movements from bachelor's to master's degrees from 1993 to 2011, I do not find that the implementation of the Bologna structure has been followed by changes in the inclusion of under-represented groups. The social gap in progression to master's degrees remained small and constant across the period. However, the formal instalment of a new transition point in the Danish university system (from bachelor's to master's) has provided bachelor's degree holders with the opportunity to flee less lucrative fields of study and less prestigious institutions, and they increasingly do so. I discuss the implications of these movements in the light of the aim to make higher education more inclusive.

3. The Social Class Gap in Bachelor's and Master's Completion: University Dropout in Times of Educational Expansion

Abstract

While many papers have focused on socially unequal admissions in higher education, this paper looks at the persistence of class differentials after enrolment. I examine the social class gap in bachelor's programme dropout and in the transition from bachelor's to master's in Denmark from the formal introduction of the bachelor's degree in 1993 up to recent cohorts. Using administrative data, I find that the class gap in bachelor's departures has remained constant from 1993 to 2006, with disadvantaged students being around 15 percentage points more likely to leave a bachelor's programme than advantaged students, even after adjusting for other factors such as grades from upper secondary school. Importantly, the class gap reappears at the master's level, with privileged students being more likely to pursue a master's degree than less privileged students. The size of the class gap is remarkable, given that this gap is found among a selected group of university enrolees. As other studies have found that educational expansion in higher education is not necessarily a remedy for narrowing the class gap in educational attainment, scholars need to pay more attention to keeping disadvantaged students from leaving higher education.

Abstract

Analyses show that: (a) majority members are particularly prejudiced toward the most culturally distant out-groups (i.e. Poles and Iraqis), (b) unpleasant contact experiences enhance the capacity of ethnic characteristics to generate prejudice toward Poles and Iraqis (rather than toward Norwegians), and (c) pleasant contact experiences weaken the capacity of ethnic characteristics to generate prejudice toward Poles and Iraqis. Analyses were performed on a tailor-made experimental survey manipulating ethnic characteristics, fielded in Denmark in 2021 (N = 1,882). Findings suggest that social identity theory must incorporate insights into how social interaction affects the interethnic differences–prejudice relationship. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

In this paper, we use data from 44 Danish families to develop a new conceptual framework for analysing family learning environments and how they shape children’s opportunities in the Scandinavian context. We use data from qualitative interviews and a new smartphone app to outline six key dimensions of family learning environments that intersect in four types, which we label Expansive curators, Recreational home dwellers, Casual pragmatists and Disempowered strugglers. The dimensions and types of family learning environments provide a conceptual framework for (1) identifying a set of mechanisms that might explain intergenerational associations in socioeconomic outcomes; (2) linking dimensions of family learning environments often studied in isolation (e.g. family activities and networks); (3) incorporating dimensions of learning environments rarely considered (e.g. day care and children’s use of digital devices); and (4) distinguishing socioeconomic gradients in family learning environments.

Abstract

Previous studies have assumed that the relationship between intergroup contact and affective polarization is uniform across political predispositions. We argue instead that party identification serves as a boundary condition for the intergroup contact‒affective polarization relationship. Our findings suggest that: (1) intergroup contact between "in‐party" and "out‐party" supporters reduces affective polarization among nonidentifiers, weak, and moderate party identifiers, and (2) intergroup contact remains unrelated to affective polarization among strong party identifiers. These findings apply to high‐ and low‐quality contact measures alike, meaning that party identification strength is an essential boundary condition capable of obstructing the impact of contact on affective polarization. Analyses were performed on a new sample among Danish citizens. The survey was fielded in 2021 (n = 3638). The findings contribute to both intergroup contact research and to the study of the sources of affective polarization.
