Performance during the baseball pitch is dependent on the flow of mechanical energy through the kinetic chain. Little is known about energy flow during the pitching motion and it is not known whether patterns of energy flow are related to pitching performance and injury risk. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to quantify energy generation, absorption, and transfer across the shoulder and elbow during the baseball pitch and explore the associations between these energetic measures, pitch speed, and traditional measures of upper extremity joint loading. The kinematics of 40 youth baseball pitchers were measured in a controlled laboratory setting. Energy flow between the thorax, humerus, and forearm was calculated using a segmental power analysis. Regression analyses revealed that pitch speed was best predicted by arm cocking phase shoulder energy transfer to the humerus and peak elbow valgus torque was best predicted by arm acceleration-phase elbow energy transfer to the forearm. Additionally, energy transfer across the shoulder and elbow generally exhibited the strongest correlations to pitch speed and upper extremity joint loads. These data reinforce the importance of energy transfer through the kinetic chain for producing high pitch speeds and provide descriptive data for energy flow during baseball pitching not previously found in the literature.

Superficial fascia is a fibrofatty tissue found throughout the body. Initially described in relation to hernias, it has only recently received attention from the scientific community due to new evidence on its role in force transmission and structural integrity of the body. Considering initial difficulties in its anatomical identification, to date, a characterization of the superficial fascia through mechanical tests is still lacking. The mechanical properties of human superficial fasciae of abdominal and thoracic districts (back) of different subjects (n = 4) were then investigated, focusing on anisotropy and viscoelasticity. Experimental tests were performed on samples taken in two perpendicular directions according to body planes (cranio-caudal and latero-medial axes). Data collected from two different uniaxial tensile protocols, failure (i.e., ultimate tensile strength and strain at break, Young's modulus and toughness) and stress-relaxation (i.e., residual stress), were processed and then grouped for statistical analysis. Failure tests confirmed tissue anisotropy, revealing the stiffer nature of the latero-medial direction compared to the cranio-caudal one, for both the districts (with a ratio of the respective Young's moduli close to 2). Furthermore, the thoracic region exhibited significantly greater strength and resultant Young's modulus compared to the abdomen (with greater results along the latero-medial direction, such as 6.13 ± 3.11 MPa versus 0.85 ± 0.39 MPa and 24.87 ± 15.23 MPa versus 3.19 ± 1.62 MPa, respectively). On the contrary, both regions displayed similar strain at break (varying between 38 and 47%), with no clear dependence from the loading directions. Stress-relaxation tests highlighted the viscous behavior of the superficial fascia, with no significant differences in the stress decay between directions and districts (35-38% of residual stress after 300 s). Background: The large number of articulating joints within the spinal column provides an abundance of options to control its movement. However, the ability of individuals to consciously manipulate these movement options is poorly understood., Objectives: To determine if short-term training can improve the ability to consciously dissociate motion between the pelvis and thorax during repetitive pelvic tilting movements., Design: Cross-over design with young healthy individuals., Method: Seventeen participants performed trials consisting of 35 continuous lift/lowers followed by 35 continuous anterior/posterior pelvic tilts while spine kinematics were recorded. Participants then underwent a 20-min training protocol designed to improve the control of pelvic motion and in particular the dissociation of pelvic and trunk motion. Post-training, the continuous pelvic tilt and lift/lower trials were repeated. Thorax-pelvis movement coordination was analyzed via vector coding and lumbar spine local dynamic stability was analyzed via Lyapunov exponents. Participants were grouped as being either high or low skill movers based on their ability to perform the pre-training pelvic tilt movements., Results: The low skill movement group demonstrated statistically significant increases in the time spent using in-phase pelvic dominant (p = 0.028) and anti-phase pelvic dominant (p = 0.043) coordination patterns during the pelvic tilt movements after the completion of the training protocol. The high skill movement group showed no differences in their movement patterns post-training., Conclusions: Short-term training, targeted to improve the ability to dissociate pelvic from thorax motion, had a beneficial effect on the group of individuals who initially lacked skill performing the pelvic tilting task., (Copyright © 2024 Elsevier Ltd. Objective: This study introduces a novel system that can simulate diverse mechanical properties of the human chest to enhance the experience of CPR training by reflecting realistic chest conditions of patients., Methods: The proposed system consists of Variable stiffness mechanisms (VSMs) and Variable damper (VD) utilizing stretching silicone bands and dashpot dampers with controllable valves to modulate stiffness and damping, respectively. Cyclic loading was applied with a robot manipulator to the system. Compression force and displacement were measured and analyzed to evaluate the system's mechanical response. Long-term stability of the system was also validated., Results: A non-linear response of the human chest under compression is realized through this design. Test results indicated non-linear force-displacement curves with hysteresis, similar to those observed in the chest of patients. Controlling the VSM and VD allowed for intentional changes in the slope and area of curves that are related to stiffness and damping, respectively. Stiffness and damping of the system were computed using performance test results. The stiffness ranged from 5.34 N/mm to 13.59 N/mm and the damping ranges from 0.127 N[Formula: see text] s/mm to 0.511 N[Formula: see text] s/mm. These properties cover a significant portion of the reported mechanical properties of the human chests. This research sought to evaluate the thermal zones of the upper body and firefighter personal protective equipment (PPE) immediately following uncompensable heat stress (0.03 °C increase/min). We hypothesized that the frontal portion of the head and the inside of the firefighter helmet would be the hottest as measured by infrared thermography. This hypothesis was due to previous research demonstrating that the head accounts for ∼8-10% of the body surface area, but it accounts for ∼20% of the overall body heat dissipation during moderate exercise. Twenty participants performed a 21-min graded treadmill exercise protocol (Altered Modified Naughton) in an environmental chamber (35 °C, 50 % humidity) in firefighter PPE. The body areas analyzed were the frontal area of the head, chest, abdomen, arm, neck, upper back, and lower back. The areas of the PPE that were analyzed were the inside of the helmet and the jacket. The hottest areas of the body post-exercise were the frontal area of the head (mean: 37.3 ± 0.4 °C), chest (mean: 37.5 ± 0.3 °C), and upper back (mean: 37.3 ± 0.4 °C). The coldest area of the upper body was the abdomen (mean: 36.1 ± 0.4 °C). The peak temperature of the inside of the helmet increased (p < 0.001) by 9.8 °C from 27.7 ± 1.6 °C to 37.4 ± 0.7 °C, and the inside of the jacket increased (p < 0.001) by 7.3 °C from 29.2 ± 1.7 °C to 36.5 ± 0.4 °C. The diversity in butterfly morphology has attracted many people around the world since ancient times. Despite morphological diversity, the wing and body kinematics of butterflies have several common features. In the present study, we constructed a bottom-up butterfly model, whose morphology and kinematics are simplified while preserving the important features of butterflies. The present bottom-up butterfly model is composed of two trapezoidal wings and a rod-shaped body with a thorax and abdomen. Its wings are flapped downward in the downstroke and backward in the upstroke by changing the geometric angle of attack (AOA). The geometric AOA is determined by the thorax-pitch and wing-pitch angles. The thorax-pitch angle is actively controlled by abdominal undulation, and the wing-pitch angle is passively determined because of a rotary spring representing the basalar and subalar muscles connecting the wings and thorax. We investigated the effectiveness of abdominal undulation for thorax-pitch control and how wing-pitch flexibility affects aerodynamic-force generation and thorax-pitch control, through numerical simulations using the immersed boundary-lattice Boltzmann method. As a result, the thorax-pitch angle perfectly follows the desired angle through abdominal undulation. In addition, there is an optimal wing-pitch flexibility that maximizes the flying speed in both the forward and upward directions, but the effect of wing-pitch flexibility on thorax-pitch control is not significant. Finally, we compared the flight behavior of the present bottom-up butterfly model with that of an actual butterfly. The thoracoabdominal breathing motion pattern is being considered in sports training because of its contribution, along with other physiological adaptations, to overall performance. We examined whether and how experience with cycling training modifies the thoracoabdominal motion patterns. We utilized optoelectronic plethysmography to monitor ten trained male cyclists and compared them to ten physically active male participants performing breathing maneuvers. Cyclists then participated in a self-paced time trial to explore the similarity between that observed during resting breathing. From the 3D coordinates of 32 markers positioned on each participant's trunk, we calculated the percentage of contribution of the superior thorax, inferior thorax, and abdomen and the correlation coefficient among these compartments. During the rest maneuvers, the cyclists showed a thoracoabdominal motion pattern characterized by an increased role of the inferior thorax relative to the superior thorax (26.69 ± 5.88%, 34.93 ± 5.03%; p= 0.002, respectively), in contrast to the control group (26.69 ± 5.88%; 25.71 ± 6.04%, p= 0.4, respectively). In addition, the inferior thorax showed higher coordination in phase with the abdomen. J Strength Cond Res 38(6): 1136-1143, 2024-This study examined the impact of 3 months of velocity-based training (VBT) on chest press (CP) and leg press (LP) maximal strength (1 repetition maximum [1RM]), peak power (PP), and percentage load where PP was achieved (%1RMPP) in older adults. Twenty-nine subjects were assigned to either a velocity-deficit (VD) group or a force-deficit (FD) group for each exercise depending on their load-velocity (LV) curves. Changes in load were determined by the ability to maintain either 90% (VD) or 70% (FD) of their PP during training. Subjects' powers were tested before and after the training intervention at loads between 40 and 80%1RM. Separate 2 (group) × 2 (time) ANOVA was used to examine changes in each variable by group for each exercise. Wilcoxon signed-rank tests were used to determine whether significant changes in %1RMPP for each exercise and group. For chest press 1 repetition maximum, there were no significant main effects or interaction. Significant main effects for time were observed for leg press 1 repetition maximum ( p < 0 .001, η2 = 0.547) and chest press peak power ( p = 0.009, η2 = 0.243). For LPPP, there were no significant main effects or interactions. For %1RMPP, CP median scores revealed no significant changes for either group. Significant declines in %1RMPP were observed for leg press velocity-deficit and leg press force-deficit ( p < 0.03) groups. Velocity-based training was effective at improving 1RM, PP, and shifting %1RMPP in the LP groups. These results have implications for targeting power improvements at specific areas of the LV curve. J Strength Cond Res 38(5): 991-998, 2024-Neuromuscular power is essential for the performance of most activities of daily living and the maintenance of functional independence throughout the aging process. Power declines rapidly in later life; however, this decline may be reduced or delayed with early detection and intervention. Therefore, this study provides leg press and chest press power normative values for older women. Women's power data for this analysis included 229 participants, 60-90 years of age. Power testing was conducted on Keiser A420 pneumatic leg press and chest press machines following a standardized protocol. Data were stratified into half-decade age groups and analyzed using a 1-way ANOVA. Descriptive statistics and quartile rankings are reported, and significant differences between age groups are outlined. There were significant differences in absolute and relative leg press peak power between the age groups ( p < 0.05). However, there were no significant differences in absolute or relative chest press peak power between the age groups. This research established normative values and quartile rankings for leg press and chest press power in older women 60-90 years of age, allowing comparative evaluations with patients and subjects by clinicians and researchers, respectively. Background: Poor posture and sedentary lifestyle cause Forward Head Posture (FHP). To correct this, a Posture Correction Band (PCB) is commonly used. However, the efficacy of PCB vs. McKenzie's Exercises on pulmonary function and chest expansion in asymptomatic individuals with FHP was not known., Objective: This study aimed to determine the efficacy of PCB vs. McKenzie's Exercises on the Pulmonary function and chest expansion in asymptomatic population with FHP., Methodology: A Randomized control trial was conducted on forty-two subjects with FHP. Subjects were divided in two groups. G1 group was educated as per McKenzie's exercises to perform once daily for a month. The Pulmonary function test and chest expansion of this group was performed before and after the McKenzie exercises. G2 group wore PCB for 2 h daily for a month and their PFT and chest expansion was recorded before and after the trial. FVC, FEV1, FEV1/FVC ratio, PEFR and Chest expansion were measured., Results: The P-value of FVC, FEV1, FEV1/FVC ratio and PEFR between the groups (treatment group) was significant as 0.000, 0.000, 0.000 and 0.02 respectively. The chest expansion was non-significant between the groups (treatment group) with P-value as 0.553, 0.493 and 0.699 at axillary, 4th intercostal and xiphisternum level respectively. The P-value of FVC, FEV1, FEV1/FVC ratio and PEFR between the groups (control group) was non-significant as 0.682, 0.149, 0.424 and 0.414 respectively. Background and Objective: High-frequency chest wall compression (HFCC) therapy by airway clearance devices (ACDs) acts on the rheological properties of bronchial mucus to assist in clearing pulmonary secretions. Investigating low-frequency vibrations on the human thorax through numerical simulations is critical to ensure consistency and repeatability of studies by reducing extreme variability in body measurements across individuals. This study aims to present the numerical investigation of the harmonic acoustic excitation of ACDs on the human chest as a gentle and effective HFCC therapy., Methods: Four software programs were sequentially used to visualize medical images, decrease the number of surfaces, generate and repair meshes, and conduct numerical analysis, respectively. The developed methodology supplied the validation of the effect of HFCC through computed tomography-based finite element analysis (CT-FEM) of a human thorax. To illustrate the vibroacoustic characteristics of the HFCC therapy device, a 146-decibel sound pressure level (dB SPL ) was applied on the back-chest surface of the model. Frequency response function (FRF) across 5-100 Hz was analyzed to characterize the behaviour of the human thorax with the state-space model., Results: We discovered that FRF pertaining to accelerance equals 0.138 m/s 2 N at the peak frequency of 28 Hz, which is consistent with two independent experimental airway clearance studies reported in the literature. The state-space model assessed two apparent resonance frequencies at 28 Hz and 41 Hz for the human thorax. The total displacement, kinetic energy density, and elastic strain energy density were furthermore quantified at 1 µm, 5.2 µJ/m 3 , and 140.7 µJ/m 3 , respectively, at the resonance frequency. In order to deepen our understanding of the impact on internal organs, the model underwent simulations in both the time domain and frequency domain for a comprehensive analysis., Conclusion: Overall, the present study enabled determining and validating FRF of the human thorax to roll out the inconsistencies, contributing to the health of individuals with investigating gentle but effective HFCC therapy conditions with ACDs. Objectives: The initial frontal NCAP tests in 1979 included lap-shoulder belted driver and right-front passenger and lap belted 6-year-old (yo) in the rear. The 35 mph barrier tests were reviewed and analyzed for the restraint performance of the front occupants and child in the rear., Methods: The initial 100 crash tests (#1-#100) in the NHTSA database were searched for frontal barrier impacts. Fifteen tests met the criteria. There were three tests with the 1980 Chevrolet Citation at 35, 40 and 48 mph. There were 12 other tests with different passenger vehicles at 35 mph into the rigid barrier. The tests included a lap-shoulder belted Hybrid II (Part 572) dummy in the driver and right-front passenger seat and a lap belted 6 yo child dummy (Alderson VIP 6 C) in the center or right rear seat. Vehicle dynamics and occupant kinematics were analyzed, and dummy responses were compared., Results: Vehicle deformation was progressive with impact speed for the Citation tests, leading NHTSA to settle on a 35 mph NCAP speed. The thirteen 35 mph NCAP tests had an average driver HIC of 1099 ± 381 (95th CI 207) and 3 ms chest acceleration of 55.7 ± 16.1 g (95th CI 8.8) with 7 of 13 vehicles failing FMVSS 208 injury criteria. The average right-front passenger HIC was 1179 ± 555 (95th CI 302) and 3 ms chest acceleration was 47.2 ± 14.6 g (95th CI 7.9) with 7 of 13 failing injury criteria. Only four tests (30.8%) passed driver and right-front passenger injury criteria.The responses in the rear seat were significantly worse. The average HIC was 2711 ± 1111 (95th CI 604) and 3 ms chest acceleration was 62.8 ± 10.6 g (95th CI 5.8). The films showed the child's upper body moved forward and rotated downward around the lap belt resulting in severe head impacts on the front seatback, floor, dummy legs or interior. All vehicles failed injury criteria by large margins. Submarining the lap belt was noted in 6 tests. HIC for the rear child was 2.47-times greater than the driver ( t  = 4.72, p  < 0.001) and 2.30-times greater than the right-front passenger ( t  = 3.64, p  < 0.005)., Conclusions: In the 1979 NCAP tests, the child dummy experienced inadequate restraint by the lap belt in the rear seat. The child jackknifed around the lap belt, often submarined, with a severe head impact. No publication of the results has been found. NHTSA did not advise the public of the extremely poor restraint performance, even during the public discussions on the 1986 NTSB recommendation that U.S. vehicle manufacturers install lap-shoulder belts in rear outboard seats. None of the subsequent NCAP tests included a child or adult in the rear until nearly 25 years later.

In surgical staff, low-back pain (LBP) is prevalent and prolonged trunk inclination is hypothesized to be one of its potential causes. The aim of this study was to evaluate the magnitude and duration of trunk inclination in the sagittal plane of surgical assistants during surgical procedures. The three-dimensional trunk orientation was measured in 91 surgical assistants across four medical facilities during surgical procedures using an inertial measurement unit on the thorax. Per participant, Exposure Variation Analysis was used to evaluate the percentage of the total time of trunk inclination (< -10° (backward inclination); -10-10° (upright posture); 10-20° (light inclination); 20-30° (moderate inclination); >30° (strong inclination)) taking into account posture duration (< 10 s; 10-60 s; 60-300 s; > 300 s). Participants reported their LBP history and perceived low-back load during the procedure via a questionnaire. Participants were in an upright posture for 75% [63-84%] (median [interquartile range]) of the total surgery time (average surgery time: 174 min). Trunk inclination was beyond 20° and 30° for 4.3% [2.1-8.7%] and 1.5% [0.5-3.2%] of the surgery time, respectively. In most of the participants, the duration of trunk inclination beyond 20° or 30° was less than 60 s. Questionnaire response rate was 81%. Persistent or repeated LBP was reported by 49% of respondents, and was unrelated to the exposure to inclined trunk postures. Background and Objective: Respiratory diseases are among the most significant causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide, causing substantial strain on society and health systems. Over the last few decades, there has been increasing interest in the automatic analysis of respiratory sounds and electrical impedance tomography (EIT). Nevertheless, no publicly available databases with both respiratory sound and EIT data are available., Methods: In this work, we have assembled the first open-access bimodal database focusing on the differential diagnosis of respiratory diseases (BRACETS: Bimodal Repository of Auscultation Coupled with Electrical Impedance Thoracic Signals). It includes simultaneous recordings of single and multi-channel respiratory sounds and EIT. Furthermore, we have proposed several machine learning-based baseline systems for automatically classifying respiratory diseases in six distinct evaluation tasks using respiratory sound and EIT (A1, A2, A3, B1, B2, B3). These tasks included classifying respiratory diseases at sample and subject levels. The performance of the classification models was evaluated using a 5-fold cross-validation scheme (with subject isolation between folds)., Results: The resulting database consists of 1097 respiratory sounds and 795 EIT recordings acquired from 78 adult subjects in two countries (Portugal and Greece). In the task of automatically classifying respiratory diseases, the baseline classification models have achieved the following average balanced accuracy: Task A1 - 77.9±13.1%; Task A2 - 51.6±9.7%; Task A3 - 38.6±13.1%; Task B1 - 90.0±22.4%; Task B2 - 61.4±11.8%; Task B3 - 50.8±10.6%., Conclusion: The creation of this database and its public release will aid the research community in developing automated methodologies to assess and monitor respiratory function, and it might serve as a benchmark in the field of digital medicine for managing respiratory diseases. Thoracoabdominal asynchrony (TAA), the asynchronous volume changes between the rib cage and abdomen during breathing, is associated with respiratory distress, progressive lung volume loss, and chronic lung disease in the newborn infant. Preterm infants are prone to TAA risk factors such as weak intercostal muscles, surfactant deficiency, and a flaccid chest wall. The causes of TAA in this fragile population are not fully understood and, to date, the assessment of TAA has not included a mechanistic modeling framework to explore the role these risk factors play in breathing dynamics and how TAA can be resolved. We present a dynamic compartmental model of pulmonary mechanics that simulates TAA in the preterm infant under various adverse clinical conditions, including high chest wall compliance, applied inspiratory resistive loads, bronchopulmonary dysplasia, anesthesia-induced intercostal muscle deactivation, weakened costal diaphragm, impaired lung compliance, and upper airway obstruction. Sensitivity analyses performed to screen and rank model parameter influence on model TAA and respiratory volume outputs show that risk factors are additive so that maximal TAA occurs in a virtual preterm infant with multiple adverse conditions, and addressing risk factors individually causes incremental changes in TAA. An abruptly obstructed upper airway caused immediate nearly paradoxical breathing and tidal volume reduction despite greater effort. In most simulations, increased TAA occurred together with decreased tidal volume. Simulated indices of TAA are consistent with published experimental studies and clinically observed pathophysiology, motivating further investigation into the use of computational modeling for assessing and managing TAA. NEW & NOTEWORTHY A novel model of thoracoabdominal asynchrony incorporates literature-derived mechanics and simulates the impact of risk factors on a virtual preterm infant. Sensitivity analyses were performed to determine the influence of model parameters on TAA and respiratory volume. Predicted phase angles are consistent with prior experimental and clinical results, and influential parameters are associated with clinical scenarios that significantly alter phase angle, motivating further investigation into the use of computational modeling for assessing and managing thoracoabdominal asynchrony.

The Warrior Injury Assessment Manikin (WIAMan) anthropomorphic test device (ATD) has been originally developed to predict and prevent injuries for occupants in military vehicles, in an underbody blast environment. However, its crash performance and biofidelity of the thoracic region have not been explored. The aim of this study was to determine and evaluate the WIAMan thoracic responses in a typical frontal sled test. The 40 kph frontal sled tests were conducted to quantify the WIAMan thoracic kinematics, chest deflection, and belt loads. Comparative biofidelities of the WIAMan thorax and other surrogates, including postmortem human surrogates (PMHSs), Hybrid III, and test device for human occupant restraint (THOR) ATDs, were assessed under comparable testing conditions. The similarities and differences between WIAMan and the other surrogates were compared and analyzed, including the motion of bilateral shoulders and T1, time histories of chest deflections, and belt loads. The CORrelation and Analysis (CORA) ratings were used to evaluate the correlations of thoracic responses between the ATDs and PMHS. Compared to the PMHS and THOR, the WIAMan experienced a similar level of left shoulder forward excursions. Larger chest deflection was exhibited in WIAMan throughout the whole duration of belt compression. Differences were found in belt loads between subject types. Overall, WIAMan had slightly lower CORA scores but showed comparable overall performance. The overall thoracic responses of WIAMan under the frontal sled test were more compliant than HIII, but still reasonable compared with PMHS and THOR. Objective: The purpose of this study was to generate biomechanical response corridors of the small female thorax during a frontal hub impact and evaluate scaled corridors that have been used to assess biofidelity of small female anthropomorphic test devices (ATDs) and human body models (HBMs)., Methods: Three small female postmortem human subjects (PMHS) were tested under identical conditions, in which the thorax was impacted using a 14.0 kg pneumatic impactor at an impact velocity of 4.3 m/s. Impact forces to PMHS thoraces were measured using a load cell installed behind a circular impactor face with a 15.2 cm diameter. Thoracic deflections were quantified using a chestband positioned at mid-sternum. Strain gages installed on the ribs and sternum identified fracture timing. Biomechanical response corridors (force-deflection) were generated and compared to scaled small female thoracic corridors using a traditional scaling method (TSM) and rib response-based scaling method (RRSM). A BioRank System Score (BRSS) was used to quantify differences between the small female PMHS data and both scaled corridors., Results: Coefficients of variation from the three small female PMHS responses were less than 2% for peak force and 7% for peak deflection. Overall, the scaled corridor means determined from the TSM and RRSM were less than two standard deviations away from the mean small female PMHS corridors (BRSS < 2.0). The RRSM resulted in smaller deviation (BRSS = 1.1) from the PMHS corridors than the TSM (BRSS = 1.7), suggesting the RRSM is an appropriate scaling method., Conclusions: New small female PMHS force-deflection data are provided in this study. Scaled corridors from the TSM, which have been used to optimize current safety tools, were comparable to the small female PMHS corridors. The RRSM, which has the great benefit of using rib structural properties instead of requiring whole PMHS data, resulted in better agreement with the small female PMHS data than the TSM and deserves further investigation to identify scaling factors for other population demographics.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to provide a whole-body biofidelity assessment of the Hybrid III (HIII) and THOR 50th percentile male anthropomorphic test devices (ATDs) during frontal sled tests, incorporating data from kinematics, chest deflection, and test buck reaction load cells. Additionally, the accuracy of the injury risk prediction capabilities for each ATD was evaluated against injuries observed in matched postmortem human surrogate (PMHS) tests., Methods: Sled tests, designed to simulate a United States New Car Assessment Program (US-NCAP) frontal test, were conducted using the HIII, THOR, and 8 approximately 50th percentile male PMHS under 3 restraint conditions. The test buck was instrumented with load cells on the steering column, knee bolster supports, and foot supports. ATD and PMHS reaction force-time histories were quantitatively compared using the ISO/TS-18571 objective rating metric. Previously published biofidelity analyses of kinematic and chest deflection data from the same tests were combined with the reaction force analyses to perform an overall assessment of the comparative biofidelity of each ATD. Injury risk predictions from existing HIII and proposed THOR injury risk curves for the US-NCAP were compared to observed injuries., Results: For the reaction forces, the HIII and THOR had similar levels of biofidelity on average, except for 2 locations. The HIII produced more biofidelic knee bolster support forces, and the THOR lap belt forces were more biofidelic. The comparative biofidelity of the ATDs also varied by body region. The THOR head response was more biofidelic, whereas the HIII thorax and lower extremity responses had higher biofidelity. When all body regions were pooled, the HIII was more biofidelic, but differences between ATDs were generally small. Both ATDs were able to predict the observed injuries, except for the HIII chest, HIII neck, and THOR neck, all of which underpredicted PMHS injury outcomes., Conclusions: This study revealed that biofidelity assessed through response time histories and accuracy of injury risk predictions do not always align. Specifically, the HIII had marginally better time history biofidelity, whereas the THOR had better injury prediction. However, not all THOR responses could be fully assessed, so more work is needed to assess the THOR in complex loading environments.

The objective of this study was to develop an analytical model using strain-force relationships from individual rib and eviscerated thorax impacts to predict bony thoracic response. Experimental eviscerated thorax forces were assumed to have two distinct responses: an initial inertial response and subsequently, the main response. A second-order mass-spring-damper model was used to characterize the initial inertial response of eviscerated thorax force using impactor kinematics. For the main response, equivalent strains in rib levels 4-7 were mapped at each time point and a strain-based summed force model was constructed using individual rib tests and the same ribs in the eviscerated thorax test. A piecewise approach was developed to join the two components of the curve and solve for mass, damping, stiffness parameters in the initial response, transition point, and scale factor of the strain-based summed force model. The final piecewise model was compared to the overall experimental eviscerated thorax forces for each postmortem human subjects (PMHS) (n = 5) and resulted in R2 values of 0.87-0.96. A bootstrapping approach was utilized to validate the model. Final model predictions for the validation subjects were compared with the corridors constructed for the eviscerated thorax tests. Biofidelity ranking system score (BRSS) values were approximately 0.71 indicating that this approach can predict eviscerated responses within one standard deviation from the mean response. This model can be expanded to other tissue states by quantifying soft tissue and visceral contributions, therefore successfully establishing a link between individual rib tests and whole thoracic response., (Copyright © 2022 by ASME.)

During respiration, the expansion and contraction of the chest and abdomen are coupled with each other, presenting a complex torso movement pattern. A finite element (FE) model of chest breathing based on the HUMOS2 human body model was developed. One-dimensional muscle units with active contraction functions were incorporated into the model based on Hill's active muscle model so as to generate muscle contraction forces that can change over time. The model was validated by comparing it to the surface displacement of the chest and abdomen during respiration. Then, the mechanism of the coupled motion of the chest and abdomen was analyzed. The analyses revealed that since the abdominal wall muscles are connected to the lower edge of the rib cage through tendons, the movement of the rib cage may cause the abdominal wall muscles to be stretched in both horizontal and vertical in a supine position. The anteroposterior and the right-left diameters of the chest will increase at inspiration, while the right-left diameter of the abdomen will decrease even though the anteroposterior diameter of the abdomen increases. The external intercostal muscles at different regions had different effects on the motion of the ribs during respiration. In particular, the external intercostal muscles at the lateral region had a larger effect on pump handle movement than bucket handle movement, and the external intercostal muscles at the dorsal region had a greater influence on bucket handle movement than pump handle movement., (Copyright © 2022 by ASME.)

Surgical resection of chest wall tumours may lead to a loss of ribcage stability and requires reconstruction to allow for physical thorax functioning. When titanium implants are used especially for larger, lateral defects, they tend to break. Implant failures are mainly due to specific mechanical requirements for chest-wall reconstruction which must mimic the physiological properties and which are not yet met by available implants. In order to develop new implants, the mechanical characteristics of ribs, joints and cartilages are investigated. Rib loading is highly dependent on the global thorax kinematics, making implant development substantially challenging. Costal cartilage contributes vastly to the entire thorax load-deformation behaviour, and also to rib loading patterns. Computational models of the thoracic cage require mechanical properties on the global stiffness, to simulate rib kinematics and evaluate stresses in the ribs and costal cartilage. In this study the mechanical stiffness of human costal cartilage is assessed with bending, torsion and tensile tests. The elastic moduli for the bending in four major directions ranged from 2.2 to 60.8 MPa, shear moduli ranged from 5.7 to 24.7 MPa for torsion, and tensile elastic moduli ranging from 5.6 to 29.6 MPa. This article provides mechanical properties for costal cartilage. Respiratory muscle paralysis caused by acute cervical spinal cord injury usually leads to pulmonary ventilation dysfunction and even death from respiratory failure. In addition to invasive treatments such as mechanical ventilation, the utilization of noninvasive respiratory support equipment plays an important role in long-term assisted breathing. In this study, we describes a wearable, noninvasive vest with adjustable pressure that enables assisted breathing and with an automatic alarm, and we aims to explore its safety and effectiveness on healthy adult participants. The vest monitors the human heart rate and the blood oxygen index data in real time, the alarm is automatically activated when the data is abnormal. Eight healthy participants had no obvious discomfort during the test while wearing the vest. Lung volumes, antero-posterior diameters, and left-right diameters at the second, fourth, and sixth ribs levels were acquired before and after inflation of the vest airbag, the data acquired by the imaging analysis using chest computed tomography showed significant differences before and after the inflation ( p < 0.05). Thus, The vest designed for this study can achieve uniform and effective compression of the thorax, significantly changed the size of the thorax and lungs. It is expected to be applied as noninvasive support for patients with respiratory dysfunction.

Chest compression is a parameter of injury criteria assessment for human beings. Additionally, it is used to find the external compression response as a result of vehicle crashes, falls, or sporting impacts. This behavioral feature is described by many deterministic models related to specific experimental tests, hindering distinct scenarios. The present study evaluates the energy absorbed as a function of rib compression. The proposed model was obtained from three different computed tomography (CT) studies. The anthropometric values are interpolated to obtain a parametric curve for a human rib's average size. The computed results are compared against an STL-DICOM ® file used to obtain a virtual reconstruction of one rib. A numerical model of the behavior of the thorax displacement expressed injury in the human rib model's stiffness. The proposed model is used to determine the correlation of the input payload versus the numerical stiffness value. The outcome is confirmed by numerical analyses applied to a virtual human rib reconstruction.

Previous work has identified that individuals adopt different dynamic lumbar spine stability responses when experiencing back muscle fatigue, and that the neuromuscular system adjusts multi-joint coordination in response to fatigue. Therefore, this study was designed to determine whether distinct differences in coordination and coordination variability would be observed for those who stabilize, destabilize, or demonstrate no change in dynamic stability when their back muscles are fatigued. Thirty participants completed two repetitive trunk flexion-extension trials (Rested, Fatigued) during which lumbar flexion-extension dynamic stability, thorax-pelvis movement coordination, and coupling angle variability (CAV) were assessed. Dynamic stability was evaluated using maximum Lyapunov exponents (λ max ) with participants being allotted to stabilizer, destabilizer, or no change groups based on their stability response to fatigue. Each flexion-extension repetition was further segregated into two phases (flexion, extension) and vector coding analyses were implemented to determine thorax-pelvis coordination and CAV during each movement phase. Results demonstrated that when fatigued, ∼30% of individuals adopted more stable (lower λ max ) flexion-extension movements and greater CAV during the extension phase, ∼17% of individuals became less stable (higher λ max ) and exhibited decreased CAV during the extension phase, and the remaining ∼53% of individuals expressed no change in dynamic stability or CAV. Additionally, more in-phase coordination patterns were generally observed across all individuals when fatigued. Background: Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) circulation in the brain has garnered considerable attention in recent times. In contrast, there have been fewer studies focused on the spine, despite the expected importance of CSF circulation in disorders specific to the spine, including syringomyelia. The driving forces that regulate spinal CSF flow are not well defined and are likely to be different to the brain given the anatomical differences and proximity to the heart and lungs. The aims of this study were to determine the effects of heart rate, blood pressure and respiration on the distribution of CSF tracers in the spinal subarachnoid space, as well as into the spinal cord interstitium., Methods: In Sprague Dawley rats, physiological parameters were manipulated such that the effects of spontaneous breathing (generating alternating positive and negative intrathoracic pressures), mechanical ventilation (positive intrathoracic pressure only), tachy/bradycardia, as well as hyper/hypotension were separately studied. To investigate spinal CSF hydrodynamics, in vivo near-infrared imaging of intracisternally infused indocyanine green was performed. CSF tracer transport was further characterised with in vivo two-photon intravital imaging. Tracer influx at a microscopic level was quantitatively characterised by ex vivo epifluorescence imaging of fluorescent ovalbumin., Results: Compared to mechanically ventilated controls, spontaneous breathing animals had significantly greater movement of tracer in the subarachnoid space. There was also greater influx into the spinal cord interstitium. Hypertension and tachycardia had no significant effect on spinal subarachnoid spinal CSF tracer flux and exerted less effect than respiration on tracer influx into the spinal cord., Conclusions: Intrathoracic pressure changes that occur over the respiratory cycle, particularly decreased intrathoracic pressures generated during inspiration, have a profound effect on tracer movement after injection into spinal CSF and increase cord parenchymal tracer influx. Arterial pulsations likely drive fluid transport from perivascular spaces into the surrounding interstitium, but their overall impact is less than that of the respiratory cycle on net tracer influx., (© 2022. Objectives: The exhaled CO 2 signal provides guidance during cardiopulmonary resuscitation. The Airway opening index (AOI) has been recently used to quantify chest-compression (CC) induced expired CO 2 oscillations. We aimed to determine whether levels of intrathoracic pressures developed during CC or parameters related to lung structure may affect AOI., Methods: Secondary analysis of a randomized animal study (n = 12) in a porcine model of cardiac arrest (CA) and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) during ambulance transport. Animals were randomized to 18-min of manual or mechanical CCs. Changes in AOI and right atrial pressure (ΔRAP) were recorded during CCs in animals undergoing manual (n = 6) or mechanical (n = 6) CCs. Lung CT scan and measurement of the respiratory system compliance (Cpl,rs) were performed immediately after return of spontaneous circulation., Results: Animals undergoing mechanical CCs had a lower AOI compared to animals treated with manual CCs (p < 0.001). AOI negatively correlated with the swings of intrathoracic pressure, as measured by the change in ΔRAP (ρ=-0.727, p = 0.007). AOI correlated with the lung density (ρ=-0.818, p = 0.001) and with the Cpl,rs (ρ = 0.676, p = 0.016). Animals with cardiopulmonary resuscitation associated lung edema (CRALE) (i.e. mean CT≥-500 HU) showed lower levels of AOI compared to animals without it (29 ± 12 % versus 50 ± 16 %, p = 0.025)., Conclusions: Animals undergoing mechanical CCs had lower levels of AOI compared to animals undergoing manual CCs. Objective: The objective of the study was to investigate the difference between elderly and young occupant injury risks using human body finite element modeling in frontal impacts., Methods: Two elderly male occupant models (representative age 70-80 years) were developed using the Global Human Body Consortium (GHBMC) 50th percentile as the baseline model. In the first elderly model (EM-1), material property changes were incorporated, and in the second elderly model (EM-2), material and anthropometric changes were incorporated. Material properties were based on literature. The baseline model was morphed to elderly anthropometry for EM-2. The three models were simulated in a frontal crash vehicle environment at 56 km/h. Responses from the two elderly and baseline models were compared with cadaver experimental data in thoracic, abdominal, and frontal impacts. Correlation and analysis scores were used for correlation with experimental data. The probabilities of head, neck, and thoracic injuries were assessed., Results: The elderly models showed a good correlation with experimental responses. The elderly EM-1 had higher risk of head and brain injuries compared to the elderly EM-2 and baseline GHBMC models. The elderly EM-2 demonstrated higher risk of neck, chest, and abdominal injuries than the elderly EM-1 and baseline models., Conclusions: The study investigated injury risks of two elderly occupants and compared to a young occupant in frontal crashes. The change in the material properties alone (EM-1) suggested that elderly occupants may be vulnerable to a greater risk of head and thoracic injuries, whereas change in both anthropometric and material properties (EM-2) suggested that elderly occupants may be vulnerable to a greater risk of thoracic and neck injuries. The second elderly model results were in better agreement with field injury data from the literature; thus, both anthropometric and material properties should be considered when assessing the injury risks of elderly occupants. The elderly models developed in this study can be used to simulate different impact conditions and determine injury risks for this group of our population.

Purpose: The purpose of this work was to understand the biomechanical response and injury risk of thorax and abdomen of vehicle front seat occupants caused by seat belt load under different frontal crash pulses., Methods: A vehicle-seat-occupant subsystem finite element (FE) model was developed using the a assembly of vehicle front seat and seat belt together with the THUMS (Total Human body Model for Safety) AM50 (50th% Adult Male) occupant model. Then the typical vehicle frontal crash pulses from different impact scenarios were applied to the vehicle-seat-occupant subsystem FE model, and the predictions from the occupant model were analyzed., Results: The modeling results indicate that the maximum sternal compression of the occupant caused by seat belt load is not sensitive to the peek of the crash pulse but sensitive to the energy contained by the crash pulse in the phrase before seat belt load reaching its limit. Injury risk analysis implies that seat belt load of the four crash scenarios considered in the current work could induce a high thorax AIS2+ injury risk (>80%) to the occupants older than 70 years, and a potential injury risk to the spleen., Conclusions: The findings suggest that control of the energy in the first 75 ms of the crash pulse is crucial for vehicle safety design, and thorax tolerance of the older population and spleen injury prevention are the key considerations in developing of seat belt system.

Organismic, task, and environmental constraints are known to differ between skilled male and female cricket batters during power hitting tasks. Despite these influences, the techniques used in such tasks have only been investigated in male cricket batters. This study compared power hitting kinematics between 15 male and 15 female batters ranging from university to international standard. General linear models were used to assess the effect of gender on kinematic parameters describing technique, with height and body mass as covariates. Male batters generated greater maximum bat speeds, ball launch speeds, and ball carry distances than female batters on average. Male batters had greater pelvis-thorax separation in the transverse plane at the commencement of the downswing (β = 1.14; p = 0.030) and extended their lead elbows more during the downswing (β = 1.28; p = 0.008) compared to female batters. The hypothesised effect of gender on the magnitude of wrist uncocking during the downswing was not observed (β = -0.14; p = 0.819). The causes of these differences are likely to be multi-factorial, involving aspects relating to the individual players, their history of training experiences and coaching practices, and the task of power hitting in male or female cricket.

The spinal cord receives input from peripheral sensory neurons and controls motor output by regulating muscle innervating motor neurons. These functions are carried out by neural circuits comprising molecularly distinct neuronal subtypes generated in a characteristic spatiotemporal arrangement from progenitors in the embryonic neural tube. To gain insight into the diversity and complexity of cells in the developing human neural tube, we used single-cell mRNA sequencing to profile cervical and thoracic regions in four human embryos of Carnegie stages (CS) CS12, CS14, CS17 and CS19 from gestational weeks 4-7. Analysis of progenitor and neuronal populations from the neural tube and dorsal root ganglia identified dozens of distinct cell types and facilitated the reconstruction of the differentiation pathways of specific neuronal subtypes. Comparison with mouse revealed overall similarity of mammalian neural tube development while highlighting some human-specific features. These data provide a catalogue of gene expression and cell type identity in the human neural tube that will support future studies of sensory and motor control systems. Sustainability in livestock farming requires monitoring of autochthonous breeds which are well adapted to the local environment. The morphometric measurements seem to be the first approach which can provide useful information on the suitability of animal genetic resources for selection. In this work, thirteen morphometric variables were used for the phenotypic characterization of 130 adult autochthones cattle randomly selected from 30 local farms in Guelma. There were cases from four commonly accepted and traditional ecotypes: Guelmois, Cheurfa, Sétifien and Fawn. The results showed several and significant positive correlations between the different variables. Correlations were analyzed using Varimax orthogonal rotation PCA and three factors were extracted, which explain more than 75% of the total variation in the four ecotypes. Stepwise discriminant analysis showed that 6 of the 13 variables had discriminatory power to define the phenotypic profile of the ecotypes. Canonical discriminant analysis indicated that the Sétifien ecotype is separate from the other three ecotypes. Mahalanobis distances were significant between the different ecotypes except for the distance between the Guelmois and Fawn ecotypes. The cross-validation procedure assigned 91.42% of the Sétifien animals to their genetic group, while the percentages of animals assigned to the Cheurfa, Guelmois and Fawn ecotypes were 80.00%, 65.71% and 53.33% respectively. The multivariate approach has proven to be effective in differentiating the four ecotypes, with clear morphological differences from the Sétifien ecotype that may benefit from a genetic improvement program for more sustainable genetic resources preservation., Competing Interests: The authors declare no potential conflicts of interest.

Climate change is an important driver of bee decline despite the fact that many species might respond to climate change differently. One method to predict how a species will respond to climate change is to identify its thermal tolerance limits. However, differences in thermal tolerance might also occur among distant populations of the same species based on their local environment or even among castes of social insects. Here, we investigated intraspecific differences in thermal tolerance among subspecies of the large earth bumble bee, Bombus terrestris (Apidae). We determined the critical thermal minima and maxima (CT min and CT max , respectively) of workers and queens from three lab-reared B. terrestris subspecies (B. t. terrestris, B. t. audax, and B. t. canariensis) which originated from different thermal environments. Our results showed that caste has an influence on critical thermal minima, with queens being most cold-tolerant, but the values of critical thermal maxima were not correlated to caste or size. The thermal tolerance of workers did not differ among the subspecies. Although heat tolerance was similar in queens, B. t. canariensis queens (originating from the warmest environments) were the least cold tolerant. Overall, we showed that B. terrestris may be generally robust against climate warming, but that particular subspecies and/or populations may be more vulnerable to extreme temperature variability. High-level dressage horses regularly perform advanced movements, requiring coordination and force transmission between front and hind limbs across the thoracolumbosacral region. This study aimed at quantifying kinematic differences in dressage horses when ridden in sitting trot-i.e. with additional load applied in the thoracolumbar region-compared with trotting in-hand. Inertial sensors were glued on to the midline of the thoracic (T) and lumbar (L) spine at T5, T13, T18, L3 and middle of the left and right tubera sacrale of ten elite dressage horses (Mean±SD), age 11±1 years, height 1.70±0.10m and body mass 600±24kg; first trotted in-hand, then ridden in sitting trot on an arena surface by four Grand Prix dressage riders. Straight-line motion cycles were analysed using a general linear model (random factor: horse; fixed factor: exercise condition; covariate: stride time, Bonferroni post hoc correction: P<0.05). Differential roll, pitch and yaw angles between adjacent sensors were calculated. In sitting trot, compared to trotting in-hand, there was increased pitch (mean±S.D), (in-hand, 3.9 (0.5°, sitting trot 6.3 (0.3°, P = <0.0001), roll (in-hand, 7.7 (1.1°, sitting trot 11.6 (0.9°, P = 0.003) and heading values (in-hand, 4.2 (0.8), sitting trot 9.5 (0.6°, P = <0.0001) in the caudal thoracic and lumbar region (T18-L3) and a decrease in heading values (in-hand, 7.1 (0.5°, sitting trot 5.2 (0.3°, P = 0.01) in the cranial thoracic region (T5-T13). Kinematics of the caudal thoracic and lumbar spine are influenced by the rider when in sitting trot, whilst lateral bending is reduced in the cranial thoracic region. Acoustic signals that reliably indicate body size, which usually determines competitive ability, are of particular interest for understanding how animals assess rivals and choose mates. Whereas body size tends to be negatively associated with formant dispersion in animal vocalizations, non-vocal signals have received little attention. Among the most emblematic sounds in the animal kingdom is the chest beat of gorillas, a non-vocal signal that is thought to be important in intra and inter-sexual competition, yet it is unclear whether it reliably indicates body size. We examined the relationship among body size (back breadth), peak frequency, and three temporal characteristics of the chest beat: duration, number of beats and beat rate from sound recordings of wild adult male mountain gorillas. Using linear mixed models, we found that larger males had significantly lower peak frequencies than smaller ones, but we found no consistent relationship between body size and the temporal characteristics measured. Taken together with earlier findings of positive correlations among male body size, dominance rank and reproductive success, we conclude that the gorilla chest beat is an honest signal of competitive ability. These results emphasize the potential of non-vocal signals to convey important information in mammal communication.

Analyses of segment kinetic energy (KE) can provide the most appropriate means of exploring sequential movements. As the reliability associated with its measurement has not been reported, the aim of this study was to examine the test-retest reliability of segment KE measures in the golf swing. On two occasions, seven male golfers hit five shots with three different clubs. Body segment inertia parameters were estimated for 17 rigid bodies and 3D kinematic data were collected during each swing. The magnitude and timing of peak total, linear and angular kinetic energies were then calculated for each rigid body and for four segment groups. Regardless of club type, KE was measured with high reliability for almost all rigid bodies and segment groups. However, significantly larger magnitudes of peak total ( p  = 0.039) and linear ( p  = 0.021) lower body KE were reported in test 2 than in test 1. The high reliability reported in this study provides support for the use of analyses of segment kinetic energy. However, practitioners should pay careful attention to the identification of anatomical landmarks which define the thigh, pelvis and thorax as this was the main cause of variability in repeated measures of segment kinetic energy.

Background: Previous thorax models have been proposed for gait analysis, however these require markers to be placed on the back. This presents a limitation in the kinematic analysis of the thorax under load carriage conditions., Research Question: This study evaluated the validity and reliability of a thorax marker set that does not require markers to be placed on the back (HubemaLab model) when compared to 3 previously published marker set models., Methods: 17 young adults were evaluated while walking at their self-selected speed. A 12 camera motion capture system was used to acquire the marker position data which was then processed using the respective models using Visual-3D. The level of agreement for the flexion/extension peak, right/left lateral peak and right/left rotation peak of the thorax angle and angular velocity; together with the range of motion and thorax angular velocities in the three planes was found between each thorax marker set, while the reliability was measured using the intraclass correlation coefficient., Results: The ICC results for the thorax angle ROM and the range of thorax angular velocity between the HubemaLab model and the other models showed excellent to good reliability in all three planes. While the ICCs for the peak flexion/extension, peak right/left lateral flexion and peak right/left rotation showed excellent to moderate reliability in all three planes., Conclusion: The new model could be potentially valuable for kinematic gait analysis under load carriage conditions which obscure markers placed on the back., (Copyright © 2021 by ASME.)

Respiratory approaches to determining cardiac output in humans are securely rooted in mass balance and therefore potentially highly accurate. To address existing limitations in the gas analysis, we developed an in-airway analyser based on laser absorption spectroscopy to provide analyses every 10 ms. The technique for estimating cardiac output requires both a relatively soluble and insoluble tracer gas, and we employed acetylene and methane for these, respectively. A multipass cell was used to provide sufficient measurement sensitivity to enable analysis directly within the main gas stream, thus avoiding errors introduced by sidestream gas analysis. To assess performance, measurements of cardiac output were made during both rest and exercise on five successive days in each of six volunteers. The measurements were extremely repeatable (coefficient of variation ~ 7%). This new measurement technology provides a stable foundation against which the algorithm to calculate cardiac output can be further developed.

The tennis serve generates high musculoskeletal loads at the shoulder complex, making athletes particularly vulnerable to chronic injuries, especially adolescent players. Chronic injuries are commonly related to altered scapular kinematics. This study explored the effects of a history of shoulder problems involving humerothoracic and scapulothoracic kinematics during the tennis serve at low speed in adolescent competitive players with and without a history of dominant shoulder problems. Totally, 28 adolescent tennis players were split into two groups, those with and those without a history of shoulder problems. Data on humeral and scapular kinematics relative to the thorax were collected using an electromagnetic system during slow velocity serves. The two groups's humerothoracic and scapulothoracic 3D joint angles were compared both at the end of the cocking phase and at the end of the acceleration phase of the tennis serve. At the end of the cocking phase, the players with a 30 history of shoulder problems showed less humeral abduction and external rotation and more scapular upward rotation. This group also showed less humeral abduction at the end of the acceleration phase. Players with a history of shoulder problems adapted their humerothoracic and scapulothoracic orientations to preserve shoulder integrity during the tennis serve.

Objective: To evaluate the influence of manual therapy of the chest and diaphragm on the spirometry parameters in patients with cerebral palsy (CP)., Method: The study was carried out on 20 youths with CP. All participated in 6 sessions (3 sham and 3 actual), with measurements of spirometry at baseline, postsham therapies 1 and 3, before actual therapy, and postactual therapy sessions 1 and 3. Two manual techniques were included: soft tissue mobilization of the chest and the diaphragm., Results: After the first actual therapy, there was a significant ( p < 0.01) improvement in forced vital capacity (FVC) by 0.23 L (8% of the average predicted value) and forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV 1 ) by 0.18 L (7% of the average predicted value) as compared to results before the therapy. Change in FVC parameter was clinically significant, whereas change in FEV 1 was not clinically significant. Mosquitoes are regarded as one of the most dangerous animals on earth. Because they are responsible for the spread of a wide range of both human and animal pathogens, research of the underlying mechanisms of their feeding behavior and physiology is critical. Among disease vector mosquitoes, Culex quinquefasciatus, a known carrier of West Nile virus and Western Equine Encephalitis, remains relatively understudied. As blood-sucking insects, adaptations (either at the molecular or physiological level) while feeding on warm blood are crucial to their survival, as overheating can result in death due to heat stress. Our research aims to determine how Cx. quinquefasciatus copes with the heat associated with warm blood meal ingestion and possibly uncover the adaptations this species uses to avoid thermal stress. Through the use of thermographic imaging, we analyzed the body temperature of Cx. quinquefasciatus while blood feeding. Infrared thermography has allowed us to identify a cooling strategy, evaporative cooling via the production of fluid droplets, and an overall low body temperature in comparison to the blood temperature during feeding. Understanding Cx. quinquefasciatus' adaptations and the strategies they employ to reduce their body temperature while blood feeding constitutes the first step towards discovering potential targets that could be used for their control., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier Ltd. Previous studies indicate that seatbelts may require supplementary restraints to increase their effectiveness in far-side impacts. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a novel, far-side-specific airbag in restraining and preventing injuries in far-side impacts, and to evaluate the WorldSID's response to the presence of a far-side airbag. A series of tests with three Post-Mortem Human Subjects and the WorldSID was conducted in a vehicle-based sled environment equipped with a far-side airbag. Results of these tests were evaluated and compared to a previous test series conducted without the airbag. All of the PMHS retained the shoulder belt on the shoulder. The airbag significantly reduced PMHS injury severity and maximum lateral head excursion. While the WorldSID exhibited a similar decrease in lateral excursion, it was unable to represent PMHS thoracic deflection or injury probability, and it consistently slipped out of the shoulder belt. This indicates that the WorldSID is limited both in its ability to evaluate the effect of changes in the seatbelt system and in its ability to predict thoracic injury risk and assess airbag-related injury mitigation countermeasures.

Although school trolleys are an alternative to traditional backpacks, no studies have determined their suitability for children of different heights. This study aims to analyse the fit of a school trolley (0.89 m height from the top to the bottom of the handle) for children with different heights based on kinematic variables and the rate of perceived effort (RPE). A 3D motion capture system was used to analyse the kinematics of the thorax and hip during walking without load and when pulling a trolley loaded with 15% of the child's body weight (BW). The RPE was recorded at the end of each trial. The height of the subjects was clustered using Ward´s hierarchical cluster, and two groups were identified: Group 1: 120-139.9 cm; and Group 2: 140-160 cm. No differences were found between groups in the kinematics or RPE. In conclusion, a standard school trolley fits well to children with heights from 120 to 160 cm. Practitioner Summary: No studies have determined the suitability of school trolleys for children of different heights. This study aims to analyse the fit of a school trolley for children with different heights based on the kinematics and rate of perceived effort. The major finding is that a standard school trolley fits children with heights from 120 to 160 cm well and that the height of the school trolley was between 59% and 68% of the children's heights. Objectives: Increased sympathetic stimulation in smokers may be a risk factor for pulmonary and cardiovascular diseases. This study was conducted to assess the immediate effect of interscapular cupping on blood pressure (BP), oxygen (O 2 ) saturation, chest expansion (CE), pulse rate (PR) in sedentary male smoker students., Methods: Forty sedentary male smoker students- aged 18-25 years -were divided randomly into two equal numbered groups; wet cupping (WC) and dry cupping (DC) groups. Systolic and diastolic BP, upper and lower CE, O 2 saturation and PR were measured immediately before and after a single cupping session in both groups., Results: Both WC and DC types showed improvements in all measurements with a high statistically significant difference (p<0.05)., Conclusions: Interscapular cupping enhanced CE, O 2 saturation, BP and PR in sedentary male smoker students., (© 2021 Walter de Gruyter GmbH, Berlin/Boston.)

Objectives: The objective was to understand how the use or nonuse of the Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children (LATCH) system affects the performance of booster seats during frontal impacts., Methods: Sixteen frontal impact sled tests were conducted at 24.8 ± 0.3 g and 50.1 ± 0.2 kph. A production vehicle seat buck was attached to the sled. Four high-back boosters or combination seats in high-back booster mode and two backless booster models were tested. Each booster model was installed two different ways: using the LATCH system ("LATCH" installation) and without using the LATCH system ("non-LATCH" installation). All installations used a 3-point seat belt with retractor in emergency locking mode (ELR) to restrain a Hybrid III 6-year-old anthropomorphic test device (ATD). The retractor, belt webbing, buckle, vehicle seat cushion, and booster were replaced after each test. Some conditions were tested twice to establish repeatability. ATD and booster responses were compared between LATCH and non-LATCH tests., Results: Using LATCH reduced the forward movement of the booster itself by 32.3% to 71.5% compared to non-LATCH installations. Differences in most other metrics were small and often within the range of normal test-to-test variation. Forward movements of the ATD head and heel were similar between LATCH and non-LATCH tests (typically less than 10% difference). HIC36 values trended slightly higher for LATCH installations compared to non-LATCH installations (0.8% to 17.2%). Chest resultant accelerations were typically 7.3% to 21.2% higher for LATCH installations, except for one booster for which it was lower with LATCH. Chest deflections trended higher for LATCH installations compared to non-LATCH installations for the backless boosters (6.9% to 14.1%). For high-back boosters, chest deflection was similar between installation conditions (less than 5% difference). Shoulder belt loads showed the greatest reductions when LATCH installations included a top tether (12.9% to 20.8%). Instances of the ATD submarining under the lap belt were not observed in these tests., Conclusions: Overall, the differences in kinematics and injury metrics were small between boosters installed using LATCH vs. non-LATCH.

Purpose: Intrusion of the occupant compartment increases the risks for severe injury and death. This study analyzes rear sled and crash tests with an instrumented second-row Hybrid III 5 th percentile anthropometric test device (ATD) to assess occupant kinematics and biomechanical responses with and without intrusion of the second-row seatback., Methods: Three sled tests and four crash tests were conducted with a 1993 Ford Taurus and a belted 5 th female ATD seated behind a belted 50 th male ATD on the right-side of the vehicle. The sled tests were conducted at 25, 33 and 40 km/h and involved no intrusion. The first crash test was conducted with a passenger car striking the vehicle at 80 km/h with full centerline overlap. The second to fourth crash tests were with a Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) striking with a 50% overlap. Tests 2 and 3 were at 51 km/h and test 4, at 80 km/h impact speed. A large wooden speaker box was placed in the trunk of the Taurus in tests 3 and 4. Second-row intrusion was measured at the right-rear outboard package shelf retractor., Results: The sled tests without intrusion had occupant responses below injury assessment reference values (IARVs). The right second-row ATD moved rearward relative to the interior, compressing the rear seatback until it rebounded forward. Occupant compartment intrusion of 12-77 cm in the crash tests pushed the ATD forward, increasing head and chest acceleration. The head, neck and chest biomechanical responses were below IARVs in crash tests 1 to 3 with minimal intrusion (≤ 25 cm). Most of the biomechanical responses were above IARVs for the right second-row ATD in test 4 with higher intrusion. The HIC increased with intrusion. Head acceleration was more than 2.5-times greater in test 3 than in test 2, highlighting the importance of cargo in rear crashes. Test 4 had 2.4-times more energy than test 3 and up to 7.7 times greater biomechanical responses with 77 cm of intrusion., Conclusions: The crash tests show that intrusion increases occupant responses in the right second-row seat and pushes the occupant forward in rear impacts. The sled tests without intrusion had relatively low biomechanical responses. Intrusion was influenced by the crash energy and cargo.

Objectives: The objective of this study was to reanalyze lateral postmortem human surrogate (PMHS) sled test chestband data to construct updated lateral thoracic injury risk curves (IRCs) using survival analysis., Methods: Chestband and injury data were gathered from 16 previously conducted PMHS sled tests. Briefly, 2 chestbands were wrapped around the thorax's circumference at the levels of ribs 4 and 8. Tests were conducted at 6.7 m/s on a rigid and padded load wall fixed to the top of a rebound sled. The injuries were reclassified using the Abbreviated Injury Scale (AIS) 2015 coding scheme. Chestband signals were combined with pretest specimen measurements to calculate the chest deflection contour time history. Deflections were determined using updated processing techniques calculating the change in length of every point on the contour from the impacted side using the thorax's midpoint as the origin. Four candidate metrics were selected: the deflection from rib 4, the deflection from rib 8, the greater of the deflections from ribs 4 and 8, and the average of the deflections from ribs 4 and 8. AIS 3+ IRCs were developed considering outcomes of AIS ≥3 injuries. All injury data were uncensored, and noninjury data were right-censored. Three specimen mass-based IRCs were determined using the IRC with the lowest Brier score metric (BSM): The first corresponded to the 5th percentile female mass (49 kg), the second to the 50th percentile male mass (77 kg), and the third to the average mass of the PMHS ensemble (65 kg)., Results: Sixteen PMHS were used in the current study. Six specimens were right-censored, and 10 were uncensored. The average metric had the lowest BSM, and mass was a significant covariate with 50% risk of AIS3+ injury at 72mm of chest deflection. The 50% risk deflection magnitudes for the 5th percentile female (49 kg), 50th percentile male (77 kg), and PMHS ensemble (PMHS-E) (65 kg) were 59, 81, and 71 mm. IRCs for the 4 metrics and the 3 occupant masses are given., Conclusions: IRCs were developed using survival analysis, and the average of the peak deflections was found to best represent the thoracic chest deflection response. Mass-based side impact IRCs were calculated for occupants representing the WorldSID 5th percentile female and 50th percentile male anthropomorphic test device.

Objective: This study compared dummy kinematics and biomechanical responses with and without retractor pretensioning in a severe rear sled test. It compliments an earlier study with buckle pretensioning., Methods: Three rear tests were run at 40 km/h (25 mph) delta V with a lap-shoulder belted Hybrid III 50 th male dummy on a 2013-18 Ford Escape driver seat and belt restraint. One test was with the lap-shoulder belts only, a second with retractor and anchor pretensioning and a third with only retractor pretensioning. The head, chest and pelvis were instrumented with triaxial accelerometers. The upper and lower neck, thoracic spine and lumbar spine had transducers measuring triaxial loads and moments. Lap belt load was measured. High-speed video recorded different views of the dummy motion. Dummy kinematics and biomechanical responses were compared to determine the influence of retractor belt pretensioning., Results: The dummy kinematics and biomechanical responses were essentially similar with and without retractor or retractor and anchor pretensioning in rear sled tests. There was an initial spike in lap belt load with pretensioning, but it did not result in different dummy head, neck or chest responses. In the tests, the dummy moved rearward away from the shoulder belt. The belts were tightened with the rapid pull on the webbing by pretensioning. The dummy loaded the seat, which yielded rearward restraining its motion. There was no significant effect of pretensioning on the dynamics of the dummy until late in rebound., Conclusions: There were no significant differences in dynamics of the Hybrid III with and without retractor or retractor and anchor pretensioning in a 40 km/h (25 mph) rear sled test. Belt pretensioning did not influence biomechanical responses in the rear impact because the seat supported the dummy.

Objective: Our objective was to study the effect on child occupant kinematics and loading by differences in booster cushion designs and attachment in a frontal impact., Methods: Three different booster cushion designs were exposed to a frontal impact in vehicle rear seat interiors. The boosters were selected based on their difference in shape, stiffness, and guiding loop design. Tests were run varying the shoulder belt routing above or under the guiding loop, in addition to with or without attachment of the booster cushion to the vehicle ISOFIX anchorages. Eighteen simulations with the finite element PIPER 6-year-old human body model (HBM) were run investigating all combinations of parameters, in addition to 3 sled tests with a Q10 anthropomorphic test dummy (ATD)., Results: Across 2 different child sizes, using an HBM and an ATD, respectively, consistent sensitivity to the booster design differences were seen. Boosters providing similar initial static belt fit can result in different occupant responses during a crash, due to the design of the boosters and their dynamic performance. Compression of the booster cushion resulted in a delayed pelvis restraint, influencing the upper body kinematics. The guiding loop design as well as the belt routing above or under the guide also influenced the upper body kinematics and shoulder belt interaction., Conclusions: Early pelvis coupling to initiate torso pitch, and thereby an upper torso motion controlled by the shoulder belt, is the preferred occupant protection for booster-seated children. A stable mid-shoulder belt position centered over the chest initially is a prerequisite. Additionally, it was seen that the design of the guiding loops helps provide favorable interaction with the torso during the crash. The option to allow the shoulder belt to be placed above and under the guiding loops will accommodate a larger span of child sizes and adapt to more vehicle seat belt geometries. This study provides evidence that the design of the booster cushion plays an important role in creating an early pelvis coupling, as well as supporting favorable torso-shoulder belt interaction.

Objective: The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of chin-to-chest contact on upper neck axial force in United Nations (UN) Regulation No. 129 frontal impact tests of child restraint systems., Methods: Frontal impact pilot experiments were carried out according to the test procedure in UN Regulation No. 129. Q-Series child dummies were seated in a small convenience sample of forward-facing child restraint systems. The timing and duration of chin-to-chest contact were determined using the procedure for calculating external head impact force in SAE J2052., Results: Chin-to-chest contact was observed in all of our experiments and generated a tensile peak in the upper neck axial force of the Q-Series dummies. Prior to chin-to-chest contact, a purely inertial, noncontact peak was observed in the axial tension force. The tensile peak due to chin-to-chest contact was often greater than the inertial, noncontact peak force., Conclusions: Chin-to-chest contact can increase axial neck tension force beyond the level it would reach under purely inertial loading. Adopting upper neck axial force in regulation, without considering how the force is generated, might encourage child restraint designs that mitigate only chin-to-chest contact, rather than the true inertial neck loading.

Background: Although humans spend most of their day in a standing or sitting position, it is difficult to accurately evaluate the alignment of the shoulder girdle during daily activity, and its alignment changes between positions. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the 3-dimensional alignment of the shoulder girdle in the supine and standing positions by computed tomography (CT) and to assess the alignment changes of the shoulder girdle between these two positions., Methods: CT scans of both shoulders of 100 healthy volunteers were prospectively taken in both supine and standing positions on the same day. The local 3-dimensional coordinate systems of the thorax, clavicle, and scapula were defined from the specific bony landmarks, and 3-dimensional angular rotations and positions of the clavicle and scapula were calculated. Differences in rotations and positions of the clavicle and scapula were evaluated between the supine and standing positions., Results: Compared with the supine position, the clavicle showed significantly less elevation and greater retraction, and the scapula showed significantly less upward rotation, anterior tilting, and internal rotation in the standing position. Compared with the supine position, the clavicle center was located more inferiorly, posteriorly, and laterally, and the scapula center was located more inferiorly, posteriorly, and medially in the standing position., Conclusions: The present study showed that angular rotations and positions of the clavicle and scapula change significantly with position due to the effect of gravity.
