The authors argue that laws allowing interracial adoption of children are inherently suspect because they permit an inherently a one-way process, in which African-American children are adopted by white people. The negative effects of being raised by white families are discussed.

New approaches, like the adverse outcome pathway (AOP) framework, have been developed to describe how chemicals cause toxicity by linking in vitro assays to adverse health outcomes. However, approaches, tools and resources for development of AOPs have not been well described. Here we review information resources for AOP development and define a streamlined process for linking a chemical to an existing AOP. We propose a four-step process to facilitate AOP development: link the uncharacterized chemical directly to molecular initiating events (MIEs), key events (KEs), or adverse outcomes (AOs); identify analogs with toxicological information for the uncharacterized chemical; link the characterized chemical (initial chemical if characterized, a characterized analog if initial chemical is not) to MIEs, KEs or AOs; and identify AOPs that contain the MIEs, KEs or AOs that were found in Steps 1 and 3. The process and library of informational resources proposed and tested here served as the foundation for an informational online tool (AOPERA) that helps practitioners identify their current-state knowledge gaps, navigate the four-step process, and connect to relevant resources. Additionally, we anticipate that by simplifying and standardizing the process of linking a chemical to a known AOP, we will lower the barrier to entry for this objective and increase its accessibility to new practitioners. We employed phylogenomic methods to study molecular evolutionary processes and phylogeny in the geographically widely dispersed New World diploid cottons (Gossypium, subg. Houzingenia). Whole genome resequencing data (average of 33× genomic coverage) were generated to reassess the phylogenetic history of the subgenus and provide a temporal framework for its diversification. Phylogenetic analyses indicate that the subgenus likely originated following transoceanic dispersal from Africa about 6.6 Ma, but that nearly all of the biodiversity evolved following rapid diversification in the mid-Pleistocene (0.5–2.0 Ma), with multiple long-distance dispersals required to account for range expansion to Arizona, the Galapagos Islands, and Peru. Comparative analyses of cpDNAversus nuclear data indicate that this history was accompanied by several clear cases of interspecific introgression. Repetitive DNAs contribute roughly half of the total 880 Mb genome, but most transposable element families are relatively old and stable among species. In the genic fraction, pairwise synonymous mutation rates average 1% per Myr, with nonsynonymous changes being about seven times less frequent. Over 1.1 million indels were detected and phylogenetically polarized, revealing a 2-fold bias toward deletions over small insertions. We suggest that this genome down-sizing bias counteracts genome size growth by TE amplification and insertions, and helps explain the relatively small genomes that are restricted to this subgenus. Compared with the rate of nucleotide substitution, the rate of indel occurrence is much lower averaging about 17 nucleotide substitutions per indel event. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Island species are highly vulnerable due to habitat destruction and their often small population sizes with reduced genetic diversity. The Hawaiian Islands constitute the most isolated archipelago on the planet, harboring many endemic species. Kokia is an endangered flowering plant genus endemic to these islands, encompassing 3 extant and 1 extinct species. Recent studies provided evidence of unexpected genetic diversity within Kokia. Here, we provide high-quality genome assemblies for all 3 extant Kokia species, including an improved genome for Kokia drynarioide s. All 3 Kokia genomes contain 12 chromosomes exhibiting high synteny within and between Kokia and the sister taxon Gossypioides kirkii. Gene content analysis revealed a net loss of genes in K. cookei compared to other species, whereas the gene complement in K. drynarioides remains stable and that of Kokia kauaiensis displays a net gain. A dated phylogeny estimates the divergence time from the last common ancestor for the 3 Kokia species at ∼1.2 million years ago (mya), with the sister taxa (K. cookei + K. drynarioides) diverging ∼0.8 mya. Kokia appears to have followed a stepping-stone pattern of colonization and diversification of the Hawaiian archipelago, likely starting on low or now submerged older islands. Labeo rohita (rohu) is a carp important to aquaculture in South Asia, with a production volume close to Atlantic salmon. While genetic improvements to rohu are ongoing, the genomic methods commonly used in other aquaculture improvement programs have historically been precluded in rohu, partially due to the lack of a high-quality reference genome. Here we present a high-quality de novo genome produced using a combination of next-generation sequencing technologies, resulting in a 946 Mb genome consisting of 25 chromosomes and 2,844 unplaced scaffolds. Notably, while approximately half the size of the existing genome sequence, our genome represents 97.9% of the genome size newly estimated here using flow cytometry. Sequencing from 120 individuals was used in conjunction with this genome to predict the population structure, diversity, and divergence in three major rivers (Jamuna, Padma, and Halda), in addition to infer a likely sex determination mechism in rohu. These results demonstrate the utility of the new rohu genome in modernizing some aspects of rohu genetic improvement programs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Pea (Pisum sativum L.) is a key rotational crop and is increasingly important in the food processing sector for its protein. This study focused on identifying diverse high seed protein concentration (SPC) lines in pea plant genetic resources. Objectives included identifying high-protein pea lines, exploring genetic architecture across environments, pinpointing genes and metabolic pathways associated with high protein, and documenting information for single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP)-based marker-assisted selection. From 2019 to 2021, a 487-accession pea diversity panel, More protein, More pea, More profit, was evaluated in a randomized complete block design. DNA was extracted for genomic analysis via genotype-by-sequencing. Phenotypic analysis included protein and fat measurements in seeds and flower color. Genome-wide association study (GWAS) used multiple models, and the Pathways Association Study Tool was used for metabolic pathway analysis. Significant associations were found between SNPs and pea seed protein and fat concentration. Gene Psat7g216440 on chromosome 7, which targets proteins to cellular destinations, including seed storage proteins, was identified as associated with SPC. Genes Psat4g009200, Psat1g199800, Psat1g199960, and Psat1g033960, all involved in lipid metabolism, were associated with fat concentration. GWAS also identified genes annotated for storage proteins associated with fat concentration, indicating a complex relationship between fat and protein. Metabolic pathway analysis identified 20 pathways related to fat and seven to protein concentration, involving fatty acids, amino acid and protein metabolism, and the tricarboxylic acid cycle. These findings will assist in breeding of high-protein, diverse pea cultivars, and SNPs that can be converted to breeder-friendly molecular marker assays are identified for genes associated with high protein., (© 2024 The Author(s).
