Worldwide, >18 million persons were infected with fish-borne zoonotic trematodes in 2002. To evaluate the effectiveness of interventions for reducing prevalence and intensity of fish-borne zoonotic trematode infections in juvenile fish, we compared transmission rates at nurseries in the Red River Delta, northern Vietnam. Rates were significantly lower for nurseries that reduced snail populations and trematode egg contamination in ponds than for nurseries that did not. These interventions can be used in the development of programs for sustained control of zoonotic trematodes in farmed fish. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The study was conducted to assess the effects of nitrogen (N)-fixing purple nonsulfur bacteria (PNSB) Rhodopseudomonas palustris TLS06, VNW02, VNW64, and VNS89 on soil fertility, N uptake, essential oil (EO) content, growth, and yield of lemon balm. The experiment followed a completely randomized block design with 9 treatments and 3 replications. The treatments consisted of (i) applying 100% N as the recommended fertilizer rate (RFR), (ii) applying 85% N as RFR, (iii) applying 70% N as RFR, (iv) applying 55% N as RFR, (v) the treatment ii combined with N-PNSB, (vi) the treatment iii combined with N-PNSB, (vii) the treatment iv combined with N-PNSB, (viii) 0% as RFR combined with N-PNSB, and (ix) 0% N as RFR. The results showed that applying N-PNSB increased the plant height, and the number of primary branches in both seasons. In addition, the treatment without N fertilizer combined with N-PNSB increased stem leaf biomass by 41.2 and 50.3% in both seasons as compared with the treatment without neither N fertilizer nor N-PNSB. For soil properties, among treatments without N fertilizer, the treatment with N-PNSB increased concentrations of NH 4 + , soluble P, and exchangeable K + by 41.3, 41.4, and 26.8%, respectively, as compared with the treatment without N-PNSB at the end of the second season. Applying 85% N as RFR combined with N-PNSB had a greater yield by 5.78-11.8% as compared with the treatment with 100% N as RFR, and a greater EO content by 23% as compared with the treatment with 85% N as RFR., Competing Interests: Declarations. Introduction: Autosomal recessive renal tubular dysgenesis (ARRTD) is a rare genetic disorder with a very high mortality rate. The typical symptoms of the disease during pregnancy are oligohydramnios, anhydramnios, and nearly all affected fetuses die after birth or have a stillbirth in late gestation, which can adversely increase maternal risks., Methods: Oligohydramnios/anhydramnios can make both amniocentesis for diagnostic testing and morphological evaluation via ultrasound more difficult. In cases of oligohydramnios/anhydramnios suspicious for urinary tract anomalies, amnioinfusion is a meaningful technique that facilitates sampling of amniotic fluid for genetic diagnosis., Results: We report two cases of fetuses with anhydramnios and invisible urinary bladder. Clinical exome sequencing from amniotic fluid revealed a biparentally inherited homozygous pathogenic nonsense ACE variant c.2503G 〉 T [p.Glu853Ter] in proband 1 and a biparentally inherited homozygous pathogenic nonsense ACE variant c.2992C 〉 T [p.Gln998Ter] in proband 2. The prognosis was poor and the patients elected to terminate the pregnancies. Additional post-mortem histopathological examination from the renal tissue of the second fetus showed renal tubular hypoplasia., Conclusion: To our knowledge for the first time, we describe the prenatal diagnosis of ARRTD in Vietnam, and highlight the benefit of detecting ACE variants associated with ARRTD in fetuses with oligohydramnios/anhydramnios through amnioinfusion and amniocentesis, which improves genotype-phenotype correlations and provides valuable information for reproductive counseling., (© 2023 The Authors. Two new vernonioside K ( 1 ) and vernonioside L ( 2 ) and four known Δ 7,9(11) stigmastane-type steroidal saponins-vernonioside B2 ( 3 ), vernoniacum B ( 4 ), vernonioside B1 ( 5 ), and vernoamyoside A ( 6 )-were isolated from the leaves of Vernonia amygdalina . Their structures were determined by comprehensive spectroscopic analysis with one-dimensional nuclear magnetic resonance, two-dimensional nuclear magnetic resonance, and high-resolution mass spectrometry. All isolated compounds ( 1 - 6 ) were evaluated to determine their inhibitory effects on α -glucosidase and xanthine oxidase. Among them, two new compounds 1 and 2 showed significant inhibition of α -glucosidase with IC 50 values of 78.56 ± 7.28 and 14.74 ± 1.57 (μM), respectively, comparable with acarbose as a positive control (127.53 ± 1.73 μM); none of these compounds inhibited xanthine oxidase activity. Compounds 1 and 2 are promising candidates for the development of antidiabetic agents from natural sources.

The natural antimicrobial peptide Polybia-MP1 is a promising candidate for developing new treatment therapy for infection and cancer. It showed broad-spectrum antimicrobial and anticancer activity with high safety on healthy cells. However, previous sequence modification usually resulted in at least one of two consequences: a notable increase in hemolytic activity or a considerable decrease in activity against Gram-negative bacteria and cancer cells. Herein, a new approach was applied by replacing the amino acid Glutamine at position 12 with Lysine and generating the MP1-Q12K analog. Our preliminary data suggested an enhancement in antibacterial and antifungal activity, whereas the anticancer and hemolytic activity of the two peptides were comparable. Moreover, MP1-Q12K was found to be less self-assembly than Polybia-MP1, which further supports the enhancement of antimicrobial properties. Hence, this study provides new information regarding the structure-activity relationships of Polybia-MP1 and support for the development of potent, selective antimicrobial peptides., (© 2023. Background: We determined the occurrence frequency of Clinical signs, subclinical characteristics on positive anti-IgG Toxocara ELISA cases, and clinical response results after 1 month of albendazole-specific treatment., Methods: A number of 103 clinically treated patients were studied between 2018 and 2019 in two hospitals. Relevant data are collected from examination and medical records such as age, sex, job, resident, clinical and sub-clinical signs. Sera samples were subjected to anti-IgG Toxocara antigen using ELISA., Results: The median age of the patient was 43.6 ± 14.4 years. The most common symptom groups were the skin and mucosa (88.3%), followed by neurological symptoms (44%). There are 76.7% of patients with risk factors for contact with pet dogs and cats. The majority of eosinophils in the normal range (< 8%) accounted for 85.4%, the major results of the OD value of ELISA were in the group (≥ 0.3-< 1.5) accounted for 75.7%. The skin and mucosa lesions in toxocariasis patients related to IgE values were statistically significant ( P <0.05). The effectiveness of anthelmintic treatment is low with nearly half of patients having no clinical symptoms after 1 month of post-treatment. It is statistically significant between exposure to dogs/cats and treatment outcomes on clinical symptoms ( P < 0.05)., Conclusion: Toxocara infections in Vietnamese people often have skin allergies and liver damage, rarely with severe neurological symptoms. The efficacy of albendazole treatment after one month is not clear. A new racemic xanthone, garmckeanin A (1), and eight known analogs 2-9 were isolated from the ethyl acetate (AcOEt) extract of the Vietnamese Garcinia mckeaniana leaves. Their structures were determined by MS and NMR spectral analyses and compared with the literature. The AcOEt extract showed good cytotoxicity against cancer cell lines KB, Lu, Hep-G2 and MCF7, with IC 50 values of 5.40-8.76 μg/mL, and it also possessed α-glucosidase inhibitory activity, with an IC 50 value of 9.17 μg/mL. Garmckeanin A (1) exhibited inhibition of all cancer cell lines, with an IC 50 value of 7.3-0.9 μM. Allanxanthone C (5) successfully controlled KB growth, with an IC 50 value of 0.54 μM, higher than that of the positive control, ellipticine (IC 50 1.22 μM). Norathyriol (8) was a promising α-glucosidase inhibitor, with an IC 50 value of 0.07 μM, much higher than that of the positive control, acarbose (IC 50 161.0 μM). The interactions of the potential α-glucosidase inhibitors with the C- and N-terminal domains of human intestinal α-glucosidase were also investigated by molecular docking study. The results indicated that bannaxanthone D (2), garcinone E (4), bannaxanthone E (6), and norathyriol (8) exhibit higher binding affinity to the C-terminal than to the N-terminal domain through essential residues in the active sites. The effects of moisture content, grain size, temperature, major elemental composition, and the pH of soils on the radon emanation and diffusion coefficients were evaluated in this study. The emanation and diffusion coefficients are strongly influenced by moisture content and grain size. The radon emanation coefficient increased and the diffusion coefficient decreased with decreasing particle size. However, for soils with large particle sizes, the radon emanation and diffusion coefficient remain almost unchanged with variation in grain size. Comparing five different sized soil particles, the emanation coefficient increased and the diffusion coefficient decreased with moisture content. The radon emanation coefficient reached a constant value with different moisture contents depending on the range of grain sizes. The saturation emanation coefficient for less than 0.1, 0.1-0.2, 0.2-0.3, 0.3-0.5, and more than 0.5 mm sized soil grain ranges are 0.47, 0.42, 0.35, 0.26 and 0.23, respectively, with saturation moisture contents of 16%, 14%, 10%, 6% and 4%, respectively. A drastic increase in radon emanation is found at smaller grain sizes with increasing moisture content. Based on the content of major elements and pH of the soils, the multiple regression indicates that the radon emanation coefficient appears to be significantly dependent on iron content and pH. Effective diffusion coefficient values calculated in our study agree with the results calculated by a previous model. Backround: The reversation of NMBA (neuromuscular blocking agents) prevents numerous postoperative complications, increases quality of recovery and decreases the time, expenditure spending in hospital. The choice of medicine used to reverse NMBA depends considered as a key fators to gain the best outcome and to avoid the side effects., Aim: To evaluate the postoperative effect on muscle relaxation reversal and side effects of sugammadex 2 mg/kg versus the combination of neostigmine and atropine sulfate in the living kidney donors., Methods: A randomised controlled trial on 70 patients undergoing living kidney donation surgery were allocated to 2 groups. Patients in group I (SUGA) were reversed with sugammadex 2 mg/kg and in group II (NEO/ATR) with the combination of neostigmine and atropine sulfat., Results: With 35 patients in each group, the study results showed that after 3 mintutes of reversal patients reaching TOF value ≥ 0.9 in group SUGA is 91.4%, after 5 minutes 100% of patients in group SUGA reached TOF value ≥ 0.9 . In group NEO/ATR after 3 minutes 28.6% patients reached TOF ≥ 0.9 and 40% patients reached TOF≥ 0.9 after 5 minutes. The difference in percentage of patients reaching TOF ≥ 0.9 after 3 minutes, 5 minutes of reversal between two groups is significant (p<0.05). After 10 minutes, 100% patients in both group got TOF ≥ 0.9. Time to exutubation of group SUGA was 249.43 ± 81.75 seconds and it was 456.29 ± 146.45 seconds in group NEO/ATR. Nausea, bradycardia, and increased phlegm production in group NEO/ATR was 22.9%; 28.5%; 25.7% respectively; while those side effects were not met in group SUGA, the difference was significant (p<0.05)., Conclusion: The muscle relaxation reversal effect of sugammadex was faster than that of neostigmine, the duration TOF ≥ 0.9 and the time to extubation was significantly faster. Sugammadex did not cause hemodynamic changes before and after muscle relaxation reversal, neostigmine resulted in the bradycardia, increased phlegm secreting and other side effects. Background: Maternal nutritional status is an important predictor of infant birthweight. Most previous attempts to improve birthweight through multiple micronutrient supplementation have been initiated after women are pregnant. Interventions to improve maternal nutritional status prior to conception may be more effective in preventing low birthweight and improving other infant health outcomes., Objective: To compare the effects of maternal supplementation with animal-source food from preconception to term or from mid-gestation to term with routine prenatal care on birthweight, the prevalence of preterm births, intrauterine growth restriction, and infant growth during the first 12 months of life and on maternal nutrient status and the incidence of maternal and infant infections., Methods: Young women from 29 rural communes in northwestern Vietnam were recruited when they registered to marry and were randomized to one of three interventions: animal-source food supplement 5 days per week from marriage to term (approximately 13 months), animal-source food supplement 5 days per week from 16 weeks of gestation to term (approximately 5 months), or routine prenatal care without supplementalfeeding. Data on infant birthweight and gestational age, maternal and infant anthropometry, micronutrient status, and infections in the infant and mother were collected at various time points., Results: In a preliminary study of women of reproductive age in this area of Vietnam, 40% of the women were underweight (body mass index < 18.5) and anemic. About 50% had infections. Rice was the dietary staple, and nutrient-rich, animal-source foods were rarely consumed by women. Iron, zinc, vitamin A, folate, and vitamin B12 intakes were inadequate in about 40% of the women. The study is still ongoing, and further data are not yet available., Conclusions: The results of this study will provide important data regarding whether improved intake of micronutrient-rich animal-source foods that are locally available and affordable before and during pregnancy improves maternal and infant health and development. This food-based approach may have global implications regarding how and when to initiate sustainable nutritional interventions to improve maternal and infant health.

Tbx2 is a member of the T-box family of transcription factors essential for embryo- and organogenesis. A deficiency in the zebrafish paralogue tbx2a causes abnormalities of the pharyngeal arches in a p53-independent manner. The pharyngeal arches are formed by derivatives of all three embryonic germ layers: endodermal pouches, mesenchymal condensations and neural crest cells. While tbx2a expression is restricted to the endodermal pouches, its function is required for the normal morphogenesis of the entire pharyngeal arches. Given the similar function of Tbx1 in craniofacial development, we explored the possibility of an interaction between Tbx1 and Tbx2a. The use of bimolecular fluorescence complementation revealed the interaction between Tbx2a and Tbx1, thus providing support for the idea that functional interaction between different, co-expressed Tbx proteins could be a common theme across developmental processes in cell lineages and tissues. Together, this work provides mechanistic insight into the role of TBX2 in human disorders affecting the face and neck.

Background: The aim of this study was to describe and compare breastfeeding practices in rural and urban areas of Vietnam and to study associations with possibly influencing person and household factors. This type of study has not been conducted in Vietnam before., Methods: Totally 2,690 children, born from 1st March 2008 to 30th June 2010 in one rural and one urban Health and Demographic Surveillance Site, were followed from birth to the age of 12 months. Information about demography, economy and education for persons and households was obtained from household surveys. Standard statistical methods including survival and regression analyses were used., Results: Initiation of breastfeeding during the first hour of life was more frequent in the urban area compared to the rural (boys 40% vs. 35%, girls 49% vs. 40%). High birth weight and living in households with large number of assets significantly increased the probability for early initiation of breastfeeding. Exclusive breastfeeding at three months of age was more commonly reported in the rural than in the urban area (boys 58% vs. 46%, girls 65% vs. 53%). The duration of exclusive breastfeeding as well as of any breastfeeding was longer in the rural area than in the urban area (medians for boys 97 days vs. 81 days, for girls 102 days vs. 91 days). The percentages of children with exclusive breastfeeding lasting at least 6 months, as recommended by WHO, were low in both areas. The duration of exclusive breastfeeding was significantly shorter for mothers with three or more antenatal care visits or Caesarean section in both areas. High education level of mothers was associated with longer duration of exclusive breastfeeding in the rural area. No significant associations were found between duration of exclusive breastfeeding and mother's age, household economy indicators or household size., Conclusion: Intervention programs with the aim to promote breastfeeding are needed. Mothers should particularly be informed about the importance of starting breastfeeding early and to prolong exclusive breastfeeding. In order to reach the WHO recommendation of six months exclusive breastfeeding, we propose an extended maternity leave legislation to at least six months.

Frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD) and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) are overlapping neurodegenerative disorders. Mutations in the growth factor progranulin (PGRN) gene cause FTLD, sometimes in conjunction with ALS; such mutations are also observed in some ALS patients. Most PGRN mutations underlying FTLD are null mutations that result in reduced PGRN levels. We investigated PGRN expression in human ALS and in mouse models of motor neuron degeneration. Progranulin plasma or CSF levels in newly diagnosed ALS patients did not differ from those in healthy or disease controls (PGRN mutation-negative FTLD and Alzheimer disease patients). In the mutant SOD1 mouse model of ALS, spinal cord PGRN levels were normal in presymptomatic animals but increased during the degenerative process. This increase in PGRN correlated with enhanced expression of PGRN in microglia. In CSF, PGRN levels were normal in presymptomatic and early symptomatic animals, but with disease progression, a raise in PGRN was detectable. These data indicate that upregulation of PGRN is a marker of the microglial response that occurs with progression in motor neuron diseases.

The ability of Rhodococcus fascians strain D188 to provoke leafy gall formation on a variety of plant species is correlated with the linear plasmid pFiD188, on which different pathogenicity loci were identified. The att locus affects the severity of symptom development on tobacco, whereas the fas locus is essential for virulence. To gain insight into the function of the att locus, sequence and expression analyses were performed. The att locus contains nine open reading frames homologous to arginine and beta-lactam biosynthetic genes. att gene expression is transcriptionally induced by leafy gall extracts, but not by extracts of uninfected plants, and depends on the attR gene that encodes a LysR-type transcriptional regulator. The att locus proves to be essential for the formation of inducing factors (IFs) that are present in gall extracts. Because the induction of the fas locus also requires the presence of IFs in gall extracts, the att locus is proposed to play an important role in regulating the expression of the virulence loci of R. fascians.
