9. Higher Adult Education in North America.

Abstract

A history of the development of higher adult education in the United States and Canada is presented. The point is made that higher education in North America includes a variety of post-high school institutions, including universities, senior colleges, junior colleges, community colleges, technical institutes and professional schools. A study of the organizational structure of the National University Extension Association (NUEA) reveals the pattern of the historical evolution of higher adult education. At the time of organization the emphasis was on methods of extension, primarily classes and correspondence study. Now the structure not only continues to recognize the common concerns for methodology but has expanded to provide for sharing concerns in program content, e.g., social problems, professional continuing education. It is stated that the most distinctly innovative expansions in higher adult education have occurred since World War II. Two are: (1) the development of residential centers for continuing education, and (2) the development of special degree programs for adults. Finally, it is pointed out that the universities in the 1970's face receding public support. Various possible responses to this lack of support are discussed. (Author/CK)

24. Job Satisfaction: An International Overview

An international comparison of job satisfaction levels strongly suggests that the idea of job satisfaction as a gauge of well-being at the workplace should be rejected, but that workers' reactions to aspects of their jobs may be meaningful. Abstract

A fixed-ratio combination of the basal insulin analogue insulin degludec and the glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) analogue liraglutide has been developed as a once-daily injection for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. We aimed to compare combined insulin degludec-liraglutide (IDegLira) with its components given alone in insulin-naive patients.In this phase 3, 26-week, open-label, randomised trial, adults with type 2 diabetes, HbA1c of 7-10% (inclusive), a BMI of 40 kg/m(2) or less, and treated with metformin with or without pioglitazone were randomly assigned (2:1:1) to daily injections of IDegLira, insulin degludec, or liraglutide (1·8 mg per day). IDegLira and insulin degludec were titrated to achieve a self-measured prebreakfast plasma glucose concentration of 4-5 mmol/L. The primary endpoint was change in HbA1c after 26 weeks of treatment, and the main objective was to assess the non-inferiority of IDegLira to insulin degludec (with an upper 95% CI margin of 0·3%), and the superiority of IDegLira to liraglutide (with a lower 95% CI margin of 0%). This study is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, number NCT01336023.1663 adults (mean age 55 years [SD 10], HbA1c 8·3% [0·9], and BMI 31·2 kg/m(2) [4·8]) were randomly assigned, 834 to IDegLira, 414 to insulin degludec, and 415 to liraglutide. After 26 weeks, mean HbA1c had decreased by 1·9% (SD 1·1) to 6·4% (1·0) with IDegLira, by 1·4% (1·0) to 6·9% (1·1) with insulin degludec, and by 1·3% (1·1) to 7·0% (1·2) with liraglutide. IDegLira was non-inferior to insulin degludec (estimated treatment difference -0·47%, 95% CI -0·58 to -0·36, p0·0001) and superior to liraglutide (-0·64%, -0·75 to -0·53, p0·0001). IDegLira was generally well tolerated; fewer participants in the IDegLira group than in the liraglutide group reported gastrointestinal adverse events (nausea 8·8 vs 19·7%), although the insulin degludec group had the fewest participants with gastrointestinal adverse events (nausea 3·6%). We noted no clinically relevant differences between treatments with respect to standard safety assessments, and the safety profile of IDegLira reflected those of its component parts. The number of confirmed hypoglycaemic events per patient year was 1·8 for IDegLira, 0·2 for liraglutide, and 2·6 for insulin degludec. Serious adverse events occurred in 19 (2%) of 825 patients in the IDegLira group, eight (2%) of 412 in the insulin degludec group, and 14 (3%) of 412 in the liraglutide group.IDegLira combines the clinical advantages of basal insulin and GLP-1 receptor agonist treatment, resulting in improved glycaemic control compared with its components given alone.Novo Nordisk.

Abstract

This study provides additional information about casino gambling practices in two adolescent samples. Specifically, 109 adolescents from a religious high school and 84 adolescents from a juvenile detention facility in Las Vegas, Nevada were surveyed. Of these, 71 (36.8%) were found to gamble regularly (58 males, 13 females, mean age 15.9 years). Results indicated many similarities among the two groups. The overall sample appeared to have a strong affinity for casino gambling, were diverse in their practices and reasons for gambling, reported a variety of emotional and physiological behaviors when gambling, occasionally experienced problems from casino gambling, and had parents who generally approved and were aware of their children's gambling behavior. The accessibility and family-oriented nature of many new casinos may be responsible for these effects.

31. Tough shielding standards challenge enclosure design

Abstract

Designers of enclosures for electronic equipment face stricter standards for electromagnetic interference. An implied realization that current enclosure designs are approaching their limits has been made in the US and the European Union as regulatory agencies make changes to regulations. The first of these changes is on Part 15 of the US Federal Communications Commission code regulating unintentional radiators in devices categorized as information technology equipment. In 1997, three additional immunity tests were imposed on enclosures through a revision of the European Union's EN50082-immunity standard. Products that do not conform to the standards would not be allowed entry into the US and the European Union.

32. Collaborative, case-based learning: How do students actually learn from each other?

Abstract

The value of collaborative, case-based, and problem-based learning has received Increased attention In recent years. Several studies have documented veterinary staff and students' generally positive feedback on group learning activities, but one largely unaddressed question Is how students actually learn from each other. This study examined how second-year veterinary students learned from each other during a collaborative, case-based learning project. Data were students' written reflections on their learning In the veterinary course and the specific learning experience, and a matched pre-and post-task questionnaire. Consistent with prior research describing veterinary students as Individualistic learners, only a third of students spontaneously mentioned learning from each other as one of their most effective strategies. However, when prompted to describe a time when they felt that group members were really learning from each other, students reported highly valuable collaborative learning processes, which they explicitly linked to learning and understanding benefits. Questionnaire data were consistent, showing that students became more positive toward several aspects of the activity as well as toward group work In general. One unexpected finding was the lack of a relationship between students' self-evaluation of their learning and how well group members knew each other. These findings provide strong support for the educational value of collaborative, case-based learning. In light of other research evidence (using observation data) that the amount of time students actually engage In high-level collaborative processes may be rather limited, this article points to the need for veterinary teachers to better prepare students for group learning activities.

33. High-level co-regulation in collaborative learning: How does it emerge and how is it sustained?

Abstract

This article examines the nature and process of collaborative learning in student-led group activities at university. A situative framework combining the constructs of social regulation and content processing was developed to identify instances of productive high-level co-regulation. Data involves video footage of groups of science students working on a case-based project. Striking group differences in types of interactions were revealed. Regularities in the emergence of high-level co-regulation and features of interactions that contributed to the maintenance of productive collaboration were also identified. The importance of fostering students' development as co-learners is highlighted.

Abstract

LP1846 Liquid Gun Propellant is under development by the U.S. Army as a possible substitute for solid gun propellants. Available toxicity data on liquid gun propellant formulations and/or their major components, indicate toxicities in exposed rats, guinea pigs, rabbits and miniature swine. The major toxic effects of these monopropellants are attributed to the ingredient hydroxylammonium nitrate and result in erythrocyte crenation, Heinz body formation and methemoglobin production. This range-finding study was conducted to establish a dose response curve, based upon single topical applications of undiluted LP1846 at selected skin surface area exposures in male Hanford Miniature Swine. The data were necessary to select optimal skin surface areas to be exposed in follow-on definitive toxicity studies.
