Prismatic adaption (PA) has been proposed as a tool to induce neural plasticity and is used to help neglect rehabilitation. It leads to a recalibration of visuo-motor coordination during pointing as well as to after-effects on a number of sensorimotor and attention tasks, but whether these effects originate at a motor or attentional level remains a matter of debate. Our aim was to further characterise PA after-effects by using an approach that allows distinguishing between effects on attentional and motor processes. We recorded electroencephalography (EEG) in healthy human participants (9 females and 7 males) while performing a new double step, anticipatory attention/motor preparation paradigm before and after adaptation to rightward shifting prisms, with neutral lenses as a control. We then examined PA after-effects through changes in known oscillatory EEG signatures of spatial attention orienting and motor preparation in the alpha and beta frequency bands. Our results were twofold. First, we found PA to rightward shifting prisms to selectively affect EEG signatures of motor but not attentional processes. More specifically, PA modulated preparatory motor EEG activity over central electrodes in the right hemisphere, contralateral to the PA-induced, compensatory leftward shift in pointing movements. No effects were found on EEG signatures of spatial attention orienting over occipito-parietal sites. Second, we found the PA effect on preparatory motor EEG activity to dominate in the beta frequency band. We conclude that changes to intentional visuo-motor rather than attentional visuo-spatial processes underlie the PA after-effect of rightward deviating prisms in healthy participants.Significance StatementPrismatic adaptation (PA) has been proposed as a tool to induce neural plasticity in both healthy participants and patients, due to its after-effect impacting on a number of visuo-spatial and visuo-motor functions. However, the neural mechanisms underlying PA after-effects are poorly understood as only little neuroimaging evidence is available. Here, we examined for the first time the origin of PA after-effects studying oscillatory brain activity. Our results show a selective modulation of preparatory motor activity following PA in healthy participants but no effect on attention-related activity. This provides novel insight into the PA after-effect in the healthy brain and may help to inform interventions in neglect patients.

Contains fulltext : 150681.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Open Access) Cortical oscillations, such as 8–12 Hz alpha-band activity, are thought to subserve gating of information processing in the human brain. While most of the supporting evidence is correlational, causal evidence comes from attempts to externally drive (“entrain”) these oscillations by transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). Indeed, the frequency profile of TMS-evoked potentials (TEPs) closely resembles that of oscillations spontaneously emerging in the same brain region. However, it is unclear whether TMS-locked and spontaneous oscillations are produced by the same neuronal mechanisms. If so, they should react in a similar manner to top-down modulation by endogenous attention. To test this prediction, we assessed the alpha-like EEG response to TMS of the visual cortex during periods of high and low visual attention while participants attended to either the visual or auditory modality in a cross-modal attention task. We observed a TMS-locked local oscillatory alpha response lasting several cycles after TMS (but not after sham stimulation). Importantly, TMS-locked alpha power was suppressed during deployment of visual relative to auditory attention, mirroring spontaneous alpha amplitudes. In addition, the early N40 TEP component, located at the stimulation site, was amplified by visual attention. The extent of attentional modulation for both TMS-locked alpha power and N40 amplitude did depend, with opposite sign, on the individual ability to modulate spontaneous alpha power at the stimulation site. We therefore argue that TMS-locked and spontaneous oscillations are of common neurophysiological origin, whereas the N40 TEP component may serve as an index of current cortical excitability at the time of stimulation.SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT Rhythmic transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a promising tool to experimentally “entrain” cortical activity. If TMS-locked oscillatory responses actually recruit the same neuronal mechanisms as spontaneous cortical oscillations, they qualify as a valid tool to study the causal role of neuronal oscillations in cognition but also to enable new treatments targeting aberrant oscillatory activity in, for example, neurological conditions. Here, we provide first-time evidence that TMS-locked and spontaneous oscillations are indeed tightly related and are likely to rely on the same neuronal generators. In addition, we demonstrate that an early local component of the TMS-evoked potential (the N40) may serve as a new objective and noninvasive probe of visual cortex excitability, which so far was only accessible via subjective phosphene reports.

Neural oscillations are ubiquitous measurements of cognitive processes and dynamic routing and gating of information. The fundamental and so far unresolved problem for neuroscience remains to understand how oscillatory activity in the brain codes information for human cognition. In a biologically relevant cognitive task, we instructed six human observers to categorize facial expressions of emotion while we measured the observers' EEG. We combined state-of-the-art stimulus control with statistical information theory analysis to quantify how the three parameters of oscillations (i.e., power, phase, and frequency) code the visual information relevant for behavior in a cognitive task. We make three points: First, we demonstrate that phase codes considerably more information (2.4 times) relating to the cognitive task than power. Second, we show that the conjunction of power and phase coding reflects detailed visual features relevant for behavioral response—that is, features of facial expressions predicted by behavior. Third, we demonstrate, in analogy to communication technology, that oscillatory frequencies in the brain multiplex the coding of visual features, increasing coding capacity. Together, our findings about the fundamental coding properties of neural oscillations will redirect the research agenda in neuroscience by establishing the differential role of frequency, phase, and amplitude in coding behaviorally relevant information in the brain., Author Summary To recognize visual information rapidly, the brain must continuously code complex, high-dimensional information impinging on the retina, not all of which is relevant, because a low-dimensional code can be sufficient for both recognition and behavior (e.g. a fearful expression can be correctly recognized only from the wide-opened eyes). The oscillatory networks of the brain dynamically reduce the high-dimensional information into a low dimensional code, but it remains unclear which aspects of these oscillations produce the low dimensional code. Here, we measured the EEG of human observers while we presented them with samples of visual information from expressive faces (happy, sad, fear, etc.). Using statistical information theory, we extracted the low-dimensional code that is most informative for correct recognition of each expression (e.g. the opened mouth for “happy,” the wide opened eyes for “fear”). Next, we measured how the three parameters of brain oscillations (frequency, power and phase) code for low-dimensional features. Surprisingly, we find that phase codes 2.4 times more task information than power. We also show that the conjunction of power and phase sufficiently codes the low-dimensional facial features across brain oscillations. These findings offer a new way of thinking about the differential role of frequency, phase and amplitude in coding behaviorally relevant information in the brain.

In a previous study, we found that relearning of a task with one hand might negatively be influenced by previous, opposite hand training of the analogue task, Thut G., et al., Exp. Brain Res., 108 (1996) 321-327. Drawing of a figure with the right hand, following left hand training, was slower than right hand drawing of an unknown figure. These conditions were termed right hand transfer learning (rTL) and right hand original learning (rOL). The present study aimed to identify the cerebral areas associated with these influences by measuring regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) in 16 right-handed, healthy subjects during rTL and rOL. Positron emission tomography and statistical parametric mapping were used. Compared with rOL, rTL was associated with increased rCBF in the left medial prefrontal cortex and the right prefrontal convexity. Individual rCBF changes in the area homotopic to the right prefrontal convexity furthermore correlated with individual changes in rTL performance. While the smallest rCBF increases were found in subjects with weakest slowing of rTL relative to rOL, highest rCBF increases were present when rTL slowing dominated. Comparisons between rTL and rOL, however, revealed on average no performance differences. Our data suggest that relearning after previous opposite hand training activates neural mechanisms within the prefrontal convexity which might have an inhibitory function but that inhibition does not have to be the net final behavioral result.
