Abstract

The compatibility of seal materials with the working fluid is crucial for the flawless, energy-saving, environmentally sustainable, and safe operation of any technical system. This is especially true for hydraulic systems operating under high operating pressure. The problem of materials compatibility comes into play when either a new type of seal material or a new type of fluid comes into use. The paper discusses the research findings regarding material compatibility testing of new high-tech ionic hydraulic fluids with commonly used seal materials. Due to the completely different chemical composition of these new fluids compared to the classical mineral-based oil, for these fluids, there are no standardized testing procedures. In these cases, we can only lean on the Standards that apply to classical fluids, which can lead to incorrect results. In the forefront of the paper is the discrepancy between the results obtained by the standardized test, and the test under real operating conditions. FKM, an excellent material for seals, proved to be the most suitable in the case of using ionic hydraulic fluid, according to a standardized test. However, it failed in the comparison test under real operating conditions, as the cylinder leaked. NBR seals proved to be a better solution. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Ionic liquids, as high‐tech technical fluids, have been in practical application in various fields of technology for several years. The search for ionic liquids suitable for use within hydraulic systems, as another new very important field of technology, has taken more than a decade. The development included the identification of material properties important for usage as a hydraulic fluid, an extensive preselection process and laboratory testing of suitable ionic liquids, as well as long‐term testing using real hydraulic components under real operating conditions. Based on the findings, potential areas of industrial application of ionic liquids as hydraulic fluids are presented, which arise from their extraordinary physicochemical properties. In addition to its basic physicochemical properties, it must meet a number of other requirements related to its practical use within hydraulic system and the materials used therein. Ionic Liquids, as novel lubricants, offer the solution in this regard. The paper gives an overview of the basic properties of selected and tested Ionic Liquids suitable for use as hydraulic fluids. The practically obtained data refer to the basic physico-chemical properties of Ionic Liquids and properties important for practical use within hydraulic system, e.g. compatibility with materials. The results are given in a comparison with common mineral oil based hydraulic oil.

Abstract

Condition monitoring of hydraulic and turbine oils, and especially their remaining useful life, is becoming an important strategic business advantage for plant owners, which benefits in environment protection and cost reduction. This monograph discusses the problem of condition monitoring of hydraulic fluids throughout their life-cycles. Particular emphasis is placed on assessing mineral-based oils’ conditions and their remaining useful lifetimes quantitatively. Practicality and usefulness are vital when developing and deploying various methods for condition monitoring systems within industrial environments. Therefore, it is important to know the oil degradation mechanisms and influencing factors, commonly used laboratory methods and oil ageing tests, as well as, for on-line condition monitoring system design, the available sensors with all their characteristics and restrictions. The proposed approach is based on a novel method for testing the durability and oxidation stability of different hydraulic and turbine oils. The developed mathematical model is based on data from previously conducted oil-ageing tests for the assessment of an oil's condition and its remaining useful lifetime. The method can also be used for comparison of different oils and selection of a more adequate oil with high oxidation stability and long service-lifetime. Nadzor stanja hidravličnih in turbinskih olj, še posebej pa poznavanje njihove preostale uporabne dobe, je vse bolj pomembna strateško poslovna prednost, tako za lastnika naprave, za zaščito okolja in za zmanjševanje stroškov. Temu se posveča pričujoča monografija: nadzor stanja hidravličnih tekočin skozi njihov ciklus uporabe. Poudarek je na ugotavljanju trenutnega stanja in preostale uporabne dobe olj na mineralni osnovi. Za razvoj in uporabo metod za nadzorne sisteme v industrijskih okoljih sta ključnega pomena njihova praktičnost, natančnost in uporabnost. Zato je pomembno poznati mehanizme degradacije olja in vplivne faktorje, uporabljane laboratorijske metode in teste za staranje olja, za zasnovo sistema spremljanja stanja pa še razpoložljive senzorje, z vsemi svojimi lastnostmi in omejitvami. Predlagani pristop temelji na novi metodi testiranja vzdržljivosti in oksidacije stabilnosti različnih hidravličnih in turbinskih olj. Razviti matematični model temelji na podatkih predhodno izvedenih testiranj staranja olja: trenutnega stanja olja in njegove preostale uporabne dobe. Metodo lahko uporabljamo tudi za primerjavo vzdržljivosti različnih olj, ki je osnova za izbiro olja z visoko oksidacijsko stabilnostjo in s tem dolgo uporabno dobo.
