In the southwestern Sichuan Basin, the Jurassic Shaximiao Formation encompasses a multitude of working areas, displaying intricate sedimentary traits. Traditional methods of stratigraphic division based on sequence suffer from inherent subjectivity and limitations. This study employs a combined mathematical approach to use the wavelet transform (WT) and the Hilbert–Huang transform (HHT). It decomposes the natural gamma ray (GR) logging curve into energy spectrum plots and wavelet coefficients at different scales, high and low frequency signals at different frequencies, and a set of intrinsic mode function components and residual functions. The study conducted a detailed stratigraphic division of the Jurassic Shaximiao Formation in the southwestern Sichuan Basin using these methods. The WT offers greater resolution for the periodic changes in the base level, whereas the HHT demonstrates a superior correlation with the positions of stratigraphic interfaces. The combined utilization of the continuous wavelet transform, the discrete wavelet transform, and HHT methods has demonstrated encouraging outcomes in the stratigraphic division of the Jurassic Shaximiao Formation. These methods have been shown to enhance the accuracy of stratigraphic division and to reduce the influence of subjective factors. This study presents new insights and approaches for geological data processing, offering significant theoretical and practical implications and novel technical means for oil and gas exploration and development.

With potential hydrocarbon source rocks, the Mesozoic Lower Cretaceous interval in the Aitegle Sag of the Yingen-Ejinaqi Basin in China has a bright petroleum exploration prospect. Considering the scarcity of wells in Aitegle Sag, we have systematically carried out the research on the sequence structure and sedimentary system evolution of the Lower Cretaceous based on seismic, core, and logging data, guided by the Vail classic sequence stratigraphy, and innovatively introduced the self-organizing mapping neural network (SOM) learning algorithm to assist in seismic geological analysis. The results are as follows: (1) after RMSAmp, LyapIndex, FrctDim, and InfoEntr clustering, five zones are divided, which are corresponding to five seismic facies (showing medium-strong amplitude and parallel-subparallel reflection; medium-strong amplitude and wedge-shaped divergent reflection; medium-strong amplitude and continuous-relatively continuous, parallel-subparallel reflection; strong amplitude and continuous sheet-like or blank reflection; and weak amplitude and mound-shaped chaotic reflection, respectively), and interpreted as five subfacies including delta plain front, prodelta-shallow lake, semideep lake, deep lake, and sublacustrine fan. (2) The Lower Cretaceous formation includes one second-order sequence, three third-order sequences (SQ2–SQ4), and six system tracts. In the SQ2–SQ4 circle, the delta system formed by sediments from southeast varies remarkably in the progradational zones in different system tracts, and tectonic movements and sediment supply control the sequence stratigraphy in the study area as major factors. (3) It is feasible to apply SOM learning algorithm to seismic attribute clustering analysis. This method effectively realizes the combination of geophysical methods based on big data analysis and geological problem analysis, which not only strengthens the use of seismic data but also ensures the effectiveness and reliability of clustering results. These findings offer basic data and scientific supports for the exploration and development of unconventional reservoirs (e.g., shale and tight oil/gas reservoirs) in the Aitegle Sag and also provide new ideas for studying the sequence-sediment in the target zones in the fault basin regions with scarce wells.

During the Early-Middle Ordovician, the Upper Yangtze Platform experienced extensive development of a distinctive set of mixed siliciclastic-carbonate deposits known as the Meitan Formation. To conduct a comprehensive study of the relationship between mixed sedimentation and sea-level changes, the Hailong section, situated at the southwest margin of the Upper Yangtze Platform in SW China, was selected as the study area due to its typical mixed sedimentary sequence. This section was effectively compared with sections in other regions. Clustering analysis of the point-count groups from the Honghuayuan and Meitan Formations revealed nine microfacies that developed during this period. Such a diverse range of microfacies provides the evidence of frequent sea-level changes in the Yangtze Platform throughout this period. Specifically, two sea-level rises were identified during the early TS.2b and early TS.3b, with the early TS.2b event occurring globally. Furthermore, four sea-level falls were observed in the late TS.2b, TS.2c, TS.3a, and late TS.3b periods. The late TS.2b sea-level fall was globally significant. From TS.2c onwards, distinct variations in sea-level changes among the Yangtze Platform, North China, Baltoscandia, Australia, and North America emerged due to alterations in the paleogeographic pattern. By comparing the sea-level curves in the Upper Yangtze Platform with the diversity curves of chitinozoans, acritarchs, and brachiopods, it became evident that environmental changes played a crucial role in the Great Ordovician Biodiversification Event (GOBE), especially during the Floian. The rising sea level and increased detrital materials fostered the development of diverse habitats, prompting organisms to adapt to varying environments. In general, rising sea levels favored increased brachiopod diversity, while falling sea levels favored enhanced planktonic diversity among chitinous and acritarch species. By shedding new light on the relationship between Ordovician sea-level changes and biodiversification in the Yangtze region, this study offers a fresh perspective on the subject from the microfacies analysis. Salinized lake basins have distinctive sedimentary response characteristics, similar to marine shallow-water carbonate platforms. High-frequency cycles can also be used to reveal more sedimentological information, such as relative lake-level fluctuations, lithofacies sequence combinations, and paleogeographic evolution. In this article, a comprehensive study on the stratigraphic shelf delineation and high-frequency cycles of the Paleozoic Kumugeliemu Group in Xinhe area, northern Tarim Basin, was performed using drilling cores, logging curves, and seismic analyses. As a result of the study, the following data were obtained: the three sets of marker beds in the Kumugeliemu Group in the study area could be divided into a bottom sandstone component (E1-2 km1), a lower gypsum mudstone component (E1-2 km2), a salt rock component (E1-2 km3), and an upper gypsum mudstone component (E1-2 km4) by petrology vertical overlay combination and isochronous tracking correlation, which constituted two third-order cycles (ESQ1, ESQ2). They were further divided into seven fourth-order cycles (Esq1–Esq7). Due to the droughty and saline lacustrine depositional system background, the internal rock fabric changed frequently and showed a periodic vertical overlay pattern. Stratified gypsum salt, gypsum mud (sand) rock, and gypsum rock were used as the cycle interface. A single cycle was mainly characterized by an upward shallower depositional sequence of rapid lake transgression followed by a slow lake regression, composed of massive sandstone–lamellar mudstone–lime dolomite–gypsum rock, massive sandstone–lamellar mudstone–gypsum rock (gypsum salt), massive sandstone–massive gypsum mud (sand) rock–gypsum rock, and other cycle structure types. The complete sedimentary cycle was superposed by a single cycle and compared by the inter-well thickness difference, indicating that the study area had a paleogeomorphology pattern of "West-Low–East-High". The thickness of the cycles decreased gradually from bottom to top vertically, and five sedimentary stages were determined, i.e., freshwater, brackish, brackish water, salt lake, and semi-saltwater, reflecting the evolutionary process of increasing salinity, lake basin filling, and gradual salinization and shrinkage.
