Abstract: The Water Cherenkov Detector Array (WCDA) is one of the components of Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO) and can monitor any sources over two-thirds of the sky for up to 7 hours per day with >98\% duty cycle. In this work, we report the detection of two outbursts of the Fanaroff-Riley I radio galaxy NGC 1275 that were detected by LHAASO-WCDA between November 2022 and January 2023 with statistical significance of 5.2~$\sigma$ and 8.3~$\sigma$. The observed spectral energy distribution in the range from 500 GeV to 3 TeV is fitted by a power-law with a best-fit spectral index of $\alpha=-3.37\pm0.52$ and $-3.35\pm0.29$, respectively. The outburst flux above 0.5~TeV was ($4.55\pm 4.21)\times~10^{-11}~\rm cm^{-2}~s^{-1}$ and ($3.45\pm 1.78)\times~10^{-11}~\rm cm^{-2}~s^{-1}$, corresponding to 60\%, 45\% of Crab Nebula flux. Variation analysis reveals the variability time-scale of days at the TeV energy band. A simple test by one-zone synchrotron self-Compton model reproduces the data in the gamma-ray band well., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures, 3 tables

Abstract: We report the detection of an extended very-high-energy (VHE) gamma-ray source coincident with the location of middle-aged (62.4~\rm kyr) pulsar PSR J0248+6021, by using the LHAASO-WCDA data of live 796 days and LHAASO-KM2A data of live 1216 days. A significant excess of \gray induced showers is observed both by WCDA in energy bands of 1-25~\rm TeV and KM2A in energy bands of $>$ 25~\rm TeV with 7.3 $\sigma$ and 13.5 $\sigma$, respectively. The best-fit position derived through WCDA data is R.A. = 42.06$^\circ \pm$ 0.12$^\circ$ and Dec. = 60.24$^\circ \pm $ 0.13$^\circ$ with an extension of 0.69$^\circ\pm$0.15$^\circ$ and that of the KM2A data is R.A.= 42.29$^\circ \pm $ 0.13$^\circ$ and Dec. = 60.38$^\circ \pm$ 0.07$^\circ$ with an extension of 0.37$^\circ\pm$0.07$^\circ$. No clear extended multiwavelength counterpart of this LHAASO source has been found from the radio band to the GeV band. The most plausible explanation of the VHE \gray emission is the inverse Compton process of highly relativistic electrons and positrons injected by the pulsar. These electrons/positrons are hypothesized to be either confined within the pulsar wind nebula or to have already escaped into the interstellar medium, forming a pulsar halo., Comment: 12 pages, 10 figures, Accepted by Sci. Abstract: In this work we try to search for signals generated by ultra-heavy dark matter at the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO) data. We look for possible gamma-ray by dark matter annihilation or decay from 16 dwarf spheroidal galaxies in the field of view of LHAASO. Dwarf spheroidal galaxies are among the most promising targets for indirect detection of dark matter which have low fluxes of astrophysical $\gamma$-ray background while large amount of dark matter. By analyzing more than 700 days observational data at LHAASO, no significant dark matter signal from 1 TeV to 1 EeV is detected. Accordingly we derive the most stringent constraints on the ultra-heavy dark matter annihilation cross-section up to EeV. Abstract: The KM2A is the largest sub-array of the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO). It consists of 5216 electromagnetic particle detectors (EDs) and 1188 muon detectors (MDs). The data recorded by the EDs and MDs are used to reconstruct primary information of cosmic ray and gamma-ray showers. This information is used for physical analysis in gamma-ray astronomy and cosmic ray physics. To ensure the reliability of the LHAASO-KM2A data, a three-level quality control system has been established. It is used to monitor the status of detector units, stability of reconstructed parameters and the performance of the array based on observations of the Crab Nebula and Moon shadow. This paper will introduce the control system and its application on the LHAASO-KM2A data collected from August 2021 to July 2023. During this period, the pointing and angular resolution of the array were stable. From the observations of the Moon shadow and Crab Nebula, the results achieved using the two methods are consistent with each other. According to the observation of the Crab Nebula at energies from 25 TeV to 100 TeV, the time averaged pointing errors are estimated to be $-0.003^{\circ} \pm 0.005^{\circ}$ and $0.001^{\circ} \pm 0.006^{\circ}$ in the R.A. and Dec directions, respectively., Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures

Abstract: The first source catalog of Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory reported the detection of a very-high-energy gamma ray source, 1LHAASO J1219+2915. In this paper a further detailed study of the spectral and temporal behavior of this point-like source have been carried. The best-fit position of the TeV source ($\rm{RA}=185.05^{\circ}\pm0.04^{\circ}$, $\rm{Dec}=29.25^{\circ}\pm0.03^{\circ}$) is compatible with NGC 4278 within $\sim0.03$ degree. Variation analysis shows an indication of the variability at a few months level in the TeV band, which is consistent with low frequency observations. Based on these observations, we report the detection of TeV $\gamma$-ray emissions from this low-luminosity AGN NGC 4278. The observations by LHAASO-WCDA during active period has a significance level of 8.8\,$\sigma$ with best-fit photon spectral index $\varGamma=2.56\pm0.14$ and a flux $f_{1-10\,\rm{TeV}}=(7.0\pm1.1_{\rm{sta}}\pm0.35_{\rm{syst}})\times10^{-13}\,\rm{photons\,cm^{-2}\,s^{-1}}$, or approximately $5\%$ of the Crab Nebula. The discovery of VHE from NGC 4278 indicates that the compact, weak radio jet can efficiently accelerate particles and emit TeV photons., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures

Abstract: KM2A is one of the main sub-arrays of LHAASO, working on gamma ray astronomy and cosmic ray physics at energies above 10 TeV. Detector simulation is the important foundation for estimating detector performance and data analysis. It is a big challenge to simulate the KM2A detector in the framework of Geant4 due to the need to track numerous photons from a large number of detector units (>6000) with large altitude difference (30 m) and huge coverage (1.3 km^2). In this paper, the design of the KM2A simulation code G4KM2A based on Geant4 is introduced. The process of G4KM2A is optimized mainly in memory consumption to avoid memory overffow. Some simpliffcations are used to signiffcantly speed up the execution of G4KM2A. The running time is reduced by at least 30 times compared to full detector simulation. The particle distributions and the core/angle resolution comparison between simulation and experimental data of the full KM2A array are also presented, which show good agreement.

Abstract: We present the measurements of all-particle energy spectrum and mean logarithmic mass of cosmic rays in the energy range of 0.3-30 PeV using data collected from LHAASO-KM2A between September 2021 and December 2022, which is based on a nearly composition-independent energy reconstruction method, achieving unprecedented accuracy. Our analysis reveals the position of the knee at $3.67 \pm 0.05 \pm 0.15$ PeV. Below the knee, the spectral index is found to be -$2.7413 \pm 0.0004 \pm 0.0050$, while above the knee, it is -$3.128 \pm 0.005 \pm 0.027$, with the sharpness of the transition measured with a statistical error of 2%. The mean logarithmic mass of cosmic rays is almost heavier than helium in the whole measured energy range. It decreases from 1.7 at 0.3 PeV to 1.3 at 3 PeV, representing a 24% decline following a power law with an index of -$0.1200 \pm 0.0003 \pm 0.0341$. This is equivalent to an increase in abundance of light components. Above the knee, the mean logarithmic mass exhibits a power law trend towards heavier components, which is reversal to the behavior observed in the all-particle energy spectrum. Additionally, the knee position and the change in power-law index are approximately the same. These findings suggest that the knee observed in the all-particle spectrum corresponds to the knee of the light component, rather than the medium-heavy components., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures

Abstract: Monochromatic gamma-ray signals constitute a potential smoking gun signature for annihilating or decaying dark matter particles that could relatively easily be distinguished from astrophysical or instrumental backgrounds. We provide an updated assessment of the sensitivity of the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) to such signals, based on observations of the Galactic centre region as well as of selected dwarf spheroidal galaxies. We find that current limits and detection prospects for dark matter masses above 300 GeV will be significantly improved, by up to an order of magnitude in the multi-TeV range. This demonstrates that CTA will set a new standard for gamma-ray astronomy also in this respect, as the world's largest and most sensitive high-energy gamma-ray observatory, in particular due to its exquisite energy resolution at TeV energies and the adopted observational strategy focussing on regions with large dark matter densities. Throughout our analysis, we use up-to-date instrument response functions, and we thoroughly model the effect of instrumental systematic uncertainties in our statistical treatment. Abstract: For decades, supernova remnants (SNRs) have been considered the prime sources of Galactic Cosmic rays (CRs). But whether SNRs can accelerate CR protons to PeV energies and thus dominate CR flux up to the knee is currently under intensive theoretical and phenomenological debate. The direct test of the ability of SNRs to operate as CR PeVatrons can be provided by ultrahigh-energy (UHE; $E_\gamma \geq 100$~TeV) $\gamma$-rays. In this context, the historical SNR Cassiopeia A (Cas A) is considered one of the most promising target for UHE observations. This paper presents the observation of Cas A and its vicinity by the LHAASO KM2A detector. The exceptional sensitivity of LHAASO KM2A in the UHE band, combined with the young age of Cas A, enabled us to derive stringent model-independent limits on the energy budget of UHE protons and nuclei accelerated by Cas A at any epoch after the explosion. Abstract: The highest energy gamma-rays from gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) have important implications for their radiation mechanism. Here we report for the first time the detection of gamma-rays up to 13 TeV from the brightest GRB 221009A by the Large High Altitude Air-shower Observatory (LHAASO). The LHAASO-KM2A detector registered more than 140 gamma-rays with energies above 3 TeV during 230$-$900s after the trigger. The intrinsic energy spectrum of gamma-rays can be described by a power-law after correcting for extragalactic background light (EBL) absorption. Such a hard spectrum challenges the synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) scenario of relativistic electrons for the afterglow emission above several TeV. Observations of gamma-rays up to 13 TeV from a source with a measured redshift of z=0.151 hints more transparency in intergalactic space than previously expected. Abstract: Galaxy clusters are expected to be dark matter (DM) reservoirs and storage rooms for the cosmic-ray protons (CRp) that accumulate along the cluster's formation history. Accordingly, they are excellent targets to search for signals of DM annihilation and decay at gamma-ray energies and are predicted to be sources of large-scale gamma-ray emission due to hadronic interactions in the intracluster medium. We estimate the sensitivity of the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) to detect diffuse gamma-ray emission from the Perseus galaxy cluster. We perform a detailed spatial and spectral modelling of the expected signal for the DM and the CRp components. For each, we compute the expected CTA sensitivity. The observing strategy of Perseus is also discussed. In the absence of a diffuse signal (non-detection), CTA should constrain the CRp to thermal energy ratio within the radius $R_{500}$ down to about $X_{500}<3\times 10^{-3}$, for a spatial CRp distribution that follows the thermal gas and a CRp spectral index $\alpha_{\rm CRp}=2.3$. Under the optimistic assumption of a pure hadronic origin of the Perseus radio mini-halo and depending on the assumed magnetic field profile, CTA should measure $\alpha_{\rm CRp}$ down to about $\Delta\alpha_{\rm CRp}\simeq 0.1$ and the CRp spatial distribution with 10% precision. Regarding DM, CTA should improve the current ground-based gamma-ray DM limits from clusters observations on the velocity-averaged annihilation cross-section by a factor of up to $\sim 5$, depending on the modelling of DM halo substructure. In the case of decay of DM particles, CTA will explore a new region of the parameter space, reaching models with $\tau_{\chi}>10^{27}$s for DM masses above 1 TeV. These constraints will provide unprecedented sensitivity to the physics of both CRp acceleration and transport at cluster scale and to TeV DM particle models, especially in the decay scenario., Comment: 93 pages (including author list, appendix and references), 143 figures. Abstract: We present the first catalog of very-high energy and ultra-high energy gamma-ray sources detected by the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO). The catalog was compiled using 508 days of data collected by the Water Cherenkov Detector Array (WCDA) from March 2021 to September 2022 and 933 days of data recorded by the Kilometer Squared Array (KM2A) from January 2020 to September 2022. This catalog represents the main result from the most sensitive large coverage gamma-ray survey of the sky above 1 TeV, covering declination from $-$20$^{\circ}$ to 80$^{\circ}$. In total, the catalog contains 90 sources with an extended size smaller than $2^\circ$ and a significance of detection at $> 5\sigma$. Based on our source association criteria, 32 new TeV sources are proposed in this study. Among the 90 sources, 43 sources are detected with ultra-high energy ($E > 100$ TeV) emission at $> 4\sigma$ significance level. Abstract: The diffuse Galactic $\gamma$-ray emission, mainly produced via interactions between cosmic rays and the interstellar medium and/or radiation field, is a very important probe of the distribution, propagation, and interaction of cosmic rays in the Milky Way. In this work we report the measurements of diffuse $\gamma$-rays from the Galactic plane between 10 TeV and 1 PeV energies, with the square kilometer array of the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO). Diffuse emissions from the inner ($15^{\circ}10$~TeV). The energy spectrum in the inner Galaxy regions can be described by a power-law function with an index of $-2.99\pm0.04$, which is different from the curved spectrum as expected from hadronic interactions between locally measured cosmic rays and the line-of-sight integrated gas content. Furthermore, the measured flux is higher by a factor of $\sim3$ than the prediction. A similar spectrum with an index of $-2.99\pm0.07$ is found in the outer Galaxy region, and the absolute flux for $10\lesssim E\lesssim60$ TeV is again higher than the prediction for hadronic cosmic ray interactions. The latitude distributions of the diffuse emission are consistent with the gas distribution, while the longitude distributions show clear deviation from the gas distribution. Abstract: The Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO) has three sub-arrays, KM2A, WCDA and WFCTA. The flux variations of cosmic ray air showers were studied by analyzing the KM2A data during the thunderstorm on 10 June 2021. The number of shower events that meet the trigger conditions increases significantly in atmospheric electric fields, with maximum fractional increase of 20%. The variations of trigger rates (increases or decreases) are found to be strongly dependent on the primary zenith angle. The flux of secondary particles increases significantly, following a similar trend with that of the shower events. To better understand the observed behavior, Monte Carlo simulations are performed with CORSIKA and G4KM2A (a code based on GEANT4). We find that the experimental data (in saturated negative fields) are in good agreement with simulations, assuming the presence of a uniform upward electric field of 700 V/cm with a thickness of 1500 m in the atmosphere above the observation level. Due to the acceleration/deceleration and deflection by the atmospheric electric field, the number of secondary particles with energy above the detector threshold is modified, resulting in the changes in shower detection rate., Comment: 18 pages, 11 figures

Abstract: The Crab pulsar and the surrounding nebula powered by the pulsar's rotational energy through the formation and termination of a relativistic electron-positron wind is a bright source of gamma-rays carrying crucial information about this complex conglomerate. We report the detection of $\gamma$-rays with a spectrum showing gradual steepening over three energy decades, from $5\times 10^{-4}$ to $1.1$ petaelectronvolt (PeV). The ultra-high-energy photons exhibit the presence of a PeV electron accelerator (a pevatron) with an acceleration rate exceeding 15% of the absolute theoretical limit. Assuming that unpulsed $\gamma$-rays are produced at the termination of the pulsar's wind, we constrain the pevatron's size, between $0.025$ and $0.1$ pc, and the magnetic field $\approx 110 \mu$G. The production rate of PeV electrons, $2.5 \times 10^{36}$ erg $\rm s^{-1}$, constitutes 0.5% of the pulsar's spin-down luminosity, although we do not exclude a non-negligible contribution of PeV protons to the production of the highest energy $\gamma$-rays., Comment: 43 pages, 13 figures, 2 tables; Published in Science

Abstract: The Wide Field-of-View Cherenkov Telescope Array (WFCTA) and the Water Cherenkov Detector Arrays (WCDA) of LHAASO are designed to work in combination for measuring the energy spectra of various cosmic ray species over a very wide energy range from a few TeV to 10 PeV. The energy calibration of WCDA can be achieved with a proven technique of measuring the westward shift of the Moon shadow of galactic cosmic rays due to the geomagnetic field. This deflection angle $\Delta$ is inversely proportional to the energy of the cosmic rays. The precise measurements of the shifts by WCDA allows us to calibrate its energy scale for energies as high as 35 TeV. The energy scale measured by WCDA can be used to cross calibrate the energy reconstructed by WFCTA, which spans the whole energy range up to 10 PeV. In this work, we will demonstrate the feasibility of the method using the data collected from April 2019 to January 2020 by the WFCTA array and WCDA-1 detector, the first of the three water Cherenkov ponds, already commissioned at LHAASO site.

Abstract: The focal plane camera is the core component of the Wide Field-of-view Cherenkov/fluorescence Telescope Array (WFCTA) of the Large High-Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO). Because of the capability of working under moonlight without aging, silicon photomultipliers (SiPM) have been proven to be not only an alternative but also an improvement to conventional photomultiplier tubes (PMT) in this application. Eighteen SiPM-based cameras with square light funnels have been built for WFCTA. The telescopes have collected more than 100 million cosmic ray events and preliminary results indicate that these cameras are capable of working under moonlight. The characteristics of the light funnels and SiPMs pose challenges (e.g. dynamic range, dark count rate, assembly techniques). In this paper, we present the design features, manufacturing techniques and performances of these cameras. Abstract: As a sub-array of the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO), KM2A is mainly designed to cover a large fraction of the northern sky to hunt for gamma-ray sources at energies above 10 TeV. Even though the detector construction is still underway, a half of the KM2A array has been operating stably since the end of 2019. In this paper, we present the pipeline of KM2A data analysis and the first observation on the Crab Nebula, a standard candle in very high energy gamma-ray astronomy. We detect gamma-ray signals from the Crab Nebula in both energy ranges of 10$-$100 TeV and $>$100 TeV with high significance, by analyzing the KM2A data of 136 live days between December 2019 and May 2020. With the observations, we test the detector performance including angular resolution, pointing accuracy and cosmic ray background rejection power. The energy spectrum of the Crab Nebula in the energy range 10-250 TeV fits well with a single power-law function dN/dE =(1.13$\pm$0.05$_{stat}$$\pm$0.08$_{sys}$)$\times$10$^{-14}$$\cdot$(E/20TeV)$^{-3.09\pm0.06_{stat}\pm0.02_{sys}}$ cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ TeV$^{-1}$. It is consistent with previous measurements by other experiments. 19. Distance and Evolutionary States of Supernova Remnant G18.9-1.1 and Candidate G28.6+0.0

Abstract: HI spectra of the supernova remnant G18.9-1.1 and the supernova remnant candidate G28.6+0.0 are analyzed. We compared the spectra to $^{13}$CO emission spectra and to spectra of HII regions in the area to determine kinematic distances. G18.9-1.1 is at 2.1$\pm$0.4 kpc and G28.6+0.0 is at 9.0$\pm$0.3 kpc from the Sun. Using published X-ray spectra of G18.9-1.1, we apply supernova remnant models for shocked-ISM temperature and emission measure. We find that G18.9-1.1 has a low, but not atypical, explosion energy of $\simeq$3$\times$10$^{50}$ erg and is in a low density region of the ISM, $\simeq$0.1 cm$^{-3}$. It has age $\simeq$3700 yr if the ejecta mass is 1.4 M$_{\odot}$, typical of Type Ia SNe, or $\simeq$4700 yr if the ejecta mass is 5 M$_{\odot}$ typical of core-collapse SN. The candidate G28.6+0.0 does not have reported X-ray emission, so we apply a basic Sedov model. The Sedov age is $\simeq$600 yr if the ISM density is 1 cm$^{-3}$ but could be as old as $\simeq$6000 yr if the ISM density is as high as 100 cm$^{-3}$., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures

Abstract: The Murchison Widefield Array (MWA) is an open access telescope dedicated to studying the low frequency (80$-$300 MHz) southern sky. Since beginning operations in mid 2013, the MWA has opened a new observational window in the southern hemisphere enabling many science areas. The driving science objectives of the original design were to observe 21\,cm radiation from the Epoch of Reionisation (EoR), explore the radio time domain, perform Galactic and extragalactic surveys, and monitor solar, heliospheric, and ionospheric phenomena. All together 60$+$ programs recorded 20,000 hours producing 146 papers to date. In 2016 the telescope underwent a major upgrade resulting in alternating compact and extended configurations. Other upgrades, including digital back-ends and a rapid-response triggering system, have been developed since the original array was commissioned. In this paper we review the major results from the prior operation of the MWA, and then discuss the new science paths enabled by the improved capabilities. 21. The kinematic distances of SNR G16.7+0.1 and G15.9+0.2 by analyzing HI absorption spectra

Abstract: We build HI absorption spectra towards Supernova Remnant (SNRs) G16.7+0.1 and G15.9+0.2 using the THOR survey data. With the absorption spectra, we give a new distance range of 7 to 16 kpc for G15.9+0.2. We also resolve the near/far-side distance ambiguity of G16,7+0.1 and confirm its kinematic distance of about 14 kpc. In addition, we analyze the CO (J=3-2) spectra towards G16.7+0.1 and find obvious CO emission at the 20 kms$^{-1}$ OH 1720 MHz maser site. This supports Reynoso and Mangum (2000)'s suggestions that the velocity difference between the maser and southern molecular cloud is caused by the shock acceleration. 22. Dust destruction in non-radiative shocks

Abstract: Supernova remnant (SNR) shock waves are the main place where interstellar dust grains are destroyed. However, the dust destruction efficiency in non-radiative shocks is still not well known. One way to estimate the fraction of dust destroyed is to compare the difference between postshock gas abundances and preshock medium total abundances when the preshock elemental depletion factors are known. We compare the postshock gas abundances of 16 SNRs in Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) with the LMC interstellar medium abundances that we derived based on 69 slow-rotating early B-type stars. We find that, on average, $\sim$61\% of Si rich dust grains are destroyed in the shock while the fraction of dust destroyed is only $\sim$40\% for Fe rich dust grains. This result supports the idea that the high depletion of Fe in the diffuse neutral medium is not caused by the resilience of Fe rich grains but because of faster growth rate. 24. Distances of Galactic Supernova Remnants Using Red Clump Stars

Abstract: We carry out a project to independently measure the distances of supernova remnants (SNRs) in the first quadrant of the Galaxy. In this project, red clump (RC) stars are used as standard candles and extinction probes to build the optical extinction (A$_V$) - distance(D) relation in each direction of extinction-known SNRs. 15 SNRs' distances are well determined. Among them, the distances of G65.8-0.5, G66.0-0.0 and G67.6+0.9 are given for the first time. We also obtain 32 upper/lower limits of distances, and the distances to G5.7-0.1, G15.1-1.6, G28.8+1.5 and G78.2+2.1 are constrained. Most of the distances measured by the RC method are consistent with previous results. 25. How does the stellar wind influence the radio morphology of a supernova remnant?

Abstract: We simulate the evolutions of the stellar wind and the supernova remnant (SNR) originating from a runaway massive star in an uniform Galactic environment based on the three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamics models. Taking the stellar wind into consideration, we can explain the radio morphologies of many supernova remnants. The directions of the kinematic velocity of the progenitor, the magnetic field and the line of sight are the most important factors influencing the morphologies. If the velocity is perpendicular to the magnetic field, the simulation will give us two different unilateral SNRs and a bilateral symmetric SNR. If the velocity is parallel to the magnetic field, we can obtain a bilateral asymmetric SNR and a quasi-circular SNR. Our simulations show the stellar wind plays a key role in the radio evolution of a SNR, which implies the Galactic global density and magnetic field distribution play a secondary role in shaping a SNR., Comment: 12pages, 35 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

26. A search for hypercompact HII regions in the Galactic Plane

Abstract: We have carried out the largest and most unbiased search for hypercompact (HC) HII regions. Our method combines four interferometric radio continuum surveys (THOR, CORNISH, MAGPIS and White2005) with far-infrared and sub-mm Galactic Plane surveys to identify embedded HII regions with positive spectral indices. 120 positive spectrum HII regions have been identified from a total sample of 534 positive spectral index radio sources. None of these HII regions, including the known HCHII regions recovered in our search, fulfills the canonical definition of an HCHII region at 5 GHz. We suggest that the current canonical definition of HCHII regions is not accurate and should be revised to include a hierarchical structure of ionized gas that results in an extended morphology at 5 GHz. Correlating our search with known ultracompact (UC) HII region surveys, we find that roughly half of detected UCHII regions have positive spectral indices, instead of more commonly assumed flat and optically thin spectra. This implies a mix of optically thin and thick emission and has important implications for previous analyses which have so far assumed optically thin emission for these objects. Positive spectrum HII regions are statistically more luminous and possess higher Lyman continuum fluxes than HII regions with flat or negative indices. Positive spectrum HII regions are thus more likely to be associated with more luminous and massive stars. Abstract: We derive the synchrotron distribution in the Milky Way disk from HII region absorption observations over -40{\deg} < l < 40{\deg} at six frequencies of 76.2, 83.8, 91.5, 99.2, 106.9, and 114.6 MHz with the GaLactic and Extragalactic All-sky Murchison widefield array survey (GLEAM). We develop a new method of emissivity calculation by taking advantage of the Haslam et al., (1981) map and known spectral indices, which enable us to simultaneously derive the emissivity and the optical depth of HII regions at each frequency. We show our derived synchrotron emissivities based on 152 absorption features of HII regions using both the method previously adopted in the literature and our improved method. We derive the synchrotron emissivity from HII regions to the Galactic edge along the line of sight and, for the first time, derive the emissivity from HII regions to the Sun. 28. Chandra Observation of PWN G16.73+0.08 in SNR G16.7+0.1

Abstract: We present X-ray observations of PWN G16.73+0.08/SNR G16.7+0.1 using archival data of {\it Chandra} ACIS. The X-ray emission peak location of this pulsar wind nebula is found to be offset by 24 arcsec from the centre of the 1.4-GHz emission of this nebula. The X-ray nebula is elongated in the direction from the X-ray peak to the 1.4-GHz emission centre. This offset suggests that G16.73+0.08 is an evolved pulsar wind nebula interacting with the supernova remnant reverse shock. We identify a point source, CXO J182058.16-142001.5, near the location of the X-ray peak. The spectrum of the X-ray nebula can be described by an absorbed power law of photon index $0.98^{+0.79}_{-0.71}$ and hydrogen column density $N_{\rm H}=4.99^{+2.75}_{-2.28}\times 10^{22}$ cm$^{-2}$. CXO J182058.16-142001.5 is likely a pulsar. We estimate its spin-down power to be about $2.6\times 10 ^{36}$ erg s$^{-1}$. Assuming its age at 3000 and 10,000 years, its dipole magnetic field strength at the polar surface is estimated to be about $4.2 \times 10^{13}$ G and $1.3 \times 10^{13}$ G, respectively., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, accepted by MNRAS on Nov 13, 2017

29. Disentangling the radio emission of the supernova remnant W51C

Abstract: We simulate the evolution of supernova remnant (SNR) W51C. The simulation shows the existence of a new northeast edge. We present magnetic field structure of the W51 complex (SNR W51C and two HII regions W51A/B) by employing the 11 cm survey data of Effelsberg. This new edge is identified and overlaps with W51A along the line of sight, which gives a new angular diameter of about 37' for the quasi-circular remnant. In addition, we assemble the OH spectral lines (1612/1665/1720 MHz) towards the complex by employing the newly released THOR (The HI OH Recombination line survey of Milky Way) data. We find that the known 1720 MHz OH maser in the W51B/C overlap area is located away from the detected 1612/1665MHz absorption region. Abstract: We report on the analysis of XMM-Newton observations of the non-thermal shell-type supernova remnant HESS J1731-347 (G353.6-0.7). For the first time the complete remnant shell has been covered in X-rays, which allowed direct comparison with radio and TeV observations. We carried out a spatially resolved spectral analysis of XMM-Newton data and confirmed the previously reported non-thermal power-law X-ray spectrum of the source with negligible variations of spectral index across the shell. On the other hand, the X-ray absorption column is strongly variable and correlates with the CO emission thus confirming that the absorbing material must be in the foreground and reinforcing the previously suggested lower limit on distance. Finally, we find that the X-ray emission of the remnant is suppressed towards the Galactic plane, which points to lower shock velocities in this region, likely due to the interaction of the shock with the nearby molecular cloud., Comment: 11 pages, accepted in A&A

Abstract: We construct \HI~absorption spectra for 18 planetary nebulae (PNe) and their background sources using the data from the International Galactic Plane Survey. We estimate the kinematic distances of these PNe, among which 15 objects' kinematic distances are obtained for the first time. The distance uncertainties of 13 PNe range from 10% to 50%, which is a significant improvement with uncertainties of a factor two or three smaller than most of previous distance measurements. 34. Suzaku observation and distance of supernova remnant G332.5-5.6

Abstract: We analyze the Suzaku XIS data of the central region of supernova remnant G332.5-5.6. The X-ray data are well described by a single non-equilibrium ionization thermal model, {\tt vnei}, with an absorbing hydrogen column density of 1.4$^{+0.4}_{-0.1}$ $\times$ 10$^{21}$ cm$^{-2}$. The plasma is characterized by an electron temperature of 0.49$^{+0.08}_{-0.06}$ keV with subsolar abundances for O (0.58$^{+0.06}_{-0.05}$ solar value) and Fe (0.72$^{+0.06}_{-0.05}$ solar value) and slightly overabundance for Mg (1.23$^{+0.14}_{-0.14}$ solar value). It seems that the central X-ray emission originates from projection effect or evaporation of residual clouds inside G332.5-5.6. We estimate a distance of 3.0 $\pm$ 0.8 kpc for G332.5-5.6 based on the extinction-distance relation. G332.5-5.6 has an age of 7 - 9 kyr., Comment: accepted by MNRAS

36. Supernova remnant W49B and its environment

Abstract: We study Gamma-ray supernova remnant W49B and its environment using recent radio and infrared data. {\it Spitzer} IRS low resolution data of W49B shows shocked excitation lines of H$_{2}$ (0,0) S(0)-S(7) from the SNR-molecular cloud interaction. The H$_2$ gas is composed of two components with temperature of $\sim$260 K and $\sim$1060 K respectively. Various spectral lines from atomic and ionic particles are detected towards W49B. We suggest the ionic phase has an electron density of $\sim$500 cm${}^{-3}$ and a temperature of $\sim$${10^4}$ K by the spectral line diagnoses. The mid- and far-infrared data from {\it MSX}, {\it Spitzer} and {\it Herschel} reveals a 151 $\pm$ 20 K hot dust component with a mass of 7.5 $\pm$ 6.6 $\times$ ${10}^{-4} {\Msol}$ and a 45 $\pm$ 4 K warm dust component with a mass of 6.4 $\pm$ 3.2 ${\Msol}$. The hot dust is likely from materials swept up by the shock of W49B. The warm dust may possibly originate from the evaporation of clouds interacting with W49B. We build the HI absorption spectra of W49B and nearby four {\HII} regions (W49A, G42.90+0.58, G42.43-0.26 and G43.19-0.53), and study the relation between W49B and the surrounding molecular clouds by employing the 2.12 $\mu$m infrared and CO data. We therefore obtain a kinematic distance of $\sim$10 kpc for W49B and suggest that the remnant is likely associated with the CO cloud at about 40 km s$^{-1}$., Comment: 11 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

37. SNR G349.7+0.2: A gamma-ray source in the far 3 kpc arm of the Galactic center

Abstract: We analyze the HI absorption profile for TeV Supernova Remnant (SNR) G349.7+0.2 based on updated knowledge of the inner Galaxy's structure. We significantly revise its kinematic distance from the previous ~ 22 kpc to ~11.5 kpc, indicating it is in the far 3 kpc arm of the Galactic center. We give a revised age of ~ 1800 year for G349.7+0.2 which has a low explosion energy of ~ 2.5 x 10^50 ergs. This removes G349.7+0.2 from the set of brightest SNRs in radio, X-ray to gamma-ray wavebands and helps understand gamma-ray emission originating from this remnant better. However, one needs to use caution for old kinematic distances of Galactic objects (e.g. SNRs, Pulsars and HII regions) in the range of -12 degree =< l =< 12 degree and having distance estimates of >= 5.5 kpc., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures. Abstract: Two possible planetary nebulae (PN G035.5-00.4 and IRAS 18551+0159), one newly re-identified supernova remnant (SNR G35.6-0.4), and one HII region (G35.6-0.5) form a line-of-sight-overlapped complex known as G35.6-0.5. We analyze 21 cm HI absorption spectra towards the complex to constrain their kinematic distances. PN G035.5-00.4 has a distance from 3.8+/-0.4 kpc to 5.4+/-0.7 kpc. IRAS 18551+0159 is at 4.3+/-0.5 kpc. We discuss the distance for SNR 35.6-0.4, for which the previous estimate was 10.5 kpc, and find plausible for it to be 3.6+/-0.4 kpc. The new distance of SNR G35.6-0.4 and the derived mass for the ~55 km/s CO molecular cloud can accommodate an association with HESS J1858+020. We also conclude that SNR G35.6-0.4 is unlikely associated with PSR J1857+0210 or PSR J1857+0212, which are projected into the SNR area., Comment: 10 pages, 21 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

39. High velocity HI is not associated with TeV supernova remnant W51C

Abstract: The recently-detected TeV gamma-ray source HESS J1923+141 coincides with Supernova Remnant (SNR) W51C and the star forming region W51B of the W51 complex. We construct HI absorption spectra to SNR W51C, HII regions G49.2-0.35 and G49.1-0.38 in W51B, and a nearby compact extragalactic source. Our study detects high-velocity (HV) HI clouds (above 83 km/s) which coincide with W51B, but finds that the clouds are behind W51B. Both W51C and G49.2-0.35 have have similar highest-velocity absorption features at ~70 km/s. The HII region G49.1-0.38 is behind the SNR because its HI absorption spectrum has a feature at 83 km/s. These new results argue against previous claims that the SNR has shocked the HV HI clouds. Therefore the TeV emission from the complex should not be associated with the HV HI clouds. W51C has a distance of about 4.3 kpc, smaller than the tangent point distance of 5.5 kpc in that direction, but still in the Sagittarius spiral arm., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, ApJ Letters, in press

40. PSRs J0248+6021 and J2240+5832: Young Pulsars in the Northern Galactic Plane. Discovery, Timing, and Gamma-ray observations

Abstract: Pulsars PSR J0248+6021 (rotation period P=217 ms and spin-down power Edot = 2.13E35 erg/s) and PSR J2240+5832 (P=140 ms, Edot = 2.12E35 erg/s) were discovered in 1997 with the Nancay radio telescope during a northern Galactic plane survey, using the Navy-Berkeley Pulsar Processor (NBPP) filter bank. GeV gamma-ray pulsations from both were discovered using the Fermi Large Area Telescope. Twelve years of radio and polarization data allow detailed investigations. The two pulsars resemble each other both in radio and in gamma-ray data. Both are rare in having a single gamma-ray pulse offset far from the radio peak. The high dispersion measure for PSR J0248+6021 (DM = 370 pc cm^-3) is most likely due to its being within the dense, giant HII region W5 in the Perseus arm at a distance of 2 kpc, not beyond the edge of the Galaxy as obtained from models of average electron distributions. Its high transverse velocity and the low magnetic field along the line-of-sight favor this small distance. Neither gamma-ray, X-ray, nor optical data yield evidence for a pulsar wind nebula surrounding PSR J0248+6021. The gamma-ray luminosity for PSR J0248+6021 is L_ gamma = (1.4 \pm 0.3)\times 10^34 erg/s. For PSR J2240+5832, we find either L_gamma = (7.9 \pm 5.2) \times 10^34 erg/s if the pulsar is in the Outer arm, or L_gamma = (2.2 \pm 1.7) \times 10^34 erg/s for the Perseus arm. These luminosities are consistent with an L_gamma ~ sqrt(Edot) rule. Comparison of the gamma-ray pulse profiles with model predictions, including the constraints obtained from radio polarization data, favor emission in the far magnetosphere. Abstract: We present new results of the HESS J1731-347/SNR G353.6-0.7 system from XMM-NEWTOM and Suzaku X-ray observations, and Delinha CO observations. We discover extended hard X-rays coincident with the bright, extended TeV source HESS J1731-347 and the shell of the radio SNR. We find that spatially-resolved X-ray spectra can generally be characterized by an absorbed power-law model, with photon-index of ~ 2, typical of non-thermal emission. A bright X-ray compact source, XMMS J173203-344518, is also detected near the center of the SNR. We find no evidence of a radio counterpart or an extended X-ray morphology for this source, making it unlikely to be a pulsar wind nebular (PWN). The spectrum of the source can be well fitted by an absorbed blackbody with a temperature of ~ 0.5 keV plus a power-law tail with a photon-index of ~ 5, reminiscent of the X-ray emission of a magnetar. CO observations toward the inner part of the HESS source reveal a bright cloud component at -20+/-4 km s^{-1}, which is likely located at the same distance of ~ 3.2 kpc as the SNR. Based on the probable association between the X-ray and $\gamma$-ray emissions and likely association between the CO cloud and the SNR, we argue that the extended TeV emission originates from the interaction between the SNR shock and the adjacent CO clouds rather than from a PWN., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figs, 2 tables. 43. Distance Determination to the Crab-like PWN G54.1+0.3 and Search for its Supernova Remnant Shell

Abstract: We discover a large-scale shell G53.9+0.2 around the Crab-like pulsar wind nebula (PWN) G54.1+0.3 with 1420 MHz continuum VLA observations. This is confirmed by a new infrared image at 8 \mu m from the GLIMPSE Legacy Project, which reveals an intriguing infrared shell just surrounding the large radio shell. We analyze the 21 cm HI absorption spectra and 13CO emission spectra towards PWN G54.1+0.3 and bright sources on both radio and IR shells. Continuous HI absorption up to the tangent point and absence of negative HI absorption features imply that PWN G54.1+0.3 has a distance beyond the tangent point but within the Solar circle, i.e. 4.5 to 9 kpc. G54.1+0.3 is likely at distance of \simeq 6.2 kpc due to the morphological association between the PWN and a CO molecular cloud at velocity of \simeq 53 km/s, as revealed by high-resolution 13CO images. Based on the HI absorption spectrum and recombination line velocity (\simeq 40 km/s) of the bright HII region G54.09-0.06, which is on the IR shell, the IR shell is likely located at a distance of \simeq 7.3 kpc, which is also the distance of the associated large-scale radio shell. At this distance, the radio shell has a radius of ~ 30 pc. The radio shell may be thermal and lack IR emission due to dust destruction, or it may be nonthermal and part of a newly found old SNR. 44. Discovery of the radio and X-ray counterpart of TeV Gamma-ray source HESS J1731-347

Abstract: We discover a faint shell-type radio and X-ray source, G353.6-0.7, associated with HESS J1731-347. G353.6-0.7 is likely an old supernova remnant (SNR), based on radio (0.8 GHz, 1.4 GHz and 5 GHz), infrared (8 $\mu$m from the GLIMPSE Legacy Project and 21 $\mu$m from the Midcourse Space Experiment), and X-ray (0.1 keV - 2.4 keV from the ROSAT survey and 5 - 20 keV from the INTEGRAL survey) data. The SNR, centered at ({\sl l}, {\sl b})=(353.55, -0.65) with a radius of $\sim$ 0.25$^{\circ}$, closely matches the outline of the recently discovered extended TeV source HESS J1731-347, which has no previously identified counterpart. A diffuse X-ray enhancement detected in the ROSAT all-sky survey is coincident with lower half shell of the SNR. Therefore the SNR is the best radio counterpart of both the HESS source and the diffuse X-ray enhancement. G353.6-0.7 has an age of $\sim$ 27000 yrs. 45. Radio and X-ray images of SNR G18.8+0.3 interacting with molecular clouds

Abstract: New HI images from the VLA Galactic Plane Survey (VGPS) show clear absorption features associated with the supernova remnant (SNR) G18.8+0.3. High-resolution $^{13}$CO images reveal that molecular clouds overlap the radio filaments of G18.8+0.3. The $^{13}$CO emission spectrum over the full velocity range in the direction of G18.8+0.3 shows two molecular components with high brightness-temperatureand three molecular components with low brightness-temperature, all with respective HI absorption. This implies that these clouds are in front of G18.8+0.3. In the HI images, the highest velocity absorption feature seen against the continuum image of G18.8+0.3 is at 129 km s$^{-1}$, which corresponds to the tangent point in this direction. This yields a lower distance limit of 6.9 kpc for G18.8+0.3. Absence of absorption at negative velocities gives an upper distance limit of 15 kpc. The broadened profile at 20$\pm$5 km s$^{-1}$ in the $^{13}$CO emission spectra is a strong indicator of a possible SNR/CO cloud interaction. Thus, G18.8+0.3 is likely to be at the distance of about 12 kpc. The upper mass limit and mean density of the giant CO cloud at 20$\pm$5 km s$^{-1}$ are \sim 6 \times 10^{5} M_{\odot} and \sim 2 \times 10^{2} cm^{-3}. We find an atomic hydrogen column density in front of G18.8+0.3 of $N_{HI}$ \sim 2 \times 10^{22} cm^{-2}. The ROSAT PSPC observations show a diffuse X-ray enhancement apparently associated with part of the radio shell of G18.8+0.3. Assuming an association, the unabsorbed flux is 2.2 \times10^{-12} erg cm^{-2} s^{-1}, suggesting an intrinsic luminosity of 3.6 \times 10^{34} erg s^{-1} for G18.8+0.3., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures, two tables, accepted by A&A

46. Discovery of A New Faint Radio SNR G108.2-0.6

Abstract: A new faint and large shell-type radio Supernova Remnant (SNR) G108.2-0.6 has been discovered in the Canadian Galactic Plane Survey (CGPS). The SNR shows an elliptical shell-type structure at 1420 MHz, and has a 408-1420 MHz TT-plot spectral index of $\alpha$=-0.5$\pm$0.1 (S$_{\nu}$$\propto$$\nu$$^{\alpha}$), typical of a shell-type SNR. The remnant's flux density at 1420 MHz is 6.6$\pm$0.7 Jy, and at 408 MHz is 11.5$\pm$1.2 Jy. Both of these are corrected for compact sources. An integrated spectral index of $-0.45\pm$0.13 is determined. This new SNR has among the lowest surface brightness of any known remnant ($\Sigma$$_{1 GHz}$=2.4$\times10^{-22}$ W m$^{-2}$ Hz$^{-1}$ sr$^{-1}$). 21 cm Stokes Q and U CGPS data (plus preliminary Effelsberg Q and U maps) show some suggestive features that correlate with total power. \ion{H}{i} observations show structures associated with G108.2$-$0.6 in the radial velocity range $-$53 to $-$58 km s$^{-1}$, and indicate it is located in the Perseus arm shock at a distance of 3.2$\pm$0.6 kpc. At this distance the diameter of G108.2$-$0.6 is 58 pc. 47. VLA and XMM-Newton observations of the SNR W41/TeV Gamma-ray source HESS J1834-087

Abstract: The recently discovered extended TeV source HESS J1834-087 is associated with both a diffuse X-ray enhancement and a molecular cloud, projected at the center of an old radio supernova remnant G23.3-0.3 (SNR W41). New HI observations from the VLA Galactic Plane Survey (VGPS) show unambiguous structures associated with W41 in the radial velocity range of 53 to 63 km/s, so we obtain for W41 a distance of 4+-0.2 kpc. A new higher sensitivity VGPS continuum image of W41 at 1420 MHz shows faint emission in its eastern part not detected by previous observations, so we give a new angular size of 36'x30' in b-l direction (average radius of 19 pc). We estimate for W41 a Sedov age of ~10e5 yr. New XMM-Newton observation reveals diffuse X-ray emission within the HESS source and suggests an association between the X-ray and Gamma-ray emission. The high-resolution ^{13}CO images of W41 further reveal a giant molecular cloud (GMC) located at the center of W41, likely associated with W41 in the the radial velocity range of 61 to 66 km/s. 48. Characteristics of supernova remnant G351.7+0.8 and a distance argument against its association with PSR J1721-3532

Abstract: New images of the supernova remnant (SNR) G351.7+0.8 are presented based on 21cm HI-line emission and continuum emission data from the Southern Galactic Plane Survey (SGPS). SNR G351.7+0.8 has a flux density of 8.4+-0.7 Jy at 1420 MHz. Its spectral index is 0.52+-0.25 (S=v^{-alpha}) between 1420 MHz and 843 MHz, typical of adiabatically expanding shell-like remnants. HI observations show structures possibly associated with the SNR in the radial velocity range of -10 to -18 km/s, and suggest a distance of 13.2 kpc and a radius of 30.7 pc. The estimated Sedov age for G351.7+0.8 is less than 6.8 x 10^{4} yrs. A young radio pulsar PSR J1721-3532 lies close to SNR G351.7+0.8 on the sky. The new distance and age of G351.7+0.8 and recent proper-motion measurements of the pulsar strongly argue against an association between SNR G351.7+0.8 and PSR J1721-3532. There is an unidentified, faint X-ray point source 1RXS J172055.3-353937 which is close to G351.7+0.8. 49. Radio Spectrum and Distance of the SNR HB9

Abstract: New images are presented of the supernova remnant (SNR) HB9 based on 408 MHz and 1420 MHz continuum emission and HI-line emission data of the Canadian Galactic Plane Survey (CGPS) by the Dominion Radio Astrophysical Observatory (DRAO). Two methods of spectral index analysis for HB9 are presented and compared: one removes compact sources at both frequencies but is limited to the resolution of the 408 MHz image; the other removes compact sources only in the 1420 MHz image so is effective at higher spatial resolution. The second allows more detailed spectral index variation studies than the first. The two T-T plot methods and new integrated flux densities give spectral index (S_{\nu}\propto\nu^{-alpha}) for the whole of HB9 of 0.48+-0.03; and 0.47+-0.06, respectively. These are lower than previous spectral index for HB9 (alpha=0.61). Spatial variations of spectral index are derived using the second method and yield a steeper spectral index for interior regions than for the rim. This can be explained by a standard curved interstellar electron energy spectrum combined with lower interior magnetic field compared to that near the outer shock, which results in a larger proportion of steep spectrum emission for lines-of-sight through the central body of the SNR. HI observations show structures probably associated with the SNR in the radial velocity range -3 to -9 km/s and suggest a distance of 0.8+-0.4 kpc for the SNR. This is consistent with the distance to the radio pulsar 0458+46, offset from the center of HB9 by 23'. 50. The radio SNR G65.1+0.6 and its associated pulsar J1957+2831

Abstract: New images of the radio Supernova Remnant (SNR) G65.1+0.6 are presented, based on the 408 MHz and 1420 MHz continuum emission and the HI-line emission data of the Canadian Galactic Plane Survey (CGPS). A large shell-like structure seen in the 2695 MHz Effelsberg map appears to have nonthermal spectral index. HI observations show structures associated with the SNR G65.1+0.6 in the radial velocity range of -20 to -26 km$/$s and suggest a distance of 9.2 kpc for the SNR. The estimated Sedov age for G65.1+0.6 is 4 - 14 x10E4 yr. The pulsar (PSR) J1957+2831 is possibly associated with G65.1+0.6, with consistent distance and kinematic age estimate, but different characteristic age than the SNR. The EGRET source 3EG J1958+2909 and gamma-ray source 2CG 065+00 are also near the eastern edge of the SNR but do not agree in position with the pulsar and are likely not associated with the SNR. The SNR's flux densities at 408 MHz (8.6+-0.8 Jy), 1420 MHz (4.9+-0.5 Jy) and 2695 MHz (3.3+-0.5 Jy) have been corrected for flux densities from compact sources within the SNR. The integrated flux density based spectral index between 1420 MHz and 408 MHz is 0.45+-0.11 and agrees with the T-T plot spectral index of 0.34+-0.20.
