This study describes parents' daily "highs" and "lows" during their child's transition to school for the first time and examines how those experiences relate to turbulence in the parents' relationship. 106 parents (53 couples) rated their relationship qualities at pre-test and post-test and described "high" and "low" points of their day every three days for 42 days. Content analysis revealed experiences contributing to "high" or "low" points that were primarily related to: the child with ASD, the spouse, other children, personal situations, and other. Latent profile analysis identified three profiles that represented the relationship experiences of couples in the study: "resilient" couples, couples "getting by," and "asymmetrically engaged" couples. Results highlight the variety of daily experiences these parents encounter.

BackgroundIn the aftermath of bereavement, our research explores the subtleties of Prolonged Grief Disorder (PGD), focusing particularly on its correlation with suicidal behaviors and their variation across genders. This study seeks to elucidate the impact of gender on these behaviors among individuals suffering from PGD, thereby enhancing our understanding and facilitating the development of tailored therapeutic interventions.MethodsBy November 24th, 2023, we had rigorously reviewed key databases such as PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, PsycINFO, and Embase. Independently, two researchers conducted detailed interviews and filled out questionnaires with participants to gather demographic information and record instances of prolonged grief disorder. The study also meticulously tracked occurrences of suicidal ideation, suicide attempts, suicide deaths, and self-injury among the participants.ResultsThe findings indicate that 22.34% of males reported suicidal ideation (95% CI: 21.33–23.35), a figure that rises to 26.84% among females (95% CI: 25.99–27.69). Notably, 12.11% of males attempted suicide (95% CI: 11.49–12.72), marginally surpassing the 9.60% observed in females (95% CI: 9.17–10.04). More striking disparities were observed in suicide deaths, with rates for males at 3.66% (95% CI: 3.32–4.00) compared to a notably higher 7.12% for females (95% CI: 6.44–7.81). Furthermore, the incidence of self-injury was lower among males, at 2.48% (95% CI: 2.03–2.94), than in females, who reported a rate of 5.09% (95% CI: 4.69–5.49). These patterns underscore the critical need for gender-specific interventions aimed at reducing these significant disparities.ConclusionThis study distinctly underscores the profound impact of gender on the manifestation of suicidal behaviors in individuals afflicted with prolonged grief disorder. It reveals that females are more prone to suicidal ideation, self-injury, and suicide deaths, while males predominantly exhibit a higher incidence of suicide attempts and risk-taking behaviors. These unmediated trends highlight the necessity for gender-specific clinical interventions tailored to address particular behaviors and modify prevalent patterns that typically resist conventional approaches.Systematic review registrationPROSPERO (york.ac.uk), identifier CRD42023480035.

This article presents the synthesis and design of 3-D microwave absorber with 70° angular stability for C-band and X-band. The operating principle is firstly investigated, where the absorber is considered as an energy convertor. With the help of our proposed universal equivalent transmission line (TL) model, the absorptive performance can be accordingly synthesized. Then, a design method for efficient absorption under large angles is presented. By selecting a proper synthesized angle (SA), the angular stability can be effectively improved. After that, the prototype with 70° angular stability is designed as an example with structural realization and practical implementation. Measurements agree well with synthesized and simulated results, successfully verifying the proposed design method. For specific C-band and X-band applications, the measured average absorption ratios (ARs) under normal incidence, 45° incidence, and 70° incidence are 94.2%, 94.0%, and 92.3%. Minimum measured ARs within the operating bandwidth are 88.4%, 81.5%, and 82.0% for normal, 45°, and 70° incidences. Besides, the proposed absorber element owns the advantage of simple structure with only one resistor. Such a class of microwave absorber is a potential candidate for wide coverage electromagnetic absorption.

Purpose: Mannitol is one of the first-line drugs for reducing cerebral edema through increasing the extracellular osmotic pressure. However, long-term administration of mannitol in the treatment of cerebral edema triggers damage to neurons and astrocytes. Given that neural stem cell (NSC) is a subpopulation of main regenerative cells in the central nervous system after injury, the effect of mannitol on NSC is still elusive. The present study aims to elucidate the role of mannitol in NSC proliferation. Methods: C57 mice were derived from the animal house of Zunyi Medical University. A total of 15 pregnant mice were employed for the purpose of isolating NSCs in this investigation. Initially, mouse primary NSCs were isolated from the embryonic cortex of mice and subsequently identified through immunofluorescence staining. In order to investigate the impact of mannitol on NSC proliferation, both cell counting kit-8 assays and neurospheres formation assays were conducted. The in vitro effects of mannitol were examined at various doses and time points. In order to elucidate the role of Aquaporin 4 (AQP4) in the suppressive effect of mannitol on NSC proliferation, various assays including reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction, western blotting, and immunocytochemistry were conducted on control and mannitol-treated groups. Additionally, the phosphorylated p38 (p-p38) was examined to explore the potential mechanism underlying the inhibitory effect of mannitol on NSC proliferation. Finally, to further confirm the involvement of the p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase-dependent (MAPK) signaling pathway in the observed inhibition of NSC proliferation by mannitol, SB203580 was employed. All data were analyzed using SPSS 20.0 software (SPSS, Inc., Chicago, IL). The statistical analysis among multiple comparisons was performed using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), followed by Turkey's post hoc test in case of the data following a normal distribution using a Shapiro-Wilk normality test. Comparisons between 2 groups were determined using Student's t-test, if the data exhibited a normal distribution using a Shapiro-Wilk normality test. ObjectiveTo detect brain alterations in intensive care unit (ICU) patients who develop delirium using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and to determine their predictive value.MethodsFifty-two patients who were admitted to the ICU of the Affiliated Hospital of Zunyi Medical University between June 2021 and June 2022 were enrolled. Fifteen patients who were diagnosed with delirium by the Intensive Care Delirium Screening Checklist (ICDSC) after MRI were selected as the delirium group, and 15 healthy volunteers who were examined during the same period served as the control group. Both groups underwent fMRI and DTI. Quantitative fMRI and DTI data were compared between the two groups to detect abnormal structural and functional brain damage. The relationships between MRI outliers and clinical indicators in the delirium group were also assessed.ResultsDemographic characteristics and imaging indicators before delirium were not correlated with ICDSC scores after delirium. Compared with the healthy control group, the delirium group had significantly lower regional homogeneity (ReHo) values in the left caudate nucleus and frontal lobe on fMRI. The amplitude of the low-frequency fluctuations (ALFF) values of the delirium group were significantly increased in the hippocampus but significantly decreased in the frontal lobe. Compared with the healthy control group, the delirium group showed reduced mean diffusivity (MD) values, mainly in the right cerebellum and right middle temporal gyrus; reduced radial diffusivity (RD) values, mainly in the anterior cerebellum and right middle temporal gyrus; reduced fractional anisotropy (FA) values, only in the corpus callosum; and reduced axial diffusivity (AD) values, mainly in the anterior cerebellar lobe, right middle temporal gyrus, and left middle frontal gyrus on DTI. The statistical thresholds for quantitative DTI measurements were p < 0.005 at the voxel level and a cluster size > 5.ConclusionAbnormal resting-state brain activity in the left superior frontal gyrus and structural changes in the frontal lobe, temporal lobe, corpus callosum, hippocampus, and cerebellum were observed in ICU patients who developed delirium during hospitalization. Early-brain fMRI and DTI examinations are recommended for the prediction of delirium according to unique quantitative indicators to facilitate early intervention for critically ill patients, reduce the length of hospital stay, and improve patient prognosis.

Abstract Background Extravillous trophoblast cell (EVT) differentiation and its communication with maternal decidua especially the leading immune cell type natural killer (NK) cell are critical events for placentation. However, appropriate in vitro modelling system and regulatory programs of these two events are still lacking. Recent trophoblast organoid (TO) has advanced the molecular and mechanistic research in placentation. Here, we firstly generated the self-renewing TO from human placental villous and differentiated it into EVTs (EVT-TO) for investigating the differentiation events. We then co-cultured EVT-TO with freshly isolated decidual NKs for further study of cell communication. TO modelling of EVT differentiation as well as EVT interaction with dNK might cast new aspect for placentation research. Results Single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) was applied for comprehensive characterization and molecular exploration of TOs modelling of EVT differentiation and interaction with dNKs. Multiple distinct trophoblast states and dNK subpopulations were identified, representing CTB, STB, EVT, dNK1/2/3 and dNKp. Lineage trajectory and Seurat mapping analysis identified the close resemblance of TO and EVT-TO with the human placenta characteristic. Transcription factors regulatory network analysis revealed the cell-type specific essential TFs for controlling EVT differentiation. CellphoneDB analysis predicted the ligand-receptor complexes in dNK-EVT-TO co-cultures, which relate to cytokines, immunomodulation and angiogenesis. EVT was known to affect the immune properties of dNK. Our study found out that on the other way around, dNKs could exert effects on EVT causing expression changes which are functionally important. Conclusion Our study documented a single-cell atlas for TO and its applications on EVT differentiation and communications with dNKs, and thus provide methodology and novel research cues for future study of human placentation.
