In this paper, we consider a class of discontinuous Galerkin (DG) methods for one-dimensional nonlocal diffusion (ND) problems. The nonlocal models, which are integral equations, are widely used in describing many physical phenomena with long-range interactions. The ND problem is the nonlocal analog of the classic diffusion problem, and as the interaction radius (horizon) vanishes, then the nonlocality disappears and the ND problem converges to the classic diffusion problem. Under certain conditions, the exact solution to the ND problem may exhibit discontinuities, setting it apart from the classic diffusion problem. Since the DG method shows its great advantages in resolving problems with discontinuities in computational fluid dynamics over the past several decades, it is natural to adopt the DG method to compute the ND problems. Based on [Du-Ju-Lu-Tian-CAMC2020], we develop the DG methods with different penalty terms, ensuring that the proposed DG methods have local counterparts as the horizon vanishes. This indicates the proposed methods will converge to the existing DG schemes as the horizon vanishes, which is crucial for achieving asymptotic compatibility. Rigorous proofs are provided to demonstrate the stability, error estimates, and asymptotic compatibility of the proposed DG schemes. To observe the effect of the nonlocal diffusion, we also consider the time-dependent convection-diffusion problems with nonlocal diffusion. We conduct several numerical experiments, including accuracy tests and Burgers' equation with nonlocal diffusion, and various horizons are taken to show the good performance of the proposed algorithm and validate the theoretical findings.

The classical Fokker-Planck equation (FPE) is a key tool in physics for describing systems influenced by drag forces and Gaussian noise, with applications spanning multiple fields. We consider the fractional Fokker-Planck equation (FFPE), which models the time evolution of probability densities for systems driven by L\'evy processes, relevant in scenarios where Gaussian assumptions fail. The paper presents an efficient and accurate numerical approach for the free-space FFPE with constant coefficients and Dirac-delta initial conditions. This method utilizes the integral representation of the solutions and enables the efficient handling of very high-dimensional problems using fast algorithms. Our work is the first to present a high-precision numerical solver for the free-space FFPE with Dirac-delta initial conditions. This opens the door for future research on more complex scenarios, including those with variable coefficients and other types of initial conditions., Comment: 34 pages, 8 figures

We prove two compactness results for function spaces with finite Dirichlet energy of half-space nonlocal gradients. In each of these results, we provide sufficient conditions on a sequence of kernel functions that guarantee the asymptotic compact embedding of the associated nonlocal function spaces into the class of square-integrable functions. Moreover, we will demonstrate that the sequence of nonlocal function spaces converges in an appropriate sense to a limiting function space. As an application, we prove uniform Poincar\'e-type inequalities for sequence of half-space gradient operators. We also apply the compactness result to demonstrate the convergence of appropriately parameterized nonlocal heterogeneous anisotropic diffusion problems. We will construct asymptotically compatible schemes for these type of problems. Another application concerns the convergence and robust discretization of a nonlocal optimal control problem.

We present a study on asymptotically compatible Galerkin discretizations for a class of parametrized nonlinear variational problems. The abstract analytical framework is based on variational convergence, or Gamma-convergence. We demonstrate the broad applicability of the theoretical framework by developing asymptotically compatible finite element discretizations of some representative nonlinear nonlocal variational problems on a bounded domain. These include nonlocal nonlinear problems with classically-defined, local boundary constraints through heterogeneous localization at the boundary, as well as nonlocal problems posed on parameter-dependent domains.

The paper introduces a new meshfree pseudospectral method based on Gaussian radial basis functions (RBFs) collocation to solve fractional Poisson equations. Hypergeometric functions are used to represent the fractional Laplacian of Gaussian RBFs, enabling an efficient computation of stiffness matrix entries. Unlike existing RBF-based methods, our approach ensures a Toeplitz structure in the stiffness matrix with equally spaced RBF centers, enabling efficient matrix-vector multiplications using fast Fourier transforms. We conduct a comprehensive study on the shape parameter selection, addressing challenges related to ill-conditioning and numerical stability. The main contribution of our work includes rigorous stability analysis and error estimates of the Gaussian RBF collocation method, representing a first attempt at the rigorous analysis of RBF-based methods for fractional PDEs to the best of our knowledge. We conduct numerical experiments to validate our analysis and provide practical insights for implementation.

We develop a machine learning approach to identifying parameters with steady-state solutions, locating such solutions, and determining their linear stability for systems of ordinary differential equations and dynamical systems with parameters. Our approach begins with the construction of target functions that can be used to identify parameters with steady-state solution and the linear stability of such solutions. We design a parameter-solution neural network (PSNN) that couples a parameter neural network and a solution neural network to approximate the target function, and develop efficient algorithms to train the PSNN and to locate steady-state solutions. We also present a theory of approximation of the target function by our PSNN based on the neural network kernel decomposition. Numerical results are reported to show that our approach is robust in identifying the phase boundaries separating different regions in the parameter space corresponding to no solution or different numbers of solutions and in classifying the stability of solutions. These numerical results also validate our analysis. Although the primary focus in this study centers on steady states of parameterized dynamical systems, our approach is applicable generally to finding solutions for parameterized nonlinear systems of algebraic equations. Some potential improvements and future work are discussed.

This work contributes to nonlocal vector calculus as an indispensable mathematical tool for the study of nonlocal models that arises in a variety of applications. We define the nonlocal half-ball gradient, divergence and curl operators with general kernel functions (integrable or fractional type with finite or infinite supports) and study the associated nonlocal vector identities. We study the nonlocal function space on bounded domains associated with zero Dirichlet boundary conditions and the half-ball gradient operator and show it is a separable Hilbert space with smooth functions dense in it. A major result is the nonlocal Poincar\'e inequality, based on which a few applications are discussed, and these include applications to nonlocal convection-diffusion, nonlocal correspondence model of linear elasticity, and nonlocal Helmholtz decomposition on bounded domains.

We design a monotone meshfree finite difference method for linear elliptic equations in the non-divergence form on point clouds via a nonlocal relaxation method. The key idea is a novel combination of a nonlocal integral relaxation of the PDE problem with a robust meshfree discretization on point clouds. Minimal positive stencils are obtained through a local $l_1$-type optimization procedure that automatically guarantees the stability and, therefore, the convergence of the meshfree discretization for linear elliptic equations. A major theoretical contribution is the existence of consistent and positive stencils for a given point cloud geometry. We provide sufficient conditions for the existence of positive stencils by finding neighbors within an ellipse (2d) or ellipsoid (3d) surrounding each interior point, generalizing the study for Poisson's equation by Seibold (Comput Methods Appl Mech Eng 198(3-4):592-601, 2008). It is well-known that wide stencils are in general needed for constructing consistent and monotone finite difference schemes for linear elliptic equations. Our result represents a significant improvement in the stencil width estimate for positive-type finite difference methods for linear elliptic equations in the near-degenerate regime (when the ellipticity constant becomes small), compared to previously known works in this area. Numerical algorithms and practical guidance are provided with an eye on the case of small ellipticity constant. At the end, we present numerical results for the performance of our method in both 2d and 3d, examining a range of ellipticity constants including the near-degenerate regime., Comment: 36 pages, 16 figures

For some spatially nonlocal diffusion models with a finite range of nonlocal interactions measured by a positive parameter $\delta$, we review their formulation defined on a bounded domain subject to various conditions that correspond to some inhomogeneous data. We consider their consistency to similar inhomogeneous boundary value problems of classical partial differential equation (PDE) models as the nonlocal interaction kernel gets localized in the local $\delta\to 0$ limit, and at the same time, for rescaled fractional type kernels, to corresponding inhomogeneous nonlocal boundary value problems of fractional equations in the global $\delta\to \infty$ limit. In this work we aim to develop a unified mathematical framework and a reliable computational approach to model the brittle fracture in heterogeneous materials with variability in material microstructures, and to provide statistic metrics for quantities of interest, such as the fracture toughness. To depict the material responses and naturally describe the nucleation and growth of fractures, we consider the peridynamics model. In particular, a stochastic state-based peridynamic model is developed, where the micromechanical parameters are modeled by a finite-dimensional random vector, or a combination of random variables truncating the Karhunen-Lo\`{e}ve decomposition or the principle component analysis (PCA). To solve this stochastic peridynamic problem, probabilistic collocation method (PCM) is employed to sample the random field representing the micromechanical parameters. For each sample, the deterministic peridynamic problem is discretized with an optimization-based meshfree quadrature rule. We present rigorous analysis for the proposed scheme and demonstrate its convergence for a number of benchmark problems, showing that it sustains the asymptotic compatibility spatially and achieves an algebraic or sub-exponential convergence rate in the random space as the number of collocation points grows. Finally, to validate the applicability of this approach on real-world fracture problems, we consider the problem of crystallization toughening in glass-ceramic materials, in which the material at the microstructural scale contains both amorphous glass and crystalline phases. The proposed stochastic peridynamic solver is employed to capture the crack initiation and growth for glass-ceramics with different crystal volume fractions, and the averaged fracture toughness are calculated. The numerical estimates of fracture toughness show good consistency with experimental measurements.

Casting nonlocal problems in variational form and discretizing them with the finite element (FE) method facilitates the use of nonlocal vector calculus to prove well-posedeness, convergence, and stability of such schemes. Employing an FE method also facilitates meshing of complicated domain geometries and coupling with FE methods for local problems. However, nonlocal weak problems involve the computation of a double-integral, which is computationally expensive and presents several challenges. In particular, the inner integral of the variational form associated with the stiffness matrix is defined over the intersections of FE mesh elements with a ball of radius $\delta$, where $\delta$ is the range of nonlocal interaction. Identifying and parameterizing these intersections is a nontrivial computational geometry problem. In this work, we propose a quadrature technique where the inner integration is performed using quadrature points distributed over the full ball, without regard for how it intersects elements, and weights are computed based on the generalized moving least squares method. Thus, as opposed to all previously employed methods, our technique does not require element-by-element integration and fully circumvents the computation of element-ball intersections. This paper considers one- and two-dimensional implementations of piecewise linear continuous FE approximations, focusing on the case where the element size h and the nonlocal radius $\delta$ are proportional, as is typical of practical computations. When boundary conditions are treated carefully and the outer integral of the variational form is computed accurately, the proposed method is asymptotically compatible in the limit of $h \sim \delta \to 0$, featuring at least first-order convergence in L^2 for all dimensions, using both uniform and nonuniform grids., Comment: 59 pages, 21 figures

We present a Petrov-Gelerkin (PG) method for a class of nonlocal convection-dominated diffusion problems. There are two main ingredients in our approach. First, we define the norm on the test space as induced by the trial space norm, i.e., the optimal test norm, so that the inf-sup condition can be satisfied uniformly independent of the problem. We show the well-posedness of a class of nonlocal convection-dominated diffusion problems under the optimal test norm with general assumptions on the nonlocal diffusion and convection kernels. Second, following the framework of Cohen et al.~(2012), we embed the original nonlocal convection-dominated diffusion problem into a larger mixed problem so as to choose an enriched test space as a stabilization of the numerical algorithm. In the numerical experiments, we use an approximate optimal test norm which can be efficiently implemented in 1d, and study its performance against the energy norm on the test space. We conduct convergence studies for the nonlocal problem using uniform $h$- and $p$-refinements, and adaptive $h$-refinements on both smooth manufactured solutions and solutions with sharp gradient in a transition layer. In addition, we confirm that the PG method is asymptotically compatible.

In this paper we present an asymptotically compatible meshfree method for solving nonlocal equations with random coefficients, describing diffusion in heterogeneous media. In particular, the random diffusivity coefficient is described by a finite-dimensional random variable or a truncated combination of random variables with the Karhunen-Lo\`{e}ve decomposition, then a probabilistic collocation method (PCM) with sparse grids is employed to sample the stochastic process. On each sample, the deterministic nonlocal diffusion problem is discretized with an optimization-based meshfree quadrature rule. We present rigorous analysis for the proposed scheme and demonstrate convergence for a number of benchmark problems, showing that it sustains the asymptotic compatibility spatially and achieves an algebraic or sub-exponential convergence rate in the random coefficients space as the number of collocation points grows. Finally, to validate the applicability of this approach we consider a randomly heterogeneous nonlocal problem with a given spatial correlation structure, demonstrating that the proposed PCM approach achieves substantial speed-up compared to conventional Monte Carlo simulations.

For a given Lipschitz domain $\Omega$, it is a classical result that the trace space of $W^{1,p}(\Omega)$ is $W^{1-1/p,p}(\partial\Omega)$, namely any $W^{1,p}(\Omega)$ function has a well-defined $W^{1-1/p,p}(\partial\Omega)$ trace on its codimension-1 boundary $\partial\Omega$ and any $W^{1-1/p,p}(\partial\Omega)$ function on $\partial\Omega$ can be extended to a $W^{1,p}(\Omega)$ function. Recently, Dyda and Kassmann (2019) characterize the trace space for nonlocal Dirichlet problems involving integrodifferential operators with infinite interaction ranges, where the boundary datum is provided on the whole complement of the given domain $\mathbb{R}^d\backslash\Omega$. In this work, we study function spaces for nonlocal Dirichlet problems with a finite range of nonlocal interactions, which naturally serves a bridging role between the classical local PDE problem and the nonlocal problem with infinite interaction ranges. For these nonlocal Dirichlet problems, the boundary conditions are normally imposed on a region with finite thickness volume which lies outside of the domain. We introduce a function space on the volumetric boundary region that serves as a trace space for these nonlocal problems and study the related extension results. Moreover, we discuss the consistency of the new nonlocal trace space with the classical $W^{1-1/p,p}(\partial\Omega)$ space as the size of nonlocal interaction tends to zero. In making this connection, we conduct an investigation on the relations between nonlocal interactions on a larger domain and the induced interactions on its subdomain. The various forms of trace, embedding and extension theorems may then be viewed as consequences in different scaling limits.

In this work, we prove some trace theorems for function spaces with a nonlocal character that contain the classical $W^{s,p}$ space as a subspace. The result we obtain generalizes well known trace theorems for $W^{s,p}(\Omega)$ functions which has a well-defined $W^{1-s/p, p}$ trace on the boundary of a domain with sufficient regularity. The new generalized spaces are associated with norms that are characterized by nonlocal interaction kernels defined heterogeneously with a special localization feature on the boundary. Intuitively speaking, the class contains functions that are as rough as an $L^p$ function inside the domain of definition but as smooth as a $W^{s,p}$ function near the boundary. Our result is that the $W^{1-s/p, p}$ norm of the trace on the boundary such functions is controlled by the nonlocal norms that are weaker than the classical $W^{s, p}$ norm. These results are improvement and refinement of the classical results since the boundary trace can be attained without imposing regularity of the function in the interior of the domain. They also extend earlier results in the case of $p=2$. In the meantime, we prove Hardy-type inequalities for functions in the new generalized spaces that vanish on the boundary, showing them having the same decay rate to the boundary as functions in the smaller space $W^{s,p}(\Omega)$. A Poincar\'e-type inequality is also derived. An application of the new theory leads to the well-posedness of a nonlinear variational problem that allows possible singular behavior in the interior with imposed smoother data on the boundary.

Partial differential equations (PDEs) are used, with huge success, to model phenomena arising across all scientific and engineering disciplines. However, across an equally wide swath, there exist situations in which PDE models fail to adequately model observed phenomena or are not the best available model for that purpose. On the other hand, in many situations, nonlocal models that account for interaction occurring at a distance have been shown to more faithfully and effectively model observed phenomena that involve possible singularities and other anomalies. In this article, we consider a generic nonlocal model, beginning with a short review of its definition, the properties of its solution, its mathematical analysis, and specific concrete examples. We then provide extensive discussions about numerical methods, including finite element, finite difference, and spectral methods, for determining approximate solutions of the nonlocal models considered. In that discussion, we pay particular attention to a special class of nonlocal models that are the most widely studied in the literature, namely those involving fractional derivatives. In this work, we study the reproducing kernel (RK) collocation method for the peridynamic Navier equation. We first apply a linear RK approximation on both displacements and dilatation, then back-substitute dilatation, and solve the peridynamic Navier equation in a pure displacement form. The RK collocation scheme converges to the nonlocal limit and also to the local limit as nonlocal interactions vanish. The stability is shown by comparing the collocation scheme with the standard Galerkin scheme using Fourier analysis. We then apply the RK collocation to the quasi-discrete peridynamic Navier equation and show its convergence to the correct local limit when the ratio between the nonlocal length scale and the discretization parameter is fixed. The analysis is carried out on a special family of rectilinear Cartesian grids for the RK collocation method with a designated kernel with finite support. We assume the Lam\'{e} parameters satisfy $\lambda \geq \mu$ to avoid adding extra constraints on the nonlocal kernel. Finally, numerical experiments are conducted to validate the theoretical results.

Local-to-Nonlocal (LtN) coupling refers to a class of methods aimed at combining nonlocal and local modeling descriptions of a given system into a unified coupled representation. This allows to consolidate the accuracy of nonlocal models with the computational expediency of their local counterparts, while often simultaneously removing additional nonlocal modeling issues such as surface effects. The number and variety of proposed LtN coupling approaches have significantly grown in recent year, yet the field of LtN coupling continues to grow and still has open challenges. This review provides an overview of the state-of-the-art of LtN coupling in the context of nonlocal diffusion and nonlocal mechanics, specifically peridynamics. We present a classification of LtN coupling methods and discuss common features and challenges. The goal of this review is not to provide a preferred way to address LtN coupling but to present a broad perspective of the field, which would serve as guidance for practitioners in the selection of appropriate LtN coupling methods based on the characteristics and needs of the problem under consideration.

In this work, we review the connection between the subjects of homogenization and nonlocal modeling and discuss the relevant computational issues. By further exploring this connection, we hope to promote the cross fertilization of ideas from the different research fronts. We illustrate how homogenization may help characterizing the nature and the form of nonlocal interactions hypothesized in nonlocal models. We also offer some perspective on how studies of nonlocality may help the development of more effective numerical methods for homogenization.

Reproducing kernel (RK) approximations are meshfree methods that construct shape functions from sets of scattered data. We present an asymptotically compatible (AC) RK collocation method for nonlocal diffusion models with Dirichlet boundary condition. The scheme is shown to be convergent to both nonlocal diffusion and its corresponding local limit as nonlocal interaction vanishes. The analysis is carried out on a special family of rectilinear Cartesian grids for linear RK method with designed kernel support. The key idea for the stability of the RK collocation scheme is to compare the collocation scheme with the standard Galerkin scheme which is stable. In addition, there is a large computational cost for assembling the stiffness matrix of the nonlocal problem because high order Gaussian quadrature is usually needed to evaluate the integral. We thus provide a remedy to the problem by introducing a quasi-discrete nonlocal diffusion operator for which no numerical quadrature is further needed after applying the RK collocation scheme. The quasi-discrete nonlocal diffusion operator combined with RK collocation is shown to be convergent to the correct local diffusion problem by taking the limits of nonlocal interaction and spatial resolution simultaneously. The theoretical results are then validated with numerical experiments. We additionally illustrate a connection between the proposed technique and an existing optimization based approach based on generalized moving least squares (GMLS).

Nonlocal models provide exceptional simulation fidelity for a broad spectrum of scientific and engineering applications. However, wider deployment of nonlocal models is hindered by several modeling and numerical challenges. Among those, we focus on the nontrivial prescription of nonlocal boundary conditions, or volume constraints, that must be provided on a layer surrounding the domain where the nonlocal equations are posed. The challenge arises from the fact that, in general, data are provided on surfaces (as opposed to volumes) in the form of force or pressure data. In this paper we introduce an efficient, flexible and physically consistent technique for an automatic conversion of surface (local) data into volumetric data that does not have any constraints on the geometry of the domain and on the regularity of the nonlocal solution and that is not tied to any discretization. We show that our formulation is well-posed and that the limit of the nonlocal solution, as the nonlocality vanishes, is the local solution corresponding to the available surface data. Quadratic convergence rates are proved for the strong energy and L-2 convergence. We illustrate the theory with one dimensional numerical tests whose results provide the ground work for realistic simulations., Comment: 16 pages, 4 figures

Developments of nonlocal operators for modeling processes that traditionally have been described by local differential operators have been increasingly active during the last few years. One example is peridynamics for brittle materials and another is nonstandard diffusion including the use of fractional derivatives. A major obstacle for application of these methods is the high computational cost from the numerical implementation of the nonlocal operators. It is natural to consider fast methods of fast multipole or hierarchical matrix type to overcome this challenge. Unfortunately the relevant kernels do not satisfy the standard necessary conditions. In this work a new class of fast algorithms is developed and analyzed, which is some cases reduces the computational complexity of applying nonlocal operators to essentially the same order of magnitude as the complexity of standard local numerical methods.

Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) is a popular numerical technique developed for simulating complex fluid flows. Among its key ingredients is the use of nonlocal integral relaxations to local differentiations. Mathematical analysis of the corresponding nonlocal models on the continuum level can provide further theoretical understanding of SPH. We present, in this part of a series of works on the mathematics of SPH, a nonlocal relaxation to the conventional linear steady state Stokes system for incompressible viscous flows. The nonlocal continuum model is characterized by a smoothing length $\delta$ which measures the range of nonlocal interactions. It serves as a bridge between the discrete approximation schemes that involve a nonlocal integral relaxation and the local continuum models. We show that for a class of carefully chosen nonlocal operators, the resulting nonlocal Stokes equation is well-posed and recovers the original Stokes equation in the local limit when $\delta$ approaches zero. Motivated by some variational problems from a nonlocal model of mechanics, this work presents a set of sufficient conditions that guarantee a compact inclusion in the function space of $L^{p}$ vector fields defined on a domain $\Omega$ that is either a bounded domain in $\mathbb{R}^{d}$ or $\mathbb{R}^{d}$ itself. The criteria are nonlocal and are given with respect to nonlocal interaction kernels that may not be necessarily radially symmetric. Moreover, these criteria for vector fields are also different from those given for scalar fields in that the conditions are based on nonlocal interactions involving only parts of the components of the vector fields. Nonlocal gradient operators are basic elements of nonlocal vector calculus that play important roles in nonlocal modeling and analysis. In this work, we extend earlier analysis on nonlocal gradient operators. In particular, we study a nonlocal Dirichlet integral that is given by a quadratic energy functional based on nonlocal gradients. Our main finding, which differs from claims made in previous studies, is that the coercivity and stability of this nonlocal continuum energy functional may hold for some properly chosen nonlocal interaction kernels but may fail for some other ones. This can be significant for possible applications of nonlocal gradient operators in various nonlocal models. In particular, we discuss some important implications for the peridynamic correspondence material models.

In this paper, we extend the idea of "geometric reconstruction" to couple a nonlocal diffusion model directly with the classical local diffusion in one dimensional space. This new coupling framework removes interfacial inconsistency, ensures the flux balance, and satisfies energy conservation as well as the maximum principle, whereas none of existing coupling methods for nonlocal-to-local coupling satisfies all of these properties. We establish the well-posedness and provide the stability analysis of the coupling method. We investigate the difference to the local limiting problem in terms of the nonlocal interaction range. Furthermore, we propose a first order finite difference numerical discretization and perform several numerical tests to confirm the theoretical findings. In particular, we show that the resulting numerical result is free of artifacts near the boundary of the domain where a classical local boundary condition is used, together with a coupled fully nonlocal model in the interior of the domain.
