4. Manipulating Transfer Learning for Property Inference

Abstract

Transfer learning is a popular method for tuning pretrained (upstream) models for different downstream tasks using limited data and computational resources. We study how an adversary with control over an upstream model used in transfer learning can conduct property inference attacks on a victim's tuned downstream model. For example, to infer the presence of images of a specific individual in the downstream training set. We demonstrate attacks in which an adversary can manipulate the upstream model to conduct highly effective and specific property inference attacks (AUC score $> 0.9$), without incurring significant performance loss on the main task. The main idea of the manipulation is to make the upstream model generate activations (intermediate features) with different distributions for samples with and without a target property, thus enabling the adversary to distinguish easily between downstream models trained with and without training examples that have the target property. 11. Stealthy Backdoors as Compression Artifacts

Abstract

In a backdoor attack on a machine learning model, an adversary produces a model that performs well on normal inputs but outputs targeted misclassifications on inputs containing a small trigger pattern. Model compression is a widely-used approach for reducing the size of deep learning models without much accuracy loss, enabling resource-hungry models to be compressed for use on resource-constrained devices. In this paper, we study the risk that model compression could provide an opportunity for adversaries to inject stealthy backdoors. We design stealthy backdoor attacks such that the full-sized model released by adversaries appears to be free from backdoors (even when tested using state-of-the-art techniques), but when the model is compressed it exhibits highly effective backdoors. We show this can be done for two common model compression techniques -- model pruning and model quantization. Our findings demonstrate how an adversary may be able to hide a backdoor as a compression artifact, and show the importance of performing security tests on the models that will actually be deployed not their precompressed version., Comment: 20 pages, 9 figures, 14 tables

We obtain a characterization of bijective maps preserving the trace of products on the set of tensor products of rank‐1 idempotents, which may be considered as a generalization of Molnár's Wigner‐type theorem in multipartite systems. Abstract

Background: Low‐grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasms (LAMN) are very rare, accounting for approximately 0.2%–0.5% of gastrointestinal tumors. We conducted a multicenter retrospective study to explore the impact of different surgical procedures combined with HIPEC on the short‐term outcomes and long‐term survival of patients. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed the clinicopathological data of 91 LAMN perforation patients from 9 teaching hospitals over a 10‐year period, and divided them into HIPEC group and non‐HIPEC group based on whether or not underwent HIPEC. Results: Of the 91 patients with LAMN, 52 were in the HIPEC group and 39 in the non‐HIPEC group. The Kaplan‐Meier method predicted that 52 patients in the HIPEC group had 5‐ and 10‐year overall survival rates of 82.7% and 76.9%, respectively, compared with predicted survival rates of 51.3% and 46.2% for the 39 patients in the non‐HIPEC group, with a statistically significant difference between the two groups (χ2 = 10.622, p = 0.001; χ2 = 10.995, p = 0.001). Compared to the 5‐year and 10‐year relapse‐free survival rates of 75.0% and 65.4% in the HIPEC group, respectively, the 5‐year and 10‐year relapse‐free survival rates of 48.7% and 46.2% in the non‐HIPEC group were significant different between the two outcomes (χ2 = 8.063, p = 0.005; χ2 = 6.775, p = 0.009). The incidence of postoperative electrolyte disturbances and hypoalbuminemia was significantly higher in the HIPEC group than in the non‐HIPEC group (p = 0.023; p = 0.044). Conclusions: This study shows that surgery combined with HIPEC can significantly improve 5‐year and 10‐year overall survival rates and relapse‐free survival rates of LAMN perforation patients, without affecting their short‐term clinical outcomes. Abstract

IntroductionPancreatic neuroendocrine neoplasms (PNENs) are rare pancreatic tumors originating from pancreatic neuroendocrine cells. There is no consensus on the treatment for PNENs with unresectable liver metastases. Transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE) is the preferred treatment for unresectable primary liver cancer. But the efficacy of TACE and anticoagulation in PNENs with unresectable liver metastases and portal vein thrombosis has never been reported.Methods and ResultsWe present the case of a 50-year-old male patient with hepatitis C who was found to have a single liver mass during a regular physical examination in 2016. The liver mass was surgically removed. Postoperative pathology suggested a neuroendocrine tumor of the liver, and it was suggested to look for the primary tumor. The patient was followed up until 2020, and the primary pancreatic tumor was found, along with multiple liver metastases and portal vein thrombosis. After transcatheter arterial embolization, anticoagulation, and endocrine therapy, the patient’s tumor load was relieved, and the portal vein was recanalized.ConclusionThe article reports the disease course in a case of a functional pancreatic neuroendocrine tumor with liver metastasis and portal vein thrombosis and reviews previous literature. To our knowledge, we reported for the first time the efficacy of TACE and anticoagulation in PNENs with unresectable liver metastases and portal vein thrombosis.
