Abstract Background A significant percentage of patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) without standard modifiable cardiovascular risk factors (SMuRFs) are being identified. Nonetheless, the prognostic influence of the TyG index on adverse events in this type of patient remains unexplored. The aim of this study was to assess the prognostic value of the TyG index among ACS patients without SMuRFs for predicting adverse outcomes. Methods This study involved 1140 consecutive patients who were diagnosed with ACS without SMuRFs at Beijing Anzhen Hospital between May 2018 and December 2020 and underwent coronary angiography. Each patient was followed up for a period of 35 to 66 months after discharge. The objective of this study was to examine major adverse cardiac and cerebrovascular events (MACCE), which included all-cause mortality, non-fatal myocardial infarction, non-fatal ischemic stroke, as well as ischemia-driven revascularization. Results During the median follow-up period of 48.3 months, 220 (19.3%) MACCE events occurred. The average age of the participants was 59.55 ± 10.98 years, and the average TyG index was 8.67 ± 0.53. In the fully adjusted model, when considering the TyG index as either a continuous/categorical variable, significant associations with adverse outcomes were observed. Abstract Background Sodium–Glucose Cotransporter-2 Inhibitor (SGLT2i) is a novel oral drug for treating type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) with demonstrated cardiovascular benefits. Previous studies in apolipoprotein E knockout mice have shown that SGLT2i is associated with attenuated progression of atherosclerosis. However, whether this effect extends to T2DM patients with coronary atherosclerosis in real-world settings remains unknown. Methods In this longitudinal cohort study using coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA), T2DM patients who underwent ≥ 2 CCTA examinations at our center between 2019 and 2022 were screened. Eligible patients had multiple study plaques, defined as non-obstructive stenosis at baseline and not intervened during serial CCTAs. Exclusion criteria included a CCTA time interval 0.05). Conclusions In this longitudinal CCTA cohort of T2DM patients, SGLT2i therapy markedly regressed coronary overall PV and PAV, mainly result from a significant reduction in non-calcified plaque. Abstract Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocols have substantially proven their merit in diminishing recuperation durations and mitigating postoperative adverse events in geriatric populations undergoing colorectal cancer procedures. Despite this, the pivotal aspect of postoperative pain control has not garnered the commensurate attention it deserves. Typically, employing a multimodal analgesia regimen that weaves together nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, opioids, local anesthetics, and nerve blocks stands paramount in curtailing surgical complications and facilitating reduced convalescence within hospital confines. Nevertheless, this integrative pain strategy is not devoid of pitfalls; the specter of organ dysfunction looms over the geriatric cohort, rooted in the abuse of analgesics or the complex interplay of polypharmacy. Revolutionary research is delving into alternative delivery and release modalities, seeking to allay the inadvertent consequences of analgesia and thereby potentially elevating postoperative outcomes for the elderly post-colorectal cancer surgery populace. This review examines the dual aspects of multimodal analgesia regimens by comparing their established benefits with potential limitations and offers insight into the evolving strategies of drug administration and release.

The amorphous Al–O coating with a thickness of approximately 6 μm was prepared on 316 L stainless steel using multi-arc ion plating technology to investigate the corrosion resistance of the coating in static lead–bismuth eutectic at 550 °C. The corrosion time ranged from 100 to 1000 h. The samples were characterized using different instruments, and the results showed that the Al–O coating had poor wettability and could effectively protect the substrate material from lead–bismuth corrosion in a static lead–bismuth eutectic. However, during the long-term high-temperature corrosion process, the coating changes from an amorphous phase to a polycrystalline doped structure, resulting in pores on the coating. Further, elemental interdiffusion was identified between the substrate and coating, indicating risk of coating failure.

Abstract Pain is a common symptom of many diseases with a high incidence rate. Clinically, drug treatment, as the main method to relieve pain at present, is often accompanied by different degrees of adverse reactions. Therefore, it is urgent to gain a profound understanding of the pain mechanisms in order to develop advantageous analgesic targets. The PD-L1/PD-1 pathway, an important inhibitory molecule in the immune system, has taken part in regulating neuroinflammation and immune response. Accumulating evidence indicates that the PD-L1/PD-1 pathway is aberrantly activated in various pain models. And blocking PD-L1/PD-1 pathway will aggravate pain behaviors. This review aims to summarize the emerging evidence on the role of the PD-L1/PD-1 pathway in alleviating pain and provide an overview of the mechanisms involved in pain resolution, including the regulation of macrophages, microglia, T cells, as well as nociceptor neurons. However, its underlying mechanism still needs to be further elucidated in the future. In conclusion, despite more deep researches are needed, these pioneering studies indicate that PD-L1/PD-1 may be a potential neuroimmune target for pain relief.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a prevalent and aggressive malignancy characterized by a complex tumor microenvironment (TME). Given the variations in the level of adipocyte infiltration in TME, the prognosis may differ among CRC patients. Thus, there is an urgent need to establish a reliable method for identifying adipocyte subtypes in CRC in order to elucidate the impact of adipocyte infiltration on CRC treatment and prognosis. Herein, 144 adipocyte-infiltration-related genes (AIRGs) were identified as predictive markers for the immune-associated features and prognosis of CRC patients. Based on the 144 genes, the unsupervised clustering algorithm identified two distinct clusters of CRC patients with variations in molecular and signaling pathways, clinicopathological characteristics and responses to CRC chemotherapy and immunotherapy. Furthermore, an AIRG prognostic signature was constructed and validated in independent datasets. Overall, this study developed a prognostic signature based on AIRGs in CRC, which may contribute to the development of personalized treatment strategies and enhance prognostic prediction for CRC patients.

The cable-stiffened single-layer latticed shell is an innovative structural design that achieves a perfect balance between lightweight and stability by combining cables and a latticed shell. However, the study on dynamic response and failure mechanism of cable-stiffened single-layer latticed shell under seismic action is still lacking. Therefore, small-scale shaking table tests of two kinds of single-layer spherical latticed shells are carried out; the dynamic response and failure mode of the two shells under sine wave earthquake are investigated by using time history analysis. The conclusions show that the introduction of the prestressed cable plays an important role in improving the seismic performance of the single-layer latticed shell, and the cable-stiffened single-layer latticed shell has better load capacity and seismic performance under earthquake action than the ordinary single-layer latticed shell structure.

In this study, two different CrN coatings were deposited on the surface of Zr-4 via a multi-arc ion-plating method using gradient and non-gradient deposition processes. The effects of two deposition processes on the high-temperature oxidation resistance and internal stress of the coatings were investigated. The microstructure and phase structure of the coatings were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and energy dispersive spectrometry. The high-temperature oxidation resistance of the specimens was investigated by performing thermal shock experiments and simulated loss-of-coolant accident high-temperature steam oxidation experiments. The residual stresses of both coatings during deposition were determined by XRD analysis. In addition, the thermal stresses of both coatings during the high-temperature oxidation tests were modeled and calculated. Under long-term high-temperature oxidation conditions, the gradient-deposited CrN coating exhibited improved high-temperature oxidation resistance performance than that exhibited by non-gradient-deposited CrN coating. In addition, the residual stresses of gradient-deposited CrN coating during deposition and thermal stresses during high-temperature oxidation were significantly lower than those of the non-gradient-deposited CrN coating. The results obtained herein confirm the promising potential of gradient-deposited CrN coating as an accident-tolerant fuel cladding material.

Origami have been focused on by the researchers for its foldability and deployability owing to the huge potential in architectural engineering. However, origami was rarely used in practical construction projects as structures due to the lack of systematic investigation of motion control with respect to thickness and gravity. To clarify the lifting process of the origami structure, a preliminary folding test is carried out with a small-scaled single-DOF physical origami model. Folding paths are obtained by the non-contact measurement system and the force-displacement measurement system. The experimental results are confirmed by the numerical simulation of thick origami. The invariant relationship is observed between the folding process and the driving force. Furthermore, the final configuration of the model is found to be strongly related to the location of the suspension points. The methods to realize the complete folding are suggested. Moreover, the multi-unit model is simulated aiming for the application of rapid foldable structures.

Background: Postoperative pulmonary complications (PPCs) are known to adversely affect surgical outcomes and patient prognoses, yet no published study provides a qualitative and quantitative analysis of the latest trends and developments in the field of PPCs. Therefore, we conducted a bibliometric analysis of 20 years of publications related to PPCs. Methods: We examined publications on PPCs published between 2003 and 2022 in the Web of Science Core Collection database to assess trends in the field in four dimensions: trends in publications, major research power, keywords, and co-cited publications. Results: A total of 1881 articles were analyzed using CiteSpace and VOSviewer. Overall, the number of publications on PPCs has increased in the last two decades, with 42.72% of the publications being produced in the last five years. The United States of America had the highest number of articles, accounting for 21.91% of the total. The institution with the highest number of publications was the University of Genoa, which published 54 articles and showed a general lack of inter-institutional collaboration. The most productive author was Paolo Pelosi, with no core group of authors identified in the field of PPCs. The keyword co-occurrence analysis indicated that the focus of research has shifted over the past 20 years in terms of risk factors, type of surgery, and so on, while “enhanced recovery”, “prehabilitation”, “driving pressure” and “sugammadex” have received the most recent attention. In the analysis of co-cited literature, the most recent clusters that received attention were driving pressure, lung cancer patient, enhanced recovery, and neuromuscular blockade. Conclusion: This bibliometric study suggests that pulmonary protective ventilation strategies, neuromuscular blockade reversal, and pulmonary prehabilitation strategy will be the focus of attention in the coming period. More large-scale studies and strengthened institutional collaboration are necessary to generate robust evidence for guiding individualized prevention of PPCs.

Background Despite recent advances in immunotherapy, many patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) do not respond to immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI). Resistance to ICI may be driven by suboptimal priming of antitumor T lymphocytes due to poor antigen presentation as well as their exclusion and impairment by the immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment (TME). In a recent phase I trial in patients with NSCLC, in situ vaccination (ISV) with dendritic cells engineered to secrete CCL21 (CCL21-DC), a chemokine that facilitates the recruitment of T cells and DC, promoted T lymphocyte tumor infiltration and PD-L1 upregulation.Methods Murine models of NSCLC with distinct driver mutations (KrasG12D/P53+/-/Lkb1-/- (KPL); KrasG12D/P53+/- (KP); and KrasG12D (K)) and varying tumor mutational burden were used to evaluate the efficacy of combination therapy with CCL21-DC ISV plus ICI. Comprehensive analyses of longitudinal preclinical samples by flow cytometry, single cell RNA-sequencing (scRNA-seq) and whole-exome sequencing were performed to assess mechanisms of combination therapy.Results ISV with CCL21-DC sensitized immune-resistant murine NSCLCs to ICI and led to the establishment of tumor-specific immune memory. Immunophenotyping revealed that CCL21-DC obliterated tumor-promoting neutrophils, promoted sustained infiltration of CD8 cytolytic and CD4 Th1 lymphocytes and enriched progenitor T cells in the TME. Addition of ICI to CCL21-DC further enhanced the expansion and effector function of T cells both locally and systemically. Longitudinal evaluation of tumor mutation profiles revealed that CCL21-DC plus ICI induced immunoediting of tumor subclones, consistent with the broadening of tumor-specific T cell responses.Conclusions CCL21-DC ISV synergizes with anti-PD-1 to eradicate murine NSCLC. Our data support the clinical application of CCL21-DC ISV in combination with checkpoint inhibition for patients with NSCLC.

Abstract PBX1 is a transcription factor that regulates a variety of genes, involved in intracellular lipid metabolism, cell proliferation, and other pathways. The promoting and inhibiting function of PBX1 in various cancer types was extensively discussed, however, there have been no studies on PBX1 proteins in colorectal cancer (CRC). This study aimed to reveal the anti-tumor function of PBX1 in CRC and the underlying molecular mechanism. Bioinformatics analysis revealed that PBX1 is downregulated in CRC, indicating that is a potential antioncogene in CRC. Overexpression of PBX1 suppresses tumor growth and metastasis in vitro and in vivo. Mechanistically, we found that PBX1 acted as a transcription factor that suppressed DCDC2 expression and inhibited spindle function. Moreover, the PBX1-DCDC2 axis controlled the Wnt pathway in CRC cells. Overexpression of DCDC2 restored CRC proliferation, metastasis abilities and Wnt pathway. In conclusion, this study suggests that PBX1 acts as a transcription factor to suppress DCDC2 expression and inhibit cell proliferation and metastasis by disrupting spindle function and the Wnt pathway in CRC.

Activated carbon fibers (ACFs) derived from various polymeric fibers with the characteristics of a high specific surface area, developed pore structure, and good flexibility are promising for the new generation of chemical protection clothing. In this paper, a polyacrylonitrile-based ACF felt was prepared via the process of liquid phase pre-oxidation, along with a one-step carbonization and chemical activation method. The obtained ACF felt exhibited a large specific surface area of 2219.48 m2/g and pore volume of 1.168 cm3/g, as well as abundant polar groups on the surface. Owing to the developed pore structure and elaborated surface chemical property, the ACF felt possessed an intriguing adsorption performance for a chemical warfare agent simulant dipropyl sulfide (DPS), with the highest adsorption capacity being 202.38 mg/g. The effects of the initial concentration of DPS and temperature on the adsorption performance of ACF felt were investigated. Meanwhile, a plausible adsorption mechanism was proposed based on the kinetic analysis and fitting of different adsorption isotherm models. The results demonstrated that the adsorption process of DPS onto ACF felt could be well fitted with a pseudo-second-order equation, indicating a synergistic effect of chemical adsorption and physical adsorption. We anticipate that this work could be helpful to the design and development of advanced ACF felts for the application of breathable chemical protection clothing.

Pain imposes a significant urden on patients, affecting them physically, psychologically, and economically. Despite numerous studies on the pathogenesis of pain, its clinical management remains suboptimal, leading to the under-treatment of many pain patients. Recently, research on the role of macrophages in pain processes has been increasing, offering potential for novel therapeutic approaches. Macrophages, being indispensable immune cells in the innate immune system, exhibit remarkable diversity and plasticity. However, the majority of research has primarily focused on the contributions of M1 macrophages in promoting pain. During the late stage of tissue damage or inflammatory invasion, M1 macrophages typically transition into M2 macrophages. In recent years, growing evidence has highlighted the role of M2 macrophages in pain relief. In this review, we summarize the mechanisms involved in M2 macrophage polarization and discuss their emerging roles in pain relief. Notably, M2 macrophages appear to be key players in multiple endogenous pathways that promote pain relief. We further analyze potential pathways through which M2 macrophages may alleviate pain.

Abstract Background Humane treatment requires the provision of appropriate sedation and analgesia during medical diagnosis and treatment. However, limited information is available about the status of procedural analgesic interventions in Chinese hospitals. Therefore, a nationwide survey was established to identify challenges and propose potential improvement strategies. Methods Forty-three members of the Pain Group of Chinese Society of Anesthesiology established and reviewed the questionnaire, which included (1) general information on the hospitals, (2) the sedation/analgesia rate in gastrointestinal endoscopy, labor, flexible bronchoscopy, hysteroscopy in China, (3) staff assignments, (4) drug use for procedural analgesic interventions, and (5) difficulties in procedural analgesic interventions. The data were obtained using an online questionnaire sent to the chief anesthesiologists of Chinese hospitals above Grade II or members of the Pain Group of Chinese Society of Anesthesiology. Results Valid and complete questionnaires were received from 2198 (44.0%) hospitals, of which 64.5% were Grade III. The overall sedation/analgesia rates were as follows: gastroscopy (50.6%), colonoscopy (53.7%), ERCP (65.9%), induced abortion (67.5%), labor (42.3%), hysteroscopy (67.0%) and fiber bronchoscopy (52.6%). Compared with Grade II hospitals, Grade III hospitals had a higher proportion of procedural analgesic interventions services except for induced abortion. Abstract The stiffness of a plant cell in response to an applied force is determined not only by the elasticity of the cell wall but also by turgor pressure and cell geometry, which affect the tension of the cell wall. Although stiffness has been investigated using atomic force microscopy (AFM) and Young’s modulus of the cell wall has occasionally been estimated using the contact-stress theory (Hertz theory), the existence of tension has made the study of stiffness more complex. Elastic shell theory has been proposed as an alternative method; however, the estimation of elasticity remains ambiguous. Here, we used finite element method simulations to verify the formula of the elastic shell theory for onion (Allium cepa) cells. We applied the formula and simulations to successfully quantify the turgor pressure and elasticity of a cell in the plane direction using the cell curvature and apparent stiffness measured by AFM. We conclude that tension resulting from turgor pressure regulates cell stiffness, which can be modified by a slight adjustment of turgor pressure in the order of 0.1 MPa. This theoretical analysis reveals a path for understanding forces inherent in plant cells.

Abstract This cross-sectional study aimed to explore the combined effects of depression and obesity on ischemic heart disease and its subtypes. Data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2007–2018 were used. A total of 29,050 participants aged 20 years or older were included in the analyses. Logistic regression models and restricted cubic spline models were applied to evaluate the associations between depression symptom and ischemic heart disease. There were significant correlations between depressive symptoms and ischemic heart disease [OR and 95% CI 2.44 (1.91, 3.10)] and its subtypes: coronary heart disease [2.32 (1.67, 3.23)], heart attack [2.18 (1.71, 2.78)], and angina [2.72 (1.96, 3.79)].The synergistic effects of depression with obesity (BMI ≥ 30) and central obesity (waist ≥ 102/88 cm for men/women) on ischemic heart disease were estimated and expressed using the relative excess risk due to interaction (RERI) and the attributable proportion due to interaction (AP). The RERI and AP with 95% CIs of depression and central obesity for ischemic heart disease were 1.10 (0.01, 2.19) and 0.35 (0.06, 0.64). When we analysed the other three subtypes of ischemic heart disease, we only found depressive symptoms and central obesity could have a meaningful synergistic effect on heart attack (RERI: 0.84 (− 0.28, 1.96) AP: (0.31 (0.00, 0.69)).

BackgroundThe utilization of Propofol, a widely used intravenous sedative or anesthetic, is characterized by its quick onset, predictable control, and fleeting half-life during both general anesthesia and intensive care unit sedation. Recent evidence, however, has highlighted propofol’s propensity to induce euphoria, particularly in patients undergoing painless procedures such as gastrointestinal or gastric endoscopy. Given its widespread use in patients undergoing such procedures, this study aims to investigate the clinical evidence and factors that may influence propofol-induced euphoria in these settings.MethodsThe Addiction Research Center Inventory-Chinese Version (ARCI-CV) scale was administered to 360 patients undergoing gastric or gastrointestinal endoscopy using propofol as a sedative. Patient characteristics including past medical history, depression, anxiety, alcohol abuse, and sleep disturbance were recorded through history taking and assessment using various questionnaires prior to the examination. The euphoric and sedative statuses were assessed at 30 min and 1 week post-examination.ResultsThe experimental results of a survey of 360 patients who underwent gastric or gastrointestinal endoscopy using propofol showed that the mean Morphine–Benzedrine Group (MBG) score before the procedure and after 30 min of the procedure was 4.23 and 8.67, respectively. The mean Pentobarbital–Chlorpromazine–Alcohol Group (PCAG) score before the procedure and after 30 min of the procedure was 3.24 and 6.22, respectively. These results showed that both MBG and PCAG scores increased significantly after the procedure. Certain factors, such as dreaming, propofol dose, duration of anesthesia, and etomidate dose, were all correlated with MBG both at 30 min and 1 week after the examination. In addition, etomidate had an effect of decreasing MBG scores and increasing PCAG scores both at 30 min and 1 week after the examination.ConclusionTaken together, propofol may elicit euphoria and potentially contribute to propofol addiction. There are several risk factors for the development of propofol addiction, including dreaming, propofol dose, duration of anesthesia, and etomidate dose. These findings suggest that propofol may have a euphoric effect and may have the potential for drug addiction and abuse.

Abstract Satellite‐based post‐tornado assessments have been widely used for the detection of tornado tracks, which heavily relies on the identification of vegetation changes through observations at visible and near‐infrared channels. During the deadly 10–11 December 2021 tornado outbreak, a series of violent tornadoes first touched down over northeastern Arkansas, an area dominated by cropland with rare vegetation coverage in winter. Through the examination of Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer multi‐spectral observations, this study reveals significant scars on shortwave infrared channels over this region, but none are captured by visible and near‐infrared channels. The dominant soil type is aquert (one of vertisols), whose high clay content well preserves the severe changes in soil structure during the tornado passage, when the topmost soil layer was removed and underlying soil with higher moisture content was exposed to the air. This study suggests a quick post‐tornado assessment method over less vegetated area by using shortwave infrared channels.

No-reference video quality assessment (NR-VQA) for user generated content (UGC) is crucial for understanding and improving visual experience. Unlike video recognition tasks, VQA tasks are sensitive to changes in input resolution. Since large amounts of UGC videos nowadays are 720p or above, the fixed and relatively small input used in conventional NR-VQA methods results in missing high-frequency details for many videos. In this paper, we propose a novel Transformer-based NR-VQA framework that preserves the high-resolution quality information. With the multi-resolution input representation and a novel multi-resolution patch sampling mechanism, our method enables a comprehensive view of both the global video composition and local high-resolution details. The proposed approach can effectively aggregate quality information across different granularities in spatial and temporal dimensions, making the model robust to input resolution variations. Our method achieves state-of-the-art performance on large-scale UGC VQA datasets LSVQ and LSVQ-1080p, and on KoNViD-1k and LIVE-VQC without fine-tuning.

Studies on the neuroprotective effects of anesthetics were carried out more than half a century ago. Subsequently, many cell and animal experiments attempted to verify the findings. However, in clinical trials, the neuroprotective effects of anesthetics were not observed. These contradictory results suggest a mismatch between basic research and clinical trials. The Stroke Therapy Academic Industry Roundtable X (STAIR) proposed that the emergence of endovascular thrombectomy (EVT) would provide a proper platform to verify the neuroprotective effects of anesthetics because the haemodynamics of patients undergoing EVT is very close to the ischaemia–reperfusion model in basic research. With the widespread use of EVT, it is necessary for us to re-examine the neuroprotective effects of anesthetics to guide the use of anesthetics during EVT because the choice of anesthesia is still based on team experience without definite guidelines. In this paper, we describe the research status of anesthesia in EVT and summarize the neuroprotective mechanisms of some anesthetics. Then, we focus on the contradictory results between clinical trials and basic research and discuss the causes. Finally, we provide an outlook on the neuroprotective effects of anesthetics in the era of endovascular therapy.

Drosophila melanogaster has emerged as an ideal system for studying the networks that control tissue development and homeostasis and, given the similarity of the pathways involved, controlled and uncontrolled growth in mammalian systems. The signaling pathways used in patterning the Drosophila wing disc are well known and result in the emergence of interaction of these pathways with the Hippo signaling pathway, which plays a central role in controlling cell proliferation and apoptosis. Mechanical effects are another major factor in the control of growth, but far less is known about how they exert their control. Herein, we develop a mathematical model that integrates the mechanical interactions between cells, which occur via adherens and tight junctions, with the intracellular actin network and the Hippo pathway so as to better understand cell-autonomous and non-autonomous control of growth in response to mechanical forces.

Ensuring the safety of nuclear energy necessitates proactive measures to prevent the escalation of severe operational conditions. This article presents an efficient and interpretable framework for the swift identification of abnormal events in nuclear power plants (NPPs), equipping operators with timely insights for effective decision-making. A novel neural network architecture, combining Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) and attention mechanisms, is proposed to address the challenge of signal coupling. The derivative dynamic time warping (DDTW) method enhances interpretability by comparing time series operating parameters during abnormal and normal states. Experimental validation demonstrates high real-time accuracy, underscoring the broader applicability of the approach across NPPs.

The environmental and economic problems caused by gangue accumulation continue to worsen. Therefore, the implementation of a cost-effective method for utilizing gangue resources is urgent. In this study, different gangue powder (GP) contents (0%, 10%, 20%, 30%, 40%, and 50%) for mechanical–thermal activation were used to modify a fly ash-based geopolymer (FAG). Further, the effect of GP was revealed by investigating the setting time, fluidity, porosity, water absorption rate, mechanical properties, drying shrinkage, and microstructure. Results showed that the addition of GP reduced the fluidity and setting time of gangue powder—fly ash-base geopolymer (GPFAG), improved density, and decreased the water absorption rate of GPFAG. Moreover, its mechanical properties gradually improved. Compared with GPFAG0 (FAG with 0% GP), the 28-d compressive and flexural strengths of GPFAG50 (FAG with 50% GP) increased by 246.4% and 136.8%, respectively. The incorporation of GP increased the drying shrinkage. The results of XRD and FTIR analyses showed that the addition of GP increased the production of amorphous silica–aluminate gels, such as N-S-A-H and C-S-A-H. Moreover, strong Si-O-T vibrational peaks appeared in the range 743–1470 cm−1, characterizing the GPFAG strength and reaction degree.

Purpose: Etomidate is widely used in general anesthesia and sedation, and significant individual differences are observed during anesthesia induction. This study aimed to explore the molecular mechanisms of different etomidate susceptibility at the genetic level.Methods: 128 patients were enrolled in the study. The bispectral index (BIS), mean arterial pressure (MAP) and heart rate (HR) were recorded when the patients entered the operating room for 5 min, before the administration of etomidate, 30 s, 60 s, 90 s, 120 s and 150 s after the administration of etomidate, and the corresponding single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were analyzed.Results: Significant individual differences were observed in etomidate anesthesia. The results of two-way ANOVA showed that CYP2C9 rs1559, GABRB2 rs2561, GABRA2 rs279858, GABRA2 rs279863 were associated with the BIS value during etomidate anesthesia; UGT1A9 rs11692021 was associated with the Extended Observer’s Assessment of Alertness and Sedation (EOAA/S) score during etomidate anesthesia; GABRB2 rs2561 was associated with MAP. Multiple linear stepwise regression model results showed that CYP2C9 rs1559, GABRA2 rs279858 and GABRB2 rs2561 were associated with the BIS value and UGT1A9 rs11692021 was associated with the EOAA/S score; GABRB2 rs2561 was associated with MAP.Conclusion: GABRA2 rs279858, GABRB2 rs2561, CYP2C9 rs1559 and UGT1A9 rs11692021 are the SNPs with individual differences during etomidate anesthesia. This is the first to study the SNPs of etomidate, which can provide certain evidence for the future use of etomidate anesthesia and theoretical basis for precision anesthesia.

AimsTo construct an automatic method for individual parcellation of manganese-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MEMRI) of rat brain with high accuracy, which could preserve the inherent voxel intensity and Regions of interest (ROI) morphological characteristics simultaneously.Methods and resultsThe transformation relationship from standardized space to individual space was obtained by firstly normalizing individual image to the Paxinos space and then inversely transformed. On the other hand, all the regions defined in the atlas image were separated and resaved as binary mask images. Then, transforming the mask images into individual space via the inverse transformations and reslicing using the 4th B-spline interpolation algorithm. The boundary of these transformed regions was further refined by image erosion and expansion operator, and finally combined together to generate the individual parcellations. Moreover, two groups of MEMRI images were used for evaluation. We found that the individual parcellations were satisfied, and the inherent image intensity was preserved. The statistical significance of case-control comparisons was further optimized.ConclusionsWe have constructed a new automatic method for individual parcellation of rat brain MEMRI images, which could preserve the inherent voxel intensity and further be beneficial in case-control statistical analyses. This method could also be extended to other imaging modalities, even other experiments species. It would facilitate the accuracy and significance of ROI-based imaging analyses.

Several previous studies discussed the association between vitamin K (VK) status and cognition. But the association between dietary VK consumption and cognitive performance in the elderly was not well understood. Therefore, we investigated the correlation between dietary VK intake and the cognition of the elderly. Our research used the data of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 2011 to 2014. The dietary intake of VK was assessed by two 24-h dietary recalls. The cognitive function was measured in the survey of NHANES, including the Consortium to Establish a Registry for Alzheimer’s disease Word Learning subtest (CERAD W-L), Animal Fluency Test (AFT), and Digit Symbol Substitution Test (DSST). Logistic regression and restricted cubic spline models were applied to assess the relationship between dietary VK intake and cognition. Compared with the lowest dietary VK intake group, the multivariate-adjusted odds ratio (OR) [95% confidence interval (95% CI)] of low CERAD W-L score for the highest intake group was 0.39 (0.26–0.60), the multivariate-adjusted OR (95% CI) of low AFT score was 0.59 (0.38–0.92), and the multivariate-adjusted OR (95% CI) of low DSST score was 0.44 (0.29–0.65), respectively. There was an L-shaped dose–response relationship between dietary VK intake and low CERAD W-L score. There was a linear dose–response relationship between dietary VK intake and low AFT score, and there was also a linear dose–response relationship for the low DSST score. In addition, we also found a negative association between VK from vegetables and the risk of low CERAD W-L scores. Dietary VK intake and VK intake from vegetables were inversely related to the risk of low cognitive performance of the elderly.

Northwest China has a desert, arid and semi-arid climate that makes outdoor air sampling challenging. The region is also affected by intense dust storms. Monitoring challenges from the harsh climate have limited supplies of the data needed to inform appropriate regulatory actions to address air pollution in the region. Here we combine a comprehensive set of state-of-the-art offline analytical approaches and multiple models to deconstruct the chemical nature and sources of particulate matter at arid city in northwestern China. We collected 972 samples in Jiuquan during the period March 2019 through January 2020. The annual levels of PM10 (73.7 μg/m3) exceeded the Chinese Ambient Air Quality Standard (CAAQS) Grade II of 70 μg/m3. The percentages of the sum of sulfate, nitrate and ammonium, inorganic elements, organic carbon and elemental carbon in PM10 mass ranged 6.8–15.8%, 9.9–12.2%, 9.0–27.7%, and 1.5–4.7%, respectively. Analyses of sources indicated that soil dust was a major contributor to PM10 levels in Jiuquan city accounting for 24.8–30.5%. Fugitive dust and coal combustion were the second and third largest contributors to PM10, respectively. Our results suggest that natural emissions can make air quality regulation futile. In this comprehensive particulate pollution analysis, we present the view that the sizeable regional particulate sources warrant national and regional mitigation strategies to ensure compliance with air quality requirements.

Geosynchronous equatorial orbit (GEO) satellite-derived AOD possesses huge advantages for monitoring atmospheric aerosol with high frequency; however, the data missing existing in the satellite-derived AOD products dramatically limits this expected advantage due to cloud obscuration and aerosol retrieval algorithm. In recent years, numerous AOD fusion algorithms have been proposed, while these algorithms are mostly developed to blend daily AOD products derived from low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites and generally neglect discrepancies from different categories of products. Therefore, a spatiotemporal fusion framework based on the Bayesian maximum entropy theorem, blending GEO with LEO satellite observations and incorporating data discrepancies (GL-BME), is developed to complementarily recover the Advanced Himawari-8 Imager (AHI) AOD products over East Asia. The results show that GL-BME significantly improves the average spatial completeness of AOD from 20.3% to 67.6% with ensured reliability, and the accuracy of merged AODs nearly maintains that of original AHI AODs. Moreover, a comparison of the monthly aerosol spatial distribution between the merged and original AHI AODs is conducted to evaluate the performance and significance of GL-BME, which indicates that GL-BME could further restore the real atmospheric aerosol situation to a certain extent on the basis of dramatic spatial coverage improvement.

Folate may have beneficial effects on physical function through its antioxidant effect. Thus, we investigated the associations between serum folate and functional disability in older adults. Data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2011–2018 were used. Serum folate included 5-methyltetrahydrofolate and total folate. Five domains of functional disability, including lower extremity mobility (LEM), instrumental activities of daily living (IADL), activities of daily living (ADL), leisure and social activities (LSA), and general physical activities (GPA), were self-reported. Multivariable-adjusted logistic regression models and restricted cubic splines were employed. 5-Methyltetrahydrofolate was inversely associated with IADL and GPA disability, and the multivariate-adjusted ORs (95% CIs) in the highest versus lowest quartiles were 0.65 (0.46–0.91) and 0.70 (0.50–0.96), respectively. The total folate was also inversely associated with IADL (OR quartile 4vs1 = 0.65, 95% CI: 0.46–0.90) and GPA (OR quartile 3vs1 = 0.66, 95% CI: 0.44–0.99) disability. The dose–response relationships showed a gradual decrease in the risk of IADL and GPA disability as serum folate increased. In the sex, age, BMI, and alcohol consumption subgroup analyses, we saw that the associations were primarily found in females, under 80 years old, normal weight, and non-drinkers. Sensitivity analyses further confirmed the robustness of our results. Our results indicated that serum folate concentrations were negatively associated with IADL and GPA disability, especially in females. In other subgroup analyses, we discovered that these negative associations were primarily prevalent in participants under 80 years old, normal weight, and non-drinkers.

Predicting peptide inter-residue contact maps plays an important role in computational biology, which determines the topology of the peptide structure. However, due to the limited number of known homologous structures, there is still much room for inter-residue contact map prediction. Current models are not sufficient for capturing the high accuracy relationship between the residues, especially for those with a long-range distance. In this article, we developed a novel deep neural network framework to refine the rough contact map produced by the existing methods. The rough contact map is used to construct the residue graph that is processed by the graph convolutional neural network (GCN). GCN can better capture the global information and is therefore used to grasp the long-range contact relationship. The residual convolutional neural network is also applied in the framework for learning local information. We conducted the experiments on four different test datasets, and the inter-residue long-range contact map prediction accuracy demonstrates the effectiveness of our proposed method.

Excessive dietary salt intake induces neuroinflammation and oxidative stress in the brain, which lead to sympathetic excitation, contributing to hypertension. However, the underlying mechanisms remain elusive. Accumulating evidence reveals that trimethylamine-N-oxide (TMAO), a gut microbiota-derived metabolite, is implicated in the pathogenesis of multiple cardiovascular diseases. The present study sought to determine whether central TMAO is elevated and associated with neuroinflammation and oxidative stress in the brain after long-term high salt (HS) diet intake and, if so, whether inhibition of TMAO generation ameliorates HS-induced sympathetic excitation and hypertension. Sprague–Dawley rats were fed either a HS diet or a normal salt (NS) diet and simultaneously treated with vehicle (VEH) or 1.0% 3,3-Dimethyl-1-butanol (DMB, an inhibitor of trimethylamine formation) for 8 weeks. HS + VEH rats, compared with NS + VEH rats, had elevated TMAO in plasma and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), increased blood pressure (BP), and increased sympathetic drive as indicated by the BP response to ganglionic blockade and plasma norepinephrine levels. HS-induced these changes were attenuated by DMB, which significantly reduced TMAO in plasma and CSF. Neuroinflammation as assessed by proinflammatory cytokine expression and NF-κB activity and microglial activity, and oxidative stress as measured by NAD(P)H oxidase subunit expression and NAD(P)H activity and reactive oxygen species (ROS) production in the hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus (PVN) were increased in HS + VEH rats but were decreased by DMB. DMB had no effects on above measured parameters in NS rats. The results suggest that long-term HS diet intake causes elevation in TMAO in the circulation and brain, which is associated with increased neuroinflammation and oxidative stress in the PVN, an important cardiovascular regulatory center. Inhibition of TMAO generation ameliorates HS-induced sympathetic excitation and hypertension by reducing neuroinflammation and oxidative stress in the PVN.

Grip strength is an important biomarker reflecting muscle strength, and depression is a psychiatric disorder all over the world. Several studies found a significant inverse association between grip strength and depression, and there is also evidence for common physiological mechanisms between them. We used twin data from Qingdao, China to calculate genetic correlations, and we performed a bivariate GWAS to explore potential SNPs, genes, and pathways in common between grip strength and depression. 139 pairs of Dizygotic twins were used for bivariate GWAS. VEAGSE2 and PASCAL software were used for gene-based analysis and pathway enrichment analysis, respectively. And the resulting SNPs were subjected to eQTL analysis and pleiotropy analysis. Objectives. Acupuncture is used worldwide to relieve both acute and chronic pain. Patient-controlled analgesia (PCA) is also frequently used for postoperative pain relief. However, there are few meta-analyses of the efficacy of acupuncture with PCA in reducing acute postoperative pain. This meta-analysis aimed to assess the effectiveness of acupuncture with PCA in relieving acute pain after back surgery. Methods. We searched seven databases (Cochrane Library, Web of Science, PubMed, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Wanfang database, Chongqing VIP (VIP), and Chinese BioMedical Literature Database (CBM)-from 1949 until now) without language restrictions for randomized controlled trials, including patients undergoing back surgery and receiving PCA alone or treated with acupuncture/sham acupuncture + PCA for pain relief. This meta-analysis assessed pain intensity, with visual analogue scale (VAS) score and postoperative opioid dosage as primary outcomes. Results. A hybrid powder-solid ramjet (HPSR) that combined the advantages of a solid rocket ramjet (SRJ) and a powder ramjet engine was investigated in this research. To improve the combustion efficiency and optimize the inner wall thermal protection of the afterburner, the effects of the air inlet angle on the combustion and wall ablation environment were studied. The standard k-ε model, the eddy-dissipation model (EDM), and the boron particle ignition and combustion model were adopted to simulate the two-phase flow in the afterburners with different air inlet angles (45°, 60°, 75°, and 90°). The results showed that the global flow field and the distribution of the vortexes in the afterburner that had a significant influence on the ablation environment of the inner wall and the combustion efficiency were determined by the impact effect and the squeezing effect of the ram air on the primary fuel gas, which was affected by the air inlet angle. As the air inlet angle increased, the total combustion efficiency of the four cases first increased and then decreased, reaching 80.38%, 81.64%, 84.34%, and 83.26% for angles of 45°, 60°, 75°, and 90°, respectively. At the same time, the inner wall ablation became more severe because both the erosion effect of the condensed phase particles and the gas-flow scouring effect were enhanced, and a large temperature gradient was generated on the inner wall. The study results can provide a reference for designing the air inlet angle of an HPSR.

Objectives: Neuropsychological tests are an important basis for the memory impairment diagnosis in Alzheimer’s disease (AD). However, multiple memory tests might be conflicting within-subjects and lead to uncertain diagnoses in some cases. This study proposed a framework to diagnose the uncertain cases of memory impairment.Methods: We collected 2,386 samples including AD, mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and cognitive normal (CN) using 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) and three different neuropsychological tests (Mini-Mental State Examination, Alzheimer’s Disease Assessment Scale-Cognitive Subscale, and Clinical Dementia Rating) from the Alzheimer’s Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI). A deep learning (DL) framework using FDG-PET was proposed to diagnose uncertain memory impairment cases that were conflicting between tests. Subsequent ANOVA, chi-squared, and t-test were used to explain the potential causes of uncertain cases.Results: For certain cases in the testing set, the proposed DL framework outperformed other methods with 95.65% accuracy. For the uncertain cases, its positive diagnoses had a significant (p < 0.001) worse decline in memory function than negative diagnoses in a longitudinal study of 40 months on average. In the memory-impaired group, uncertain cases were mainly explained by an AD metabolism pattern but mild in extent (p < 0.05). In the healthy group, uncertain cases were mainly explained by a non-energetic mental state (p < 0.001) measured using a global deterioration scale (GDS), with a significant depression-related metabolism pattern detected (p < 0.05).Conclusion: A DL framework for diagnosing uncertain cases of memory impairment is proposed. Proved by longitudinal tracing of its diagnoses, it showed clinical validity and had application potential. Its valid diagnoses also provided evidence and explanation of uncertain cases based on the neurodegeneration and depression mental state.

Abstract Background Acute lung injury (ALI) and/or acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) are critical life-threatening syndromes characterized by the infiltration of a large number of granulocytes (mainly neutrophils) that lead to an excessive inflammatory response. Emodin (Emo) is a naturally occurring anthraquinone derivative and an active ingredient of Chinese medicine. It is believed to have anti-inflammatory effects. In this study, we examined the impact of Emo on the pulmonary inflammatory response and the granulocytes function in a rat model of lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced ALI. Results Treatment with Emo protected rat against LPS-induced ALI. Compared to untreated rat, Emo-treated rat exhibited significantly ameliorated lung pathological changes and decreased tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and interleukin-1β (IL-1β). However, Emo has no protective effect on the rat model of acute lung injury with granulocyte deficiency. In addition, treatment with Emo enhanced the bactericidal capacity of LPS-induced granulocytes via the up-regulation of the ability of granulocytes to phagocytize bacteria and generate neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs). Emo also downregulated the respiratory burst and the expression of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in LPS-stimulated granulocytes, alleviating the damage of granulocytes to surrounding tissues. Finally, Emo can accelerate the resolution of inflammation by promoting apoptosis of granulocytes. Conclusion Our results provide the evidence that Emo could ameliorates LPS-induced ALI via its anti-inflammatory action by modulating the function of granulocytes. Emo may be a promising preventive and therapeutic agent in the treatment of ALI.

Receptor-mediated active targeting and tumor microenvironment responsive systems from polymeric micelles have been studied for rapid cellular internalization and triggered drug release. Previously we have constructed redox-responsive polymeric micelles composed of vitamin E succinate conjugated hyaluronic acid (HA-ss-TOS), which are able to actively target CD44 proteins and quickly release loaded drugs upon exposure to high levels of glutathione (GSH) in tumor cells. In the present study, we found that despite different cellular internalization mechanisms, micelles showed strong antineoplastic effects on 4T1 and B16F10 cells due to redox responsiveness. HA-ss-TOS-PTX micelles exhibited an excellent tumor targeting ability and prolonged retention time compared to Taxol in vivo. In addition, a superior antitumor effect was achieved compared to PTX-loaded insensitive micelles (HA-TOS-PTX) and Taxol. Our results revealed that PTX-loaded HA-ss-TOS micelles could enhance the antineoplastic efficacy of PTX for breast cancer and melanoma treatment and, thus, deserve further attention.

Background: Gastric cancer (GC) is one of the most common and poor prognosis malignancy in the world. The Family with sequence similarity 83 (FAM83) comprises of eight members of A–H. Accumulating evidence confirmed important roles for FAM83 family in tumorigenesis and progression. However, the prognostic values of FAM83 family in GC still have not been clarified.Methods: ONCOMINE, UALCAN, GEPIA, THE HUMAN PROTEIN ATLAS, Kaplan–Meier Plotter, cBioPortal, DAVID, STRING and TIMER databases and R software were adopted in this study.Results: In this study, we demonstrated that the mRNA levels of FAM83 B/C/D/H were significantly up-regulated in stomach adenocarcinoma (STAD), but the protein level of FAM83G/H were remarkable lowly in STAD. Next, FAM83C/D/G/H were significantly associated with tumor stages in STAD patients. Then, the mutation rate of FAM83 family members in STAD patients was 46%, and the highest mutation rate was FAM83H (23%). Furthermore, the functions of FAM83 family and their 259 co-expression genes were primarily related to Shigellosis, RNA degradation and Ribosome biogenesis in eukaryotes pathway. Besides, we have established the prognostic model of FAM83 family in STAD, including the prognostic model of STAD patients (FAM83C/D/G), STAD with lymph node metastasis (FAM83C/D/G/H) and STAD with ERBB2 high expression (FAM83G/H). FAM83C/D high expression with a poor prognosis, while FAM83G/H high expression with a favorable prognosis of STAD. Additionally, we found that the expression of FAM83C/D/G/H were significantly correlated with the infiltration of six types of immune cells [B cells, CD8+T cells, CD4+T cells, macrophages and Myeloid dendritic cells (DC)], whereas CD4+T cells and Macrophage cells have higher risk scores (HR > 1) when FAM83C lowly expression and FAM83D highly expression. The risk score of NK cells was significantly reduced when FAM83G lowly expression and FAM83H highly expression (HR < 1).Conclusion: These findings suggested that FAM83C/D/G/H might play key roles in STAD tumorigenesis and progression, and FAM83C/D might be risk factors but FAM83G/H might be favorable prognostic factors for STAD patients. In addition, CD4+T cells and Macrophage cells may be the promoters of FAM83D in progression of STAD, while NK cells may promote the protective effect of FAM83H on STAD patients.

To study the influence of mineral admixtures on concrete’s mechanical properties after a low-temperature exposure, green concrete was prepared by mixing fly ash and slag at different replacement rates. By analysing the changes to concrete’s mechanical properties and the damage layer thickness under different ambient temperatures (20, −10, −20, −30, and −40 °C), the change rule of concrete at low temperatures was explored. The results revealed that the compressive strength of concrete, containing either fly ash or slag, peaked at 30 °C; moreover, the slag concrete’s flexural and splitting tensile strength peaked at −40 °C. The best mechanical properties were observed for a fly ash-to-slag ratio of 1:2 (F10S20; i.e., 10% fly ash and 20% slag) and its compressive strength at different temperatures was higher than that of concrete, containing 30% fly ash (F30) or 30% slag (S30), but the flexural and splitting tensile strength was lower than S30. Further, as the temperature decreased, the fly ash concrete’s damaged layer thickness gradually increased. When the content of fly ash and slag were both 15% (F15S15), the damaged layer thickness was minimal at different low temperatures, especially at −30 °C, where the thickness was only 8.31 mm.

BackgroundColorectal cancer (CRC), one of the most common malignant tumors worldwide, has a high mortality rate, especially for patients with CRC liver metastasis (CLM). However, CLM pathogenesis remains unclear.MethodsWe integrated multiple cohort datasets and databases to clarify and verify potential key candidate biomarkers and signal transduction pathways in CLM. GEO2R, DAVID 6.8, ImageGP, STRING, UALCAN, ONCOMINE, THE HUMAN PROTEIN ATLAS, GEPIA 2.0, cBioPortal, TIMER 2.0, DRUGSURV, CRN, GSEA 4.0.3, FUNRICH 3.1.3 and R 4.0.3 were utilized in this study.ResultsSixty-three pairs of matched colorectal primary cancer and liver metastatic gene expression profiles were screened from three gene expression profiles (GSE6988, GSE14297 and GSE81558). Thirty-one up-regulated genes and four down-regulated genes were identified from these three gene expression profiles and verified by another gene expression profiles (GSE 49355) and TCGA database. Two pathways (IGFBP-IGF signaling pathway and complement-coagulation cascade), eighteen key differentially expressed genes (DEGs), six hub genes (SPARCL1, CDH2, CP, HP, TF and SERPINA5) and two biomarkers (CDH2 and SPARCL1) with significantly prognostic values were screened by multi-omics data analysis and verified by Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) and The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) cohort.ConclusionsIn this study, we identified a robust set of potential candidate biomarkers in CLM, which would provide potential value for early diagnosis and prognosis, and would promote molecular targeting therapy for CRC and CLM.

Railway networks systems are by design open and accessible to people, but this presents challenges in the prevention of events such as terrorism, trespass, and suicide fatalities. With the rapid advancement of machine learning, numerous computer vision methods have been developed in closed-circuit television (CCTV) surveillance systems for the purposes of managing public spaces. These methods are built based on multiple types of sensors and are designed to automatically detect static objects and unexpected events, monitor people, and prevent potential dangers. This survey focuses on recently developed CCTV surveillance methods for rail networks, discusses the challenges they face, their advantages and disadvantages and a vision for future railway surveillance systems. State-of-the-art methods for object detection and behaviour recognition applied to rail network surveillance systems are introduced, and the ethics of handling personal data and the use of automated systems are also considered.

Summary: ADAMTSs (a disintegrin and metalloproteinase with thrombospondin motifs) are secreted metalloproteinases that play a major role in the assembly and degradation of the extracellular matrix (ECM). In this study, we show that ADAMTS18, produced by the epithelial cells of distal airways and mesenchymal cells in lung apex at early embryonic stages, serves as a morphogen in lung development. ADAMTS18 deficiency leads to reduced number and length of bronchi, tipped lung apexes, and dilated alveoli. These developmental defects worsen lipopolysaccharide-induced acute lung injury and bleomycin-induced lung fibrosis in adult Adamts18-deficient mice. ADAMTS18 deficiency also causes increased levels of fibrillin1 and fibrillin2, bronchial microfibril accumulation, decreased focal adhesion kinase signaling, and disruption of F-actin organization. Our findings indicate that ECM homeostasis mediated by ADAMTS18 is pivotal in airway branching morphogenesis.

Vitamin C is a water-soluble antioxidant. Reducing the level of oxidative stress can alleviate depression. Therefore, we investigated the correlation between dietary vitamin C intake and the risk of depressive symptoms in the general population. Data from the 2007–2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey were used in our study. The dietary intake of vitamin C was assessed by two 24-h dietary recalls. Depressive symptoms were assessed with the Patient Health Questionnaire-9. Logistic regression and restricted cubic spline models were applied to assess the relationship between dietary vitamin C intake and the risk of depressive symptoms. The multivariate adjusted odds ratio (95% confidence interval) of depressive symptoms for the highest vs. lowest category of dietary vitamin C intake and vitamin C intake derived from vegetables were 0.73 (0.58–0.91) and 0.73 (0.56–0.95). In subgroup analyses, dietary vitamin C intake was negatively correlated with the risk of depressive symptoms in females 18–39 years old and 40–59 year-old groups. A dose-response analysis showed that there was a nonlinear relationship between dietary vitamin C intake and the risk of depressive symptoms. Dietary vitamin C intake and vitamin C intake derived from vegetables were inversely associated with the risk of depressive symptoms among the general population. We recommend increasing the intake of vegetables in daily diet.

With the advent of Big Data Imaging Analytics applied to neuroimaging, datasets from multiple sites need to be pooled into larger samples. However, heterogeneity across different scanners, protocols and populations, renders the task of finding underlying disease signatures challenging. The current work investigates the value of multi-task learning in finding disease signatures that generalize across studies and populations. Herein, we present a multi-task learning type of formulation, in which different tasks are from different studies and populations being pooled together. We test this approach in an MRI study of the neuroanatomy of schizophrenia (SCZ) by pooling data from 3 different sites and populations: Philadelphia, Sao Paulo and Tianjin (50 controls and 50 patients from each site), which posed integration challenges due to variability in disease chronicity, treatment exposure, and data collection. Some existing methods are also tested for comparison purposes. Experiments show that classification accuracy of multi-site data outperformed that of single-site data and pooled data using multi-task feature learning, and also outperformed other comparison methods. Several anatomical regions were identified to be common discriminant features across sites. These included prefrontal, superior temporal, insular, anterior cingulate cortex, temporo-limbic and striatal regions consistently implicated in the pathophysiology of schizophrenia, as well as the cerebellum, precuneus, and fusiform, middle temporal, inferior parietal, postcentral, angular, lingual and middle occipital gyri. These results indicate that the proposed multi-task learning method is robust in finding consistent and reliable structural brain abnormalities associated with SCZ across different sites, in the presence of multiple sources of heterogeneity.
