IntroductionUrban green space (GS) exposure is recognized as a nature-based strategy for addressing urban challenges. However, the stress relieving effects and mechanisms of GS exposure are yet to be fully explored. The development of machine learning and street view images offers a method for large-scale measurement and precise empirical analysis.MethodsThis study focuses on the central area of Shanghai, examining the complex effects of GS exposure on psychological stress perception. By constructing a multidimensional psychological stress perception scale and integrating machine learning algorithms with extensive street view images data, we successfully developed a framework for measuring urban stress perception. Using the scores from the psychological stress perception scale provided by volunteers as labeled data, we predicted the psychological stress perception in Shanghai's central urban area through the Support Vector Machine (SVM) algorithm. Additionally, this study employed the interpretable machine learning model eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) algorithm to reveal the nonlinear relationship between GS exposure and residents' psychological stress.ResultsResults indicate that the GS exposure in central Shanghai is generally low, with significant spatial heterogeneity. GS exposure has a positive impact on reducing residents' psychological stress. However, this effect has a threshold; when GS exposure exceeds 0.35, its impact on stress perception gradually diminishes.DiscussionWe recommend combining the threshold of stress perception with GS exposure to identify urban spaces, thereby guiding precise strategies for enhancing GS. This research not only demonstrates the complex mitigating effect of GS exposure on psychological stress perception but also emphasizes the importance of considering the “dose-effect” of it in urban planning and construction. Based on open-source data, the framework and methods developed in this study have the potential to be applied in different urban environments, thus providing more comprehensive support for future urban planning.

ObjectivesThis current study is based on a set of visual motion sensitivity tests, investigating the correlation between visual motion sensitivity and diabetic retinopathy (DR) in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), thereby furnishing a scientific rationale for preventing and controlling DR.MethodsThis research was conducted by a combination of questionnaire collection and on-site investigation that involved 542 T2DM recruited from a community. The visual motion sensitivity determined the visual motion perception of the participants across three spatial frequencies (low, medium, and high) for both the first- and second-order contrast. The logistic regression model was adopted to investigate the relationship between visual motion sensitivity and DR prevalence. Besides, the Pearson correlation analysis was used to analyze the factors influencing visual motion sensitivity and restricted cubic spline (RCS) functions to assess the dose–response relationship between visual motion sensitivity and glycated hemoglobin.ResultsAmong 542 subjects, there are 162 cases of DR, with a prevalence rate of 29.89%. After adjusting factors of age, gender, glycated hemoglobin, duration of diabetes, BMI, and hypertension, we found that the decline in first- and second-order high spatial frequency sensitivity increased the risk for DR [odds ratio (OR): 1.519 (1.065, 2.168), 1.249 (1.068, 1.460)]. The decline in perceptual ability of second-order low, medium, and high spatial frequency sensitivity is a risk factor for moderate to severe DR [OR: 1.556 (1.116, 2.168), 1.388 (1.066, 1.806), 1.476 (1.139, 1.912)]. The first-order and the second-order high spatial frequency sensitivity are significantly positively correlated with glycated hemoglobin (r = 0.105, p = 0.015 and r = 0.119, p = 0.005, respectively).ConclusionVisual motion sensitivity especially for the second-order high spatial frequency stimuli emerges as a significant predictor of DR in T2DM, offering a sensitive diagnostic tool for early detection.

With the development and widespread adoption of smart machines, researchers across various disciplines and fields are exploring the contributions of computers and intelligent machines to human science and society through interdisciplinary collaboration. In this study, we investigated the potential applications of artificial intelligence and multi-source big data in the selection and design of urban greenways, using the city of Nanjing as a case study. Utilizing computer vision technology and the DeepLabV3+ neural network model, we analyzed over 320,000 street view images and 530,000 fine-grained urban data points from Nanjing. We also trained the place space material quantification model using the Street Space Greening Structure (S.S.G.S) dataset. This dataset not only achieved high-precision semantic segmentation but also surpassed previous datasets in predicting greenery at the street level. The performance metrics for this model are as follows: MIoU is 0.6344, Recall is 0.7287, and Precision is 0.8074. Through Robust regression, we identified several micro and macro-level factors influencing the Panoramic View Green View Index (PVGVI). The results indicate that multiple factors have significant positive or negative effects on PVGVI. This research not only provides new decision-making tools for landscape architecture and urban planning but also opens new avenues for applying artificial intelligence in urban environmental studies.

Universal circuit breakers are crucial devices in power systems, and the accuracy of their fault diagnosis is vital. However, existing diagnostic models suffer from low feature extraction rates and low diagnostic accuracy. In this paper, we propose a novel approach for fault diagnosis of universal circuit breakers based on analyzing vibration signals generated during the closing operation. Firstly, the vibration signal was decomposed into multiple modal components using Variable Mode Decomposition (VMD), and the modal components were subjected to time and frequency domain feature extraction. Then, the extracted features were fused and normalized to construct a training dataset for the proposed model. We propose a Deep Belief Network (DBN) diagnostic model based on the Whale Optimization Algorithm (WOA), where the WOA is employed to optimize the hyperparameters of the DBN. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed VMD and WOA-DBN model achieved an average accuracy of 96.63%. This method enhanced the accuracy of feature extraction from vibration signals and outperformed traditional diagnostic models when using a single vibration signal for fault diagnosis of universal circuit breakers. It provides a novel solution for early fault diagnosis of universal circuit breakers.

Global climate change has exacerbated alterations in urban thermal environments, significantly impacting the daily lives and health of city residents. Measuring and understanding urban land surface temperatures (LST) and their influencing factors is important in addressing global climate change and enhancing the well-being of residents. However, due to limitations in data precision and analytical methods, existing studies often overlook the microscale examination closely related to residents’ daily lives, and lack a deep exploration of the spatial heterogeneity of the influencing factors. This leads to these results being ineffective in guiding the planning and construction of cities. Taking Shenzhen as a case study, our study investigates the effects of various microscale build environment characteristics of LST using street view images and machine learning. A convolutional neural network model adopting the SegNet architecture is used to perform semantic segmentation on street view images, extracting features of the microscale urban-built environment. The LST is inverted through the Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform. By using Multiscale Geographically Weighted Regression (MGWR) models, our study reveals the comprehensive impact of the urban-built environment on LST and its significant spatial heterogeneity. The findings indicate that the proportions of sky, roads, and buildings are positively correlated with LST, while trees have a significant cooling effect. Although earth and water can reduce LST, their overall contribution is minimal due to limitations in their area and distribution patterns. This study not only reveals the key factors affecting urban LST at the microscale but also emphasizes the necessity of considering the spatial heterogeneity of these factors’ impacts. This suggests the need for targeted strategies for different areas to effectively improve the urban thermal environment and achieve sustainable urban development.

Exposure to green spaces (GSs) has been perceived as a natural and sustainable solution to urban challenges, playing a vital role in rapid urbanization. Previous studies, due to their lack of direct spatial alignment and attention to a human-scale perspective, struggled to comprehensively measure urban GS exposure. To address this gap, our study introduces a novel GS exposure assessment framework, employing machine learning and street view images. We conducted a large-scale, fine-grained empirical study focused on downtown Shanghai. Our findings indicate a pronounced hierarchical structure in the distribution of GS exposure, which initially increases and subsequently decreases as one moves outward from the city center. Further, from both the micro and macro perspectives, we employed structural equation modeling and Geodetector to investigate the impact of the urban built environment on GS exposure. Our results highlight that maintaining an appropriate level of architectural density, enhancing the combination of sidewalks with GSs, emphasizing the diversity of regional characteristics, and avoiding excessive concentration of functions are effective approaches for increasing urban GS exposure and promoting human wellbeing. Our study offers scientific insights for urban planners and administrators, holding significant implications for achieving sustainable urban development.

Abstract Mental illness is highly prevalent nowadays, constituting a major cause of distress in people’s life with impact on society’s health and well-being. Mental illness is a complex multi-factorial disease associated with individual risk factors and a variety of socioeconomic, clinical associations. In order to capture these complex associations expressed in a wide variety of textual data, including social media posts, interviews, and clinical notes, natural language processing (NLP) methods demonstrate promising improvements to empower proactive mental healthcare and assist early diagnosis. We provide a narrative review of mental illness detection using NLP in the past decade, to understand methods, trends, challenges and future directions. A total of 399 studies from 10,467 records were included. The review reveals that there is an upward trend in mental illness detection NLP research. Deep learning methods receive more attention and perform better than traditional machine learning methods. We also provide some recommendations for future studies, including the development of novel detection methods, deep learning paradigms and interpretable models.

BackgroundIn recent years, the COVID-19 pandemic has brought great changes to public health, society, and the economy. Social media provide a platform for people to discuss health concerns, living conditions, and policies during the epidemic, allowing policymakers to use this content to analyze the public emotions and attitudes for decision-making. ObjectiveThe aim of this study was to use deep learning–based methods to understand public emotions on topics related to the COVID-19 pandemic in the United Kingdom through a comparative geolocation and text mining analysis on Twitter. MethodsOver 500,000 tweets related to COVID-19 from 48 different cities in the United Kingdom were extracted, with the data covering the period of the last 2 years (from February 2020 to November 2021). We leveraged three advanced deep learning–based models for topic modeling to geospatially analyze the sentiment, emotion, and topics of tweets in the United Kingdom: SenticNet 6 for sentiment analysis, SpanEmo for emotion recognition, and combined topic modeling (CTM). ResultsWe observed a significant change in the number of tweets as the epidemiological situation and vaccination situation shifted over the 2 years. There was a sharp increase in the number of tweets from January 2020 to February 2020 due to the outbreak of COVID-19 in the United Kingdom. Then, the number of tweets gradually declined as of February 2020. Moreover, with identification of the COVID-19 Omicron variant in the United Kingdom in November 2021, the number of tweets grew again. Our findings reveal people’s attitudes and emotions toward topics related to COVID-19. For sentiment, approximately 60% of tweets were positive, 20% were neutral, and 20% were negative. For emotion, people tended to express highly positive emotions in the beginning of 2020, while expressing highly negative emotions over time toward the end of 2021. The topics also changed during the pandemic. ConclusionsThrough large-scale text mining of Twitter, our study found meaningful differences in public emotions and topics regarding the COVID-19 pandemic among different UK cities. Furthermore, efficient location-based and time-based comparative analysis can be used to track people’s thoughts and feelings, and to understand their behaviors. Based on our analysis, positive attitudes were common during the pandemic; optimism and anticipation were the dominant emotions. With the outbreak and epidemiological change, the government developed control measures and vaccination policies, and the topics also shifted over time. Overall, the proportion and expressions of emojis, sentiments, emotions, and topics varied geographically and temporally. Therefore, our approach of exploring public emotions and topics on the pandemic from Twitter can potentially lead to informing how public policies are received in a particular geographical area.

Abstract In dynamic scene deblurring, recent neural network–based methods have been very successful. But with the improvement of deep deblurring performance, network structure and learning become more complicated. Compared with large‐scale network parameters and complex network structures, an iterative multi‐scale residual network to achieve a more effective parameter sharing scheme is proposed. In each iterative unit, fast multi‐scale residual blocks to replace superimposed convolutional layers or classic residual blocks are used. On the basis of preventing model overfitting, the receptive field of the network is increased. At the same time, the gated recurrent unit is introduced to connect modules of different stages. The model does not rely on the estimation of the blur kernel and directly generates sharp images in an end‐to‐end manner. The experimental structure on the benchmark dataset and real‐world images showed that this method has better quality than the existing methods in terms of large‐scale blur and subjective perception effects, both in quantitative and qualitative terms.

Urbanization causes alteration in atmospheric, soil, and hydrological factors and substantially affects a range of morphological and physiological plant traits. Correspondingly, plants might adopt different strategies to adapt to urbanization promotion or pressure. Understanding of plant traits responding to urbanization will reveal the capacity of plant adaptation and optimize the choice of plant species in urbanization green. In this study, four different functional groups (herbs, shrubs, subcanopies, and canopies, eight plant species totally) located in urban, suburban, and rural areas were selected and eight replicated plants were selected for each species at each site. Their physiological and photosynthetic properties and heavy metal concentrations were quantified to reveal plant adaptive strategies to urbanization. The herb and shrub species had significantly higher starch and soluble sugar contents in urban than in suburban areas. Urbanization decreased the maximum photosynthetic rates and total chlorophyll contents of the canopies (Engelhardtia roxburghiana and Schima superba). The herbs (Lophatherum gracile and Alpinia chinensis) and shrubs (Ardisia quinquegona and Psychotria rubra) species in urban areas had significantly lower nitrogen (N) allocated in the cell wall and leaf δ15N values but higher heavy metal concentrations than those in suburban areas. The canopy and subcanopy (Diospyros morrisiana and Cratoxylum cochinchinense) species adapt to the urbanization via reducing resource acquisition but improving defense capacity, while the herb and shrub species improve resource acquisition to adapt to the urbanization. Our current studies indicated that functional groups affected the responses of plant adaptive strategies to the urbanization.

Suicide is one of the leading causes of death worldwide. At the same time, the widespread use of social media has led to an increase in people posting their suicide notes online. Therefore, designing a learning model that can aid the detection of suicide notes online is of great importance. However, current methods cannot capture both local and global semantic features. In this paper, we propose a transformer-based model named TransformerRNN, which can effectively extract contextual and long-term dependency information by using a transformer encoder and a Bi-directional Long Short-Term Memory (BiLSTM) structure. We evaluate our model with baseline approaches on a dataset collected from online sources (including 659 suicide notes, 431 last statements, and 2000 neutral posts). Our proposed TransformerRNN achieves 95.0%, 94.9% and 94.9% performance in P, R and F1-score metrics respectively and therefore outperforms comparable machine learning and state-of-the-art deep learning models. The proposed model is effective for classifying suicide notes, which in turn, may help to develop suicide prevention technologies for social media.

The rapid infrastructure development in densely populated areas has had several negative impacts. Increases in urbanization have led to increased LST, and urban ecological systems have been negatively affected. Urban heat islands (UHIs) can be mitigated by understanding how current and future LST phenomena are linked to changes in landscape composition and land use cover (LUC). This study investigated the multi-scale spatial analysis of LUC and LST in Tianjin using remote sensing and GIS data. We used Landsat data from 2005 to 2020 to examine the effects of LUC on LST in urban agglomeration. According to the Urban Thermal Field Variance Index (UTFVI), the city’s ecological evaluation was carried out. Results show that changes in LUC and other anthropogenic activities affect the spatial distribution of LST. For the study years (2004–2009), the estimated mean LST in Tianjin was 25.32 °C, 26.73 °C, 27.62 °C, and 27.93 °C. Between LST and urban areas with other infrastructures, and NDBI, significant positive correlation values were found about 0.53, 0.48, and 0.76 (p < 0.05), respectively. Temperatures would almost certainly increase by 3.87 °C to 7.26 °C as a result of decreased plant cover and increased settlements. These findings strongly imply a correlation between LST and the vegetation index. Between 2005 and 2020, the anticipated increase in LST of 3.39 °C is expected to harm urban environmental health. This study demonstrates how Tianjin and other cities can achieve ecological sustainability.

To detect the joint angle of the manipulator accurately, a measuring method based on an IMU sensor is proposed. The sensor's attitude angles and corresponding rotation matrix are obtained according to the data of three-axis gyroscope and three-axis accelerometer. During the installation, the sensor's Z-axis direction is kept along with the motor's rotation axis direction, so that the angle of the sensor rotating around its Z-axis, which is the rotation angle of the motor, can be calculated by comparing the rotation relationship between the sensor's initial position and the sensor's position after the motor rotating. The largest source of result error derives from the inconsistent between the sensor's Z-axis direction and the motor's rotation axis direction. Consequently, an installation's error compensation method is designed to correct the sensor's Z-axis to the motor's rotation axis by rotating the related motor. The experiments show that the method can measure the joint angle of the manipulator accurately and calibrate the installation error effectively. The measurement result errors are confined
