IntroductionThe Eastern Mediterranean Regional Office (EMRO) region accounts for almost 8% of all global Mycobacterium tuberculosis (TB) cases, with TB incidence rates ranging from 1 per 100,000 per year in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to 204 per 100,000 in Djibouti. The national surveillance data from the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region on the epidemiology and antimicrobial resistance trends of TB, including MDR-TB remains scarce.MethodsA retrospective 12-year analysis of N = 8,086 non-duplicate diagnostic Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTB complex) isolates from the UAE was conducted. Data were generated through routine patient care during the 2010–2021 years, collected by trained personnel and reported by participating surveillance sites to the UAE National Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) Surveillance program. Data analysis was conducted with WHONET, a windows-based microbiology laboratory database management software developed by the World Health Organization Collaborating Center for Surveillance of Antimicrobial Resistance, Boston, United States (https://whonet.org/).ResultsA total of 8,086 MTB-complex isolates were analyzed. MTB-complex was primarily isolated from respiratory samples (sputum 80.1%, broncho-alveolar lavage 4.6%, pleural fluid 4.1%). Inpatients accounted for 63.2%, including 1.3% from ICU. Nationality was known for 84.3% of patients, including 3.8% Emiratis. Of UAE non-nationals, 80.5% were from 110 countries, most of which were Asian countries. India accounted for 20.8%, Pakistan 13.6%, Philippines 12.7%, and Bangladesh 7.8%. Rifampicin-resistant MTB-complex isolates (RR-TB) were found in 2.8% of the isolates, resistance to isoniazid, streptomycin, pyrazinamide, and ethambutol, was 8.9, 6.9, 3.4 and 0.4%, respectively. A slightly increasing trend of resistance among MTB-complex was observed for rifampicin from 2.5% (2010) to 2.8% (2021).ConclusionInfections due to MTB-complex are relatively uncommon in the United Arab Emirates compared to other countries in the MENA region. Most TB patients in the UAE are of Asian origin, mainly from countries with a high prevalence of TB. Resistance to first line anti-tuberculous drugs is generally low, however increasing trends for MDR-TB mainly rifampicin linked resistance is a major concern. MDR-TB was not associated with a higher mortality, admission to ICU, or increased length of hospitalization as compared to non-MDR-TB.

IntroductionAcinetobacter spp., in particular A. baumannii, are opportunistic pathogens linked to nosocomial pneumonia (particularly ventilator-associated pneumonia), central-line catheter-associated blood stream infections, meningitis, urinary tract infections, surgical-site infections, and other types of wound infections. A. baumannii is able to acquire or upregulate various resistance determinants, making it frequently multidrug-resistant, and contributing to increased mortality and morbidity. Data on the epidemiology, levels, and trends of antimicrobial resistance of Acinetobacter spp. in clinical settings is scarce in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and Middle East and North Africa (MENA) regions.MethodsA retrospective 12-year analysis of 17,564 non-duplicate diagnostic Acinetobacter spp. isolates from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) was conducted. Data was generated at 317 surveillance sites by routine patient care during 2010–2021, collected by trained personnel and reported by participating surveillance sites to the UAE National AMR Surveillance program. Data analysis was conducted with WHONET.1ResultsSpecies belonging to the A. calcoaceticus-baumannii complex were mostly reported (86.7%). They were most commonly isolated from urine (32.9%), sputum (29.0%), and soft tissue (25.1%). Resistance trends to antibiotics from different classes during the surveillance period showed a decreasing trend. Specifically, there was a significant decrease in resistance to imipenem, meropenem, and amikacin. Resistance was lowest among Acinetobacter species to both colistin and tigecycline. The percentages of multidrug-resistant (MDR) and possibly extensively drug-resistant (XDR) isolates was reduced by almost half between the beginning of the study in 2010 and its culmination in 2021. Carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter spp. (CRAB) was associated with a higher mortality (RR: 5.7), a higher admission to ICU (RR 3.3), and an increased length of stay (LOS; 13 excess inpatient days per CRAB case), as compared to Carbapenem-susceptible Acinetobacter spp.ConclusionCarbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter spp. are associated with poorer clinical outcomes, and higher associated costs, as compared to carbapenem-susceptible Acinetobacter spp. A decreasing trend of MDR Acinetobacter spp., as well as resistance to all antibiotic classes under surveillance was observed during 2010 to 2021. Further studies are needed to explore the reasons and underlying factors leading to this remarkable decrease of resistance over time.

Background: Environmental and clinical carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii (CRAb) isolated in a hospital of the Eastern Region of Saudi Arabia were compared to assess the potential environmental contamination by this pathogen. Methods: Frequent-hand-touch surfaces of intensive care (ICU), medical (MW), and surgical (SW) units were randomly sampled for a month-long period, and the CRAb identified were compared to clinical isolates of the same period by PFGE and blaOXA-51-like gene sequencing. Carbapenemase and ribosomal methylase genes, ISAba1 link to blaOXA51-like or to blaOXA-23, respectively were detected by PCR. Results: CRAb was identified from 35.5% of surfaces. All environmental and clinical isolates were multi- or extremely drug resistant. PFGE of all clinical (n = 21) and selected environmental (n = 30) isolates identified a singleton and four clusters, all of which included both clinical and environmental isolates. In the two largest clusters isolates carried blaOXA-66, ISAba1-linked blaOXA-23, and were from the ICU, MW and the male SW. Isolates of the female SW carried blaOXA-69, ISAba1-linked blaOXA-23 and blaGES-11. A pair of clinical and environmental CRAb from the Male SW harboured blaNDM-1 in addition to ISAba1-linked blaOXA-94. Conclusion: A worrying level of environmental contamination, often by CRAb belonging to international clones, was revealed, highlighting the importance of environmental hygiene. Objectives: Searching for the presence of the mcr-1 gene in colistin resistant Enterobacteriaceae in countries of the Arabian Peninsula. Methods: Seventy-five independent, colistin resistant Enterobacteriaceae strains isolated from clinical cases in Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates were tested by PCR for the mcr-1 gene. mcr-1 positive strains were genotyped, and their antibiotic susceptibility was established. The mcr-1 containing plasmids were mobilized into Escherichia coli K-12 and their sequence was determined. Results: Four E. coli isolates (two from Bahrain, one from Saudi Arabia and one from the United Arab Emirates) were identified carrying the mcr-1 gene on conjugative plasmids. They belonged to global multidrug resistant E. coli clones, i.e. ST648, ST224, ST68 and ST131, respectively. One strain carried the blaNDM-1 carbapenemase gene. Three strains carried mcr-1 on IncI2 type plasmids, one of them also harboring a blaCTX-M-64 gene. In the fourth strain mcr-1 was located on a 240 kb IncHI2 plasmid co-harboring 13 other resistance genes. Conclusions: This is the first report on the presence of the plasmid-coded mcr-1 gene in a variety of multi-resistant clinical isolates from the Arabian Peninsula indicating that several commonly used antibiotics can potentially facilitate the spread of mcr-1 carrying strains, or directly, mcr-1 containing plasmids.

The article focuses on the characteristics of forcible entries into objects and the term "breaching", which is often used interchangeably with this activity. The article further addresses the issue of fragments scattering when using a charge to overcome chain-link fences. The introductory chapter describes the execution of training in this field using the exercise facilities that are built for this purpose in military training areas. When conducting explosive forcible entry training, the safe distance for intervening teams and non-participants is determined using given formulas. The purpose of the simulation, mathematical calculations and experiment was to assess the extent to which fragments scattering occurs during explosive overcoming of these fences and whether the procedures used to determine the safe distance for non-participants are sufficient.

Abstract This paper theoretically and empirically investigates the puzzling decade-long concurrence of expansionary monetary and fiscal policies, decreasing credit flows, fall in price levels, and sluggish real activity observed in the Euro area from the outset of the 2007–2008 financial crisis. To this end, we propose a monetary general equilibrium model that clarifies the transmission mechanisms, debt–deflation channels, and the paramount role of financial leverage decisions underlying these peculiarities. On this basis, a vector error correction model is specified which confirms the theoretical predictions and provides insights into the elements specific to the long-term relations. In addition, the estimated impulse response functions document the associated short-term dynamics outlining the debt–deflation mechanism.

The aim of this study was to create an overview of the Czech Armed Forces' development in approach to environmental protection from 1989 to 2022. Using the methods of analysis, synthesis and comparison of the Czech, EU´s and NATO´s environmental legislation, we created a comprehensive and previously unpublished overview of environmental protection within the Czech Armed Forces. Found outputs were set into illustrations depicting the activities in the environmental field with internal links between civil legislation, EU's requirements, and NATO's policy in chronological order. We conclude that the year 2000 represents a key milestone from which the approach to environmental protection have stagnated. Among the reasons for the stagnation, we identify commanders' concerns about "green approach" to troop training and the lack environmental education within defence department.

Objectives: To assess the current prevalence, distribution, and main clonal types of carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales (CRE) in the United Arab Emirates. Methods: A total of 504 CRE collected over a 9-month period in 15 hospitals were studied. Antibiotic susceptibility and the presence of common carbapenemase, 16S methylase, and mobile colistin resistance genes were assessed. Selected strains forming larger clusters by pulsed field gel electrophoresis were subjected to whole genome sequencing to identify their sequence types and core genome MLST. Results: Strains expressing OXA and NDM type carbapenemases and 16S methylases were present in all major hospitals. Considerable interhospital differences were noticed, suggesting the role of specific clones. A total of three major Klebsiella pneumoniae clones (CC14, ST231, and CC147) were identified, accounting for 48.6% of all CRE. All clones were significantly more resistant than sporadic isolates. CC14 strains exhibited a significant association with Emirati patients. Conclusions: Nearly half of CRE infections in the country are due to a limited number of clones. The data indicate the possibility of interhospital transmission, combined in some hospitals with inadequate stewardship practices. The study also revealed an association of the largest, most resistant clone (CC14) with Emirati patients. The specific reasons for it should be clarified by further investigations.

Ductins are a family of homologous and structurally similar membrane proteins with 2 or 4 trans-membrane alpha-helices. The active forms of the Ductins are membranous ring- or star-shaped oligomeric assemblies and they provide various pore, channel, gap-junction functions, assist in membrane fusion processes and also serve as the rotor c-ring domain of V-and F-ATPases. All functions of the Ductins have been reported to be sensitive to the presence of certain divalent metal cations (Me2+), most frequently Cu2+ or Ca2+ ions, for most of the better known members of the family, and the mechanism of this effect is not yet known. Given that we have earlier found a prominent Me2+ binding site in a well-characterised Ductin protein, we hypothesise that certain divalent cations can structurally modulate the various functions of Ductin assemblies via affecting their stability by reversible non-covalent binding to them. A fine control of the stability of the assembly ranging from separated monomers through a loosely/weakly to tightly/strongly assembled ring might render precise regulation of Ductin functions possible. The putative role of direct binding of Me2+ to the c-ring subunit of active ATP hydrolase in autophagy and the mechanism of Ca2+-dependent formation of the mitochondrial permeability transition pore are also discussed.

Abstract Introduction Individuals with opioid use disorder (OUD) who smoke cigarettes have high tobacco-related comorbidities, lack of access to tobacco treatment, lack of inclusion in smoking cessation trials, and remain understudied in the mobile health field. The purpose of this study was to understand patients’ with OUD perceptions of 1) text message programs to promote smoking cessation, 2) content and features to include in such a program, and 3) how message content should be framed. Methods From December 2018 to February 2019, we recruited 20 hospitalized individuals with a concurrent diagnosis of OUD and tobacco dependence at Boston Medical Center (BMC), the largest safety-net hospital in New England. We surveyed participants’ cell phone use, their interest in a text message program to promote smoking cessation, and their reactions to and ratings of a series of 26 prototype texts. We then conducted open-ended interviews to elicit content and suggestions on how text message interventions can improve motivation to increase smoking cessation among individuals with OUD. The interviews also included open-ended inquiries exploring message ratings and message content, inquiries about preferences for message duration, frequency, and personalization. Results Quantitative analysis of questionnaire data indicated that the majority of participants owned a cell phone (95%, 19/20). Most participants (60%, 12/20) reported that they would be interested or very interested in receiving text messages about smoking cessation. Text messages about the health benefits of quitting were rated the highest among various categories of text messages. Qualitative analysis showed that almost every participant felt that text messages would help motivate smoking cessation given the support it would provide. Conclusions This study demonstrates that individuals with OUD who smoke cigarettes perceive that a text message program designed to promote smoking cessation would motivate and support smoking cessation efforts. Our findings demonstrate that such a program is feasible as participants own cell phones, frequently send and receive text messages, and have unlimited text message plans. Findings from this study provide valuable insight into content and features to include when developing text message programs to address barriers to smoking cessation in individuals who have OUD and smoke cigarettes.

Innate immune signaling in adipocytes affects systemic metabolism. Cytosolic nucleic acid sensing has been recently shown to stimulate thermogenic adipocyte differentiation and protect from obesity; however, DNA efflux from adipocyte mitochondria is a potential proinflammatory signal that causes adipose tissue dysfunction and insulin resistance. Cytosolic DNA activates the stimulator of interferon response genes (STING), a key signal transducer which triggers type I interferon (IFN-I) expression; hence, STING activation is expected to induce IFN-I response and adipocyte dysfunction. However, we show herein that mouse adipocytes had a diminished IFN-I response to STING stimulation by 2′3′-cyclic-GMP-AMP (cGAMP). We also show that cGAMP triggered autophagy in murine and human adipocytes. In turn, STING inhibition reduced autophagosome number, compromised the mitochondrial network and caused inflammation and fat accumulation in adipocytes. STING hence stimulates a process that removes damaged mitochondria, thereby protecting adipocytes from an excessive IFN-I response to mitochondrial DNA efflux. In summary, STING appears to limit inflammation in adipocytes by promoting mitophagy under non-obesogenic conditions.

The accumulation of proteins in filter membranes limits the efficiency of filtering technologies for cleaning wastewater. Efforts are ongoing to coat commercial filters with different materials (such as titanium dioxide, TiO2) to reduce the fouling of the membrane. Beyond monitoring the desired effect of the retention of biomolecules, it is necessary to understand what the biophysical changes are in water-soluble proteins caused by their interaction with the new coated filter membranes, an aspect that has received little attention so far. Using spin-label electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), aided with native fluorescence spectroscopy and dynamic light scattering (DLS), here, we report the changes in the structure and dynamics of bovine serum albumin (BSA) exposed to TiO2 (P25) nanoparticles or passing through commercial polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membranes coated with the same nanoparticles. We have found that the filtering process and prolonged exposure to TiO2 nanoparticles had significant effects on different regions of BSA, and denaturation of the protein was not observed, neither with the TiO2 nanoparticles nor when passing through the TiO2-coated filter membranes.

Objectives: Our aim was to assess the susceptibility of carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales (CRE) from the Arabian Peninsula to a broad spectrum of antibiotics, including fosfomycin, ceftazidime-avibactam, and aztreonam-avibactam. Methods: 1192 non-repeat CRE isolated in 2009–2017 from 33 hospitals in five countries of the Arabian Peninsula were tested. The minimum inhibitory concentration of 14 antibiotics was determined. Carbapenemase and 16S methylase genes were detected by PCR. Clonality was assessed by PFGE. Results: The highest rate of susceptibility was detected to aztreonam-avibactam (95.5%) followed by colistin (79.8%), fosfomycin (71.8%) and tigecycline (59.9%). Isolates co-producing two carbapenemases (12.4%) were the least susceptible. Aminoglycoside susceptibility was affected by the frequent production of a 16S methylase. Susceptibility to ceftazidime-avibactam was impacted by the high rate of metallo-beta-lactamase producers (46.3%), while aztreonam-avibactam resistance occurred mostly in clonally unrelated, carbapenemase non-producing Escherichia coli. Conclusion: Of the currently available drugs: colistin, tigecycline, and ceftazidime-avibactam co-administered with aztreonam appear to be the most effective to treat CRE infections. However, the presence of non-clonal CRE isolates, in which avibactam does not lower the aztreonam MIC below the clinical breakpoint, is of notable concern. Based on the relatively high rate of fosfomycin susceptibility, it would be desirable to license parenteral fosfomycin in the region.

Cytochrome b561 proteins (CYB561s) are integral membrane proteins with six trans-membrane domains, two heme-b redox centers, one on each side of the host membrane. The major characteristics of these proteins are their ascorbate reducibility and trans-membrane electron transferring capability. More than one CYB561 can be found in a wide range of animal and plant phyla and they are localized in membranes different from the membranes participating in bioenergization. Two homologous proteins, both in humans and rodents, are thought to participate—via yet unidentified way—in cancer pathology. The recombinant forms of the human tumor suppressor 101F6 protein (Hs_CYB561D2) and its mouse ortholog (Mm_CYB561D2) have already been studied in some detail. However, nothing has yet been published about the physical-chemical properties of their homologues (Hs_CYB561D1 in humans and Mm_CYB561D1 in mice). In this paper we present optical, redox and structural properties of the recombinant Mm_CYB561D1, obtained based on various spectroscopic methods and homology modeling. The results are discussed in comparison to similar properties of the other members of the CYB561 protein family.

The effect of an oscillating electric field generated from music on yeast vacuolar proton-ATPase (V-ATPase) activity in its native environment is reported. An oscillating electric field is generated by electrodes that are immersed into a dispersion of yeast vacuolar membrane vesicles natively hosting a high concentration of active V-ATPase. The substantial difference in the ATP hydrolysing activity of V-ATPase under the most stimulating and inhibiting music is unprecedented. Since the topic, i.e., an effect of music on biomolecules, is very attractive for non-scientific, esoteric mystification, we provide a rational explanation for the observed new phenomenon. Good correlation is found between changes in the specific activity of the enzyme and the combined intensity of certain frequency bands of the Fourier spectra of the music clips. Most prominent identified frequencies are harmonically related to each other and to the estimated rotation rate of the enzyme. These results lead to the conclusion that the oscillating electric field interferes with periodic trans-membrane charge motions in the working enzyme.

Recent studies showed that the current endemic of carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales (CRE) in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi is dominated by highly resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae clones ST14, ST231, and CC147, respectively. In the absence of continuous, molecular typing-based surveillance, it remained unknown whether they lately emerged and rapidly became dominant, or they had been present from the early years of the endemic. Therefore, antibiotic resistance, the presence of carbapenemase and 16S methylase genes, and the sequence types of CRE strains collected between 2009 and 2015 were compared with those collected between 2018 and 2019. It was found that members of these three clones, particularly those of the most prevalent ST14, started dominating already in the very early years of the CRE outbreak. Furthermore, while severely impacting the overall antibiotic resistance patterns, the effect of these clones was not exclusive: for example, increasing trends of colistin or decreasing rates of tigecycline resistance were also observed among nonclonal isolates. The gradually increasing prevalence of few major, currently dominating clones raises the possibility that timely, systematic, molecular typing-based surveillance could have provided tools to public health authorities for an early interference with the escalation of the local CRE epidemic.

Our research focuses on investment initiatives. The perceived risks are analysed from the consumer’s viewpoint, i.e., the client’s perspective, from the standpoint of the project. In the literature, there are several risk interpretations and classifications. We assumed it could be interesting and valuable to approach investment projects from a consumer-oriented viewpoint, considering that the perceived and consumer-identified set of risks is a major determinant of the outcome of a decision. In addition to relevant secondary sources, we also present partial results of our primary research project. A pre-tested, standardised online questionnaire was employed in the primary study, using a snowball sampling approach generating 1545 evaluable questionnaires. As a result of the research, we were able to segment the customer (investor) target groups into various categories depending on the perceived project risk. We have established the orientation directions along which these segments may well be meaningfully described in terms of perceived investment risk concerns and socio-demographic characteristics that influence cluster membership. In our opinion, the findings may be a useful source of information for investment project developers looking to identify consumer groups based on risk perception and build project solutions for them.

The question of monetary integration was part of discussions on European integration from the beginning, in Hungary. That applied to Euro as well, and there was no question that it is part of our integration project. We have different waves of discussions, but there was an overwhelming support of the project from great number of the experts. The discussi-ons were professional, less politicized and divided compared to Poland or Czech Republic, and several high quality studies were published on the issue. The discussions intensified again last year and early this year and several studies and articles were published. Among them, the initiative of Hungarian Nation Bank (HNB) on Maastricht22, and the dispute between the Hungarian Minister of Finances (Mihály Varga) and the president of HNB (György Matolcsy) got particular attention. I refer to two articles of the Journal of Coun-terbalanace (Egyensúly), one from Bod Péter Ákos ((former President of the Hungarian National Bank) and István Dobozi (Former Lead Economist at the World Bank). This ar-ticle refers and reflects on the main points of these discussions.

Az euróválság fő oka: az euró hibás konstrukciója és a nemzeti politikák kudarca. Görögország a válság, s benne a szuverénadósság-válság legnagyobb vesztese. A válságot társadalmi és morális tényezők súlyosbítják (adóelkerülés). Külön tényező a görög gazdaság alacsony integráltsági szintje. A pénzpiac az előzetes feltételezésekkel ellentétben nem fegyelmez, sőt csábít, majd utólag kíméletlenül büntet. A választás, hogy az olcsó pénzből egy ország rekonstruál és javítja a versenyképességét vagy politikai célból szavazatokat vásárol, nemzeti döntés. A mentőcsomag kritikus elemei deflációs megszorítások, amelyek késleltetik a kilábalást. 2015 elején talán lehetett volna olyan megoldásokat találni, hogy a görög kormány úgy köt kompromisszumot a hitelezőivel és eurózónabeli partnereivel, hogy a válság szélesebb európai megoldása irányában is sikerül előrelépni (adósságmérséklés), s közben választói várakozásait sem kell figyelmen kívül hagynia. A görög kormány nem ezt, hanem egy konfrontatív, külön nemzeti, görög megoldást választott. Ezzel otthon képes volt a népszerűségét fenntartani, de valamennyi partnerét magára haragította. A kompromiszszum így csak elhalasztotta a tényleges megoldást. A grexit továbbra sem zárható ki, de nem érdeke senkinek.

Az euró válságának szélesebb globális összefüggései vannak, mind a kiváltó okait, mind a nemzetközi pénzügyi rendszer működésének hiányosságait illetően. Az európai monetáris integráció szilárd reálgazdasági alapokon nyugszik. Az euró teljesítménye mind az árstabilitás, mind az árfolyamok ingadozása tekintetében megfelelőnek tekinthető. Az euróválság szuverénadósság-válság, és leginkább a zóna egyes (déli) országait érinti. Az euróválság okai többrétűek: ezek között az eurózóna hibás konstrukcióját, téves koncepcionális feltételezéseit, a politikai kompromisszumokkal folyamatosan megnyomorított működését említhetjük leginkább. A közös pénz önmagában nem oka a válságnak és nem is bűvös ellenszer. A hibás gazdaságpolitikáért belül ugyanúgy bűnhődni kell, mint kívül. Görögország, vagy Írország elsősorban nem azért került válságba, mert tagjai az eurózónának, hanem mert hibás gazdaságpolitikát folytattak. Nem zárható ki az eurózóna szétesése, de kicsi az esélye.

Többször felmerült már az az elképzelés, hogy a Világgazdasági Tanszék, amely a Budapesti Corvinus Egyetemen jelenleg a Közgazdaságtudományi Karhoz tartozik, átkerüljön a Társadalomtudományi Karra. Bármilyen, erre vonatkozó döntés csak hosszú és megfontolt gondolkodás után születhet, és ehhez a folyamathoz szeretne a Köz-Gazdaság hozzájárulni. Felkértük a tanszék három akadémikus professzorát, Palánkai Tibort, Simai Mihályt, és Szentes Tamást, hogy fejtsék ki véleményüket.

A jelentés nem jöhetett volna soha jobbkor. A felkérés még 2008 februárjában történik. Akkor, amikor sok szakértő azt nyilatkozza, hogy a válságot Európa meg fogja úszni. Valószínűleg a megbízó, Nicolas Sárközy francia elnök sem előrelátóbb, de ösztönösen ráérez a problémára és a lehetőségre. Vagy okos tanácsadói javasolják. A válság mindenesetre még egyértelműbbé teszi, hogy statisztikai rendszerünk több szempontból is tökéletlen. Rajtuk kívül még 21 közismert szakértő vesz részt a munkában, főként amerikai és francia egyetemekről. A jelentést 2009. szeptember 14-én mutatják be egész napos konferencia keretében a Sorbonne egyetem aulájában.

Az integrációt, mint folyamatot, valamint állapotot (integráltság), az integráció „intenzitását” az irodalomban nagyszámú mutatóval mérik. A mérési kísérletek a globális és regionális integrációk feltérképezésére és elemzésére egyaránt kiterjednek. A mérés kérdésének különös jelentősége van a gazdaságpolitikai kihívások és a hatékony válaszok kidolgozása szempontjából.

When analysing the impacts of EU membership on NMCs, and in particular on the Hungarian economy, we consider integration maturity as a theoretical framework. Integration maturity can be defined as a capability to exploit the benefits of the given form of integration to the maximum, while the costs and drawbacks can be minimised. Integration maturity can be measured by comparing costs and benefits. A country is mature for integration if membership on the whole is advantageous for it.

The European Studies and Education Centre of Corvinus University and the Hungarian European Community Studies Association organised a Conference on 5–6 March 2010 on the theme of “Evaluation of EU membership of New Member States”. The Conference tried to draw the balance of cost and benefits of EU membership in the framework of analysing integration-maturity.

Excess light causes damage to the photosynthetic apparatus of plants and algae primarily via reactive oxygen species. Singlet oxygen can be formed by interaction of chlorophyll (Chl) triplet states, especially in the Photosystem II reaction center, with oxygen. Whether Chls in the light-harvesting antenna complexes play direct role in oxidative photodamage is less clear. In this work, light-induced photobleaching of Chls in the major trimeric light-harvesting complex II (LHCII) is investigated in different molecular environments – protein aggregates, embedded in detergent micelles or in reconstituted membranes (proteoliposomes). The effects of intense light treatment were analyzed by absorption and circular dichroism spectroscopy, steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence and EPR spectroscopy. The rate and quantum yield of photobleaching was estimated from the light-induced Chl absorption changes. Photobleaching occurred mainly in Chl a and was accompanied by strong fluorescence quenching of the remaining unbleached Chls. The rate of photobleaching increased by 140% when LHCII was embedded in lipid membranes, compared to detergent-solubilized LHCII. Removing oxygen from the medium or adding antioxidants largely suppressed the bleaching, confirming its oxidative mechanism. Singlet oxygen formation was monitored by EPR spectroscopy using spin traps and spin labels to detect singlet oxygen directly and indirectly, respectively. The quantum yield of Chl a photobleaching in membranes and detergent was found to be 3.4 × 10–5 and 1.4 × 10–5, respectively. These values compare well with the yields of ROS production estimated from spin-trap EPR spectroscopy (around 4 × 10–5 and 2 × 10–5). A kinetic model is proposed, quantifying the generation of Chl and carotenoid triplet states and singlet oxygen. The high quantum yield of photobleaching, especially in the lipid membrane, suggest that direct photodamage of the antenna occurs with rates relevant to photoinhibition in vivo. The results represent further evidence that the molecular environment of LHCII has profound impact on its functional characteristics, including, among others, the susceptibility to photodamage.

Cikkünkben röviden bemutatjuk a piac egyik vezető járműszimulációs szoftverének használatát, az AVL Cruise M-et.

In most cases, when creating vehicle dynamics simulations, we need software that can speed up model creation and simulation. There are many programs on the market for this purpose, but they have different knowledge and user interfaces. We present in this article briefly introduces the use of one of the market's leading vehicle simulation software, the AVL Cruise M.

The EU integration is in deadlock. We face several crises, like growth, regulation, climate, migration or cohesion. The measures of Euro governance consolidated the single currency, but the long-term stabilisation calls for the solution of the debt crisis or creation of a real community budget. At the moment, the EU has no agenda for any qualitative progress of its integration program, which would go beyond the present constructions. The popular support for any such program is just contradictory. It is an important development that in the integration processes the role of the nation has increased. [Palankai, 2018 and 2019] Instead of neo-functionalist spillover, we face the possibility of a post-functionalist backlash. All these make constructive reforms more than urgent and complex.

Data on the prevalence of MCR-producing Enterobacterales of animal origin are scarce from the Arabian Peninsula. We investigated the presence and variety of such strains from fecal specimens of poultry collected in four farms in the United Arab Emirates. Colonies from ten composite samples per farm grown on colistin-supplemented plates were PCR-screened for alleles of the mcr gene. Thirty-nine isolates selected based on species, colony morphology, and plasmid profile were subjected to whole genome sequencing. The panel of their resistance and virulence genes, MLST and cgMLST were established. Transferability and incompatibility types of the MCR-plasmids were determined. mcr-1.1 positive strains were identified in 36 of the 40 samples. Thirty-four multi-drug resistant Escherichia coli of 16 different sequence types, two Escherichia albertii, two Klebsiella pneumoniae and one Salmonella minnesota were identified. Beyond various aminoglycoside, tetracycline, and co-trimoxazole resistance genes, seven of them also carried ESBL genes and one blaCMY-2. Six IncHI2, 26 IncI2 and 4 IncX4 MCR-plasmids were mobilized, in case of the IncHI2 plasmids co-transferring ampicillin, chloramphenicol and tetracycline resistance. The diversity of mcr-1 positive strains suggest a complex local epidemiology calling for a coordinated surveillance including animals, retail meat and clinical cases.

Autophagy, the process of cellular self-degradation, is intrinsically tied to the degradative function of the lysosome. Several diseases have been linked to lysosomal degradative defects, including rare lysosomal storage disorders and neurodegenerative diseases. Ion channels and pumps play a major regulatory role in autophagy. Importantly, calcium signaling produced by TRPML1 (transient receptor potential cation channel, mucolipin subfamily) has been shown to regulate autophagic progression through biogenesis of autophagic-lysosomal organelles, activation of mTORC1 (mechanistic target of rapamycin complex 1) and degradation of autophagic cargo. ER calcium channels such as IP3Rs supply calcium for the lysosome, and lysosomal function is severely disrupted in the absence of lysosomal calcium replenishment by the ER. TRPML1 function is also regulated by LC3 (microtubule-associated protein light chain 3) and mTORC1, two critical components of the autophagic network. Here we provide an overview of the current knowledge about ion channels and pumps—including lysosomal V-ATPase (vacuolar proton-ATPase), which is required for acidification and hence proper enzymatic activity of lysosomal hydrolases—in the regulation of autophagy, and discuss how functional impairment of some of these leads to diseases.

Nanosized drug delivery systems targeting transporters of the blood-brain barrier (BBB) are promising carriers to enhance the penetration of therapeutics into the brain. The expression of solute carriers (SLC) is high and shows a specific pattern at the BBB. Here we show that targeting ligands ascorbic acid, leucine and glutathione on nanoparticles elevated the uptake of albumin cargo in cultured primary rat brain endothelial cells. Moreover, we demonstrated the ability of the triple-targeted nanovesicles to deliver their cargo into midbrain organoids after crossing the BBB model. The cellular uptake was temperature- and energy-dependent based on metabolic inhibition. The process was decreased by filipin and cytochalasin D, indicating that the cellular uptake of nanoparticles was partially mediated by endocytosis. The uptake of the cargo encapsulated in triple-targeted nanoparticles increased after modification of the negative zeta potential of endothelial cells by treatment with a cationic lipid or after cleaving the glycocalyx with an enzyme. We revealed that targeted nanoparticles elevated plasma membrane fluidity, indicating the fusion of nanovesicles with endothelial cell membranes. Our data indicate that labeling nanoparticles with three different ligands of multiple transporters of brain endothelial cells can promote the transfer and delivery of molecules across the BBB.

The paper deals with the ability of engineer units to provide engineer mobility support in combat operations. Based on the analysis of the results of structured interviews conducted with extensive amount of ACR officers, and their generalization, were found discrepancies between the current and required state in the organizational structure of engineer units to provide effective mobility support, and requirements for engineer devices to support mobility in ACR conditions were formulated. The aim of this article is to present recommendations for inclusion of different types of engineer devices into formed engineer formations for mobility support in relation to the tasks performed within engineer role of mobility support and determine recommendations for the further direction of research in this area.

This paper is about the role and the future of the nation. They are analysed in the context of current development of international integration. The starting point is theoretical, which is based on the proposal of a more comprehensive, extended and organic version of integration theory than that suggested by mainstream schools. It considers international integration as a complex and multi-dimensional process, which is composed primarily of the global and interstate regional integrations (e.g., EU and ASEAN). The national-level integrations remain the basic components of the process.

The focus of this study is to examine the investment project process. Since investment can also be considered as economic interactions, certain risks are associated with their implementation. Risk factors were given a particular priority during the secondary and primary research, while determining the most relevant risk factors of investment project processes in relation to the B2B market. The risk map for investment project processes was created in line with the relevant secondary sources, qualitative and quantitative primary results. This is topical because the importance of investments is unquestionable in a market economy. Therefore, a comprehensive risk assessment might provide results that are useful for both supply and demand side actors in B2B market relations. Based on the results of the primary study, the perceived risks of the project process were defined, and they were structured into a risk hierarchy system. Based on the qualitative results, we performed a quantitative study. Based on the responses of the sample subjects, we determined the perceived risk factors, and on the basis of them, we segmented the service provider (contractor) market. The main socio-demographic characteristics of each segment were also explored in the framework of the research.

According to the OECD, 4% to 10% of the global corporate income tax revenue, i.e. USD 100 to 240 billion annually, is lost due to corporate income tax avoidance (OECD, 2015). Although the existence of the issue is well-accepted by the tax policy makers of the developed world, it is extremely difficult to agree on an international tax policy standard which could reduce the vulnerability of the sovereign tax regimes. In this article, we summarize the historical background of corporate income tax avoidance, and provide evidence of its existence in the EU member states. In addition, we also examine a new international income tax model proposed by the European Commission and analyse the expected effects of the proposal onthe risk associated with tax avoidance in Europe.

Present Hungarian elite was born from process of transformation after 1990. Hungarian economy has become one of the most globalised economies of the world, and integrated to Europe. In business elite two generations are distinguished. The older generation was already in manager or owner position before the system changed, but they did not come from Communist political nomenclature. The second generation finished their university studies in the late 1980s, without any initial capita, and their emergence showed greater similarities to Western contemporaries. Others are present managers and technocrats of big companies (TNCs and national as well), bankers and also from SMEs. The main group is from the political and public administration bureaucracy, who is in important positions at ministries, local authorities or at European institutions. The Hungarian elite is Europeanised, but divided, because some part, particularly national companies and SMEs are negatively affected by process of European integration.

To establish the role of local transmission versus possible pathogen import due to previous foreign exposure in infections caused by carbapenem non-susceptible Enterobacteriaceae in the Arabian Peninsula, 200 independent isolates collected in 16 hospitals of Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Oman and the United Arab Emirates were studied. All strains were multidrug resistant; 42.5% of them also qualified as extremely drug resistant. The frequency of various carbapenemases varied according to the participating countries, but in the collection, as a whole, blaNDM-1 was the most frequently encountered carbapenemase gene (46.5%) followed by blaOXA-48-like gene (32.5%). A comparatively high rate (8.9%) of multi-clonal strains carrying both blaNDM and blaOXA-48-like genes in the United Arab Emirates, representing the most resistant subgroup, was encountered. No KPC-expressing isolates were detected. Three major clones of blaNDM-1 carrying Klebsiella pneumoniae of ST152 (n = 22, Saudi Arabia), ST14 (n = 7, United Arab Emirates) and ST147 types (n = 9, Oman) were identified, the latter two clones carrying similar, but not identical HI1b incompatibility type plasmids of >170 kb. While from 78.6% of the cases with documented foreign hospitalization blaNDM positive strains were isolated, these strains formed only 25.6% of all the isolates expressing this enzyme. In fact, 56.8% of the NDM, 75.7% of OXA-48-like and 90.9% of VIM positive strains were recovered from patients without documented foreign exposure, neither in the form of travel or prior hospitalization abroad, suggesting a high rate of autochthonous infections. This, considering the extensive links of these countries to the rest of the world, predicts that trends in the local epidemiology of carbapenem resistant strains may increasingly affect the spread of these pathogens on the global scale. These results call for improved surveillance of carbapenem resistant Enterobacteriaceae in the countries of the Arabian Peninsula.
