Abstract

Highly dynamic computing environments, like ubiquitous and pervasive computing environments, require frequent adaptation of applications. Context is a key to adapt suiting user needs. On the other hand, standard access control trusts users once they have authenticated, despite the fact that they may reach unauthorized contexts. We analyse how taking into account dynamic information like context in the authorization subsystem can improve security, and how this new access control applies to interaction patterns, like messaging or eventing. We experiment and validate our approach using context as an authorization factor for eventing in Web service for device (like UPnP or DPWS), in smart home security.

Abstract

Pervasive computing appears like a new computing era based on networks of objects and devices evolving in a real world, radically different from distributed computing, based on networks of computers and data storages. Contrary to most context-aware approaches, we work on the assumption that pervasive software must be able to deal with a dynamic software environment before processing contextual data. After demonstrating that SOA (Service oriented Architecture) and its numerous principles are well adapted for pervasive computing, we present our extended SOA model for pervasive computing, called Service Lightweight Component Architecture (SLCA). SLCA presents various additional principles to meet completely pervasive software constraints: software infrastructure based on services for devices, local orchestrations based on lightweight component architecture and finally encapsulation of those orchestrations into composite services to address distributed composition of services. We present a sample application of the overall approach as well as some relevant measures about SLCA performances.

Abstract

From a closed and controlled environment, neglecting all the external disturbances, information processing systems are now exposed to the complexity and the aleas of the physical environment, open and uncontrolled. Indeed, as envisioned by Mark Weiser as early as 1991, the progresses made on wireless communications, energy storage and the miniaturization of computer components, made it possible the fusion of the physical and digital worlds. This fusion is embodied in a set of concepts such as Internet of Things, Pervasive Computing, Ubiquitous Computing, etc. From a synthesis of these different concepts, we show that beyond the simple collection of environmental data from sensors, the purpose of the information processing systems underlying these concepts is to carry out relevant actions that the processing of these data suggests in our environment. However, due to the complexity of these systems and the inability to predict the effects of their actions, the responsibility for these actions still often remains with users. Mark Weiser's vision of disappearing computing is still far from being a reality. This situation calls for an epistemological rupture that is proposed to be concretized through the systemic approach which finds its foundations in constructivism. It is no longer a question of predicting but of evaluating in vivo the effectiveness of these systems. The perspectives for such an approach are discussed.

4. Effectiveness Assessment of Cyber-Physical Systems

Abstract

By achieving their purposes through interactions with the physical world, Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) pose new challenges in terms of dependability. Indeed, the evolution of the physical systems they control with transducers can be affected by surrounding physical processes over which they have no control and which may potentially hamper the achievement of their purposes. While it is illusory to hope for a comprehensive model of the physical environment at design time to anticipate and remove faults that may occur once these systems are deployed, it becomes necessary to evaluate their degree of effectiveness in vivo. In this paper, the degree of effectiveness is formally defined and generalized in the context of the measure theory. The measure is developed in the context of the Transferable Belief Model (TBM), an elaboration on the Dempster-Shafer Theory (DST) of evidence so as to handle epistemic and aleatory uncertainties respectively pertaining the users' expectations and the natural variability of the physical environment. The TBM is used in conjunction with the Input/Output Hidden Markov Modeling framework (we denote by Ev-IOHMM) to specify the expected evolution of the physical system controlled by the CPS and the tolerances towards uncertainties. The measure of effectiveness is then obtained from the forward algorithm, leveraging the conflict entailed by the successive combinations of the beliefs obtained from observations of the physical system and the beliefs corresponding to its expected evolution. The proposed approach is applied to autonomous vehicles and show how the degree of effectiveness can be used for bench-marking their controller relative to the highway code speed limitations and passengers' well-being constraints, both modeled through an Ev-IOHMM., Comment: Preprint submitted to International Journal of Approximate Reasoning

Abstract

One of the fundamental aspects of ubiquitous computing is the instrumentation of the real world by smart devices. This instrumentation constitutes an opportunity to rethink the interactions between human beings and their environment on the one hand, and between the components of this environment on the other. In this paper we discuss what this understanding of ubiquitous computing can bring to geographic science and particularly to GIS technology. Our main idea is the instrumentation of the geographic environment through the instrumentation of geographic objects composing it. Abstract

Highly dynamic computing environments, like ubiquitous and pervasive computing environments, require frequent adaptation of applications. This has to be done in a timely fashion, and the adaptation process must be as fast as possible and mastered. Moreover the adaptation process has to ensure a consistent result when finished whereas adaptations to be implemented cannot be anticipated at design time. In this paper we present our mechanism for self-adaptation based on the aspect oriented programming paradigm called Aspect of Assembly (AAs). Abstract

The design and implementation of a mobile-robot system architecture is discussed. The architecture consists of a feature extraction module, an action unit and a blackboard system controller for strategic and reactive reasoning. The blackboard system consists of two hierarchical layers, namely a database to monitor the robot's environment and a set of activities for real-time navigation. It was implemented using a Cybermotion platform, 24 ultrasound sensors and two laser range finders.

Abstract

International audience; Nowadays, many works are interested in adapting to the context without taking into account neither the responsiveness to adapt their solution, nor the ability of designers to model all the relevant concerns. Our paper provides a new architecture for context management that tries to solve both problems. This approach is also based on the analysis and synthesis of context-aware frameworks proposed in literature. Our solution is focus on a separation of contextual concerns at the design phase and preserves it as much as possible at runtime. For this, we introduce the notion of independent views that allow designers to focus on their domain of expertise. At runtime, the architecture is splitted in 2 independent levels of adaptation. The highest is in charge of current context identification and manages each view independently. The lowest handles the adaptation of the application according to the rules granted by the previous level.

Abstract

International audience; Un grand nombre de recherches existent pour la reconnaissance d'activité humaine. Cependant, la plupart d'entre elles utilisent un ensemble statique et immuable de capteurs connus par avance. Cette approche ne fonctionne pas lorsqu'elle est appliquée à un système ubiquitaire, car nous ne connaissons alors pas par avance quels capteurs seront disponibles dans l'environnement de l'utilisateur. C'est pourquoi nous considérons ici une approche opportuniste où chaque capteur est entrainé individuellement et capable d'apporter sa propre connaissance. Nous considérons toutes les étapes de la chaîne de reconnaissance d'activité et nous montrons comment ce processus peut être amélioré à chacune de ces étapes. Plus précisément, nous prenons en compte les étapes telles que le prétraitement, la segmentation, l'extraction de caractéristiques et l'apprentissage. Nous proposons également d'évaluer à la fois l'efficacité des Random Forests (RF) pour entrainer des capteurs et la robustesse de la fusion des résultats basée sur le vote à la majorité en comparant les résultats obtenus à ceux du projet Opportunity. Nous montrons ainsi que les RF donnent de meilleurs résultats plus robustes que les algorithmes d'apprentissage testés par Opportunity.

Abstract

International audience; The Internet of Things (IoT) connects sensors, actuators and autonomous objects interacting with each other. These devices are represented by web services. Web services composition often involves conflicts between systems having access to shared devices. In our component-based middleware, our solution allows managing access to shared devices, by generating specific constraint components which guarantee the respect of some predefined composition and adaptation constraints. IoT environments are dynamic; our solution ensures adaptation to its changes by using new generated constraint components and inhibitors to deal with the appearance and disappearance of devices/applications. The main contribution in this work is the definition of a new language DCL (Description Constraint Language) that helps to generate our constraint components by describing generic constraints that must be verified on accesses to shared devices. The whole approach and its associated tools rely on the synchronous paradigm, since it has a well-established formal foundation allowing automatic proofs, and interface with most model-checkers. We can then prove and guarantee a safe composition at runtime for our IoT applications.; L'internet des objets connecte des capteurs, des actuateurs et des objets autonomes interagissant les uns avec les autres. Ces dispositifs sont représentés par des services web. La composition des services web doit souvent faire face à des des conflits entre les systèmes ayant accès à des dispositifs partagés. Dans notre intergiciel basé sur une approche composant, notre solution résoud le problème d'accès aux dispositifs partagés en générant des composants spécifiques qui garantissent le respect de contraintes prédéfinies d'adaptation et de composition. L'environnement de l'Internet des choses est dynamique; notre solution assure l'adaptation aux changements en utilisant de nouveaux composants de contrainte et des inhibiteurs qui permettent de prendre en compte l'apparence et la disparition des dispositifs et des applications. La principale contribution de ce travail est la définition du langage DCL (Description Contrainte Language) qui permet de générer automatiquement des composants de contrainte par description de contraintes génériques qui doivent être vérifiées sur les accès aux dispositifs partagés. Notre approche et les outils qui en découle repose sur le paradigme synchrone car c'est un modèle bien fondé qui permet de faire des preuves automatiques et s'interface avec la plupart des model checkers. Nous pouvons ainsi prouver et garantir une composition sure de nos applications dans le domaine de l'internet des choses.

Abstract

International audience; The development of smart spaces is a complex and challenging task. The choice of suitable sensors and actuators to deploy in these physical testbeds is difficult without experimentation. Moreover, several challenges still remain in improving and testing new fields of application based on Web of Things (WoT). In this paper, we present UbiUnity, a dynamic visual simulator environment which can be used during the design phase of smart spaces. Our approach allows to define web services for devices (WSD) associated to 3D virtual shape in the simulated environment. These WSD are defined by combining simple actions in the virtual environment allowing the researchers to focus on the definition of new algorithms or middleware to manage the smart space. Moreover, UbiUnity can dynamically create these WSD during the execution of the simulation with respect to the fluidity of the graphics rendering.

Abstract

The last decade achievements in computer hardware miniaturization and power consumption reduction has permitted the multiplication of connected devices integrated in everyday life physical objects (chair, table, lamp, etc…) and physical environments (house, building, vehicle, etc…). These devices implement resources interacting with objects (actuator) and/or gathering data (sensor) about themselves, the objects or the environment. Access to these resources is achieved through services exposing their interfaces and allowing communication with the digital world. Widely deployed in so called ambient environments, these devices and services are selected by ambient applications (service matchmaking) that make them work in concert to assist users in several distinct domains (healthcare, smart houses, etc…). This cooperation requires a strong interoperability between devices, firstly achieved by allowing them to communicate. Although work on communication protocols (IoT, Internet of Things) tries to provide a solution to the technological heterogeneity issue, it is still challenging due to the large number of initiatives in this field. Among all the possible solutions, web-services based approach (WoT, Web of Things) is now widely accepted.With this hypothesis, and going a step further, the purpose of the present document is to address the semantic heterogeneity issue inherent to the large number of heterogeneous devices and services present in the environment targeting multiple domains (smart homes, smart cities, building automation, healthcare, etc…). This heterogeneity is problematic for ambient applications to select, among all the available devices and services, the most relevant ones. We investigate in this document how semantic web technologies can be leveraged to enrich devices and services with semantic annotations used to qualify it (SWoT, Semantic Web of Things) and help applications selection mechanism to increase the relevancy of the selected devices and services.
