The article argues that a new research program is emerging, one that shifts the focus from the quests for the 'historical Jesus,' a person in the past, to recovering the 'historic Jesus,' the person remembered by his followers. It finds that Jesus' historic significance is and should be the center of Jesus research. It argues that the works of Elisabeth Schussler Fiorenza, James D. G. Dunn, and Larry Hurtado are key contributions that indicate the shape of this research program., THE THIRD QUEST for the 'Historical-Jesus' (1) has matured as a research program. This essay responds to Richard Lennan, 'Faith in Context: Rahner on the Possibility of Belief' (Philosophy & Theology 17 [2005]: 233-58). It suggests that some of the ills of religious belief in the United States were not those for which Rahner had prescriptions. The essay utilizes the fiction of Graham Greene, born in the same year as Rahner, and who had read much of Rahner's work, to mobilize a critique of Lennan's (and Rahner's) views.

A study of the development and conversion patterns of religious experience confirms that an institutional dimension is an essential part of religious experience. An institution is required to bequeath a set of beliefs, and organize a community which attempts to bequeath this set of beliefs in the absence of the founder of the community. Interpretations of religion and religious experience which overlook institutional dimensions are faulty as they overlook the means by which traditions are shaped by institutions.
