We present 850 $��$m polarimetric observations toward the Serpens Main molecular cloud obtained using the POL-2 polarimeter on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT) as part of the B-fields In STar-forming Region Observations (BISTRO) survey. These observations probe the magnetic field morphology of the Serpens Main molecular cloud on about 6000 au scales, which consists of cores and six filaments with different physical properties such as density and star formation activity. Using the histogram of relative orientation (HRO) technique, we find that magnetic fields are parallel to filaments in less dense filamentary structures where $N_{H_2} < 0.93\times 10^{22}$ cm$^{-2}$ (magnetic fields perpendicular to density gradients), while being perpendicular to filaments (magnetic fields parallel to density gradients) in dense filamentary structures with star formation activity. Moreover, applying the HRO technique to denser core regions, we find that magnetic field orientations change to become perpendicular to density gradients again at $N_{H_2} \approx 4.6 \times 10^{22}$ cm$^{-2}$. This can be interpreted as a signature of core formation. At $N_{H_2} \approx 16 \times 10^{22}$ cm$^{-2}$ magnetic fields change back to being parallel to density gradients once again, which can be understood to be due to magnetic fields being dragged in by infalling material. In addition, we estimate the magnetic field strengths of the filaments ($B_{POS} = 60-300~��$G)) using the Davis-Chandrasekhar-Fermi method and discuss whether the filaments are gravitationally unstable based on magnetic field and turbulence energy densities., 18 pages, accepted for publication in ApJ

Tao-Chung Ching et al., We present 850 μm dust polarization observations of the massive DR21 filament from the B-fields In STar-forming Region Observations (BISTRO) survey, using the POL-2 polarimeter and the SCUBA-2 camera on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope. We detect ordered magnetic fields perpendicular to the parsec-scale ridge of the DR21 main filament. In the subfilaments, the magnetic fields are mainly parallel to the filamentary structures and smoothly connect to the magnetic fields of the main filament. We compare the POL-2 and Planck dust polarization observations to study the magnetic field structures of the DR21 filament on 0.1–10 pc scales. The magnetic fields revealed in the Planck data are well-aligned with those of the POL-2 data, indicating a smooth variation of magnetic fields from large to small scales. The plane-of-sky magnetic field strengths derived from angular dispersion functions of dust polarization are 0.6–1.0 mG in the DR21 filament and ∼0.1 mG in the surrounding ambient gas. The mass-to-flux ratios are found to be magnetically supercritical in the filament and slightly subcritical to nearly critical in the ambient gas. The alignment between column density structures and magnetic fields changes from random alignment in the low-density ambient gas probed by Planck to mostly perpendicular in the high-density main filament probed by James Clerk Maxwell Telescope. Hwang et al., We present and analyze observations of polarized dust emission at 850 μm toward the central 1 × 1 pc hub-filament structure of Monoceros R2 (Mon R2). The data are obtained with SCUBA-2/POL-2 on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT) as part of the B-fields in Star-forming Region Observations survey. The orientations of the magnetic field follow the spiral structure of Mon R2, which are well described by an axisymmetric magnetic field model. We estimate the turbulent component of the magnetic field using the angle difference between our observations and the best-fit model of the underlying large-scale mean magnetic field. This estimate is used to calculate the magnetic field strength using the Davis–Chandrasekhar–Fermi method, for which we also obtain the distribution of volume density and velocity dispersion using a column density map derived from Herschel data and the C18O (J = 3 − 2) data taken with HARP on the JCMT, respectively. We make maps of magnetic field strengths and mass-to-flux ratios, finding that magnetic field strengths vary from 0.02 to 3.64 mG with a mean value of 1.0 ± 0.06 mG, and the mean critical mass-to-flux ratio is 0.47 ± 0.02. Additionally, the mean Alfvén Mach number is 0.35 ± 0.01. This suggests that, in Mon R2, the magnetic fields provide resistance against large-scale gravitational collapse, and the magnetic pressure exceeds the turbulent pressure. We also investigate the properties of each filament in Mon R2. In a continuing effort to investigate the role of magnetic fields in evolved low and intermediate mass stars (principally regarding the shaping of their envelopes), we present new ALMA high resolution polarization data obtained for the nebula OH 231.8+4.2. We found that the polarized emission likely arises from aligned grains in the presence of magnetic fields rather than radiative alignment and self scattering. The ALMA data show well organized electric field orientations in most of the nebula and the inferred magnetic field vectors (rotated by 90 degrees) trace an hourglass morphology centred on the central system of the nebula. One region in the southern part of OH 231.8+4.2 shows a less organized distribution probably due to the shocked environment. These findings, in conjunction with earlier investigations (maser studies and dust emission analysis at other scales and wavelengths) suggest an overall magnetic hourglass located inside a toroidal field. We propose the idea that the magnetic field structure is closely related to the architecture of a magnetic tower and that the outflows were therefore magnetically launched. While the current dynamical effect of the fields might be weak in the equatorial plane principally due to the evolution of the envelope, it would still be affecting the outflows. In that regard, the measurement of the magnetic field at the stellar surface, which is still missing, combined with a full MHD treatment are required to better understand and constrain the events occurring in OH 231.8+4.2., 9 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society Main Journal

We present the results of simultaneous 450 $\mu$m and 850 $\mu$m polarization observations toward the massive star forming region NGC 2071IR, a target of the BISTRO (B-fields in Star-Forming Region Observations) Survey, using the POL-2 polarimeter and SCUBA-2 camera mounted on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope. We find a pinched magnetic field morphology in the central dense core region, which could be due to a rotating toroidal disk-like structure and a bipolar outflow originating from the central young stellar object, IRS 3. Using the modified Davis-Chandrasekhar-Fermi method, we obtain a plane-of-sky magnetic field strength of 563$\pm$421 $\mu$G in the central $\sim$0.12 pc region from 850 $\mu$m polarization data. The corresponding magnetic energy density of 2.04$\times$10$^{-8}$ erg cm$^{-3}$ is comparable to the turbulent and gravitational energy densities in the region. We find that the magnetic field direction is very well aligned with the whole of the IRS 3 bipolar outflow structure. We find that the median value of polarization fractions, 3.0 \%, at 450 $\mu$m in the central 3 arcminute region, which is larger than the median value of 1.2 \% at 850 $\mu$m. The trend could be due to the better alignment of warmer dust in the strong radiation environment. We also find that polarization fractions decrease with intensity at both wavelengths, with slopes, determined by fitting a Rician noise model, of $0.59 \pm 0.03$ at 450 $\mu$m and $0.36 \pm 0.04$ at 850 $\mu$m, respectively. We think that the shallow slope at 850 $\mu$m is due to grain alignment at the center being assisted by strong radiation from the central young stellar objects., Comment: 17 pages, 11 figures, 4 tables

We have obtained sensitive dust continuum polarization observations at 850 μm in the B213 region of Taurus using POL-2 on SCUBA-2 at the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope as part of the B-fields in STar-forming Region Observations (BISTRO) survey. These observations allow us to probe magnetic field (B-field) at high spatial resolution (∼2000 au or ∼0.01 pc at 140 pc) in two protostellar cores (K04166 and K04169) and one prestellar core (Miz-8b) that lie within the B213 filament. Using the Davis–Chandrasekhar–Fermi method, we estimate the B-field strengths in K04166, K04169, and Miz-8b to be 38 ± 14, 44 ± 16, and 12 ± 5 μG, respectively. These cores show distinct mean B-field orientations. The B-field in K04166 is well ordered and aligned parallel to the orientations of the core minor axis, outflows, core rotation axis, and large-scale uniform B-field, in accordance with magnetically regulated star formation via ambipolar diffusion taking place in K04166. The B-field in K04169 is found to be ordered but oriented nearly perpendicular to the core minor axis and large-scale B-field and not well correlated with other axes. In contrast, Miz-8b exhibits a disordered B-field that shows no preferred alignment with the core minor axis or large-scale field. We found that only one core, K04166, retains a memory of the large-scale uniform B-field. The other two cores, K04169 and Miz-8b, are decoupled from the large-scale field. Such a complex B-field configuration could be caused by gas inflow onto the filament, even in the presence of a substantial magnetic flux.

We report the first high spatial resolution measurement of magnetic fields surrounding LkH$\alpha$ 101, a part of the Auriga-California molecular cloud. The observations were taken with the POL-2 polarimeter on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope within the framework of the B-fields In Star-forming Region Observations (BISTRO) survey. Observed polarization of thermal dust emission at 850 $\mu$m is found to be mostly associated with the red-shifted gas component of the cloud. The magnetic field displays a relatively complex morphology. Two variants of the Davis-Chandrasekhar-Fermi method, unsharp masking and structure function, are used to calculate the strength of magnetic fields in the plane of the sky, yielding a similar result of $B_{\rm POS}\sim 115$ $\mathrm{\mu}$G. The mass-to-magnetic-flux ratio in critical value units, $\lambda\sim0.3$, is the smallest among the values obtained for other regions surveyed by POL-2. This implies that the LkH$\alpha$ 101 region is sub-critical and the magnetic field is strong enough to prevent gravitational collapse. The inferred $\delta B/B_0\sim 0.3$ implies that the large scale component of the magnetic field dominates the turbulent one. The variation of the polarization fraction with total emission intensity can be fitted by a power-law with an index of $\alpha=0.82\pm0.03$, which lies in the range previously reported for molecular clouds. We find that the polarization fraction decreases rapidly with proximity to the only early B star (LkH$\alpha$ 101) in the region. We present new observations of the active star formation region NGC 1333 in the Perseus molecular cloud complex from the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope B -Fields In Star-forming Region Observations (BISTRO) survey with the POL-2 instrument. The BISTRO data cover the entire NGC 1333 complex (∼1.5 pc × 2 pc) at 0.02 pc resolution and spatially resolve the polarized emission from individual filamentary structures for the first time. The inferred magnetic field structure is complex as a whole, with each individual filament aligned at different position angles relative to the local field orientation. We combine the BISTRO data with low- and high- resolution data derived from Planck and interferometers to study the multiscale magnetic field structure in this region. The magnetic field morphology drastically changes below a scale of ∼1 pc and remains continuous from the scales of filaments (∼0.1 pc) to that of protostellar envelopes (∼0.005 pc or ∼1000 au). Finally, we construct simple models in which we assume that the magnetic field is always perpendicular to the long axis of the filaments. We demonstrate that the observed variation of the relative orientation between the filament axes and the magnetic field angles are well reproduced by this model, taking into account the projection effects of the magnetic field and filaments relative to the plane of the sky. [Abridged] Filaments and hubs have received special attention recently thanks to studies showing their role in star formation. While the column density and velocity structures of both filaments and hubs have been studied, their magnetic fields (B-field) are not yet characterized. We aim to understand the role of the B-field in the dynamical evolution of the NGC 6334 hub-filament network. We present new observations of the dust polarized emission at 850$\mu$m towards NGC 6334 obtained with the JCMT/POL-2. We study the distribution and dispersion of the polarized intensity ($PI$), the polarization fraction ($PF$), and the B-field angle ($\theta_{B}$). We derive the power spectrum of the intensity and $\theta_{B}$ along the ridge crest. Our analyses show a complex B-field structure when observed over the whole region ($\sim10$ pc), however, at smaller scales ($\sim1$ pc), $\theta_{B}$ varies coherently along the filaments. The observed power spectrum of $\theta_{B}$ can be well represented with a power law function with a slope $-1.33\pm0.23$, which is $\sim20\%$ shallower than that of $I$. This result is compatible with the properties of simulated filaments and may indicate the processes at play in the formation of filaments. $\theta_{B}$ rotates from being mostly perpendicular to the filament crests to mostly parallel as they merge with the hubs. This variation of $\theta_{B}$ may be tracing local velocity flows of matter in-falling onto the hubs. Our analysis suggests a variation of the energy balance along the crests of these filaments, from magnetically critical/supercritical at their far ends to magnetically subcritical near the hubs. We present medium-resolution K-band long-slit spectroscopy of 29 true, likely, possible and candidate Galactic Plane planetary nebulae (PNe) from the UWISH2 survey - many of which have only been recently discovered. These objects are bright in molecular hydrogen (H2) emission, and many have bipolar morphologies. Through the detection of the Br{\gamma} emission line, which traces ionized hydrogen, we find that the majority of the candidate PNe are indeed likely to be PNe, while 2 of the targets are more likely young stellar objects (YSOs) or pre-planetary nebulae (pPNe). We detect Br{\gamma} in 13 objects which have no detection in IPHAS or SHS H{\alpha} surveys. This implies they are potential members of the little-known optically-obscured PN population, hidden from wide-field optical surveys. We use the spatial extent of the H2 1-0 S(1) and Br{\gamma} lines to estimate the evolutionary stage of our targets, and find that W-BPNe (bipolar PNe with pinched waist morphologies) are likely to be younger objects, while R-BPNe (bipolar PNe with large ring structures) are more evolved. We use line ratios to trace the excitation mechanism of the H2, and find the 1-0 S(1) / 2-1 S(1) and 1-0 S(1) / Br{\gamma} ratios are higher for R-BPNe, implying the H2 is thermally excited. However, in W-BPNe, these ratios are lower, and so UV-fluorescence may be contributing to the excitation of H2., Comment: 17 pages, 4 figures, accepted for MNRAS

Near-infrared imaging in the 1 - 0 S(1) emission line of molecular hydrogen is able to detect planetary nebulae (PNe) that are hidden from optical emission line surveys. We present images of 307 objects from the UWISH2 survey of the northern Galactic Plane, and with the aid of mid-infrared colour diagnostics draw up a list of 291 PN candidates. The majority, 183, are new detections and 85 per cent of these are not present in H$\alpha$ surveys of the region. We find that more than half (54 per cent) of objects have a bipolar morphology and that some objects previously considered as elliptical or point-source in H$\alpha$ imaging, appear bipolar in UWISH2 images. By considering a small subset of objects for which physical radii are available from the H$\alpha$ surface brightness-radius relation, we find evidence that the H2 surface brightness remains roughly constant over a factor 20 range of radii from 0.03 to 0.6 pc, encompassing most of the visible lifetime of a PN. This leads to the H$\alpha$ surface brightness becoming comparable to that of H2 at large radius (> 0:5 pc). By combining the number of UWISH2 PNe without H$\alpha$ detection with an estimate of the PN detection efficiency in H2 emission, we estimate that PN numbers from H$\alpha$ surveys may underestimate the true PN number by a factor between 1.5 and 2.5 within the UWISH2 survey area., Comment: 20 pages, 8 figures. In the published article, we presented high-resolution polarimetry data obtained by using JCMT SCUBA-2/POL-2, and compared them with the larger-scale magnetic structure observed by Planck (Planck Collaboration et al. 2020). There was a miscalculation in the analysis of the Planck data for comparison, and the mean position angle of the Planck magnetic field should be corrected from -40° ± 7° to -48° ± 6°. Thus, we replace the descriptions in the published article as follows. In Section 4.2, paragraph 3, the second sentence should read: "The differences between the orientations of IRAS 4A, IRAS 4B, and IRAS 2A are not statistically significant, but they do show significantly different orientations from those of the global B-field observed by Planck (-48° ± 6°; Section 4.1)." In Section 4.1, paragraph 3, the second line should read: "The Planck B-field orientation shows a smoothly and slowly varying field distribution with a position angle of -48° ± 6° in our observed NGC 1333 area." Accordingly, we replace Figures 4, 5, 9, 10, and 17 to reflect the correct Planck data. As described above, this error of modest magnitude is related only to our derivation of the Planck polarization angle, and the JCMT observation results are unaffected. Therefore, all conclusions drawn in the published article are unchanged even after the above correction is applied. The 1 pc scale magnetic field observed by Planck shows a smooth distribution, and the interstellar magnetic field in molecular clouds increases the complexity significantly on the scale of less than 1 pc.

UWISH2 is the first unbiassed imaging survey of v =1 − 0 S(1) molecular hydrogen emission (λ = 2.122~μm) in the northern Galactic Plane. Here we discuss 284 extended emission line objects which we consider to be candidate planetary or pre-planetary nebulae. Some are clearly associated with known PN, but the majority (60%) have no previous detection. We have classified the objects according to morphology and find 53% are bipolar with half of these being new detections. The remaining objects are mostly elliptical/round (35%), fainter than the median sample flux (4.4 × 10−17 W m−2) and previously undetected (74%).

We present the 850 $\mu$m polarization observations toward the IC5146 filamentary cloud taken using the Submillimetre Common-User Bolometer Array 2 (SCUBA-2) and its associated polarimeter (POL-2), mounted on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT), as part of the B-fields In STar forming Regions Observations (BISTRO). This work is aimed at revealing the magnetic field morphology within a core-scale ($\lesssim 1.0$ pc) hub-filament structure (HFS) located at the end of a parsec-scale filament. To investigate whether or not the observed polarization traces the magnetic field in the HFS, we analyze the dependence between the observed polarization fraction and total intensity using a Bayesian approach with the polarization fraction described by the Rice likelihood function, which can correctly describe the probability density function (PDF) of the observed polarization fraction for low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) data. We find a power-law dependence between the polarization fraction and total intensity with an index of 0.56 in $A_V\sim$ 20--300 mag regions, suggesting that the dust grains in these dense regions can still be aligned with magnetic fields in the IC5146 regions. Our polarization maps reveal a curved magnetic field, possibly dragged by the contraction along the parsec-scale filament. We further obtain a magnetic field strength of 0.5$\pm$0.2 mG toward the central hub using the Davis-Chandrasekhar-Fermi method, corresponding to a mass-to-flux criticality of $\sim$ $1.3\pm0.4$ and an Alfv\'{e}nic Mach number of $, Comment: 24 pages, 15 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We investigate the spectral signatures arising from the optical properties of chlorophyll in linear and circularly polarised scattered light from cyanobacteria. We include Stokes scattering coefficient measurements on two cyanobacteria species, Chroococcidiopsis and Synechococcus to a fractional polarisation of ±0.0001 across visible wavelengths. We find that the largest circularly polarised optical signatures from our cyanobacteria samples can be described by optical scattering from spheroidal objects with internal reflections and absorption and, importantly, light scattering from chiral processes is not identifiable in our narrow band light scattering data. We believe previous light scattering measurements attributing chirality effects to cyanobacteria may have been dominated by internal scattering processes.

We present 2 to 2.4 micron integral field spectroscopy of a sample of hot post-AGB stars with early-B spectral types, using the NIFS instrument on Gemini North. These stars are just beginning to ionize their immediate environments and turn into planetary nebulae (PNe).We use molecular hydrogen emission lines together with hydrogen and helium recombination lines to explore the distribution of molecular and atomic gas and the extent of the developing ionized region. We see a range of evolutionary stages: IRAS 18062+2410 and IRAS 18379-1707 have recently developed compact and unresolved regions of photoionized H within axisymmetric molecular envelopes, with the former object increasing its Br-Gamma flux by a factor of 5.3 in 14 years; IRAS 22023+5249 and IRAS 20462+3416 have extended Br-Gamma nebulae and in the latter object only weak H2 emission remains; IRAS 19336-0400 is at a more advanced stage of PN formation where H2 is mostly dissociated and we see structure in both the H and He recombination line nebulae. IRAS 19200+3457 is the only object not to show the He I line at 2.058 micron and is probably the least evolved object in our sample; the H2 emission forms a ring around the star and we suggest that this object may be a rare example of a "round" pre-PN in transition to a "round" PN., Comment: 17 pages, 11 figures. We have mapped CO J = 3-2 and other molecular lines from the >water fountain> bipolar pre-planetary nebula (PPN) IRAS 16342-3814 with ∼0.″35 resolution using Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array. We find (i) two very high-speed knotty, jet-like molecular outflows; (ii) a central high-density ( cm), expanding torus of diameter 1300 au; and (iii) the circumstellar envelope of the progenitor AGB, generated by a sudden, very large increase in the mass-loss rate to M yr in the past ∼455 years. Strong continuum emission at 0.89 mm from a central source (690 mJy), if due to thermally emitting dust, implies a substantial mass (0.017 M ) of very large (∼millimeter-sized) grains. The measured expansion ages of the above structural components imply that the torus (age ∼160 years) and the younger high-velocity outflow (age ∼110 years) were formed soon after the sharp increase in the AGB mass-loss rate. Assuming a binary model for the jets in IRAS 16342, the high momentum rate for the dominant jet-outflow in IRAS 16342 implies a high minimum accretion rate, ruling out standard Bondi-Hoyle-Lyttleton wind accretion and wind Roche-lobe overflow (RLOF) models with white-dwarf or main-sequence companions. We present the discovery of 816 high amplitude infrared variable stars ($\Delta K_{\rm s} >$ 1 mag) in 119 deg$^2$ of the Galactic midplane covered by the Vista Variables in the Via Lactea (VVV) survey. Almost all are new discoveries and about 50$\%$ are YSOs. This provides further evidence that YSOs are the commonest high amplitude infrared variable stars in the Galactic plane. In the 2010-2014 time series of likely YSOs we find that the amplitude of variability increases towards younger evolutionary classes (class I and flat-spectrum sources) except on short timescales ($$100 days) and 162 short-term variables. Eruptive YSOs and faders tend to have the highest amplitudes and eruptive systems have the reddest SEDs. Follow up spectroscopy in a companion paper verifies high accretion rates in the eruptive systems. Variable extinction is disfavoured by the 2 epochs of colour data. These discoveries increase the number of eruptive variable YSOs by a factor of at least 5, most being at earlier stages of evolution than the known FUor and EXor types. We find that eruptive variability is at least an order of magnitude more common in class I YSOs than class II YSOs. Typical outburst durations are 1 to 4 years, between those of EXors and FUors. They occur in 3 to 6\% of class I YSOs over a 4 year time span., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS, 51 pages, 23 figures

We present a study of the radial distribution of dust species in young brown dwarf disks. Our work is based on a compositional analysis of the 10 and 20 micron silicate emission features for brown dwarfs in the Taurus-Auriga star-forming region. A fundamental finding of our work is that brown dwarfs exhibit stronger signs of dust processing in the cold component of the disk, compared to the higher mass T Tauri stars in Taurus. For nearly all of our targets, we find a flat disk structure, which is consistent with the stronger signs of dust processing observed in these disks. For the case of one brown dwarf, 2M04230607, we find the forsterite mass fraction to be a factor of ~3 higher in the outer disk compared to the inner disk region. Simple large-scale radial mixing cannot account for this gradient in the dust chemical composition, and some local crystalline formation mechanism may be effective in this disk. The relatively high abundance of crystalline silicates in the outer cold regions of brown dwarf disks provides an interesting analogy to comets. In this context, we have discussed the applicability of the various mechanisms that have been proposed for comets on the formation and the outward transport of high-temperature material. We also present Chandra X-ray observations for two Taurus brown dwarfs, 2M04414825 and CFHT-BD-Tau 9. We find 2M04414825, which has a ~12% crystalline mass fraction, to be more than an order of magnitude brighter in X-ray than CFHT-BD-Tau 9, which has a ~35% crystalline mass fraction. Combining with previous X-ray data, we find the inner disk crystalline mass fractions to be anti-correlated with the X-ray strength.

Post-AGB stars are key objects for the study of the dramatic morphological changes of low- to intermediate-mass stars on their evolution from the Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) towards the Planetary Nebula stage. There is growing evidences that binary interaction processes may very well have a determining role in the shaping process of many objects, but so far direct evidence is still weak. We aim at a systematic study of the dust distribution around a large sample of Post-AGB stars as a probe of the symmetry breaking in the nebulae around these systems. We used imaging in the mid-infrared to study the inner part of these evolved stars to probe direct emission from dusty structures in the core of Post-AGB stars in order to better understand their shaping mechanisms. We imaged a sample of 93 evolved stars and nebulae in the mid-infrared using VISIR/VLT, T-Recs/Gemini South and Michelle/Gemini North. We found that all the the Proto-Planetary Nebulae we resolved show a clear departure from spherical symmetry. 59 out of the 93 observed targets appear to be non resolved. The resolved targets can be divided in two categories. The nebulae with a dense central core, that are either bipolar and multipolar. The nebulae with no central core have an elliptical morphology. The dense central torus observed likely host binary systems which triggered fast outflows that shaped the nebulae.

We present K-band integral field spectroscopy of the bipolar post-AGB object IRAS 18276-1431 (OH 17.7-2.0) using SINFONI on the VLT. This allows us to image both the continuum and molecular features in this object from 1.95-2.45{\mu}m with a spatial resolution down to 70 mas and a spectral resolution of approx. 5000. We detect a range of H2 ro-vibrational emission lines which are consistent with shock excitation in regions of dense (approx. 10^7 cm^-3) gas with shock velocities in the range 25 - 30 km/s. The distribution of H2 emission in the bipolar lobes suggests that a fast wind is impinging on material in the cavity walls and tips. H2 emission is also seen along a line of sight close to the obscured star as well as in the equatorial region to either side of the stellar position which has the appearance of a ring with radius 0.3 arcsec. This latter feature may be radially cospatial with the boundary between the AGB and post-AGB winds. The first overtone 12^CO bandheads are observed longward of 2.29 {\mu}m with the v = 2-0 bandhead prominently in emission. The CO emission has the same spatial distribution as the K-band continuum and therefore originates from an unresolved central source close to the star. We interpret this as evidence for ongoing mass loss in this object. This conclusion is further supported by a rising K-band continuum indicating the presence of warm dust close to the star, possibly down to the condensation radius. The red-shifted scattered peak of the CO bandhead is used to estimate a dust velocity along the bipolar axis of 95 km/s for the collimated wind. This places a lower limit of approx. 125 yr on the age of the bipolar cavities, meaning that the collimated fast wind turned on very soon after the cessation of AGB mass loss.

Imaging polarimetry through J and H broad-band filters and a 3.4 � m narrow-band filter is used to highlight regions of scattered light in the Red Rectangle. We find that the scattered light identifies the circumbinary dust component of the molecular disc seen in CO emission. This region also appears to be the origin of the recently discovered Blue Luminescence. We find that the degrees of polarization are consistent with the amorphous carbon dust model invoked by Men’shchikov et al. (2002). Spectropolarimetry from 1.4 to 2.5 � m confirms that the degree of polarization in the central arcsecond region is very low. This suggests that the central bicone seen in the nearinfrared is due predominantly to emission from hot dust and/or from stochastically heated nanoparticles, rather than due to scattering by large grains.

We present near-infrared polarimetric images of the dusty circumstellar envelope (CSE) of IRAS 19306+1407, acquired at the United Kingdom Infrared Telescope (UKIRT) using the UKIRT 1-5 µm Imager Spectrometer (UIST) in conjunction with the half-waveplate module IRPOL2. We present additional 450 and 850 µm photometry obtained with the Sub-mm Common User Bolometer Array (SCUBA) at the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT), as well as archived Hubble Space Telescope (HST) F606W- and F814W-filter images. The CSE structure in polarized flux at J- and Kbands shows an elongation NNE-SSW with two bright scattering shoulders NW-SE. These features are not perpendicular to each other and could signify a recent ‘twist’ in the outflow axis. We model the CSE using an axisymmetric light scattering (ALS) code to investigate the polarization produced by the CSE, and an axisymmetric radiation transport (DART) code to fit the SED. A good fit was achieved with the ALS and DART models using silicate grains, 0.1-0.4 µm with a power-law size distribution of a 3.5 , and an axisymmetric shell geometry with an equator-to-pole contrast of 7:1. The spectral type of the central star is determined to be B1I supporting previous suggestions that the object is an early PN. We have constrained the CSE and interstellar extinction as 2.0 and 4.2 mag respectively, and have estimated a distance of 2.7 kpc. At this distance the stellar luminosity is ∼4500 L⊙ and the mass of the CSE ∼0.2 M⊙. We also determine that the mass loss lasted ∼5300 yrs with a mass-loss rate of ∼3.4×10 5 M ⊙ yr 1 .

We present late-time optical and mid-infrared observations of the Type-II supernova 2003gd in NGC 628. Mid-infrared excesses consistent with cooling dust in the ejecta are observed 499-678 days after outburst, and are accompanied by increasing optical extinction and growing asymmetries in the emission-line profiles. Radiative-transfer models show that up to 0.02 solar masses of dust has formed within the ejecta, beginning as early as 250 days after outburst. These observations show that dust formation in supernova ejecta can be efficient and that massive-star supernovae can be major dust producers throughout the history of the Universe., 11 pages, 1 figure. We have carried out JHK polarimetric observations of eleven dusty young stars, by using the polarimeter module IRPOL2 with the near-IR camera UIST on the 3.8-m United Kingdom Infrared Telescope (UKIRT). Our sample targeted systems for which UKIRT-resolvable discs had been predicted by model fits to their spectral energy distributions. Our observations have confirmed the presence of extended polarized emission around TW Hya and around HD 169142. HD 150193 and HD 142666 show the largest polarization values among our sample, but no extended structure was resolved. By combining our observations with HST coronographic data from the literature, we derive the J- and H-band intrinsic polarization radial dependences of TW Hya's disc. We find the disc's polarizing efficiency is higher at H than at J, and we confirm that the J- and H-band percentage polarizations are reasonably constant with radius in the region between 0.9 and 1.3 arcseconds from the star. We find that the objects for which we have detected extended polarizations are those for which previous modelling has suggested the presence of flared discs, which are predicted to be brighter than flat discs and thus would be easier to detect polarimetrically.

Echelle spectroscopy of H2, [FeII] and Br-gamma line emission from a very young planetary nebula, IRAS 21282+5050, and from four proto-planetary nebulae, IRAS 19343+2926 (M 1-92), IRAS 17150-3224 (AFGL 6815), IRAS 17423-1755 (Hen 3-1475), and IRAS 17441-2411 is presented. H2 line emission is detected in discrete shock fronts in the lobes of each nebula, regardless of source spectral type. In IRAS 17150-3224 we also uncover possible signs of rotation, as would be expected if the H2 features were excited in a magneto-centrifugal disk wind. [FeII] emission was detected in only one source, M 1-92. The H2 and [FeII] observations of M 1-92, and the complex H2 profiles in IRAS 21282+5050, are explained using the shock models of Smith and collaborators. J-type bow models are adequate in each case, i.e. a strongly-magnetised wind is not required. Finally, Br-gamma is detected in each of the five targets; in absorption in the G-type PPN though in emission in the O and B-type sources. Br-gamma emission is detected predominantly toward the near-IR continuum peak in each PPN. Low peak velocities, though very broad profile widths, are measured in each target. The emission must therefore derive from ionised regions in a fast wind very close to the central star, or, in the late-type sources, from absorption in an equatorial torus., Comment: 17 pages, 13 figures

Ultraviolet circularly polarised light has been suggested as the initial cause of the homochirality of organic molecules in terrestrial organisms, via enantiomeric selection of prebiotic molecules by asymmetric photolysis. We present a theoretical investigation of mechanisms by which ultraviolet circular polarisation may be produced in star formation regions. In the scenarios considered here, light scattering produces only a small percentage of net circular polarisation at any point in space, due to the forward throwing nature of the phase function in the ultraviolet. By contrast, dichroic extinction can produce a fairly high percentage of net circular polarisation (~10%) and may therefore play a key role in producing an enantiomeric excess., Accepted by 'Origins of Life and Evolution of the Biosphere'. 29 pages, 10 figures

In an imaging polarimetry survey of candidate post-AGB stars, scattering envelopes are detected around 20 objects. These envelopes represent the final mass-loss phases at the end of the AGB. In all cases, evidence for axisymmetry in the dust density is seen, suggesting that the presence of an axisymmetric outflow may be a ubiquitous phenomenon of the AGB to post-AGB transition. We use the polarized flux images to classify the objects into detached shell, bipolar and unresolved targets. Modelling based on a simple axisymmetric shell geometry supports the contention that post-AGB objects fall into one of two classes that differ in the amount of dust in the circumstellar environment: the detached shells correspond to stars with an optically thin expanding circumstellar envelope (CSE) whereas the bipolar and unresolved targets have optically thick dust structures, probably in the form of discs, which remain bound to the star, rather than partaking in the expansion of the AGB CSE. It is suggested that this bifurcation in morphology is rooted in the presence or absence of a binary companion, which determines whether or not a disc forms. Because the detached shell objects also appear axisymmetric, an additional mechanism for generating the axisymmetry, such as a magnetically shaped outflow, is needed if they do indeed have single star progenitors.

We present 10 and 20 micron images of IRAS 19500-1709 taken with the mid-infrared camera, OSCIR, mounted on the Gemini North Telescope. An extended circumstellar envelope is detected, with the N band image indicating an elongation in a NE-SW direction. We use a dust radiation transport code to fit the spectral energy distribution from UV to sub-mm wavelengths, with a detached dust shell model. A good fit is achieved using dust composed of amorphous carbon, silicon carbide and magnesium sulphide. We derive estimates for the inner and outer radius, density and mass of the dust in the shell. The inner radius is not resolved in our OSCIR imaging, giving an upper limit of 0.4 arcsec. With this constraint, we conclude that IRAS 19500-1709 must be at least 4 kpc away in order to have the minimum luminosity consistent with a post-AGB status., 5 pages, 2 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present the third in a series of results from our programme of the detection and measurement of magnetic fields in protoplanetary nebulae (PPN), using full-polarization MERLIN observations of OH masers. These are the first maps of the OH 1612- and 1667-MHz masing emission from IRAS 20406+2953. We have identified a Zeeman pair in the 1612-MHz data; this result heralds the second magnetic field strength measured in-a PPN. We show that the field, of strength -3.1 mG, is sufficiently strong to be shaping the outflowing mass from the star. By considering the spatial distribution of the masers and the structure of the linear polarization data, we suggest a field configuration that is toroidal. The observed change in polarization position angle between the peak red- and blueshifted components of the maser features, if attributed to Faraday rotation within the circumstellar envelope, gives an electron density of ∼1 cm -3 . We show that this is sufficient to freeze the field into the outflowing wind.

We report the diminution of the 1667-MHz OH maser in the post-asymptotic giant branch star IRAS 17436 + 5003, by a factor of greater than or similar to 17 over a period of less than or similar to 12 yr, from observations with MERLIN. This circumstellar maser was detected by Likkel in 1987, at the 13sigma level of her observations with the Green Bank Telescope. We discuss a number of possible reasons for this phenomenon and conclude that it is most likely due to turbulence arising from interacting stellar winds.

We present mid-infrared (IR) images of HD 161796 (IRAS 17436+5003), taken with the OSCIR imager on the Gemini North Telescope, that resolve for the first time the thermal emission structure of the dust shell around this post-asymptotic giant branch (AGB) star. As well as a basic axisymmetric structure, the observations show deviations from axisymmetry in the dust density and a twist in the symmetry axis. Modelling of the mid-IR images and of the spectral energy distribution from ultraviolet to submillimetre wavelengths reproduces all of the axisymmetric features with an equator-to-pole density contrast of 6: 1 and an inclination of the symmetry axis of 10° to the plane of the sky. We find that a model incorporating small (0.01μm) grains and a steep (α a - 6 ) power-law size distribution can successfully account for the thermal emission and for the observed degrees of near-IR polarization. Assuming a distance of 1.2 kpc to HD 161796, the stellar luminosity is 3.4 x 10 3 L O . and the mass of the shell is ∼0.7 M O .. This is consistent with a star of initial mass between 1 and 2 M O . that has undergone an intensive (2.2 x 10 - 4 M O . yr - 1 ) phase of mass loss lasting about 3000 yr at the end of the AGB. A current stellar mass of 0.56 M O ., as indicated by the luminosity, suggests that HD 161796 is a few hundred years into its post-AGB evolution and will take about 5000 yr to evolve from its present temperature of 7500 K to become the central star of an extended elliptical planetary nebula.

Imaging polarimetry has been used to study the extended, detached circumstellar shells around the bright carbon stars R Scl and U Ant. The observations were done in two narrow band filters centred on the resonance lines of neutral K and Na, but much broader than the expected line widths. The polarimetric data reveal brightness distributions, in both cases, which are in perfect agreement with previous observations of scattered light obtained through direct imaging techniques. The total intensity images towards R Scl outline, in both filters, circular disk-like distributions out to a radius of21 00 ,w here the intensity drops sharply. The polarised intensity images reveal, however, that the scattering occurs in a geometrically thin shell. The degree of polarisation reaches values of35% in both filters. The imaging polarimetry observations of U Ant reveal a somewhat more complex structure, where the existence of several shells can be discerned. The polarised scattered light comes from a component, at a radius of50 00 from the star, which lies outside the region where the bulk of the light is scattered. The latter comes from a dominating shell at43 00 , which coincides spatially with the detached gas shell inferred from CO radio line data, and there may be another two shells inside this. The polarisation degree reaches50% in the outer component. We model, with a code based on the Monte Carlo method, the scattered emission under the assumption of dust scattering, using the observed polarised brightness distributions as constraints. In the case of R Scl we found that the polarised, as well as the total, light distributions can be explained by scattering in a 2 00 wide shell of radius 20 00 containing a dust mass of2 10 6 M. This dust shell is also responsible for the thermal dust emission measured by IRAS. There is room, up to 30% of the total scattered flux, for other scattering agents. Comparison with CO radio line data shows that this dust shell probably lies outside the detached CO gas shell. In the case of U Ant the modelling explains the outer component in terms of a 5 00 wide shell at a radius of about 52 00 with a dust mass of4 10 6 M. This is also the dust shell responsible for the emission measured by IRAS. However, the bulk of the scattered light cannot in this case be due to scattering by dust. In accordance with a discussion in a previous paper we attribute the remaining, unpolarised, scattering to the KI and Na D resonance lines. In both cases we found evidence that a dust shell has separated from the rest of the circumstellar medium. This may be due to gas-grain drift, or to hydrodynamical eects, which may also explain the complex multiple-shell structure seen towards U Ant. The model results are very dependent on the grain size distribution, and the observational data can only be reconciled with a very steep decline in grain size.

Jets and winds in pre-main sequence (PMS) stars are often heated and ionized, and understanding their heating mechanism is desired to compare UV-to-IR spectral signatures with models and thus investigate their driving mechanism. We review our results of long-slit spectroscopy and spectro-astrometry for He I 1.083 μm and Hα emission, and investigate the heating mechanisms in the jet in the outer (> 10 AU) and inner (< 10 AU) regions, respectively.

We present J, H and K band coronagraph images of the circumstellar envelope around IRC +10216 (CW Leo) obtained with a near infrared camera, CIAO and the 8.2 m Subaru telescope. A circular occulting mask of 2 �� in diameter was used to block out the light from the bright central object. The images show 2 collimated radial structures to the NNW and WNW, 2 fan-like structures to the S and NE, respectively, and 3 arc-like structures at a radius of 4 to 5 arcsec from the stellar center. We compare this intermediate size-scale structure to that seen on larger and smaller scales and find evidence for a deviation from spherically symmetric outflow beginning ∼150 years ago. Previous near infrared speckle imaging has revealed a complex clumpy structure on a scale of less than 200 mas, and it is likely that at least some of the radial features seen in our images could be due to shadowing by dust clumps close to the star.

We present long-slit spectroscopy and spectro-astrometry of HeI 1.083 micron emission in the T Tauri star, DG Tau. We identify three components in the HeI feature: (1) a blueshifted emission component atv -200 km s^-1, (2) a bright emission component at zero-velocity with a FWZI of ~500 km s^-1, and (3) a blueshifted absorption feature at velocities between -250 and -500 km s^-1. The position and velocity of the blueshifted HeI emission coincide with a high-velocity component (HVC) of the [FeII] 1.257 micron emission, which arises from a jet within an arcsecond of the star. The presence of such a high excitation line (excitation energy ~ 20 eV) within the jet supports the scenario of shock heating. The bright HeI component does not show any spatial extension, and it is likely to arise from magnetospheric accretion columns. The blueshifted absorption shows greater velocities than that in H-alpha, suggesting that these absorption features arise from the accelerating wind close to the star.

We have used the technique of spectro-astrometry to study the milli-arcsecond scale structure of the emission lines in the T Tauri star RU Lupi. The wings of the H-alpha emission are found to be displaced from the star towards the south-west (blue wing) and north-east (red wing) with angular scales of 20-30 milli-arcsecs. This structure is consistent with a bipolar outflow from the star. From a study of the variability of the intensity and position spectra we argue that a combination of magnetically-driven bipolar outflow and accreting gas contribute to the H-alpha emission. On the other hand, the [OI] and [SII] emission are displaced from the star to the south-west but at much larger distances than the H-alpha, hundreds of milli-arcsecs for the high-velocity component (HVC) and down to 30 milli-arcsecs for the low-velocity components (LVC). The presence of both red-shifted and blue-shifted outflows in H-alpha but only a blue-shifted outflow in the forbidden lines can be explained if the disc obscures the red-shifted forbidden line outflow, but a disc gap with outer radius 3-4 au allows the red-shifted H-alpha to be seen. We use ground-based imaging polarimetry to detect and image the dusty circumstellar envelopes of a sample of proto-planetary nebulae (PPNe) at near-infrared wavelengths. We detect extended (up to 9 arcsec diameter) circumstellar envelopes around 15 out of 16 sources with a range of morphologies including bipolars and shells. The distribution of scattered light in combination with its polarization (up to 40 per cent) provides unambiguous evidence for axisymmetry in 14 objects showing this to be a common trait of PPNe. We suggest that the range of observed envelope morphologies results from the development of an axisymmetric dust distribution during the superwind phase at the end of the AGB. We identify shells seen in polarized light with scattering from these superwind dust distributions which allows us to provide constraints on the duration of the superwind phase. In one object (IRAS 19475+3119) the circumstellar envelope has a two-armed spiral structure which we suggest results from the interaction of the mass losing star with a binary companion., 25 pages (two column format) and 16 figures.
