1. Patterns of media use and leisure time among older adults.

Abstract

The aging population is rapidly growing both in the United States and many other parts of the world. Simultaneously, technology is rapidly progressing, and new forms of media have become integrated into daily life and societal participation. This study uses time diary data from a panel survey of members of nationally representative households (N = 1776) to explore patterns of media use and functionally equivalent leisure time among older adults. The data support a three-profile typology of older adult use of media and non-media leisure activities. These include the computer socializer, the hobbyist, and the television watcher. We elaborate on these patterns of use and explore correlates with demographic and well-being variables. We find no evidence that well-being significantly differs across profiles of media use but identify income and employment status as potential drivers of older adults' media activity, with implications for digital inequalities. Additionally, the restricted cubic spline model (RCSM) was adopted to fit the MOLRM to evaluate the nonlinear relationship between digital activity duration and sleep quality, and thus determine the optimal range of digital activity duration.Results: The analysis included 7849 working young adults. The digital usage rate was 84.11%. Digital use was not significantly associated with average, workday, or free-day sleep duration, after controlling for all potential confounders. However, most digital activity indicators could significantly predict bedtime and sleep quality. Furthermore, the RCSM indicated a non-linear relationship pattern between digital activity duration and sleep quality, with a weekly peak point of 25 h. Age significantly moderated the relationship between digital activity, sleep duration and bedtime. Younger youth who used digital media more frequently and for a longer time tended to sleep later and had shorter sleep duration than older youth.Conclusion: Digital usage significantly predicted later bedtime among Chinese working youth; however, it was not linked with sleep duration on workdays or free days. In parallel, a nonlinear correlation between digital activity duration and sleep quality indicated that appropriate digital activity duration (less than 25 h weekly) may contribute to good sleep quality.Keywords: working youth, digital activity, sleep issues, time shifting, time displacement

Abstract

5. Earlier smartphone acquisition negatively impacts language proficiency, but only for heavy media users. Results from a longitudinal quasi-experimental study

Abstract

There is a growing debate about the proper age at which teens should be given permission to own a personal smartphone. While experts in different disciplines provide parents and educators with conflicting guidelines, the age of first smartphone acquisition is constantly decreasing and there is still limited evidence on the impact of anticipating the age of access on learning outcomes. Drawing on two-wave longitudinal data collected on a sample of 1672 students in 2013 (at grade 5) and 2016 (at grade 8), this study evaluates whether obtaining the first personal smartphone at 10 or 11 years old, during the transition to lower secondary school (early owning), affected their language proficiency trends compared to receiving it from the age of 12 onwards (late owning). Results indicate an overall null effect of smartphone early owning on adolescents’ language proficiency trajectories, while a negative effect is found on those who were already heavy screen media users before receiving the device.

The time displacement hypothesis has been widely used to explain the effects of media use on academic performance. This approach has been criticised for its monocausality and weak explanatory power. Utilising a combination of different theoretical perspectives is better suited than utilising only one. Considering displacement, excitement, attraction and third variable hypothesis, this paper argues that the relation between video game use and school performance is not the same for all types of gamers by considering the influence of socioeconomic, psychological and contextual factors. It investigates how gaming patterns (frequency, time of day) and psychological characteristics (sensation seeking, aggression) are related to academic performance for primary and secondary school students. Five hundred and seven students from five primary and four secondary schools in Singapore participated in a paper-pencil survey. Results showed support for a combination of displacement and third variable hypothesis, as overall time spent on video games was negatively associated with primary school children's and active gamers' school performances. There was no significant relationship for secondary school children. For primary school children who play games in the morning and afternoon, video game use was negatively associated with school performance. Abstract

Objective: The recurrence rate in the treatment of liver tumors using radio frequency ablation (RFA) is often related to incomplete tissue necrosis and consequently the limitation in the ablation volume. This paper proposes an ablation protocol combined with the infusion of saline solution and deionized water aiming at achieving a time displacement in the roll-off occurrence and consequently increasing the volume of ablation. Methods: An infusion of saline solution and deionized water at 5 and 23  $^\circ$ C was performed to evaluate the influence of these liquids on the RFA procedure in ex vivo bovine liver pieces. The obtained results were used to propose a mathematical model of the roll-off phenomenon by means of the system identification techniques. Results: The RFA combined with the infusion of saline solution 0.9% at 5  $^\circ$ C presented optimal results, with a time delay of the roll-off occurrence in 27.8% compared to pure RFA ($p$ = 0.002) and an increase in the necrotic volume of 51.2% ($p$ = 0.0002). Two Box–Jenkins models were obtained to describe the roll-off phenomenon: 1) pure RFA; and 2) RFA combined with the saline solution 0.9% at 5  $^\circ$ C. Conclusion: The RFA therapy combined with the saline solution 0.9% at 5  $^\circ$ C increases the time range to the roll-off occurrence, leading to higher necrosis volumes in ex vivo bovine liver samples. The development of a mathematical model to describe the roll-off behavior demonstrated that the transient response is improved by the infusion of the saline solution 0.9% at 5  $^\circ$ C. Abstract

This work presents an optimized implementation of the Computer-Aided Speckle Interferometry algorithm which enables full-field determination of displacements and strains on commodity Graphics Processing Units at high resolution and frame rates. By combining careful control of the average speckle size in a laser speckle pattern with a simple sampling rate conversion scheme, a compact representation of the optical speckle is achieved. This allows for optimal use of Graphics Processing Unit architecture with robust range extension. The optimal mapping of the Computer-Aided Speckle Interferometry algorithm to Graphics Processing Unit architecture is shown in detail, and a straightforward method for disambiguating large displacements is illustrated. Lastly, this paper demonstrates a two-step subimage-tapering modification to the original algorithm that enables robust range enhancement while maintaining resolution. Results from numerical simulations on synthetic speckle patterns are shown, and runtime performance metrics are provided, with performance ranging up to 60 frames per second in some cases. The method is suitable for interactive experimental mechanics research, process and testing or any application where real-time high-resolution displacement-strain monitoring is needed. A .NET Framework class library enabling the incorporation of the algorithm into 3rd -party applications is available for download.

11. Active on Facebook and Failing at School? Meta-Analytic Findings on the Relationship Between Online Social Networking Activities and Academic Achievement.

Abstract

The popularity of social networking sites (SNSs) among adolescents and young adults has raised concerns that the intensity of using these platforms might be associated with lower academic achievement. The empirical findings on this issue, however, are anything but conclusive. Therefore, we present four random-effects meta-analyses including 59 independent samples (total N = 29,337) on the association between patterns of SNS use and grades. The meta-analyses identified small negative effects of ρ̂ = − .07, 95% CI [− .12, − .02] for general SNS use and ρ̂ = − .10, 95% CI [− .16, − .05] for SNS use related to multitasking. General SNS use was unrelated to the time spent studying for school (ρ̂ = − .03, 95% CI [− 0.11, 0.06]) and no support for the time displacement hypothesis could be found in a meta-analytical mediation analysis. SNS use for academic purposes exhibited a small positive association, ρ̂ =.08, 95% CI [.02,.14]. Hypotheses with regard to cross-cultural differences were not supported. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

This study was conducted to determine social media usage and its influence on the quality time spent with family among the students of the International Islamic University of Malaysia (IIUM). The objectives of the study are to determine: (a) the exposure to social media use; (b) the level of perception, attitude, and behavior towards social media use, and the quality time spent with family; and (c) the relationships of perception, attitude, and behaviour towards social media use with the quality time spent with family. Time displacement theory was used to explain the relationship between the variables. The quantitative research design was employed using a network sampling survey method, with a questionnaire as a tool for data collection. A total of 210 respondents participated in this study. The findings of the study revealed that WhatsApp is the most frequently used social media platform, followed by YouTube, E-mail, Instagram, Facebook, and Telegram. The levels of perception, attitude, and behavior towards social media usage and the quality of time spent with family are high and significant. Perception, attitude, and behavior were found to show a significant positive correlation with social media usage and the quality time spent with family. Thus, this study suggests that students should allocate the time they spend on social media for their families.

14. Where does time spent on the Internet come from? Tracing the influence of information and communications technology use on daily activities.

Abstract

We explore from a time-use perspective how private use of computers and the Internet [information and communications technologies (ICTs)] is transforming everyday life. Data from the Swedish 2010–2011 Time-Use Survey reflect a situation in which Internet use has spread widely and become routine for many. Using covariate analysis, we analyse differences in general time use between four groups of ICT users ranging from non-users to heavy users. The theoretical departure point is a nuanced discussion of the time-displacement concept. Results indicate that private time spent using ICTs is associated primarily with individuals’ available free time, that is, elastic relative to time for paid work (i.e. contracted time). Heavy ICT users spend more time on activities carried out alone, are more home centred, and less mobile. Heavy use is associated with somewhat lesscommitted timespent, for example, on maintenance work or taking care of children. Regardingpersonal time, time for meals is negatively related to heavy use, while night-time sleep is unaffected. Concerningfree time, heavy use takes time fromsports and outdoor recreation, but has no effect on offlinemedia use,entertainment and cultural activities, orreading. Heavy use does not affect time spent onsocial activities, for example, for social interaction with family and friends or time spent on voluntary associations. Observed differences become significant at certain thresholds of ICT-related time use, involving heavy users who spend one hour or more on computers and the Internet every day. Abstract

As people increasingly access movies, user-created content, and linear television programs through the Internet, scholars are paying attention to the effect of online video services on various media markets, including the broadcasting market. Focusing on South Korea, this study examines how changes in the time spent on online video services affect the time spent on other media: terrestrial TV, pay TV, terrestrial DMB, radio, SNSs, games, newspapers, and books. This study also examines how this time displacement effect of online videos on other media differs across various video content categories. The results show that an increase in the time spent on online video services reduces the time spent on cable TV and games. Among the online video content categories, broadcast network programs and cable network programs reduced the time spent on cable TV, and movies reduced the time spent on games. Moreover, the amount of time spent viewing online videos reduced the time spent on non-media activities but increased sleeping time. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

This paper proposes an effective and convenient method to analyze slope stability in real time, which is based on fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors. First, a new type of FBG inclinometer is designed to capture the internal slope displacement variation considering temperature compensation, and an optimum displacement algorithm is selected by an experiment. Once the monitoring work is prepared, the potential slope slip surface is determined by monitored displacement in an optimization model based on the maximum displacement increment of the objective function. Finally, integral processing is used with the Bishop method to simplify the calculation, and a safety factor is estimated by the integral method. An experimental model test of homogeneous soil is conducted to verify the feasibility and reliability of the proposed analytical method and the FBG monitoring technique.

Abstract

A novel displacement sensor based on polarization properties in fiber is demonstrated in this paper. The cantilever beam is used as a transducer to convert the displacement into a transverse force onto the fiber which results in the fiber birefringence and hence the amplitude of the Stokes parameters in fiber. The sensitivity and linear range of the sensor depends on incident state of polarization (SOP) and the mechanical and geometric parameters of the cantilever beam. The highest sensitivity of 4.0045/mm has been achieved in the experiments.

Abstract

Елементи конструкцій при експлуатації можуть піддаватись динамічним навантаженням, що призводить до виникнення коливань, які можуть привести до небезпечних станів. Дисипативні коливання є небезпечними за несиметрії характеристики пружності. В даній роботі описано вільні затухаючі коливання дисипативного осцилятора з несиметричною квадратично нелінійною характеристикою пружності, при наявності сухого тертя Кулона. Метою дослідження є виведення точних формул для обчислення переміщень осцилятора в часі та визначення розмахів коливань і тривалостей напівциклів, які залежать від амплітуд із-за нелінійності системи. Перший інтеграл рівняння руху виражено в елементарних функціях, а другий – в еліптичних функціях Якобі. З першим інтегралом пов’язано обчислення розмахів коливань, а з другим – переміщення осцилятора в часі. Показано, що із-за несиметрії пружної характеристики процес вільних коливань залежить від того в який бік було надано стартове відхилення системі від положення статичної рівноваги. Тривалості напівциклів виражено через повні еліптичні інтеграли першого роду. Одержаний розв'язок зберігає форму і при відсутності в системі сухого тертя, коли система консервативна, а розмахи коливань у бік протилежний початковому відхиленню можуть бути більші ніж початкове відхилення. Виведені формули для першого циклу коливань легко поширити на любий цикл коливань. Запропоновано компактну наближену формулу для обчислення значень еліптичного синуса. Dissipative oscillations are dangerous due to the asymmetry of the elasticity characteristic. This paper describes free damped oscillations of a dissipative oscillator with an asymmetric quadratically nonlinear characteristic of elasticity in the presence of Coulomb dry friction. The aim of the study is to derive exact formulas for calculating the oscillator displacements in time and to determine the amplitude and duration of the half-cycles, which depend on the amplitudes due to the nonlinearity of the system. The first integral of the equation of motion is expressed in elementary functions, and the second – in Jacobi elliptic functions. The first integral is associated with the calculation of the ranges of oscillations, and with the second - the movement of the oscillator in time. It is shown that, due to the asymmetry of the elastic characteristic, the process of free vibrations depends on the direction in which the starting deviation of the system from the position of static equilibrium was set. The durations of the half-cycles are expressed in terms of complete elliptic integrals of the first kind. The obtained solution retains its shape even in the absence of dry friction in the system, when the system is conservative, and the range of oscillations in the direction opposite to the initial deviation may be greater than the initial deviation. The derived formulas for the first cycle of oscillations can be easily extended to any cycle of oscillations. A compact approximate formula is proposed for calculating the values of the elliptic sine. Comparisons of displacements obtained with its use in analytical solutions and numerical integration of the original differential equation on a computer are made. Good consistency of the calculation results was obtained in two ways, thereby confirming the adequacy of the formulas. Their practical implementation requires the calculation of complete elliptic integrals of the first kind, which is not difficult to implement by interpolating tabular data published in many publications on special functions.

This research study tests the Robert Putnam's Time Displacement Hypothesis regarding the social capital, in which he relates the too much use of media with the decrease of social capital of users especially the children and youth in terms of their interpersonal communication with family, friends and colleagues, physical activities, games, exercise and social events etc. The survey of 500 young people studying in the various colleges and universities of the twin cities of Rawalpindi/Islamabad explored the internet using pattern of youth and how the internet use affects their social capital. This study shows that Pakistani youth uses the internet mostly for Information, Education, Music/Film/Video and E-Mail purposes. However, the youth was not significantly using the internet for Online Games, Chatting, Social Networking Sites and Online Newspapers. Furthermore, the study did not support the Time Displacement Hypothesis of Robert Putnam (1995). A time diary survey was administered to a sample of 200 university students to measure the way they spent their time during one 24-hour period. In general, the study has demonstrated that Saudi students shift to the Internet for social and entertainment purposes at the expense of the time they spend on TV viewing. Abstract

Елементи конструкцій при експлуатації можуть піддаватись динамічним навантаженням, що призводить до виникнення коливань, які можуть привести до небезпечних станів. Дисипативні коливання є небезпечними за несиметрії характеристики пружності. В даній роботі описано вільні затухаючі коливання дисипативного осцилятора з несиметричною квадратично нелінійною характеристикою пружності, при наявності сухого тертя Кулона. Метою дослідження є виведення точних формул для обчислення переміщень осцилятора в часі та визначення розмахів коливань і тривалостей напівциклів, які залежать від амплітуд із-за нелінійності системи. Перший інтеграл рівняння руху виражено в елементарних функціях, а другий – в еліптичних функціях Якобі. З першим інтегралом пов’язано обчислення розмахів коливань, а з другим – переміщення осцилятора в часі. Показано, що із-за несиметрії пружної характеристики процес вільних коливань залежить від того в який бік було надано стартове відхилення системі від положення статичної рівноваги. Тривалості напівциклів виражено через повні еліптичні інтеграли першого роду. Одержаний розв'язок зберігає форму і при відсутності в системі сухого тертя, коли система консервативна, а розмахи коливань у бік протилежний початковому відхиленню можуть бути більші ніж початкове відхилення. Виведені формули для першого циклу коливань легко поширити на любий цикл коливань. Запропоновано компактну наближену формулу для обчислення значень еліптичного синуса. Проведено порівняння переміщень, одержаних з її використанням в аналітичних розв’язках і чисельним інтегруванням вихідного диференціального рівняння на комп’ютері. Abstract

A real-time displacement reconstruction technique based on a phase retardation method is proposed. By introducing a waveplate and a polarization beam splitter into the external cavity, two self-mixing signals with a phase shift of π ∕ 2 can be obtained. Then the displacement of the external object can be reconstructed by a quadrature demodulation algorithm, which significantly simplifies the data processing and meets the requirements of real-time displacement reconstruction techniques. The results show that the absolute errors of the reconstructed displacements are less than 75 nm .

The popularity of social networking sites (SNSs) among adolescents and young adults has raised concerns that the intensity of using these platforms might be associated with lower academic achievement. The empirical findings on this issue, however, are anything but conclusive. Therefore, we present four random-effects meta-analyses including 59 independent samples (total N = 29,337) on the association between patterns of SNS use and grades. The meta-analyses identified small negative effects of $$ \widehat{\rho} $$ = − .07, 95% CI [− .12, − .02] for general SNS use and $$ \widehat{\rho} $$ = − .10, 95% CI [− .16, − .05] for SNS use related to multitasking. General SNS use was unrelated to the time spent studying for school ( $$ \widehat{\rho} $$ = − .03, 95% CI [− 0.11, 0.06]) and no support for the time displacement hypothesis could be found in a meta-analytical mediation analysis. SNS use for academic purposes exhibited a small positive association, $$ \widehat{\rho} $$ = .08, 95% CI [.02, .14]. Hypotheses with regard to cross-cultural differences were not supported.

Abstract: We have developed a novel variant of REDOR which is applicable to multiple-spin systems without proton decoupling. The pulse sequence is constructed based on a systematic time displacement of the pi pulses of the conventional REDOR sequence. This so-called time displacement REDOR (td-REDOR) is insensitive to the effect of homonuclear dipole–dipole interaction when the higher order effects are negligible. The validity of td-REDOR has been verified experimentally by the P-31{C-13} measurements on glyphosate at a spinning frequency of 25kHz. A major concern about new technologies like IT is how much they might displace time on media and other daily activities. Three highly-publicized early studies of the initial impact of IT indicated it was reducing time on both social life and mass media use. However, data from a number of high-quality national surveys since then—from the Pew Center, the General Social Survey (GSS), the Survey of Public Participation in the Arts (SPPA) and the American Time Use Survey (ATUS)—have not replicated these results, in some cases finding increased social life and media use (especially reading) among IT users. The present article examines data from two separate national surveys (the GSS 2002 and the SPPA 2008), Even though the two studies asked different IT questions and examined different arts activities over different periods of Internet diffusion, progressively higher arts participation was found among Internet users, before and after education and other predictors of arts activity were controlled. The SPPA data also show that users and heavier IT users were also more active in a variety of other free time activities like attending movies, volunteering and sports. IT use here then becomes a away of extending or enhancing live attendance rather than displacing it. Abstract

A major concern about new technologies like information technology (IT) is how much they impact existing media and behaviour, particularly in reducing time on these behaviours. The present article first examines whether Internet users report spending less time on various leisure (and non-leisure) activities. It uses data from three separate national surveys about the public's leisure participation: (1) estimate data from the SPPA2008; (2) single-day diary data from the 2003-2007 American Time Use Survey; and (3) weekly diary data from the 2000 National Survey of Parents to examine whether users of IT participate less in various leisure activities, perhaps as a function of substituting IT use for participating more actively. First, the Survey of Public Participation in the Arts (SPPA) estimate data show that users and heavier IT users are also more active in a variety of other free time activities such as movies, volunteering and sports. Moreover, the relation continues to hold after education (the major predictor of leisure participation), income, age and other predictors of leisure activity are controlled. However, both daily and weekly diary data show far less if any difference, and the lack of parallel results from these diary studies raises questions about whether the SPPA correlations result from a 'response set' of respondents overestimating their activity participation. Nonetheless, there still seems no solid evidence that IT leads to notable decreases in social life, media use or other ways of spending both free time and non-leisure time, as claimed in the three initial surveys. This study sets out to identify relations between people's media use, network capital as a resource, and loneliness. Unlike many studies on this topic, this study aimed to test hypotheses on a national sample, and used insights from empirical research and theoretical notions from different research areas. Data collected via telephone interviews in 2005 were analyzed with Structural Equation Modeling. The assumption that traditional and new media destroy social capital is not supported empirically. Moreover, online network capital augments offline network capital and web surfing coincides with more online socializing. However, this additional capital appears not to have benefits in terms of social support and loneliness. The reverse causal relation between loneliness and media use also could not be established. Abstract

Analysis of early time-diary studies suggests that television has had more impact on daily time than any other household technology in the past century. In the United States, viewing time has steadily increased from roughly ten weekly hours in the 1960s to sixteen hours today, encompassing almost half of all "free time" reported in the diaries. A prominent recent TV casualty has been time spent reading the newspaper, providing further support for the functional equivalence argument. This article shows that, so far at least, viewing time seems little affected by the Internet and other recent new technologies. Studies of the public's satisfaction with various activities suggest that viewers find TV to be more enjoyable in the doing rather than in general, even though it may not be particularly challenging or demanding of concentration. Abstract

We examine the problem of accepting a new request for a pre-stored VBR video stream that has been smoothed using any of the smoothing algorithms found in the literature. The output of these algorithms is a piecewise constant-rate schedule for a Variable Bit-Rate (VBR) stream. The schedule guarantees that the decoder buffer does not overflow or underflow. The problem addressed in this paper is the determination of the minimal time displacement of each new requested VBR stream so that it can be accommodated by the network and/or the video server without overbooking the committed traffic. We prove that this call-admission control problem for multiple requested VBR streams is NP-complete and inapproximable within a constant factor, by reducing it from the VERTEX COLOR problem. We also present a deterministic morphology-sensitive algorithm that calculates the minimal time displacement of a VBR stream request. The complexity of the proposed algorithm along with the experimental results we provide indicate that the proposed algorithm is suitable for real-time determination of the time displacement parameter during the call admission phase. Abstract

We describe a longitudinal user study conducted in the context of a Spoken Dialogue System for a household robot, where we examined the influence of time displacement and situational risk on users’ preferred responses. To this effect, we employed a corpus of spoken requests that asked a robot to fetch or move objects in a room. In the first stage of our study, participants selected among four response types to these requests under two risk conditions: low and high. After some time, the same participants rated several responses to the previous requests — these responses were instantiated from the four response types. Our results show that participants did not rate highly their own response types; moreover, they rated their own response types similarly to different ones. This suggests that, at least in this context, people’s preferences at a particular point in time may not reflect their general attitudes, and that various reasonable response types may be equally acceptable. Our study also reveals that situational risk influences the acceptability of some response types.

Abstract

Conventional treatments of neuropathic pain are commonly invasive or non-localized. Focused ultrasound (FUS) is a promising neuromodulation technique that has been shown effective in various animal models. There have been numerous advances in the field of ultrasound neuromodulation with the technology already being applied to humans without a clear understanding of the underlying mechanism. Here, we present a method capable of targeting and monitoring of focused ultrasound (FUS) neuromodulation of the mouse sciatic nerve using high frame-rate displacement and cavitation imaging. Our technique is capable of detecting micron displacements and cavitation activity at the focus. Displacement and cavitation were measured with excitation of the sciatic nerve, indicating that radiation force and cavitation play in parts of the underlying mechanism. Taken together, our imaging technique is a powerful in vivo tool for real-time targeting of deep structures and investigation of the FUS neuromodulation mechanism.

We examine how the usage of online videos affected the usage of other media.An increasing use of online videos reduces the time spent on video media.An increasing use of online videos reduced the time spent on non-media activities. With an increase in the users viewing video content through the Internet, the interest in the recent trend of the displacement of old media (e.g., TV, radio, or newspaper) by online video services has also increased. To examine this trend, this study analyzed the time people spent on online video services compared to the time they spent on old media. The study also assessed whether online video services reduced the time users participated in non-media activities. The results of the study indicated that the time spent on online video services negatively influenced (i.e., reduced) the time spent on old video media and non-media activities. However, it did not have a significant effect on the time spent on old non-video media. In addition, the time spent on online video services was found to exert a greater influence on the time spent on non-media activities when compared to old video media. One of the reasons why the time spent on online video services reduces the time spent on both old video media and non-media activities is that the time spent viewing movies or TV programs through online video services negatively influences the time spent on these activities.

Focusing on South Korea, this study examines how changes in the time spent on online video services affect the time spent on other media: terrestrial TV, pay TV, terrestrial DMB, radio, SNSs, games, newspapers, and books. This study also examines how this time displacement effect of online videos on other media differs across various video content categories. The results show that an increase in the time spent on online video services reduces the time spent on cable TV and games. Among the online video content categories, broadcast network programs and cable network programs reduced the time spent on cable TV, and movies reduced the time spent on games. Moreover, the amount of time spent viewing online videos reduced the time spent on non-media activities but increased sleeping time.

In order to increase the efficiency and accuracy of automotive components press-fit in assembly lines, a precise press-fit system of booster valve is proposed based on real-time displacement monitoring. Firstly, the working principle of the booster valve is introduced. Then, after analysis of the design requirements of press-fit monitoring system, the mechanical structure and design principle of the control system are elaborated. On the basis of software and hardware design, real-time monitoring and control of the displacement and the pressure during press-fit process are realized by adopting the control method of A/D conversion and D/A conversion combined with high-speed voltage comparator. As a result, the press-fit efficiency and accuracy have been greatly increased and the electromagnetic performance of the booster valve can be guaranteed.

Abstract

The rapid adoption of video gaming among children has placed tremendous strain on parents’ ability to manage their children’s consumption. While parents refer online to video games ratings (VGR) information to support their mediation efforts, there are many difficulties associated with such practice. This paper explores the popular VGR sites, and highlights the inadequacies of VGRs to capture the parents’ concerns, such as time displacement, social interactions, financial spending and various video game effects, beyond the widespread panics over content issues, that is subjective, ever-changing and irrelevant. As such, this paper argues for a shift from content-centric to a parent-centric approach in VGRs, that captures the evolving nature of video gaming, and support parents, the main users of VGRs, in their management of their young video gaming children. This paper proposes a Video Games Repository for Parents to represent that shift.

Abstract

This paper presents a numerical model for investigating the structural dynamics response of a rigid rotor supported on deep-groove ball bearings. The numerical model was used to investigate the influence of race waviness on the dynamic characteristics of a rotor ball bearing system, which is very important from a design viewpoint. The forth-order Runge-Kutta numerical integration technique was applied to determine the time displacement response, Poincare map, and frequency spectra. The analysis demonstrated that the model can be used as a tool for predicting the nonlinear dynamic behavior of a rotor ball bearing system under different operating conditions. The results of this study may help further understanding of the nonlinear dynamics of a rotor bearing system.

Abstract

Abstract

This study investigated whether (and how) online video platforms displace television with respect to time investment and viewership. To that end, this study employed mail surveys of a random sample of Internet users throughout the United States. This study revealed that the existence of the time displacement effect depends on (1) what type of online video venues consumers use; (2) how much video content overlaps between online video platforms and television in general; and (3) what type of video content consumers watch online. Specifically, the current study found that the time spent using the Internet to watch user-generated videos and on video-sharing sites reduced the time spent watching television as a consequence.

Abstract

In the analysis of dam displacement data, mostly, a single point is used for calculation. Based on the concept named Time-displacement, this paper proposes a new calculation method with multi-point, which can make up the scarcity of analysis on the data of the dam deformation for a long time. Based on the concept of Time-displacement, the method of building the multi-point model is as follows: firstly, according to the deformation monitoring period, displacement data of all monitoring points on the deformation body, can be converted into the displacement rate. And based on displacement rate value, an appropriate rate threshold can be chosen; the rate threshold based on the experience can be used many also. Then the number of every monitoring point exceeding the rate threshold throughout the monitoring period can be recorded, and according to the number, the monitoring points’ Time-displacement could be divided into different levels. If the number of monitoring points on the deformation body is less, the interpolation points would be laid along the direction of the original monitoring sites. By the method of decision tree classification, the interpolation points’ Time-displacement could be figured out. Finally, with the original monitoring points and the interpolation points, the figure about deformation body’s Time-displacement could be drawn, which can reflect the displacement situation about the deformation body more dynamically.
