Considerable research efforts have been expended in investigating and optimising the emission of acoustic pressure impulses by high power spark discharges in water. Several methods are typically used to generate transient underwater spark discharges, including breakdown of water by stressing electrode(s) with HV impulses, initiation of spark discharges with thin metallic wires placed between opposite electrodes and by injecting gas bubbles into the inter-electrode gap. This paper is aimed at the investigation of the acoustic, hydrodynamic and electrical characteristics of underwater spark discharges initiated by injected air-bubbles. At a constant applied voltage, the injection of air bubbles allows the inter-electrode gap to be increased thus producing stronger acoustic impulses. This paper reports on the impact of injected air bubbles on the characteristics of transient underwater plasma discharges and on the functional relationships between hydrodynamic and electrical parameters of such discharges, including breakdown voltage, plasma resistance, energy delivered into the plasma cavity and the period of gas/plasma cavity oscillation. An analytical model which relates the acoustic efficiency, plasma resistance and energy available in discharge has been developed which can be used for the optimisation and tailoring of underwater plasma-acoustic sources. Pulsed electric field (PEF) treatment can be used for non-thermal inactivation of microorganisms. The aim of this paper is to investigate PEF treatment of yeast, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, using three different field waveforms: square; non-oscillating exponential and oscillating exponential. The PEF system used in this paper consists of a pulsed power supply and a parallel-plane metallic electrodes treatment cell located in an air-pressurised chamber. PEF treatment of the yeast was conducted using electric field impulses with magnitudes of 67 kV/cm and 80 kV/cm. The efficacy of the PEF treatment for inactivation of the yeast cells was assessed by comparison of the PEFtreated and untreated yeast populations. Results showed that ~3-log10 reduction in the yeast population can be achieved with 100 impulses using all tested waveforms. Amongst all three tested waveforms non-oscillating exponential impulses demonstrated improved PEF performance. It has been proven that hydroxyl (OH) radicals can be generated by streamer discharges across water surfaces under ambient atmospheric conditions. Hydroxyl radicals have the highest oxidation capability amongst all oxygen-based reactive species, thus OH play an important role in oxidation of organic molecules and the bactericidal effects of plasma discharges. In this study, generation of hydroxyl radicals in water by pulsed streamer discharges was investigated. Terephthalic acid was used as a chemical probe as this acid is converted into 2-hydroxyterephthalic acid (HTA) by chemical reaction with OH radicals. The concentration of OH radicals was quantified by measuring the fluorescence light intensity generated by HTA molecules in water solutions. Both positive and negative pulsed discharges with different voltage levels were tested. Two different types of sample holder ? non-conductive plastic dishes, and dishes lined with conductive aluminum foil ? were used in order to investigate the effect of the discharge propagation path on the efficiency of OH production. The efficiency of OH production was measured as a function of: the distance between the needle electrode and the water surface; the magnitude and polarity of HV energization; and the total delivered charge. Electrical breakdown in air in a point-plane topology involves complex processes that are still not fully understood. Unlike uniform-field topologies, the highly-divergent fields produced by point-plane topologies create pre-breakdown corona with volumetric space charge. It is known that space charges developed by corona discharge have significant impacts on the breakdown voltage in non-uniform electrode topologies. With large inter-electrode gaps (>cm) the breakdown voltage for a HV point cathode in air at atmospheric pressure is noticeably larger than a HV point anode. However, this paper shows that in shorter point-plane gaps in air (less than ~10 mm), in the air pressure range 0.1-0.35 MPa, an HV point anode has a similar breakdown voltage which eventually is surpassed by the HV point cathode as the inter-electrode gap is increased. The inter-electrode gap at which the HV cathode has a higher hold-off voltage is found to be dependent on the gas pressure and radius of the point electrode. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Electrostatic finite element modelling software and an ac equivalent circuit model have been used to investigate an impediometric microelectrode array biosensor for the detection of bacteria. The electrostatic model showed the capacitance of the biosensor to decrease with increasing numbers of bacteria trapped on the sensor's surface in a suspension of relatively high dielectric permittivity. Optimization of the model suggests that reducing the spatial wavelength of the biosensor's electrodes either through a decrease in electrode width or gap will improve the sensor's sensitivity. In addition, the model confirmed that the permittivity of the external medium had a significant effect on detection efficiency. Increased sensitivity in suspensions of lower relative dielectric permittivity was observed. The equivalent circuit model (ECM) was used to analyze the effect of high levels of immobilized bacteria at fixed signal frequencies (100 Hz and 1 MHz). It has been shown that the ECM discussed in this paper is able to successfully model the experimental data for the actual sensor in the low frequency ranges, allowing prediction of the sensor response and analysis of its performance. Overall, the modelling results obtained in the present paper are in general agreement with those from other published data and can be used in the development and optimization of impediometric biosensors for rapid and reliable detection of pathogenic bacteria. The applied electrical fields required to initiate surface flashover of different types of dielectric material immersed in insulating oil have been investigated, by applying impulses of increasing peak voltage until surface flashover occurred. The behavior of the materials in repeatedly over-volted gaps was also analyzed in terms of breakdown mode (some bulk sample breakdown behaviour was witnessed in this regime), time to breakdown, and breakdown voltage. Cylindrical samples of polypropylene, low-density polyethylene, ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene, and Rexolite, were held between two electrodes immersed in insulating oil, and subjected to average applied electrical fields up to 870 kV/cm. Tests were performed in both uniform- and nonuniform- fields, and with different sample topologies. In applied field measurements, polypropylene required the highest levels of average applied field to initiate flashover in all electrode configurations tested, settling at ~600 kV/cm in uniform fields, and ~325 kV/cm in non-uniform fields. In over-volted point-plane gaps, ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene exhibited the longest pre-breakdown delay times. The results will provide comparative data for system designers for the appropriate choice of dielectric materials to act as insulators for high-voltage, pulsed-power machines. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Corona-stabilised plasma closing switches, filled with electronegative gases such as SF6 and air, have been used in pulsed-power applications as repetitive switching devices for the last 10 years. Their high repetition-rate capabilities coupled with their relatively simple design and construction have made them suitable alternatives to thyratrons and semi-conductor switches. As well as having repetitive switching capabilities, corona-stabilised plasma closing switches have the potential to operate at elevated voltages through the incorporation of multiple electrode sets. This allows high-voltage operation with inherent voltage grading between the electrodes. A further feature of such switches is that they can have relatively low jitter under triggered condition. This paper reports on some of the operational features of a new design of corona-stabilised, cascade switch that utilises air as the insulating gas. At pressures between 0 and 1 bar gauge the switch has be shown to operate over the voltage range of 40 to 100 kV with a jitter below 2 ns. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
